Converging evidence has revealed disturbances in the corticostriatolimic system are associated with suicidal behaviors in adults with major depressive disorder. However, the neurobiological mechanism that confers suicidal vulnerability in depressed adolescents is largely unknown. A total of 86 depressed adolescents with and without prior suicide attempts (SA) and 47 healthy controls underwent resting-state functional imaging (R-fMRI) scans. The dynamic amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (dALFF) was measured using sliding window approach. We identified SA-related alterations in dALFF variability primarily in the left middle temporal gyrus, inferior frontal gyrus, middle frontal gyrus (MFG), superior frontal gyrus (SFG), right SFG, supplementary motor area (SMA) and insula in depressed adolescents. Notably, dALFF variability in the left MFG and SMA was higher in depressed adolescents with recurrent suicide attempts than in those with a single suicide attempt. Moreover, dALFF variability was capable of generating better diagnostic and prediction models for suicidality than static ALFF. Our findings suggest that alterations in brain dynamics in regions involved in emotional processing, decision-making and response inhibition are associated with an increased risk of suicidal behaviors in depressed adolescents. Furthermore, dALFF variability could serve as a sensitive biomarker for revealing the neurobiological mechanisms underlying suicidal vulnerability.

The acid-base properties of supports have an enormous impact on catalytic reactions to regulate the selectivity and activity of supported catalysts. Herein, a train of Pd-X-UiO-66 (X = NO2 , NH2 , and CH3 ) catalysts with different acidity/alkalinity functional groups and encapsulated Pd(II) species is first developed, whose activities in dimethyl carbonate (DMC) catalysis are then investigated in details. Thereinto, the Pd-NO2 -UiO-66 catalyst with acidity functionalization exhibits the best catalytic behavior: the DMC selectivity stemmed from methyl nitrite (MN) is up to 68%, the conversion of CO is 73.4%. The obtained experimental results demonstrate that the NO2 group not only affected the interaction between X-UiO-66 and Pd(II) active sites but also play an indispensable role in the adsorption and activation of MN and CO, which remarkably promote the formation of the COOCH3 * intermediate and DMC product.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar I disorder (BD-I) is associated with a high risk of suicide attempt; however, the neural circuit dysfunction that confers suicidal vulnerability in individuals with this disorder remains largely unknown. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) allows non-invasive mapping of brain functional connectivity. The current study used an unbiased voxel-based graph theory analysis of rs-fMRI to investigate the intrinsic brain networks of BD-I patients with and without suicide attempt. METHODS: A total of 30 BD-I patients with suicide attempt (attempter group), 82 patients without suicide attempt (non-attempter group), and 67 healthy controls underwent rs-fMRI scan, and then global brain connectivity (GBC) was computed as the sum of connections of each voxel with all other gray matter voxels in the brain. RESULTS: Compared with the non-attempter group, we found regional differences in GBC values in emotion-encoding circuits, including the left superior temporal gyrus, bilateral insula/rolandic operculum, and right precuneus (PCu)/cuneus in the bipolar disorder (BD) attempter group, and these disrupted hub-like regions displayed fair to good power in distinguishing attempters from non-attempters among BD-I patients. GBC values of the right PCu/cuneus were positively correlated with illness duration and education in the attempter group. CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicate that abnormal connectivity patterns in emotion-encoding circuits are associated with the increasing risk of vulnerability to suicide attempt in BD patients, and global dysconnectivity across these emotion-encoding circuits might serve as potential biomarkers for classification of suicide attempt in BD patients.

