RESUMEN

Microangiopathy should be noted in diabetes with subclinical vascular diseases. Little is known about whether various surrogate markers of systemic arterial trees exacerbate simultaneously in preclinical atherosclerosis. To clarify the association of skin microvascular reactivity with arterial stiffness is essential to elucidating early atherosclerotic changes. The post-occlusive reactive hyperemia of skin microcirculation was evaluated in 27 control and 65 type 2 diabetic subjects, including 31 microalbuminuria (MAU) and 34 normoalbuminuria (NAU) patients. The laser Doppler skin perfusion signals were transformed into three frequency intervals for the investigation of endothelial, neurogenic, and myogenic effects on basal and reactive flow motion changes. The analysis of spectral intensity and distribution provided insight into potential significance of microvascular regulation in subclinical atherosclerotic diseases. Systemic arterial stiffness was studied by the brachial ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV). Following occlusive ischemia, the percent change of endothelial flow motion was lower in MAU than in NAU and control groups. The MAU group revealed a relative increase in myogenic activity and a decrease in endothelial activity in normalized spectra. The baPWV showed more significant associations with reactive endothelial change (r = - 0.48, P < 0.01) and normalized myogenic value (r = - 0.37, P < 0.05) than diabetes duration and HbA1c. By multivariate regression analysis, only endothelial vasomotor changes independently contributed to the decreased baPWV (OR 3.47, 95% CI 1.63-7.42, P < 0.05). Impaired microcirculatory control is associated with increased arterial stiffness in preclinical atherosclerosis. To identify the early manifestations is necessary for at-risk patients to prevent from further vascular damage.

Gattinoni's equation, [Formula: see text], now commonly used to calculate the mechanical power (MP) of ventilation. However, it calculates only inspiratory MP. In addition, the inclusion of PEEP in Gattinoni's equation raises debate because PEEP does not produce net displacement or contribute to MP. Measuring the area within the pressure-volume loop accurately reflects the MP received in a whole ventilation cycle and the MP thus obtained is not influenced by PEEP. The MP of 25 invasively ventilated patients were calculated by Gattinoni's equation and measured by integration of the areas within the pressure-volume loops of the ventilation cycles. The MP obtained from both methods were compared. The effects of PEEPs on MP were also evaluated. We found that the MP obtained from both methods were correlated by R2 = 0.75 and 0.66 at PEEP 5 and 10 cmH2O, respectively. The biases of the two methods were 3.13 (2.03 to 4.23) J/min (P < 0.0001) and - 1.23 (- 2.22 to - 0.24) J/min (P = 0.02) at PEEP 5 and 10 cmH2O, respectively. These P values suggested that both methods were significantly incongruent. When the tidal volume used was 6 ml/Kg, the MP by Gattinoni's equation at PEEP 5 and 10 cmH2O were significantly different (4.51 vs 7.21 J/min, P < 0.001), but the MP by PV loop area was not influenced by PEEPs (6.46 vs 6.47 J/min, P = 0.331). Similar results were observed across all tidal volumes. We conclude that the Gattinoni's equation is not accurate in calculating the MP of a whole ventilatory cycle and is significantly influenced by PEEP, which theoretically does not contribute to MP.

The objective of this study was to synthesize the 9-/13-position substituted berberine derivatives and evaluate their cytotoxic and photocytotoxic effects against three human cancer cell lines. Among all the synthesized compounds, 9-O-dodecyl- (5e), 13-dodecyl- (6e), and 13-O-dodecyl-berberine (7e) exhibited stronger growth inhibition against three human cancer cell lines, (HepG2, HT-29 and BFTC905), in comparison with structurally related berberine (1). These three compounds also showed the photocytotoxicity in human cancer cells in a concentration-dependent and light dose-dependent manner. Through flow cytometry analysis, we found out a lipophilic group at the 9-/13-position of berberine may have facilitated its penetration into test cells and hence enhanced its photocytotoxicity on the human liver cancer cell HepG2. Further, in cell cycle analysis, 5e, 6e, and 7e induced HepG2 cells to arrest at the S phase and caused apoptosis upon irradiation. In addition, photodynamic treatment of berberine derivatives 5e, 6e, and 7e again showed a significant photocytotoxic effects on HepG2 cells, induced remarkable cell apoptosis, greatly increased intracellular ROS level, and the loss of mitochondrial membrane potential. These results over and again confirmed that berberine derivatives 5e, 6e, and 7e greatly enhanced photocytotoxicity. Taken together, the test data led us to conclude that berberine derivatives with a dodecyl group at the 9-/13-position could be great candidates for the anti-liver cancer medicines developments.

