RESUMEN

The emerging evidence of human infections with emerging viruses suggests their potential public health importance. A novel taxon of viruses named Statoviruses (for stool-associated Tombus-like viruses) was recently identified in the gastrointestinal tracts of multiple mammals. Here we report the discovery of respiratory Statovirus-like viruses (provisionally named Restviruses) from the respiratory tracts of five patients experiencing acute respiratory disease with Human coronavirus OC43 infection through the retrospective analysis of meta-transcriptomic data. Restviruses shared 53.1%-98.8% identities of genomic sequences with each other and 39.9%-44.3% identities with Statoviruses. The phylogenetic analysis revealed that Restviruses together with a Stato-like virus from nasal-throat swabs of Vietnamese patients with acute respiratory disease, formed a well-supported clade distinct from the taxon of Statoviruses. However, the consistent genome characteristics of Restviruses and Statoviruses suggested that they might share similar evolutionary trajectories. These findings warrant further studies to elucidate the etiological and epidemiological significance of the emerging Restviruses.

The quest for smart electronics with higher energy densities has intensified the development of high-voltage LiCoO2 (LCO). Despite their potential, LCO materials operating at 4.7 V faces critical challenges, including interface degradation and structural collapse. Herein, we propose a collective surface architecture through precise nanofilm coating and doping that combines an ultra-thin LiAlO2 coating layer and gradient doping of Al. This architecture not only mitigates side reactions, but also improves the Li+ migration kinetics on the LCO surface. Meanwhile, gradient doping of Al inhibited the severe lattice distortion caused by the irreversible phase transition of O3-H1-3-O1, thereby enhanced the electrochemical stability of LCO during 4.7 V cycling. DFT calculations further revealed that our approach significantly boosts the electronic conductivity. As a result, the modified LCO exhibited an outstanding reversible capacity of 230 mAh g-1 at 4.7 V, which is approximately 28 % higher than the conventional capacity at 4.5 V. To demonstrate their practical application, our cathode structure shows improved stability in full pouch cell configuration under high operating voltage. LCO exhibited an excellent cycling stability, retaining 82.33 % after 1000 cycles at 4.5 V. This multifunctional surface modification strategy offers a viable pathway for the practical application of LCO materials, setting a new standard for the development of high-energy-density and long-lasting electrode materials.

The seasonal human coronaviruses (HCoVs) have zoonotic origins, repeated infections, and global transmission. The objectives of this study are to elaborate the epidemiological and evolutionary characteristics of HCoVs from patients with acute respiratory illness. We conducted a multicenter surveillance at 36 sentinel hospitals of Beijing Metropolis, China, during 2016-2019. Patients with influenza-like illness (ILI) and severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) were included, and submitted respiratory samples for screening HCoVs by multiplex real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction assays. All the positive samples were used for metatranscriptomic sequencing to get whole genomes of HCoVs for genetical and evolutionary analyses. Totally, 321 of 15 677 patients with ILI or SARI were found to be positive for HCoVs, with an infection rate of 2.0% (95% confidence interval, 1.8%-2.3%). HCoV-229E, HCoV-NL63, HCoV-OC43, and HCoV-HKU1 infections accounted for 18.7%, 38.3%, 40.5%, and 2.5%, respectively. In comparison to ILI cases, SARI cases were significantly older, more likely caused by HCoV-229E and HCoV-OC43, and more often co-infected with other respiratory pathogens. A total of 179 full genome sequences of HCoVs were obtained from 321 positive patients. The phylogenetical analyses revealed that HCoV-229E, HCoV-NL63 and HCoV-OC43 continuously yielded novel lineages, respectively. The nonsynonymous to synonymous ratio of all key genes in each HCoV was less than one, indicating that all four HCoVs were under negative selection pressure. Multiple substitution modes were observed in spike glycoprotein among the four HCoVs. Our findings highlight the importance of enhancing surveillance on HCoVs, and imply that more variants might occur in the future.

