RESUMEN

Moiré superlattices based on van der Waals bilayers1-4 created at small twist angles lead to a long wavelength pattern with approximate translational symmetry. At large twist angles (θt), moiré patterns are, in general, incommensurate except for a few discrete angles. Here we show that large-angle twisted bilayers offer distinctly different platforms. More specifically, by using twisted tungsten diselenide bilayers, we create the incommensurate dodecagon quasicrystals at θt = 30° and the commensurate moiré crystals at θt = 21.8° and 38.2°. Valley-resolved scanning tunnelling spectroscopy shows disparate behaviours between moiré crystals (with translational symmetry) and quasicrystals (with broken translational symmetry). In particular, the K valley shows rich electronic structures exemplified by the formation of mini-gaps near the valence band maximum. These discoveries demonstrate that bilayers with large twist angles offer a design platform to explore moiré physics beyond those formed with small twist angles.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The traditional method of taking Chinese Medicine involves creating a decoction by cooking medicinal Chinese herbs. However, this method has become less popular, being replaced by the more convenient method of consuming concentrated Chinese herbal extracts, which creates challenges related to the complexity of stacking multiple formulas. METHODS: We developed the Chinese Intelligence Prescription System (CIPS) to simplify the prescription process. In this study, we used data from our institutions pharmacy to calculate the number of reductions, average dispensing time, and resulting cost savings. RESULTS: The mean number of prescriptions was reduced from 8.19 ± 3.65 to 7.37 ± 3.34 ([Formula: see text]). The reduction in the number of prescriptions directly resulted in decreased dispensing time, reducing it from 1.79 ± 0.25 to 1.63 ± 0.66 min ([Formula: see text]). The reduced dispensing time totaled 3.75 h per month per pharmacist, equivalent to an annual labor cost savings of $15,488 NTD per pharmacist. In addition, drug loss was reduced during the prescription process, with a mean savings of $4,517 NTD per year. The combined savings adds up to a not insignificant $20,005 NTD per year per pharmacist. When taking all TCM clinics/hospitals in Taiwan into account, the total annual savings would be $77 million NTD. CONCLUSION: CIPS assists clinicians and pharmacists to formulate precise prescriptions in a clinical setting to simplify the dispensing process while reducing medical resource waste and labor costs.

