RESUMEN

Sulfonamides were developed by the simple reaction of amino acid with p-toluenesulfonyl chloride and structures of the new products (2a, 2b and 2c) were confirmed by elemental and spectral analysis (FT-IR, 1HNMR and13CNMR). In vitro, developed compounds were screened for their antibacterial and antifungal activities against two sensitive bacteria belonging to both gram positive and gram-negative types and two fungi. The synthesized sulfonamides (2a, 2b, 2c) exhibited excellent antifungal activities against the tested fungi. Among the tested compounds 2a and 2b have marked activity against E. coli with zone of inhibition (mm) 22.3±0.11and 20.2±0.26 (MIC: 12.5µg/mL, 12.5µg/mL) and S. aureus with zone of inhibition (mm) 20.2±0.26 and 23.2±0.55 (MIC: 12.5µg/mL, 6.25µg/mL). Compound 2c is moderately efficient towards E. coli (zone of inhibition (mm) 14.2±0.64, MIC: 100µg/mL) and no activity against S. aureus.

MOFs are emerging photocatalysts designed by tuning organic ligands and metal centers for optimal efficiency. In this study, a samarium decorated MOF-808(Ce) metal organic framework was fabricated by facile hydrothermal synthesis. The synthesized samarium decorated MOF-808(Ce) was characterized by using analytical techniques such as SEM, EDX, XRD and TGA to study its morphological, thermal and structural properties. SEM images showed that MOF-808(Ce) comprised of truncated octahedrons. The morphology of the material was changed upon Sm incorporation. Sm/MOF-808(Ce) exhibited better UV-vis light absorption properties than MOF-808(Ce) as evidenced by its slightly higher band gap value. This material was exploited for the degradation of the drug cefaclor from water. Cefaclor removal followed double a first order in parallel model (DFOP). Under UV light, 97.7% of the cefaclor was removed in only 20 minutes and after 60 minutes this removal efficiency was increased to 99.25%. These features exhibited that samarium decorated MOF has immense potential for the photocatalytic degradation of cefaclor as it generates e- and h+ to enhance the photocatalytic efficiency and it is a promising candidate to treat wastewater without formation of harmful byproducts.

Elevated levels of trace metals (TMs) and heavy/non-essential metals (HnMs) in commonly consumed beverages concern the public and regulatory agencies. Thus, frequent monitoring of these metals is critically important. The present study intended to assess TMs and HnMs concentrations and associated health risks in beverages. Ten metals, such as Mn, Co, Cr, Cu, and Zn (TMs) and Ni, Cd, Pb, Al, and As (HnMs), were quantified in different beverage brands categorized into two groups such as non-carbonated and carbonated beverages. Chemometric analysis such as hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA), Pearson's correlation coefficient (PCC), and principal component analysis (PCA) were also performed to demonstrate the possible natural and anthropogenic sources of metal contamination. Among the TMs, the mean concentration of Zn (233.3 ± 3.3-291.7 ± 3.2 µg/L) followed by Mn (119.0 ± 2.3-146.4 ± 2.2 µg/L) was found highest in both carbonated and non-carbonated beverage samples. In the case of HnMs, the lowest mean concentration of Cd (7.4 ± 0.9-18.6 ± 1.2 µg/L) followed by Pb (4.1 ± 0.4-4.5 ± 0.4 µg/L) was observed in both types of beverage samples. The tolerable dietary intake (TDI) value for Ni and provisional tolerable monthly intake (PTMI) value for Cd were higher than the value established by the WHO and EFSA. The computed values of the hazard index (HI < 1) and the cumulative cancer risk (CCR) indicated a low risk of exposure.