BACKGROUND: Although common variants in a large collection of patients are associated with increased risk for bipolar disorder (BD), studies have only been able to predict 25%-45% of risks, suggesting that lots of variants that contribute to the risk for BD haven't been identified. Our study aims to identify novel BD risk genes. METHODS: We performed whole-exome sequencing of 27 individuals from 6 BD multi-affected Chinese families to identify candidate variants. Targeted sequencing of one of the novel risk genes, SERINC2, in additional sporadic 717 BD patients and 312 healthy controls (HC) validated the association. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were performed to evaluate the effect of the variant to brain structures from 213 subjects (4 BD subjects from a multi-affected family, 130 sporadic BD subjects and 79 HC control). RESULTS: BD pedigrees had an increased burden of uncommon variants in extracellular matrix (ECM) and calcium ion binding. By large-scale sequencing we identified a novel recessive BD risk gene, SERINC2, which plays a role in synthesis of sphingolipid and phosphatidylserine (PS). MRI image results show the homozygous nonsense variant in SERINC2 affects the volume of white matter in cerebellum. CONCLUSIONS: Our study identified SERINC2 as a risk gene of BD in the Chinese population.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: To clarify the effect of fluoride on splenic B cells, the endocytosis and surface marker expression levels of mouse splenic B cells were detected in vitro by flow cytometry. METHODS: Cells were stimulated with 10 µg/mL lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and varying concentrations of Sodium Fluoride (NaF) (0, 50 µM, 100 µM, 500 µM, 1000 µM). RESULTS: The results demonstrated that the endocytic capacity of B cells was enhanced by NaF at 50µM. NaF significantly enhanced CD80 expression at 50 µM and decreased CD86 expression at 500 µM. CD40 and CD138 expression on B cells were down-regulated at varying high concentrations of NaF. CONCLUSION: our results showed that the endocytic capacity, expression levels of CD40 and CD80 of B cells changed significantly at lower concentrations, whereas expression levels of CD138 and CD86 changed significantly at higher concentrations, suggesting that fluoride could inhibit immune function in animals.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder (BD) is a progressive condition. Investigating the neuroimaging mechanisms in depressed adolescents with subthreshold mania (SubMD) facilitates the early identification of BD. However, the global brain connectivity (GBC) patterns in SubMD patients, as well as the relationship with processing speed before the onset of full-blown BD, remain unclear. METHODS: The study involved 72 SubMD, 77 depressed adolescents without subthreshold mania (nSubMD), and 69 gender- and age-matched healthy adolescents (HCs). All patients underwent a clinical follow-up ranging from six to twelve months. We calculated the voxel-based graph theory analysis of the GBC map and conducted the TMT-A test to measure the processing speed. RESULTS: Compared to HCs and nSubMD, SubMD patients displayed distinctive GBC index patterns: GBC index decreased in the right Medial Superior Frontal Gyrus (SFGmed.R)/Superior Frontal Gyrus (SFG) while increased in the right Precuneus and left Postcentral Gyrus. Both patient groups showed increased GBC index in the right Inferior Temporal Gyrus. An increased GBC value in the right Supplementary Motor Area was exclusively observed in the nSubMD-group. There were opposite changes in the GBC index in SFGmed.R/SFG between two patient groups, with an AUC of 0.727. Additionally, GBC values in SFGmed.R/SFG exhibited a positive correlation with TMT-A scores in SubMD-group. LIMITATIONS: Relatively shorter follow-up duration, medications confounding, and modest sample size. CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that adolescents with subthreshold BD have specific impairments patterns at the whole brain connectivity level associated with processing speed impairments, providing insights into early identification and intervention strategies for BD.

Background: Mood disorders are very common among adolescents and include mainly bipolar disorder (BD) and major depressive disorder (MDD), with overlapping depressive symptoms that pose a significant challenge to realizing a rapid and accurate differential diagnosis in clinical practice. Misdiagnosis of BD as MDD can lead to inappropriate treatment and detrimental outcomes, including a poorer ultimate clinical and functional prognosis and even an increased risk of suicide. Therefore, it is of great significance for clinical management to identify clinical symptoms or features and biological markers that can accurately distinguish BD from MDD. With the aid of bibliometric analysis, we explore, visualize, and conclude the important directions of differential diagnostic studies of BD and MDD in adolescents. Materials and methods: A literature search was performed for studies on differential diagnostic studies of BD and MDD among adolescents in the Web of Science Core Collection database. All studies considered for this article were published between 2004 and 2023. Bibliometric analysis and visualization were performed using the VOSviewer and CiteSpace software. Results: In total, 148 publications were retrieved. The number of publications on differential diagnostic studies of BD and MDD among adolescents has been generally increasing since 2012, with the United States being an emerging hub with a growing influence in the field. Boris Birmaher is the top author in terms of the number of publications, and the Journal of Affective Disorders is the most published journal in the field. Co-occurrence analysis of keywords showed that clinical characteristics, genetic factors, and neuroimaging are current research hotspots. Ultimately, we comprehensively sorted out the current state of research in this area and proposed possible research directions in future. Conclusion: This is the first-ever study of bibliometric and visual analyses of differential diagnostic studies of BD and MDD in adolescents to reveal the current research status and important directions in the field. Our research and analysis results might provide some practical sources for academic scholars and clinical practice.

