RESUMEN

High electrochemical reversibility is required for the application of high-energy-density lithium (Li) metal batteries; however, inactive Li formation and SEI (solid electrolyte interface)-instability-induced electrolyte consumption cause low Coulombic efficiency (CE). The prior interfacial chemical designs in terms of alloying kinetics have been used to enhance the CE of Li metal anode; however, the role of its redox chemistry at heterointerfaces remains a mystery. Herein, the relationship between heterointerfacial redox chemistry and electrochemical transformation reversibility is investigated. It is demonstrated that the lower redox potential at heterointerface contributes to higher CE, and this enhancement in CE is primarily due to the regulation of redox chemistry to Li deposition behavior rather than the formation of SEI films. Low oxidation potential facilitates the formation of the surface with the highly electrochemical binding feature after Li stripping, and low reduction potential can maintain binding ability well during subsequent Li plating, both of which homogenize Li deposition and thus optimize CE. In particular, Mg hetero-metal with ultra-low redox potential enables Li metal anode with significantly improved CE (99.6%) and stable cycle life for 700 cycles at 3.0 mA cm-2. This work provides insight into the heterointerfacial design principle of next-generation negative electrodes for highly reversible metal batteries.

RESUMEN

1T-MoS2 has become an ideal anode for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). However, the metastable feature of 1T-MoS2 makes it difficult to directly synthesize under normal conditions. In addition, it easily transforms into 2H phase via restacking, resulting in inferior electrochemical performance. Herein, the electron configuration of Mo 4d orbitals is modulated and the stable 1T-MoS2 is constructed by nickel (Ni) introduction (1T-Ni-MoS2). The original electron configuration of Mo 4d orbitals is changed via the electron injection by Ni, which triggers the phase transition from 2H to 1T phase, thus improving the electrical conductivity and accelerating the redox kinetics of the material. Consequently, 1T-Ni-MoS2 exhibits superior rate capability (266.8 mAh g-1 at 10 A g-1) and excellent cycle life (358.7 mAh g-1 at 1 A g-1 after 350 cycles). In addition, the assembled Na3V2(PO4)3/C||1T-Ni-MoS2 full cells deliver excellent electrochemical properties and show great prospects in energy storage devices.

RESUMEN

Cardiac fibrosis is an essential pathological process in pressure overload (PO)-induced heart failure. Recently, myocyte-fibroblast communication is proven to be critical in heart failure, in which, pathological growth of cardiomyocytes (CMs) may promote fibrosis via miRNAs-containing exosomes (Exos). Peli1 regulates the activation of NF-κB and AP-1, which has been demonstrated to engage in miRNA transcription in cardiomyocytes. Therefore, we hypothesized that Peli1 in CMs regulates the activation of cardiac fibroblasts (CFs) through an exosomal miRNA-mediated paracrine mechanism, thereby promoting cardiac fibrosis. We found that CM-conditional deletion of Peli1 improved PO-induced cardiac fibrosis. Moreover, Exos from mechanical stretch (MS)-induced WT CMs (WT MS-Exos) promote activation of CFs, Peli1-/- MS-Exos reversed it. Furthermore, miRNA microarray and qPCR analysis showed that miR-494-3p was increased in WT MS-Exos while being down regulated in Peli1-/- MS-Exos. Mechanistically, Peli1 promoted miR-494-3p expression via NF-κB/AP-1 in CMs, and then miR-494-3p induced CFs activation by inhibiting PTEN and amplifying the phosphorylation of AKT, SMAD2/3, and ERK. Collectively, our study suggests that CMs Peli1 contributes to myocardial fibrosis via CMs-derived miR-494-3p-enriched exosomes under PO, and provides a potential exosomal miRNA-based therapy for cardiac fibrosis.