BACKGROUND: The morbidity and mortality of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) remains high, and the strategic focus of ARDS research has shifted toward identifying patients at high risk of mortality early in the course of illness. This study intended to identify the heart rate variability (HRV) measure that can predict the outcome of patients with ARDS on admission to the surgical intensive care unit (SICU). METHODS: Patients who had lung or esophageal cancer surgery were included either in the ARDS group (n = 21) if they developed ARDS after surgery or in the control group (n = 11) if they did not. The ARDS patients were further stratified into survivors and non-survivors subgroups according to their outcomes. HRV measures of the patients were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: The mean RR interval (mRRI), high-frequency power (HFP) and product of low-/high-frequency power ratio tidal volume and tidal volume (LHR*VT) were significantly lower (p < 0.05), while the normalized HFP to VT ratio (nHFP/VT) was significantly higher in the ARDS patients (p = 0.011). The total power (TP), low-frequency power (LFP), HFP and HFP/VT were all significantly higher in the non-survived ARDS patients, whereas Richmond Agitation-Sedation Scale (RASS) was significantly lower in the non-survived ARDS patients. After adjustment for RASS, age and gender, firth logistic regression analysis identified the HFP, TP as the significant independent predictors of mortality for ARDS patients. CONCLUSIONS: The vagal modulation of thoracic surgical patients with ARDS was enhanced as compared to that of non-ARDS patients, and the non-survived ARDS patients had higher vagal activity than those of survived ARDS patients. The vagal modulation-related parameters such as TP and HFP were independent predictors of mortality in patients with ARDS on admission to the SICU, and the HFP was found to be the best predictor of mortality for those ARDS patients. Increased vagal modulation might be an indicator for poor prognosis in critically ill patients following thoracic surgery.

Though lung sounds auscultation is important for the diagnosis and monitoring of lung diseases, the spectral characteristics of lung sounds have not been fully understood. This study compared the spectral characteristics of lung sounds between the right and left lungs and between healthy male and female subjects using a dual-channel auscultation system. Forty-two subjects aged 18-22 years without smoking habits and any known pulmonary diseases participated in this study. The lung sounds were recorded from seven pairs of auscultation sites on the chest wall simultaneously. We found that in four out of seven auscultation pairs, the lung sounds from the left lung had a higher total power (PT) than those from the right lung. The PT of male subjects was higher than that of female ones in most auscultation pairs. The ratio of inspiration power to expiration power (RI/E) of lung sounds from the right lung was greater than that from the left lung at auscultation pairs on the anterior chest wall, while this phenomenon was reversed at auscultation pairs on the posterior chest wall in combined subjects, and similarly in both male and female subjects. Though the frequency corresponding to maximum power density of lung sounds (FMPD) from the left and right lungs was not significantly different, the frequency that equally divided the power spectrum of lung sounds (F50) from the left lung was significantly smaller than that from the right lung at auscultation site on the anterior and lateral chest walls, while it was significantly larger than that of from the right lung at auscultation site on the posterior chest walls. In conclusion, significant differences in the PT, FMPD, F50, and RI/E between the left and right lungs at some auscultation pairs were observed by using a dual-channel auscultation system in this study. Structural differences between the left and the right lungs, between the female and male subjects, and between anterior and posterior lungs might account for the observed differences in the spectral characteristics of lung sounds. The dual-channel auscultation system might be useful for future development of digital stethoscopes and power spectral analysis of lung sounds in patients with various kinds of cardiopulmonary diseases.

