RESUMEN

Background: Impaired cognitive ability to anticipate the required control for an upcoming task in patients with stroke may affect rehabilitation outcome. The cortical excitability of task-related motor anticipation for upper limb movement induced by virtual reality (VR) training remains unclear. Aims: To investigate the effect of VR training on the cortical excitability of motor anticipation when executing upper limb movement in patients with subacute stroke. Methods: A total of thirty-six stroke survivors with upper limb hemiparesis resulting from the first occurrence of stroke within 1 to 3 months were recruited. Participants were randomly allocated to the VR intervention group or conventional therapy group. Event-related potentials (ERPs) and electromyography (EMG) were used to simultaneously record the cortical excitability and muscle activities during palmar grasp motion. Outcome measures of the contingent negative variation (CNV) latency and amplitude, EMG reaction time, Upper Limb Fugl-Meyer Assessment (UL-FMA), Action Research Arm Test (ARAT), and National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) were recorded pre- and postintervention. The between-group difference was analysed by mixed model ANOVA. Results: The EMG onset time of the paretic hand in the VR group was earlier than that observed in the control group (t = 2.174, p = 0.039) postintervention. CNV latency reduction postintervention was larger in the VR group than in the control group (t = 2.411, p = 0.021) during paretic hand movement. The reduction in CNV amplitude in the VR group was larger in the VR group than in the control group (p < 0.001 for all electrodes except for C3) when executing paretic hand movement. ARAT and UL-FMA scores were significantly higher in the VR group than in the control group (p = 0.019 and p = 0.037, respectively) postintervention. No significant difference in the reduction in NIHSS was found between the VR and control groups (p = 0.072). Conclusions: VR intervention is superior to conventional therapy to improve the cognitive neural process of motor anticipation and reduce the excessive compensatory activation of the contralesional hemisphere. The improvements observed in the cognitive neural process corroborated with the improvements in hand function.

RESUMEN

Myocardial infarction (MI) is one of the most serious health threats, resulting in huge physical and economic burdens worldwide. Wnt signaling pathways play an important role in developmental processes such as tissue patterning, cell differentiation and cell division. Appropriate regulation of the activities of Wnt signaling pathways is also important for heart development and healing in post-MI heart. Moreover, Wnt pathway inhibitors have been identified as novel antitumor drugs and applied in ongoing clinical trials. This research progress has generated increasing interests for investigating the effects of Wnt pathway inhibitors on MI healing. In this short review, we summarize the roles of Wnt signaling pathways in post-MI heart and the therapeutic effects of Wnt pathway inhibitors on MI, and discuss the underlying mechanisms of Wnt pathway inhibitors in cardiac repairing.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Crocetin is a carotenoid extracted from the traditional Chinese medical herb saffron. Previous studies have demonstrated that crocetin possesses anticancer properties that are effective against various cancers. As an extension of our earlier study, the present study explored the underlying mechanisms in crocetin's anticancer effect on KYSE-150 cells. The phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (AKT), Mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK), and p53/p21 signal pathways play an important role in carcinogenesis, progression, and metastasis of carcinoma cells. Thus, we investigated crocetin's effects on the PI3K/AKT, MAPK, and p53/p21 pathways in esophageal squamous carcinoma cell line KYSE-150 cells. METHODS: KYSE-150 cells were treated with various concentrations of crocetin. 3-(4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 5-diphenyltertrazolium bromide assay, Annexin V/PI stain as well as Rh123 stain were used to evaluate the cell viability, apoptosis, and MMP. Western blot was used to detect the expression of PI3K, AKT, ERK1/2, p38, c-Jun NH-terminal kinase (JNK), P53, P21, Bcl-2, Bax, and cleaved caspase-3, which were associated with cell proliferation and apoptosis. RESULTS: Our results showed that crocetin significantly inhibited the proliferation of KYSE-150 cells in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Crocetin also markedly induced cell apoptosis. Furthermore, we have found that crocetin not only inhibited the activation of PI3K/AKT, extracellular signal-regulated kinase-1/2 (ERK1/2), and p38 but also upregulated the p53/p21 level. These regulations ultimately triggered the mitochondrial-mediated apoptosis pathway with an eventual disruption of MMP, increased levels of Bax and cleaved caspase-3, and decreased levels of Bcl-2. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggested that crocetin interfered with multiple signal pathways in KYSE-150 cells. Therefore, this study suggested that crocetin could potentially be used as a therapeutic candidate for the treatment of esophageal cancer.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Impaired visual mental imagery is an important symptom of depression and has gradually become an intervention target for cognitive behavioral therapy. METHODS: Our study involved a total of 25 healthy controls (HC) and 23 individuals with moderate depressive symptoms (MD). This study explored the attentional mechanism supporting visual mental imagery impairments in depression using the Vividness of Visual Imagery Questionnaire (VVIQ), attentional network test (ANT), and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI). The intrinsic activity of attention-related regions relative to those supporting visual mental imagery was identified in depression patients. In addition, a meta-analysis was used to describe the cognitive function related to this intrinsic activity. RESULTS: The global correlation (GCOR) of the right anterior fusiform gyrus (FG) was decreased in depression patients. Attention-related areas were concentrated in the right posterior FG; the anterior and posterior functional connectivity (FC) of the FG was decreased in depression patients. Graph theoretic analysis showed that the degree of the right anterior FG was decreased, the degree of the anterior insula was increased, and the negative connection between these two regions was strengthened in depression patients. In addition, the degree of the right anterior FG, the FC between the subregions of the right FG, and the FC between the right anterior FG and insula were correlated with VVIQ scores; however, this correlation was not significant in depression patients. The meta-analysis suggested that the changes in the anterior FG in depressed patients may stem from difficulties of semantic memory retrieval. CONCLUSION: The changed intrinsic activity of subregions of the FG relative to the semantic memory retrieval may be associated with visual mental imagery impairments in depression.