RESUMEN

Despite the increasing prevalence of atmospheric nanoplastics (NPs), there remains limited research on their phytotoxicity, foliar absorption, and translocation in plants. In this study, we aimed to fill this knowledge gap by investigating the physiological effects of tomato leaves exposed to differently charged NPs and foliar absorption and translocation of NPs. We found that positively charged NPs caused more pronounced physiological effects, including growth inhibition, increased antioxidant enzyme activity, and altered gene expression and metabolite composition and even significantly changed the structure and composition of the phyllosphere microbial community. Also, differently charged NPs exhibited differential foliar absorption and translocation, with the positively charged NPs penetrating more into the leaves and dispersing uniformly within the mesophyll cells. Additionally, NPs absorbed by the leaves were able to translocate to the roots. These findings provide important insights into the interactions between atmospheric NPs and crop plants and demonstrate that NPs' accumulation in crops could negatively impact agricultural production and food safety.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Traumatic coronoid deficiency with persistent elbow instability is a challenging condition. Autologous bone graft reconstruction is often associated with a range of additional clinical problems and the outcome is often unpredictable. The purpose of this study was to design a prosthetic device that can reconstruct coronoid deficiency of any height and to evaluate its mechanical properties using finite element analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A customized coronoid prosthesis was designed based on image registration, automatic measurement, and computer-aided design. After pilot study and sample size calculation, image data collected from 6 patients who underwent bilateral complete upper extremity CT scans were reconstructed. The test was divided into 3 groups: coronoid intact, prosthesis and autograft. Regan-Morrey type II and autologous olecranon osteotomy models were established. The prosthesis and autogenous olecranon were assembled to the coronoid base. Stress was applied axially along the proximal humeral diaphysis and implant micromotion and contact mechanics of the humeroulnar joint were measured at 30°, 45°, 60° and 90° of joint flexion respectively. RESULTS: At all flexion angles, the maximum stress on the coronoid articular surface was significantly reduced in the prosthesis and autograft groups, with the reduction being more significant in the latter (P < .001). With increasing flexion, the maximum stress at the coronoid articular surface increased significantly after autograft reconstruction (7.2 to 68 MPa, P < .001), whereas the humeroulnar joint obtained a similar contact mechanics pattern to that of the control group after prosthetic reconstruction. As the flexion angle increased, the relative micromotion of both the prosthesis and autograft increased significantly (0.5-1.6 vs. 0.2-1.2, Pmeasure time < 0.001, Pgroups < 0.001). Contact pressure and center-of-force paths of the humeroulnar joint experience abrupt stress changes at approximately 60° of flexion. CONCLUSION: The contact stress pattern in the humeroulnar joint is similar in prosthesis and intact coronoid groups. Autograft reconstruction increases contact stresses at the articular surface and alters the joint center-of-force path. The "stress surge phenomenon" in the humeroulnar joint surface before and after 60° of flexion may be one of the mechanisms of traumatic elbow degeneration.

RESUMEN

PURPOS: To evaluate the clinical efficacy of the Medial Sustain Nail (MSN) for medial comminuted trochanteric fractures fixation in comparison to Proximal Femoral Nail Antirotation (PFNA) through a clinical study. METHODS: A non-inferiority randomized controlled trial was conducted at a single centre between July 2019 and July 2020. Fifty patients diagnosed comminuted trochanteric fractures were randomly assigned to either the MSN group (n = 25) or the PFNA group (n = 25). A total of forty-three patients were included in the final study analysis. The primary outcome measure was Short Form 36 health surgery physical component summary (SF-36 PCS) score. Secondary outcomes included the Oxford Hip Scores (OHS), weight bearing, complication relate to implant and so on. This study was not blined to surgeons, but to patients and data analysts. RESULTS: The MSN demonstrated significantly better functional outcomes as measured by SF-36 PCS and OHS at six months postoperative compared to PFNA (p < 0.05). Union of fractures in the MSN group reached 90.9% at three months after surgery, whereas the PFNA group achieved a union rate of 57.1% (p < 0.05). Furthermore, weight-bearing time of MSN group was earlier than PFNA group (p < 0.05). Additionally, complications related to implant usage were more prevalent in the PFNA group (33.3%) compared to the MSN group (4.5%) (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: MSN exhibited superior quality of life outcomes compared to PFNA at six months postoperative. This indicates that MSN effectively reconstructs medial femoral support in patients with comminuted trochanteric fractures, which facilitates early weight-bearing and accelerates the recovery process. RESUMEN

