RESUMEN

The discipline of anatomy is one of the pillars of training in higher education courses in health area. Since its origin, this discipline has used the traditional method as an educational strategy. Since then, the discipline has undergone changes, including other teaching methods, such as active methodologies. With the COVID-19 pandemic, declared in March 2020 and the closure of higher education institutions, the teaching of anatomy was impacted, since it was necessary to adapt the modality of face-to-face teaching to remote teaching. The present study aims to evaluate the perception of teachers regarding students' anatomy learning in relation to the types of methodologies applied in remote teaching during the pandemic. For such, a cross-sectional study was carried out, which analyzed the answers of 101 anatomy teachers. The results showed that there was no statistically significant difference regarding teachers' perception of learning in relation to the type of methodology used in remote teaching during the pandemic. There was also no difference in comparing perceptions regarding the type of methodology used before and during the pandemic. Given this, these data encourage the need for reflection in the academic community and new studies with educators and students, in order to identify factors that may improve the quality of anatomy learning.

This study evaluated the body condition score (BCS) at calving and breed (B) effects on milk composition, yield, performance, physiological parameters, hemogram, blood metabolites, and urinary metabolites in the transition and early lactation periods of Mediterranean (MED) and Murrah (MUR) buffaloes. Twenty MED and fifteen MUR buffaloes were distributed into four experimental treatments, in a completely randomized design, considering their racial groups and BCS (LBCS = low; HBCS = high): LBCS MED (N = 9); HBCS MED (N = 11); LBCS MUR (N = 8); HBCS MUR (N = 7). Animals were monitored during the last 21 days of gestation and first 56 days postpartum and kept under the same management and feeding conditions. During data collection, milk composition, yield, performance, physiological parameters, hemogram, blood metabolites, and urinary metabolites were evaluated. Higher milk production and fat-corrected milk were observed in MED than MUR buffaloes. Breed effects were observed on body weight, rectal temperature, glucose, urea, calcium (Ca) concentrations, and BCS effects on total protein, albumin, urea, and Ca. There were BCS effects on hematocrit, neutrophils, eosinophils, and interactions between B × BCS for lymphocytes and platelets. There were breed effects on urinary concentrations of chlorine, uric acid, and interactions between weight (W) × B on chlorine and urea. The MED buffaloes can be considered the most prepared to undergo physiological changes, including the BCS value at calving, indicating higher physiological health. Besides, this study demonstrates more considerable preparation for the calving, regardless of the body condition score at calving.

Although it is considered an economically relevant and prevalent disease, little information is available on the epidemiology and risk factors of porcine proliferative enteropathy (PPE) in commercial pigs, and no publication is available on subsistence pig farming. The objectives of this study were to estimate the seroprevalence of L. intracellularis and identify associated risk factors in backyard pigs in the 12 mesoregions of the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Blood from pigs between 2 months and 6 years of age were sampled; an epidemiological questionnaire was applied to 288 properties investigated in 2016. Serum samples were tested for the presence of anti-L. intracellularis antibodies using an immunoperoxidase monolayer assay. The seroprevalence of L. intracellularis was 97.7% (CI 95%: 96.7-98.4), and there was no statistical difference among the prevalence of the sampled mesoregions. Only 3 of the 12 risk factors were significant when samples were analyzed from strongly seropositive animals (≥ 1:120) in a Poisson multivariate regression model. There was an interaction between properties in peri-urban areas and extensive production systems. This interaction demonstrated an increase in prevalence rates by 3.7 times (95%CI: 2.4-5.8). Properties close to dumps demonstrated an increase in prevalence rates by 2.2 times (95%CI: 0.99-4.8). In conclusion, anti-L. intracellularis antibodies were widely dispersed in subsistence pig farming's in Minas Gerais, indicating a wide circulation of the agent in this type of production system. The interactions of animals raised close to peri-urban areas, extensively, and close to landfills are risk factors for spread of PPE.