RESUMEN

Tris (dibenzylideneacetone) dipalladium (Tris DBA), a small-molecule palladium complex, has been shown to inhibit cell growth and proliferation in pancreatic cancer, lymphocytic leukemia, and multiple myeloma. In the current study, we examined the therapeutic effects of Tris DBA on glomerular cell proliferation, renal inflammation, and immune cells. Treatment of accelerated and severe lupus nephritis (ASLN) mice with Tris DBA resulted in improved renal function, albuminuria, and pathology, including measurements of glomerular cell proliferation, cellular crescents, neutrophils, fibrinoid necrosis, and tubulointerstitial inflammation in the kidneys as well as scoring for glomerulonephritis activity. The treated ASLN mice also showed significantly decreased glomerular IgG, IgM, and C3 deposits. Furthermore, the compound was able to 1) inhibit bone marrow-derived dendritic cell-mediated T cell functions and reduce serum anti-dsDNA autoantibody levels; 2) differentially regulate autophagy and both the priming and activation signals of the NLRP3 inflammasome; and 3) suppress the phosphorylation of JNK, ERK, and p38 MAPK signaling pathways. Tris DBA improved ASLN in mice through immunoregulation by blunting the MAPK (ERK, JNK)-mediated priming signal of the NLRP3 inflammasome and by regulating the autophagy/NLRP3 inflammasome axis. These results suggest that the pure compound may be a drug candidate for treating the accelerated and deteriorated type of lupus nephritis.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Early trunk rotation (ETR), which is a unique kinematics of the trunk that occurs during baseball throwing, is thought to be related to shoulder injuries. Pelvic rotation is a confounder when studying the effects of trunk rotation on shoulder biomechanics. The purpose of this study was to understand the "pure" effects of trunk rotation on shoulder biomechanics, with pelvic rotation under control. Our hypotheses were as follows: (1) throwers with ETR have a different shoulder kinematics pattern compared with throwers without ETR; (2) throwers with ETR have a lower ball speed performance than do throwers without ETR; and (3) throwers with ETR have a greater value of shoulder forces and moments, which may increase risks of shoulder injury, than do throwers without ETR. METHODS: Fifty-seven elite throwers were enrolled and divided into 2 groups (non-ETR and ETR) using an outdoor motion analysis. Several kinematics and kinetics parameters of the shoulder were analyzed and compared between the 2 groups. RESULTS: Ball velocity was faster in the non-ETR group (127 km/h) compared with the ETR group (120 km/h). The shoulders of throwers in the ETR group showed pathokinematics of "horizontal adduction lag" and "dropped elbow." The increases in maximal posterior force, inferior force, horizontal abduction moment, and vertical adduction moment were 9.2%, 13.6%, 21.3%, and 24.3%, respectively, in the shoulders of throwers in the ETR group. These results indicate that ETR may be hazardous for the throwing shoulder. With lower ball velocity and higher shoulder joint loading, ETR is not a proper pitching pattern for kinetic energy transfer. CONCLUSION: Improper pitching mechanics among baseball throwers, such as ETR, may result in higher shoulder joint loading and increased risk of shoulder injuries. When treating throwers with shoulder injuries, it is important not only to address shoulder anatomy and pathology but also to understand the possible pathomechanics and pathogenesis of the shoulder caused by ETR. Furthermore, special training programs focusing on trunk flexibility and core muscle strengthening should be implemented to prevent ETR and decrease the risk of shoulder injuries. Motion analysis is useful for the screening and early detection of improper pitching mechanics in throwers.

RESUMEN

We report here details of steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopy of excitonic dynamics for Janus transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers, including MoSSe and WSSe, which were synthesized by low-energy implantation of Se into transition metal disulfides. Absorbance and photoluminescence spectroscopic measurements determined the room-temperature exciton resonances for MoSSe and WSSe monolayers. Transient absorption measurements revealed that the excitons in Janus structures form faster than those in pristine transition metal dichalcogenides by about 30% due to their enhanced electron-phonon interaction by the built-in dipole moment. By combining steady-state photoluminescence quantum yield and time-resolved transient absorption measurements, we find that the exciton radiative recombination lifetime in Janus structures is significantly longer than in their pristine samples, supporting the predicted spatial separation of the electron and hole wave functions due to the built-in dipole moment. These results provide fundamental insight in the optical properties of Janus transition metal dichalcogenides.

RESUMEN

Animal coronaviruses (CoVs) have been identified to be the origin of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS)-CoV, Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS)-CoV, and probably SARS-CoV-2 that cause severe to fatal diseases in humans. Variations of zoonotic coronaviruses pose potential threats to global human beings. To overcome this problem, we focused on the main protease (Mpro), which is an evolutionary conserved viral protein among different coronaviruses. The broad-spectrum anti-coronaviral drug, GC376, was repurposed to target canine coronavirus (CCoV), which causes gastrointestinal infections in dogs. We found that GC376 can efficiently block the protease activity of CCoV Mpro and can thermodynamically stabilize its folding. The structure of CCoV Mpro in complex with GC376 was subsequently determined at 2.75 Å. GC376 reacts with the catalytic residue C144 of CCoV Mpro and forms an (R)- or (S)-configuration of hemithioacetal. A structural comparison of CCoV Mpro and other animal CoV Mpros with SARS-CoV-2 Mpro revealed three important structural determinants in a substrate-binding pocket that dictate entry and release of substrates. As compared with the conserved A141 of the S1 site and P188 of the S4 site in animal coronaviral Mpros, SARS-CoV-2 Mpro contains N142 and Q189 at equivalent positions which are considered to be more catalytically compatible. Furthermore, the conserved loop with residues 46-49 in animal coronaviral Mpros has been replaced by a stable α-helix in SARS-CoV-2 Mpro. In addition, the species-specific dimerization interface also influences the catalytic efficiency of CoV Mpros. Conclusively, the structural information of this study provides mechanistic insights into the ligand binding and dimerization of CoV Mpros among different species.

