RESUMEN

Understanding who adopt green production and why they choose this strategy is an important issue that needs to be addressed in the context of increasingly severe agricultural pollution. Previous studies have generally investigated subsistence-oriented smallholders, typically employing profit maximization or risk minimization models. However, Chinese farmers have differentiated, and have unique characteristics. This study collected data from 960 random samples of rice farmers and conducted quantitative analysis. The findings reveal that 94.9 % of the farmers had less than 2-ha rice-planting area, and 80.21 % of farmers reported that their purpose of planting rice was for family self-feeding. Furthermore, the new standard to define smallholder based on whether their production purpose is self-feeding or selling and found that non-smallholders had an overall advantage and passed the t-test. Even more non-smallholder (76.32 %) intentionally chose green pesticide than smallholders (66.1 %), but their decision-making logic was different. Binary logistic regression results show that three aspects of self-actualization (environmental, market, and personal) positively and significantly affected the green production behavior of smallholders, but not significant for non-smallholders. This study suggests that in China, where smallholders are the mainstay of agriculture production, green production by smallholders will greatly improve the ecological environment and provide high quality agricultural products.

RESUMEN

Objective: Bladder cancer is one of the most prominent malignancies affecting the urinary tract, characterized by a poor prognosis. Our previous research has underscored the pivotal role of m6A methylation in the progression of bladder cancer. Nevertheless, the precise relationship between N6-methyladenosine (m6A) regulation of long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) and bladder cancer remains elusive. Methods: This study harnessed sequencing data and clinical records from 408 bladder cancer patients in the TCGA database. Employing R software, we conducted bioinformatics analysis to establish an m6A-lncRNA co-expression network. Analyzing the differences between high and low-risk groups, particularly at the immunological level, and subsequently investigating the primary regulatory factors of these lncRNA, validating the findings through experiments, and exploring their specific cellular functions. Results: We identified 50 m6A-related lncRNA with prognostic significance through univariate Cox regression analysis. In parallel, we employed a LASSO-Cox regression model to pinpoint 11 lncRNA and calculate risk scores for bladder cancer patients. Based on the median risk score, patients were categorized into low-risk and high-risk groups. The high-risk cohort exhibited notably lower survival rates than their low-risk counterparts. Further analysis pointed to RBM15 and METTL3 as potential master regulators of these m6A-lncRNA. Experimental findings also shed light on the upregulated expression of METTlL3 and RBM15 in bladder cancer, where they contributed to the malignant progression of tumors. The experimental findings demonstrated a significant upregulation of METTL3 and RBM15 in bladder cancer specimens, implicating their contributory role in the oncogenic progression. Knockdown of METTL3 and RBM15 resulted in a marked attenuation of tumor cell proliferation, invasion, and migration, which was concomitant with a downregulation in the cellular m6A methylation status. Moreover, these results revealed that RBM15 and METTL3 function in a synergistic capacity, positing their involvement in cancer promotion via the upregulation of m6A modifications in long non-coding RNAs. Additionally, this study successfully developed an N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (MNU)-induced rat model of in situ bladder carcinoma, confirming the elevated expression of RBM15 and METTL3, which paralleled the overexpression of m6A-related- lncRNAs observed in bladder cancer cell lines. This congruence underscores the potential utility of these molecular markers in in vivo models that mirror human malignancies. Conclusion: This study not only offers novel molecular targets, but also enriches the research on m6A modification in bladder cancer, thereby facilitating its clinical translation.

RESUMEN

Vaccination for dogs is essential for controlling rabies and achieving the goal of eliminating dog-mediated rabies globally by 2030. This paper aims to investigate the preferences for public services regarding rabies vaccination, in an effort to optimize the existing rabies vaccination and prevention programs in China. The households investigated had significant preferences for dog rabies vaccination service attributes. The households can be classified into three types: resolute executors (52.13%), mischievous rebels (5.85%), and incentivized compliers (42.02%). The residence, the presence of children in the household, perception of the safety risks, and knowledge of rabies may be sources of heterogeneity. Supportive services on dog rabies vaccination should be made available, such as arranging weekend vaccination services, building mobile vaccination stations, providing home vaccination services, and increasing vaccine supply through multiple channels. Furthermore, multiple measures can be taken to increase rabies vaccination awareness among family members and facilitate dog management innovation to further increase the level of rabies prevention and control.

