RESUMEN

Commercial leafy greens customers often require a negative preharvest pathogen test, typically by compositing 60 produce sample grabs of 150 to 375 g total mass from lots of various acreages. This study developed a preharvest sampling Monte Carlo simulation, validated it against literature and experimental trials, and used it to suggest improvements to sampling plans. The simulation was validated by outputting six simulated ranges of positive samples that contained the experimental number of positive samples (range, 2 to 139 positives) recovered from six field trials with point source, systematic, and sporadic contamination. We then evaluated the relative performance between simple random, stratified random, or systematic sampling in a 1-acre field to detect point sources of contamination present at 0.3% to 1.7% prevalence. Randomized sampling was optimal because of lower variability in probability of acceptance. Optimized sampling was applied to detect an industry-relevant point source [3 log(CFU/g) over 0.3% of the field] and widespread contamination [-1 to -4 log(CFU/g) over the whole field] by taking 60 to 1,200 sample grabs of 3 g. More samples increased the power of detecting point source contamination, as the median probability of acceptance decreased from 85% with 60 samples to 5% with 1,200 samples. Sampling plans with larger total composite sample mass increased power to detect low-level, widespread contamination, as the median probability of acceptance with -3 log(CFU/g) contamination decreased from 85% with a 150-g total mass to 30% with a 1,200-g total mass. Therefore, preharvest sampling power increases by taking more, smaller samples with randomization, up to the constraints of total grabs and mass feasible or required for a food safety objective. IMPORTANCE This study addresses a need for improved preharvest sampling plans for pathogen detection in leafy green fields by developing and validating a preharvest sampling simulation model, avoiding the expensive task of physical sampling in many fields. Validated preharvest sampling simulations were used to develop guidance for preharvest sampling protocols. Sampling simulations predicted that sampling plans with randomization are less variable in their power to detect low-prevalence point source contamination in a 1-acre field. Collecting larger total sample masses improved the power of sampling plans in detecting widespread contamination in 1-acre fields. Hence, the power of typical sampling plans that collect 150 to 375 g per composite sample can be improved by taking more, randomized smaller samples for larger total sample mass. The improved sampling plans are subject to feasibility constraints or to meet a particular food safety objective.

BACKGROUND: Although stroke is rare among the pediatric population, it is nevertheless associated with serious or life-threatening consequences. The etiologic factors of acute ischemic stroke (AIS) are likely to vary over the course of childhood development. The incidence rates of AIS, not previously systematically examined by pediatric age subgroup, could guide studies of its etiology. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to evaluate the incidence rate of AIS by age-group in the pediatric population (aged 0-17/18 years) and identify any common trends or sources of variability across different countries. METHODS: Rates of pediatric AIS were collated from a systematic literature review of published studies globally (1983-2020) and hospitalization records from Europe and the USA (2015-2018). Records that were included in the analysis reported the code or description used for AIS diagnosis and age-specific data for children aged 0-17/18 years. AIS incidence rates were summarized by age-group, data source, country, and geographic region. A meta-analysis was conducted to assess the heterogeneity of AIS rates in neonates. RESULTS: The pooled AIS incidence rate was 5.6 per 100,000 children across all records. When only records reporting the AIS incidence rates for children across the full age range (0-17/18 years) were analyzed, the pooled AIS incidence rate was 4.6 per 100,000 children and ranged from 7.0 per 100,000 (Germany) to 1.3 per 100,000 (Denmark). The highest pooled rates were observed in the 0-28-day age-group (24.6 per 100,000 live births), declining to the lowest rates in the 5-9-year age-group, and rising again in the 10-17/18-year age-group. AIS rates were the most heterogeneous in the 0-28-day age-group and across European countries. Significantly higher AIS rates in neonates were observed from hospital databases (35.9 per 100,000) than in the literature (19.4 per 100,000). AIS rates may be underestimated as pediatric AIS events are rare and challenging to diagnose, and limited age-specific data are available. CONCLUSIONS: Incidence rates of pediatric AIS by age-groups followed a consistent overall pattern of a reverse J-shaped curve, with the highest rates in neonates, across predominantly European and North American countries. Further research is warranted to examine if this pattern is observed in other geographic regions and to identify AIS risk factors specific to different phases of childhood development.

