RESUMEN

The purpose of the study was to determine heroin dependence and risky behaviors associated with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection among newly incarcerated injection drug users (IDUs). Three self-administrated questionnaires were collected among 450 newly incarcerated male heroin users during 2005-2007. Inmates were categorized as heroin-dependent if they met three or more of the six ICD-10 criteria. Heroin-dependent inmates had higher scores of bloodborne virus transmission risk than non-dependent IDUs (12.8 ± 16.0 vs. 7.2 ± 11.5, p < 0.001). Multiple logistic regression analysis indicated that heroin dependence was a significant moderator of the association between risky injection behaviors and HIV infection. It is crucial to integrate substance treatment with behavioral interventions into harm reduction programs to prevent bloodborne virus transmission among IDUs.

RESUMEN

Our study set out to assess readiness to change blood-borne virus transmission behaviors using the Transtheoretical Model among inmates in a court-ordered detention center. A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted in southern Taiwan. All men convicted of illicit drug use and sentenced to undergo the 6-month detoxification program were invited to participate. Half of the 172 participating inmates described themselves as being in the contemplation stage of change. The length of residency in the detoxification program was not associated with self-reported readiness to change, chi(2)= 6.53, p = .16. Inmates in the precontemplation stage had increased rates for high-risk behaviors than those in the contemplation and action stages (p < .001). The efficacy of forced-abstinence detention programs on readiness to change risky behaviors needs to be reevaluated.

RESUMEN

Taiwan is experiencing an outbreak of human immunodeficiency virus infection among injection drug users. The purpose of the study was to determine the impact of a Transtheoretical Model-based HIV education program among drug-dependent inmates. A single group pre/post design was used to evaluate shortened impacts among 136 inmates who were arrested for illicit drug use and had attended a brief HIV education program in 2005. A repeated-measures analysis of variance indicated positive changes in AIDS knowledge (F > = 104.16, p < 0.001), self-efficacy to reduce HIV-risk behaviors (F = 26.5, p < 0.001), and readiness of change on substance use (F = 4.83, p = 0.03). The study findings showed that a brief TTM-based HIV education program can be effective for drug-dependent inmates.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Diverse presentations of dens invaginatus (DI) and root canal treatment with an immature open apex often pose challenges to dentists. Adequate treatment planning for DI is the main reason for successful approach, i.e., we should consider the shape and depth of the concave folding, the condition of the original pulp, and the growth stage of the root formation. CASE SUMMARY: A 9-year-old girl complained of severe pain of the right maxillary incisor (tooth 12) when chewing for two weeks. Following clinical and radiographic examinations, Oehlers type III DI of tooth 12, with an immature open apical foramen and a symptomatic periapical pathosis, was diagnosed. Cone-beam computed tomography verified the specific spatial and stereoscopic data regarding the communication between the main root canal and pseudo root canal of the involved tooth. After removing the source of infection, a mineral trioxide aggregate was selected to fill and seal the pseudo root canal; additionally, pulp capping of the main canal was performed through the interconnections between the root canals in the middle segment to preserve pulp vitality and enable continual root formation and eventual root apex closure. CONCLUSION: We propose to conduct main root canal pulp capping for DI with communication between the main and pseudo root canals.

RESUMEN

Enantioselective total synthesis of otteliones A and B was accomplished. The key steps are radical cyclization of an alpha-iodoketone to construct the cis-hydrindanone skeleton and Suzuki-Miyaura coupling to incorporate the aromatic group. (+)-Ottelione A was converted to (-)-ottelione B on treatment with NaOH in THF.