Failure of second-generation tyrosine kinase inhibitors (2GTKI) is a challenging situation in patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). Asciminib, recently approved by the US Federal Drug Administration, has demonstrated in clinical trials a good efficacy and safety profile after failure of 2GTKI. However, no study has specifically addressed response rates to asciminib in ponatinib pretreated patients (PPT). Here, we present data on responses to asciminib from 52 patients in clinical practice, 20 of them (38%) with prior ponatinib exposure. We analyzed retrospectively responses and toxicities under asciminib and compared results between PPT and non-PPT patients.After a median follow-up of 30 months, 34 patients (65%) switched to asciminib due to intolerance and 18 (35%) due to resistance to prior TKIs. Forty-six patients (88%) had received at least 3 prior TKIs. Regarding responses, complete cytogenetic response was achieved or maintained in 74% and 53% for non-PPT and PPT patients, respectively. Deeper responses such as major molecular response and molecular response 4.5 were achieved in 65% and 19% in non-PPT versus 32% and 11% in PPT, respectively. Two patients (4%) harbored the T315I mutation, both PPT.In terms of toxicities, non-PPT displayed 22% grade 3-4 TEAE versus 20% in PPT. Four patients (20% of PPT) suffered from cross-intolerance with asciminib as they did under ponatinib.Our data supports asciminib as a promising alternative in resistant and intolerant non-PPT patients, as well as in intolerant PPT patients; the resistant PPT subset remains as a challenging group in need of further therapeutic options.

Summary: Although allergic diseases have become increasingly prevalent in the elderly, there are few data on this population. Through a retrospective analysis of the electronic medical records of patients aged 65 years and above followed in our Immunoallergology Unit, we aimed to characterize the immunoallergic diseases of the elderly. The most common disorders were respiratory diseases (n = 185; 50%), mucocutaneous diseases (n = 113; 31%), drug allergy (n = 31; 8%), food allergy (n = 9; 2%), and anaphylaxis (n = 9; 2%). Use of specific immunotherapy was residual (n = 2; 1%). There was an association between anaphylaxis and both, drug (p = 0.004) and food (p = 0.013) allergies. Non-allergic rhinitis and bronchial asthma were more frequent in females, and ACE inhibitors/ARB induced-angioedema in males. Recognizing the characteristics of immunoallergic diseases in the elderly and the specificities of this age group is paramount in providing these patients with the best possible care.

Cyanobacterial molecular biology can identify pathways that affect the adhesion and settlement of biofouling organisms and, consequently, obtain novel antifouling strategies for marine applications. Proteomic analyses can provide an essential understanding of how cyanobacteria adapt to different environmental settings. However, only a few qualitative studies have been performed in some cyanobacterial strains. Considering the limited knowledge about protein expression in cyanobacteria in different growing conditions, a quantitative proteomic analysis by LC-MS/MS of biofilm cells from a filamentous strain was performed. Biofilms were also analysed through standard methodologies for following cyanobacterial biofilm development. Biofilms were formed on glass and perspex at two relevant hydrodynamic conditions for marine environments (average shear rates of 4 s-1 and 40 s-1). Biofilm development was higher at 4 s-1 and no significant differences were found between surfaces. Proteomic analysis identified 546 proteins and 41 were differentially expressed. Differences in protein expression were more noticeable between biofilms formed on glass and perspex at 4 s-1. When comparing biofilms formed on different surfaces, results suggest that biofilm development may be related to the expression of several proteins like a beta-propeller domain-containing protein, chaperone DnaK, SLH domain-containing proteins, an OMF family outer membrane protein, and/or additional uncharacterized proteins. Regarding the hydrodynamic effect, biofilm development can be related to SOD enzyme expression, to proteins related to photosynthetic processes and to a set of uncharacterized proteins with calcium binding domains, disordered proteins, and others involved in electron transfer activity. Studies that combine distinct approaches are essential for finding new targets for antibiofilm agents. The characterisation performed in this work provides new insights into how shear rate and surface affect cyanobacterial biofilm development and how cyanobacteria adapt to these different environmental settings from a macroscopic standpoint to a proteomics context.

