PURPOSE: Flipped learning has been applied in various fields, including medical professional education. E-learning is compatible with flipped learning; however, it is considered to be unsuitable for providing training on surgical techniques. In this study, we retrospectively examined the ligation performance of online students who underwent training with flipped learning incorporated into e-learning. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of the ligation practices of online students at the Department of General Surgery from March 2020 to June 2021. The subjects included 134 fourth- and fifth-year medical students from Gunma University School of Medicine. We conducted mid-term checks on the 8th day of practice and an examination on the 19th day. Two instructors independently evaluated and calculated scores using the original Global Rating Scale of Gunma University. We also conducted a questionnaire survey on the ligation practice of online students. RESULTS: The total average score of the three tasks was 12.4 for Instructor 1 and 12.0 for Instructor 2. All students had a passing score. The questionnaire survey showed that 70% of the students were trained in ligation at the time of the first evaluation. CONCLUSIONS: Our online training materials and training methods enabled the acquisition of ligation skills by students who had not previously received ligation training.

RESUMEN

Radiation therapy against cancer cells often causes radiation resistance via accumulation of hypoxia-inducible factor 1 subunit alpha (HIF-1α) under hypoxic conditions and severe side effects. Radiation sensitizers without side effects are required to overcome hypoxia-induced radiation resistance and decrease radiation-related side effects in patients with refractory cancer. We previously developed oxygen nanobubble water (NBO2 water) and demonstrated that it suppresses hypoxia-induced radiation resistance in cancer cell lines within the single-nanometer range. This study aimed to elucidate whether NBO2 water could act as a radiosensitizer via regulation of HIF-1α in a tumor-bearing mouse model. Six-week-old female BALB/c mice subcutaneously injected with tumor cells received control water or NBO2 water for 28 days, after which biochemical examinations and radiation treatment were performed. Hypoxic tumor regions were detected immunohistochemically. We found that NBO2 water sensitized radiation reactivity in the xenografted tumors. Notably, NBO2 water administration downregulated the accumulation of HIF-1α in xenografted tumors and did not affect the vital organs of healthy mice. The combination of radiation and single-nanometer NBO2 water without severe side effects may be a promising therapeutic option to improve radiation sensitivity in cancer patients without tolerance to invasive treatments.

The relationship between the local immune status and cancer metabolism regarding 18 F-FDG and 18 F-FAMT uptake in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) remains unknown. The present study examined the correlations between tumor immune status, clinicopathological factors, and positron emission tomography (PET) tracer uptake in ESCC. Forty-one ESCC patients who underwent 18 F-FDG PET and 18 F-FAMT PET before surgery were enrolled in the study. Immunohistochemistry was conducted for programmed death 1 (PD-1), CD8, Ki-67, CD34, GLUT1 (18 F-FDG transporter) and LAT1 (18 F-FAMT transporter). ESCC specimens with high tumoral PD-L1 and high CD8-positive lymphocytes were considered to have "hot tumor immune status." High PD-L1 expression (53.7%) was significantly associated with tumor/lymphatic/venous invasion (P = 0.028, 0.032 and 0.018), stage (P = 0.041), CD8-positive lymphocytes (P < 0.001), GLUT1 (P < 0.001), LAT1 expression (P = 0.006), Ki-67 labelling index (P = 0.009) and CD34-positive vessel counts (P < 0.001). SUVmax of 18 F-FDG was significantly higher in high PD-L1 cases than in low PD-L1 cases (P = 0.009). SUVmax of 18 F-FAMT was significantly higher in high PD-L1 (P < 0.001), high CD8 (P = 0.012) and hot tumor groups (P = 0.028) than in other groups. High SUVmax of 18 F-FAMT (≥4.15) was identified as the only predictor of hot tumor immune status. High PET tracer uptake was significantly associated with cancer aggressiveness and hot tumor immune status in ESCC. PET imaging may be an effective tool to predict tumor immune status in ESCC with respect to immune checkpoint inhibitor sensitivity.

