RESUMEN

In fiber-based quantum information processing with energy-time entangled photon pairs, optimized dispersion compensation is vital to preserve the strong temporal correlation of the photon pairs. We propose and experimentally verify that, by simply tuning the wavelength of the entangled photon pairs, nonlocal dispersion cancellation (NDC) can provide a widely flexible and finely adjustable solution for optimizing the dispersion compensation, which cannot be reached with the traditional local dispersion cancellation (LDC) instead. By way of example, when a 50 km-long single-mode fiber (SMF) is dispersion compensated by a 6.2-km-long commercial dispersion compensating fiber (DCF) based on the LDC configuration, it will lead to an almost invariant over-compensation in the wavelength range of 1500-1600 nm which restricts the observed temporal coincidence width of the self-developed energy-time entangled photon-pairs source to a minimum of ∼110 ps. While in the NDC configuration, the dispersion compensation can be readily optimized by tuning the signal wavelength to 1565.7 nm and a minimum coincidence width of 86.1 ± 0.7 ps is observed, which is mainly limited by the jitter of the single-photon detection system. Furthermore, such optimized dispersion compensation can also be achieved as the fiber length varies from 48 km to 60 km demonstrating the wide flexibility of NDC. Thanks to these capabilities, elaborate dispersion compensation modules are no longer required, which makes NDC a more versatile tool in fiber-based quantum information and metrology applications.

BACKGROUND: Improvements of population health in China have been unevenly distributed among different sexes and regions. Mortality Registration System provides an opportunity for timely assessments of mortality trend and inequalities. METHODS: Causes of death were reclassified following the method of Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD). Age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR) and ring-map of the rate by town were used to describe inequalities in changing mortality. Life expectancy (LE) and cause-deleted LE were calculated on the basis of life table technique. RESULTS: The burden of death from 2002 to 2018 was dominated by cardiovascular diseases (CVD), neoplasms, chronic respiratory diseases and injuries in Jiading district, accounting for almost 80% of total deaths. The overall ASMR dropped from 407.6/100000 to 227.1/100000, and LE increased from 77.86 years to 82.31 years. Women lived about 3.0-3.5 years longer than men. Besides, a cluster of lower LE was found for CVD in the southeast corner and one cluster for neoplasms in the southern corner of the district. The largest individual contributor to increment in LE was neoplasms, ranged from 2.41 to 3.63 years for males, and from 1.60 to 2.36 years for females. CONCLUSIONS: Improvement in health was mainly attributed to the decline of deaths caused by CVD and neoplasms, but was distributed with sex and town. This study served as a reflection of health inequality, is conducive to formulate localized health policies and measures.

In this Letter, a hybrid frequency-time spectrograph combining a tunable optical filter and a dispersive element is presented for measurement of the spectral properties of the two-photon state. In comparison with the previous single-photon spectrograph utilizing the dispersive Fourier transformation (DFT) technique, this method is advanced since it avoids the need for additional wavelength calibration and the electronic laser trigger for coincidence measurement; therefore, its application is extended to continuous wave (CW) pumped two-photon sources. The achievable precision of the spectrum measurement has also been discussed in theory and demonstrated experimentally with a CW pumped periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) waveguide-based spontaneous parametric down-conversion photon source. Such a device is expected to be a versatile tool for the characterization of the frequency entangled two-photon state.

Monitoring, sensing, and exploration of over 70% of the Earth's surface that is covered with water is permitted through the deployment of underwater bioinspired robots without affecting the natural habitat. To create a soft robot actuated with soft polymeric actuators, this paper describes the development of a lightweight jellyfish-inspired swimming robot, which achieves a maximum vertical swimming speed of 7.3 mm/s (0.05 body length/s) and is characterized by a simple design. The robot, named Jelly-Z, utilizes a contraction-expansion mechanism for swimming similar to the motion of a Moon jellyfish. The objective of this paper is to understand the behavior of soft silicone structure actuated by novel self-coiled polymer muscles in an underwater environment by varying stimuli and investigate the associated vortex for swimming like a jellyfish. To better understand the characteristics of this motion, simplified Fluid-structure simulation, and particle image velocimetry (PIV) tests were conducted to study the wake structure from the robot's bell margin. The thrust generated by the robot was also characterized with a force sensor to ascertain the force and cost of transport (COT) at different input currents. Jelly-Z is the first robot that utilized twisted and coiled polymer fishing line (TCPFL) actuators for articulation of the bell and showed successful swimming operations. Here, a thorough investigation on swimming characteristics in an underwater setting is presented theoretically and experimentally. We found swimming metrics of the robot are comparable with other jellyfish-inspired robots that have utilized different actuation mechanisms, but the actuators used here are scalable and can be made in-house relatively easily, hence paving way for further advancements into the use of these actuators.

