RESUMEN

High-power phosphor-converted white light-emitting diodes (hp-WLEDs) have been widely involved in modern society as outdoor lighting sources. In these devices, due to the Joule effect, the high applied currents cause high operation temperatures (>500 K). Under these conditions, most phosphors lose their emission, an effect known as thermal quenching (TQ). Here, we introduce a zero-dimensional (0D) metal halide, Rb3InCl6:xSb3+, as a suitable anti-TQ phosphor offering robust anti-TQ behavior up to 500 K. We ascribe this behavior of the metal halide to two factors: (1) a compensation process via thermally activated energy transfer from structural defects to emissive centers and (2) an intrinsic structural rigidity of the isolated octahedra in the 0D structure. The anti-TQ phosphor-based WLEDs can stably work at a current of 2000 mA. The low synthesis cost and nontoxic composition reported here can herald a new generation of anti-TQ phosphors for hp-WLED.

RESUMEN

Lithium metal batteries are regarded as promising candidates for next-generation energy storage systems. However, their anodes are susceptible to interfacial instability due to significant volume changes, which significantly impacts the cycle life of lithium metal batteries. Here, a rapid method for the fabrication of 3D-hosts with interface modified layers is reported. A simple infiltration and heating process enables the transformation of copper foam into Zn-BDC-modified copper foam within 1 min, rendering it suitable for use as a current collector for lithium metal anodes. The Zn-BDC nanosheets with high lithiophilicity are uniformly distributed on the surface of the current collector, facilitating the uniform deposition of lithium and reducing the volume change. Consequently, the half cell exhibits a remarkably low overpotential (26 mV) at a current-density of 4 mA cm-2 and is cycled stably for 1000 h. Furthermore, it demonstrates a significant enhancement in performance in the LiFePO4 full cell. This study provides a crucial reference on the connection between the interfacial modification of the current collector and the lithium deposition behavior, which promotes the practicalization of lithium metal anodes.

RESUMEN

It is extremely crucial to design and match high-quality cathode and anode for achieving high-performance asymmetric supercapacitors (ASCs). Herein, Co3 (PO4 )2 @NiCo-LDH/Ni foam (CP@NCOH/NF) cathode with hierarchical morphology and graphene hydrogel/Fe-Ni phosphide/Ni foam (GH/FNP/NF) anode with the robust and porous structure are elaborately designed and prepared, respectively. Owing to their unique and profitable structures, both CP@NCOH/NF and GH/FNP/NF electrodes yield the superior capacity (10760 and 2236 mC cm-2 at 2 mA cm-2 , respectively), good rate capability (63% retention at 200 mA cm-2 and 52% retention at 50 mA cm-2 , respectively), and excellent cycling stability (72% and 74% retention after 10 000 cycles, respectively). Benefiting from their matchable electrochemical performances, the configured solid-state CP@NCOH/NF//GH/FNP/NF ASC outputs both competitive energy density (80.2 Wh kg-1 /4.1 mWh cm-3 ) and power density (14563 W kg-1 /750 mW cm-3 ), companied by remarkable cyclability (71% retention after 10 000 cycles), manifesting its great promise for large-scale integrated energy-storage system.

RESUMEN

Compared to traditional methods, three/four-dimensional (3D/4D) printing technologies allow rapid prototyping and mass customization, which are ideal for preparing nano/microstructures of soft polymer materials. Poly (lactic acid) (PLA) is a biopolymer material widely used in additive manufacturing (AM) because of its biocompatibility and biodegradability. Unfortunately, owing to its intrinsically poor nucleation ability, a PLA product is usually in an amorphous state after industrial processing, leading to some undesirable properties such as a barrier property and low thermal resistance. Crystallization mediation offers a most practical way to improve the properties of PLA products. Herein, we summarize and discuss 3D/4D printing technologies in the processing of PLA nano/microstructures, focusing on crystallization principles and practical applications including bio-inspired structures, flexible electronics and biomedical engineering mainly reported in the last five years. Moreover, the challenges and prospects of 3D/4D printing technologies in the fabrication of high-performance PLA materials nano/microstructures will also be discussed.

