In the field of oxide thermoelectrics, perovskite CaMnO3 ceramics have drawn plenty of attention due to their chemical stability, low cost, and environmental friendliness. By employing Ruddlesden-Poppe phase Ca3Mn2O7 as a precursor, the plate-like CaMnO3 microcrystals were successfully synthesized by the molten salt method combined with topochemical microcrystal conversion (TMC). The plate-like morphology of CaMnO3 was coordinately optimized by modulating the crystal structure of MnO2 and the molten salt environment. Plate-like microcrystals with an average size of ∼14.55 µm and a thickness of ∼2.89 µm were obtained by TMC reaction, demonstrating an obvious anisotropy. When ß-MnO2 was used as the raw material, a length-thickness ratio of 4.77 was obtained, which was attributed to the fact that CaMnO3 inherited the plate-like morphology of the Ca3Mn2O7 precursor during the TMC. The results confirm that the plate-like CaMnO3 microcrystals with obvious anisotropy can provide excellent template seeds for high-quality CaMnO3-based textured ceramics.

Etomidate is a nonbarbiturate sedative derived from imidazole. Prolonged and excessive use of etomidate can lead to the suppression of adrenocortical function, myoclonus, and even death. This report describes a rare case of a 47-year-old man who died from acute intoxication after oral ingestion of liquid containing etomidate. The cause of death was conclusively attributed to etomidate based on a comprehensive investigation, including autopsy, histopathological examination, toxicological analysis, and biochemical analysis. This is the first reported case of a fatality solely resulting from the oral ingestion of etomidate, which can provide valuable insights for future forensic investigations involving etomidate poisoning. Therefore, it is imperative to share this case with the scientific community.

The production of defensive metabolites in plants can be induced by signaling chemicals released by neighboring plants. Induction is mainly known from volatile aboveground signals, with belowground signals and their underlying mechanisms largely unknown. We demonstrate that (-)-loliolide triggers defensive metabolite responses to competitors, herbivores, and pathogens in seven plant species. We further explore the transcriptional responses of defensive pathways to verify the signaling role of (-)-loliolide in wheat and rice models with well-known defensive metabolites and gene systems. In response to biotic and abiotic stressors, (-)-loliolide is produced and secreted by roots. This, in turn, induces the production of defensive compounds including phenolic acids, flavonoids, terpenoids, alkaloids, benzoxazinoids, and cyanogenic glycosides, regardless of plant species. (-)-Loliolide also triggers the expression of defense-related genes, accompanied by an increase in the concentration of jasmonic acid and hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 ). Transcriptome profiling and inhibitor incubation indicate that (-)-loliolide-induced defense responses are regulated through pathways mediated by jasmonic acid, H2 O2 , and Ca 2+ . These findings argue that (-)-loliolide functions as a common belowground signal mediating chemical defense in plants. Such perception-dependent plant chemical defenses will yield critical insights into belowground signaling interactions.

Plants actively respond to their neighbors by altering root placement patterns. Neighbor-modulated root responses involve root detection and interactions mediated by root-secreted functional metabolites. However, chemically mediated root placement patterns and their underlying mechanisms remain elusive. We used an allelopathic wheat model system challenged with 60 target species to identify root placement responses in window rhizobox experiments. We then tested root responses and their biochemical mechanisms in incubation experiments involving the addition of activated carbon and functional metabolites with amyloplast staining and auxin localization in roots. Wheat and each target species demonstrated intrusive, avoidant or unresponsive root placement, resulting in a total of nine combined patterns. Root placement patterns were mediated by wheat allelochemicals and (-)-loliolide signaling of neighbor species. In particular, (-)-loliolide triggered wheat allelochemical production that altered root growth and placement, degraded starch grains in the root cap and induced uneven distribution of auxin in target species roots. Root placement patterns in wheat-neighbor interactions were perception dependent and species dependent. Signaling (-)-loliolide induced the production and release of wheat allelochemicals that modulated root placement patterns. Therefore, root placement patterns are generated by both signaling chemicals and allelochemicals in allelopathic plant-plant interactions.

