RESUMEN

Mountain ranges contain high concentrations of endemic species and are indispensable refugia for lowland species that are facing anthropogenic climate change1,2. Forecasting biodiversity redistribution hinges on assessing whether species can track shifting isotherms as the climate warms3,4. However, a global analysis of the velocities of isotherm shifts along elevation gradients is hindered by the scarcity of weather stations in mountainous regions5. Here we address this issue by mapping the lapse rate of temperature (LRT) across mountain regions globally, both by using satellite data (SLRT) and by using the laws of thermodynamics to account for water vapour6 (that is, the moist adiabatic lapse rate (MALRT)). By dividing the rate of surface warming from 1971 to 2020 by either the SLRT or the MALRT, we provide maps of vertical isotherm shift velocities. We identify 17 mountain regions with exceptionally high vertical isotherm shift velocities (greater than 11.67 m per year for the SLRT; greater than 8.25 m per year for the MALRT), predominantly in dry areas but also in wet regions with shallow lapse rates; for example, northern Sumatra, the Brazilian highlands and southern Africa. By linking these velocities to the velocities of species range shifts, we report instances of close tracking in mountains with lower climate velocities. However, many species lag behind, suggesting that range shift dynamics would persist even if we managed to curb climate-change trajectories. Our findings are key for devising global conservation strategies, particularly in the 17 high-velocity mountain regions that we have identified.

Replication stress converts the stalled forks into reversed forks, which is an important protection mechanism to prevent fork degradation and collapse into poisonous DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs). Paradoxically, the mechanism also acts in cancer cells to contribute to chemoresistance against various DNA-damaging agents. PARP1 binds to and is activated by stalled forks to facilitate fork reversal. Aprataxin and polynucleotide kinase/phosphatase-like factor (APLF) binds to PARP1 through the poly(ADP-ribose) zinc finger (PBZ) domain and is known to be involved in non-homologous end joining (NHEJ). Here, we identify a novel function of APLF involved in interstrand DNA crosslink (ICL) repair and fork protection. We demonstrate that PARP1 activity facilitates the APLF recruitment to stalled forks, enabling the FANCD2 recruitment to stalled forks. The depletion of APLF sensitizes cells to cisplatin, impairs ICL repair, reduces the FANCD2 recruitment to stalled forks, and results in nascent DNA degradation by MRE11 nucleases. Additionally, cisplatin-resistant cancer cells show high levels of APLF and homologous recombination-related gene expression. The depletion of APLF sensitizes cells to cisplatin and results in fork instability. Our results reveal the novel function of APLF to facilitate ICL repair and fork protection, thereby contributing to cisplatin-resistant phenotypes of cancer cells.

To evaluate the change of total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and ascorbic acid (AA) between femtosecond laser in situ keratomileusis (FS-LASIK) and laser-assisted lenticule extraction (LALEX). A prospective non-randomized study was conducted, and 33 and 75 eyes that had undergone FS-LASIK or LALEX surgeries were enrolled, respectively. The tear films near corneal incisions were collected, and the concentrations of TAC and AA were determined. The generalized linear mixed model was adopted to calculate the adjusted odds ratio (aOR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) of TAC and AA between the two groups. The AA reduction was significant 1 month after the LALEX and FS-LASIK procedures (both p < 0.05), and the decrement in AA level was significantly larger in the FS-LASIK group compared to the LALEX group (p = 0.0002). In the subgroup analysis, the LALEX group demonstrated a lower decrement in TAC level in the individuals with dry eye disease (DED) than the FS-LASIK group (p = 0.0424), and the LALEX group demonstrated a significantly lower AA decrement in the participants with high myopia (p = 0.0165) and DED (p = 0.0043). The LALEX surgery causes lesser AA decrement compared to FS-LASIK surgery especially for the patients with DED.

