OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of physiotherapeutic scoliosis-specific exercises (PSSE) on coronal, horizontal, and sagittal deformities of the spine in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) as well as how curve severity, intervention duration, and intervention type could modify these effects. DATA SOURCES: Data sources included PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Scopus databases, which were searched from their inception to September 5, 2023. STUDY SELECTION: Clinical controlled trials reporting the effects of PSSE on the Cobb angle, angle of trunk rotation (ATR), thoracic kyphosis (TK), or lumbar lordosis in patients with AIS aged 10-18 years. The experimental groups received PSSE; the control groups received standard care (observation or bracing) or conventional exercise such as core stabilization exercise, Pilates, proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation, and other nonspecific exercises. DATA EXTRACTION: Two researchers independently extracted key information from eligible studies. The quality of the studies was assessed using the Cochrane Handbook version 5.1.0 risk of bias assessment and the JBI Center for Evidence-Based Health Care (2016) of quasi-experimental research authenticity assessment tool. The level and certainty of evidence were rated according to the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation framework. We followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses statement. The protocol for this study was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42023404996). DATA SYNTHESIS: Twelve randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and 5 non-RCTs were meta-analyzed separately. The results indicated that compared with other nonsurgical management, PSSE significantly improved the Cobb angle, ATR, and TK, whereas the lumbar lordosis improvement was not statistically significant. Additionally, the efficacy of PSSE on Cobb angle was not significant in patients with curve severity ≥30° compared with controls. Nevertheless, the pooled effect of PSSE on Cobb angle was not significantly modified by intervention duration and intervention type and that on ATR was not significantly modified by intervention duration. The overall quality of evidence according to Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation was moderate to low for RCT and very low for non-RCT. CONCLUSIONS: PSSE exhibited positive benefits on the Cobb angle, ATR, and TK in patients with AIS compared with other nonsurgical therapies. In addition, the effectiveness of PSSE may be independent of intervention duration and intervention type but may be influenced by the initial Cobb angle. However, more RCTs are needed in the future to validate the efficacy of PSSE in moderate AIS with a mean Cobb angle ≥30°. Current evidence is limited by inconsistent control group interventions and small sample size of the studies.

To enhance the stability and light resistance of the yellow compounds in citrus pomace, our study successfully isolated and purified five compounds using ultrasonic-assisted extraction and column chromatography. The identified compounds include methyl linoleate, (2-ethyl)hexyl phthalate, 1,3-distearoyl-2-oleoylglycerol, 6,6-ditetradecyl-6,7-dihydroxazepin-2(3H)-one, and n-octadeca-17-enoic acid. The monomers extracted from fresh pomace, compounds 1 and 2, exhibit structural similarities to flavonoids and carotenoids. In contrast, the polymers isolated from fermented pomace, compounds 3, 4, and 5, share structural units with the fresh pomace compounds, indicating the transformation to stable polymeric forms. This suggests that the microbial fermentation process not only enhances the value of citrus pomace, but also provides a promising pathway for the synthesis of natural antioxidant yellow pigments with far-reaching theoretical and practical significance.

Inspired by the drawstring structure in daily life, here we report the development of a drawstring-mimetic supramolecular complex at the molecular scale. This complex consists of a rigid figure-of-eight macrocyclic host molecule and a flexible linear guest molecule which could interact through three-point non-covalent binding to form a highly selective and efficient host-guest assembly. The complex not only resembles the drawstring structure, but also mimics the properties of a drawstring with regard to deformations under external forces. The supramolecular drawstring can be utilized as an interlocked crosslinker for poly(methyl acrylate), and the corresponding polymer samples exhibit comprehensive enhancement of macroscopic mechanical performance including stiffness, strength, and toughness.