BACKGROUND: Fibroblasts, especially cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs), represent the predominant stromal cell population in the tumor microenvironment and have an important function in tumorigenesis by interacting with tumor cells. However, their interaction remains elusive in an inflammatory tumor microenvironment induced by Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori). METHODS: The expression of Serpin family E member 1 (Serpin E1) was measured in fibroblasts with or without H. pylori infection, and primary gastric cancer (GC) cells. Serpin E1 knockdown and overexpression fibroblasts were generated using Serpin E1 siRNA or lentivirus carrying Serpin E1. Co-culture models of fibroblasts and GC cells or human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were established with direct contact or the Transwell system. In vitro functional experiments and in vivo tumorigenesis assay were employed to study the malignant behaviors of GC cells interacting with fibroblasts. ELISA was used for quantifying the levels of Serpin E1 and VEGFA in the culture supernatant. The tube formation capacity of HUVECs was assessed using a tube formation assay. Recombinant human Serpin E1 (recSerpin E1), anti-Serpin E1 antibody, and a MAPK pathway inhibitor were utilized to treat HUVECs for elucidating the underlying molecular mechanisms. RESULTS: Serpin E1 was predominantly expressed in gastric CAFs. H. pylori infection significantly enhanced the expression and secretion of Serpin E1 by CAFs. Both fibroblast-derived Serpin E1 and recSerpin E1 enhanced the growth, invasion, and migration of GC cells, along with increased VEGFA expression and tube formation in HUVECs. Furthermore, the co-inoculation of GC cells and fibroblasts overexpressing Serpin E1 triggered the expression of Serpin E1 in cancer cells, which facilitated together xenograft tumor growth and peritoneal dissemination of GC cells in nude mice, with an increased expression of Ki67, Serpin E1, CD31 and/or VEGFA. These processes may be mediated by Serpin E1-induced migration and p38 MAPK/VEGFA-mediated angiogenesis of HUVECs. CONCLUSION: H. pylori infection induces Serpin E1 expression in fibroblasts, subsequently triggering its expression in GC cells through their interaction. Serpin E1 derived from these cells promotes the migration and p38 MAPK/VEGFA-mediated angiogenesis of HUVECs, thereby facilitating GC growth and peritoneal metastasis. Targeting Serpin E1 signaling is a potential therapy strategy for H. pylori-induced GC.

BACKGROUND: The 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (25 (OH) D3) is crucial for follicular development. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the level of 25 (OH) D3 in endometriosis patients, pregnancy outcomes of in vitro fertilization (IVF), and the underlying mechanism. METHODS: The 25 (OH) D3 levels in serum and follicular Fluid (FF) samples were detected using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Clinical features and pregnancy outcomes of endometriosis patients were also compared between the deficient group (< 20 ug/ml) and the adequate group (≥ 20 ug/ml). The effects of 25 (OH) D3 on the proliferation and cell cycle of human ovarian granulosa cells were respectively detected by CCK-8 assay and flow cytometry (FCM). The differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in granulosa cells of endometriosis and tubal infertility patients were screened from GEO database. The effects of 25 (OH) D3 on the expressions of CDKN2D, PPARA, TGFB2 and THBD were determined using quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and Western blot. RESULTS: The levels of 25 (OH) D3 in serum and FF samples were decreased in endometriosis patients. The deficient group had fewer embryos that can be transferred, lower quality embryos and lower clinical pregnancy rates. Adequate 25 (OH) D3 levels in FF samples was a protective factor for live birth outcome in endometriosis patients. 25 (OH) D3 enhanced the proliferation capacity of granulosa cells (the concentration of 10 nM was the most significant) and increased the proportion of G2M + S phase cells. The expression of CDKN2D was decreased and TGFB2 and THBD were significantly upregulated. CONCLUSIONS: 25 (OH) D3 deficiency may be associated with poor IVF pregnancy outcomes in endometriosis patients. 25 (OH) D3 promotes ovarian granulosa cell proliferation by promoting the ability of cells to divide, and may accelerate cell cycle progression by up-regulating THBD and down-regulating CDKN2D expression.

Developing cathode materials with high specific capability and excellent electrochemical performance is crucial for the advancement of aluminum-ion batteries, which leverage the high theoretical energy density of aluminum metal anodes. In this paper, we investigated the interaction ofAlCl4cluster and Al atom with AlN (-100) and (001) monolayer using density functional theory to assess the applicability of AlN as cathode material for aluminum-ion batteries. The results show that the AlN (001) monolayer is the most effective for adsorbing and accommodatingAlCl4clusters. Moreover, the AlN (001) monolayer maintains metallic behavior at different concentrations of theAlCl4cluster, laying the foundation for its battery application. The theoretical storage capacity of theAlCl4cluster is 105.93mAhg-1,which exceeds that of the Al/graphite battery. The formation energy ofAlCl4-intercalated AlN compounds is -2.74 eV, and the intercalant gallery height is moderate. Furthermore, the diffusion barrier of 0.19 eV forAlCl4cluster between the AlN (001) monolayer provides high rate capability. The results indicate that AlN monolayer may be a potential cathode material for aluminum-ion batteries.