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been identified as critical regulators in gastric cancer (GC) progression. However, whether lncRNA small nucleolar host gene 4 (SNHG4) functions in GC development remains unknown. In this study, the bio-functional role of SNHG4 and its potential mechanism on GC progression were systematically dissected. To investigate the role of SNHG4 in GC, we silenced SNHG4 using short hairpin RNAs (shRNAs) to perform loss-of-function assays. The results showed that SNHG4 expression in GC cells was at a higher level compared to normal gastric mucosal epithelial cells. Knockdown of SNHG4 dramatically suppressed proliferation, migration and invasion, and blocked cell cycle progression of GC cells. Moreover, knockdown of SNHG4 upregulated microRNA-204-5p (miR-204-5p) expression, whereas downregulated ribonucleotide reductase subunit M2 (RRM2) expression in GC cells. Dual-luciferase reporter assay results showed that miR-204-5p was a direct target of SNHG4. Additionally, knockdown of SNHG4 suppressed GC tumorigenesis in xenograft mouse models. Taken together, these data demonstrated that knockdown of SNHG4 suppressed GC development by targeting miR-204-5p.

Probe sampling plans for aflatoxin in corn attempt to reliably estimate concentrations in bulk corn given complications like skewed contamination distribution and hotspots. To evaluate and improve sampling plans, three sampling strategies (simple random sampling, stratified random sampling, systematic sampling with U.S. GIPSA sampling schemes), three numbers of probes (5, 10, 100, the last a proxy for autosampling), four clustering levels (1, 10, 100, 1,000 kernels/cluster source), and six aflatoxin concentrations (5, 10, 20, 40, 80, 100 ppb) were assessed by Monte-Carlo simulation. Aflatoxin distribution was approximated by PERT and Gamma distributions of experimental aflatoxin data for uncontaminated and naturally contaminated single kernels. The model was validated against published data repeatedly sampling 18 grain lots contaminated with 5.8-680 ppb aflatoxin. All empirical acceptance probabilities fell within the range of simulated acceptance probabilities. Sensitivity analysis with partial rank correlation coefficients found acceptance probability more sensitive to aflatoxin concentration (-0.87) and clustering level (0.28) than number of probes (-0.09) and sampling strategy (0.04). Comparison of operating characteristic curves indicate all sampling strategies have similar average performance at the 20 ppb threshold (0.8-3.5% absolute marginal change), but systematic sampling has larger variability at clustering levels above 100. Taking extra probes improves detection (1.8% increase in absolute marginal change) when aflatoxin is spatially clustered at 1,000 kernels/cluster, but not when contaminated grains are homogenously distributed. Therefore, taking many small samples, for example, autosampling, may increase sampling plan reliability. The simulation is provided as an R Shiny web app for stakeholder use evaluating grain sampling plans.

Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic poses a great challenge to the treatment of lung cancer patients. Materials and methods: The PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases were searched for studies published before March 15, 2022, and Stata 14.0 software was used to perform a meta-analysis with a random-effects model. The odds ratio (OR) along with the corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI) was reported. Results: Our meta-analysis included 80 articles with 318,352 patients involved. The proportion of lung cancer patients infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) was 2.4% (95% CI: 0.02-0.03) prior to the Omicron variant outbreak. Among COVID-19 patients, those with lung cancer showed a higher mortality rate than those with other types of malignant solid tumors (OR = 1.82, 95% CI: 1.61-2.06) and non-cancer patients (OR = 4.67, 95% CI: 3.61-6.05); however, no significant difference was observed in the mortality rate between patients with lung cancer and those with hematologic malignancies (OR = 1.07, 95% CI: 0.85-1.33). SARS-CoV-2 infection significantly increased the mortality rate in lung cancer patients (OR = 8.94, 95% CI: 6.50-12.31). By contrast, the all-cause mortality rate in lung cancer patients (OR = 1.04, 95% CI: 0.69-1.57) and the proportion of patients diagnosed with advanced lung cancer (OR = 1.04, 95% CI: 0.85-1.27) did not significantly change before and after the pandemic. Conclusions: More attention should be paid on improving the health of lung cancer patients during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Cronobacteris a hazard in Powdered Infant Formula (PIF) products that is hard to detect due to localized and low-level contamination. We adapted a previously published sampling simulation to PIF sampling and benchmarked industry-relevant sampling plans across different numbers of grabs, total sample mass, and sampling patterns. We evaluated performance to detect published Cronobacter contamination profiles for a recalled PIF batch [42% prevalence, -1.8 ± 0.7 log(CFU/g)] and a reference, nonrecalled, PIF batch [1% prevalence, -2.4 ± 0.8 log(CFU/g)]. Simulating a range of numbers of grabs [n = 1-22,000 (representing testing every finished package)] with 300 g total composite mass showed that taking 30 or more grabs detected contamination reliably (<1% median probability to accept the recalled batch). Benchmarking representative sampling plans ([n = 30, mass grab = 10g], [n = 30, m = 25g], [n = 60, m = 25g], [n = 180, m = 25g]) showed that all plans would reject the recalled batch (<1% median probability to accept) but would rarely reject the reference batch (>50% median probability of acceptance, all plans). Overall, (i) systematic or stratified random sampling patterns are equal to or more powerful than random sampling of the same sample size and total sampled mass, and, (ii) taking more samples, even if smaller, can increase the power to detect contamination.