RESUMEN

Molybdenum sulfide emerged as promising hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalyst thanks to its high intrinsic activity, however its limited active sites exposure and low conductivity hamper its performance. To address these drawbacks, the non-equilibrium nature of pulsed laser deposition (PLD) is exploited to synthesize self-supported hierarchical nanoarchitectures by gas phase nucleation and sequential attachment of defective molybdenum sulfide clusters. The physics of the process are studied by in situ diagnostics and correlated to the properties of the resulting electrocatalyst. The as-synthesized architectures have a disordered nanocrystalline structure, with nanodomains of bent, defective S-Mo-S layers embedded in an amorphous matrix, with excess sulfur and segregated molybdenum particles. Oxygen incorporation in this structure fosters the creation of amorphous oxide/oxysulfide nanophases with high electrical conductivity, enabling fast electron transfer to the active sites. The combined effect of the nanocrystalline pristine structure and the surface oxidation enhances the performance leading to small overpotentials, very fast kinetics (35.1 mV dec-1 Tafel slope) and remarkable long-term stability for continuous operation up to -1 A cm-2. This work shows possible new avenues in catalytic design arising from a non-equilibrium technique as PLD and the importance of structural and chemical control to improve the HER performance of MoS-based catalysts.

RESUMEN

Objective- PAR4 (protease-activated receptor 4), one of the thrombin receptors in human platelets, has emerged as a promising target for the treatment of arterial thrombotic disease. Previous studies implied that thrombin exosite II, known as a binding site for heparin, may be involved in thrombin-induced PAR4 activation. In the present study, a heparin octasaccharide analog containing the thrombin exosite II-binding domain of heparin was chemically synthesized and investigated for anti-PAR4 effect. Approach and Results- PAR4-mediated platelet aggregation was examined using either thrombin in the presence of a PAR1 antagonist or γ-thrombin, which selectively activates PAR4. SCH-28 specifically inhibits PAR4-mediated platelet aggregation, as well as the signaling events downstream of PAR4 in response to thrombin. Moreover, SCH-28 prevents thrombin-induced ß-arrestin recruitment to PAR4 but not PAR1 in Chinese Hamster Ovary-K1 cells using a commercial enzymatic complementation assay. Compared with heparin, SCH-28 is more potent in inhibiting PAR4-mediated platelet aggregation but has no significant anticoagulant activity. In an in vitro thrombosis model, SCH-28 reduces thrombus formation under whole blood arterial flow conditions. Conclusions- SCH-28, a synthetic small-molecular and nonanticoagulant heparin analog, inhibits thrombin-induced PAR4 activation by interfering with thrombin exosite II, a mechanism of action distinct from other PAR4 inhibitors that target the receptor. The characteristics of SCH-28 provide a new strategy for targeting PAR4 with the potential for the treatment of arterial thrombosis.

RESUMEN

A two-dimensional (2D) heterobilayer system consisting of MoS2 on WSe2, deposited on epitaxial graphene, is studied by scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy at temperatures of 5 and 80 K. A moiré pattern is observed, arising from lattice mismatch of 3.7% between the MoS2 and WSe2. Significant energy shifts are observed in tunneling spectra observed at the maxima of the moiré corrugation, as compared with spectra obtained at corrugation minima, consistent with prior work. Furthermore, at the minima of the moiré corrugation, sharp peaks in the spectra at energies near the band edges are observed for spectra acquired at 5 K. The peaks correspond to discrete states that are confined within the moiré unit cells. Conductance mapping is employed to reveal the detailed structure of the wave functions of the states. For measurements at 80 K, the sharp peaks in the spectra are absent, and conductance maps of the band edges reveal little structure.