Zinc metal batteries are strongly hindered by water corrosion, as solvated zinc ions would bring the active water molecules to the electrode/electrolyte interface constantly. Herein, we report a sacrificial solvation shell to repel active water molecules from the electrode/electrolyte interface and assist in forming a fluoride-rich, organic-inorganic gradient solid electrolyte interface (SEI) layer. The simultaneous sacrificial process of methanol and Zn(CF3SO3)2 results in the gradient SEI layer with an organic-rich surface (CH2OC- and C5 product) and an inorganic-rich (ZnF2) bottom, which combines the merits of fast ion diffusion and high flexibility. As a result, the methanol additive enables corrosion-free zinc stripping/plating on copper foils for 300 cycles with an average coulombic efficiency of 99.5%, a record high cumulative plating capacity of 10 A h/cm2 at 40 mA/cm2 in Zn/Zn symmetrical batteries. More importantly, at an ultralow N/P ratio of 2, the practical VO2//20 µm thick Zn plate full batteries with a high areal capacity of 4.7 mAh/cm2 stably operate for over 250 cycles, establishing their promising application for grid-scale energy storage devices. Furthermore, directly utilizing the 20 µm thick Zn for the commercial-level areal capacity (4.7 mAh/cm2) full zinc battery in our work would simplify the manufacturing process and boost the development of the commercial zinc battery for stationary storage.