With the prosperity of the development of carbon nanorings, certain topologically or functionally unique units-embedded carbon nanorings have sprung up in the past decade. Herein, we report the facile and efficient synthesis of three cyclooctatetraene-embedded carbon nanorings (COTCNRs) that contain three (COTCNR1 and COTCNR2) and four (COTCNR3) COT units in a one-pot Yamamoto coupling. These nanorings feature hoop-shaped segments of Gyroid (G-), Diamond (D-), and Primitive (P-) type carbon schwarzites. The conformations of the trimeric nanorings COTCNR1 and COTCNR2 are shape-persistent, whereas the tetrameric COTCNR3 possesses a flexible carbon skeleton which undergoes conformational changes upon forming host-guest complexes with fullerenes (C60 and C70), whose co-crystals may potentially serve as fullerene-based semiconducting supramolecular wires with electrical conductivities on the order of 10-7 S cm-1 (for C60⊂COTCNR3) and 10-8 S cm-1 (for C70⊂COTCNR3) under ambient conditions. This research not only describes highly efficient one-step syntheses of three cyclooctatetraene-embedded carbon nanorings which feature hoop-shaped segments of distinctive topological carbon schwarzites, but also demonstrates the potential application in electronics of the one-dimensional fullerene arrays secured by COTCNR3.

BACKGROUND: Medical disputes remain a global public health problem. However, an analysis of the characteristics and risk factors affecting the judgment results of medical damage liability disputes in second-instance and retrial cases in China has yet to be conducted. METHODS: We conducted a systematic search and evaluation of second-instance and retrial cases among all medical damage liability disputes in China Judgments Online; SPSS 22.0 was used for the statistical analysis. A χ2 test or likelihood ratio Chi-square test was used to compare differences between groups, and multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to determine independent risk factors that could affect the judgment results of medical disputes. RESULTS: We included 3172 second-instance and retrial cases among all medical damage liability disputes in the analysis. The results showed that 48.04% of cases were unilateral appeals by the patient, and medical institutions were responsible for providing compensation in 80.64% of these cases. Cases involving compensation ranged from Chinese Yuan (CNY) 100 000 to 500 000 ranked first (40.95%); 21.66% were non-compensation cases. Cases involving mental damage compensation of less than CNY 20 000 accounted for 39.03%. Violations of medical treatment and nursing routines accounted for 64.25% of all cases. In addition, re-identification in 54.59% of cases changed the initial appraisal opinion. Independent risk factors for medical personnel to lose a lawsuit in a multivariate logistic regression model included appeal originator [patient side: OR = 18.809 (95% CI 11.854-29.845); both sides: OR = 22.168 (95% CI 12.249-40.117)], change of the original verdict (OR = 5.936, 95% CI 3.875-9.095), judicial identification (OR = 6.395, 95% CI 4.818-8.487), violations of medical treatment and nursing routines (OR = 8.783, 95% CI 6.658-11.588), and non-standard medical document writing (OR = 8.500, 95% CI 4.805-15.037). CONCLUSION: Our study clarifies the characteristics of second-instance and retrial cases among all medical damage liability disputes in China from multiple perspectives and identifies the independent risk factors for medical personnel losing a lawsuit. This study could help medical institutions prevent and reduce medical disputes, at the same time, it could be helpful for medical institutions to provide better medical treatment and nursing services for patients.

Purpose: There have been many studies in the operative management of pyogenic spondylodiscitis with foreign materials. However, it still remains an issue of debate on whether the allografts may be used in pyogenic spondylodiscitis. This study sought to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of PEEK cages and the cadaveric allograft in transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) for treating lumbar pyogenic spondylodiscitis. Methods: From January 2012 to December 2019, 56 patients underwent surgery for lumbar pyogenic spondylodiscitis. The posterior debridement of all patients and their fusion with allografts, local bone grafts, and bone chip cages were performed before posterior pedicle screw fusion. An assessment of the residual pain, the grade of neurological injury, and the resolution of infection was conducted on 39 patients. The clinical outcome was evaluated using a visual analog scale (VAS) and the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), and neurological outcomes were appraised based on Frankel grades. The radiological outcomes were evaluated via focal lordosis, lumbar lordosis, and the state of the fusion. Results: Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis were the most common causative organisms. The mean preoperative focal lordosis was -1.2° (-11.4° to 5.7°), and the mean postoperative focal lordosis increased to 10.3° (4.3°-17.2°). At the final follow-up, there were five cases with subsidence of the cage, no case of recurrence, and no case with cage and screw loosening or migration. The mean preoperative VAS and ODI scores were 8.9 and 74.6%, respectively, and improvements in VAS and ODI were 6.6 ± 2.2 and 50.4 ± 21.3%, respectively. The Frankel grade D was found in 10 patients and grade C in 7. Following the final follow-up, only one patient improved from Frankel grade C to grade D while the others recovered completely. Conclusion: The PEEK cage and cadaveric allograft combined with local bone grafts is a safe and effective choice for intervertebral fusion and restoring sagittal alignment without increased incidence of relapse for treating lumbar pyogenic spondylodiscitis.