PURPOSE: Although docetaxel plus ramucirumab has shown superior treatment efficacy over docetaxel monotherapy for patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), the high rate of febrile neutropenia (FN) presents a clinical problem. This study aimed to validate the primary prophylactic use of pegfilgrastim with docetaxel and ramucirumab treatment in Japanese patients with NSCLC. METHODS: Patients with NSCLC with progression after at least one round of chemotherapy were enrolled and administered docetaxel (60 mg/m2) plus ramucirumab (10 mg/kg) intravenously on day 1, followed by pegylated-granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (3.6 mg) on day 2 of a 21-day treatment cycle. The primary study endpoint was the percentage of patients who developed FN. Secondary endpoints included overall survival, progression-free survival, overall response rate, and safety. RESULTS: Overall, 20 patients (15 men and 5 women) were enrolled, of whom one developed FN, resulting in an overall FN rate of 5%. The response and disease control rates were 40% and 85%, respectively. The median progression-free survival was 6.6 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.5-NR) months. The median overall survival was 18.4 (95% CI, 2.2-11.0) months. Six patients aged over 75 years were included in this study, and although most adverse events were durable, ramucirumab-associated adverse events occurred more frequently in these patients. CONCLUSIONS: We observed a 5% FN rate using primary prophylactic pegylated-granulocyte colony-stimulating factor with docetaxel plus ramucirumab in Japanese patients with NSCLC. While most adverse events were durable, elderly patients should be closely monitored.

PURPOSE: The ß2-adrenergic receptor (ß2AR) is highly expressed in various human cancers. The prognostic significance of its expression in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) remains unclear. The aim of this study was to assess the prognostic role of ß2AR expression in patients with surgically resected CRC. METHODS: One hundred and forty-seven patients with surgically resected CRC were examined using immunohistochemistry. The expression of ß2AR was assessed in the specimens of resected primary tumors. RESULTS: ß2AR was expressed in 52.3% of the patients' tumors. ß2AR expression was significantly associated with T factor, N factor, and tumor cell proliferation (Ki-67 labeling index). Univariate analysis demonstrated that T factor, N factor, tumor stage, lymphatic permeation, vascular invasion, perineural invasion, ß2AR expression, and Ki-67 labeling index were significant prognostic factors for worse disease-free survival (DFS); all but T factor were also significant predictors for worse overall survival (OS). Multivariate analysis confirmed that expression of ß2AR was a significant prognostic marker for predicting worse DFS and OS. CONCLUSION: ß2AR expression was identified as a significant independent prognostic factor in patients with surgically resected CRC.

Chemotherapy has been the treatment of choice for unresectable peritoneal dissemination; however, it is difficult to eradicate such tumors because of poor drug delivery. To solve this issue, we developed FF-10832 as liposome-encapsulated gemcitabine to maintain a high concentration of gemcitabine in peritoneal tumors from the circulation and ascites. A syngeneic mouse model of peritoneal dissemination using murine Colon26 cell line was selected to compare the drug efficacy and pharmacokinetics of FF-10832 with those of gemcitabine. Despite the single intravenous administration, FF-10832 treatment enabled long-term survival of the lethal model mice as compared with those treated with gemcitabine. Pharmacokinetic analysis clarified that FF-10832 could achieve a more effective gemcitabine delivery to peritoneal tumors owing to better stability in the circulation and ascites. The novel liposome-encapsulated gemcitabine FF-10832 may be a curative therapeutic tool for cancer patients with unresectable peritoneal dissemination via the effective delivery of gemcitabine to target tumors.

BACKGROUND: Nivolumab, an anti-programmed death-1 (PD-1) antibody, is administered in patients with previously treated non-small cell lung cancer. However, little is known about the established biomarker predicting the efficacy of nivolumab. Here, we conducted a preliminary study to investigate whether 18F-FDG-PET/CT could predict the therapeutic response of nivolumab at the early phase. METHODS: Twenty-four patients were enrolled in this study. 18F-FDG-PET/CT was carried out before and 1 month after nivolumab therapy. SUVmax, metabolic tumour volume (MTV), and total lesion glycolysis (TLG) were calculated. Immunohistochemical analysis of PD-L1 expression and tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes was conducted. RESULTS: Among all patients, a partial metabolic response to nivolumab was observed in 29% on SUVmax, 25% on MTV, and 33% on TLG, whereas seven (29%) patients achieved a partial response (PR) based on RECIST v1.1. The predictive probability of PR (100% vs. 29%, p = 0.021) and progressive disease (100% vs. 22.2%, p = 0.002) at 1 month after nivolumab initiation was significantly higher in 18F-FDG on PET/CT than in CT scans. Multivariate analysis confirmed that 18F-FDG uptake after administration of nivolumab was an independent prognostic factor. PD-L1 expression and nivolumab plasma concentration could not precisely predict the early therapeutic efficacy of nivolumab. CONCLUSION: Metabolic response by 18F-FDG was effective in predicting efficacy and survival at 1 month after nivolumab treatment.