An increased neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is a poor prognostic biomarker in various types of cancer, because it reflects the inhibition of lymphocytes in the circulation and tumors. In urologic cancers, upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) is known for its aggressive features and lack of T cell infiltration; however, the association between neutrophils and suppressed T lymphocytes in UTUC is largely unknown. In this study, we examined the relationship between UTUC-derived factors and tumor-associated neutrophils or T lymphocytes. The culture supernatant from UTUC tumor tissue modulated neutrophils to inhibit T cell proliferation. Among the dominant factors secreted by UTUC tumor tissue, apolipoprotein A1 (Apo-A1) exhibited a positive correlation with NLR. Moreover, tumor-infiltrating neutrophils were inversely correlated with tumor-infiltrating T cells. Elevated Apo-A1 levels in UTUC were also inversely associated with the population of tumor-infiltrating T cells. Our findings indicate that elevated Apo-A1 expression in UTUC correlates with tumor-associated neutrophils and T cells. This suggests a potential immunomodulatory effect on neutrophils and T cells within the tumor microenvironment, which may represent therapeutic targets for UTUC treatment.

Phosphoglucose isomerase (PGI) catalyzes the interconversion of fructose-6-phosphate and glucose-6-phosphate, which impacts cell carbon metabolic flow. Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) contains two nuclear PGI genes respectively encoding plastidial PGI1 and cytosolic PGI (cPGI). The loss of PGI1 impairs the conversion of F6P of the Calvin-Benson cycle to G6P for the synthesis of transitory starch in leaf chloroplasts. Since cpgi knockout mutants have not yet been obtained, they are thought to be lethal. The cpgi lethality can be rescued by expressing CaMV 35S promoter (p35S)-driven cPGI; however, the complemented line is completely sterile due to pollen degeneration. Here, we generated a cpgi mutant expressing p35S::cPGI-YFP in which YFP fluorescence in developing anthers was undetectable specifically in the tapetum and in pollen, which could be associated with male sterility. We also generated RNAi-cPGI knockdown lines with strong cPGI repression in floral buds that exhibited reduced male fertility due to the degeneration of most pollen. Histological analyses indicated that the synthesis of intersporal callose walls was impaired, causing microsporocytes to fail to separate haploid daughter nuclei to form tetrads, which might be responsible for subsequent pollen degeneration. We successfully isolated cpgi knockout mutants in the progeny of a heterozygous cpgi mutant floral-dipped with sugar solutions. The rescued cpgi mutants exhibited diminished young vegetative growth, reduced female fertility, and impaired intersporal callose wall formation in a meiocyte, and, thus, male sterility. Collectively, our data suggest that cPGI plays a vital role in carbohydrate partitioning, which is indispensable for microsporogenesis and early embryogenesis.

BACKGROUND: The available evidence presented inconsistencies and inconclusive findings regarding the associations between co-existing asthma and mortality among COVID-19 patients. The objective of the current study is to investigate the relationship between asthma and severe outcomes after SARS-CoV-2 Omicron infection in an infection-naïve population. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study using propensity score matching was conducted. The COVID-19 patients requiring hospitalisation in Hong Kong from January 1, 2022, to November 13, 2022, an Omicron-predominated period, were identified. Severe clinical outcomes were defined as ICU admission and inpatient death after the first positive PCR results as well as a composite outcome of both. RESULTS: Of the 74,396 hospitalised COVID-19 patients admitted, 1,290 asthma patients and 18,641 non-asthma patients were included in the matched cohort. The rates of death and the composite outcome were 15·3% and 17·2%, respectively, among the non-asthma patients,12·2% and 13·6%, respectively, among the asthma patients, with adjusted hazard ratios equal to 0·775 (95% CI: 0·660-0·909) and 0·770 (95% CI: 0·662-0·895), respectively. The negative association was more apparent in the elderly and female groups. Asthma remained a factor that lowered the risk of disease severity even though the patients were not fully vaccinated with at least two doses. CONCLUSIONS: We used real-world data to demonstrate that asthma was not a risk factor for COVID-19 severity of the infections of Omicron variant, even though the patients were not fully vaccinated.

