RESUMEN

AIM: To investigate the association between initiation of breastfeeding within 1 hour after birth (TIBF) and maternal educational status, paternal educational status, household income, marital status, media exposure and parity in Ethiopia. METHODS: We searched PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, SCOPUS, CINAHL and WHO Global health library databases. All studies were conducted in Ethiopia and published from 2000 to 2019 were included. To obtain the pooled odds ratio (OR), data were fitted in random-effects meta-analysis model. Statistical heterogeneity was quantified using Cochran's Q test, τ2 and I2 statistics. This meta-analytic review was reported in compliance with the PRISMA statement. RESULTS: Out of 553 studies retrieved, 25 fulfilled our inclusion criteria. High maternal educational status (P < .001), paternal educational status (P = .001) and household income (P = .002), being married (P = .001) and multiparity (P = .01) were significantly associated with TIBF. There was no significant publication bias. CONCLUSIONS: Our meta-analysis showed that TIBF was associated with high educational and economic status, being married and multiparity. This suggests that the meta-analysis detected small associations that many previous studies in Ethiopia have not been able to show. Our findings can be useful for comparisons with other countries.

RESUMEN

We have systematically extracted all available heritability (h2) estimates of glaucoma and related endophenotypes from the literature and summarized the evidence by meta-analysis. Glaucoma endophenotypes were classified into 10 clusters: intraocular pressure, anterior chamber size, central corneal thickness, cup-to-disc ratio, disc size, cup size, corneal hysteresis, retinal nerve fiber layer thickness, cup shape, and peripapillary atrophy. Random-effects meta-analyses were performed for each cluster. For clusters with n ≥ 10 h2 estimates, we also performed subgroup and meta-regression analyses. The literature search yielded 53 studies. The h2 of primary open-angle glaucoma ranged from 0.17 to 0.81, and was 0.65 for primary angle-closure glaucoma in a single study. The pooled endophenotype h2 estimates were intraocular pressure, 0.43 (0.38-0.48); anterior chamber size, 0.67 (0.60-0.74); central corneal thickness, 0.81 (0.73-0.87); cup-to-disc ratio, 0.56 (0.44-0.68); disc size, 0.61 (0.37-0.81); cup size, 0.58 (0.35-0.78); corneal hysteresis, 0.40 (0.29-0.51); retinal nerve fiber layer thickness, 0.73 (0.42-0.91); cup shape, 0.62 (0.22-0.90); and peripapillary atrophy, 0.73 (0.70-0.75). We identified mean age, ethnicity, and study design as major sources of heterogeneity. Our results confirm the strong influence of genetic factors on glaucoma and its endophenotypes. These pooled h2 estimates provide the most accurate assessment to date of the total genetic variation that can ultimately be explained by gene-finding studies.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: The aims of this overview are to assess the trend of narrative and systematic reviews in Ethiopia, examine their methodological quality, and suggest future directions for improvement. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: All narrative reviews and systematic reviews with or without a meta-analysis on topics associated with Ethiopia irrespective of the place of publication and authors' affiliation were included. The International Narrative Systematic Assessment for narrative reviews and A MeaSurement Tool to Assess Systematic Reviews for systematic reviews with or without a meta-analysis were used for quality appraisal. Fisher's exact test at the P-value threshold of 0.05 was used to investigate associated factors of methodological quality. RESULTS: Of 106 articles reviewed, 54 (50.9%) were narrative reviews, 17 (16%) were systematic reviews, and 35 (33.1%) were systematic reviews with meta-analyses. Among 48 systematic reviews with or without meta-analysis, only five (10.4%) registered their protocol, four (8.3%) justified the selection of the study design for inclusion, and none of them reported sources of funding for the primary studies. Overall, 55.3% of narrative reviews and 75% of systematic reviews with or without meta-analysis had poor methodological quality. CONCLUSIONS: Although publication rate of narrative and systematic reviews has risen in Ethiopia, half of the narrative reviews and three-quarters of the systematic reviews had poor methodological quality.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: The 2013 World Health Organization Status Report on Road Safety estimated that approximately 1.24 million deaths occur annually due to road traffic crashes with most of the burden falling on low- and middle-income countries. The objective of this research is to study the prevalence of road traffic crashes in Mekelle, Tigray, Northern Ethiopia and to identify risk factors with the ultimate goal of informing prevention activities and policies. METHODS: This study used a cross-sectional design to measure the prevalence and factors associated with road traffic crashes among 4-wheeled minibus (n = 130) and 3-wheeled Bajaj (n = 582) taxi drivers in Mekelle, Ethiopia. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression were used to evaluate the association between risk factors and drivers' involvement in a road traffic crash within the 3 years prior to the survey. FINDINGS: Among the 712 taxi drivers, 26.4% (n = 188) of them reported involvement in a road traffic crash within the past 3 years. Drivers who listened to mass media had decreased likelihood of road traffic crash involvement (AOR = 0.51, 0.33-0.78), while speedy driving (AOR = 4.57, 3.05-7.44), receipt of a prior traffic punishment (AOR = 4.57, 2.67-7.85), and driving a mechanically faulty taxi (AOR = 4.91, 2.81-8.61) were strongly associated with road traffic crash involvement. Receiving mobile phone calls while driving (AOR = 1.91, 1.24-2.92) and history of alcohol use (AOR = 1.51, 1.00-2.28) were also associated with higher odds of road traffic crash involvement. CONCLUSION: The results of this study show that taxi drivers in Mekelle habitually place themselves at increased risk of road traffic crashes by violating traffic laws, especially related to speedy driving, mobile phone use, and taxi maintenance. This research can be used to support re-evaluation of the type, severity, and enforcement of traffic violation penalties.