RESUMEN

Perceived stress is an acknowledged risk factor for subthreshold depression (StD), and fluctuations in perceived stress are thought to disrupt the harmony of brain networks essential for emotional and cognitive functioning. This study aimed to elucidate the relationship between eye-open (EO) and eye-closed (EC) states, perceived stress, and StD. We recruited 27 individuals with StD and 33 healthy controls, collecting resting state fMRI data under both EC and EO conditions. We combined intrinsic connectivity and seed-based functional connectivity analyses to construct the functional network and explore differences between EC and EO conditions. Graph theory analysis revealed weakened connectivity strength in the right superior frontal gyrus (SFG) and right median cingulate and paracingulate gyrus (MCC) among participants with StD, suggesting an important role for these regions in the stress-related emotions dysregulation. Notably, altered SFG connectivity was observed to significantly relate to perceived stress levels in StD, and the SFG connection emerges as a neural mediator potentially influencing the relationship between perceived stress and StD. These findings highlight the role of SFG and MCC in perceived stress and suggest that understanding EC and EO states in relation to these regions is important in the neurobiological framework of StD. This may offer valuable perspectives for early prevention and intervention strategies in mental health disorders.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: To observe the effect of acupuncture and moxibustion on arterial elasticity in patients with early carotid atherosclerosis. METHODS: A total of 62 patients with early carotid atherosclerosis were randomly divided into a blank group (12 cases, 1 cases dropped-off), a sham-acupuncture group (25 cases, 5 cases dropped-off) and an acupuncture group (25 cases, 3 cases dropped-off). Patients in the acupuncture group received acupuncture treatment, including ①acupuncture:Baihui (GV20), Yintang (GV24+), Renying (ST9), Neiguan (PC6), Yanglingquan (GB34);②moxibustion:Yinqiguiyuan (Zhongwan [CV12], Xiawan [CV10], Qihai [CV6], Guanyuan [CV4]), Sihua (Geshu [BL17], Danshu [BL19]);③Intradermal needle:Xinshu (BL15), Danshu (BL19). Patients in the sham acupuncture group received placebo acupuncture, moxibustion, an intradermal needle, and the acupoints were the same as the acupuncture group. The above treatments were performed twice a week for 12 weeks. No intervention was given to the patients in the blank group. Diet and lifestyle education was given to the three groups. The ultrafast pulse wave velocity, including beginning-systolic pulse wave velocity (BS) and end-systolic pulse wave velocity (ES), was observed before treatment and 1, 2, 3 months after treatment in the three groups. The blood lipid level and platelet count (PLT) at each time point were observed. The safety of the treatments was also evaluated. RESULTS: Compared with those before treatment, the BS and ES values of both sides in the acupuncture group decreased at 2 and 3 months after treatment (P<0.05). Compared with the blank group, the bilateral ES of the acupuncture group were decreased at 2 months after treatment (P<0.05), and the bilateral BS and ES were decreased at 3 months (P<0.05). Compared with the sham-acupuncture group, the acupuncture group showed a decrease in left BS and left ES after 3 months of treatment (P<0.05), and the overall decrease on the left side of the acupuncture group was better than that on the right side. There were no significant differences between three groups in the levels of blood lipid and PLT at each time point. No serious adverse safety events occurred in the three groups during the treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Acupuncture and moxibustion therapy can improve arterial elasticity in patients with early carotid atherosclerosis, and it is safe and effective.