Cl- is a major anion in the bodily fluids of vertebrates, and maintaining its homeostasis is essential for normal physiological functions. Fishes inhabiting freshwater (FW) passively lose body fluid ions, including Cl-, to the external environment because of the electrochemical gradient of ions across the body surface. Therefore, FW fishes have to actively absorb Cl- from the surroundings to maintain ion homeostasis in their bodily fluids. Hormonal control is vital for modulating ion uptake in fish. Vitamin D is involved in the regulation of Ca2+ uptake and acid secretion in fish. In the present study, we found that the levels of bioactive vitamin D, 1α,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1α,25(OH)2D3), significantly increased in zebrafish embryos and adults after exposure to water containing low levels of Cl-. Moreover, the administration of 1α,25(OH)2D3 treatment (20 µg/L) in zebrafish embryos, and intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of 1α,25(OH)2D3 (5 µg/kg body mass) in zebrafish adults, resulting the increased Cl- content in bodily fluid in zebrafish. Na+-Cl- cotransporter 2b (NCC2b) and Cl- channel 2c (CLC2c) are specifically expressed during Cl- uptake by ionocytes in zebrafish. Our results indicated that the mRNA and protein expression of NCC2b and CLC2c considerably increased in the zebrafish with exogenous 1α,25(OH)2D3 treatment. Additionally, exogenous 1α,25(OH)2D3 administration increased the number of NCC2b- and CLC2c-expressing cells in yolk skins of zebrafish embryos and the gill filaments of zebrafish adults. Transcript signals of vitamin D receptors (VDRs) were identified in NCC2b-expressing cells. Knockdown of VDRa and VDRb significantly reduced the expression of NCC2b and CLC2c and the number of NCC2b- and CLC2c-expressing cells. These results indicate that vitamin D can affect Cl- uptake in zebrafish and extend our knowledge of the role of vitamin D in fish physiology.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of atrial fibrillation (AF) continues to increase in modern aging society. Patients with AF are at high risk for multiple adverse cardiovascular events, including heart failure, stroke, and mortality. Improved medical care is needed for patients with AF to enhance their quality of life and limit their medical resource utilization. With advances in the internet and technology, telehealth programs are now widely used in medical care. A fourth-generation telehealth program offers synchronous and continuous medical attention in response to physiological parameters measured at home. Although we have previously shown the benefits of this telehealth program for some patients with a high risk of cardiovascular disease, its benefits for patients with AF remains uncertain. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the benefits of participating in a fourth-generation telehealth program for patients with AF in relation to cardiovascular outcomes. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study. We retrospectively searched the medical records database of a tertiary medical center in Northern Taiwan between January 2007 and December 2017. We screened 5062 patients with cardiovascular disease and enrolled 537 patients with AF, of which 279 participated in the telehealth program and 258 did not. Bias was reduced using the inverse probability of treatment weighting adjustment based on the propensity score. Outcomes were collected and analyzed, including all-cause readmission, admission for heart failure, acute coronary syndrome, ischemic stroke, systemic embolism, bleeding events, all-cause mortality, and cardiovascular death within the follow-up period. Total medical expenses and medical costs in different departments were also compared. Subgroup analyses were conducted on ischemic stroke stratified by several subgroup variables. RESULTS: The mean follow-up period was 3.0 (SD 1.7) years for the telehealth group and 3.4 (SD 1.9) years for the control group. After inverse probability of treatment weighting adjustment, the patients in the telehealth program had significantly fewer ischemic strokes (2.0 vs 4.5 events per 100 person-years; subdistribution hazard ratio [SHR] 0.45, 95% CI 0.22-0.92) and cardiovascular deaths (2.5 vs 5.9 events per 100 person-years; SHR 0.43, 95% CI 0.18-0.99) at the follow-up. The telehealth program particularly benefited patients comorbid with vascular disease (SHR 0.11, 95% CI 0.02-0.53 vs SHR 1.16, 95% CI 0.44-3.09; P=.01 for interaction). The total medical expenses during follow-up were similar in the telehealth and control groups. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated the benefits of participating in the fourth-generation telehealth program for patients with AF by significantly reducing their ischemic stroke risk while spending the same amount on medical expenses.

