RESUMEN

Objectives: For many low-income, Latinx and Asian first-generation students, family is a central motivator for obtaining a college degree. Yet, striving for upward mobility yields unanticipated psychological consequences. Specifically, family achievement guilt is a socioemotional experience related to "leaving family" to attend college. As a relatively understudied phenomenon, prior work has likely underrepresented the ways low-income, Latinx and Asian first-generation students experience guilt in the university. To address this gap, the current study aimed to refine the concept of family achievement guilt by exploring its different facets. Method: We utilized in-depth, semistructured interviews with 34 low-income, Latinx and Asian first-generation students. Results: Using both inductive and deductive analytic methods, we constructed four facets of guilt. Participants shared feeling guilt related to leaving family behind, having more privileges in the university context, becoming culturally different than family members, and experiencing financial distress. Conclusions: Unpacking family achievement guilt experiences of a fast-growing student population contributes to our understanding of theory and of possible support mechanisms. RESUMEN

Schizophrenia is a complex mental disorder associated with not only cognitive dysfunctions, such as memory and attention deficits, but also changes in basic sensory processing. Although most studies on schizophrenia have focused on disturbances in higher-order brain functions associated with the prefrontal cortex or frontal cortex, recent investigations have also reported abnormalities in low-level sensory processes, such as the visual system. At very early stages of the disease, schizophrenia patients frequently describe in detail symptoms of a disturbance in various aspects of visual perception that may lead to worse clinical symptoms and decrease in quality of life. Therefore, the aim of this review is to describe the various studies that have explored the visual issues in schizophrenia.

RESUMEN

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a hereditary connective tissue disorder that leads to bone weakness and deformities, especially in the spine, which can lead to poor outcomes. The aim of this study was to find patterns and risk factors in spinal deformities in patients with OI.In a retrospective study, 70 patients with OI were selected. Radiographs of the spine were evaluated. We observed the presence or absence of the following changes: biconcave vertebrae, chest and vertebral deformities, unilateral rib, and thoracolumbar kyphosis. The greater curve was considered the primary one, and the secondary curve considered compensatory. In the study sample, we observed that the patients' ages ranged between 7 and 50 years, with a mean equal to 13 years, and 76% had scoliosis. In 68% of cases the main curve in the thoracic region was observed with the convexity to the right. The following was found in patients with OI: scoliosis, biconcave vertebrae, vertebral and chest deformity, unilateral rib, and thoracolumbar kyphosis. The thoracolumbar kyphosis is highly associated with thoracic hypokyphosis in patients with OI.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: We sought to evaluate the visual pathway deficits in schizophrenic patients, compared with their parents and healthy controls, using Matrix frequency doubling technology (FDT) perimetry. Matrix FDT is an ophthalmic test used to detect visual field loss. METHOD: A total of 13 patients, 13 parents, and 12 healthy controls were enrolled in the study. Participants were subjected to Matrix FDT perimetry in a single test session. We analyzed the mean deviation for each eye and used a generalized estimated equation to evaluate differences among the groups and correct the dependency between the eyes. RESULTS: The global mean deviation (presented as the mean of both eyes) was significantly lower in the schizophrenic patients than in their parents or controls. Analysis of the general sensitivity of the fibers crossing the optic chiasm showed a difference between the groups (P = 0.006), indicating that the sensitivity of the fibers crossing the optic chiasm was lower than those which did not cross. But when we analyzed the specific groups, the difference between the fibers was not considerable. Comparison of the right and left hemispheres showed that general sensitivity was lower for the left hemisphere, but when we analyzed specific groups, the difference was not significant (P = 0.29). CONCLUSION: These findings are suggestive of a lower global sensitivity in schizophrenic patients and their parents compared with controls. This difference may be an endophenotype of schizophrenia. The present study adds to a growing body of research on early-stage visual processing deficits in schizophrenia.

RESUMEN

The Northeastern Regional Centre for Nuclear Sciences (CRCN-NE), National Nuclear Energy Commission, has organized for the first time in nuclear medicine services (NMSs) in the Brazilian northeast region a comparison of activity measurements for (99m)Tc, (131)I, (67)Ga, (201)Tl and (57)Co. This tool is widely utilized to evaluate not only the accuracy of radionuclide calibrators, but also the competence of NMSs to measure the activity of the radiopharmaceuticals and the performance of the personnel involved in these measurements. The comparison results showed that 90% of the results received from participants are within the ±10% limit established by the Brazilian Norm.

RESUMEN

Intercomparison is an important tool for quality assessment, because equipment performance and procedures are evaluated and compared. In nuclear medicine, this tool is wide utilized to evaluate the ability of the services to measure activities of radiopharmaceuticals which will be administered to the patients in diagnostic or therapeutic procedures. In this work, a comparison program of activity measurements of the 99mTc, 131I, 67Ga and 201Tl radionuclides was established in Pernambuco State, at the Brazilian Northeast, with the aim of evaluating the quality of routine measurements carried out in the NMS. The results in each NMS are sent to the Standard laboratory, which compares these results with the acceptance limits recommended by national regulations. All NMS participants complied with the limit established for the accuracy of measurement (+/-10 percent) and showed that their radionuclide calibrators are adequate for measurement of the activities of radiopharmaceuticals.
