RESUMEN

In this work, we present a multi-mode resonator based on SU-8 polymer and experimentally verify that the resonator showed mode discrimination can be used as a sensor with high performance. According to field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) images, the fabricated resonator shows sidewall roughness which is canonically considered to be undesirable after a typical development process. In order to analyze the effect of sidewall roughness, we conduct the resonator simulation considering the roughness under various conditions. Mode discrimination still occurs even in the presence of sidewall roughness. In addition, waveguide width controllable by UV exposure time effectively contributes to mode discrimination. To verify the resonator as a sensor, we perform a temperature variation experiment, which results in a high sensitivity of about 630.8 nm/RIU. This result shows that the multi-mode resonator sensor fabricated via a simple process is competitive with other single-mode waveguide sensors.

RESUMEN

With the remarkable advances in vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) in recent decades, VCSELs have been considered promising light sources in the field of optical wireless communications. However, off-the-shelf VCSELs still have a limited modulation bandwidth to meet the multi-Gb/s data rate requirements imposed on the next-generation wireless communication system. Recently, employing machine learning (ML) techniques as a method to tackle such issues has been intriguing for researchers in wireless communication. In this work, through a systematic analysis, it is shown that the ML technique is also very effective in VCSEL-based visible light communication. Using a commercial VCSEL and bidirectional long short-term memory (Bi-LSTM)-based ML scheme, a high-speed visible light communication (VLC) link with a data rate of 13.5 Gbps is demonstrated, which is the fastest single channel result from a cost-effective, off-the-shelf VCSEL device, to the best of the authors' knowledge.

RESUMEN

Vehicle-to-vehicle communication based on visible light communication has gained much attention. This work proposes a smart license plate receiver incorporated with a fluorescent concentrator, enabling a fast vehicle-to-vehicle communication with a large field of view and high optical gain. Communication performance is experimentally analyzed using off-the-shelf light-emitting diode-based headlamps for low-latency direct line of sight channel. Additionally, a blue laser diode-based beam-steering and tracking system, through image processing of taillights with a steerable mirror, is investigated. Data rates of 54 Mbps from the headlamps and 532 Mbps from the beam-steering channel with ±25° are demonstrated. In addition, real-time video streaming through the beam-steering channel is presented.

RESUMEN

Fluorescent planar concentrators have been proposed as optical concentrators that can have both a wide field of view and a high optical gain stemming from a large collection area for optical wireless communications. However, the fluorescent concentrators with such a large collection area often lead to a low light coupling efficiency due to the edge coupling mechanism leading to a considerable optical power loss. In this work, an analysis of the light coupling efficiency enhancement in the electrical power gain is presented. In particular, a practical method to improve the coupling efficiency by introducing edge and back reflection using Lambertian-, specular-, and retro-reflectors is presented. It is demonstrated that by choosing the optimal reflectors, the received signal strength can be improved by more than a factor of two. Also demonstrated with the proposed method is a data rate more than 1.12 Gbps with bit error rate less than 3.8 × 10-3 using a DC-biased optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the first Gbps class demonstration using a commercial fluorescent planar concentrator.

RESUMEN

Device-to-device (D2D) communication that delivers a dedicated channel with low latency and high spectral efficiency has been considered an essential solution for vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication. To achieve such D2D-V2V communication, the beam-steering technique using optical wavelengths can be an attractive candidate due to the advanced optical wireless technologies for point-to-point applications. Recently, there has been research on high-performance optical beam-steering techniques based on microelectromechanical systems mirrors and spatial light modulators in quasi-static indoor environments. Due to the optomechanical complexity, size, and cost, however, their suitability for D2D-V2V applications is problematic. In this work, a cost-effective optical beam-steering system based on a fluorescent reflector and stereo vision for D2D-V2V is introduced. Proof-of-concept demonstration using off-the-shelf devices and components shows that the proposed system can support +-30-deg field of view with a data rate of 300 Mb/s.