The herb Sophora flavescens displays anti-inflammatory activity and can provide a source of antipsoriatic medications. We aimed to evaluate whether S. flavescens extracts and compounds can relieve psoriasiform inflammation. The ability of flavonoids (maackiain, sophoraflavanone G, leachianone A) and alkaloids (matrine, oxymatrine) isolated from S. flavescens to inhibit production of cytokine/chemokines was examined in keratinocytes and macrophages. Physicochemical properties and skin absorption were determined by in silico molecular modeling and the in vitro permeation test (IVPT) to establish the structure-permeation relationship (SPR). The ethyl acetate extract exhibited higher inhibition of interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8, and CXCL1 production in tumor necrosis factor-α-stimulated keratinocytes compared to the ethanol and water extracts. The flavonoids demonstrated higher cytokine/chemokine inhibition than alkaloids, with the prenylated flavanones (sophoraflavanone G, leachianone A) led to the highest suppression. Flavonoids exerted anti-inflammatory effects via the extracellular signal-regulated kinase, p38, activator protein-1, and nuclear factor-κB signaling pathways. In the IVPT, prenylation of the flavanone skeleton significantly promoted skin absorption from 0.01 to 0.22 nmol/mg (sophoraflavanone G vs. eriodictyol). Further methoxylation of a prenylated flavanone (leachianone A) elevated skin absorption to 2.65 nmol/mg. Topical leachianone A reduced the epidermal thickness in IMQ-treated mice by 47%, and inhibited cutaneous scaling and cytokine/chemokine overexpression at comparable levels to a commercial betamethasone product. Thus, prenylation and methoxylation of S. flavescens flavanones may enable the design of novel antipsoriatic agents.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the location and intensity of the corneal pigmented arc in orthokeratology (ortho-k)-treated children and its relationship with annual axial length (AL) change using Pentacam. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study enrolled children aged 9 to 15 years who had been followed up for at least one year after ortho-k treatment for myopia control. A Pentacam was used to determine the location and intensity of pigmented arc after lens wear. Annual AL changes were further used as the outcome measurement to determine their relationships with the location and intensity of pigmented arc using generalized estimating equations (GEE). RESULTS: In total, 62 eyes from 33 patients (mean age 10.9 years) were included in our final analysis. The mean follow-up time was 30.6 months. The mean annual AL changes were 0.10 mm. Age statistically correlated with annual AL change (GEE, P= 0.033). In addition, the annual AL change was negatively associated with the relative vertical distance of the lowest density of pigmented arc point based on the visual center, pupil center, and corneal thinnest point after adjustment with age ( P =0.005, P =0.004, and P< 0.001, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Pentacam could be a useful tool for evaluating the location and intensity of the corneal pigmented arc. In addition, there was a negative correlation between the vertical distance of the pigmented arc and annual AL change. These findings may provide important information regarding myopia control, next-generation ortho-k design, and prescription.

The aldosterone-to-renin ratio (ARR) is the standard screening test for primary aldosteronism (PA). Because of the poor reproducibility of the ARR, repeat testing is recommended if the result is not compatible with the clinical condition. Various methods to measure renin are used in different hospitals in Taiwan, and the ARR cutoff values also differ among laboratories. The Task Force of Taiwan PA recommend using plasma renin activity (PRA) to calculate ARR instead of direct renin concentration (DRC) unless PRA is unavailable, because PRA is widely used in international guidelines and most studies.