BACKGROUND: To detect the expression of HER-2 and P53 patients with gastric cancer and to analyze their correlation. METHODS: A total of 249 gastric cancer patients with complete clinical data who received surgical treatment from China-Japan Union Hospital of Jilin University were selected. The expression of Her-2 and P53 were detected by immunohistochemistry using the streptavidin-biotin-peroxidase method. The correlations between HER-2 and P53 in gastric cancer were analyzed. RESULTS: The positive rate of Her-2 and P53 expression was 37.3% (93/249) and 100% in all the specimens, respectively. The intensity of Her-2 expression was significantly different in patients with different degrees of gastric cancer cell differentiation (P = 0.012). Meanwhile, the expression of her-2 was closely related to whether the pathological type of gastric cancer was a signet-ring cell carcinoma (P = 0.022). Different percentage of positive P53 expression was closely related to the grade of tumor differentiation (P = 0.035) and positive Ki67 expression (P = 0.001). There was a significant positive correlation between HER-2 and P53 expression in gastric cancer (P = 0.003). These findings suggest that HER-2 and P53 have synergistic effects in gastric cancer. CONCLUSION: Her-2 and P53 are important markers for invasion and metastasis of gastric cancer. Combined detection of P53 and Her-2 expression in gastric cancer tissue can be used to assess prognosis and screen cancer patients at high risk of metastasis.

The hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis maintains normal metabolic balance and homeostasis in the human body through positive and negative feedback regulation. Its main regulatory mode is the secretion of thyrotropin (TSH), thyroid hormones (TH), and thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH). By binding to their corresponding receptors, they are involved in the development and progression of several systemic diseases, including digestive, cardiovascular, and central nervous system diseases. The HPT axis-related receptors include thyrotropin receptor (TSHR), thyroid hormone receptor (TR), and thyrotropin-releasing hormone receptor (TRHR). Recently, research on regulators has become popular in the field of biology. Several HPT axis-related receptor modulators have been used for clinical treatment. This study reviews the developments and recent findings on HPT axis-related receptor modulators. This will provide a theoretical basis for the development and utilisation of new modulators of the HPT axis receptors.