BACKGROUND Partition curtains are one of the main sources of nosocomial infection in the hospital environment. However, there are no unified standards for monitoring medical textiles across different countries or regions. This study aimed to investigate the accuracy of 2 different sampling methods - swabbing vs RODAC (replicate organism detection and counting) agar plate - in terms of detection of bacterial contamination, and their suitability as monitoring methods for partition curtains and other medical textiles. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 24 partition curtains were selected by stratified random sampling. The swabbing technique and RODAC agar plates were the chosen sampling methods. The number of colony-forming units was calculated and colony morphologies and strains on the plates were observed and identified after culturing. RESULTS A total of 192 samples were collected. Of them, 161 pathogenic strains were isolated via the swabbing technique and 309 pathogenic strains were isolated using the RODAC agar plates. The swabbing technique had a higher proportion for gram-positive bacteria (P=0.0004), while RODAC agar plates had a higher proportion for gram-negative bacteria (P=0.72). The detection of bacterial contamination rates using the swabbing technique was superior to that of the RODAC agar plate method (P<0.001). CONCLUSIONS The swabbing technique offers more advantages in terms of detection of bacterial contamination rates and gram-positive bacteria, while the RODAC agar plate is more sensitive for detection of gram-negative bacteria.

AIM: To construct and validate a postoperative hypothermia prediction model for patients undergoing joint replacement surgery. BACKGROUND: Postoperative hypothermia is one of the harmful perioperative complications in patients undergoing joint replacement surgery. The previous studies mainly focused on intraoperative hypothermia prediction models. The prediction model for postoperative hypothermia in patients with joint replacement surgery was understudied. DESIGN: Cohort study. METHODS: We collected data from 503 participants undergoing joint replacement surgery in a tertiary hospital from January 2019 to December 2021. Of those, 404 cases were assigned to the modelling and 99 to the validation groups. Logistic regression was used to construct the model. The AUC was used to test the predictive effect of the model. Finally, 99 cases were used to verify the application effect of the model. A TRIPOD checklist was used to guide the reporting of this study. RESULTS: The factors entered into the prediction model were age, intraoperative hypothermia, BMI, heat preservation measures and platelet (PLT). The model was constructed as follows: Logit (P) = .537 + 3.669 × 1 (intraoperative hypothermia) + .030 × age - .289 × BMI + 2.857 × 1 (intraoperative insulation measures) + .003 × PLT. Hosmer-Lemeshow test, p = .608, the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) was .861. The Youden index was .530, the sensitivity was .599 and the specificity was .93. The incidence of postoperative hypothermia in the modelling group was 42.93% (173/404), and that in the verification group was 43.43% (43/99), χ2 = .012, p = .912. The correct practical application rate was 87.88%. This model has a good application effect. CONCLUSION: The current prediction model provided a reference for clinical screening of patients with high-risk hypothermia after joint replacement surgery. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: Clinical nurses can use the developed prediction model to predict the occurrence of postoperative hypothermia and provide a reference for the preventive measure.

Cleft palate is one of the most common birth defects. Previous studies revealed that multiple factors, including impaired intracellular or intercellular signals, and incoordination of oral organs led to cleft palate, but were little concerned about the contribution of the extracellular matrix (ECM) during palatogenesis. Proteoglycans (PGs) are one of the important macromolecules in the ECM. They exert biological functions through one or more glycosaminoglycan (GAG) chains attached to core proteins. The family with sequence similarity 20 member b (Fam20b) are newly identified kinase-phosphorylating xylose residues that promote the correct assembly of the tetrasaccharide linkage region by creating a premise for GAG chain elongation. In this study, we explored the function of GAG chains in palate development through Wnt1-Cre; Fam20bf/f mice, which exhibited complete cleft palate, malformed tongue, and micrognathia. In contrast, Osr2-Cre; Fam20bf/f mice, in which Fam20b was deleted only in palatal mesenchyme, showed no abnormality, suggesting that failed palatal elevation in Wnt1-Cre; Fam20bf/f mice was secondary to micrognathia. In addition, the reduced GAG chains promoted the apoptosis of palatal cells, primarily resulting in reduced cell density and decreased palatal volume. The suppressed BMP signaling and reduced mineralization indicated an impaired osteogenesis of palatine, which could be rescued partially by constitutively active Bmpr1a. Together, our study highlighted the key role of GAG chains in palate morphogenesis.