BACKGROUND: Stathmin1 (STMN1) is a cytosolic phosphoprotein that regulates cellular microtubule dynamics and is known to have oncogenic activity. Despite several reports, its roles in gastric cancer (GC) remain unclear owing to a lack of analyses of highly metastatic cases. This study aimed to investigate STMN1 as a prognostic and predictive indicator of response to paclitaxel therapy in patients with GC, including inoperable cases. METHODS: Immunohistochemical analysis of STMN1 was performed on both operable (n=95) and inoperable GC (n=61) samples. The roles of STMN1 in cancer cell proliferation and sensitivity to a microtubule-targeting drug, paclitaxel, were confirmed by knockdown experiments using GC cell lines. RESULTS: Multivariate and Kaplan-Meier analyses demonstrated that high STMN1 was predictive of poor prognosis in both the groups. In the operable cohort, STMN1 expression correlated with cancer curability, recurrence, and resistance to adjuvant therapy. A correlation with paclitaxel resistance was observed in inoperable cases. Knockdown of STMN1 in GC cell lines inhibited proliferation and sensitised the cells to paclitaxel by enhancing apoptosis. CONCLUSIONS: STMN1 is a possible biomarker for paclitaxel sensitivity and poor prognosis in GC and could be a novel therapeutic target in metastatic GC.

BACKGROUND: Known as a microtubule-destabilizing protein, STMN1 (gene symbol: STMN1) regulates the dynamics of microtubules, cell cycle progress, and chemo-resistance against taxane agents. It is highly expressed in various human cancers and involved in cancer progression as well as poor prognosis. METHODS: Expression of STMN1 was examined by immunohistochemistry using FFPE tissue sections from 186 patients with lung squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC). Analysis of STMN1 suppression was performed for STMN1 small interfering RNA (siRNA)-transfected LSCC cell lines to determine the change in proliferation, invasive and apoptosis abilities, and paclitaxel sensitivity. RESULTS: The cytoplasmic STMN1 expression in LSCC was higher than in normal tissues. The high expression was significantly associated with vascular invasion (P = 0.0477) and poor prognosis. In addition, the proliferating and invasive abilities were decreased, and the apoptosis ability and paclitaxel sensitivity were increased in STMN1-suppressed LSCC cells compared with control cells. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that STMN1 is a prognostic factor that also is associated with caner progression and chemo-resistance. Therefore, STMN1 could be a predictor for poor prognosis and a potential therapeutic target in LSCC.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The Caspase14 (CASP14) was reported that the low expression of CASP14 in ovarian cancer and colon cancer was associated with cancer progression, on the other hand, that the CASP14 expression in breast cancer was higher than that of non-cancerous tissues. The purpose of this study is to determine the clinical significance of CASP14 in breast cancer. METHODS: We performed immunohistochemistry for CASP14, ER, PgR, HER2, Ki67, EGFR, CK5/6, CD44, CD24, ALDH1, claudins, and androgen receptor in 222 breast cancer patients including 55 TNBC cases, and evaluated the relationship of CASP14, above-mentioned markers, and prognosis. Using public microarray database of breast cancer, the prognostic value of CASP14 was calculated. RESULTS: High CASP14 expression was significantly associated with TNBC subtype (P = 0.015), nuclear grade (P = 0.006), Ki67, EGFR (P < 0.001, P = 0.016), ALDH1, CD44 and CD24 (P < 0.001, P < 0.001, P = 0.001) in 222 breast cancer cases, and the high expression of claudin1 (P = 0.017), and androgen receptor (P = 0.002) in TNBC cases was related to the high CASP14. According to the public database, survival in the high CASP14 breast cancer patients was shorter than low CASP14 patients. CONCLUSIONS: High CASP14 expression is a marker of breast cancer aggressiveness in association with proliferation, TNBC phenotype, and cancer stemness.