RESUMEN

Indoor smart-farming based on artificial grow lights has gained attention in the past few years. In modern agricultural technology, the growth status is generally monitored and controlled by radio-frequency communication networks. However, it is reported that the radio frequency (RF) could negatively impact the growth rate and the health condition of the vegetables. This work proposes an energy-efficient solution replacing or augmenting the current RF system by utilizing light-emitting diodes (LEDs) as the grow lights and adopting visible light communications and optical camera communication for the smart-farming systems. In particular, in the proposed system, communication data is modulated via a 24% additional green grow LED light that is also known to be beneficial for the growth of the vegetables. Optical cameras capture the modulated green light reflected from the vegetables for the uplink connection. A combination of white ceiling LEDs and photodetectors provides the downlink, enabling an RF-free communication network as a whole. In the proposed architecture, the smart-farming units are modularized, leading to flexible mobility. Following theoretical analysis and simulations, a proof-of-concept demonstration presents the feasibility of the proposed architecture by successfully demonstrating the maximum data rates of 840 b/s (uplink) and 20 Mb/s (downlink).

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Several factors contribute to post-anesthetic hepatic dysfunction, including a decrease in oxygen supply to the liver, direct physical compression of the liver, viral hepatitis, blood transfusions, preexisting hepatic dysfunction, and the use of hepatotoxic drugs. Diagnosing volatile anesthetic drug-induced liver injury (VA-DILI) involves excluding these causes. CASE: The patient underwent total mastectomy under anesthesia using sevoflurane. He had diabetes, and no abnormal results were found on preoperative laboratory examinations, and surgery was uneventful. Abnormal laboratory findings were observed after surgery, including an aspartate aminotransferase level of 1,417 IU/L, an alanine aminotransferase level of 2,176 IU/L, and a total bilirubin level of 3.8 mg/dl. He presented with symptoms of mild icteric sclera, fatigue, and pruritus. After ruling out other causes of liver injury, we concluded that these results indicated VA-DILI. CONCLUSIONS: VA-DILI, though rare, we should be aware of the association between the disease and the use of halogenated anesthetics.

RESUMEN

Augmented reality (AR) applications require displays with an extended color gamut to facilitate the presentation of increasingly immersive content. The waveguide (WG) display technology, which is typical AR demonstration method, is a critical constraint on the color gamut of AR systems because of the intrinsic properties of the holographic optical elements (HOEs) used in this technology. To overcome this limitation, we introduce a method of spatially modulated diffractive optics that can expand the color gamut of HOE-based WG displays. This approach involves spatial modulation using sub-pixelized HOEs, which enables the diffraction of red, green, and blue rays along identical directions. The proposed structure considers both the characteristics of the HOE and the wavelength sensitivity of the observer to optimize the color gamut. Consequently, an expanded color gamut was achieved. The results of the theoretical and experimental analyses substantiate the effectiveness and practicality of this method in enhancing the color gamut of HOE-based WG displays. Thus, the proposed method can facilitate the implementation of more immersive AR displays.

RESUMEN

Glycated proteins play a crucial role in various biological pathways and the pathogenesis of human diseases. A comprehensive analysis of glycated proteins is essential for understanding their biological significance. However, their low abundance and heterogeneity in complex biological samples necessitate an enrichment procedure prior to their detection. Current enrichment strategies primarily rely on the boronic acid (BA) affinity method combined with functional nanoparticles; however, the effectiveness of these approaches is often suboptimal. In this study, a novel nanocluster (NC)-based enrichment material was synthesized for the first time, characterized as Au22SG18 functionalized with 24 BA groups, in which SG is glutathione. The functionalized BA established a reversible covalent bond with the cis-dihydroxy group through pH adjustment, enabling selective enrichment of glycated peptides. After the optimization of the enrichment protocol, we demonstrated highly sensitive and selective enrichment of standard glycopeptides using the NC-based enrichment material, exhibiting excellent reusability. Efficient enrichment was also demonstrated for the glycated proteome from human serum. These results highlight the potential of the atomically well-defined ultrasmall Au NCs as a powerful tool for high-throughput analysis of glycated peptides.