In this study, we evaluated the monitoring of tick fever (TF) in a Brazilian dairy farm in the Minas Gerais state, Brazil, from July 10 to August 4, 2018. We aimed to identify diagnostic and treatment flaws in the protocol adopted by the farm, and to establish a novel and accurate TF monitoring protocol based on precision dairy farming and rational use of antimicrobials and antiparasitic drugs, while evaluating the economic benefits of the proposed strategy. We monitored TF in 395 heifer calves aged between 3 and 14 mo. According to the farm's standard protocol, all calves with an increase of 0.5°C in rectal temperature compared with the previous week's measurement were treated for Anaplasma spp. and Babesia spp. Blood smears were collected from the tail tip of the treated calves. During the last week of the study, we prepared blood smears of all calves regardless of treatment indication. Economic analysis was performed. The results indicated that at least 56.86% (261/459) of the calves did not require treatment for TF, whereas only 23.09% (106/459) had treatment indications. Negative blood smears (45.97%; 211/459) indicated the possibility of calves being affected by another disease or a condition that was not being adequately treated or those not necessarily sick. These results demonstrate the excessive use of medications, representing a direct economic loss, in addition to potentially favoring the occurrence of resistance to antimicrobials. In contrast, 9.42% (26/276) of calves had no treatment indication based on rectal temperature but had treatment indications based on blood smears. Only 5.73% (42/735) of blood smears had co-infection with hemopathogens, and none had triple co-infection. Therefore, we proposed the monitoring of TF using rectal temperature and microscopic analysis. If implemented, this strategy would result in a direct annual savings of approximately $22,638.96 (77.99%) related to medication for the treatment of TF. Therefore, implementing the proposed protocol would be cheaper than treatment based only on rectal temperatures. The currently implemented TF protocols overestimate the occurrence of TF, resulting in overtreatment. Thus, implementing a TF monitoring protocol based on a microscopy tool is justified, with benefits including rational use of medication, potential to generate savings, and reduced morbidity and mortality rates, in addition to enabling other diagnoses.

BACKGROUND: Sulfated polysaccharides from the skin of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), added to the tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) semen diluting medium, can be potential antioxidants and promote the maintenance of sperm quality. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the use of different concentrations of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) from the skin of Nile tilapia as a supplement in two cryogenic media for tambaqui semen. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Tambaqui males received a single dose of pituitary carp extract. The semen was collected for pool analysis and, later, cryopreserved in liquid nitrogen. The pools were diluted and frozen in a solution containing fish-specific powdered coconut water (ACP-104) and 10% DMSO or 5% Glucose and 10% DMSO and supplemented with different concentrations of GAGs. The controls had no GAGs addition. After 45 days, the samples were thawed by immersion in a water bath and evaluated for membrane and DNA integrity, morphology and sperm kinetics. RESULTS: The parameters of linearity (LIN), straightness (STR) and DNA integrity of sperm frozen in 5% Glucose showed better results than ACP-104. For membrane integrity, concentrations of 0 and 1.0 mg/mL were better than 5 mg/mL. Semen motility in 5% Glucose showed superior results at concentrations lower than 5 mg/mL of GAGs. For VCL and VAP, in ACP-104, 3.0 mg/mL exceeded the other treatments. In 5% Glucose, for VCL, 4.0 mg/mL showed the lowest results compared to concentrations of <3.5 mg/mL and, for VAP, it also differed from 4.5 mg/mL CONCLUSION: Therefore, the skin of Nile tilapia has GAGs, in low concentrations, capable of improving the post-thawed sperm quality of tambaqui, especially in 5% Glucose medium.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the replacement of ground corn by crude glycerin and soybean meal by cottonseed cake, in association or not, on feedlot lambs' feeding behavior. Thirty-two non-castrated crossbred ½ Dorper ½ Santa Inês lambs, with an average body weight of 18.52 ± 3.24 kg (mean ± standard deviation), were distributed in a completely randomized design, into four treatments and eight replicates per treatment, in a 2 × 2 factorial scheme. Four experimental diets were tested with different sources or combinations of energy and protein ingredients in the concentrate, respectively: (1) ground corn + soybean meal; (2) ground corn and cottonseed cake; (3) crude glycerin and soybean meal; and (4) crude glycerin and cottonseed cake. The glycerin decreased dry matter (DM) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) (P < 0.001) intakes, whereas it increased times spent in feeding (P = 0.009; from 21.8 to 28.6), rumination (P = 0.006; from 56.2 to 67.2), and chewing (P < 0.001; from 79.4 to 97.2), in minutes/100 g of DM. Feeding efficiencies of DM (P = 0.003) and NDF (P = 0.008) were decreased by the diets. Protein sources increased (P = 0.018) the times spent in chewing and per period in rumination (P = 0.014). Cottonseed cake, as a protein source, up to a 112 g/kg DM level, can totally replace soybean meal in diets for feedlot lambs without effects on the intake, behavioral activities, and feeding efficiencies. In contrast, the crude glycerin energy source is not adequate to replace ground corn in lambs' diets.