Peritoneal dissemination is a major cause of recurrence in patients with malignant tumors in the peritoneal cavity. Effective anticancer agents and treatment protocols are necessary to improve outcomes in these patients. However, previous studies using mouse models of peritoneal dissemination have not detected any drug effect against peritoneal micrometastasis. Here we used the luciferase assay to evaluate peritoneal micrometastasis in living animals and established an accurate mouse model of early peritoneal microdissemination to evaluate tumorigenesis and drug efficacy. There was a positive correlation between luminescence intensity in in vivo luciferase assay and the extent of tumor dissemination evaluated by ex vivo luciferase assay and mesenteric weight. This model has advantages over previous models because optimal luciferin concentration without cell damage was validated and peritoneal microdissemination could be quantitatively evaluated. Therefore, it is a useful model to validate peritoneal micrometastasis formation and to evaluate drug efficacy without killing mice.

System l amino acid transporter 1 (LAT1) is highly expressed in various types of human cancer, and contributes to cancer growth and survival. Recently, we have shown that LAT1 expression is closely related to the growth and aggressiveness of esophageal cancer, and is an independent marker of poor prognosis. However, it remains unclear whether LAT1 inhibition could suppress esophageal cancer growth. In this study, we investigated the tumor-suppressive effects of the inhibition of LAT1. Both LAT1 and CD98, which covalently associates to LAT1 on the membrane, were expressed in human esophageal cancer cell lines KYSE30 and KYSE150. Quantitative PCR analysis showed that the expression of LAT1 was much higher than other subtypes of LAT. A selective inhibitor of LAT, 2-aminobicyclo-(2,2,1)-heptane-2-carboxylic acid (BCH), suppressed cellular uptake of l-14 C-leucine and cell proliferation in a dose-dependent manner. It also suppressed phosphorylation of mammalian target of rapamycin, 4E-BP1, and p70S6K protein, and induced cell cycle arrest at G1 phase. These results suggest that suppression of both mammalian target of rapamycin signaling and cell cycle progression is involved in BCH-induced growth inhibition. In tumor-bearing mice, daily treatment with BCH significantly delayed tumor growth and decreased glucose metabolism, indicating that LAT1 inhibition potentially suppresses esophageal cancer growth in vivo. Thus, our results suggest that LAT1 inhibition could be a promising molecular target for the esophageal cancer therapy.

Recent studies cite ß2-adrenergic receptor (ß2AR) antagonists as novel therapeutic agents for melanoma, as they may reduce the disease progression. The ß2AR has shown to be expressed in malignant melanoma. However, it remains unclear whether the ß2AR expression has a clinical and pathological significance in patients with cutaneous malignant melanoma. We herein conducted a clinicopathological study to investigate the protein expression of ß2AR in malignant melanoma of the skin and its prognostic significance. One hundred thirty-three patients with surgically resected cutaneous malignant melanoma were evaluated. Tumor sections were stained by immunohistochemistry for ß2AR, Ki-67, the microvessel density (MVD) determined by CD34, and p53. ß2AR was highly expressed in 44.4 % (59 out of 133) of the patients. The expression of ß2AR was significantly associated with the tumor thickness, ulceration, T factor, N factor, disease stage, tumor size, cell proliferation (Ki-67), and MVD (CD34). Using Spearman's rank test, the ß2AR expression was correlated with Ki-67 (r = 0.278; 95 % CI, 0.108 to 0.432; P = 0.001), CD34 (r = 0.445; 95 %CI, 0.293 to 0.575; P < 0.001), and the tumor size (r = 0.226; 95 % CI, 0.053 to 0.386; P = 0.008). Using a univariate analysis, the tumor thickness, ulceration, disease stage, ß2AR, Ki-67, and CD34 had a significant relationship with the overall and progression-free survivals. A multivariable analysis confirmed that ß2AR was an independent prognostic factor for predicting a poor overall survival (HR 1.730; 95 % CI 1.221-2.515) and progression-free survival (HR 1.576; 95 % CI 1.176-2.143) of malignant melanoma of the skin. ß2AR can serve as a promising prognostic factor for predicting a worse outcome after surgical treatment and may play an important role in the development and aggressiveness of malignant melanoma.