Drug combinations can increase the therapeutic effect by reducing the level of toxicity and the occurrence of drug resistance. Therefore, several drug combinations are often used in the management of complex diseases. However, due to the exponential growth in drug development, it would be impractical to evaluate all combinations through experiments. In view of this, we developed Pathway Interaction Network (PINet) biological model to estimate the optimal drug combinations for various diseases. The random walk with restart (RWR) algorithm was used to capture the "disease state" and "drug state," while PINet was used to evaluate the optimal drug combinations and the high-order drug combination. The model achieved a mean area under the curve of a receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.885. In addition, for some diseases, PINet predicted the optimal drug combination. For example, in the case of acute myeloid leukemia, PINet correctly predicted midostaurin and gemtuzumab as effective drug combinations, as demonstrated by the results of a Phase-I clinical trial. Moreover, PINet also correctly predicted the potential drug combinations for diseases that lacked a training dataset that could not be predicted using standard machine learning models.

With the rapid development of microwave photonics technology, high-speed processing and ultra-weak signal detection capability have become the main bottlenecks in many applications. Thanks to the ultra-weak signal detection capability and the extremely low timing jitter properties of single-photon detectors, the combination of single-photon detection and classical microwave photonics technology may provide a solution to break the above bottlenecks. In this paper, we first report a novel concept of single-photon microwave photonics (SP-MWP), a SP-MWP signal processing system with phase shifting and frequency filtering functionalities is demonstrated based on a superconducting nanowire single photon detector (SNSPD) and a successive time-correlated single photon counting (TCSPC) module. Experimental results show that an ultrahigh optical sensitivity down to -100 dBm has been achieved, and the signal processing bandwidth is only limited by the timing jitter of single-photon detectors. In the meantime, the proposed system demonstrates an ultrahigh anti-interference capability, only the signal which is phase locked by the trigger signal in TCSPC can be extracted from the detected signals combining with noise and strong interference. The proposed SP-MWP concept paves a way to a novel interdisciplinary field of microwave photonics and quantum mechanism, named by quantum microwave photonics.

Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the fourth leading cause of death in China. Although numerous studies have been conducted to determine the risk factors for COPD mortality such as ambient air pollution, the results are not fully consistent. Methods: This study included mortality analysis and a case-control design by using the data extracted from the Mortality Registration System in Jiading District, Shanghai. Traditional logistic regression, geographically weighted logistic regression (GWLR), and spatial scan statistical analysis were performed to explore the geographic variation of COPD mortality and the possible influencing factors. Results: Traditional logistic regression showed that extreme lower temperature in the month prior to death, shorter distance to highway, lower GDP level were associated with increased COPD mortality. GWRL model further demonstrated obvious geographical discrepancies for the above associations. We additionally identified a significant cluster of low COPD mortality (OR = 0.36, P = 0.002) in the southwest region of Jiading District with a radius of 3.55 km by using the Bernoulli model. The geographical variation in age-standardized mortality rate for COPD in Jiading District was explained to a certain degree by these factors. Conclusion: The risk of COPD mortality in Jiading District showed obvious geographical variation, which were partially explained by the geographical variations in effects of the extreme low temperature in the month prior to death, residential proximity to highway, and GDP level.

The flow and drag induced by active pitching of plates in the wake of a cylinder of diameter d were experimentally studied for various plate lengths L as well as pitching frequencies f_{p} and amplitudes A_{0} at Reynolds number Re=1.6×10^{4}. Planar particle image velocimetry and a load cell were used to characterize the flow statistics and mean drag of a variety of cylinder-splitter assemblies. Results show the distinctive effect of active pitching on these quantities. In particular, flow recovery was significantly modulated by L, f_{p}, or A_{0}. Specific pitching settings resulted in a wake with dominant meandering patterns and faster flow recovery. We defined a modified version of the amplitude-based Strouhal number of the system St_{A} to account for the effect of the cylinder in active pitching. It characterizes the drag coefficient C_{d} across all the cases studied, and reveals two regions intersecting at a critical value of St_{A}≈0.035. Below this value, the C_{d} remained nearly constant; however, it exhibited a linear increase with increasing St_{A} past this critical point. Inspection of the integral momentum equation showed the dominant role of velocity fluctuations in modulating C_{d} past the critical St_{A}.