The gold technology in Iberia underwent an important development during the Early Iron Age (EIA) following the arrival of new technological skills from the Mediterranean region, including the use of filigree, granulation, and brazing. This work presents the microanalytical study of EIA gold jewels (22 spherical beads and four tongue pendants) recovered from three graves in southern Portugal. The set of jewelry, showing an extraordinary stylistic resemblance, was characterized by optical microscopy, micro energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry and scanning electron microscopy with X-ray microanalysis to establish the alloy composition and production techniques. The pieces show a close technological relation, making use of artificial gold alloys with different amounts of silver (c. 40 and 25%). The decorative styles include different types of filigree (solid wires and hollow wires), while the joining techniques comprise brazing with Au-Ag-Cu solders and, probably, sintering. In spite of those technological and stylistic features, clearly pointing to a Mediterranean influence, the absence of granulation suggests an indigenous workshop where exogenous technologies/decorations were not yet fully integrated in the manufacture of such luxury items.

OBJECTIVES: The aims of this study were (1) to identify attributes for patient safety at a primary healthcare level and (2) to analyze conceptions of patients, professionals, and managers about how these attributes are being addressed. STUDY DESIGN: This was a qualitative study. METHODS: Participants were recruited from three primary care settings in Brazil. A total of 37 subjects (four physicians, three nurses, three dentists, three managers, five community assistants, and 19 patients) participated on interviews about their perceptions of safety attributes at the primary care settings involved in the study. Some of these participants attended a focus group meeting. A thematic categorical analysis was carried out to interpret the interviews. RESULTS: The main attributes for patient safety were valued by the participants. However, barriers such as discontinuity of care, interruptions during consultations, breakdowns in the communication, and ineffective teamwork were reported as frequent sources of patient safety issues. Reports of patients left unattended for excessive time because of the lack of accurate information and disruptions that took up to 35 min show that there is still a long way to go for primary care to be safe and effective in the study settings. CONCLUSIONS: It is necessary that the strategies meet the patient safety needs more effectively and efficiently. Further research is needed to understand the complex nature of the problems that affect patient safety in these settings so that appropriate decisions can be made.

As home-visiting programs expand, there is a need to develop cost-effective tools to monitor their quality at scale. We compare the Home Visit Rating Scales (HOVRS), an instrument to measure home-visit process quality widely used in the United States, to a checklist designed for the Peruvian national home-visiting program, Cuna Mas. Both instruments were administered to a sample of 554 home visits and an equal number of mother-child dyads by their 176 home visitors. While the HOVRS was scored on video recordings of the visits by trained coders, the checklist was scored live by Cuna Mas supervisors. We assessed the validity of both measures in their first application in rural Peru, compared their performance, and selected a subset of items in the checklist to propose a simplified, shorter, and more cost-efficient instrument. To this end, we reorganized checklist items into constructs that best mapped those covered by the HOVRS and selected the highest performing according to predefined criteria. We found that both the HOVRS and the checklist had high reliability and acceptable levels of validity. We argue that the simplified checklist could prove useful for quality monitoring of service delivery of at-scale home-visiting programs and as a tool to support in-service training.


A medida que los programas de visita a casa se expanden, hay una necesidad de desarrollar herramientas de costo eficaz para vigilar la calidad de los mismos a una escala. Comparamos las Escalas de Evaluación de Visitas a Casa (HOVRS), un instrumento para medir la calidad de los procesos de visita a casa ampliamente usado en los Estados Unidos, con una lista de control diseñada para el programa nacional de visitas a casa de Perú, Cuna Mas. Los 176 visitadores a casa le administraron ambos documentos a un grupo muestra de 554 visitas a casa y a un número equivalente de díadas mamá-niño. Los codificadores entrenados evaluaron HOVRS por medio de grabaciones de video de las visitas, mientras que la lista de control fue evaluada en persona por los supervisores de Cuna Mas. Nosotros evaluamos la validez de ambas medidas en su primera puesta en práctica en el Perú rural, comparamos su rendimiento y seleccionamos un subgrupo de categorías en la lista de control para proponer un instrumento simplificado, más corto y de costo más eficaz. Con este fin, reorganizamos las categorías de la lista de control en segmentos que mejor cubren aquellas que están presentes en HOVRS y seleccionamos las que presentan mayor rendimiento de acuerdo con criterios predefinidos. Nos dimos cuenta de que tanto HOVRS como la lista de control presentaban una alta confiabilidad y niveles aceptables de validez. Sostenemos que la lista de control simplificada pudiera demostrar utilidad en cuanto a la calidad de la supervisión del ofrecimiento del servicio de programas de visitas a casa a una escala y como una herramienta para apoyar la capacitación en el empleo.