BACKGROUND: Tai Chi Chuan (TCC) is known to be a good calisthenics for people. This study examined the relationship between pulse harmonics and autonomic nervous modulation in TCC practitioners. METHODS: Power spectral measures of right pulse wave and heart rate variability (HRV) measures were compared between TCC practitioners and control subjects. Correlation analyses between pulse harmonics and HRV measures were performed using linear regression analysis. RESULTS: At baseline, the total power of pulse (TPp), powers of all individual pulse harmonics, normalized power of the 1(st) harmonics (nPh1) of TCC practitioners were greater, while the normalized power of the 4(th) pulse harmonics (nPh4) of TCC practitioners was smaller, than those of the controls. Similarly, the baseline standard deviation (SD(RR)), coefficient of variation (CV(RR)), and normalized high-frequency power (nHFP) of RR intervals were smaller, while the normalized very low-frequency power (nVLFP) and low-/high- frequency power ratio (LHR) were larger in the TCC practitioners. The TCC age correlated significantly and negatively with nPh1, and nearly significantly and negatively with nPh2 in the TCC practitioners. Thirty min after TCC exercise, the percentage changes in mRRI, SDRR, TP, VLFP were decreased, while the percentage changes in HR, ULFP, nLFP, and Ph2 were increased, relative to the controls. Correlation analysis shows that the %Ph2 correlates significantly and negatively with %mRRI and significantly and positively with %HR. CONCLUSION: The TCC practitioners had increased baseline total power of pulse and the 1(st) and 2(nd) pulse harmonics, and decreased power of the 4(th) pulse harmonics, along with decreased vagal modulation and increased sympathetic modulation. After TCC exercise, the power of the 2(nd) harmonics of TCC practitioners was increased which might be related to the increase in HR due to decreased vascular resistance after TCC exercise.

The precise relation between heart rate variability (HRV) and autonomic re-innervation has not been established explicitly in patients after orthotopic heart transplantation (OHT), but can be inferred from the fact that the HRV is reduced immediately after OHT and may increase gradually with time. The aim of this study was to investigate the residual HRV in patients about 1-2 years after OHT, as compared with patients after coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. Thirteen patients who had received OHT and 14 patients who had received CABG surgery were recruited. HRV analysis was performed and the HRV measures in supine position were compared between these two groups of patients. We found that the mean (mRRI), standard deviation and coefficient of variation of RR intervals, total power, very low frequency power (VLFP), low frequency power, high frequency power (HFP), normalized VLFP (nVLFP) and low-/high-frequency power ratio in the OHT group were all significantly decreased, while the heart rate (HR) and normalized HFP (nHFP) were significantly increased, as compared with the CABG group. The decrease in HRV was more severe in the VLFP region. A smaller nVLFP and a greater nHFP were associated with a smaller mRRI and a larger HR in the OHT patients. The slope of the power law relation of HRV became positive in OHT patients, instead of negative in CABG patients. We conclude that patients after OHT have residual HRV which were characterized by severely depressed time and frequency domain HRV, increased HR and nHFP, decreased nVLFP, and positive slope of the power-law relation of HRV. The use of nHFP as the indicator of vagal modulation and the use of nVLFP as the indicator of renin-angiotensin modulation, thermoregulation and vagal withdrawal must be careful in the OHT patients.

This study investigated the anticancer effects of N-farnesyloxy-norcantharimide (NOC15), a newly synthesized norcantharidin (NCTD) analogue, on human leukemic Jurkat T cells and the signaling pathway underlying its effects. We found that the half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of NOC15 on Jurkat T cells is 1.4 µmol/l, which is 11.14-fold (=15.6÷1.4) smaller than the 15.6 µmol/l of NCTD on Jurkat T cells, whereas the IC50 of NOC15 on human normal lymphoblast (HNL) is 207.9 µmol/l, which is 8.17-fold (=1698.0÷207.8) smaller than the 1698.0 µmol/l of NCTD on HNL cells. These results indicated that NOC15 exerts a higher anticancer effect on Jurkat T cells and has higher toxicity toward HNL cells than NCTD. Thus, NOC15 is 1.36-fold (=11.14÷8.17) beneficial as an anticancer agent toward Jurkat T cells compared with NCTD. Moreover, NOC15 can increase the percentage of cells in the sub-G1 phase and reduce the cell viability of Jurkat T cells, stimulate p38 and extracellular signal-regulated protein kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2) of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) signaling pathway, and inhibit calcineurin expression and interleukin-2 (IL-2) production. However, NOC15 exerted no effects on the Jun-N-terminal kinase 1/2 (JNK1/2) signaling pathway, the production of IL-8, and tumor necrosis factor-α. We conclude that the anticancer activity of the newly synthesized NOC15 is 1.36-fold beneficial than NCTD as an anticancer agent and that NOC15 can increase the percentage of cells in the sub-G1 phase through the stimulation of p38 and ERK1/2 of the MAPK signaling pathway and the inhibition of calcineurin expression and IL-2 production. The NOC15 may have the potential of being developed into an anticancer agent in the future.