In this study, polysaccharide-rich Nymphaea hybrid extracts (NHE) were obtained using the ultrasound-assisted cellulase extraction (UCE) method optimized by response surface methodology (RSM). The structural properties and thermal stability of NHE were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and thermogravimetry-derivative thermogravimetry (TG-DTG) analysis, respectively. Moreover, the bioactivities of NHE, including the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, whitening and scratch healing activities were evaluated by different in vitro assays. NHE conveyed a good ability to scavenge against the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radicals and inhibit the hyaluronidase activity. NHE can effectively protect the HaCaT cells against oxidative damage by inhibiting the intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in the H2O2 stimulation assays and promoting the proliferation and migration in the scratch assays. In addition, NHE was proven to inhibit melanin production in B16 cells. Collectively, the above results seem to be the evidence needed to promote the potential of NHE to be regarded as a new functional raw material in the cosmetics or food industries.

Traditional membranes are inefficient in treating highly toxic organic pollutants and oily wastewater in harsh environments, which is difficult to meet the growing demand for green development. Herein, the Co(OH)2@stearic acid nanocellulose-based membrane was prepared by depositing Co(OH)2 on the nanocellulose-based membrane (NBM) through chemical soaking method, which enables efficient oil/water mixtures separation and degradation of pollutants by photocatalysis in harsh environments. The Co(OH)2@stearic acid nanocellulose-based membrane (Co(OH)2@stearic acid NBM) shows good photocatalytic degradation performance for methylene blue pollutants in harsh environment, and has significant degradation rate (93.66%). At the same time, the Co(OH)2@stearic acid NBM with superhydrophobicity and superoleophilicity also exhibits respectable oil/water mixtures separation performance (n-Hexane, dimethyl carbonate, chloroform and toluene) under harsh environment (strong acid/strong alkali), which has an excellent oil-water mixtures separation flux of 87 L·m-2·h-1 (n-Hexane/water) and oil-water mixture separation efficiency of over 93% (n-Hexane/water). In addition, this robust Co(OH)2@stearic acid NBM shows good self-cleaning and recycling performance. Even though seven oil-water separation tests have been carried out under harsh environment, it can still maintain respectable oil-water mixture separation rate and flux. The multifunctional membrane has excellent resistance to harsh environments, oil-water separation and pollutant degradation can be performed even in harsh environments, which provides a convenient way to treat sewage under harsh conditions efficiently and has great potential in practical application.

The self-exothermic in early stage of thermal runaway (TR) is blasting-fuse for Li-ion battery safety issues. The exothermic reaction between lithiated graphite (LiCx ) and electrolyte accounts for onset of this behavior. However, preventing the deleterious reaction still encounters hurdles. Here, we manage to inhibit this reaction by passivating LiCx in real time via targeted repair of SEI. It is shown that 1,3,5-trimethyl-1,3,5-tris(3,3,3-trifluoropropyl)cyclotrisiloxane (D3 F) can be triggered by LiCx to undergo ring-opening polymerization at elevated temperature, so as to targeted repair of fractured SEI. Due to the high thermal stability of polymerized D3 F, exothermic reaction between LiCx and electrolyte is inhibited. As a result, the self-exothermic and TR trigger temperatures of pouch cell are increased from 159.6 and 194.2 °C to 300.5 and 329.7 °C. This work opens up a new avenue for designing functional additives to block initial exothermal reaction and inhibit TR in early stage.