Cancer is a severe lethal disease. Currently, immunotherapy has become an effective alternative therapeutic approach for cancers. Cytokine-induced killer (CIK) cells have a higher proliferation rate, increased efficacy with few side-effects, and non-MHC-restricted killing after co-culturing with dendritic cells (DCs). Therefore, it has been widely studied and applied in the treatment of cancers. In our study, we explored the antitumor effects of CIK cells co-culturing with DCs pulsed with non-cell derived targeting peptides, which could specifically bind to certain tumor cells. Our results indicated that targeting peptide-loaded DCs could enhance the differentiation and cytotoxicity of CIK cells. Moreover, CIK cells, which were treated with specific targeting peptide-loaded DCs, could effectively and specifically kill tumor cells in vitro and in vivo, as long as tumor cells were pre-coated with the specific binding peptides. In conclusion, targeting peptides could guide DC-CIK to effectively and specifically kill tumor cells which were pre-coated with these targeting peptides and non-cell derived targeting peptide-loaded-DC-CIK may work as a novel means for cancer therapy.

Thrombosis, a critical event in blood vessels, not only is associated with myocardial infarction and stroke, but also accounts for considerable morbidity and mortality. Thrombolytic drugs are usually applied to the treatment of acute myocardial infarction, acute cerebral infarction and pulmonary embolism. However, thrombolytic drugs show limited efficacy in clinical practice because of the short half-life in plasma and systemic side effects. In this study, the cyclic RGD (cRGD) functionalized liposomes were prepared to encapsulate urokinase, a cheap and widely used thrombolytic drug in clinic and better thrombolysis efficacy was achieved. The flow cytometry analysis showed that the cRGD liposomes could bind to the activated platelets while not to the resting platelets. In vitro release study revealed that the release percentage reached plateau in about 5 h with 60% urokinase being released from liposomes. Results from the in vitro thrombolysis experiments demonstrated a good thrombolysis potential of the cRGD urokinase liposomes. The in vivo thrombolysis study demonstrated that the cRGD liposomes could significantly reduce the dose of urokinase by 75% while achieving the equivalent thrombolysis effect as the free urokinase in mouse mesenteric thrombosis model. In conclusion, the cRGD liposomes encapsulating urokinase hold great promise in clinic for better thrombolytic efficacy. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: In this paper, the cRGD liposomes were prepared to encapsulate urokinase for targeted thrombolysis therapy. The cRGD liposomes could specifically bind to the activated platelets and could stably and continuously release its loaded urokinase. The mouse mesenteric thrombosis model was established to evaluate the thrombolysis effect of the cRGD urokinase liposomes. The results demonstrated that the cRGD liposomes could improve the thrombolytic efficacy by almost 4-fold over free urokinase. In conclusion, the cRGD liposomes encapsulating urokinase had great potential for the clinical treatment of thrombosis.

Immunotherapy has become a promising alternative therapeutic approach for cancer patients. Interruption of immune checkpoints, such as CTLA-4 and PD-1, has been verified to be a successful means for cancer therapy in clinical trials. mAb targeting PD-L1 has been approved to treat urothelial carcinoma, non-small cell lung cancer, or Merkel cell carcinoma by the FDA. However, the high cost of the antibody can limit its application. In our study, targeting PD-L1 peptide (TPP-1), which specifically binds to PD-L1 with high affinity, was identified through bacterial surface display methods. Using a T-cell activation assay and mixed lymphocyte reaction, TPP-1 was verified to interfere with the interaction of PD-1/PD-L1. To examine the inhibitory effect of TPP-1 on tumor growth in vivo, a xenograft mouse model using H460 cells was established. The growth rate of tumor masses in TPP-1 or PD-L1 antibody-treated mice was 56% or 71% lower than that in control peptide-treated mice, respectively, indicating that TPP-1 inhibits, or at least retards, tumor growth. IHC of the tumors showed that IFNγ and granzyme B expression increased in the TPP-1 or PD-L1 antibody-treated groups, indicating that TPP-1 attenuates the inhibitory effect of PD-L1 on T cells and that T cells may get reactivated. Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are responsible for cancer initiating, recurrence, and drug resistance. Discovery of novel biomarkers for CSCs is helpful for early diagnosis and prognosis. Lung cancer stem cells (LCSCs) were closely related to the occurrence and development of lung cancer. In our study, the important role of miR-2861 in maintaining the stemness of LCSCs was investigated. The LCSC differentiation model was established through introducing serum into the medium of H460 spheres. miR-2861 expression was significantly higher in LCSCs no matter compared to the differentiation cells or normal cells. HDAC5 expression was positively correlated with miR-2861 in LCSCs, and knockdown of miR-2861 decreased the expression of HDAC5, which implied that HDAC5 may be involved in the differentiation of LCSCs mediated by miR-2861. The role of HDAC5 in the regulation of LCSC differentiation was further verified by the inhibitory effect of LMK-235 on the phosphorylation of ERK1/2, which was recognized as the regulator of CSC differentiation. Our study provided a better understanding of miR-2861 and HDAC5 axis in maintaining the stemness of LCSCs and laid a foundation for molecular targeted therapy.