This study investigated the anticancer effects of two newly synthesized norcantharidin analogs, N-farnesyloxy-norcantharimide (NOC15) and N-farnesyl-norcantharimide (NC15), in L1210 cells and in a syngeneic mouse leukemia model (L1210 cell line plus DBA/2 mice). We found that the half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of NOC15 and NC15 on L1210 cells is 1.56 and 2.62 µmol/l, respectively, and that the IC50 of NOC15 and NC15 on human normal lymphoblast is 207.9 and 2569 µmol/l, respectively. In cell cycle analysis, NOC15 could increase the sub-G1 phase, whereas NC15 could induce G2/M arrest. Annexin-V apoptosis assay indicated that both NOC15 and NC15 could induce cell apoptosis. In the syngeneic mouse leukemia model, both NOC15 and NC15 could increase the survival days of mice and decrease the tumor weight. Moreover, both NOC15 and NC15 could retard the increase in peripheral blood leukocyte count due to L1210 cells. In the subcutaneous (s.c.) group, the treatment with NOC15 could retard the decrease in the weight of the liver and the spleen caused by L1210 cells, whereas the treatment with NC15 could retard the decrease in the weight of the spleen caused by L1210 cells. We conclude that the new compounds NOC15 and NC15 have strong anticancer activity and low toxicity both in vitro and in vivo. NOC15 and NC15 may have the potential to be developed into anticancer agents in the future.

To examine the effect of hydrophobicity on the anticancer activity of 1,4-naphthoquinone derivatives, a series of compounds bearing a 2-O-alkyl-, 3-C-alkyl- or 2/3-N-morpholinoalkyl group were synthesized and evaluated for their anticancer activity against five human cancer cell lines in vitro. The cytotoxicity of these derivatives was assayed against HT-29, SW480, HepG2, MCF-7 and HL-60 cells by the MTT assay. Among them, 2-hydroxy-3-farnesyl-1,4-naphthoquinone (11a) was found to be the most cytotoxic against these cell lines. Our results showed that the effectiveness of compound 11a may be attributed to its suppression of the survival of HT-29. Secondly, in the Hoechst 33258 staining test, compound 11a-treated cells exhibited nuclear condensation typical of apoptosis. Additionally, cell cycle analysis by flow cytometry indicated that compound 11a arrested HT-29 cells in the S phase. Furthermore, cell death detected by Annexin V-FITC/propidium iodide staining showed that compound 11a efficiently induced apoptosis of HT-29 in a concentration-dependent manner. Taken together, compound 11a effectively inhibits colon cancer cell proliferation and may be a potent anticancer agent.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the breathing frequency (BF)-independent effect of Tai Chi Chuan (TCC) on autonomic nervous modulation in TCC practitioners. METHODS: Twenty-five TCC practitioners and 25 sedentary normal controls were recruited. The stationary heart rate variability (HRV) measures of TCC practitioners and controls were compared. The same HRV measures in TCC practitioners and among the controls, TCC practitioners before TCC and TCC practitioners 30 min after TCC were compared. RESULTS: In TCC practitioners, the BF, normalized high-frequency power (nHFP), and normalized very low-frequency power were significantly increased, while the normalized low-frequency power (nLFP) was significantly decreased 30 min after TCC. The BF correlated significantly and negatively with heart rate (HR), nHFP and nLFP, and correlated significantly and positively with mean RR interval (MnRR) before TCC in TCC practitioners. A slower BF is associated with a higher HR, a greater vagal modulation, and a greater combined sympatho-vagal modulation before TCC. To remove the effect of BF on HRV measures, new indices such as HR*BF, nHFP*BF, nLFP*BF, and MnRR/BF were introduced for comparison among the controls, TCC practitioners before TCC, and TCC practitioners 30 min after TCC. Thirty minutes after TCC, the MnRR/BF of TCC practitioner was smaller whereas HR*BF and nHFP*BF were greater than those before TCC. INTERPRETATION: The BF-independent effects of TCC on the autonomic nervous modulation of TCC practitioners are an increase in vagal modulation and HR, and a decrease in mean RR interval. The mechanism underlying the parallel increase in HR and vagal modulation in TCC practitioners is not understood yet at present.