PURPOSE: Complete and rapid recanalization of blood flow by percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is the most effective intervention for patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). However, myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury leads to microvascular obstruction (MVO), limiting its efficacy. Colchicine can reduce myocardial I/R injury, but its effect on MVO is unclear. Hence, this study aimed to assess the role and mechanism of colchicine on MVO. METHODS: Clinical data on STEMI patients with PCI were collected and risk factors related to MVO were analyzed. The rat myocardial I/R model was established to evaluate the MVO by thioflavin S staining. The myocardial I/R model of mice was treated with PBS or colchicine at the reperfusion. The effect of colchicine on cardiomyocyte apoptosis after I/R was evaluated by TUNEL and expression of cleaved caspase-3. ROS levels were detected in H9c2 cells to evaluate the colchicine effect on myocardial oxidative stress. Moreover, the mechanism through which colchicine attenuated MVO was examined using flow cytometry, WB, ELISA, immunohistochemistry, bioinformatics analysis, and immunofluorescence. RESULTS: Multivariate analysis showed that elevated neutrophils were associated with extensive MVO. Colchicine could attenuate MVO and reduce neutrophil recruitment and NETs formation after myocardial I/R. In addition, colchicine inhibited cardiomyocyte apoptosis in vivo and ROS levels in vitro. Furthermore, colchicine inhibited neutrophil proliferation in the bone marrow (BM) by inhibiting the S100A8/A9 inflammatory signaling pathway. CONCLUSIONS: Colchicine attenuated MVO after myocardial I/R injury by inhibiting the proliferation of neutrophils in BM through the neutrophil-derived S100A8/A9 inflammatory signaling pathway.

Adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) plays pivotal roles in metabolic diseases including type 2 diabetes. However, the specific role of AMPK for orthodontic tooth movement in type 2 diabetes is unclear. In this study, a diabetic rat model was established through dietary manipulation and streptozocin injection. Examinations were conducted to select qualified type 2 diabetic rats. Then, an orthodontic device was applied to these rats for 0, 3, 7, or 14 days. The distance of orthodontic tooth movement and parameters of alveolar bone were analyzed by micro-computed tomography. Periodontal osteoclastic activity, inflammatory status, and AMPK activity were measured via histological analyses. Next, we repeated the establishment of diabetic rats to investigate whether change of AMPK activity was associated with orthodontic tooth movement under type 2 diabetes. The results showed that diabetic rats exhibited an exacerbated alveolar bone resorption, overactive inflammation, and decreased periodontal AMPK activity during orthodontic tooth movement. Injection of the AMPK agonist alleviated type 2 diabetes-induced periodontal inflammation and alveolar bone resorption, thus normalizing distance of orthodontic tooth movement. Our study indicates that type 2 diabetes decreases periodontal AMPK activity, leading to excessive inflammation elevating osteoclast formation and alveolar bone resorption, which could be reversed by AMPK activation.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the imaging features of corneal deposits and nerve alterations in Chinese patients with Bietti Corneoretinal Crystalline Dystrophy (BCD) using in vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM). METHODS: Twenty patients with BCD and 20 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were enrolled in this retrospective, observational study. Corneal deposits and sub-basal nerve plexus (SNP) were observed by IVCM. Parameters of SNP including total nerve density/number, main nerve trunk density/number, and branch nerve density/number were analyzed by Neuron J. RESULTS: Corneal deposits were observed in both eyes of all patients by IVCM. These crystals appeared as dot-shaped, needle-shaped, and rod-shaped hyperreflective bodies and were located not only in the sub-epithelium and stroma of cornea, but in endothelium which were not reported before. There was a decrease of total nerve density (P < 0.001), main nerve trunk density (P = 0.007), and branch nerve density (P = 0.001), in BCD compared to controls. The number of total nerves/frame (P = 0.001), main nerve trunks/frame (P = 0.005), and branch nerves/frame (P = 0.006) in BCD were lower than controls. CONCLUSION: New findings in locations of corneal crystals by IVCM expand the phenotype spectrum of BCD. Corneal deposits may be useful for diagnosis of BCD, especially ones without retinal deposits. Corneal nerve parameters were reduced in BCD, which may provide new insights to be further explored to contribute to our understanding of BCD. IVCM is a promising tool to evaluate corneal deposits and nerve alterations in BCD.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the role of ephrinB2-EphB4 signalling in alveolar bone remodelling on the tension side during orthodontic tooth movement (OTM). MATERIALS AND METHODS: An OTM model was established on sixty 8-week-old male Wistar rats. They were randomly divided into the experimental group and the control group. The animals in the experimental group were administrated with subcutaneous injection of EphB4 inhibitor NVP-BHG712 every other day, whereas the control group received only the vehicle. Samples containing the maxillary first molar and the surrounding bone were collected after 0, 3, 7, 14 and 21 days of tooth movement. RESULTS: EphrinB2-EphB4 signalling was actively expressed on the tension side during tooth movement. Micro-CT analysis showed the distance of tooth movement in the experimental group was significantly greater than that of the control group (P < .05) with significantly increased trabecular separation (Tb. Sp) and decreased trabecular number (Tb. N) from day 14 to day 21. The number of osteoclasts significantly increased in the experimental group compared with the control group after 3 and 7 days of tooth movement (P < .05). The expressions of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and osteopontin (OPN) were significantly reduced by inhibition of EphB4 (P < .05). CONCLUSION: The inhibition of EphB4 suppressed bone formation and enhanced bone resorption activities on the tension side of tooth movement. The ephrinB2-EphB4 signalling might play an important role in alveolar bone remodelling during OTM.