BACKGROUND: The exact knowledge of the local biological and immunological effects of vascularized lymph node transfer (VLNT) continues to be an emerging science but a positive control positive control over infectious and immune-mediated processes is often advocated. Knowing the characterization of the inflammatory infiltrate associated with lymphedema, the aim of this paper is to verify the hypothesis that VLNT is able to modulate the inflammatory and immune microenvironment of lymphedematous tissue by evaluating any modification of the local inflammatory cell infiltrate. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A prospectively database of patients who received VLN transfer for lower extremity lymphedema between January 2018 and December 2020 was reviewed. Nine patients diagnosed with extremities' stage II secondary lymphedema were included, with a mean age of 55.3 (range 39-66 years) years. Gastroepiploic lymph node transfer was performed in all patients and transferred heterotopically. Full thickness 6-mm skin punch biopsies were obtained from all voluntary lymph node transfer patients at identical sites of the lymphedematous limb during the surgical procedure of VLNT (T0) and 1 year later (T1). Immunohistochemistry was performed using antibodies against the following markers: anti-CD3; anti-CD4; anti-CD8; anti-CD68. Data at T0 were compared to those at T1. RESULTS: Post-operative course was uneventful in all cases experiencing a significant reduction (almost a third) in terms of cellulitis episodes: The median duration of follow-up for patients was 28.3 months (range 12-40). The analysis of the density of the inflammatory cells as a whole revealed a significant reduction at T1 compared to T0. Specifically, CD3 expression levels turned from 16.36 ± 3.421 (cells/mm2 ) pre-operatively to 7.6 ± 1.511 (cells/mm2 ) post-operatively (p < .0001). CD4+ cells turned from 7.270 ± 3.421 (cells/mm2 ) at T0 to 4.815 ± 1.511 cells/mm2 at T1 (p = .0173). CD8 expression values decreased from 4.360 ± 3.421 (cells/mm2 ) to 2.753 ± 1.451 (cell/mm2 ) at T1 (p = .0003). Monocyte/macrophage marker CD68 varied from 8.208 ± 2.314 (cells/mm2 ) at T0 to 7.600 ± 1876 (cells/mm2 ) at T1 (p = .0003). CONCLUSION: VLNT decreases skin and subcutaneous tissues' infiltration of inflammatory cells, providing one explanation for the positive control of lymph node transfer procedure over infectious and immune-mediated processes.

Microbes constitute the most prevalent life form on Earth, yet their remarkable diversity remains mostly unrecognized. Microbial diversity in vertebrate models presents a significant challenge for investigating host-microbiome interactions. The model organism Caenorhabditis elegans has many advantages for delineating the effects of host genetics on microbial composition. In the wild, the C. elegans gut contains various microbial species, while in the laboratory it is usually a host for a single bacterial species. There is a potential host-microbe interaction between microbial metabolites, drugs, and C. elegans phenotypes. This mini-review aims to summarize the current understanding regarding the microbiome in C. elegans. Examples using C. elegans to study host-microbe-metabolite interactions are discussed.

BACKGROUND: Speech restoration is important for communication and social activities after pharyngolaryngectomy in head and neck cancer or corrosive injury. Several techniques of voice restoration have been developed to improve life quality. The aim of this paper was to focus on the microsurgical transfer of ileocolon flap and outcome of further voice rehabilitation. PATIENTS AND METHODS: From 2010 to 2022, 69 patients had ileocolon flap at our hospital with postoperative speech training and regular follow-up for over 1 year. The patients received deglutition training first, followed by voice rehabilitation. Voice outcomes were evaluated at an interval of 3 months and finally at 12 months of voice training rehabilitation. Among other examinations, the speech function was evaluated using a 4-point Likert scale and senior surgeon (H-c.C.) scoring system. RESULTS: The results showed that speech function reached 13.1% of excellent voice, 65.1% of good voice, 13.1% of fair result, and 8.7% of poor result by Likert scales. Meanwhile, the senior surgeon (H-c.C.) score showed 17.4% of excellent, 63.8% of moderate, and 18.8% of poor results. About voice laboratory results, maximal phonation time was 11.0 seconds, and the average number counted in one breath was 15. Loudness and frequency showed 56.0 dB and 105.0 Hz, respectively. CONCLUSION: The study showed that after voice reconstruction with ileocolon flap followed by the voice rehabilitation program, the patients would have a better understanding of the altered anatomical structures and practice in a more efficient way. Adequate recommendation by the therapists to plastic surgeons for revision surgeries optimized voice function of the patients.