The Poincaré plot of RR intervals (RRI) is obtained by plotting RRIn+1 against RRIn. The Pearson correlation coefficient (ρRRI), slope (SRRI), Y-intercept (YRRI), standard deviation of instantaneous beat-to-beat RRI variability (SD1RR), and standard deviation of continuous long-term RRI variability (SD2RR) can be defined to characterize the plot. Similarly, the Poincaré plot of autocorrelation function (ACF) of RRI can be obtained by plotting ACFk+1 against ACFk. The corresponding Pearson correlation coefficient (ρACF), slope (SACF), Y-intercept (YACF), SD1ACF, and SD2ACF can be defined similarly to characterize the plot. By comparing the indices of Poincaré plots of RRI and ACF between patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and patients with patent coronary artery (PCA), we found that the ρACF and SACF were significantly larger, whereas the RMSSDACF/SDACF and SD1ACF/SD2ACF were significantly smaller in AMI patients. The ρACF and SACF correlated significantly and negatively with normalized high-frequency power (nHFP), and significantly and positively with normalized very low-frequency power (nVLFP) of heart rate variability in both groups of patients. On the contrary, the RMSSDACF/SDACF and SD1ACF/SD2ACF correlated significantly and positively with nHFP, and significantly and negatively with nVLFP and low-/high-frequency power ratio (LHR) in both groups of patients. We concluded that the ρACF, SACF, RMSSDACF/SDACF, and SD1ACF/SD2ACF, among many other indices of ACF Poincaré plot, can be used to differentiate between patients with AMI and patients with PCA, and that the increase in ρACF and SACF and the decrease in RMSSDACF/SDACF and SD1ACF/SD2ACF suggest an increased sympathetic and decreased vagal modulations in both groups of patients.

This research attempted to study the effect of lipophilicity on the anticancer activity of N-substituted norcantharimide derivatives. Twenty-three compounds were synthesized and their cytotoxicities against five human cancer cell lines studied. The lipophilicity of each derivative was altered by its substituent, an alkyl, alkyloxy, terpenyl or terpenyloxy group at the N-position of norcantharimide. Further, among all synthesized derivatives studied, the compounds N-farnesyloxy-7-oxabicyclo[2.2.1]heptane-2,3-dicarboximide (9), and N-farnesyl-7-oxabicyclo[2.2.1]heptane-2,3-dicarboximide (18), have shown the highest cytotoxicity, anti-proliferative and apoptotic effect against human liver carcinoma HepG2 cell lines, yet displayed no significant cytotoxic effect on normal murine embryonic liver BNL CL.2 cells. Their overall performance led us to believe that these two compounds might be potential candidates for anticancer drugs development.

Arterial pulse wave velocity (PWV) is recognized as a convenient method to assess peripheral vascular stiffness. This study explored the clinical characteristics of hand PWV (hPWV) and hand pulse transit time (hPTT) in healthy adults (sixty males = 42.4 ± 13.9 yrs; sixty-four females = 42.8 ± 13.9 yrs) voluntarily participated in this study. The arterial pulse waveform and the anatomical distance from the radial styloid process to the tip of the middle finger of both hands were recorded in the sitting position. The hPWV was calculated as the traversed distance divided by hPTT between those two points. Male subjects showed significantly greater hPWV, systolic blood pressure, and pulse pressure than age-matched female subjects, while the hPTT was not significantly different between genders. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that gender is a common determinant of hPWV and hPTT, and that age and heart rate (HR) were negatively correlated with hPWV and hPTT, respectively. We conclude that male subjects have greater hPWV than female subjects. Ageing is associated with decreased hPWV, while increased HR is associated with a smaller hPTT. The hPWV and hPTT might be used as non-invasive indices to characterise the ageing and arterial stiffness of peripheral blood vessels.