OBJECTIVES: Based on a prospective design, this study aimed to investigate the relationships of leisure activities with physical and cognitive functions among Chinese older adults. METHODS: The respondents aged 65 years or more were selected from the 2014-2018 of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey. Physical function measurement indicators were reflected by activities of daily living (ADL), instrumental activities of daily living (IADL), and physical performance (PP), while cognitive function was assessed by Mini-Mental State Examination. Fine-Gray competing risk regression models were used to analyze the data. RESULTS: Using the figures for 2014 as a baseline for the study, we included 6047, 6216, 5951, and 5916 respondents in the ADL, IADL, PP, and cognitive function analyses, respectively. The prospective results showed that keeping domestic animals or pets was related to a lower risk of ADL disability of respondents after adjustment (SHR: 0.619, 95% CI: 0.486, 0.788). Similarly, taking part in social activities (SHR: 0.781, 95%CI: 0.658, 0.929) and reading books or newspapers (SHR: 0.793, 95% CI: 0.656, 0.958) were associated with a lower risk of IADL disability. Playing cards or mahjong was correlated with a lower risk of cognitive impairment (SHR: 0.669, 95% CI: 0.507, 0.882), while keeping domestic animals or pets was related to a higher risk of cognitive impairment (SHR: 1.279, 95% CI: 1.047, 1.562). CONCLUSION: Participation in leisure activities moderately may decrease the risk of a decline in physical and cognitive functions among Chinese older adults.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is characterized by hepatocyte destruction, leading to lymphocyte and macrophage accumulation in the liver. Macrophages are key drivers of AIH. A membrane-permeable pan-caspase inhibitor, Z-Val-Ala-DL-Asp-fluoromethylketone (zVAD), induces macrophage necroptosis in response to certain stimuli. However, the function of zVAD in the pathogenesis of autoimmune hepatitis remains elusive. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effect and explore the underlying mechanisms of zVAD against AIH. METHODS: Murine acute autoimmune liver injury was established by concanavalin A (ConA) injection. Bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMDMs) were used in adoptive cell transfer experiments. The mechanism of action of zVAD was examined using macrophage cell lines and BMDMs. Phosphorylation of mixed lineage kinase domain-like proteins was used as a marker of necroptosis. RESULTS: Treatment with zVAD increased necroptosis, reduced inflammatory cytokine production, and alleviated liver injury in a ConA-induced liver injury mouse model. Regardless of zVAD treatment, macrophage deletion resulted in reduced neutrophil accumulation and relieved ConA-induced liver injury. In vitro studies have shown that zVAD pretreatment promotes lipopolysaccharide-induced macrophage necroptosis and leads to reduced pro-inflammatory cytokine and chemokine secretion. Transferring zVAD-pretreated BMDMs in mice notably reduced ConA-associated liver inflammation and injury, resulting in lower mortality than that observed after transferring normal BMDMs. Mechanistically, zVAD treatment increased the expression of tumour necrosis factor receptor (TNFR)-1 and interleukin (IL)-10 in macrophages. TNFR1 expression decreased upon transfection with IL-10-specific small interfering RNAs and blocking of TNFR1 decreased macrophage necroptosis. CONCLUSIONS: We found that zVAD alleviated ConA-induced liver injury by increasing the sensitivity of macrophages to necroptosis via IL-10-induced TNFR1 expression. This study provides new insights into the treatment of autoimmune hepatitis via zVAD-induced macrophage necroptosis.