RESUMEN

Pyrolysis of oily sludge (OS) is a feasible technology to match the principle of reduction and recycling; however, it is difficult to confirm the feasible environmental destination and meet the corresponding requirements. Therefore, an integrated strategy of biochar-assisted catalytic pyrolysis (BCP) of OS and residue utilization for soil reclamation is investigated in this study. During the catalytic pyrolysis process, biochar as a catalyst intensifies the removal of recalcitrant petroleum hydrocarbons at the expense of liquid product yield. Concurrently, biochar as an adsorbent can inhibit the release of micromolecular gaseous pollutants (e.g. HCN, H2S, and HCl) and stabilize heavy metals. Due to the assistance of biochar, pyrolysis reactions of OS are more likely to occur and require a lower temperature to achieve the same situation. During the soil reclamation process, the obtained residue as a soil amendment can not only provide a carbon source and mineral nutrients but can also improve the abundance and diversity of microbial communities. Thus, it facilitates the plant germination and the secondary removal of petroleum hydrocarbons. The integrated strategy of BCP of OS and residue utilization for soil reclamation is a promising management strategy, which is expected to realize the coordinated and benign disposal of more than one waste.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: The proportion of older people with dementia in China is gradually increasing with the increase in the aging population over recent years. Hypertension and diabetes are common non-communicable diseases among rural populations in China. However, it remains unclear whether these conditions affect the occurrence and development of cognitive impairment as there is limited research on cognitive status and its risk factors among residents of rural areas. METHODS: A multi-stage stratified cluster random sampling method was used to select 5400 participants from rural permanent residents. A self-designed structured questionnaire was used to investigate demographic data of the participants. Cognitive function was assessed using the Montreal Cognitive Function Assessment Scale (MoCA). The results were analyzed using chi-square test, ANOVA and multiple linear regression analysis. RESULTS: A total of 5028 participants returned the survey, giving a response rate of 93.1%. Higher education (odds ratio (OR) = 3.2, 95% confidence interval (CI) 2.87-3.54, p < 0.001), higher income (OR = 1.61, 95% CI 1.16-2.07, p < 0.001), and dietary control (OR = 0.66, 95%CI 0.34-0.98, p < 0.001) were protective factors. A visual representation of the relationship between annual income and MoCA score showed an inverted U-curve, the group with an annual income of 6000-7999 RMB had a maximum OR of 1.93 (95%CI 0.12-2.74, p < 0.001). While difficulty in maintaining sleep were risk factors for cognitive impairment (OR = -2.28, 95% CI-4.18-0.39, p = 0.018). CONCLUSIONS: Participants with middle incomes had better cognitive status than those with the highest incomes. Higher education, proper diet control and good sleep are beneficial to the cognitive status of residents in rural areas.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: In 2022, Omicron outbreaks occurred at multiple sites in China. It is of great importance to track the incidence trends and transmission dynamics of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) to guide further interventions. METHODS: Given the population size, economic level and transport level similarities, two groups of outbreaks (Shanghai vs. Chengdu and Sanya vs. Beihai) were selected for analysis. We developed the SEAIQRD, ARIMA, and LSTM models to seek optimal modeling techniques for waves associated with the Omicron variant regarding data predictive performance and mechanism transmission dynamics, respectively. In addition, we quantitatively modeled the impacts of different combinations of more stringent interventions on the course of the epidemic through scenario analyses. RESULTS: The best-performing LSTM model showed better prediction accuracy than the best-performing SEAIQRD and ARIMA models in most cases studied. The SEAIQRD model had an absolute advantage in exploring the transmission dynamics of the outbreaks. Regardless of the time to inflection point or the time to Rt curve below 1.0, Shanghai was later than Chengdu (day 46 vs. day 12/day 54 vs. day 14), and Sanya was later than Beihai (day 16 vs. day 12/day 20 vs. day 16). Regardless of the number of peak cases or the cumulative number of infections, Shanghai was higher than Chengdu (34,350 vs. 188/623,870 vs. 2,181), and Sanya was higher than Beihai (1,105 vs. 203/16,289 vs. 3,184). Scenario analyses suggested that upgrading control level in advance, while increasing the index decline rate and quarantine rate, were of great significance for shortening the time to peak and Rt below 1.0, as well as reducing the number of peak cases and final affected population. CONCLUSIONS: The LSTM model has great potential for predicting the prevalence of Omicron outbreaks, whereas the SEAIQRD model is highly effective in revealing their internal transmission mechanisms. We recommended the use of joint interventions to contain the spread of the virus.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To perform quantitative measurements of the anatomic morphology of the proximal ulna and establish the morphologic references based on Chinese for the surgical protocol and implant design. METHODS: The computed tomography data of 156 upper extremities were involved in this study. The ulna model was reconstructed in Mimics. Ten distance and 6 angle parameters were measured by 4 independent investigators with a new quantitative measurement method. The intraclass correlation coefficient was used to evaluate the measuring reliability. Gender and side differences of measured parameters were evaluated. RESULTS: Measurements showed a mean coronoid height of 15 mm, which was 42% of ulnar height with gender-specific differences (mean 16 mm in men and 14 mm in women, P < 0.001). A mean unsupported anteromedial facet width of 8 mm was 61% of the coronoid anteromedial facet. A larger opening angle correlates to a larger olecranon-diaphysis angle (P < 0.001) and larger coronoid height (P = 0.001). A mean proximal ulna dorsal angulation of 4.7° is present in 80% of models at an average of 52 mm distal to olecranon tip. The average proximal ulna varus angulation was 16° at a mean of 74 mm distal to the olecranon tip. Morphological features between the left and right sides were highly consistent. The ICC was between 0.789 and 0.978 for inter-observer and between 0.696 and 0.997 for intra-observer reliability. CONCLUSIONS: The proximal ulna features variable morphology but minor side differences among individuals. Over half of the anteromedial facet was not supported by the proximal ulnar diaphysis, making the coronoid vulnerable to elbow trauma. Preconditioning or customized design of the ulnar plate in the clinical setting with the help of contralateral morphology may be a good choice.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Both modular and monoblock tapered fluted titanium (TFT) stems are increasingly being used for revision total hip arthroplasty (rTHA). However, the differences between the two designs in clinical outcomes and complications are not yet clear. Here, we intend to compare the efficacy and safety of modular versus monoblock TFT stems in rTHA. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases were searched to include studies comparing modular and monoblock implants in rTHA. Data on the survivorship of stems, postoperative hip function, and complications were extracted following inclusion criteria. Inverse variance and Mantel-Haenszel methods in Review Manager (version 5.3 from Cochrane Collaboration) were used to evaluate differences between the two groups. RESULTS: Ten studies with a total of 2188 hips (1430 modular and 758 monoblock stems) were finally included. The main reason for the revision was aseptic loosening. Paprosky type III was the most common type in both groups. Both stems showed similar re-revision rates (modular vs monoblock: 10.3% vs 9.5%, P = 0.80) and Harris Hip Scores (WMD = 0.43, P = 0.46) for hip function. The intraoperative fracture rate was 11.6% and 5.0% (P = 0.0004) for modular and monoblock stems, respectively. The rate of subsidence > 10 mm was significantly higher in the monoblock group (4.5% vs 1.0%, P = 0.003). The application of extended trochanteric osteotomy was more popular in monoblock stems (22.7% vs 17.5%, P = 0.003). The incidence of postoperative complications such as periprosthetic femoral fracture and dislocation was similar between both stems. CONCLUSIONS: No significant difference was found between modular and monoblock tapered stems as regards postoperative hip function, re-revision rates, and complications. Severe subsidence was more frequent in monoblock stems while modular ones were at higher risk of intraoperative fracture. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level III, systematic review of randomized control and non-randomized studies. TRIAL REGISTRATION: We registered our study in the international prospective register of systematic reviews (PROSPERO) (CRD42020213642).