Du fait que les programmes de visite à domicile se développement, on voit un besoin de développer également des outils rentables afin de contrôler leur qualité à grande échelle. Nous comparons les Echelles d'Evaluation de la Visite à Domicile (en anglais Home Visit Rating Scales, soit HOVRS), un instrument destiné à mesurer la qualité du processus de visite à domicile largement utilisé aux Etats-Unis, à une checklist conçue pour le programme national péruvien de visite à domicile, Cuna Mas. Les deux instruments ont été utilisés avec un échantillon de 554 visites à domiciles et une nombre égal de dyades mère-enfant par leurs 176 visiteurs à domicile. Alors que la HOVRS était évaluée au moyen d'enregistrements vidéo des visites par des évaluateurs entraînés, la checklist a été évaluée en temps réel par les superviseurs de Cuna Mas. Nous avons évalué la validité des deux mesures dans leur première application dans le Pérou rural, comparé leur performance, et sélectionné un sous-groupe d'éléments de la checklist afin de proposer un instrument simplifié, plus court et plus rentable. Pour ce faire nous avons réorganisé les éléments de la checklist en structures cartographiant le mieux ceux couverts par les HOVRS et sélectionné les plus performants selon des critères prédéfinis. Nous avons trouvé qu'à la fois les HOVRS et la checklist faisaient preuve d'une fiabilité élevée et de niveaux de validité acceptables. Nous concluons que la checklist simplifiée pourrait s'avérer utile pour le contrôle de la qualité des prestations de service de programmes de visites à domicile à grande échelle et en tant qu'outil utilisé pour soutenir la formation continue.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Peri-implant diseases are a growing concern among clinicians. Epidemiological studies following recently recommended case definitions for peri-implant diseases are emerging worldwide. Although a small number of studies on the prevalence of peri-implant diseases has been conducted in Brazil, no information on the extent and severity of the condition has been made available so far. The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence, extent and severity of peri-implant diseases in patients treated in a university setting in Brazil. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Patients with dental implants with at least 1 year in function were clinically and radiographically examined and classified according to recently recommended case definitions. A descriptive analysis on the prevalence, extent and severity of the peri-implant status at patient and implant level was performed. Risk indicators for peri-implantitis were also identified with binary logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: Of the 211 participating individuals, 4 (1.9%) presented peri-implant health, 8 (3.8%) clinical stability, 115 (54.5%) mucositis and 84 (39.8%) peri-implantitis. Of the 748 implants analyzed, 47 (6.3%) presented peri-implant health, 30 (4%) clinical stability, 518 (69.2%) mucositis and 153 (20.5%) peri-implantitis. The extent of implants with peri-implantitis and peri-implant mucositis was 41.5% and 90.4%, respectively. Severe peri-implantitis was found in 36 patients (17.1%) and 67 implants (9%). Gender male, number of implants ≥4, implants installed in the maxilla, cemented prosthesis and keratinized mucosa width <2 mm were significantly associated with the event peri-implantitis. CONCLUSION: In the studied population, the prevalence, extent and severity of the peri-implant diseases were similar to those reported elsewhere. Peri-implant diseases were a common finding, with only 5.7% of patients and 10.3% of implants presenting peri-implant health or clinical stability. About 17% of patients studied presented the severe form of peri-implantitis.

We investigate recording and erasure of photorefractive holographic gratings in an undoped Bi12TiO20 crystal in a moderate to high intensity regime of the recording beams at 639.7 nm without and with the action of laser pre-illumination at 532 nm. The detected hologram without pre-illumination indicates the participation of two photorefractive electronic gratings in its recording process, and the diffracted signal by itself exhibits a fivefold enhancement when the total intensity increases from 38.4 to 214.5 mW/cm2. The dependence of the measured total diffraction efficiency on intensity was investigated and showed linear behavior. At least three gratings are present in the regime of pre-illumination and participate in the writing and erasure of holographic mechanisms. Two of them are electronic, and one is hole-based, with a phase difference of Δϕ between them. The theoretical approach used to analyze the total diffraction efficiency based upon the photorefractivity standard model, and considering the presence of the three gratings, showed good agreement with the holographic erasure experimental data and permitted us to compute Δϕ, which exhibited strong and unusual dependence on the total intensity.