RESUMEN

IL-36 cytokines are proinflammatory and have an important role in innate and adaptive immunity, but the role of IL-36 signaling in renal tubulointerstitial lesions (TILs), a major prognostic feature of renal inflammation and fibrosis, remains undetermined. In this study, increased IL-36α expression detected in renal biopsy specimens and urine samples from patients with renal TILs correlated with renal function impairment. We confirmed the increased expression of IL-36α in the renal tubular epithelial cells of a mouse model of unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO) and related cell models using mechanically induced pressure, oxidative stress, or high mobility group box 1. In contrast, the kidneys of IL-36 receptor (IL-36R) knockout mice exhibit attenuated TILs after UUO. Compared with UUO-treated wild-type mice, UUO-treated IL-36 knockout mice exhibited markedly reduced NLRP3 inflammasome activation and macrophage/T cell infiltration in the kidney and T cell activation in the renal draining lymph nodes. In vitro, recombinant IL-36α facilitated NLRP3 inflammasome activation in renal tubular epithelial cells, macrophages, and dendritic cells and enhanced dendritic cell-induced T cell proliferation and Th17 differentiation. Furthermore, deficiency of IL-23, which was diminished in IL-36R knockout UUO mice, also reduced renal TIL formation in UUO mice. In wild-type mice, administration of an IL-36R antagonist after UUO reproduced the results obtained in UUO-treated IL-36R knockout mice. We propose that IL-36 signaling contributes to the pathogenesis of renal TILs through the activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome and IL-23/IL-17 axis.

RESUMEN

The spectrum of two-dimensional (2D) and layered materials 'beyond graphene' offers a remarkable platform to study new phenomena in condensed matter physics. Among these materials, layered hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), with its wide bandgap energy (∼5.0-6.0 eV), has clearly established that 2D nitrides are key to advancing 2D devices. A gap, however, remains between the theoretical prediction of 2D nitrides 'beyond hBN' and experimental realization of such structures. Here we demonstrate the synthesis of 2D gallium nitride (GaN) via a migration-enhanced encapsulated growth (MEEG) technique utilizing epitaxial graphene. We theoretically predict and experimentally validate that the atomic structure of 2D GaN grown via MEEG is notably different from reported theory. Moreover, we establish that graphene plays a critical role in stabilizing the direct-bandgap (nearly 5.0 eV), 2D buckled structure. Our results provide a foundation for discovery and stabilization of 2D nitrides that are difficult to prepare via traditional synthesis.

RESUMEN

The functional activities of the tumor suppressor promyelocytic leukemia protein (PML) are mostly associated with its nuclear location. In the present study, we discovered an unexpected role of PML in NLRP3 inflammasome activation. In PML-deficient macrophages, the production of IL-1ß was strongly impaired. The expression of pro-IL-1ß, NLRP3, ASC, and procaspase-1 was not affected in Pml(-/-) macrophages. PML deficiency selectively reduced the processing of procaspase-1. We further showed that PML is required for the assembly of the NLRP3 inflammasome in reconstitution experiment. All PML isoforms were capable of stimulating NLRP3 inflammasome activation. In Pml(-/-) macrophages, the generation of reactive oxygen species and release of mitochondrial DNA were decreased. The involvement of PML in inflammasome activation constitutes an important activity of PML and reveals a new mechanism underlying the inflammasome activation. In addition, downregulation of PML by arsenic trioxide suppressed monosodium urate (MSU)-induced IL-1ß production, suggesting that targeting to PML could be used to treat NLRP3 inflammasome-associated diseases.

RESUMEN

Heterogeneous engineering of two-dimensional layered materials, including metallic graphene and semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides, presents an exciting opportunity to produce highly tunable electronic and optoelectronic systems. In order to engineer pristine layers and their interfaces, epitaxial growth of such heterostructures is required. We report the direct growth of crystalline, monolayer tungsten diselenide (WSe2) on epitaxial graphene (EG) grown from silicon carbide. Raman spectroscopy, photoluminescence, and scanning tunneling microscopy confirm high-quality WSe2 monolayers, whereas transmission electron microscopy shows an atomically sharp interface, and low energy electron diffraction confirms near perfect orientation between WSe2 and EG. Vertical transport measurements across the WSe2/EG heterostructure provides evidence that an additional barrier to carrier transport beyond the expected WSe2/EG band offset exists due to the interlayer gap, which is supported by theoretical local density of states (LDOS) calculations using self-consistent density functional theory (DFT) and nonequilibrium Green's function (NEGF).