RESUMEN

Autophagy flux is impaired during myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (M-I/R) via the accumulation of autophagosome and insufficient clearance, which exacerbates cardiomyocyte death. Peli1 (Pellion1) is a RING finger domain-containing ubiquitin E3 ligase that could catalyze the polyubiquitination of substrate proteins. Peli1 has been demonstrated to play an important role in ischemic cardiac diseases. However, little is known about whether Peli1 is involved in the regulation of autophagy flux during M-I/R. The present study investigated whether M-I/R induced impaired autophagy flux could be mediated through Peli1 dependent mechanisms. We induced M-I/R injury in wild type (WT) and Peli1 knockout mice and observed that M-I/R significantly decreased cardiac function that was associated with increased cardiac Peli1 expression and upregulated autophagy-associated protein LC3II and P62. In contrast, Peli1 knockout mice exhibited significant improvement of M-I/R induced cardiac dysfunction and decreased LC3II and P62 expression. Besides, inhibitors of autophagy also increased the infarct size in Peli1 knockout mice after 24 h of reperfusion. Mechanistic studies demonstrated that in vivo I/R or in vitro hypoxia/reoxygenation (H/R) markedly increased the Peli1 E3 ligase activity which directly promoted the ubiquitination of P62 at lysine(K)7 via K63-linkage to inhibit its dimerization and autophagic degradation. Co-immunoprecipitation and GST-pull down assay indicated that Peli1 interacted with P62 via the Ring domain. In addition, Peli1 deficiency also decreased cardiomyocyte apoptosis. Together, our work demonstrated a critical link between increased expression and activity of Peli1 and autophagy flux blockage in M-I/R injury, providing insight into a promising strategy for treating myocardium M-I/R injury.

RESUMEN

Anchoring platinum catalysts on appropriate supports, e.g., MXenes, is a feasible pathway to achieve a desirable anode for direct methanol fuel cells. The authentic performance of Pt is often hindered by the occupancy and poisoning of active sites, weak interaction between Pt and supports, and the dissolution of Pt. Herein, we construct three-dimensional (3D) crumpled Ti3C2Tx MXene balls with abundant Ti vacancies for Pt confinement via a spray-drying process. The as-prepared Pt clusters/Ti3C2Tx (Ptc/Ti3C2Tx) show enhanced electrocatalytic methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) activity, including a relatively low overpotential, high tolerance to CO poisoning, and ultrahigh stability. Specifically, it achieves a high mass activity of up to 7.32 A mgPt-1, which is the highest value reported to date in Pt-based electrocatalysts, and 42% of the current density is retained on Ptc/Ti3C2Tx even after the 3000 min operative time. In situ spectroscopy and theoretical calculations reveal that an electric field-induced repulsion on the Ptc/Ti3C2Tx interface accelerates the combination of OH- and CO adsorption intermediates (COads) in kinetics and thermodynamics. Besides, this Ptc/Ti3C2Tx also efficiently electrocatalyze ethanol, ethylene glycol, and glycerol oxidation reactions with comparable activity and stability to commercial Pt/C.