RESUMEN

Introduction: The aim of the study was to detect the saliva chemokine (C-X-C motif) ligand 13 (CXCL13), macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF), and interleukin 35 (IL-35) levels in patients with primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) and pSS-associated interstitial lung disease (pSS-ILD), and to explore the relationship between CXCL13, MIF, IL-35 levels, and disease severity. Material and methods: ESSDAI score was used to evaluate the disease activity of pSS patients, and the levels of CXCL13, MIF and IL-35 in saliva of subjects were detected and analyzed, and the relationship between CXCL13, MIF, IL-35 and the occurrence of pSS was evaluated. Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to analyze the correlation between CXCL13, MIF, IL-35 and ESSDAI score. ROC curve analysis was conducted to assess the diagnostic value of CXCL13, MIF, IL-35 and their combined application in pSS. Results: The levels of CXCL13, MIF, and IL-35 in saliva were positively correlated with ESSDAI score. Saliva CXCL13 and IL-35 are risk factors for the development of pSS into pSS-ILD. The ROC curve shows that the combination of saliva CXCL13, MIF and IL-35 has the highest diagnostic efficiency for pSS-ILD. Conclusions: CXCL13, MIF and IL-35 are related to the activity of pSS, and the combined diagnosis of these three indexes is expected to be an important method to predict the occurrence and development of pSS.

RESUMEN

The problem of nosocomial infections caused by bacterial growth on material surfaces is an urgent threat to public health. Although numerous materials and methods have been explored to fight against infections, the methods are complicated and the materials are slightly toxic. It is highly desirable to develop an antibacterial strategy that kills bacteria effectively without drug resistance and cytotoxicity. Herein, we present a synergistic antibacterial polylactic acid (PLA) surface with superhydrophobic antibacterial adhesion and photodynamic bactericidal activity. Initially, the surface displayed low-adhesion superhydrophobicity and resisted most bacterial adhesion. Furthermore, completely non-toxic chlorophyll possessed excellent photodynamic bactericidal properties under non-toxic visible light, which was incorporated into micro-/nanoscale PLA surfaces. We achieved efficient antibacterial activity using completely non-toxic materials and a facile non-solvent-induced phase separation process. This non-toxic, simple, good biocompatible, and no drug-resistant strategy has great advantages in combating bacterial infections.

RESUMEN

Objectives: To investigate the effects of a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1RA) liraglutide on podocytes, inflammation, and oxidative stress in patients with diabetic nephropathy (DN). Methods: Eighty-four DN patients treated by the department of endocrinology of the Affiliated Hospital of Hebei University during December 2017 and March 2019 were randomly assigned to a control group and a treatment group (n=42, respectively), with the control group prescribed with conventional DN medications and the treatment group receiving liraglutide treatment in addition to the conventional therapy. The course of treatment lasted for 12 weeks. hemoglobin A1c (HbA1C), body mass index (BMI), total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), urinary albumin excretion rate (UAER), urine podocalyxin (PCX), urine nephrin, as well as inflammation and oxidative stress markers such as tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and malondialdehyde (MDA) were measured pre- and post-treatment for intergroup comparison. Results: After 12 weeks of treatment, HbA1C, BMI, TC, and TG in both groups were reduced in comparison with the pre-treatment levels, with the levels in the treatment group lower than in the control group (p<0.05); reduced levels of UAER, PCX, and nephrin were detected in the two groups, with the treatment group exhibiting a significant reduction in these markers compared with the control group (p<0.05); the 12-week treatment led to decreases in the TNF-α, MCP-1, and MDA levels in both groups, with the decline in the treatment group exceeding that in the control group, whereas both groups had an increased level of GSH-Px, with the level in the treatment group higher than that in the control group, and the differences were statistically significant (p<0.05, respectively). Conclusions: Liraglutide protects the kidneys and improves DN by inhibiting inflammation and oxidative stress, reducing urinary albumin excretion and podocyte damage and supporting renal function in addition to its hypoglycemic properties.