The ß2-adrenergic receptor (ß2-AR) is highly expressed in various human neoplasms and has been considered a novel therapeutic target of cancer treatment. However, the clinicopathological significance of ß2-AR expression in patients with gastric cancer (GC) remains unclear. The aim of this study was to explore ß2-AR expression and its prognostic significance. A total of 331 patients with surgically resected GC were evaluated. Tumor sections were stained immunohistochemically for ß2-AR. And, we confirmed ß2-AR expression in the GC cell lines by Western blot. ß2-AR was highly expressed in 30.5 % of GC patients. Expression was significantly associated with age, T factor, tumor differentiation, histology of non-signet cells, lymphatic permeation, and vascular invasion. And, all the GC cell lines expressed ß2-AR. On univariate analysis, age, disease stage, T factor, N factor, lymphatic permeation, vascular invasion, and ß2-AR expression were significantly associated with overall survival. Although the multivariate analysis did not indicate that ß2-AR expression was independently prognostic of survival, high-level ß2-AR expression was associated with significantly poorer survival of GC patients with well or moderately differentiated tumors. ß2-AR expression was a significant predictor of tumor aggressiveness in, and poorer survival of, patients with GC.

BACKGROUND: Amino acid transporters are highly expressed in various human cancers. L-type amino acid transporter 1 (LAT1) and system alanine-serine-cysteine amino acid transporter-2 (ASCT2) play a crucial role in tumor progression and survival. However, the clinicopathological significance of these transporters in patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) remains unclear. METHODS: One hundred and fifty-seven patients with surgically resected ESCC were evaluated. Immunohistochemical analysis was performed for LAT1, ASCT2, CD98, Ki-67, and micro-vessel density (MVD), as determined by CD34 expression. RESULTS: LAT1 and ASCT2 were positively expressed in 59% (93/157) and 48% (76/157) of tumors respectively. LAT1 and ASCT2 expression significantly correlated with T factor, N factor, lymphatic permeation, vascular invasion, and CD98 expression. The 5-year survival rates of LAT1-high and -low and ASCT2-high and -low expressing patients were 62.0% and 69.6% (P < 0.05) and 59.6% and 70.1% (P = 0.068), respectively. The combined positive expression of LAT1 and ASCT2 was a significant prognostic factor in univariate analysis. CONCLUSION: High expression of LAT1 and ASCT2 correlates with metastasis and invasion. Accordingly, these proteins could serve as prognostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets for treating patients with surgically resectable ESCC. J. Surg. BACKGROUND: Metastatic and refractory gastric cancer (GC) are associated with a poor prognosis; therefore, the identification of prognostic factors and chemosensitivity markers is extremely important. Protein arginine methyltransferase 1 (PRMT1) may play a role in chemosensitivity/apoptosis induction via activation of the tumor suppressor forkhead box O1 (FOXO1). The purpose of this study was to clarify the expression of and relationship between PRMT1 and FOXO1 to evaluate the applicability of PRMT1 as a prognostic marker and a therapeutic tool in GC. METHODS: We investigated the clinical and functional significance of PRMT1 and FOXO1 in 195 clinical GC samples using immunohistochemistry. We performed suppression analysis of PRMT1 using small interfering RNA to determine the biological roles of PRMT1 in chemosensitivity. RESULTS: PRMT1 and FOXO1 in GC samples were predominantly expressed in the nucleus. Patients with lower PRMT1 expression (n = 131) had suppressed nuclear accumulation of FOXO1, higher recurrence after adjuvant chemotherapy, and poorer prognosis than those with higher PRMT1 expression (n = 64). PRMT1 downregulation in GC cells by RNA interference inhibited cisplatin and 5-fluorouracil sensitivity. The expression of phosphorylated FOXO1 and phosphorylated BCL-2 antagonist of cell death was upregulated in PRMT1 small interfering RNA groups. CONCLUSION: Our data suggest that the evaluation of PRMT1 expression in GC is a useful predictor of poor prognosis and recurrence after adjuvant chemotherapy. Moreover, these data suggest that PRMT1 is a promising therapeutic tool for overcoming refractory GC.