RESUMEN

The proton, as the cationic form of the lightest element-H, is regarded as most ideal charge carrier in "rocking chair" batteries. However, current research on proton batteries is still at its infancy, and they usually deliver low capacity and suffer from severe acidic corrosion. Herein, electrochemically activated metallic H1.75MoO3 nanobelts are developed as a stable electrode for proton storage. The electrochemically pre-intercalated protons not only bond directly with the terminal O3 site via strong O-H bonds but also interact with the oxygens within the adjacent layers through hydrogen bonding, forming a hydrogen-bonding network in H1.75MoO3 nanobelts and enabling a diffusion-free Grotthuss mechanism as a result of its ultralow activation energy of ∼0.02 eV. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported inorganic electrode exhibiting Grotthuss mechanism-based proton storage. Additionally, the proton intercalation into MoO3 with formation of H1.75MoO3 induces strong Jahn-Teller electron-phonon coupling, rendering a metallic state. As a consequence, the H1.75MoO3 shows an outstanding fast charging performance and maintains a capacity of 111 mAh/g at 2500 C, largely outperforming the state-of-art battery electrodes. More importantly, a symmetric proton ion full cell based on H1.75MoO3 was assembled and delivered an energy density of 14.7 Wh/kg at an ultrahigh power density of 12.7 kW/kg, which outperforms those of fast charging supercapacitors and lead-acid batteries.

RESUMEN

Photocatalysis is regarded as one of the most promising technologies for indoor volatile organic compounds (VOCs) elimination due to its low cost, safe operation, energy efficiency, and high mineralization efficiency under ambient conditions. However, the practical applications of this technology are limited, despite considerable research efforts in recent decades. Until now, most of the works were carried out in the laboratory and focused on exploring new catalytic materials. Only a few works involved the immobilization of catalysts and the design of reactors for practical applications. Therefore, this review systematically summarizes the research and development on photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) of VOCs, with emphasis on recent catalyst's immobilization and reactor designs in detail. First, different types of photocatalytic materials and the mechanisms for PCO of VOCs are briefly discussed. Then, both the catalyst's immobilization techniques and reactor designs are reviewed in detail. Finally, the existing challenges and future perspectives for PCO of VOCs are proposed. This work aims to provide updated information and research inspirations for the commercialization of this technology in the future.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Generic medicines substitution is an important means to control rapid growth of pharmaceutical expenditures for the healthcare system in China. Acceptance and utilization of generic medicines is highly influenced by healthcare providers' perceptions. This study aimed to compare the knowledge, awareness and perceptions of generic medicines between physicians and pharmacists in China. METHODS: We used an online, cross-sectional survey across China. The questionnaire explored four sections: demographic characteristics, assessment of the participants' knowledge and awareness of generic medicines, perceptions of generic medicines and generic substitution practices. Chi-square or Mann-Whitney-U tests were applied to compare differences between physicians and pharmacists. P-values < 0.05 were considered significant. RESULTS: A total of 1644 physicians and 4187 pharmacists participated. Most physicians (82.8%, n = 1362) and pharmacists (89.8%, n = 3760) correctly identified the definition of generic medicines. A similar percentage of physicians and pharmacists agreed that approved generic medicines are as effective (64.1% vs 68.2%) or safe (63.8% vs 69.1%) as brand-name medicines. Most physicians and pharmacists (67.6% vs 71.0%) supported the policy of generic substitution. In practice, 79.4% (n = 1305) of physicians reported that they had prescribed generic medicines. More than 78% of respondents reported an obvious increase in the number of generic medicines prescribed in their medical institutions. The majority of physicians and pharmacists identified lack of trust regarding efficacy and safety of generic medicines and the difficulty of changing patients' preference as top challenges in generic substitution. CONCLUSIONS: Both physicians and pharmacists surveyed had adequate knowledge of generic medicines, and hold positive attitude towards generics and generic substitution. Efficacy and safety are key factors related to prescribing or dispensing generic medicines. Various policies and regulations should be taken to encourage successful generic substitution.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Hip-preserving revision in patients with failed treatment of femoral trochanteric fracture is still a major challenge. Whether the medial support reconstruction could benefit the patients and improve the success rate of hip-preserving revision is still controversial. Hence, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical significance and prognosis of medial support reconstruction during the hip-preserving revision of failed femoral trochanteric fracture treatment. METHODS: Patients with failed femoral trochanteric fractures treatments addressed by hip-preserving revision at our hospital from January 2014 to December 2020 were analyzed retrospectively. 31 patients were included and divided into a medial support group (n = 16) and a non-medial support group (n = 15). The fracture healing rate was the primary measurement. In addition, the differences in Oxford Hip Score (OHS), quality of life, surgical trauma, and complications were also evaluated. RESULTS: The fracture healing rate (100%, 16/16 vs. 66.67%, 10/15), the OHS (42.06 ± 4.12 vs. 30.93 ± 11.56, M ± SD), and the mental component score of the 12-item Short-Form Survey (SF-12) (54.48 ± 5.38 vs. 47.90 ± 3.47, M ± SD), were significantly better and the incidence of complications [0(0/16) vs. 40%(6/15)] was significantly lower in the medial support group than the non-medial support group (p < 0.05). No significant differences in the physical component score of the SF-12, surgical trauma and reduction in collodiaphyseal angle of affected femur were observed between groups. CONCLUSIONS: The reconstruction of medial support seems important for revision following failed treatment of femoral trochanteric fractures. Due to the medial augmentation and improvement of the mechanical stability for proximal femur, the patients might benefit from fracture healing prognosis and functional.