Photonics provides a promising approach for image processing by spatial filtering, with the advantage of faster speeds and lower power consumption compared to electronic digital solutions. However, traditional optical spatial filters suffer from bulky form factors that limit their portability. Here we present a new approach based on pixel arrays of plasmonic directional image sensors, designed to selectively detect light incident along a small, geometrically tunable set of directions. The resulting imaging systems can function as optical spatial filters without any external filtering elements, leading to extreme size miniaturization. Furthermore, they offer the distinct capability to perform multiple filtering operations at the same time, through the use of sensor arrays partitioned into blocks of adjacent pixels with different angular responses. To establish the image processing capabilities of these devices, we present a rigorous theoretical model of their filter transfer function under both coherent and incoherent illumination. Next, we use the measured angle-resolved responsivity of prototype devices to demonstrate two examples of relevant functionalities: (1) the visualization of otherwise invisible phase objects and (2) spatial differentiation with incoherent light. These results are significant for a multitude of imaging applications ranging from microscopy in biomedicine to object recognition for computer vision.

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is an aggressive subtype of breast cancer that frequently develops resistance to chemotherapy. A new approach to treating TNBC is required to improve patient survival. Phosphodiesterase-4 (PDE4) is an enzyme that is predominantly involved in the modulation of intracellular signaling mediated by cAMP. Although the efficacy of PDE4 inhibitors in several human inflammatory diseases is well documented, their clinical utility has been limited by side effects, including nausea and emesis. Recently, PDE4 has been used as a potential therapeutic target for different cancer types. In the present study, we investigated the anticancer effects of a novel PDE4 inhibitor ZL-n-91 on TNBC and the underlying mechanism. We showed that ZL-n-91 inhibited the proliferation of TNBC cells, induced cell apoptosis, and caused cell cycle arrest. Western blot analysis showed that ZL-n-91 increased Bax level and reduced Bcl-2 expression. Furthermore, downregulation of the cell cycle-related proteins, such as CDK2, CDK4, cyclin D1, PCNA, p-RB, and ZL-n-91, significantly inhibited the transcription of DNA repair genes and triggered an intracellular DNA damage response. Moreover, ZL-n-91 prevented the growth of the transplanted MDA-MB-231 tumor xenograft in nude mice and increased the γ-H2AX expression. These data demonstrate the anticancer effects of ZL-n-91 on TNBC cells and suggest its potential use in anticancer therapy.