RESUMEN

Two-dimensional (2D) materials are popular for fundamental physics study and technological applications in next-generation electronics, spintronics, and optoelectronic devices due to a wide range of intriguing physical and chemical properties. Recently, the family of 2D metals and 2D semiconductors has been expanding rapidly because they offer properties once unknown to us. One of the challenges to fully access their properties is poor stability in ambient conditions. In the first half of this Review, we briefly summarize common methods of preparing 2D metals and highlight some recent approaches for making air-stable 2D metals. Additionally, we introduce the physicochemical properties of some air-stable 2D metals recently explored. The second half discusses the air stability and oxidation mechanisms of 2D transition metal dichalcogenides and some elemental 2D semiconductors. Their air stability can be enhanced by optimizing growth temperature, substrates, and precursors during 2D material growth to improve material quality, which will be discussed. Other methods, including doping, postgrowth annealing, and encapsulation of insulators that can suppress defects and isolate the encapsulated samples from the ambient environment, will be reviewed.

RESUMEN

Angiogenesis is a key process for the proliferation and metastatic spread of cancer cells. Anti-angiogenic peptides (AAPs), with the capability of inhibiting angiogenesis, are promising candidates in cancer treatment. We propose AAPL, a sequence-based predictor to identify AAPs with machine learning models of improved prediction accuracy. Each peptide sequence was transformed to a vector of 4335 numeric values according to 58 different feature types, followed by a heuristic algorithm for feature selection. Next, the hyperparameters of six machine learning models were optimized with respect to the feature subset. We considered two datasets, one with entire peptide sequences and the other with 15 amino acids from peptide N-termini. AAPL achieved Matthew's correlation coefficients of 0.671 and 0.756 for independent tests based on the two datasets, respectively, outperforming existing predictors by a range of 5.3% to 24.6%. Further analyses show that AAPL yields higher prediction accuracy for peptides with more hydrophobic residues, and fewer hydrophilic and charged residues. The source code of AAPL is available at https://github.com/yunzheng2002/Anti-angiogenic .

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The effect of bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC) and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) combination in enhancing graft maturation and tendon-bone tunnel interfacial healing after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction remains unclear. We hypothesised that BMAC and PRP combination could lead to better clinical results and better graft maturation/interface healing than PRP alone or conventional ACL reconstruction without any other biologic augmentation. METHODS: In this randomised double-blind prospective study, patients undergoing ACL reconstruction surgery were randomly assigned into three groups: (1) control group (without any biologic augmentation), (2) PRP treatment group, and (3) combined BMAC and PRP (BMAC + PRP) group. Moreover, they were evaluated using the clinical functional score, laxity examination, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) analysis. RESULTS: No significant difference was observed in the improvement of functional scores among groups. However, laxity improvement at 24 weeks showed a significant difference with the BMAC + PRP group having the lowest laxity. MRI analysis showed no significant change in whole graft maturation among groups. In particular, the BMAC + PRP group showed delayed signal peak and higher graft signal at 24 weeks compared with the other two groups; however, the difference was not significant. With regard to tendon-bone interfacial healing, the BMAC + PRP group showed significantly wider tendon-bone interface in the femoral bone tunnel at 24 weeks compared with the other two groups. Moreover, the BMAC + PRP group showed significantly higher peri-tunnel edema signal in the femoral bone tunnel at 12 weeks compared with the other two groups. CONCLUSION: PRP alone and BMAC and PRP combination showed limited enhancing effect in clinical function, graft maturation and tendon-bone interfacial healing compared with control (no additional treatment). When BMAC is used in ACL reconstruction, the possibility of greater inflammation in the early stage to graft maturation and bone tunnel healing should be considered.

