RESUMEN

In recent 10 years, many studies have investigated/considered negative capacitance field effect transistor (NCFET) as future low-power device. In addition to the experimental demonstration of NC planar bulk MOSFET, the state-of-the-art 14 nm FinFET technology has adopted the benefits of using negative capacitance and therefore, the NC-FinFET is expected to be available in market. However, there is a lack of experimental study on NC Silicon-on-Insulator (SOI) FET, which should be another candidate for ultra-low-power device. To complement the lack of such studies, in this work, the experimental study on NCSOI device (e.g., the degree of hysteresis, steep switching characteristic, and so on) has been done with reliable 10 nm hafnium-based ferroelectric capacitor.

RESUMEN

Flexible intracortical neural probes have drawn attention for their enhanced longevity in high-resolution neural recordings due to reduced tissue reaction. However, the conventional monolithic fabrication approach has met significant challenges in: (i) scaling the number of recording sites for electrophysiology; (ii) integrating of other physiological sensing and modulation; and (iii) configuring into three-dimensional (3D) shapes for multi-sided electrode arrays. We report an innovative self-assembly technology that allows for implementing flexible origami neural probes as an effective alternative to overcome these challenges. By using magnetic-field-assisted hybrid self-assembly, multiple probes with various modalities can be stacked on top of each other with precise alignment. Using this approach, we demonstrated a multifunctional device with scalable high-density recording sites, dopamine sensors and a temperature sensor integrated on a single flexible probe. Simultaneous large-scale, high-spatial-resolution electrophysiology was demonstrated along with local temperature sensing and dopamine concentration monitoring. A high-density 3D origami probe was assembled by wrapping planar probes around a thin fiber in a diameter of 80∼105 µm using optimal foldable design and capillary force. Directional optogenetic modulation could be achieved with illumination from the neuron-sized micro-LEDs (µLEDs) integrated on the surface of 3D origami probes. We could identify angular heterogeneous single-unit signals and neural connectivity 360° surrounding the probe. The probe longevity was validated by chronic recordings of 64-channel stacked probes in behaving mice for up to 140 days. With the modular, customizable assembly technologies presented, we demonstrated a novel and highly flexible solution to accommodate multifunctional integration, channel scaling, and 3D array configuration.

RESUMEN

The open reading frame of dsrE563, a dextransucrase gene obtained from a constitutive mutant (CB4-BF563) of Leuconostoc mesenteroides B-1299, consists of 8,511 bp encoding 2,836 amino acid residues. DsrE563 contains two catalytic domains (CD1 and CD2). Two truncated derivative mutants DsrE563ΔCD2ΔGBD (DsrE563-1) and DsrE563ΔCD2ΔVR (DsrE563-2) of DsrE563 were constructed and expressed using the pRSETC vector in Escherichia coli. The derivatives DsrE563-1 (deletion of 1,620 amino acids from the C-terminus) and DsrE563-2 (deletion of 1,258 amino acids from the C-terminus and 349 amino acids from the N-terminus) were expressed as active enzymes. Both enzymes synthesized less-soluble dextran, mainly containing α-1,6 glucosidic linkage. The synthesized less-soluble dextran also had a branched α-1,3 linkage. DsrE563-2 showed 4.5-fold higher dextransucrase activity than that of DsrE563-1 and showed higher acceptor reaction efficiency than that of dextransucrase from L. mesenteroides 512 FMCM when various mono or disaccharides were used as acceptors. Thus, the glucan-binding domain was important for both enzyme expression and dextransucrase activity.

