RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Caregivers of people with dementia find it extremely difficult to choose the best care method because of complex environments and the variable symptoms of dementia. To alleviate this care burden, interventions have been proposed that use computer- or web-based applications. For example, an automatic diagnosis of the condition can improve the well-being of both the person with dementia and the caregiver. Other interventions support the individual with dementia in living independently. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to develop an ontology-based care knowledge management system for people with dementia that will provide caregivers with a care guide suited to the environment and to the individual patient's symptoms. This should also enable knowledge sharing among caregivers. METHODS: To build the care knowledge model, we reviewed existing ontologies that contain concepts and knowledge descriptions relating to the care of those with dementia, and we considered dementia care manuals. The basic concepts of the care ontology were confirmed by experts in Korea. To infer the different care methods required for the individual dementia patient, the reasoning rules as defined in Semantic Web Rule Languages and Prolog were utilized. The accuracy of the care knowledge in the ontological model and the usability of the proposed system were evaluated by using the Pellet reasoner and OntOlogy Pitfall Scanner!, and a survey and interviews were conducted with caregivers working in care centers in Korea. RESULTS: The care knowledge model contains six top-level concepts: care knowledge, task, assessment, person, environment, and medical knowledge. Based on this ontological model of dementia care, caregivers at a dementia care facility in Korea were able to access the care knowledge easily through a graphical user interface. The evaluation by the care experts showed that the system contained accurate care knowledge and a level of assessment comparable to normal assessment tools. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, we developed a care knowledge system that can provide caregivers with care guides suited to individuals with dementia. We anticipate that the system could reduce the workload of caregivers.

In this study, the chemical state change of recycled carbon fiber (rCF) surfaces and the mechanism of the oxygen functional groups according to nitric acid treatment at various times and temperatures were investigated to upcycle the carbon fiber recovered from used carbon composite. When treated with nitric acid at 25 °C, the carbon fiber surface demonstrated the same tensile properties as untreated carbon fiber (CF) for up to 5 h, and the oxygen functional group and polar surface energy of C-O (hydroxyl group) and C=O (carbonyl group) increased slightly compared to the untreated CF up to 5 h. On the other hand, at 100 °C, the tensile properties slightly decreased compared to untreated CF up to 5 h, and the amount of C-O and C=O decreased and the amount of O=C-O (lactone group) started to increase until 1 h. After 1 h, the amount of C-O and C=O decreased significantly, and the amount of O=C-O increased rapidly. At 5 h, the amount of oxygen functional groups increased by 92%, and the polar surface energy increased by 200% compared to desized CF. It was determined that the interfacial bonding force increased the most because the oxygen functional group, O=C-O, increased greatly at 100 °C and 5 h.

Upcycling recycled carbon fibers recovered from waste carbon composites can reduce the price of carbon fibers while improving disposal-related environmental problems. This study assessed and characterized recycled carbon fibers subjected to sizing treatment using N-(2-aminoethyl)-3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APS) chemically coordinated with polyamide 6 (PA6) and polypropylene (PP) resins. Sizing treatment with 1 wt.% APS for 10 s yielded O=C-O on the surface of the carbon fiber, and the -SiOH in the APS underwent a dehydration-condensation reaction that converted O=C-O (lactone groups) into bonds of C-O (hydroxyl groups) and C=O (carbonyl groups). The effects of C-O and C=O on the interfacial bonding force increased to a maximum, resulting in an oxygen-to-carbon ratio (O/C) of 0.26. The polar/surface energy ratio showed the highest value of 32.29% at 10 s, and the interfacial bonding force showed the maximum value of 32 MPa at 10 s, which is about 15% better than that of commercial carbon fiber (PA6-based condition). In 10 s resizing treatments with 0.5 wt.% 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MPS), C-O, C=O, and O=C-O underwent a dehydration-condensation reaction with -SiOH, which broke the bonds between carbon and oxygen and introduced a methacrylate group (H2C=C(CH3)CO2H), resulting in a significant increase in C-O and C=O, with an O/C of 0.51. The polar/surface free energy ratio was about 38% at 10 s, with the interfacial bonding force increasing to 27% compared to commercial carbon fiber (PP-based conditions). MPS exhibited a superior interfacial shear strength improvement, two times higher than that of APS, with excellent coordination with PP resin and commercial carbon fiber, although the interfacial bonding strength of the PP resin was significantly lower.

In this paper, in order to upcycle carbon fibers (CF), the changes in their mechanical and chemical properties in accordance with time and temperature were investigated, in addition to the oxygen functional group mechanism. When acetone as a chemical desizing agent was used, treatment with acetone for 0.5 h at 60 °C was the optimal condition for the complete removal of the sizing agent, and there was no deterioration in tensile strength. At 25 °C, the carbonyl group (C=O) and hydroxyl group (C-O) declined in comparison to commercial CF, but a novel lactone group (O=C-O) was created. At 60 °C, the oxygen present in the sizing agent was removed and C=O, C-O, and O=C-O decreased. On the contrary, in the case of thermal desizing in an inert gas nitrogen atmosphere, by increasing the temperature, functional groups combining carbon and oxygen were reduced, because nitrogen and oxygen atoms combined with C=O and C-O on the CF surface were eliminated in the form of CO, NO, CO2, NO2, and O2. When desizing via chemical and thermal methods, the amount of functional groups combining carbon and oxygen on the CF surface decreased. Desizing was performed as a pretreatment for surface treatment, so the methods and conditions were different, and related research is insufficient. In this study, we attempted to derive the optimal conditions for desizing treatment by identifying the surface characteristics and mechanisms according to chemical and thermal desizing treatment methods.

In this study, carbon fibers were heat-treated in a nitrogen and oxygen atmosphere according to temperature to elucidate the mechanism of chemical state changes and oxygen functional group changes on the carbon fiber surface by analyzing the mechanical and chemical properties of carbon fibers. Carbon fibers before and after heat treatment were analyzed using FE-SEM (Field Emission Scanning), UTM (Universal Tensile Testers), XPS (X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy), and surface-free energy. In the nitrogen atmosphere, which is an inert gas, the tensile strength was equivalent to that of the virgin up to 500 °C but decreased to 71% with respect to the virgin at 1000 °C. Furthermore, as the temperature increased from room temperature to 1000 °C, the oxygen functional group and the polar free energy gradually decreased compared with the virgin. On the other hand, in the oxygen atmosphere, which is an active gas, the tensile properties were not significantly different from those of the virgin up to 300 °C but gradually decreased at 500 °C. Above 600 °C, the carbon fibers deteriorated, and measurement was impossible. The oxygen functional group decreased at 300 °C, but above 300 °C, among the oxygen functional groups, the hydroxyl group and the carbonyl group increased. Furthermore, the lactone group formed and rapidly increased compared with the virgin, and the polar free energy increased as the temperature increased.

RESUMEN

In this paper, we introduce a care guide system for caregivers of People with Dementia (PwD) at home or care facility. The system is composed of context data manager, ontological model of caring PwD, and reasoning system that adaptively generates care guides in various circumstances. Caregivers can utilize the proposed system by managing care knowledge through graphical user interface or inquire a care guide through smartphone application for text-based chatting. Knowledge models implemented in the proposed system were evaluated by the experts in caring people with dementia.