BACKGROUND: During radiofrequency (RF) hyperthermia treatment, hot-spot phenomena may occur and prevent treatment continuation if the output is not lowered. We previously reported a significant correlation between the initial energy output at which output-limiting symptoms occurred and patient status. Patients with a complete clinical response had significantly increased temperature, while some patients with partial clinical response and stable disease had increased temperature, depending on the occurrence of output-limiting symptoms. To predict the initial energy output at which output-limiting symptoms occur, we performed multiple regression analysis with the parameters of patients' physical status. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Hyperthermia alone or concomitant with chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy was applied in 62 patients with malignant disease for a total of 310 treatments with a Thermotron RF-8 between December 2011 and April 2014. RESULTS: No output-limiting symptoms were shown in 65.5% of 310 treatments. Pain (29.7%), micturition desire (1.9%), skin discomfort (0.6%), subcutaneous induration (1.6%), cold sensation (0.6%), and nausea (0.3%) were reported in the 310 treatments. A good predictive equation for initial energy output at which output-limiting symptoms occur was determined with two parameters, initial time of an output-limiting symptom onset, and thickness of the fat of the abdominal wall. Multiple regression analysis showed an adjusted R(2 )= 0.99 and variance inflation factor < 2. CONCLUSIONS: We present a good predictive equation for initial energy output at which output-limiting symptoms occur. It is critical to prevent RF hyperthermia-induced output-limiting symptoms and establish new prevention strategies.

MicroRNA-7 (miR-7) has been reported to be a tumor suppressor in all malignancies including colorectal cancer (CRC). However, its significance for CRC clinical outcomes has not yet been explored. The potential for miR-7 to act as a tumor suppressor by coordinately regulating the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) signaling pathway at several levels was examined. We investigated the tumor inhibitory effect of miR-7 in CRC, with particular focus on the relationship between miR-7 and the EGFR pathway. Quantitative reverse transcription-PCR was used to evaluate miR-7 expression in 105 CRC cases to determine the clinicopathologic significance of this miRNA. The regulation of EGFR by miR-7 was examined with miR-7 precursor-transfected cells. Furthermore, we investigated whether miR-7 suppresses proliferation of CRC cells in combination with cetuximab, a monoclonal antibody against EGFR. Multivariate analysis indicated that low miR-7 expression was an independent prognostic factor for poor survival (P = 0.0430). In vitro assays showed that EGFR and RAF-1 are direct targets of miR-7, which potently suppressed the proliferation of CRC cells, and, interestingly, that the growth inhibitory effect of each of these was enhanced by cetuximab. miR-7 is a meaningful prognostic marker. Furthermore, these data indicate that miR-7 precursor, alone or in combination with cetuximab, may be useful in therapy against CRC.

BACKGROUND: Despite advances in the development of various therapeutic agents, non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is associated with a poor prognosis. To improve the prognosis of patients with NSCLC, new therapeutic targets for overcoming drug resistance are required. The process of autophagy is required to support the tumorigenesis and drug resistance of cancer cells. We investigated the clinical significance of SIRT6, a member of the NAD(+) -dependent deacetylase family, which regulates a variety of cancer-related processes, including autophagy. METHODS: Immunohistochemistry analysis of SIRT6 expression and localization in 98 NSCLC clinical specimens and in vitro analysis using SIRT6-knockout lung carcinoma cell lines were performed. RESULTS: Patients with high cytoplasmic expression and low nuclear expression of SIRT6 (n = 33) had more aggressive cancer, shorter overall survival, and shorter recurrence-free survival than did patients with different SIRT6 expression profiles (P < 0.05). In vitro analysis revealed that SIRT6 knockdown lung adenocarcinoma cell line improved paclitaxel sensitivity (P < 0.05) and reduced the expression levels of both nuclear factor kappaB and autophagy marker Beclin1. CONCLUSION: Our data demonstrated that SIRT6 expression in NSCLC could be a useful prognostic marker and that SIRT6 might represent a novel target gene for predicting sensitivity of chemotherapy in lung adenocarcinoma.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Reduced port laparoscopic surgery has recently emerged as a method to improve the cosmetic results of conventional laparoscopic surgery. We reported our technique of reduced port laparoscopic colectomy using 3-port and short-time outcomes. METHODOLOGY: Between 2005 and 2012, we performed 161 reduced port laparoscopic colectomies using the 3-port technique. Data analyzed in-cluded age, gender, body mass index (BMI), duration of surgery, number of harvested lymph nodes, and duration of hospital stay. RESULTS: All of the cases were successfully performed using the 3-port procedure. The median durations of surgery and postoperative hospital stay were 140 mm (range 75-463 mm) and 9 days (range 5-38 days), respectively. No mortality was associated with this technique. CONCLUSION: Reduced port laparoscopic colectomy is feasible and may have advantages over conventional laparoscopic colectomy.