RESUMEN

Dynamic interactions within and across brain areas underlie behavioral and cognitive functions. To understand the basis of these processes, the activities of distributed local circuits inside the brain of a behaving animal must be synchronously recorded while the inputs to these circuits are precisely manipulated. Even though recent technological advances have enabled such large-scale recording capabilities, the development of the high-spatiotemporal-resolution and large-scale modulation techniques to accompany those recordings has lagged. A novel neural probe is presented in this work that enables simultaneous electrical monitoring and optogenetic manipulation of deep neuronal circuits at large scales with a high spatiotemporal resolution. The "hectoSTAR" micro-light-emitting-diode (µLED) optoelectrode features 256 recording electrodes and 128 stimulation µLEDs monolithically integrated on the surface of its four 30-µm thick silicon micro-needle shanks, covering a large volume with 1.3-mm × 0.9-mm cross-sectional area located as deep as 6 mm inside the brain. The use of this device in behaving mice for dissecting long-distance network interactions across cortical layers and hippocampal regions is demonstrated. The recording-and-stimulation capabilities hectoSTAR µLED optoelectrodes enables will open up new possibilities for the cellular and circuit-based investigation of brain functions in behaving animals.

RESUMEN

An artificial fusion protein of Arthrobacter oxydans dextranase and Klebsiella pneumoniae alpha-amylase was constructed and expressed in Escherichia coli. Most of the expressed protein existed as an insoluble fraction, which was solubilized with urea. The purified fusion enzyme electrophoretically migrated as a single protein band; M = 137 kDa, and exhibited activities of both dextranase (10.8 U mg(-1)) and amylase (7.1 U mg(-1)), which were lower than that of reference dextranase (13.3 U mg(-1)) and alpha-amylase (103 U mg(-1)). The fusion enzyme displayed bifunctional enzyme activity at pH 5-7 at 37 degrees C. These attributes potentially make the fusion enzyme more convenient for use in sugar processing than a two-enzyme system.

RESUMEN

Simply including either single ferroelectric oxide layer or threshold selector, we can make conventional field effect transistor to have super steep switching characteristic, i.e., sub-60-mV/decade of subthreshold slope. One of the representative is negative capacitance FET (NCFET), in which a ferroelectric layer is added within its gate stack. The other is phase FET (i.e., negative resistance FET), in which a threshold selector is added to an electrode (e.g., source or drain) of conventional field effect transistor. Although the concept of the aforementioned two devices was presented more or less recently, numerous studies have been published. In this review paper, by reviewing the published studies over the last decade, we shall de-brief and discuss the history and the future perspectives of NCFET/phase FET, respectively. The background, experimental investigation, and future direction for developing the aforementioned two representative steep switching devices (i.e., NCFET and phase FET/negative resistance FET) are to be discussed in detail.

RESUMEN

High-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is widely used as sweetener, and its overconsumption is become a major health problem. In the present study, we used adult female rats and applied a 28 days HFCS feeding model to monitor the estrous cycle and changes in tissue weights and histology. Adult female rats were divided into three groups. Animals were fed with ad libitum normal chow and (1) 24 hours tap water (Control group), (2) 12 hours HFCS access during dark period and 12 hours tap water (12H group), and (3) 24 hours HFCS only access (24H group). Total exposure period was 28 days. There is no significant change in body weight between control and HFCS-fed animals. Both absolute and relative weights of ovary in 24H animals were significantly heavier than those in control or 12H animals. The absolute and relative weights of the kidney and liver in 24H groups were significantly heavier than those in control or 12H animals. The estrous cycles of the 24H animals were significantly longer. Histological analyses revealed that 24H ovaries were relatively bigger and possessed more corpus lutea than control ovaries. Uterine sections of 12H and 24H animals showed a well-developed stratum vasculare between inner and outer myometrial layers. The number of endometrial glands were decreased in 12H uteri, and recovered in 24H uteri compared to control. Numbers of convoluted tubule in distal region increased in 12H and 24H kidney samples. Liver specimens of 12H and 24H showed the increased number of fat containing vacuoles. In conclusion, our study demonstrated that HFCS treatment for 28 days could induce (1) changes in length of estrous cycle with extended estrous and diestrous stages, (2) altered ovarian and uterine histology, and (3) liver and renal lipid accumulation. These findings reveal the adverse effects of HFCS drinking on the reproductive function and lipid metabolism of female rats.