The structure of the turbulence-driven power fluctuations in a wind farm is fundamentally described from basic concepts. A derived tuning-free model, supported with experiments, reveals the underlying spectral content of the power fluctuations of a wind farm. It contains two power-law trends and oscillations in the relatively low- and high-frequency ranges. The former is mostly due to the turbulent interaction between the flow and the turbine properties, whereas the latter is due to the advection between turbine pairs. The spectral wind-farm scale power fluctuations Φ_{P} exhibit a power-law decay proportional to f^{-5/3-2} in the region corresponding to the turbulence inertial subrange and at relatively large scales, Φ_{P}∼f^{-2}. Due to the advection and turbulent diffusion of large-scale structures, a spectral oscillation exists with the product of a sinusoidal behavior and an exponential decay in the frequency domain.

A dual-functional delivery system, based on mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) with the integration of Magnetic Resonance (MR) imaging and therapeutic peptide delivery, is reported in this paper. A lipid bilayer is attached onto the surface of the nanoparticles, following the doping of Gadolinium (Gd), a paramagnetic lanthanide ion. The liposome-coated GdMSNs exhibit improved colloidal stability, better biocompatibility and more efficient cellular uptake. The Gd renders the nano carrier a potential T1 contrast agent, confirmed by the MR imaging. A pro-apoptotic peptide, KLA (HGGKLAKLAKKLAKLAK), is encapsulated into the GdMSNs-LP and enters into the cells successfully to induce mitochondrial swelling and apoptosis, while it is nontoxic outside the cells. The synthesis procedure is convenient and free of toxic organic reagents. The nanosystem we construct may contribute to a promising theranostic platform for therapeutic peptide delivery in cancer treatment.

The rotation of rigid bodies and oscillation of flexible structures under turbulence are described and characterized in the spectral domain. Laboratory experiments combined with theory are used to unravel and explain the characteristic power-law decay of the spectrum of rotation and oscillation of simple structures. It is shown that the energy-containing eddies and inertial subrange of the incoming velocity spectrum strongly modulate the unsteady motions of structures. The spectra of the rotation and oscillation of the structures exhibit distinctive power-law decays f^{+2} and f^{-5/3-2} in the comparatively low- and high-frequency regions. The range of these regions depends on the phenomenon triggering the motions, i.e., thrust or vortex-induced motions.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate and describe the epidemiological characteristics of suicide in the elderly in Jiading, Shanghai, for the period 2003-2013. DESIGN: Retrospective, observational, epidemiological study using routinely collected data. SETTING: Jiading District, Shanghai. METHODS: Suicide data were retrieved from the Shanghai Vital Registry database for the period 2003-2013. Crude and age-standardised mortality rates were calculated for various groups according to sex and age. Joinpoint regression was performed to estimate the percentage change (PC) and annual percentage change (APC) for suicide mortality. RESULT: A total of 956 deaths due to suicide occurred among people aged ≥65 years during the study period, accounting for 76.7% (956/1247) of all suicide decedents. Among the 956 people with suicide deaths, 88.7% (848/956) had a history of a psychiatric condition. The age-standardised mortality rates for suicide without and with a psychotic history in people aged ≥65 years were much higher than those for people aged <65 years in both genders. Suicide mortality in the elderly showed a declining trend, with a PC of -51.5% for men and -47.5% for women. The APC was -29.1 in 2003-2005, 4.6 in 2005-2008 and -9.7 in 2008-2013 for aged men, and -12.2 in 2003-2006 and -5.2 in 2006-2013 for aged women, respectively. Women living in Jiading had a higher risk of suicide death than men, especially among the elderly. The mortality rate for suicide increased with age in the elderly, and was more marked for those with a psychiatric history than for those without. CONCLUSIONS: Suicide mortality declined in Jiading during the study period 2003-2013 overall, but remained high in the elderly, especially those with a psychiatric history.