PURPOSE: To specifically diagnose malignant tumors in DWI using the human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) promoter-driven AQP1 expression. METHODS: The human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) promoter-driven AQP1 gene overexpression lentivirus system (hTERT-AQP1) and cytomegalovirus (CMV) promoter-driven AQP1 gene overexpression lentivirus system (CMV-AQP1) were prepared, and transduced into telomerase-positive and -negative cells. The AQP1 expression and DWI signal intensity (SI) change in transduced cells were analyzed. Balb/C nude mice subcutaneous xenograft models derived from lentivirus-transduced telomerase-positive and -negative cells were used to evaluate AQP1 expression and DWI SI change in vivo. We further established another group of subcutaneous xenograft model using pristine telomerase-positive and -negative cells, followed by injecting the lentiviral vectors intratumorally or intravenously, to determine the malignant tumor-targeted imaging of hTERT-AQP1. RESULTS: The hTERT-AQP1 and CMV-AQP1 were successfully prepared. After transduction, hTERT-AQP1 could induce the specific overexpression of AQP1 in telomerase-positive cells. Compared with untransduced cells, all CMV-AQP1-pretransduced cells and hTERT-AQP1-pretransduced telomerase-positive cells showed decreased SI and increased apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) in DWI, while hTERT-AQP1-pretransduced telomerase-negative cells showed no obvious SI and ADC change. Correspondingly, hTERT-AQP1-transduced telomerase-positive tumors and CMV-AQP1-transduced telomerase-positive and -negative tumors showed decreased DWI SI and increased ADC, while hTERT-AQP1-transduced telomerase-negative tumor had no SI and ADC changes. After intratumoral or intravenous injection, CMV-AQP1 could upregulate AQP1 expression and induce DWI SI and ADC alteration in both telomerase-positive and -negative tumors, while hTERT-AQP1 worked in telomerase-positive tumors specifically. CONCLUSION: Cancers can be specifically visualized based on the DWI signal alteration which triggered by hTERT-AQP1 lentivirus system that combined AQP1 gene and hTERT promoter.

To improve the naringinase production of Aspergillus tubingensis UA13, shorten the fermentation period, and verify its industrial application value, naringinase production conditions were optimized, and 5 L scale-up study in stirred tank bioreactor was carried out. Parameters, including carbon, nitrogen sources and inducer, optimal seed age, inoculum amount, temperature and pH, were adjusted and optimized in shaking flask. Keeping pH at the optimal value 6 in bioreactor, dissolved oxygen was monitored during the fermentation and the optimal stirring rate was investigated. In 5 L scale-up study, the highest naringinase activity was 72.62 U/mL, which was 1.75 times higher than that (41.52 U/mL) in shaking flask and the fermentation period was shortened by 24 h.

In this study, ultrasonic-assisted cellulase extraction (UCE) was applied to extract flavonoids and polyphenols from the Nymphaea hybrid flower. The extraction conditions were optimized using the response surface method (RSM) coupled with a Box-Behnken design. The crude extract of Nymphaea hybrid (NHE) was further purified using AB-8 macroporous resins, and the purified extract (NHEP) was characterized by FTIR and HPLC. In vitro activity determination by chemical method showed that NHEP displayed strong free radical scavenging abilities against the DPPH and ABTS radicals, good reduction power, and hyaluronidase inhibition. The cell viability by CCK-8 assays showed that NHEP had no significant cytotoxicity for B16 and HaCaT cells when the concentration was below 100 µg/mL and 120 µg/mL, respectively. NHEP with a concentration of 20-160 µg/mL can more effectively reduce the ROS level in H2O2 damaged HaCaT cells compared with 10 µg/mL of VC. The 40 µg/mL of NHEP had similar activity against intracellular melanin production in the B16 melanoma cells compared with 20 µg/mL Kojic acid. Good activities of antioxidation, whitening and protective effect against H2O2-induced oxidative damage promote the potential for NHEP as a functional raw material in the field of cosmetics and medicine.

Ferroptosis is a necrotic form of regulated cell death that was associated with lipid peroxidation and free iron-mediated Fenton reactions. It has been reported that iron deficiency had been implicated in the pathogenesis of intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD) by activating apoptosis. However, the role of ferroptosis in the process of IVDD has not been illuminated. Here, we demonstrate the involvement of ferroptosis in IVDD pathogenesis. Our in vitro models show the changes in protein levels of ferroptosis marker and enhanced lipid peroxidation level during oxidative stress. Safranin O staining, hematoxylin-eosin staining, and immunohistochemical were used to assess the IVDD after 8 weeks of surgical procedure in vivo. Treatment with ferrostatin-1, deferoxamine, and RSL3 demonstrate the role of ferroptosis in tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP)-treated annulus fibrosus cells (AFCs) and nucleus pulposus cells (NPCs). Ferritinophagy, nuclear receptor coactivator 4 (NCOA4)-mediated ferritin selective autophagy, is originated during the process of ferroptosis in response to TBHP treatment. Knockdown and overexpression NCOA4 further prove TBHP may induce ferroptosis of AFCs and NPCs in an autophagy-dependent way. These findings support a role for oxidative stress-induced ferroptosis in the pathogenesis of IVDD.