RESUMEN

The consumption patterns of university students hold the power to significantly influence market trends. This study illuminates the escalating emphasis on animal welfare in these students' purchasing choices, specifically concerning milk products. Utilizing a discrete choice experiment, we identified a pronounced preference among students for milk products with animal welfare certifications. Students were segmented into three categories based on their motivations: "Quality-Oriented" (20.55%), "Emotionally Intuitive" (30.67%), and "Quality-Emotion Balanced" (48.77%). The "Emotionally Intuitive" group manifested the most robust inclination toward such certifications. Based on these findings, we recommend tailored market strategies targeting these distinct segments. Moreover, our findings emphasize the importance of intensifying animal welfare education, shaping a market aligned with animal welfare principles, and fostering a broader societal environment attuned to animal welfare.

RESUMEN

There is growing public concern about the welfare of farm animals, and farm animal welfare can be considered an ethical attribute of product quality. This paper elicits consumers' willingness to pay (WTP) for animal welfare attributes in pork products using a choice experiment (CE) in China. Consumers are willing to pay a premium of 13.923 to 18.493 CNY/500 g for more desirable product attributes in terms of animal welfare, branding, humane slaughter, and environmental friendliness. There is a complementary relationship between ethical morality in public policy and animal welfare farming. The findings of the study contribute to an increasing understanding of consumer preferences for animal-friendly products in emerging countries. A wide range of relevant, practical initiatives to help promote animal welfare development are needed in China, by strengthening the education of ecological ethics and animal welfare ideology, establishing an animal welfare security system by global standards, and optimising contractual arrangements for the value chain of animal-friendly products.

RESUMEN

As purchase power and consumption knowledge increase, consumers gradually demand safer and healthier products. Animal welfare is expected to be an important attribute of high-end food in the future and a major concern for the high-quality development of the livestock industry. The objective was to shed new light on our understanding of consumers' perceptions and behavioral intentions toward animal-friendly food. Using sample data of 1499 food consumers in Guangdong province, China, this study explored the role of product cognition and empathy in the relationship between consumers' knowledge and behavioral intentions. Results indicate that knowledge of animal welfare significantly influences consumers' behavioral intentions, and there is a mediating effect on cognition. Meanwhile, empathy moderates the relationship between product cognition and consumers' intentions to purchase or recommend animal-friendly products. Improving consumers' knowledge of animal welfare and cognitive levels of animal-friendly products may contribute to promoting animal-friendly product consumption and sustainable development of the livestock industry.

RESUMEN

Consumption demands for pork produced by farms that employ strategies to improve animal welfare ("animal welfare pork") will be an important indicator for predicting domestic pig feeding standards and pork industry development. This paper analyzes consumer preferences for animal welfare pork based on the choice experiment data of 1274 pork consumers in Guangdong province, China. The results show that consumers had a significant preference for animal welfare pork and that they were willing to pay a premium of 2.359-10.477 CNY/500 g (5.27-23.39%) on average. There is heterogeneity in consumer preferences regarding age, education level, and income. Producers of animal-derived products can not only adjust the mix of production conditions to improve pig welfare and innovate contractual arrangements for industry chain stakeholder groups, but they can also develop differentiated marketing strategies for animal welfare products to meet consumer demands for animal welfare.

