RESUMEN

The relationships between diabetes mellitus and cognitive function were studied in patients aged over 50 years with good metabolic control and without chronic complications. The following tests were performed: CES-D, Rey's, Benton's, Span's, Corsi's, MMSE, Raven's. No differences were found in the comparison between groups (12 diabetics and 17 normals) contrary to other similar studies. This could be for the bad metabolic control of patients studied in previous studies or for the existence of minimal deficit not shown with the conventional tests.

RESUMEN

The authors have retrospectively analysed 2215 surgical procedures for gallbladder stones. The global incidence of gallbladder neoplasm has been 5%. This rate rises to 11% considering female patients over 60 years old. In this group, a gallbladder carcinoma was contemporary present in 17.4% of acute cholecystitis. Cholecystectomy may be suggested in every patients with gallstones, even asymptomatic, particularly if some risk factors are present.

RESUMEN

In the hemopoietic system, interactions between stem cells and components of the bone marrow microenvironment play a pivotal role in blood cell proliferation and differentiation. Among the adhesion molecules, the integrins of the beta 1-subfamily are known to direct cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions and evidence has been provided that CD34-positive stem cells bind either to the bone marrow stroma or to the extracellular matrix proteins through the beta 1-integrins. It seems that changes in their expression pattern or signalling function are likely to reflect disturbances at the hemopoietic bone marrow microenvironmental level. Any alteration of their biological functions makes them attractive candidates for playing decisive roles in the leukemic processes. In this view, beta 1-integrins have been recognized to mediate those cellular interactions and migrations that are important in the biology of leukemia. In this paper we review some aspects of the role played by beta 1-integrins, especially VLA-4 and VLA-5, in adult acute lymphoblastic leukemia in relation with the expression rate of the stem cell antigen CD34.

RESUMEN

Some of the Authors previously demonstrated a significant precocious serum T3 increase after 200 micrograms TRH acute intravenous administration (TRH test). Reverse-T3 (rT3) is now known to interfere with T4 conversion to T3. We therefore compared spontaneously occurring to TRH test-induced changes in T3 and rT3 serum levels within a group of four healthy women in fertile age. Maximum rT3 increase during TRH test did not differ significantly from the maximum spontaneous variation at the same time of the day. Maximum T3 increase, on the contrary, was significantly higher than observed maximum spontaneous variation (0,81 ng/ml versus 0,39 ng/ml increase, p less than 0,01). Possible implications are discussed in the text.