Background: Depression in adolescents is recognised as a global public health concern, but little is known about the trajectory of its clinical symptoms and pathogenesis. Understanding the nature of adolescents with depression and identifying early biomarkers can facilitate personalised intervention and reduce disease burden. Aims: To track multidimensional outcomes of adolescents with depression and develop objective biomarkers for diagnosis, as well as response to treatment, prognosis and guidance for early identification and intervention. Methods: This is a multidimensional cohort study on the Symptomatic trajectory and Biomarkers of Early Adolescent Depression (sBEAD). We planned to recruit more than 1000 adolescents with depression and 300 healthy controls within 5 years. Multidimensional clinical presentations and objective indicators are collected at baseline, weeks 4, 8, 12 and 24, and years 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. Conclusions: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first longitudinal cohort study that examines multidimensional clinical manifestations and multilevel objective markers in Chinese adolescents with depression. This study aims at providing early individualised interventions for young, depressed patients to reduce the burden of disease. Identifying cognitive dysfunction in the early stages of Bipolar Disorder (BD) can allow for early intervention. Previous studies have shown a strong correlation between cognitive dysfunction and number of manic episodes. The objective of this study was to apply machine learning (ML) techniques on a battery of cognitive tests to identify first-episode BD patients (FE-BD). Two cohorts of participants were used for this study. Cohort #1 included 74 chronic BD patients (CHR-BD) and 53 healthy controls (HC), while the Cohort #2 included 37 FE-BD and 18 age- and sex-matched HC. Cognitive functioning was assessed using the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB). The tests examined domains of visual processing, spatial memory, attention and executive function. We trained an ML model to distinguish between chronic BD patients (CHR-BD) and HC at the individual level. We used linear Support Vector Machines (SVM) and were able to identify individual CHR-BD patients at 77% accuracy. We then applied the model to Cohort #2 (FE-BD patients) and achieved an accuracy of 76% (AUC = 0.77). These results reveal that cognitive impairments may appear in early stages of BD and persist into later stages. This suggests that the same deficits may exist for both CHR-BD and FE-BD. These cognitive deficits may serve as markers for early BD. Our study provides a tool that these early markers can be used for detection of BD.

The placebo effect across psychiatric disorders is still not well understood. In the present study, we conducted meta-analyses including meta-regression, and machine learning analyses to investigate whether the power of placebo effect depends on the types of psychiatric disorders. We included 108 clinical trials (32,035 participants) investigating pharmacological intervention effects on major depressive disorder (MDD), bipolar disorder (BD) and schizophrenia (SCZ). We developed measures based on clinical rating scales and Clinical Global Impression scores to compare placebo effects across these disorders. We performed meta-analysis including meta-regression using sample-size weighted bootstrapping techniques, and machine learning analysis to identify the disorder type included in a trial based on the placebo response. Consistently through multiple measures and analyses, we found differential placebo effects across the three disorders, and found lower placebo effect in SCZ compared to mood disorders. The differential placebo effects could also distinguish the condition involved in each trial between SCZ and mood disorders with machine learning. Our study indicates differential placebo effect across MDD, BD, and SCZ, which is important for future neurobiological studies of placebo effects across psychiatric disorders and may lead to potential therapeutic applications of placebo on disorders more responsive to placebo compared to other conditions.