RESUMEN

China implemented stringent non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) in spring 2020, which has effectively suppressed SARS-CoV-2. In this study, we utilized data from routine respiratory virus testing requests from physicians and examined circulation of 11 other respiratory viruses in Southern China, from January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2020. A total of 58,169 throat swabs from patients with acute respiratory tract infections (ARTIs) were collected and tested. We found that while the overall activity of respiratory viruses was lower during the period with stringent NPIs, virus activity rebounded shortly after the NPIs were relaxed and social activities resumed. Only influenza was effectively suppressed with very low circulation which extended to the end of 2020. Circulation of other respiratory viruses in the community was maintained even during the period of stringent interventions, especially for rhinovirus. Our study shows that NPIs against COVID-19 have different impacts on respiratory viruses.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Recently the Chinese government has introduced support for cervical screening in rural areas. The College of American Pathologists (CAP)-certified Guangzhou Kingmed Diagnostics laboratory supported rural screening program in Hainan Providence utilizing low-cost conventional Papanicolaou smears (CPS). STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective study of CPS screening results from 2011 to 2014 in 11 rural counties in Hainan Province. Women, most previously unscreened, volunteered to attend free CPS screening. The targeted population was women aged 35-65 years. RESULTS: Among total 218,195 conventional Papanicolaou smears, the reported abnormal rate was 4.4% of all smears, with 0.5% for high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL), 0.9% for low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL), 2.6% for atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance, and 0.3% for atypical squamous cells, cannot exclude high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion. Reporting rates for different TBS categories were generally within CAP benchmark ranges, except for low reporting rates for unsatisfactory smears and for atypical glandular cells. Abnormal cytology rates varied among counties. Comparing different age groups, the LSIL rate was significantly higher in women <50 years than in women ≥50 years (1.04% versus 0.64%). The HSIL rate was significantly higher in women ≥40 years than in women <40 years (5.3% versus 0.38%). A total of 2286 women with abnormal Papanicolaou smears had documented colposcopic and histopathologic follow-up. Cervical cancer was diagnosed in 23 of 2286 (1.01%) of screened and biopsied patients. Histopathologic HSIL results were confirmed in 80% of biopsied women with HSIL Papanicolaou tests. CONCLUSIONS: CPS offered a low cost method to introduce cervical screening in rural China. The international College of American Pathologists Laboratory Accreditation Program provided laboratory quality control standards not otherwise readily available. Educational training programs have been instituted to address areas identified for quality improvement.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Telepathology is increasingly being employed to support diagnostic consultation services. Prior publications have addressed technology aspects for telepathology, whereas this paper will address the clinical telepathology experience of KingMed Diagnostics, the largest independent pathology medical laboratory in China. Beginning in 2012 the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) and KingMed Diagnostics partnered to establish an international telepathology consultation service. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective study that summarizes the telepathology experience and diagnostic consultation results between UPMC and KingMed over a period of 3 years from January 2012 to December 2014. RESULTS: A total of 1561 cases were submitted for telepathology consultation including 144 cases in 2012, 614 cases in 2013, and 803 in 2014. Most of the cases (61.4%) submitted were referred by pathologists, 36.9% by clinicians, and 1.7% by patients in China. Hematopathology received the most cases (23.7%), followed by bone/soft tissue (21.0%) and gynecologic/breast (20.2%) subspecialties. Average turnaround time (TAT) per case was 5.4 days, which decreased from 6.8 days in 2012 to 5.0 days in 2014. Immunostains were required for most of the cases. For some difficult cases, more than one round of immunostains was needed, which extended the TAT. Among 855 cases (54.7%) where a primary diagnosis or impression was provided by the referring local hospitals in China, the final diagnoses rendered by UPMC pathologists were identical in 25.6% of cases and significantly modified (treatment plan altered) in 50.8% of cases. CONCLUSION: These results indicate that international telepathology consultation can significantly improve patient care by facilitating access to pathology expertise. The success of this international digital consultation service was dependent on strong commitment and support from leadership, information technology expertise, and dedicated pathologists who understood the language and culture on both sides. Lack of clinical information, missing gross pathology descriptions, and insufficient tissue sections submitted for evaluation were the main reasons for indefinite diagnoses. The overall experience encourages international telepathology practice for second opinions.