BACKGROUND: Activated microglia can trigger pro-inflammatory cytokine releases and neuroinflammation, which may inhibit astrocytes to produce neurotrophins and anti-inflammatory factors. Both eventually lead to neuron apoptosis or death. Furthermore, effective antidepressant or anti-dementia treatments can reduce pro-inflammatory cytokines, while enhance interleukin (IL)-10 production. However, the underline mechanism by which IL-10 modulates glial cell function, hence improves cognitive impairment or depression-like behavior is unknown. This study evaluated whether and how IL-10 attenuated chronic IL-1ß administration-induced behavioral changes and the possible involved mechanisms. METHODS: Rats received intracerebroventricular injection of IL-1ß and/or IL-10 for 14 days. Then animal memory and depression-like behavior, pro-inflammatory cytokines, glial activities, expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), Trk B, p75, and apoptosis-related genes were studied. RESULTS: Compared to controls, significantly increased latent time and swimming distance in the Morris-water-maze, decreased sucrose consumption, and decreased locomotor and center zone entries in the open-field were found in rats administrated with IL-1ß. These changes were associated with the reduction of GFAP expression, and concentrations of BDNF and anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10, but the increase in the expressions of CD11b, TrkB, p75, and Caspase-3, the ratio of Bax/Bcl-2, and the concentrations of IL-1ß, tumor necrosis factor-α, and IL-6. IL-10 treatment markedly attenuated IL-1ß-induced above changes, except for the expressions of neurotrophin receptors. CONCLUSION: IL-10-improved behavioral changes may be through suppressing microglia activity and inflammation, while restoring astrocyte function and BDNF expression.

AIMS: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of Ephedra sinica on physicochemical characteristics and bacterial community of ensiled native grass by multiple physicochemical analyses combined with high-throughput sequencing. METHODS AND RESULTS: Treatments were a control treatment with no additive (CON), E. sinica was added at 1% (CEa1), 3% (CEa2), and 5% of the fresh materials (CEa3). Compared to the CON group, the dry matter and water-soluble carbohydrate contents were significantly (p < 0.05) decreased in the CEa1 group. Compared to the CON group, the pH was significantly (p < 0.05) decreased in E. sinica treated silages, and a higher lactic acid content was observed in E. sinica treated silages. At the genus level, the abundance of Enterococcus, Lactobacillus, Pediococcus, and Weissella were the predominant member in the CON, CEa1, CEa2, and CEa3 groups, respectively. The abundance of Lactobacillus was significantly (p < 0.05) increased in the CEa1 group and Pediococcus was significantly (p < 0.05) increased in the CEa2 group. According to the 16S rRNA gene-predicted functional profiles, the inoculation of E. sinica accelerated the carbohydrate metabolism. CONCLUSIONS: In summary, the addition of E. sinica could improve the silage quality of native grass by regulating the bacterial community, and the addition of a 1% percentage of fresh materials exhibited the potential possibility of responding to get high-quality native grass silages. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: The utilization of herbal additives on fermentation quality combined with 16S rRNA gene-predicted functional analyses will contribute to the direction of future research in improving silage quality.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to clarify the effects of diabetes mellitus (DM) on inflammatory profile during orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) and explore potential mechanisms. METHODS: OTM models were established in healthy (Ctrl) and DM rats for 0, 3, 7 or 14 days. The tooth movement distance and bone structural parameters were analyzed through micro-CT. The bone resorption activity and periodontal inflammation status were evaluated through histological staining. RNA sequencing was performed to detect differentially expressed genes in force loading-treated periodontal ligament fibroblasts (PDLFs) with or without high glucose. The differential expression of inflammatory genes associated with NOD-like receptor family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) between groups was tested in vitro and in vivo. RESULTS: DM caused remarkable reduction of alveolar bone height and density around the moved tooth, corresponding with the higher bone resorption activity and inflammatory scores of DM group. For force loading-treated PDLFs, high glucose induced the activation of inflammatory pathways, including NLRP3. Elevated expression of NLRP3 and cascade molecules (Caspase-1, GSDMD, and IL-1ß) were validated by RT-qPCR, Western blot, and immunohistochemistry staining. CONCLUSIONS: DM alters the inflammatory status of periodontium and affects tissue reconstruction during OTM. NLRP3 inflammasome may involve in diabetes-induced periodontal changes.