Pericytes are microvascular mural cells that directly contact endothelial cells. They have long been recognized for their roles in vascular development and homeostasis, but more recently have been identified as key mediators of the host response to injury. In this context, pericytes possess a surprising degree of cellular plasticity, behaving dynamically when activated and potentially participating in a range of divergent host responses to injury. Although there has been much interest in the role of pericytes in fibrosis and tissue repair, their involvement in the initial inflammatory process has been understudied and is increasingly appreciated. Pericytes mediate inflammation through leukocyte trafficking and cytokine signaling, respond to pathogen-associated molecular patterns and tissue damage-associated molecular patterns, and may drive vascular inflammation during human SARS-CoV-2 infection. In this review, we highlight the inflammatory phenotype of activated pericytes during organ injury, with an emphasis on novel findings relevant to pulmonary pathophysiology.

Nephronectin (NPNT) is a basement membrane (BM) protein and high-affinity ligand of integrin α8ß1 that is required for kidney morphogenesis in mice. In the lung, NPNT also localizes to BMs, but its potential role in pulmonary development has not been investigated. Mice with a floxed Npnt allele were used to generate global knockouts (KOs). Staged embryos were obtained by timed matings of heterozygotes and lungs were isolated for analysis. Although primary and secondary lung bud formation was normal in KO embryos, fusion of right lung lobes, primarily the medial and caudal, was first detected at E13.5 and persisted into adulthood. The lung parenchyma of KO mice was indistinguishable from wild-type (WT) and lobe fusion did not alter respiratory mechanics in adult KO mice. Interrogation of an existing single-cell RNA-seq atlas of embryonic and adult mouse lungs identified Npnt transcripts in mesothelial cells at E12.5 and into the early postnatal period, but not in adult lungs. KO embryonic lungs exhibited increased expression of laminin α5 and deposition of collagen IV in the mesothelial BM, accompanied by abnormalities in collagen fibrils in the adjacent stroma. Cranial and accessory lobes extracted from KO embryonic lungs fused ex vivo when cultured in juxtaposition, with the area of fusion showing loss of the mesothelial marker Wilms tumor 1. Because a similar pattern of lobe fusion was previously observed in integrin α8 KO embryos, our results suggest that NPNT signaling through integrin α8, likely in the visceral pleura, maintains right lung lobe separation during embryogenesis.

Paraneoplastic nephrotic syndrome (PNS) is a complication seen in cancer patients. Ultrastructural examination shows the accumulation of proteins and the presence of foot process (FP) effacement in the glomeruli of PNS patients. Previously, we reported that orthotopic xenografts of Lewis lung carcinoma 1 in C57BL/6 mice caused them to develop lung cancer with albuminuria. This implies that these mice can be used as a model of human disease and suggests that Lewis lung carcinoma 1 cell-secreted proteins (LCSePs) contain nephrotoxic molecules and cause inflammation in renal cells. As podocyte effacement was present in glomeruli in this model, such podocyte injury may be attributable to either soluble LCSeP or LCSeP deposits triggering pathological progression. LCSePs in conditioned media was concentrated for nephrotoxicity testing. Integrin-focal adhesion kinase (FAK) signaling and inflammatory responses were evaluated in podocytes either exposed to soluble LCSePs or seeded onto substrates with immobilized LCSePs. FAK phosphorylation and interleukin-6 expression were higher in podocytes attached to LCSePs substrates than in those exposed to soluble LCSePs. Notably, LCSeP-based haptotaxis gave rise to altered signaling in podocytes. When podocytes were stimulated by immobilized LCSePs, FAK accumulated at focal adhesions, synaptopodin dissociated from F-actin, and disrupting the interactions between synaptopodin and α-actinin was observed. When FAK was inhibited by PF-573228 in immobilized LCSePs, the association between synaptopodin and α-actinin was observed in the podocytes. The association of synaptopodin and α-actinin with F-actin allowed FP stretching, establishing a functional glomerular filtration barrier. Therefore, in this mouse model of lung cancer, FAK signaling prompts podocyte FP effacement and proteinuria, indicative of PNS.