RESUMEN

Importance: Post-stroke sialorrhea (PSS) refers to excessive saliva flowing out the lip border after a stroke. PSS negatively affects patient self-image and social communication and may lead to depression. Limited evidence supports the link between excessive salivation and PSS. No large-scale, strictly controlled randomized controlled trials have shown the effectiveness of acupuncture in treating PSS patients. Objective: We aim to compare the effects of intraoral and sham acupuncture in PSS patients and explore relationships among salivation and drooling severity and frequency and swallowing function in stroke patients. Design: Clinical study protocol, SPIRIT compliant. Setting: Prospective, single-center, randomized, and sham-controlled trial. Population: We will recruit 106 PSS patients to receive 4-week intraoral or sham acupuncture. Additionally, 53 stroke patients without PSS will undergo a conventional 4-week treatment program to compare salivation between PSS and non-PSS patients. Exposures: Intraoral or sham acupuncture. Main Outcomes and Measures: The main evaluation index will be the 3-minute saliva weight (3MSW), comparing changes in 3MSW from baseline to weeks 4 and 8. Secondary assessment indices will include the "Drooling Severity and Frequency Scale" and "Functional Oral Intake Scale." Results: The results from this study will be published in peer-reviewed journals. Conclusion: Comparing effects of intraoral and sham acupuncture in PSS patients, this study may contribute important evidence for future PSS treatment and provide valuable insights into whether salivation issues in stroke patients are attributed to heightened salivary secretion or dysphagia.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of electroacupuncture (EA) on the morphology and microstructure of spinal cord tissue, the expression of serum exosomes, and the pro-inflammatory factors interleukin (IL)-1ß and IL-6 in spinal cord of rats with spinal cord injury (SCI), so as to explore the underlying mechanism of EA in the treatment of SCI. METHODS: Twenty-four female Wistar rats were randomly divided into sham operation group, model group, EA group, EA+GW4869 group, with 6 rats in each group. The SCI model was established by impinging spinal cord at T10 with a hammer, while the vertebral lamina was only opened without impingement for rats in sham operation group. Rats in EA group received EA intervention at "Jiaji"(EX-B7) acupoints at bilateral T9 and T10 (0.4-0.6 mA, 100 Hz), 3 h after modeling, once a day, for 7 concecutive days. Besides the treatment as EA group, rats in the EA+GW4869 group received injection of exosome inhibitor GW4869(200 µL, 300 µg/mL) once every 2 days from the day before modeling. Motor function of hind limbs of rats was evaluated using BBB scores. The histopathological changes of spinal cord were observed under light mircoscope after H.E. staining. Microstructure of spinal cord was observed and extracted serum exosomes were identified by using transmission electron microscopy. The expression of exosome marker proteins in serum exosomes, the levels of IL-1ß and IL-6 in spinal cord were detected by Western blot. RESULTS: H.E. stanining showed severe tissue looseness, inflammatory cell infiltration, cellular hydropic degeneration in spinal cord of the model group, which were relatively milder in the EA and EA+GW4869 groups. Under transmission electron microscopy, there were nerve fiber disintegration, myelin sheath structure dispersion, axonal atrophy with submembrane edema and widened space, and mitochondrial swelling in spinal cord of rats in the model group, with the lesions in EA group milder than EA+GW4869 group, which were both moderate. Typical exosomes were detected by transmission electron microscope in the extracted serum of rats in each group after ultracentrifugation. Compared with the sham operation group, the motor function scores was significantly decreased (P<0.01), the expression of IL-6 and IL-1ß in the spinal cord was significantly increased (P<0.01), while the expression of serum exosome marker protein CD81 was slightly increased in rats of the model group. Compared with the model group, the motor function scores was significantly increased (P<0.01), the expression of IL-6 and IL-1ß in the spinal cord was significantly decreased (P<0.01) in rats of the EA and EA+GW4869 group, while the expression of serum CD81 protein was slightly increased in rats of the EA group. Compared with the EA+GW4869 group, the expression of IL-6 and IL-1ß in the spinal cord was significantly decreased (P<0.01), while the expression of serum CD81 protein was slightly increased in rats of the EA group. However, there was no significance in expression of CD81 between each group mentioned above. CONCLUSION: EA can promote the secretion of serum exosomes and inhibit the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-6 and IL-1ß, so as to improve the microenvironment of injured spinal cord and SCI.