RESUMEN

The directed self-assembly of electronic circuits using functional metallic inks has attracted intensive attention because of its high compatibility with extensive applications ranging from soft printed circuits to wearable devices. However, the typical resolution of conventional self-assembly technologies is not sufficient for practical applications in the rapidly evolving additively manufactured electronics (AMEs) market. Herein, an ultrahigh-resolution self-assembly strategy is reported based on a dual-surface-architectonics (DSA) process. Inspired by the Tokay gecko, the approach is to endow submicrometer-scale surface regions with strong adhesion force toward metallic inks via a series of photoirradiation and chemical polarization treatments. The prepared DSA surface enables the directed self-assembly of electronic circuits with unprecedented 600 nm resolution, suppresses the coffee-ring effect, and results in a reliable conductivity of 14.1 ± 0.6 µΩ cm. Furthermore, the DSA process enables the layer-by-layer fabrication of fully printed organic thin-film transistors with a short channel length of 1 µm, which results in a large on-off ratio of 106 and a high field-effect mobility of 0.5 cm2  V-1  s-1 .

RESUMEN

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have attracted great attention due to their high theoretical energy density. The rapid redox conversion of lithium polysulfides (LiPS) is effective for solving the serious shuttle effect and improving the utilization of active materials. The functional design of the separator interface with fast charge transfer and active catalytic sites is desirable for accelerating the conversion of intermediates. Herein, a graphene-wrapped MnCO3 nanowire (G@MC) was prepared and utilized to engineer the separator interface. G@MC with active Mn2+ sites can effectively anchor the LiPS by forming the Mn-S chemical bond according to our theoretical calculation results. In addition, the catalytic Mn2+ sites and conductive graphene layer of G@MC could accelerate the reversible conversion of LiPS via the spontaneous "self-redox" reaction and the rapid electron transfer in electrochemical process. As a result, the G@MC-based battery exhibits only 0.038 % capacity decay (per cycle) after 1000 cycles at 2.0 C. This work affords new insights for designing the integrated functional interface for stable Li-S batteries.

RESUMEN

The development of cationic polymers as non-viral gene vectors has been hurdled by their high toxicity, thus degradable and biocompatible polymers are urgently demanded. Herein, five polyesters (B3a-B3e) were synthesized based on the ring-opening copolymerization between α-allyl-δ-valerolactone and δ-valerolactone derivatives decorated with alkyl or alkoxyl chains of different lengths, followed by the modification with 1,5,9-triazacyclododecyl ([12]aneN3) through thiol-ene click reactions. The five polyesters effectively condensed DNA into nanoparticles. Of them, B3a with a shorter alkyl chain and B3d with more positive charged units showed stronger DNA condensing performance and can completely retard the migration of DNA at N/P = 1.6 in the presence of DOPE. B3b/DOPE with a longer alkyl chain exhibited the highest transfection efficiency in HeLa cells with 1.8 times of 25 kDa PEI, while B3d/DOPE with more positive charged units exhibited highest transfection efficiency in A549 cells with 2.3 times of 25 kDa PEI. B3b/DOPE and B3d/DOPE successfully delivered pEGFP into zebrafish, which was superior to 25 kDa PEI (1.5 folds and 1.1 folds, respectively). The cytotoxicity measurements proved that the biocompatibility of these polyesters was better than 25 kDa PEI, due to their degradable property in acid environment. The results indicated that these cationic polyesters can be developed as potential non-viral gene vectors for DNA delivery.