BACKGROUND: Roots are essential for plant growth and have a variety of functions, such as anchoring the plant to the ground, absorbing water and nutrients from the soil, and sensing abiotic stresses, among others. OsERF106MZ is a salinity-induced gene that is expressed in germinating seeds and rice seedling roots. However, the roles of OsERF106MZ in root growth remain poorly understood. RESULTS: Histochemical staining to examine ß-glucuronidase (GUS) activity in transgenic rice seedlings harboring OsERF106MZp::GUS indicated that OsERF106MZ is mainly expressed in the root exodermis, sclerenchyma layer, and vascular system. OsERF106MZ overexpression in rice seedlings leads to an increase in primary root (PR) length. The phytohormone abscisic acid (ABA) is thought to act as a hidden architect of root system structure. The expression of the ABA biosynthetic gene OsAO3 is downregulated in OsERF106MZ-overexpressing roots under normal conditions, while the expression of OsNPC3, an AtNPC4 homolog involved in ABA sensitivity, is reduced in OsERF106MZ-overexpressing roots under both normal and NaCl-treated conditions. Under normal conditions, OsERF106MZ-overexpressing roots show a significantly reduced ABA level; moreover, exogenous application of 1.0 µM ABA can suppress OsERF106MZ-mediated root growth promotion. Additionally, OsERF106MZ-overexpressing roots display less sensitivity to ABA-mediated root growth inhibition when treated with 5.0 µM ABA under normal conditions or exposed to NaCl-treated conditions. Furthermore, chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP)-qPCR and luciferase (LUC) reporter assays showed that OsERF106MZ can bind directly to the sequence containing the GCC box in the promoter region of the OsAO3 gene and repress the expression of OsAO3. CONCLUSIONS: OsERF106MZ may play a role in maintaining root growth for resource uptake when rice seeds germinate under salinity stress by alleviating ABA-mediated root growth inhibition.

AIMS: To investigate whether metabolic syndrome (MetS) could predict renal outcome in patients with established chronic kidney disease (CKD). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We enroled 2500 patients with CKD stage 1-4 from the Integrated CKD care programme, Kaohsiung for delaying Dialysis (ICKD) prospective observational study. 66.9% and 49.2% patients had MetS and diabetes (DM), respectively. We accessed three clinical outcomes, including all-cause mortality, RRT, and 50% decline in estimated glomerular filtration rate events. RESULTS: The MetS score was positively associated with proteinuria, inflammation, and nutrition markers. In fully adjusted Cox regression, the hazard ratio (HR) (95% confidence interval) of MetS for composite renal outcome (renal replacement therapy, and 50% decline of renal function) in the DM and non-DM subgroups was 1.56 (1.15-2.12) and 1.31 (1.02-1.70), respectively, while that for all-cause mortality was 1.00 (0.71-1.40) and 1.27 (0.92-1.74). Blood pressure is the most important component of MetS for renal outcomes. In the 2 by 2 matrix, compared with the non-DM/non-MetS group, the DM/MetS group (HR: 1.62 (1.31-2.02)) and the non-DM/MetS group (HR: 1.33 (1.05-1.69)) had higher risks for composite renal outcome, whereas the DM/MetS group had higher risk for all-cause mortality (HR: 1.43 (1.09-1.88)). CONCLUSIONS: MetS could predict renal outcome in patients with CKD stage 1-4 independent of DM.

RESUMEN

A strategy that combines electrochemical synthesis and photoredox catalysis was reported for the efficient synthesis of imines. This approach was demonstrated to be highly versatile in producing various types of imines, including symmetric and unsymmetric imines, by exploring the impact of different substituents on the benzene ring of the arylamine. Additionally, the method was specifically applied to modify N-terminal phenylalanine residues and was found to be successful in the photoelectrochemical cross-coupling reaction between NH2 -Phe-OMe and aryl methylamines, leading to the synthesis of phenylalanine-containing imines. Therefore, this technique would present a convenient and efficient platform for synthesizing imines, with promising applications in chemical biology, drug development, and organic synthesis.