High dose and long-term steroid treatment can alter antioxidative ability and decrease the viability and function of osteoblasts, leading to osteoporosis and osteonecrosis. Ferroptosis, a new type of cell death characterized by excessive lipid peroxidation due to the downregulation of GPX4 and system Xc- , is involved in glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis. Endothelial cell-secreted exosomes (EC-Exos) are important mediators of cell-to-cell communication and are involved in many physiological and pathological processes. However, the effect of EC-Exos on osteoblasts exposed to glucocorticoids has not been reported. Here, we explored the role of EC-Exos in glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis. In vivo and in vitro experiments indicated that EC-Exos reversed the glucocorticoid-induced osteogenic inhibition of osteoblasts by inhibiting ferritinophagy-dependent ferroptosis.

Inflammation plays a critical role in the development of atherosclerosis (AS), which has been identified as a major predisposing factor for stroke. Macrophages and VSMCs are associated with plaque formation and progression. Macrophages can dynamically change into two main functional phenotypes, namely M1 and M2, they can produce either pro-inflammatory or anti-inflammatory factors which may affect the outcome of inflammation. As a member of CTRPs family, CTRP9 has been reported play important protective roles in the cardiovascular system. However, whether CTRP9 can regulate macrophage activation status in inflammatory responses and have effect on VSMCs behaviors in co-culture system have not been fully investigated. In the present study, using peritoneal macrophages treated with CTRP9, we found that CTRP9 facilitated macrophages towards M1 phenotype, promoted TNF-α secretion and MMPs expression. CTRP9 showed synergistic effect with LPS in inducing M1 macrophages. In macrophages-VSMCs co-culture system, apoptosis and down-regulated proliferation of VSMCs were accelerated with CTRP9-treated macrophages. Then we attempted to explore the underlying molecular mechanisms of CTRP9 resulting in M1 activation. The c-Jun NH2-terminal kinases (JNK) are members of the mitogen activated protein kinases (MAPK) family, plays a central role in the cell stress response, with outcomes ranging from cell death to cell proliferation and survival. We found JNK expression was upregulated following CTRP9 stimulation, and inhibiting JNK phosphorylation level was associated with decreased expression of M1 markers and TNF-α concentration. Moreover, VSMCs apoptosis were ameliorated after inhibition of JNK. These results suggested that CTRP9 may promote macrophage towards M1 activation status through JNK signaling pathway activation.

In this study, the lactobacillus fermentation process of pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) peel and Schisandra chinensis (Turcz.) Baill (PP&SC) was optimized by using the response surface method (RSM) coupled with a Box-Behnken design. The optimum fermentation condition with the maximal yield of ellagic acid (99.49 ± 0.47 mg/g) was as follows: 1:1 (w:w) ratio of pomegranate peel to Schisandra chinensis, 1% (v:v) of strains with a 1:1 (v:v) ratio of Lactobacillus Plantarum to Streptococcus Thermophilus, a 37 °C fermentation temperature, 33 h of fermentation time, 1:20 (g:mL) of a solid-liquid ratio and 3 g/100 mL of a glucose dosage. Under these conditions, the achieved fermentation broth (FB) showed stronger free radical scavenging abilities than the water extract (WE) against the ABTS+, DPPH, OH- and O2- radicals. The cytotoxicity and the protective effect of FB on the intracellular ROS level in HaCaT cells were further detected by the Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) assay. The results showed that FB had no significant cytotoxicity toward HaCaT cells when its content was no more than 8 mg/mL. The FB with a concentration of 8 mg/mL had a good protective effect against oxidative damage, which can effectively reduce the ROS level to 125.94% ± 13.46% (p < 0.001) compared with 294.49% ± 11.54% of the control group in H2O2-damaged HaCaT cells. The outstanding antioxidant ability and protective effect against H2O2-induced oxidative damage in HaCaT cells promote the potential for the FB of PP&SC as a functional raw material of cosmetics.