The present study aimed to elucidate the effects of real-time versus slow-motion videos, as a function of time of day, on the acquisition of basketball plays. Fifty first-year sports science students (Mage = 18.82 y, SD = 0.49) were quasi-randomly allocated to either into 0.5 or 1.0 times normal video speed, attending morning (08:00-09:00 h) and late-afternoon (16:00-17:00 h) sessions. After measuring oral temperature (OT) and mood states (MS), participants observed a basketball system's evolution twice and completed two recall tests [game comprehension (GC) and game performance (GP) tests]. Afternoon sessions exacerbated higher OT, higher negative MS (e.g. anxiety and fatigue), and lower positive MS (i.e. vigor) compared to mornings (regardless of video speed). GC and GP were higher in the morning than in the afternoon, with real-time (p < 0.001, both) and slow-motion videos (p < 0.01 and p < 0.001, respectively). GC and GP were higher with slow-motion videos compared to real-time videos in morning and afternoon sessions (p < 0.01, both). The findings highlight the morning's superiority in the acquisition of motor knowledge from videos, due to mood disturbances and lower arousal levels. Additionally, the findings encourage teachers/coaches to communicate basketball plays through slow-motion videos, particularly in the morning.

This study aims to explore: (1) the validity of post-exercise ultra-short-term heart rate variability (HRVust) after two different bouts of repeated sprint ability test (RSA), and (2) the relationship between HRVust measure and RSA performance. Twenty adolescent male futsal players voluntarily participated in this study (age: 17.65 ± 1.81 years, body height: 170.88 ± 4.98 cm, body weight: 61.78 ± 4.67 kg). The participants performed a standard RSA test (RSAstandard) and an RSA test with a 10% decrement of the best sprint time test (RSA10%decrement) on two separate occasions within a week. On both occasions, a 5-min resting electrocardiography was administered pre- and post-RSA exercise protocols. The first 30-s (HRVust30s), 60-s (HRVust60s), and 60-120-s (HRVust1-2min) were extracted and used to compare with the standard of 5-min HRV recording (HRVcriterion). The natural logarithm (ln) of the standard deviation of normal-to-normal intervals (SDNN) and root mean square of successive normal-to-normal interval differences (RMSSD) HRV indices were utilised to establish intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC2,1), coefficient of variation (%CV), and Pearson product-moment correlation (r). Results revealed the ICC values of HRVust lnSDNN (RSAstandard = 0.77-0.88; RSA10%decrement = 0.41-0.71) and lnRMSSD (RSAstandard = 0.81-0.86; RSA10%decrement = 0.57-0.82). Furthermore, significantly positive correlations between best sprint time and post-exercise HRVust indices were found in lnSDNN (r = 0.47-0.62; p < 0.05) and lnRMSSD (r = 0.45; p < 0.05). Additionally, a large CV of lnSDNN (RSAstandard = 32%-45%; RSA10%decrement = 29%-39%), lnRMSSD (RSAstandard = 50%-66%; RSA10%decrement = 48%-52%), and ratio (RSAstandard = 45%-126%; RSA10%decrement = 27%-45%) was found after the RSA protocols. In conclusion, the number of bouts of RSA exercise potentially influences the agreement of post-exercise time-domain HRVust indices to standard HRV measure.

To alter its hydrophobicity, a series of compounds bearing 9-O-alkyl- or 9-O-terpenyl- substituted berberine were synthesized and evaluated for anticancer activity against human cancer HepG2 and HT29 cell lines. We found that the lipophilic substitute of 9-O-alkyl- and 9-O-terpenyl berberine derivatives plays a role in inhibiting the human cancer cell growth and its activity could be maximized with the optimized substitute type and chain length. Most strikingly, nonetheless, of the six compounds prepared, sample 8, a farnesyl 9-O-substituted berberine, showed either comparable or better cytotoxic activity against human cancer HepG2 cell line than that of berberine. Compound 8 had also shown a 104-fold antiproliferation activity in compare with berberine against human hepatoma HepG2 cell lines after 48 incubation hours. Further, in Hoechst 33258 and annexin V-FITC/PI staining analyses it induced apoptosis in HepG2 cells at lower concentration than that of berberine for 24h. Take all; farnesyl 9-O-substituted berberine could be a potential candidate for new anticancer drug development.