BACKGROUND: Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a genetically heterogeneous disease with 89 causative genes identified to date. However, only approximately 60% of RP cases genetically solved to date, predicating that many novel disease-causing variants are yet to be identified. The purpose of this study is to identify novel variants in PDE6A and PDE6B genes and present its phenotypes in patients with retinitis pigmentosa in Chinese families. METHODS: Five retinitis pigmentosa patients with PDE6A variants and three with PDE6B variants were identified through a hereditary eye disease enrichment panel (HEDEP), all patients' medical and ophthalmic histories were collected, and ophthalmological examinations were performed, followed by an analysis of the possible causative variants. Sanger sequencing was used to verify the variants. RESULTS: We identified 20 variants in eight patients: 16 of them were identified in either PDE6A or PDE6B in a compound heterozygous state. Additional four heterozygous variants were identified in the genes ADGRA3, CA4, OPTN, RHO. Two novel genetic changes in PDE6A were identified (c.1246G > A and c.1747 T > A), three novel genetic changes in PDE6B were identified (c.401 T > C, c.2293G > C and c.1610-1612del), out of the novel identified variants one was most probably non-pathogenic (c.2293G > C), all other novel variants are pathogenic. Additional variant was identified in CA4 and RHO, which can cause ADRP (c.243G > A, c.688G > A). In addition, a novel variant in ADGRA3 was identified (c.921-1G > A). CONCLUSIONS: This study reveals novel and known variants in PDE6A and PDE6B genes in Chinese families with autosomal recessive RP, and expands the clinical and genetic findings of photoreceptor-specific enzyme deficiencies.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to develop a machine learning-based application in a real-world medical domain to assist anesthesiologists in assessing the risk of complications in patients after a hip surgery. METHODS: Data from adult patients who underwent hip repair surgery at Chi-Mei Medical Center and its 2 branch hospitals from January 1, 2013, to March 31, 2020, were analyzed. Patients with incomplete data were excluded. A total of 22 features were included in the algorithms, including demographics, comorbidities, and major preoperative laboratory data from the database. The primary outcome was a composite of adverse events (in-hospital mortality, acute myocardial infarction, stroke, respiratory, hepatic and renal failure, and sepsis). Secondary outcomes were intensive care unit (ICU) admission and prolonged length of stay (PLOS). The data obtained were imported into 7 machine learning algorithms to predict the risk of adverse outcomes. Seventy percent of the data were randomly selected for training, leaving 30% for testing. The performances of the models were evaluated by the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC). The optimal algorithm with the highest AUROC was used to build a web-based application, then integrated into the hospital information system (HIS) for clinical use. RESULTS: Data from 4,448 patients were analyzed; 102 (2.3%), 160 (3.6%), and 401 (9.0%) patients had primary composite adverse outcomes, ICU admission, and PLOS, respectively. Our optimal model had a superior performance (AUROC by DeLong test) than that of ASA-PS in predicting the primary composite outcomes (0.810 vs. 0.629, p < 0.01), ICU admission (0.835 vs. 0.692, p < 0.01), and PLOS (0.832 vs. 0.618, p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: The hospital-specific machine learning model outperformed the ASA-PS in risk assessment. This web-based application gained high satisfaction from anesthesiologists after online use.

The aim of this study was to explore the involvement of long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) during intermittent parathyroid hormone (PTH) induced cementogenesis. Expression profiles of lncRNAs and mRNAs were obtained using high-throughput microarray. Gene Ontology enrichment analysis, Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway analysis, and coding-noncoding gene coexpression networks construction were performed. We identified 190 lncRNAs and 135 mRNAs that were differentially expressed during intermittent PTH-induced cementogenesis. In this process, the Wnt signaling pathway was negatively regulated, and eight lncRNAs were identified as possible core regulators of Wnt signaling. Based on the results of microarrray analysis, we further verified the repressed expression of Wnt signaling crucial components ß-catenin, APC and Axin2. Above all, we speculated that lncRNAs may play important roles in PTH-induced cementogenesis via the negative regulation of Wnt pathway.