BACKGROUND: The ß2 subunit of the voltage-gated l-type calcium channel gene(CACNB2) rs11013860 polymorphism is a putative genetic susceptibility marker for bipolar disorder (BD). However, the neural effects of CACNB2 rs11013860 in BD are largely unknown. METHODS: Forty-six bipolar patients with first-episode mania and eighty-three healthy controls (HC) were genotyped for CACNB2 rs11013860 and were scanned with a 3.0 Tesla structural magnetic resonance imaging system to measure cortical thickness of prefrontal cortex (PFC) components (superior frontal cortex, orbitofrontal cortex, middle and inferior frontal gyri). RESULTS: Cortical thickness was thinner in patients on all PFC measurements compared to HC (p < 0.050). Moreover, we found a significant interaction between CACNB2 genotype and diagnosis for the right superior frontal cortical thickness (F = 8.190, p = 0.040). Bonferroni corrected post-hoc tests revealed that, in CACNB2 A-allele carriers, patients displayed thinner superior frontal thickness compared to HC (p < 0.001). In patients, CACNB2 A-allele carriers also exhibited reduced superior frontal thickness compared to CACNB2 CC-allele carriers (p = 0.016). LIMITATIONS: Lithium treatment may influence our results, and the sample size in our study is relatively small. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that the CACNB2 rs11013860 might impact PFC thickness in patients with first-episode mania. These findings provide evidence to support CACNB2 rs11013860 involvement in the emotion-processing neural circuitry abnormality in the early stage of BD, which will ultimately contribute to revealing the link between the variation in calcium channel genes and the neuropathological mechanism of BD.

The syntheses, structures, and characterization of six Ln(3+)-Cu(2+)-glycine (Hgly) coordination polymers are described in this paper. They represent three types of structures. Type I (Ln=La (1), Pr (2), and Sm (3)) is a 1D catenarian polymer comprising [Ln(2)] nodes bridged by four cis-Cu(gly)(2) linkers. Type II (Ln=Eu (4) and Dy (5)) is a 2D open framework with a 4(4)-net, composed of novel [Ln(6)Cu(22)] cluster nodes linked by trans-Cu(gly)(2) linkers. Furthermore, the inner structures of the [Ln(6)Cu(22)] nodes, and the connection mode between the nodes and linkers are slightly different for 4 and 5. Type III (Ln=Er (6)) is a 3D open framework with a novel 3(6)4(18)5(3)6 topology, made up of [Er(6)Cu(24)] cluster nodes and trans-Cu(gly)(2) linkers. The rich variety of the resulting structures owes itself mainly to the interselection between the dynamic control of metalloligands and cationic components. A transition from frequency dependence to frequency independence is observed in the field-induced magnetization lag for 1-3. The frequency dependence at low temperatures may come from the antiferromagnetic Cu--Cu interaction through the [Ln(2)] nodes, whereas the frequency independence may be due to the disappearance of the antiferromagnetic Cu--Cu interaction at high temperatures.

Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic metal leading to multiple forms of organ damage. Zinc (Zn) was reported as a potential antagonist against Cd toxicity. The present study investigates the antagonistic effect of Zn (20 µM) on Cd (20 or 50 µM) cytotoxicity in macrophages in vitro. The results shows that Cd exposure caused dose-dependent morphologic and ultrastructural alterations in RAW 264.7 macrophages. Zn supplement significantly inhibited Cd cytotoxicity in RAW 264.7 or HD-11 macrophages by mitigating cell apoptosis, excessive ROS output, and mitochondrial membrane depolarization. Notably, Zn supplement for 12 h remarkably prevented intracellular Cd2+ accumulation in 20 µM (95.99 ± 9.93 vs 29.64 ± 5.08 ng/106 cells; P = 0.0008) or 50 µM Cd (179.78 ± 28.66 vs 141.62 ± 22.15 ng/106 cells; P = 0.003) exposed RAW 264.7 cells. Further investigation found that Cd promoted metallothioneins (MTs) and metal regulatory transcription factor 1 (MTF-1) expression in RAW 264.7 macrophages. Twenty µM Zn supplement dramatically enhanced MTs and MTF-1 levels in Cd-exposed RAW 264.7 macrophages. Intracellular Zn2+ chelation or MTF-1 gene silencing inhibited MTs synthesis in Cd-exposed RAW 264.7 macrophages, which was accompanied by the declined expression of MTF-1, indicating that regulation of Zn on MTs was partially achieved by MTF-1 mobilization. In conclusion, this study demonstrates the antagonism of Zn against Cd cytotoxicity in macrophages and reveals its antagonistic mechanism by preventing Cd2+ bioaccumulation and promoting MTs expression.