RESUMEN

Fish ponds polluted by the black water of eucalyptus forests (formed by the complexation of eucalyptus tannins with Fe3+) have experienced fish deaths. However, the toxicity of the components of black water is still unclear. To study the acute toxicities of eucalyptus leachate tannins to fish, their changes in the presence of Fe3+, and the underlying mechanisms, the static bioassay test method was adopted for acute exposure testing of zebrafish. Zebrafish were exposed to three kinds of tannins, namely, tannic acid (TA), epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and tannins from fresh eucalyptus leaf leacheate (TFL), and to solutions of these tannins with different molar ratios of Fe3+, under both no-aeration and aeration conditions. The results showed that the 48 h LC50 values of TA, EGCG and TFL were respectively 92, 47, and 186 mg·L-1, under no aeration, and 171, 86, and 452 mg·L-1 under aeration. When Fe3+ at 2, 1, and 6 times the molar amount of tannin was added to LC100 solutions of TA, EGCG and TFL, zebrafish mortality in 24 h was reduced to 0-33%. Acute fish death in eucalyptus plantation areas is related to high concentrations of eucalyptus tannins in the water. However, with increasing dissolved oxygen and Fe3+ levels, the acute toxicity of tannins to fish can be reduced. Thus, the black water in eucalyptus plantation areas reflects a water quality phenomenon that reduces the acute toxicity of eucalyptus tannins to fish. The mechanism of tannin toxicity to fish may be related to the impairment of oxygen delivery by fish blood, but the mechanism needs further study. These results provide a scientific basis for the prevention and control of fish suffering from acute eucalyptus tannin poisoning in eucalyptus plantation areas and for the protection of water resources.

RESUMEN

This study evaluated the effects of starch sources on pellet-processing characteristics as well as the growth performance and caecal microflora of rabbits. Ninety-six 35-day-old rabbits were randomly allocated to four groups with 24 rabbits per group and were fed diets with different starch sources (corn, wheat, potato or pea starch). The trial lasted for 40 days. The greatest hardness and lowest powder ratio of feed pellets was associated with the use of potato starch (p > 0.05). Pellet bulk density was the highest with corn starch, and the density was greater than that of pea starch by 5.91% (p < 0.05). The pulverisation ratio of corn starch pellets was the lowest, 43.67% lower than that of the pea starch pellets (p < 0.05). The average daily gain of rabbits in the corn starch group was higher than in the potato and pea starch groups, by 7.89% and 10.81%, respectively (p < 0.05). Rabbits in the corn starch group had the best feed conversion ratio (p > 0.05). The feed intake of rabbits in the potato starch group was higher than in the wheat and pea starch groups, by 4.30% and 5.16% respectively (p < 0.05). The dominant caecal bacteria phyla were Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Verrucomicrobia and Proteobacteria. There were 12 bacterial genera with proportions greater than 0.1%. The caecal proportion of Clostridium in the pea starch group was 1.8%, which was higher than those of the other groups (p = 0.057). There was no significant difference in caecal microbial diversity among groups (p > 0.05). The highest microbial clustering effect was found in the corn starch treatment. In conclusion, the best pellet quality was found using potato starch; for rabbit growth, the optimal source was corn starch.