RESUMEN

Professor FU Wen-bin, based on the concept of the "yang-oriented approach", identifies "yang deficiency with excess yin" as the underlying pathological mechanism of "five delays and five weaknesses" in children. He recommends a treatment model that included acupuncture, moxibustion, and rehabilitation, integrating various therapeutic methods of acupuncture, refined moxibustion, and auricular point sticking. Specific acupoints along the conception vessel, governor vessel, and bladder meridian, as well as related acupoints with tonifying effects on spleen and kidney, are selected to achieve the therapeutic goal of "promoting yang and nourishing yang simultaneously".

RESUMEN

The traditional life concept of "body-mind holism" in Chinese medicine has drawn a special attention with the development of modern psychosomatic medicine. The "body-mind holism" is valuable in the guidance for clinical acupuncture practice, but, it is only remained on the theoretical significance by the medical masters in the past dynasties. In the paper, based on the understanding of Huangdi Neijing (Yellow Emperor's Internal Classic), the similarities and differences are compared between the body-mind theory and psychosomatic medicine. In association with clinical observation, from three aspects, i.e. body-mind pathogenesis, acupoint detection and observing the mind, and body-mind treatment, the guidance of "body-mind holism" is explored for the clinical diagnosis and treatment of acupuncture and moxibustion; the referents of "body" and "mind" are clarified in views of disease, diagnosis and treatment; and the treatment strategies of acupuncture and moxibustion are discussed in the perspective of "body-mind holism".