The study aims to reveal the clinical significance of perineural invasion (PNI) for gastric cancer prognosis and determine the risk factors of PNI in gastric cancer. This study retrospectively analyzed 350 patients who were diagnosed with GC and underwent curative surgical resection. Variables used to analyze survival included gender, age, degree of differentiation, T classification, lymph node metastasis, lymphovascular invasion, nerve invasion, mucinous adenocarcinoma component, and signet ring cell carcinoma component. The tumors of all patients were surgically resected. All resected specimens were stained with hematoxylin-eosin and immunohistochemical. The data for the patient's lymphovascular invasion and PNI came from the collected pathological reports. The results of the survival analysis showed that T staging (P < .001), lymph node metastasis (P < .001), lymphovascular invasion (P = .013), PNI (P = .001), and signet ring cell carcinoma components (P = .046) affect the survival time and have a statistically significant difference. Multivariate analysis indicated that the positivity of PNI was an independent prognostic factor (P = .014). T staging (P = .006) and lymph node metastasis (P = .013) were independent prognostic parameters too. Using the Spearman correlation analysis, the following clinicopathological indicators were associated with PNI positivity, such as tumor differentiation, T staging, lymph node metastasis, vascular invasion, and signet ring cell carcinoma components (P < .05). PNI is an independent marker of poor prognosis in patients with gastric cancer.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a common type of malignant digestive tract tumor with a high incidence rate worldwide. Currently, the clinical treatment of CRC predominantly include surgical resection, postoperative chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. However, these treatments contain severe limitations such as drug side effects, the risk of recurrence and drug resistance. Some natural compounds found in plants, fungi, marine animals, and bacteria have been shown to inhibit the occurrence and development of CRC. Although the explicit molecular mechanisms underlying the therapeutic effects of these compounds on CRC are not clear, classical signaling transduction pathways such as NF-kB and Wnt/ß-catenin are extensively regulated. In this review, we have summarized the specific mechanisms regulating the inhibition and development of CRC by various types of natural compounds through nine signaling pathways, and explored the potential therapeutic values of these natural compounds in the clinical treatment of CRC.

Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has posed increasing challenges to global health systems. Vaccination against COVID-19 can effectively prevent the public, particularly healthcare workers (HCWs), from being infected by this disease. Objectives: We aim to understand the factors influencing HCWs' acceptance of COVID-19 vaccines. Methods: We searched PubMed, Embase and Web of Science to collect literature published before May 15, 2022, about HCWs' acceptance of COVID-19 vaccines. The Newcastle-Ottawa quality assessment scale was used to assess the risk of bias and the quality of the included studies. We utilized Stata 14.0 software for this meta-analysis with a random-effects model, and odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were reported. This meta-analysis was conducted in alignment with the preferred reporting items for systematic review and meta-analysis (PRISMA) guideline. Results: Our meta-analysis included 71 articles with 93,508 HCWs involved. The research showed that the acceptance of vaccines had significantly increased among HCWs compared to non-HCWs (OR = 1.91, 95% CI: 1.16-3.12). A willingness to undergo COVID-19 vaccination was observed in 66% (95% CI: 0.61-0.67) of HCWs. Among the HCWs involved, doctors showed a generally increased intention to be vaccinated compared with nurses (OR = 2.22, 95% CI: 1.71-2.89). Additionally, males were found to hold more positive attitudes toward vaccination than females (OR = 1.81, 95% CI: 1.55-2.12). When the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines was improved, the vaccination acceptance of HCWs was greatly increased accordingly (OR = 5.03, 95% CI: 2.77-9.11). The HCWs who were willing to vaccinate against seasonal influenza showed an increased acceptance of COVID-19 vaccines (OR = 3.52, 95% CI: 2.34-5.28). Our study also showed that HCWs who were willing to be vaccinated against COVID-19 experienced a reduced rate of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection (OR = 0.78, 95% CI: 0.66-0.92). Conclusions: Our analysis revealed that the five factors of occupation, gender, vaccine effectiveness, seasonal influenza vaccines, and SARS-CoV-2 infection presumably affected the acceptance of COVID-19 vaccines among HCWs. It is essential to boost the confidence of HCWs in COVID-19 vaccines for the containment of the epidemic.

The aim of this study is to clarify the association between lymphovascular invasion (LVI) and/or perineural invasion (PNI) and the clinical characteristics and prognostic importance of rectal cancer, to provide a basis for early adjuvant treatment of rectal cancer. We retrospectively analyzed patients diagnosed with rectal cancer. This study involved rectal cancer tissue samples were obtained by surgical methods. Data on histological form, tumor classification, tumor size, gross growth pattern, blood and lymphatic vessel invasion, and PNI of the slice by HE staining were obtained from pathological examination. Immunohistochemical analysis of tissue samples was performed to determine p53 and EGFR expressions. There were 330 rectal cancer patients included in the study. LVI and/or PNI can be used as a high-risk factor for the prognosis of rectal cancer, predict prognostic survival, and guide adjuvant therapy. The detection rates of LVI and PNI were 32.1% and 16.1%. Differentiation grade, Union for International Cancer Control staging, tumor-lymph node-metastasis staging are significantly related to LVI or PNI. Multivariate logistic regression analysis shows that poor differentiation and N ≥ 1 can be used as independent risk factors and predictive factors for LVI. At the same time, poor differentiation and T > 3 is an independent risk factor for PNI. Only poor differentiation is the risk factor for poor prognosis in Cox risk regression analysis. In addition, the simultaneous occurrence of LVI and PNI is an independent prognostic factor.