Rice lacks sufficient amounts of zinc despite its vitality for human health. Leaf senescence enables redistribution of nutrients to other organs, yet Zn retransfer during deficiency is often overlooked. In this hydroponic experiment, we studied the effect of Zn deficiency on rice seedlings, focusing on the fourth leaf under control and deficient conditions. Growth phenotype analysis showed that the growth of rice nodal roots was inhibited in Zn deficiency, and the fourth leaf exhibited accelerated senescence and increased Zn ion transfer. Analyzing differentially expressed genes showed that Zn deficiency regulates more ZIP family genes involved in Zn ion retransfer. OsZIP3 upregulation under Zn-deficient conditions may not be induced by Zn deficiency, whereas OsZIP4 is only induced during Zn deficiency. Gene ontology enrichment analysis showed that Zn-deficient leaves mobilized more biological pathways (BPs) during aging, and the enrichment function differed from that of normal aging leaves. The most apparent "zinc ion transport" BP was stronger than that of normal senescence, possibly due to Zn-deficient leaves mobilizing large amounts of BP related to lipid metabolism during senescence. These results provide a basis for further functional analyses of genes and the study of trace element transfer during rice leaf senescence.

Bionic polarization navigation has attracted extensive attention because of its strong anti-interference performance and no accumulation of errors over time. However, very few studies have fully considered the influence of adverse weather conditions such as cloudy and overcast weather, which play a key role in navigation accuracy. Therefore, we propose an adaptive ultraviolet-visible light compass method based on local atmospheric polarization characteristics applicable to various weather conditions. The proposed method transforms the heading determination problem into a multiclassification problem by using a weather recognition technique. Ultraviolet detection is used to weaken the depolarization effect of cloud particles and to obtain more accurate skylight polarization patterns. Then, on the basis of screening effective data, the sun direction vector is calculated by using the electric vector direction and is finally combined with the astronomical calendar to achieve navigation. The experimental results confirm that, compared to the other methods, the designed algorithm can suppress the interference of clouds better and adapt to complex weather conditions. Under cloudy and overcast conditions, the heading angle error is reduced to less than 2°.

OBJECTIVE: To report on the clinical characteristics of a family of short-rib polydactyly syndrome type III and its pathogenic variants. METHODS: Muscle samples from the the third fetus was collected after the induction of labor, and peripheral blood samples of its parents and grandparents were also collected. Whole exome sequencing (WES) was carried out for the pedigree. Candidate variants were verified by Sanger sequencing of the family. RESULTS: The proband was found to harbor a c.9819+1G>A variant and a c.4625C>A variant of the DYNC2H1 gene, which were respectively inherited from its mother and father. Sanger sequencing verified that the family has fit the autosomal recessive inheritance. CONCLUSION: The c.9819+1G>A and c.4625C>A variants of the DYNC2H1 gene probably underlay the short-rib polydactyly syndrome type 3 in the proband.

Cancer drug resistance is a formidable obstacle that enhances cancer stem-like cell properties, tumour metastasis and relapse. Luteolin (Lut) is a natural flavonoid with strong antitumor effects. However, the underlying mechanism(s) by which Lut protects against paclitaxel-resistant (PTX-resistant) cancer cell remains unknown. Herein, we found that Lut significantly attenuated the stem-like properties of PTX-resistant cancer cells by downregulating the expression of SOX2 protein. Additionally, further study showed that Lut could inhibit the PI3K/AKT pathway to decrease the phosphorylation level of AKT(S473) and UBR5 expression, which is an ubiquitin E3 ligase that promotes SOX2 degradation. In addition, Lut also inhibited PTX-resistant cancer cell migration and invasion by blocking epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Importantly, Lut inhibited the tumorigenic ability of oesophageal PTX-resistant cancer cells and showed no obvious toxicity in vivo. Thus, Lut has potential as a promising agent for drug-resistant oesophageal cancer therapy.