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of Shugan Tiaoshen acupuncture (acupuncture for soothing the liver and regulating the mentality) combined with western medication on depression and sleep quality in the patients with depression-insomnia comorbidity due to COVID-19 quarantine, and investigate the potential mechanism from the perspective of cortical excitability. METHODS: Sixty patients with depression-insomnia comorbidity due to COVID-19 quarantine were randomly divided into an acupuncture group and a sham-acupuncture group, 30 cases in each one. The patients of both groups were treated with oral administration of sertraline hydrochloride tablets. In the acupuncture group, Shugan Tiaoshen acupuncture was supplemented. Body acupuncture was applied to Yintang (GV 24+), Baihui (GV 20), Hegu (LI 4), Zhaohai (KI 6), Qihai (CV 6), etc. The intradermal needling was used at Xin (CO15), Gan (CO12) and Shen (CO10). In the sham-acupuncture group, the sham-acupuncture was given at the same points as the acupuncture group. The compensatory treatment was provided at the end of follow-up for the patients in the sham-acupuncture group. In both groups, the treatment was given once every two days, 3 times a week, for consecutive 8 weeks. The self-rating depression scale (SDS) and insomnia severity index (ISI) scores were compared between the two groups before and after treatment and 1 month after the end of treatment (follow-up) separately. The cortical excitability indexes (resting motor threshold [rMT], motor evoked potential amplitude [MEP-A], cortical resting period [CSP]) and the level of serum 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) were measured before and after treatment in the two groups. RESULTS: After treatment and in follow-up, SDS and ISI scores were decreased in both groups compared with those before treatment (P<0.05), and the scores in the acupuncture group were lower than those in the sham-acupuncture group (P<0.05), and the decrease range in the acupuncture group after treatment was larger than that in the sham-acupuncture group (P<0.05). After treatment, rMT was reduced (P<0.05), while MEP-A and CSP were increased (P<0.05) in the acupuncture group compared with that before treatment. The levels of serum 5-HT in both groups were increased compared with those before treatment (P<0.05). The rMT in the acupuncture group was lower than that in the sham-acupuncture group, while MEP-A and CSP, as well as the level of serum 5-HT were higher in the acupuncture group in comparison with the sham-acupuncture group (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Shugan Tiaoshen acupuncture combined with western medication can relieve depression and improve sleep quality in the patients with depression-insomnia comorbidity due to COVID-19 quarantine, which is probably related to rectifying the imbalanced excitatory and inhibitory neuronal functions.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To observe the impacts of acupuncture on depressive mood and sleep quality in patients with comorbid mild-to-moderate depressive disorder and insomnia, and explore its effect mechanism. METHODS: A total of 60 patients with comorbid mild-to-moderate depressive disorder and insomnia were randomly divided into an observation group (30 cases, 1 case dropped off) and a control group (30 cases, 2 cases dropped off). In the observation group, acupuncture and low frequency repeated transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) were combined for the intervention. Acupuncture was applied to Baihui (GV 20), Yintang (GV 24+), Neiguan (PC 6) and Yanglingquan (GB 34), etc., the needles were retained for 30 min; and the intradermal needles were embedded at Xinshu (BL 15) and Danshu (BL 19) for 2 days. After acupuncture, the rTMS was delivered at the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (R-DLPFC), with 1 Hz and 80% of movement threshold, lasting 30 min in each treatment. In the control group, the sham-acupuncture was adopted, combined with low frequency rTMS. The acupoint selection and manipulation were the same as the observation group. In the two groups, acupuncture was given once every two days, 3 times weekly; while, rTMS was operated once daily, for consecutive 5 days a week. The duration of treatment consisted of 4 weeks. Hamilton depression scale-17 (HAMD-17) and Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) scores were observed before and after treatment, as well as 1 month after the treatment completion (follow-up period) separately. Besides, the levels of nerve growth factor (BDNF) and γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the serum were detected before and after treatment in the two groups. RESULTS: After treatment and in follow-up, the HAMD-17 scores were lower than those before treatment in the two groups (P<0.05), and the scores in the observation group were lower than the control group (P<0.05). After treatment, the total scores and the scores of each factor of PSQI were reduced in the two groups in comparison with those before treatment except for the score of sleep efficiency in the control group (P<0.05); the total PSQI score and the scores for sleep quality, sleep latency, sleep efficiency and daytime dysfunction in the observation group were all lower than those in the control group (P<0.05). In the follow-up, except for the scores of sleep duration and sleep efficiency in the control group, the total PSQI score and the scores of all the other factors were reduced compared with those before treatment in the two groups (P<0.05); the total PSQI score and the scores of sleep quality, sleep latency, sleep duration, sleep efficiency and daytime dysfunction in the observation group were lower than the control group (P<0.05). After treatment, the levels of serum BDNF and GABA were increased in comparison with those before treatment in the observation group (P<0.05), and the level of serum BDNF was higher than that in the control group (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Acupuncture relieves depressive mood and improves sleep quality in patients with comorbid mild-to-moderate depressive disorder and insomnia. The effect mechanism may be related to the regulation of BDNF and GABA levels and the promotion of brain neurological function recovery.