Cognitive impairments exist during the euthymic period of bipolar disorder (BD). However, the impact of clinical factors (e.g., subthreshold symptoms and body mass index) on cognitive function in euthymic patients with bipolar disorder I is inconsistent. This cross-sectional study included 83 patients with euthymic BD I and 115 healthy controls. The Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status indices were used to assess cognitive function. We assessed the relationship between cognitive function and clinical impact factors. Performance in language abilities, attention, and immediate memory was worse in euthymic BD I. Spearman's correlation revealed that indices for immediate memory and attention were negatively correlated with subthreshold manic symptoms, and indices for delayed memory were positively correlated with years of education. Linear regressions indicated that subthreshold manic symptoms were the best predictors of immediate memory and attention. Years of education predicted performance in most cognitive domains, except immediate memory. Individuals with euthymic BD I exhibited cognitive deficits in language learning, attention, and immediate memory. Our study highlights the importance of the effect of subthreshold manic symptoms on cognitive function in remitted BD; these symptoms should receive more attention and be targeted in personalized clinical therapeutic interventions.

[reaction: see text] Catalytic systems generated in situ from the chiral PNNP ligands with iridium or rhodium hydride complexes exhibited excellent catalytic activity and good enantioselectivity in the asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of aromatic ketones without added base. The best result was obtained in the IrH(CO)(PPh(3))(3)-ligand 2 catalytic system with up to 99% yield and 97% ee.

OBJECTIVE: To understand the endemic situation of soil-borne nematodes and their distribution characteristics, so as to provide the evidence for formulating prevention strategy. METHODS: According to The Survey Program of Important Human Parasitic Diseases in Fujian Province, the survey spots were determined by the stratified cluster randomly sampling method. The eggs of Ascaris lurmbricoides, hookworm and Trichuris trichiura in feces were detected by Kato-Katz technique; the eggs of Enterobius vermnicularis were checked by rectal swabs using transparent adhesive tape. A questionnaire survey was performed for recording the gender, age, education levels and related epidemiological factors. RESULTS: Altogether 2002 residents in 21 villages of 4 towns were investigated. There were 169 residents infected with soil-borne nematodes (8.44%). The infection rates of hookworm, Trichuris trichiura and Ascaris lumbricoides were 4.35%, 1.70% and 0.15% respectively. The infection rate of Enterobius vermicularis was 13.48% (43/319) in children. The infection rates of soil-borne nematodes were higher in children aged below 7 years and residents aged above 45 years, and the infection rate was higher in the women than in the men. The infection rates 'vere negative correlated with the education levels. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of soil-borne nematodes has a reduction trend in Yunxiao County. However, the infection rate of hookworm is still high in areas of mainly planting economic crops. The infection rate of Enterobius vermicularis is still high in children, and we should pay more attention to it.

RESUMEN

A visible light active photodegration catalyst was prepared by doping MoO(3) into MgF(2) matrix. The addition of SO(4)(2-) into MoO(x)/MgF(2) could improve the catalytic activity greatly and an acetone conversion of 96.1% under visible light was obtained on the SO(4)(2-)/5%MoO(x)/MgF(2) (SMM) catalyst. By BET, XRD, Raman, FT-IR, XPS, UV-vis technology the specific area, structure and photoadsorption ability of the catalysts were characterized. The high photocatlaytic activity of the SMM catalyst is attributed to its large specific area, the high dispersal of MoO(3) domains in MgF(2) and the inhibiting effect of MgF(2) matrix on the electron-hole pair recombination.