RESUMEN

Two-photon fluorescent Acenaphtho[1,2-b]quinoxaline (ANQ) and the hydrophilic di-(triazole-[12]aneN3) moieties were combined through an alkyl chain (ANQ-A-M) or a ß-hairpin motif with two aromatic γ-amino acid residues (ANQ-H-M) to explore their capabilities for in vitro and in vivo gene delivery and tracing. ANQ-A-M and ANQ-H-M showed the same maximum absorption at 420 nm, and their fluorescent intensities around 650 nm were varied in different solvents and became poor in the protic solvents. Gel electrophoresis assays indicated that both compounds completely retarded the migration of pDNA at 20 µM in the presence of DOPE. However, the DNA condensation with ANQ-H-M was not reversible, and the particle size of the corresponding complexes were larger indicated from the SEM and DLS measurements. In vitro transfections indicated ANQ-A-M/DOPE achieved Luciferase and GFP expressions were to be 7.9- and 5.7-fold of those by Lipo2000 in A549 cells respectively. However, ANQ-H-M showed very poor transfection efficiency in Luciferase expression. With the help of single/two-photon fluorescence imaging it clearly demonstrated that the successful transfection of ANQ-A-M was attributed to its cellular uptake, apparent lysosomal escape, and reversible release of DNA; and the poor transfection of ANQ-H-M was resulted from the aggregation of the DNA complexes which prevented them from the cellular uptake, and also the strong binding ability which is not easy to release DNA. ANQ-A-M/DOPE also exhibited robust gene silencing (83% knockdown of Luciferase) and GFP expression (2.47-fold higher) efficiency compared with Lipo2000 in A549 and zebrafish, respectively. The work demonstrated that the linkage structure between fluorescent and di(triazole-[12]aneN3) played the important role for their gene delivery performance, and that ANQ-A-M represents a vector with the strong transfection efficiency in vitro and in vivo as well as the efficient real time bioimaging properties, which is potential for the development in biomedical research.

RESUMEN

The interleukin-17 (IL-17) family is a relatively new family of cytokines consisting of 6 related factors (IL-17A-IL-17F), while the receptor family consists of 5 members: IL-17RA-IL-17RE. IL-17A is the prototype member of this family, which is also the signature cytokine of T helper 17 (Th17) cells. Th17 cells are involved in the development of autoimmune disease, inflammation, and tumors. Although IL-17D is similar to IL-17A in its ability to induce inflammatory cytokine production, there are fewer studies on IL-17D. Recently, the role of IL-17D in tumors and infections has attracted our attention. Some knowledge of function of IL-17D has been gained by studies using nonmammalian species. In this review, we introduce the structural characteristics, expression patterns, and biological characteristics of IL-17D along with its potential function in the pathogenesis of disease.

RESUMEN

The accumulation of ice on surfaces brings dangerous and costly problems to our daily life. Thus, it would be desirable to design anti-icing coatings for various surfaces. We report a durable anti-icing coating based on mussel-inspired chemistry, which is enabled via fabricating a liquid water layer, achieved by modifying solid substrates with the highly water absorbing property of sodium alginate. Dopamine, the main component of the mussel adhesive protein, is introduced to anchor the sodium alginate in order to render the coating applicable to all types of solid surfaces. Simultaneously, it serves as the cross-linking agent for sodium alginate; thus, the cross-linking degree of the coatings could be easily varied. The non-freezable and freezable water in the coatings with different cross-link degrees all remain liquid-like at subzero conditions and synergistically fulfill the aim of decreasing the temperature of ice nucleation. These anti-icing coatings display excellent stability even under harsh conditions. Furthermore, these coatings can be applied to almost all types of solid surfaces and have great promise in practical applications.

RESUMEN

Organic nonvolatile transistor memory with synthetic polypeptide derivatives as dielectric was fabricated by a solution process. When only poly (γ-benzyl-l-glutamate) (PBLG) was used as dielectric, the device did not show obvious hysteresis in transfer curves. However, PBLG blended with PMMA led to a remarkable increase in memory window up to 20 V. The device performance was observed to remarkably depend on the blend ratio. This study suggests the crystal structure and the molecular alignment significantly affect the electrical performance in transistor-type memory devices, thereby provides an alternative to prepare nonvolatile memory with polymer dielectrics.