BACKGROUND In pregnant women with advanced maternal age (AMA) and fetuses with ultrasonographic (USG) soft markers it is always challenging to decide whether to implement chromosomal microarray analysis (CMA) or not. It is unclear whether CMA should be used in the fetuses with isolated USG soft markers, and there is still a lack of extensive sample research. MATERIAL AND METHODS We enrolled 1521 cases in our research and divided them into 3 groups as follows: pregnant women with isolated AMA (group 1, n=633), pregnant women whose fetuses had isolated USG soft markers (group 2, n=750), and pregnant women with AMA whose fetuses had isolated USG soft markers (group 3, n=138). All pregnant women underwent prenatal ultrasound and amniocentesis, and fetal cells in the amniotic fluid were used for genetic analysis of CMA. All participants signed a written informed consent prior to CMA. RESULTS Abnormal findings were detected by CMA in 330 (21.70%) fetuses, including 37 (2.43%) clinically significant copy number variations (CNVs), 52 (3.42%) benign or likely benign CNVs, and 240 (15.78%) variants of unknown significance. The frequency of clinically significant CNVs in group 1 and group 2 were significantly lower than that in group 3 (2.37% and 2.0% vs 5.07%, P<0.01). More than a half (59.46%, 22/37) of the pregnant women decided to continue their pregnancy despite having a fetus diagnosed with clinically significant CNV. CONCLUSIONS CMA can increase the diagnostic yield of fetal chromosomal abnormality for pregnant women with isolated AMA or/and their fetuses had isolated USG soft markers.

RESUMEN

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) was initially identified in China and currently worldwide dispersed, resulting in the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Notably, COVID-19 is characterized by systemic inflammation. However, the potential mechanisms of the "cytokine storm" of COVID-19 are still limited. In this study, fourteen peripheral blood samples from COVID-19 patients (n = 10) and healthy donors (n = 4) were collected to perform the whole-transcriptome sequencing. Lung tissues of COVID-19 patients (70%) presenting with ground-glass opacity. Also, the leukocytes and lymphocytes were significantly decreased in COVID-19 compared with the control group (p < 0.05). In total, 25,482 differentially expressed messenger RNAs (DE mRNA), 23 differentially expressed microRNAs (DE miRNA), and 410 differentially expressed long noncoding RNAs (DE lncRNAs) were identified in the COVID-19 samples compared to the healthy controls. Gene Ontology (GO) analysis showed that the upregulated DE mRNAs were mainly involved in antigen processing and presentation of endogenous antigen, positive regulation of T cell mediated cytotoxicity, and positive regulation of gamma-delta T cell activation. The downregulated DE mRNAs were mainly concentrated in the glycogen biosynthetic process. We also established the protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks of up/downregulated DE mRNAs and identified 4 modules. Functional enrichment analyses indicated that these module targets were associated with positive regulation of cytokine production, cytokine-mediated signaling pathway, leukocyte differentiation, and migration. A total of 6 hub genes were selected in the PPI module networks including AKT1, TNFRSF1B, FCGR2A, CXCL8, STAT3, and TLR2. Moreover, a competing endogenous RNA network showed the interactions between lncRNAs, mRNAs, and miRNAs. Our results highlight the potential pathogenesis of excessive cytokine production such as MSTRG.119845.30/hsa-miR-20a-5p/TNFRSF1B, MSTRG.119845.30/hsa-miR-29b-2-5p/FCGR2A, and MSTRG.106112.2/hsa-miR-6501-5p/STAT3 axis, which may also play an important role in the development of ground-glass opacity in COVID-19 patients. This study gives new insights into inflammation regulatory mechanisms of coding and noncoding RNAs in COVID-19, which may provide novel diagnostic biomarkers and therapeutic avenues for COVID-19 patients.