This study investigated the role of microRNA (miRNA) miR-486-5p in oxidative stress injury in hepatocytes under the treatment of mesenchymal stem cell conditioned medium (MSC-CM). The oxidative stress injury in hepatocytes (L02) was induced by H2O2. Human umbilical cord blood MSC-CM (UCB-MSC-CM) was prepared. The effects of UCB-MSC-CM on the proliferation, apoptosis, and inflammatory response in L02 cells were detected by Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) assay, flow cytometry analysis, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Subsequently, the target of miR-486-5p was predicted using bioinformatics analysis, and the possible signaling pathway addressed by miR-486-5p was explored using western blot. We found that miR-486-5p expression was elevated following oxidative stress injury and was reduced after UCB-MSC-CM treatment. UCB-MSC-CM protected L02 cells against H2O2-induced injury by downregulation of miR-486-5p. Proviral integration site for Moloney murine leukemia virus 1 (PIM1) was verified to be targeted by miR-486-5p. UCB-MSC-CM upregulated the expression of PIM1 reduced by H2O2 in L02 cells. Additionally, silencing PIM1 attenuated the protective effects of miR-486-5p downregulation against oxidative stress injury. We further demonstrated that UCB-MSC-CM inhibited the TGF-ß/Smad signaling in H2O2-treated L02 cells by the miR-486-5p/PIM1 axis. Overall, UCB-MSC-CM attenuates oxidative stress injury in hepatocytes by downregulating miR-486-5p and upregulating PIM1, which may be related to the inhibition of TGF-ß/Smad pathway.

While complex sample pooling strategies have been developed for large-scale experiments with robotic liquid handling, many medium-scale experiments like mycotoxin screening by Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) are still conducted manually in 48- and 96-well plates. At this scale, the opportunity to save on reagent costs is offset by the increased costs of labor, materials, and risk-of-error caused by increasingly complex pooling strategies. This paper compares one-dimensional (1D), two-dimensional (2D), and Shifted Transversal Design (STD) pooling to study whether pooling affects assay accuracy and experimental cost and to provide guidance for when a human experimentalist might benefit from pooling. We approximated mycotoxin contamination in single corn kernels by fitting statistical distributions to experimental data (432 kernels for aflatoxin and 528 kernels for fumonisin) and used experimentally-validated Monte-Carlo simulation (10,000 iterations) to evaluate assay sensitivity, specificity, reagent cost, and pipetting cost. Based on the validated simulation results, assay sensitivity remains 100% for all four pooling strategies while specificity decreases as prevalence level rises. Reagent cost could be reduced by 70% and 80% in 48- and 96-well plates, with 1D and STD pooling being most reagent-saving respectively. Such a reagent-saving effect is only valid when prevalence level is < 21% for 48-well plates and < 13%-21% for 96-well plates. Pipetting cost will rise by 1.3-3.3 fold for 48-well plates and 1.2-4.3 fold for 96-well plates, with 1D pooling by row requiring the least pipetting. Thus, it is advisable to employ pooling when the expected prevalence level is below 21% and when the likely savings of up to 80% on reagent cost outweighs the increased materials and labor costs of up to 4 fold increases in pipetting.

Current detection methods for contamination of aflatoxin and fumonisin used in the corn industry are based on bulk level. However, literature demonstrates that contamination of these mycotoxins is highly skewed and bulk samples do not always represent accurately the overall contamination in a batch of corn. Single kernel analysis can provide an insightful level of analysis of the contamination of aflatoxin and fumonisin, as well as suggest a possible remediation to the skewness present in bulk detection. Current literature describes analytical methods capable of detecting aflatoxin and fumonisin at a single kernel level, such as liquid chromatography, fluorescence imaging, and reflectance imaging. These methods could provide tools to classify mycotoxin contaminated kernels and study potential co-occurrence of aflatoxin and fumonisin. Analysis at a single kernel level could provide a solution to the skewness present in mycotoxin contamination detection and offer improved remediation methods through sorting that could impact food security and management of food waste.