Adiponectin is an adipocytokine with anti-inflammatory and anticancer properties. Our previous study has shown that blood adiponectin levels were inversely correlated to the risk of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), and that adiponectin could directly suppress the proliferation of NPC cells. However, the effect of adiponectin on NPC metastasis remains unknown. Here, we revealed in clinical studies that serum adiponectin level was inversely correlated with tumor stage, recurrence, and metastasis in NPC patients, and that low serum adiponectin level also correlates with poor metastasis-free survival. Coculture with recombinant adiponectin suppressed the migration and invasion of NPC cells as well as epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). In addition, recombinant adiponectin dampened the activation of NF-κB and STAT3 signaling pathways induced by adipocyte-derived proinflammatory factors such as leptin, IL-6, and TNF-α. Pharmacological activation of adiponectin receptor through its specific agonist, AdipoRon, largely stalled the metastasis of NPC cells. Taken together, these findings demonstrated that adiponectin could not only regulate metabolism and inhibit cancer growth, but also suppress the metastasis of NPC. Pharmacological activation of adiponectin receptor may be a promising therapeutic strategy to stall NPC metastasis and extend patients' survival.

BACKGROUND: Despite a great deal of existing research on nurses' job stress and intention to stay, it is still unclear how the association between Chinese nurses' job stress and intention to stay is affected by presenteeism and family functioning. AIMS: This study aimed to investigate the correlations of Chinese nurses' job stress, presenteeism, and family functioning with their intention to stay and clarify the mediating effect of presenteeism and the moderating effect of family functioning on the association between their job stress and intention to stay. METHOD: A cross-sectional study of 1,008 nurses was performed in a major general hospital in Qiqihar City, Heilongjiang Province, China. The participants were invited to engage in a questionnaire survey regarding job stress, presenteeism, family functioning, and intention to stay. A moderated mediation analysis was conducted through multiple linear regression analysis and the PROCESS macro. RESULTS: Job stress and presenteeism were negatively correlated with intention to stay, whereas family functioning was positively correlated with intention to stay. The effect of job stress on intention to stay was partially mediated by presenteeism (Effect = -0.147, 95% CI = [-0.305, -0.003]). In addition, family functioning moderated the direct effect of job stress on intention to stay (Index = -0.134, 95% CI = [-0.274, -0.001]). CONCLUSIONS: Presenteeism and family functioning were found to play mediating and moderating roles, respectively, in the relationship between job stress and intention to stay. Relevant interventions or family-friendly programs should be developed to enhance nurses' intention to stay.

Nurses' mental health is related to the quality of medical care and the outcome of treatment, and has become an important issue in nursing management. However, the role of burnout in the relationship between job satisfaction and psychological distress have not been evaluated. This study aimed to examine the prevalence of psychological distress among Chinese nurses and explore the associations of job satisfaction and burnout with psychological distress. A cross-sectional survey of 866 nurses was conducted in Qiqihar City, Heilongjiang Province of China. Job satisfaction, burnout, and psychological distress were assessed via the single-item, the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey, and the 12-item General Health Questionnaire respectively, followed by a mediation analysis through the multiple regression analysis and a PROCESS macro method. The prevalence of psychological distress was 35.2% among the participants. After controlling the potential confounding factors, job satisfaction and burnout were found to be still associated with psychological distress (P < 0.001). Furthermore, psychological distress was negatively correlated with both job satisfaction (r = -0.312) and personal accomplishment (r = -0.422) but positively correlated with both emotional exhaustion (r = 0.491) and depersonalization (r = 0.449). Burnout may mediate the association between job satisfaction and psychological distress (B = 0.139, ß = 0.440, P < 0.001 for emotional exhaustion; B = 0.226, ß = 0.382, P < 0.001 for depersonalization; and B = -0.105, ß = -0.368, P < 0.001 for personal accomplishment). The mental health status of Chinese nurses remains to be improved. Low job satisfaction and burnout could increase the risk of psychological distress among Chinese nurses. Moreover, job satisfaction may partially affect psychological distress among Chinese nurses through emotional exhaustion, personal accomplishment, and depersonalization.