RESUMEN

The solution-processing fabrication of superhydrophobic surfaces is currently intriguing, owing to high-efficiency, low cost, and energy-consuming. Here, a facile nonsolvent-assisted process was proposed for the fabrication of the multi-scaled surface roughness in polylactide (PLA) films, thereby resulting in a significant transformation in the surface wettability from intrinsic hydrophilicity to superhydrophobicity. Moreover, it was found that the surface topographical structure of PLA films can be manipulated by varying the compositions of the PLA solutions. And the samples showed superhydrophobic surfaces as well as high melting enthalpy and crystallinity. In particular, a high contact angle of 155.8° together with a high adhesive force of 184 µN was yielded with the assistance of a multi-nonsolvent system, which contributed to the co-existence of micro-/nano-scale hierarchical structures.

RESUMEN

Single crystal sapphire and diamond surfaces are used as planar, atomically flat insulating surfaces, for the deposition of the diacetylene compound 10,12-nonacosadiynoic acid. The surface assembly is compared with results on hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) and MoS2 surfaces. A perfectly flat-lying monolayer of 10,12-nonacosadiynoic acid self-assembles on h-BN like on HOPG and MoS2. On sapphire and oxidized diamond surfaces, we observed assemblies of standing-up molecular layers. Surface assembly is driven by surface electrostatic dipoles. Surface polarity is partially controlled using a hydrogenated diamond surface or totally screened by the deposition of a graphene layer on the sapphire surface. This results in a perfectly flat and organized SAM on graphene, which is ready for on-surface polymerization of long and isolated molecular wires under ambient conditions.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To explore the association of insulin resistance and ß cell function with lipid metabolism in middle-aged and elderly Hui and Han populations. METHODS: A total of 1000 subjects age over 40 years were recruited from five urban communities in Yinchuan and Wuzhong cities of Ningxia. The composition ratio between Hui and Han nationality was 1:2. A questionnaire-based survey was performed. Physical examinations were carried out to measure the height, body mass, waistline, and hipline. The levels of triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), blood uric acid (BUA), fasting blood glucose and insulin were measured. The boby mass index (BMI), waist-hip ratio (WHR), and secretion related index including insulin resistance index (IR), insulin sensitivity index (IAI), and beta cell function index (HBCI) were calculated. RESULTS: The BMI, WHR, IAI, HBCI, and the prevalence rate of diabetes in Hui nationality were significantly higher than those in Han nationality (P<0.01). The levels of BUA, fasting blood glucose, TC, and IR in Han nationality were significantly lower than those in Hui nationality (P<0.01). In Hui populations, TG, BMI, WHR, and BUA were positively correlated with IR (r=0.234, r=0.193, r=0.143, and r=0.129, respectively; P<0.01) and were negatively correlated with IAI (r=-0.234, r=-0.193, r=-0.143, r=-0.129, respectively; P<0.01), whereas TC was negatively correlated with HBCI (r=-0.169, P<0.01). In Han populations, TC, TG, BMI, WHR, and BUA were positively correlated with IR (r=0.140, r=0.257, r=0.288, r=0.163, r=0.104, P<0.01) and negatively correlated with IAI (r=-0.140, r=-0.257, r=-0.288, r=-0.163, and r=-0.104, P<0.01), whereas BMI was negatively correlated with HBCI (r=-0.111, P<0.01). After the influential factors such as gender, nationality, and age were adjusted, the TC, TG, BMI, WHR, BUA levels were positively correlated with IR (r=0.109, r=0.256, r=0.253, r=0.139, and r=0.142, P<0.01) and negatively correlated with IAI (r=-0.109, r=-0.256, r=-0.253, r=-0.139, and r=-0.142, P<0.01). TC and BMI were negatively correlated with HBCI (r=-0.113, r=-0.086, P<0.01). TG and BMI were independently associated with IR and IAI (r=0.218, r=0.182, r=-0.218, r=-0.182), while TC and BMI were independently associated with HBCI (r=-0.113, r=-0.086). CONCLUSIONS: The distributions of TC, TG, BMI, WHR, BUA, IR, IAI, and HBCI differ between Han and Hui populations. The development of insulin resistance is closely related with the increased levels of TC, TG, BMI, WHR, and BUA. However, the HBCI increases with the increased level of TC and BMI. TG and BMI may be related with insulin resistance. Also, TC and BMI may affect the secretion function of ß cells.