RESUMEN

Adenylyl cyclase (AC)-cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP)-cAMP-dependent protein kinase A (PKA) cascade is considered to be associated with the pathogenesis and treatment of depression. The present study was conducted to explore the role of the cAMP cascade in antidepressant action of electroacupuncture (EA) treatment for chronic mild stress (CMS)-induced depression model rats. The results showed that EA improved significantly behavior symptoms in depression and dysfunction of AC-cAMP-PKA signal transduction pathway induced by CMS, which was as effective as fluoxetine. Moreover, the antidepressant effects of EA rather than Fluoxetine were completely abolished by H89, a specific PKA inhibitor. Consequently, EA has a significant antidepressant treatment in CMS-induced depression model rats, and AC-cAMP-PKA signal transduction pathway is crucial for it.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To systematically evaluate the curative effect of acupuncture on post-stroke depression (PSD). METHODS: The internet was used to retrieve the Wanfang Medical Data System, Chinese Periodical Net, the Weipu Information Resources System, PubMed and the Cochrane Library Database. Relevant articles, up to September 2010, were manually retrieved. These papers included studies that had performed random and semi-random control trials for the use of acupuncture to treat PSD. Fifteen random control tests involving 1096 patients were included in this study and individual cases, interventional measures and curative effects were extracted from this research. Grade methodological quality evaluation and meta-analysis were performed on these studies. RESULTS: Comparison between the acupuncture group and the Western medicine group for the curative rate on PSD revealed an OR of 1.48, 95% CI = [1.11 1.97] and P = 0.008. Comparison of obviously effective rate shows that OR = 1.39, 95% CI = [1.08 1.80] and P = 0.01. Comparison of effective rate shows that OR = 0.83, 95% CI = [0.631.09] and P = 0.18. CONCLUSION: Comparison between the acupuncture group and Western medicine group in treating PSD revealed that there is a statistical difference in curative rate and remarkably effective rate, but no difference in effective rate.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of electroacupuncture (EA) on the expression of related proteins in the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)/mammalian target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) signaling pathway and synapse-associated proteins and the density of dendrite spines in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) of depression model rats, and to reveal the underlying mechanism by which EA regulates the synaptic plasticity to improve depressive symptoms. METHODS: Thirty-six healthy male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were randomly divided into normal group, model group, EA group, and scopolamine (SCOP) group, with 9 in each group. The depression model was established by exposing rats to chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) combined with isolated feeding. Rats in the EA group were treated with EA (2 Hz/100 Hz, 1-1.2 mA) at "Baihui" (GV20), "Yintang" (EX-HN3), "Hegu" (LI4), and "Taichong" (LR3), 20 min each time, once per day, for 14 d, while those in the SCOP group treated with intraperitoneal injection of 25 µg/kg SCOP, once every 16 h, for 14 d. The sucrose preference and feeding latency of rats in each group were observed in the sucrose preference test (SPT) and novelty-suppressed feeding test. The expression levels of proteins in the BDNF/mTORC1 signaling pathway and synapse-associated proteins PSD95, Synapsin Ⅰ, and GluR1 were assayed by Western blot. Golgi-Cox staining was conducted for exploring the total density of dendritic spines on the apical dendrites of layer Ⅴ pyramidal neurons in PFC as well as the densities of mature, immature, and filopodial-like dendritic spines. RESULTS: Compared with the normal group, the model group exhibited significantly decreased sucrose preference (P<0.001), prolonged feeding latency (P<0.001), down-regulated BDNF, mTORC1, phosphorylated mTORC1 (p-mTORC1), PSD95, Synapsin Ⅰ, and GluR1 expression (P<0.001,P<0.01), and diminished total, mature, and immature spine dendritic densities (P<0.001). Compared with the model group, both EA and SCOP remarkably increased the sucrose preference (P<0.001), shortened the feeding latency (P<0.001), up-regulated the BDNF, mTORC1, p-mTORC1, PSD95, Synapsin Ⅰ, and GluR1 expression in PFC(P<0.05,P<0.01,P<0.001), and elevated the total and immature spine dendritic densities (P<0.001,P<0.01). The density of filopodial-like dendritic spine in the EA group was obviously enhanced (P<0.01), whereas the mature dendritic spine density in the SCOP group rose sharply (P<0.001). However, there were no significant differences between the EA group and SCOP group (P>0.05). CONCLUSION: EA alleviates the depressive symptoms of CUMS model rats possibly by up-regulating the expression of proteins in the BDNF/mTORC1 signaling pathway and synapse-asso-ciated proteins PSD95, Synapsin Ⅰ, and GluR1, increasing the dendritic spine density, and enhancing the synaptic plasticity in PFC.