RESUMEN

Multi-omics integrates diverse types of biological information from genomic, proteomic, and metabolomics experiments to achieve a comprehensive understanding of complex cellular mechanisms. However, this approach is also challenging due to technical issues such as limited sample quantities, the complexity of data pre-processing, and reproducibility concerns. Furthermore, existing studies have primarily focused on technical performance assessment and the presentation of modified protocols through quantitative comparisons of the identified protein counts. Nevertheless, the specific differences in these comparisons have been minimally investigated. Here, findings obtained from various omics approaches were profiled using various extraction methods (methanol extraction, the Folch method, and Matyash methods for metabolites and lipids) and two digestion methods (filter-aided sample preparation (FASP) and suspension traps (S-Trap)) for resuspended proteins. FASP was found to be more effective for the identification of membrane-related proteins, whereas S-Trap excelled in isolating nuclear-related and RNA-processing proteins. Thus, FASP may be suitable for investigating the immune response and bacterial infection pathways, whereas S-Trap may be more effective for studies focused on the mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases. Moreover, regarding the choice of extraction method, the single-phase method identified organic compounds and compounds related to fatty acids, whereas the two-phase extraction method identified more hydrophilic compounds such as nucleotides. Lipids with strong hydrophobicity, such as ChE and TG, were identified in the two-phase extraction results. These findings highlight that significant differences among small molecules are primarily identified due to the varying polarities of extraction solvents. These results, obtained by considering variables such as human error and batch effects in the sample preparation step, offer comprehensive and detailed results not previously provided by existing studies, thereby aiding in the selection of the most suitable pre-processing approach.

RESUMEN

In this study, Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS)-based metabolomics profiling was conducted to elucidate the urinary profiles of premature infants during early and late postnatal stages. As a result, we discovered significant excretion of maternal drugs in early-stage infants and identified crucial metabolites like hormones and amino acids. These findings shed light on the maternal impact on neonatal metabolism and underscore the beneficial effects of breastfeeding on the metabolism of essential amino acids in infants. This research not only enhances our understanding of maternal-infant nutritional interactions and their long-term implications for preterm infants but also offers critical insights into the biochemical characteristics and physiological mechanisms of preterm infants, laying a groundwork for future clinical studies focused on neonatal development and health.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: Breast cancer brain metastases (BCBM) may involve subtypes that differ from the primary breast cancer lesion. This study aimed to develop a radiomics-based model that utilizes preoperative brain MRI for multiclass classification of BCBM subtypes and to investigate whether the model offers better prediction accuracy than the assumption that primary lesions and their BCBMs would be of the same subtype (non-conversion model) in an external validation set. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The training and external validation sets each comprised 51 cases (102 cases total). Four machine learning classifiers combined with three feature selection methods were trained on radiomic features and primary lesion subtypes for prediction of the following four subtypes: 1) hormone receptor (HR)+/human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-, 2) HR+/HER2+, 3) HR-/HER2+, and 4) triple-negative. After training, the performance of the radiomics-based model was compared to that of the non-conversion model in an external validation set using accuracy and F1-macro scores. RESULTS: The rate of discrepant subtypes between primary lesions and their respective BCBMs were 25.5% (n=13 of 51) in the training set and 23.5% (n=12 of 51) in the external validation set. In the external validation set, the accuracy and F1-macro score of the radiomics-based model were significantly higher than those of the non-conversion model (0.902 vs. 0.765, p=0.004; 0.861 vs. 0.699, p=0.002). CONCLUSION: Our radiomics-based model represents an incremental advance in the classification of BCBM subtypes, thereby facilitating a more appropriate personalized therapy.

RESUMEN

Pacific abalone (Haliotis discus hannai) is a commercially important mollusk; therefore, improvement of its growth performance and quality has been emphasized. During embryonic development, abalones undergo a series of distinct larval stages, including swimming veliger larvae, juveniles, and mature individuals, and their biomolecular composition varies depending on the developmental stage. Therefore, in the present study, we performed untargeted lipid profiling of abalone tissues at different developmental stages as well as the hemolymph of mature female and male abalones using ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. These profiles can provide meaningful information to understand compositional changes in lipids through abalone metamorphosis and development. A total of 132 lipids belonging to 15 classes were identified from abalone tissues at different developmental stages. Moreover, 21 lipids belonging to 8 classes were identified from the hemolymph of mature abalones. All data were processed following strict criteria to provide accurate information. Triglycerides and phosphatidylcholines were the major lipid components identified in both tissues and hemolymph, accounting for, respectively, 27% and 15% of all lipids in tissues and, respectively, 24% and 38% of all lipids in the hemolymph. Of note, lysophosphatidylcholine was only detected in the tissues of mature abalones, paving the way for further analyses of abalone lipids based on developmental stages. The present findings offer novel insights into the lipidome of abalone tissues and hemolymph at different developmental stages, building a foundation for improving the efficiency and quality of abalone aquaculture.