OBJECTIVE: To study the efficacy and safety of intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) in children with high-risk neuroblastoma (NB). METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on the medical data of 24 children with high-risk NB who were diagnosed and treated with IMRT in the Department of Hematology and Oncology, Hunan Provincial People's Hospital, from April 2018 to December 2020. The medical data included age, radiotherapy dose, times of radiotherapy, laboratory examination results, adverse reactions, and survival. RESULTS: All 24 children (14 boys and 10 girls) received IMRT, with a mean age of (65±23) months and a median age of 59 months. The primary tumor was located in the abdomen in 23 children and 1 child had primary tumor in the mediastinum. The median age was 41.5 months at the time of radiotherapy. The radiation dose of radiotherapy ranged from 14.4 to 36.0 Gy, with a mean dose of (22±3) Gy and a daily dose of 1.8-2.0 Gy. The radiotherapy was performed for a total number of 8-20 times, with a mean number of 11.9 times. Among these children, 6 received radiotherapy for the residual or metastatic lesion. Of all the 23 children, 3 experienced cough, 2 experienced diarrhea, and 1 experienced vomiting during radiotherapy. At 2 weeks after radiotherapy, serum creatinine ranged from 2.3 to 70.1 µmol/L and alanine aminotransferase ranged from 9.1 to 65.3 µ/L. Ten children experienced grade Ⅲ bone marrow suppression and 2 experienced grade Ⅳ bone marrow suppression 1 to 2 weeks after radiotherapy. Four children experienced grade Ⅲ bone marrow suppression and 1 experienced grade Ⅳ bone marrow suppression 3 to 4 weeks after radiotherapy. During a median follow-up time of 13.5 months, 23 children (96%) achieved stable disease and 1 died. Up to the follow-up date, second malignant tumor or abnormal organ function was not observed. CONCLUSIONS: IMRT can improve the local control rate of NB. IMRT appears to be safe in the treatment of children with NB.

The C1q tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-related proteins 9 (CTRP9), an adipocyte-derived cytokine, affects a number of physiological processes, including immune function and inflammation. We investigated whether CTRP9 affects the expression of inflammation-related genes in Raw 264.7 and peritoneal macrophages. The CTRP9-induced expression of iNOS increased in a time- and dose-dependent manner. LPS and CTRP9 promote the expression of iNOS jointly in Raw 264.7 and peritoneal macrophages. CTRP9 induced the phosphorylation of JAK2 and STAT3 in Raw 264.7 and peritoneal macrophages. VX509 (JAK2 inhibitor) reduced the CTRP9-induced iNOS protein production. In addition, the CTRP9-induced phosphorylation of JAK2 and STAT3 was dramatically reduced by VX509. Collectively, these results suggest that JAK2/STAT3 signaling is involved in the CTRP9-induced expression of iNOS.

Although highly useful in supramolecular chemistry, pillararenes lack a fluorophore in their skeleton. Here we present BowtieArene, a novel fluorescent dual macrocycle, featuring a central tetraphenylethylene-derived fluorophore and two pillar-like, pentagon-shaped cavities which are comparable to pillar[5]arene. This concisely prepared, figure-of-eight molecule exhibits vapor absorption and host-guest capabilities, as well as intriguing switchable fluorescence. The fluorochromism of BowtieArene can be triggered by multiple external stimuli including solvent, vapor, and mechanical force, with excellent reversibility and stability. Experimental and theoretical evidence indicate that the fluorochromism should be closely related to molecular packing.

A sandwich-type electrochemical aptasensor is described for detecting the carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) with high sensitivity and accuracy. Two kinds of nanomaterials are used. The first was obtained by modifying gold nanoparticles with reduced graphene oxide and hemin (Hemin-rGO-AuNPs). The second consists of horseradish peroxidase-modified organic-inorganic hybrid nanoflowers linked to gold nanoparticles to obtain an architecture of type HRP-Cu3(PO4)2-HNF-AuNPs). These serve as carriers for two aptamers (apt1 and apt2) against CEA. Simultaneously, they were used to catalyze the precipitation reaction between 4-chloro-1-naphthol(4-CN) and H2O2. A sandwich-type assay linked to enzyme inhibition amplification was established for electrochemical determination of CEA. Under optimal experimental conditions and by using differential pulse voltammetry, the response peak currents (best measured at -0.34 V vs. Ag/AgCl) increases linearly with the logarithm of the CEA concentration in the range between 100 fg mL-1 and 100 ng mL-1. The detection limit is as low as 29 fg mL-1.