RESUMEN

Self-organizing n-type hexaazatrinaphthylenes (HATNAs) with various bay-located side chains have been synthesized. The HATNA derivatives are able to form long-range molecular columns with self-directed growth directions. In particular, alkyl-substituted HATNAs showed in-plane molecular columns with axes parallel to substrates, whereas the columnar orientation of the HATNAs with alkylethynyl or alkylthio groups strongly depended on the length of the introduced side chains. Interestingly, the derivative with octylthio chains exhibited out-of-plane molecular columns, in which electron mobility of up to 10(-3)  cm(2) V(-1) s(-1) was determined through the time-of-flight technique, highlighting the fact that such molecular columns based on bay-substituted HATNAs are promising n-type semiconductors for device applications.

RESUMEN

Eight dimethylaminomethyl-substituted curcumin derivatives were designed and synthesized. The antioxidant test revealed that the synthesized compounds had higher free radical scavenging activity towards both 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl free radicals (DPPH) (IC50 1.5-29.9µM) and galvinoxyl radicals (IC50 4.9-41.1µM) than the lead compound curcumin. Besides, compound 3a could effectively inhibit the Aß self-aggregation in vitro. Investigated in phosphate-buffered solutions (pH=7.4) in the presence or absence of 0.1% FBS 3a showed a good stability while curcumin did not. Furthermore, 3a showed a good lipophilicity (logP=3.48), suggesting a potential ability to penetrate the blood-brain-barrier. The aqueous solubility of the hydrochloride salt of 3a (16.7mg/mL) has also been significantly improved as compared with curcumin (<0.1mg/mL).

RESUMEN

Antifreeze (glyco) proteins [AF(G)Ps], which are widely present in various extreme microorganisms, can control the formation and growth of ice crystals. Given the significance of cryogenic technology in biomedicine, climate science, electronic energy, and other fields of research, scientists are quite interested in the development and synthesis high-efficiency bionic antifreeze protein materials, particularly to reproduce their dynamic ice shaping (DIS) characteristics. Single ice crystal shaping materials, a promising class of ice-controlling materials, can alter the morphology and growth rate of ice crystals at low temperatures. This review aims to highlight the development of single ice crystal shaping materials and provide a brief comparison between a series of natural and bionic synthetic materials with DIS ability, which include AF(G)Ps, polymers, salts, and nanomaterials. Additionally, we summarize their applications in cryopreservation. Finally, this paper presents the current challenges and prospects encountered in developing high-efficiency and practical single ice crystal shaping materials. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: The formation and growth of ice crystals hold a significant importance to an incredibly broad range of fields. Therefore, the design and fabrication of the single ice crystal shaping materials have gained the increasing popularity due to its key role in dynamic ice shaping (DIS) characteristics. Especially, single ice crystal shaping materials are considered one of the most promising candidates as ice inhibitors, presenting tremendous prospects for enhancing cryopreservation. In this work, we focus on the molecular characteristics, structure-function relationships, and DIS mechanisms of typical natural and biomimetic synthetic materials. This review may provide inspiration for the design and preparation of single ice crystal shaping materials and give guidance for the development of effective cryopreservation agent.