RESUMEN

The present work describes the development of an organic photodiode (OPD) receiver for high-speed optical wireless communication. To determine the optimal communication design, two different types of photoelectric conversion layers, bulk heterojunction (BHJ) and planar heterojunction (PHJ), are compared. The BHJ-OPD device has a -3 dB bandwidth of 0.65 MHz (at zero bias) and a maximum of 1.4 MHz (at -4 V bias). A 150 Mbps single-channel visible light communication (VLC) data rate using this device by combining preequalization and machine learning (ML)-based digital signal processing (DSP) is demonstrated. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the highest data rate ever achieved on an OPD-based VLC system by a factor of 40 over the previous fastest reported. Additionally, the proposed OPD receiver achieves orders of magnitude higher spectral efficiency than the previously reported organic photovoltaic (OPV)-based receivers.

RESUMEN

We screened and identified a NH3-N-removing bacterial strain, Bacillus sp. KGN1, and a [Formula: see text] removing strain, Vibrio sp. KGP1, from 960 indigenous marine isolates from seawater and marine sediment from Tongyeong, South Korea. We developed eco-friendly high-efficiency marine sludge (eco-HEMS), and inoculated these marine bacterial strains into the marine sediment. A laboratory-scale sequencing batch reactor (SBR) system using the eco-HEMS for marine wastewater from land-based fish farms improved the treatment performance as indicated by 88.2% removal efficiency (RE) of total nitrogen (initial: 5.6 mg/L) and 90.6% RE of total phosphorus (initial: 1.2 mg/L) under the optimal operation conditions (food and microorganism (F/M) ratio, 0.35 g SCODCr/g mixed liquor volatile suspended solids (MLVSS)·d; dissolved oxygen (DO) 1.0 ± 0.2 mg/L; hydraulic retention time (HRT), 6.6 h; solids retention time (SRT), 12 d). The following kinetic parameters were obtained: cell yield (Y), 0.29 g MLVSS/g SCODCr; specific growth rate (µ), 0.06 d-1; specific nitrification rate (SNR), 0.49 mg NH3-N/g MLVSS·h; specific denitrification rate (SDNR), 0.005 mg [Formula: see text]/g MLVSS·h; specific phosphorus uptake rate (SPUR), 0.12 mg [Formula: see text]/g MLVSS·h. The nitrogen- and phosphorus-removing bacterial strains comprised 18.4% of distribution rate in the microbial community of eco-HEMS under the optimal operation conditions. Therefore, eco-HEMS effectively removed nitrogen and phosphorus from highly saline marine wastewater from land-based fish farms with improving SNR, SDNR, and SPUR values in more diverse microbial communities. RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to collect nasalance scores for normal Korean-speaking children and adults and to determine whether age, vowel contexts, and stimulus length influence nasalance scores. METHODS: Fifty-seven children aged 4-6 years and 17 adults participated in the study. Mean nasalance scores were obtained for eight sentences devoid of nasal consonants divided into the vowel/a/and/i/contexts; the sentences consisted of 4, 8, 16, and 31 syllables. All subjects were asked to repeat the speech stimuli twice after the examiner. The headset of the nasometer was replaced between the first and second recordings. An average value of the nasalance scores from the two recordings for each stimulus was calculated and used in the statistical analysis as a representative measure for each subject. RESULTS: Mean and standard deviations of nasalance scores were obtained for each speech stimulus and each age group. The statistical analysis indicated significant effects of age and vowel context and a significant interaction between age and the vowel context on nasalance scores. However, the effect of stimulus length on nasalance scores was not significant. All speakers had higher nasalance scores for the vowel/i/contexts than for the vowel/a/contexts. Adults had higher nasalance scores compared to children in both vowel contexts. CONCLUSIONS: These normal nasalance values from Korean-speaking children aged 4-6 years will provide important reference information for resonance assessment of children with cleft palate who have been considered for secondary palatal surgery. The results of the study suggest that subjects' age and the vowel content of speech stimuli should be carefully considered when interpreting the nasalance scores.