RESUMEN

Hemifacial spasm (HFS) and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain are common facial diseases which cause depression, anxiety, insomnia, and poor quality of life. However, currently there are still no effective therapies to treat HFS and TMJ. Electroacupuncture (EA) has advantages of safety, rapid work, easy operation and convenience. Here, we reported a case of a 50-year-old woman who presented with irregular spasm of eyelids and facial muscles on the left side, and TMJ pain on the right side. The patient had been treated with carbamazepine (20mg per day) and alternative therapies for a year, but still not much improvement in the symptoms. The scores of the Jankovic Rating Scale (JRS), global rating scale (GRS), and visual analog scale (VAS) were 7, 60, and 7 points, respectively. The EMG test showed that the spastic side had higher R1 amplitude, longer R2 duration, and larger R2 area than the non-spasmodic side, and the occurrence rate of the lateral spread responses (LSR) in the Orbicularis oris and the Orbicularis oculi muscle was 60% and 40%, respectively. We considered this patient had left HFS and right TMJ pain. EA was successfully undertaken for two periods over 30 weeks. After EA, JRS and VAS were reduced sharply, and the symptoms of HFS were stable without recurrence. However, the frequency of the lower eyelid increased gradually during the 6-month follow-up. These findings reveal that EA with the frequency of 2 Hz and intensity of ~ 1-2 mA may be a benefit for alleviating symptoms of HFS and TMJ pain without adverse reaction. The potential mechanisms of EA in HFS and TMJ pain co-morbidity involve brain stem mechanism and DNIC mechanism for distal acupuncture and segmental mechanism for local acupuncture analgesia.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To compare the curative effect of refined moxibustion, traditional moxa box moxibustion and Chinese patent medicine on the sequelae of pelvic inflammatory disease with qi stagnation and blood stasis. METHODS: A total of 150 patients with sequelae of pelvic inflammatory disease with qi stagnation and blood stasis were randomized into a refined moxibustion group (50 cases), a box-moxibustion group (50 cases) and a Chinese medication group (50 cases, 2 cases dropped off). The patients in the refined moxibustion group were treated with refined moxibustion at Qihai (CV 6), Guanyuan (CV 4), Zigong (EX-CA 1) and Shuidao (ST 28), 2 moxa-cones for each acupoint. The patients in the box-moxibustion group were treated with box-moxibustion on the lower abdomen and Shenque (CV 8), and the patients in the Chinese medication group were treated with penyanqing capsules orally. All groups started treatment after menstruation, moxibustion was applied once every 4 days, twice a week, and medication was taken 3 times a day for a total of 2 menstrual cycles. The TCM symptoms and body signs scores of each group were observed before and after treatment. The short form health survey (SF-36) scores of each group were observed before and after treatment and during follow-up 12 weeks after treatment. RESULTS: After treatment, the TCM symptoms, body signs and comprehensive scores of each group were lower than those before treatment (P<0.05), and those in the refined moxibustion group were lower than the box-moxibustion group and the Chinese medication group (P<0.05). The SF-36 scores of each group after treatment and during follow-up were higher than before treatment (P<0.05); during follow-up, the SF-36 scores of the box-moxibustion group and the Chinese medication group were lower than after treatment (P<0.05), while that in the refined moxibustion group was higher than after treatment (P<0.05); the SF-36 scores after treatment and during follow-up in the refined moxibustion group were higher than the box-moxibustion group and the Chinese medication group (P<0.05, P<0.01). CONCLUSION: Compared with traditional moxa box moxibustion and Chinese patent medicine treatment, refined moxibustion can better improve the symptoms, body signs and quality of life in patients with the sequelae of pelvic inflammatory disease of qi stagnation and blood stasis, and the effect is longer.

RESUMEN

The paper summarizes the ideas and characteristics of acupoint selection in treatment of mental disorder with acupuncture and moxibustion by professor FU Wen-bin. Professor FU believes that mental disorder is manifested as the simultaneous illness of "heart" and "body". On the base of "holism" for the unity of body and mind, professor FU proposes the treating idea as "soothing the liver, regulating the mind and focusing on the heart and the gallbladder in treatment". In clinical practice, the acupoint prescription on specifically regulating and harmonizing yin and yang is composed to calm down the mind. The eight confluent points and back-shu points of five zang organs are selected to regulate zangfu functions. The "ghost" points, the points on the second line of bladder meridian and the acupoints with specific effect are used to tranquilize the mind, open the orifices and consolidate therapeutic effect. Meanwhile, the complicated symptoms are also considered in treatment. The integrative and holistic pattern of acupuncture and moxibustion therapy as "acupuncture at the top priority, followed by moxibustion, and consolidation at the end" achieves the co-regulation of qi and blood and tranquilization for both the mental and the physical.
