RESUMEN

We aimed to investigate the potential associations between exposure to fuel types for cooking and birth outcomes in Northern Region of Ghana. Third trimester pregnant women were recruited during antenatal visit to the hospital and followed-up till delivery. Three questionnaires were administered covering baseline information, exposure to fuel types, and birth outcomes. Adjusting for potential confounding factors, log binomial regression model was applied to investigate the association between low birth weights (LBW), preterm birth and perinatal deaths in mothers and fuel types. Of the 1626 participants recruited at baseline, about 1323 women in the delivery period completed the study. At delivery period, maternal mean (SD) age was 27.3 (5.2) years. Mothers who used charcoal and firewood for cooking had 1.47 times (95% CI 1.04-2.05) and 1.18 times (95% CI 0.83-1.69) increased in risk of preterm birth respectively after controlling for potential confounding variables. Although, non-significant, mothers who used charcoal had 1.34 times (95% CI 0.45-3.97) increased risk in LBW, while those who used firewood had 1.23 times (95% CI 0.41-3.71) risk in LBW. Similarly, babies of mothers who used charcoal and those who used firewood respectively had 1.72 times (95% CI 0.52-5.65) and 1.70 times (95% CI 0.49-5.92) risk in small for gestational age after controlling for maternal BMI at first visit and anemia. Lastly, mothers who used charcoal and those who used firewood respectively had 1.87 times (95% CI 0.29-11.64) and 2.02 times (95% CI 0.31-13.04) increased risk in perinatal mortality after controlling for potential confounding variables. We observed a significant association between charcoal and preterm birth. Also, we observed a non-significant association between charcoal and firewood users and LBW, SGA and perinatal mortality respectively, compared to those using gas or electricity. This suggests cooking with charcoal and firewood could have health consequences on the outcome of pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Due to significant achievements in reducing mortality and increasing life expectancy, the issue of disability from diseases and injuries, and their related interventions, has become one of the most important concerns of health-related research. METHODS: Using data obtained from the GBD 2015 study, the present report provides prevalence and years lived with disability (YLDs) of 310 diseases and injuries by sex and age in Iran and neighboring countries over the period 1990-2015. Age-standardized rates of all causes of YLDs are presented for both males and females in 16 countries for 1990 and 2015. We present the percentage of total YLDs for 21 categories of diseases and injuries, the percentage of YLDs for age groups, as well as the ranking of the most prevalent causes and YLDs from the top 50 diseases and injuries in Iran. RESULTS: In 2015, the burden of 310 diseases and injuries among the Iranian population was responsible for 8,357,878 loss of all-age total years, which is equal to 10.58% of total years lived per year. This differs from the neighboring countries, as it ranges from 9.05% in Turkmenistan to 13.36% in Russia. During the past 25 years, a remarkable decrease was observed in all-cause YLD rates in all 16 countries. Meanwhile, in all countries, the age-standardized rate of all causes of YLDs was higher in females than males. CONCLUSION: Based on our findings, one of the remarkable changes in NCDs observed among the studied age groups was increased rate of YLDs from mental disorders, which was replaced by musculoskeletal disorders in older age groups in 2015.

The present study aimed to find a correlation between the self-reported smoking status of the residents of Tehran, Iran, and the urine cotinine as a biomarker of exposure to tobacco smoke. The self-reported data was collected from 222 participants who were living in the urban area of Tehran. The urine samples of participants were collected for cotinine analysis. Urine cotinine was measured by an enzymatic immunoassay technique. Tobacco smoking was reported by 76 (34.23 %) participants as the self-reported data, and the number of males in this report was higher than of females (p < 0.001). By adding the number of the self-reported non-smokers with cotinine levels above the cutoff value of >100 ng/ml to self-reported smokers, the smoking prevalence increased from 34.23 % (95 % CI 28.01-40.88 %) to 36.48 % (95 % CI 30.14-43.19 %). Using the cutoff value, sensitivity and specificity of the self-reported smoking status were respectively 90.12 % (95 % CI 81.46-95.64 %) and 98 % (95 % CI 93.91-99.55 %). The levels of agreement between self-reported tobacco smoking and urinary cotinine concentrations was 95.1 % (k = 0.89, p < 0.001, 95 % CI = 0.81-0.95). Based on the results, self-reported smoking can be a valid marker for assessing the tobacco exposure, and it can be of use in large epidemiological studies.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Tropospheric ozone is a problem with multi aspects - hazard to human health, plant, and welfare and a key factor to climate change, air pollution and atmosphere chemistry, as well. Behavior of ozone and nitrogen oxides (NO, and NO2) concentration is highly complex and variable; therefore, their trends as short and long-term were significantly attended. Most of the studies were carried out on the behavior of pollutant concentrations in North America, Europe, and East Asia, but few studies have been conducted in west Asia. The aim of this study was to assess daily changes and long-term trend of ozone and nitrogen oxides concentrations in Tehran city, Iran from March 2002 to September 2011. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Data were collected from 18 air quality monitoring stations. The data were sorted as daily mean of 10 years (daily changes) and annual mean for each year (long-term trend). One-sample test was used to assess the statistical significance. RESULTS: Current findings indicated that changes of ozone, NO, and NO2 concentrations are dependent from job shifts and photochemical reactions. Annual mean concentrations of ozone and NO2 were gradually increased, long-term trend of ozone and NO2 concentration indicated. The correlation between long term trend of ozone and NO2 was significant (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The controlling program was the most important factor in long-term concentration of ozone, and nitrogen oxides, but some problems and difficulties were accounted to perform controlling program.