3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA or "ecstasy") is a widespread drug of abuse with known neurotoxic properties. The present study aimed to evaluate the differential toxic effects of MDMA in adolescent and aged Wistar rats, using doses pharmacologically comparable to humans. Adolescent (post-natal day 40) (3 × 5 mg/kg, 2 h apart) and aged (mean 20 months old) (2 × 5 mg/kg, 2 h apart) rats received MDMA intraperitoneally. Animals were killed 7 days later, and the frontal cortex, hippocampus, striatum and cerebellum brain areas were dissected, and heart, liver and kidneys were collected. MDMA caused hyperthermia in both treated groups, but aged rats had a more dramatic temperature elevation. MDMA promoted serotonergic neurotoxicity only in the hippocampus of aged, but not in the adolescents' brain, and did not change the levels of dopamine or serotonin metabolite in the striatum of both groups. Differential responses according to age were also seen regarding brain p-Tau levels, a hallmark of a degenerative brain, since only aged animals had significant increases. MDMA evoked brain oxidative stress in the hippocampus and striatum of aged, and in the hippocampus, frontal cortex, and striatum brain areas of adolescents according to protein carbonylation, but only decreased GSH levels in the hippocampus of aged animals. The brain maturational stage seems crucial for MDMA-evoked serotonergic neurotoxicity. Aged animals were more susceptible to MDMA-induced tissue damage in the heart and kidneys, and both ages had an increase in liver fibrotic tissue content. In conclusion, age is a determinant factor for the toxic events promoted by "ecstasy". This work demonstrated special susceptibility of aged hippocampus to MDMA neurotoxicity, as well as impressive damage to the heart and kidney tissue following "ecstasy".

The aim of this study was to define the population, morphological and ultrastructural characteristics of bitch preantral follicles (PAFs) and to compare the effects on the morphology of PAF of two cryopreservation techniques - slow freezing (SF) and vitrification (V) - of bitches' ovarian tissue. The average population (number per ovary) of PAFs was 48,541 ±â€¯18,366, where 94.25% were primordial (45,145 ±â€¯16,076). The average diameter of the primordial follicles was 27.5 ±â€¯4.2 µm. The overall percentage of morphologically normal PAFs was 93.66 ±â€¯6.81% for the control group, 86.16 ±â€¯11.05% after SF and 68.14 ±â€¯12.75% after V. The percentage of normal primordial follicles was 96.69 ±â€¯4.72% in control, 89.51 ±â€¯10.39% in SF and 75.32 ±â€¯9.23% in V. There was no significant difference in the overall percentage of normal PAFs among SF and the control. However, slow frozen follicles presented ultrastructural damage, while vitrified primordial and primary follicles were well preserved. In conclusion, although slow freezing seemed to be a good preserving method, vitrification was more effective than slow freezing in preserving the ultrastructure of primordial and primary follicles of bitches.

BACKGROUND: Frozen equine semen has lower fertility compared to cooled semen. Due to the difficulty to obtain equine oocytes, a heterologous zona pellucida binding assay (ZBA) is an alternative method to predict the fertilizing capability of equine frozen sperm. The rate of capacitated and hyperactivated sperm according to their motility characteristics were analyzed with a Computer Assisted Sperm Analyzer. We believe this report describes for the first time the in vitro hyperactivation induction and the heterologous ZBA to predict the fertilizing ability of frozen equine sperm. OBJECTIVE: This work aimed at developing an assay to evaluate the fertilizing ability of frozen equine sperm using a bovine ZBA with the use of an in vitro capacitation and hyperactivation media with procaine and calcium ionophore A23187, respectively. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The sperm motility characteristics, intact and acrosome reacted sperm rates, and number of stallion sperm bound to the bovine ZP were calculated. RESULTS: The procaine group showed a hyperactivation motility pattern, although it improved ZP sperm binding similarly to the capacitation group. CONCLUSION: The capacitation medium improved the IVF capability of frozen equine sperm, allowing the highest possibility of sperm-oocyte interaction.

