RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to investigate the utility of standardized uptake value (SUV) derived from bone single photon emission tomography/computed tomography (SPECT/CT) for diagnosing bone metastasis. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: One hundred forty-seven patients with malignant cancer (breast or prostate cancer), joint disorders, primary skeletal disease, or cartilaginous bone neoplasms who underwent skeletal quantitative SPECT/CT were retrospectively investigated. Acquired data were classified as normal fourth lumbar vertebra, skeletal degenerative changes, or bone metastasis. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to determine the optimum cut-off value for SUVmax to distinguish among these diagnoses. RESULTS: Mean SUVmax values for the normal L4 bone (n=101), skeletal degenerative changes (n=47) and bone metastasis (n=64) groups were 4.47±1.66 (range 1.01-11.25), 6.99±2.58 (2.21-14.6), and 25.4±15.7 (3.88-98.87), respectively. Compared to the other two groups, SUVmax for the bone metastasis group was significantly higher (P<0.001). In the normal bone group, sensitivity, specificity and accuracy for discriminating bone metastasis were 96.3%, 95.1%, and 95.7% respectively, with a best SUVmax cut-off value of 7.40. For the skeletal degenerative changes group sensitivity, specificity and accuracy were 87.5%, 93.6%, and 90.4% respectively, with a best SUVmax cut-off value of 11.26. CONCLUSION: Quantitative bone SPECT/CT may be useful for bone metastasis diagnosis.

Muscle aging such as sarcopenia adversely affects motor activities. However, few studies have elucidated the aging physiological mechanism of tongue concerted with the changes muscle composition. The present study aimed to examine the tongue composition changes to detect the effect of tongue fat mass on tongue pressure and swallowing function with aging. Twenty community-dwelling elderly without head and neck cancer, stroke, or neuromuscular disease and 20 healthy young were included. Tongue volume, tongue fat mass, tongue lean muscle mass, and tongue fat percentage were evaluated with 3D magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and Dixon MRI. Tongue pressure was also measured. Swallowing function among elderly individuals was assessed via videofluorography, which was evaluated using the penetration-aspiration scale (PAS) and normalized residue ratio scale (NRRS). Tongue fat mass and tongue fat percentage significantly increased with aging. The tongue fat percentage of elderly participants was 20%, which was two times greater than that of young participants. No significant difference was observed in tongue volume and tongue lean muscle mass. A significantly negative correlation was observed between tongue fat mass and tongue fat percentage as well as tongue pressure. Conversely, tongue volume was not significantly correlated with tongue pressure. Tongue muscle composition exhibited no effect in the PAS and NRRS. Increase of fat mass is a major change in tongue composition with aging, which is associated with low tongue pressure. Thus, attention must be paid not only to tongue quantity but also to the quality of tongue muscles.

RESUMEN

The purpose of this study is to compare the detectability of diseases the new image processing and the conventional image processing by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis and to show the usefulness of the new image processing. Radiographs with and without nodular cancer models in the chest phantom were used for observation samples. Totally 200 radiographs were evaluated by 10 radiological technologists (each readers had over 20 years or under 4 years of experience). The mean area under the curve (AUC) calculated from the over 20 years group was 0.754 for the new processing and 0.771 for the conventional processing (p value=0.651, 95% confidence interval=-0.084/0.049 (lower bound/upper bound)). On the other hand, the average AUC calculated from under 4 years group was 0.819 for the new processing and 0.678 for the conventional processing (p value= 0.041, 95% confidence interval=0.019/0.262 (lower bound/upper bound)). New image processing provides high detectability in less than 4 years group compared to conventional processing.