RESUMEN

Catalytic thermochemical conversion offers a sustainable method to upgrade oil-based feedstocks into highly valuable biofuel, aligning with the modern biorefinery concept. Herein, a series of IrRe/SAPO-11 catalysts with different Ir to Re molar ratios compared to reference Ir/SAPO-11 and Re/SAPO-11 catalysts was prepared using a wetness impregnation method. These catalysts were used for the direct production of sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs) via efficient hydrodeoxygenation and hydroisomerization of triglycerides. The catalyst screening confirmed that the optimum IrRe/SAPO-11 catalyst, with an equivalent Ir to Re molar ratio, exhibited the highest hydrodeoxygenation activity under milder operation conditions than the conditions used in previous studies. Increasing the reaction temperature up to 330 °C enhanced the formation of iso-alkanes in the liquid product, achieving a freezing point of -31.4 °C without additional cold flow improvers. Furthermore, a long-term stability experiment demonstrated that the developed Ir-Re system exhibited exceptional performance over 150 h. This excellent catalytic activity and stability of the bifunctional IrRe/SAPO-11 catalyst was owing to its suitable interface between metallic and oxide sites, mixed mesoporous structures, reduced catalyst size, and increased Lewis acid ratio, as confirmed by our comprehensive characterizations.

RESUMEN

Many applications of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) involve transfer to functional substrates that can strongly impact their optical and electronic properties. We investigate the impact that substrate interactions have on free carrier densities and defect-related excitonic (XD) emission from MoS2 monolayers grown by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition. C-plane sapphire substrates mimic common hydroxyl-terminated substrates. We demonstrate that transferring MoS2 monolayers to pristine c-plane sapphire dramatically increases the free electron density within MoS2 layers, quenches XD emission, and accelerates exciton recombination at the optical band edge. In contrast, transferring MoS2 monolayers onto inert hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) has no measurable influence on these properties. Our findings demonstrate the promise of utilizing substrate engineering to control charge doping interactions and to quench broad XD background emission features that can influence the purity of single photon emitters in TMDs being developed for quantum photonic applications.

RESUMEN

Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides have strong intracovalent bonding. When stacked in multilayers, however, weak van der Waals interactions dominate interlayer mechanical coupling and, thus, influence their lattice vibrations. This study presents the frequency evolution of interlayer phonons in twisted WS2 bilayers, highly subject to the twist angle. The twist angle between the layers is controlled to modulate the spacing between the layers, which, in turn, affects the interlayer coupling that is probed by Raman spectroscopy. The shifts of high-frequency E2g1 (Γ) and A1g (Γ) phonon modes and their frequency separations are dependent on the twist angle, reflecting the correlation between the interlayer mechanical coupling and twist angle. In this work, we fabricated large-area, twisted bilayer WS2 with a clean interface with controlled twist angles. Polarized Raman spectroscopy identified new interlayer modes, which were not previously reported, depending on the twist angle. The appearance of breathing modes in Raman phonon spectra provides evidence of strong interlayer coupling in bilayer structures. We confirm that the twist angle can alter the exciton and trion dynamics of bilayers as indicated by the photoluminescence peak shift. These large-area controlled twist angle samples have practical applications in optoelectronic device fabrication and twistronics.

RESUMEN

Synthesis of large-area transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) with controlled orientation is a significant challenge to their industrial applications. Substrate plays a vital role in determining the final quality of monolayer materials grown via the chemical vapor deposition process by controlling their orientation, crystal structure, and grain boundary. This study determined the binding energy and equilibrium distance for tungsten diselenide (WSe2) monolayers on crystalline and amorphous silicon dioxide and aluminum dioxide substrates. Differently oriented WSe2 monolayers are considered to investigate the role of the substrate in the orientation, binding strength, and equilibrium distance. This study can pave the way to synthesizing high-quality two-dimensional (2D) materials for electronic and chemical applications.