Results from bone biopsy and high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT) were compared in 31 CKD patients. There was an agreement mainly for cortical compartment that may represent a perspective on the fracture risk assessment. HR-pQCT also provided some clues on the turnover status, which warrants further studies. INTRODUCTION: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients are at high risk of bone disease. Although bone biopsy is considered the best method to evaluate bone disease, it is expensive and not always available. Here we have compared, for the first time, data obtained from bone biopsy and HR-pQCT in a sample of CKD patients on dialysis. METHODS: HR-pQCT and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) were performed in 31 CKD patients (30 on dialysis). Biopsies were analyzed by quantitative histomorphometry, and classified according to TMV. RESULTS: We have found an inverse correlation between radius cortical density measured by HR-pQCT, with serum, as well as histomorphometric bone remodeling markers. Trabecular density and BV/TV measured through HR-pQCT in the distal radius correlated with trabecular and mineralized trabecular bone volume. Trabecular number, separation, and thickness obtained from HR-pQCT and from bone biopsy correlated with each other. Patients with cortical porosity on bone histomorphometry presented lower cortical density at the distal radius. Cortical density at radius was higher while bone alkaline phosphatase was lower in patients with low turnover. Combined, these parameters could identify the turnover status better than individually. CONCLUSIONS: There was an agreement between HR-pQCT and bone biopsy parameters, particularly in cortical compartment, which may point to a new perspective on the fracture risk assessment for CKD patients. Besides classical bone resorption markers, HR-pQCT provided some clues on the turnover status by measurements of cortical density at radius, although the significance of this finding warrants further studies.

The effects induced by antibiotics on the bacterial membrane may be correlated with their bactericidal activity, and such molecular-level interactions can be probed with Langmuir monolayers representing the cell membrane. In this study, we investigated the interaction between [Ru(mcbtz)2(PPh3)2] (RuBTZ, mcbtz = 2-mercaptobenzothiazoline) and [Ru(mctz)2(PPh3)2] (RuCTZ, mctz = 2-mercaptothiazoline) with Langmuir monolayers of a lipid extract of Escherichia coli, an extract of lipopolysaccharides (LPSs), and a zwitterionic phospholipid, dioleoylphosphatidyl choline (DOPC). RuBTZ and RuCTZ had little effects on DOPC, which is consistent with their negligible toxicity toward mammalian cells that may be approximated by a zwitterionic monolayer. Also little were their effects on LPSs. In contrast, RuBTZ and RuCTZ induced expansion in the surface pressure isotherms and decreased the compressional modulus of the E. coli lipid extract. While the more hydrophobic RuBTZ seemed to affect the hydrophobic tails of the E. coli extract monolayer to a larger extent, according to polarization modulation infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy results, evidence of a stronger RuBTZ interaction could not be confirmed unequivocally. Therefore, the interaction with the E. coli cell membrane cannot be directly correlated with the observed higher bactericidal activity of RuBTZ, in comparison to that of RuCTZ. This appears to be a case in which Langmuir monolayer studies do not suffice to determine the mechanisms responsible for the bactericidal activity.

Since 2008, Brazil is the largest consumer of agrochemicals, which increases production costs and risks of agricultural products, environment, and farmers' contamination. Sweet pepper, which is one of the main consumed vegetables in the country, is on top of the list of the most sprayed crops. The bacterial spot, caused by Xanthomonas spp, is one of the most damaging diseases of pepper crops. Genetic resistant consists of a suitable way of disease control, but development of durable resistant cultivars as well as understanding of plant-bacterium interaction is being a challenge for plant breeders and pathologists worldwide. Inheritance of disease resistance is often variable, depending on genetic background of the parents. The knowledge of the genetic base controlling such resistance is the first step in a breeding program aiming to develop new genotypes, bringing together resistance and other superior agronomic traits. This study reports the genetic basis of bacterial spot resistance in Capsicum annuum var. annuum using mean generation analysis from crosses between accessions UENF 2285 (susceptible) and UENF 1381 (resistant). The plants of each generation were grown in a greenhouse and leaflets were inoculated with bacterial strain ENA 4135 at 105 CFU/mL in 1.0 cm2 of the mesophyll. Evaluations were performed using a scoring scale whose grades ranged from 1.0 (resistant) to 5.0 (susceptible), depending on symptom manifestation. Genetic control of bacterial spot has a quantitative aspect, with higher additive effect. The quantitative analysis showed that five genes were the minimum number controlling bacterial spot resistance. Additive effect was higher (6.06) than dominant (3.31) and explained 86.36% of total variation.