BACKGROUND: Trisomy of the short arm of chromosome 17 is a rare genomic disorder. The clinical features of complete trisomy 17p syndrome have been described. Most cases of this syndrome have been found in infants and children, but only a few cases were found by ultrasound in the prenatal period. METHODS: We report a case of complete trisomy 17p syndrome, which was inherited from paternal balanced translocation t(15;17)(q11.2;q11.2). A pregnant woman underwent an ultrasound examination at 24 weeks of gestation. Amniotic fluid was collected by amniocentesis. Cytogenetic and single nucleotide polymorphism array analyses were performed. We further reviewed the relationship between duplication regions and the clinical phenotype. RESULTS: Ultrasonographic evaluation showed intrauterine growth retardation and a right choroid plexus cyst, but the gallbladder was not observed. The fetal karyotype was 46,XX,der(17)t(15;17)(q11.2;q11.2)pat. The father's karyotype was 46,XY,t(15;17)(q11.2;q11.2). The single nucleotide polymorphism array results showed arr[GRCh37] 17p13.3q11.1(525-25309337)×3, which indicated a 25.309-Mb duplication. CONCLUSION: Complete trisomy 17p syndrome shows severe malformations. Intrauterine growth retardation is the most typical manifestation of this syndrome as shown by ultrasonography in the second trimester of pregnancy. The genotype-phenotype relationships of complete trisomy 17p syndrome are not completely consistent. To further determine these relationships, additional cases are necessary to provide more information from ultrasonographic findings during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Chromosome translocation is a genetic factor associated with male infertility. However, cases of Y chromosome/autosome translocation are rare. Individuals with translocation between the Y chromosome and an autosome have a variety of different clinical phenotypes. There is a need for further study of molecular cytogenetic feature of those with Y chromosome translocation. METHODS: We reported that an apparently healthy 31-year-old man, 168 cm tall and weighing 65 kg, had a 2-year history of primary infertility after marriage. Clinical diagnostic techniques included semen analysis, hormone measurements, cytogenetic analysis, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), and high-throughput multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification semiconductor sequencing. Detailed genetic counseling was provided to the patient. Intracytoplasmic sperm injection treatment combined with preimplantation genetic diagnosis was chosen with the aim of achieving a successful pregnancy. RESULTS: Semen analysis revealed cryptozoospermia. Hormone levels were within the normal limits. Sequencing results indicated the presence of the sex-determining region on Yp, and AZFa, AZFb, and AZFc regions on Yq. The patient's karyotype was 45,X,psu,dic(Y;14)(p11.3;q11.2), which was confirmed by cytogenetic analysis and FISH. CONCLUSION: This study reports a case of cryptozoospermia in a male patient with a Y;14 chromosomal translocation. When clinical karyotyping has revealed potential Y chromosome abnormality, FISH or molecular detection should be further performed to facilitate identification of the chromosomal breakpoint.

Although paclitaxel is a promising frontline chemotherapy agent for various malignancies, the clinical applications have been restricted by side effects, drug resistance, and cancer metastasis. The combination of paclitaxel and other agents could be the promising strategies against malignant tumor, which enhances the antitumor effect through synergistic effects, reduces required drug concentrations, and also suppresses tumorigenesis in multiple ways. In this study, we found that luteolin, a natural flavonoid compound, combined with low-dose paclitaxel synergistically regulated the proliferation, migration, epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), and apoptosis of esophageal cancer cells in vitro, as well as synergistically inhibited tumor growth without obvious toxicity in vivo. The molecular mechanism of inhibiting cell migration and EMT processes may be related to the inhibition of SIRT1, and the mechanism of apoptosis induction is associated with the reactive oxygen species (ROS)/c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) pathway-mediated activation of mitochondrial apoptotic pathway.

PURPOSE: Recent studies on hypothermia typically focused on a single anesthesia method or a particular surgical procedure. Although there are multiple risk factors leading to hypothermia, such as the use of cold solutions or nonhumidified and nonheated anesthetic gases, few studies have reported the incidence of postoperative hypothermia among patients in the postanesthesia care unit (PACU). DESIGN: This is a retrospective analysis of patients who underwent surgery and were admitted to the PACU immediately after surgery at the Fourth Affiliated Hospital, College of Medicine, Zhejiang University, from September 2018 to March 2019. METHODS: Patient data were collected and analyzed in two groups to understand the factors affecting the occurrence of hypothermia. Hypothermia was defined as a core temperature of less than 36°C. On the basis of body temperature, patients in the PACU were divided into hypothermic and nonhypothermic groups. Factors influencing hypothermia were studied by the univariate method, followed by logistic regression analysis to identify the risk factors for hypothermia onset. FINDINGS: Of a total of 1,788 patients were enrolled in the study, 113 (6.32%) exhibited hypothermia (<36°C) in the PACU. The hypothermic and nonhypothermic groups displayed significant differences (P < .05) in the anesthesia method used as well as the American Society of Anesthesiologists physical classification status. The body temperature at the time the patients were admitted to the operating room influenced the occurrence of postoperative hypothermia (P < .01). These parameters were recognized as independent risk factors for postoperative hypothermia in the PACU. CONCLUSIONS: Significant risk factors for the onset of hypothermia were general anesthesia and higher American Society of Anesthesiologists grade. However, epidural anesthesia was found to have a protective effect.