BACKGROUND: The present meta-analysis has evaluated the association between lncRNA ATB, prognosis and clinicopathological parameters in patients with digestive cancers. METHODS: Eligible studies were gathered from Web of Science, PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, WanFang databases and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (up to October 15, 2019). Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated to estimate the prognosis and clinicopathological parameters of lncRNA ATB in patients with digestive cancers. RESULT: We divided this study into two groups, pancreatic cancer (PC, downregulation) and non-pancreatic cancer (non-PC, upregulation). In the non-PC group, high expression levels of lncRNA ATB were significantly related to poor OS (pooled HR = 2.19, 95 % CI 1.68-2.85, P<0.00001). In contrast, increased levels of lncRNA ATB in pancreatic cancer tissue were favorable factors in OS (HR = 0.47, 95 % CI 0.32-0.69, P = 0.0001). The pooled data suggested that high expression levels of lncRNA ATB predicted a poor DFS in CRC and a poor RFS in HCC. Increased expression of lncRNA ATB was correlated with negative lymph node metastasis and TNM stage in the non-PC group. In contrast, lncRNA ATB were favorable factors for LNM and TNM stages in pancreatic cancer. CONCLUSION: LncRNA ATBs, whether cancer promoters or suppressors, were potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets for digestive system cancers.

BACKGROUND: The specific function of pre-mRNA processing factors (Prps) in human malignancies has not been yet investigated. The aim of the present study was to determine the impacts of Prp8 in a common human malignancy, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: RT-qPCR and Western blotting were performed to measure the expression levels of Prp8 in various HCC cell lines and HCC tissues. A hepatic astrocyte line was transfected with a eukaryotic expression plasmid to overexpress Prp8. In addition, the endogenous expression level of Prp8 in HCC cells was silenced using a short hairpin RNA method, and the role of Prp8 on cell proliferation and migration was examined by Cell Counting Kit-8, wound healing assay and Transwell assays following knockdown in HCC cells, and overexpression in astrocytes. RESULTS: Upregulation of Prp8 expression was found to be associated with poor clinical outcomes in patients with HCC. The upregulation of Prp8 promoted cell viability, metastasis and the activity of the PI3K/Akt pathway in hepatic astrocytes cells and HCC cells. Interestingly, loss of Prp8 had no obvious impact on cell viability and migration in hepatic astrocytes, but significantly inhibit the cell malignancy of HCC cells. Functionally, the inhibition of the PI3K/Akt pathway reversed the increased cell viability and migration of HCC cells induced by Prp8 via inhibiting EMT process. CONCLUSION: Collectively, the present results suggested that Prp8 served as a tumor promoter in HCC by targeting and regulating the PI3K/Akt pathway.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the outcomes of permanent Iodine-125 (125I) radiotherapy for patients with unresectable retroperitoneal malignant tumor. METHODS: Twenty-six patients with retroperitoneal malignant tumors were implanted with 125I seeds under ultrasound guidance from June 2012 to June 2015. The patients were then followed up for 3 to 36 months after the implantation. During the follow-up, pain relief, control of tumor growth, over survival rate, and complications were evaluated. RESULTS: Most of the patients (90%, 24/26) suffered from mild to severe pain before 125I seed treatment. After 1-month treatment, 16 patients had 100% pain relief, 4 patients had at least 50% pain relief, and 4 patients had no response, showing 83.3% of pain relief response. Results of computed tomography scan after 2-month 125I treatment indicated that 3 patients had complete remission in the tumor size, 20 patients had partial remission in tumor size, 2 patients were stable, and 1 patient had progressive disease, accounting for 88.4% response in tumor size remission. The median survival of the 26 patients was 11 months. The 1-year and 2-year overall survival rates were 46% and 27%, respectively. The median survival of the 5 patients with pancreatic cancer was 9.4 months. None of the patients had any severe complications. CONCLUSIONS: 125I implantation could effectively relieve the pain in the patients with advanced primary or metastatic retroperitoneal malignant tumors and suppress local tumor progress.