This study aimed to examine the effect of time of day (TOD) on the acquisition of basketball game actions from dynamic and static visualizations in physical education students (novice practitioners). Participants were quasi-randomly assigned to three treatments (static pictures, enriched static-pictures, or video). Morning and late-afternoon sessions were conducted, involving study phases and immediate-recall tests [game comprehension (GC) test and game performance (GP) test]. Oral temperature (OT) and mood states (MS) were also measured. Compared to the morning, the results revealed that afternoon resulted in higher OT, higher negative MS (e.g., anxiety and fatigue), and lower positive MS (i.e., vigor) in all experimental conditions. Moreover, the results showed that: (a) GC and GP decreased throughout the day (regardless of treatments), (b) GC and GP were better with enriched static-pictures (with arrows) than with static pictures, at both TOD, and (c) the video resulted in better GC and GP than the two static presentations, at both TOD. This study (a) highlights the morning's superiority in the acquisition of motor skills from dynamic and static visualizations, due to mood disturbances and lower arousal levels, and (b) encourages basketball teachers to use video modeling by experts, particularly in the morning, for explaining tactical skills.

Impaired cutaneous blood flow and sweating dysfunction might be among the earliest manifestations of diabetic autonomic neuropathy. This study assessed the pathophysiological basis underlying skin vasomotion changes and their relation with progressive sudomotor dysfunction and other autonomic and somatic measures in subclinical diabetic feet. Laser Doppler skin perfusion was assessed on 68 diabetic and 25 control subjects. The low-frequency vasomotion was transformed into three frequency intervals 0.0095-0.021, 0.021-0.052 and 0.052-0.145 Hz, respectively, for the investigation of endothelial, neurogenic and myogenic effects on microcirculatory alterations. The diabetic patients were categorized into three groups by increasing severity of sudomotor dysfunction: SSR+ (sympathetic skin response present; 27 patients), SSR- (SSR absent; 23 patients) and at-risk (SSR absent and of preulcerative cracked skin; 18 patients). All diabetic patients underwent nerve conduction and cardiovascular autonomic studies. The total spectral and endothelial activity was significantly decreased only in the at-risk group. The SSR- group had lower neurogenic vasomotion than the SSR+ group (p<0.05). Although no statistical difference was noted between any group in absolute myogenic spectrum, the SSR- group had higher normalized myogenic activity than the SSR+ group (p<0.01). The larger drop in orthostatic pressure was paralleled by a reduction in the myogenic amplitude (r=-0.33, p<0.01). These results suggested that early impairment of low-frequency flow motion correlated closely with the presence of sudomotor dysfunction of subclinical feet mainly in neurogenic and endothelial components. Impaired systemic vascular tone as manifested by orthostatic hypotension was proportional to the degree of myogenic dysregulation in diabetic patients.

INTRODUCTION: This study explored whether post-resuscitation status resembles severe sepsis in terms of autonomic nervous modulation by using heart rate variability (HRV) analysis. METHODS: Successfully resuscitated nontraumatic out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) adult patients in an emergency department were prospectively enrolled as the study group. Age- and sex-matched patients with severe sepsis with and without mechanical ventilation were included as positive controls, while sepsis patients and healthy volunteers were included as negative controls. The HRV measures obtained from 10-minute electrocardiogram were compared among 5 groups of subjects. RESULTS: Sixty-four successfully resuscitated OHCA patients were studied. There were no significant differences in all HRV measures (standard deviation of R-R intervals [SD(RR)], coefficient of variation of R-R intervals [CV(RR)], total power [TP], very-low-frequency component [VLF], low-frequency component [LF], high-frequency component [HF], normalized LF [LF%], normalized HF [HF%], and LF/HF) among the successfully resuscitated OHCA patients and severe sepsis patients with and without mechanical ventilation. Also, no significant differences in all HRV measures were found between nonsurvivors of OHCA group and nonsurvivors of severe sepsis group. In the nonsurvivors of OHCA group and severe sepsis group, the LF% and LF/HF were significantly lower, whereas the HF and HF% were significantly higher, as compared with the survivors of these 2 groups. CONCLUSIONS: The autonomic nervous modulation in the initial phase of OHCA patients resembles that of severe sepsis in that both groups of patients have decreased global HRV (TP, SD(RR), and CV(RR)), sympathovagal balance (LF% and LF/HF), and renin-angiotensin-aldosterone modulation (VLF), as compared to healthy subjects.
