RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The Guangzhou Nutrition and Health Study (GNHS) aims to assess the determinants of metabolic disease in nutritional aspects, as well as other environmental and genetic factors, and explore possible biomarkers and mechanisms with multi-omics integration. METHODS: The population-based sample of adults in Guangzhou, China (baseline: 40-83 years old; n = 5118) was followed up about every 3 years. All will be tracked via on-site follow-up and health information systems. We assessed detailed information on lifestyle factors, physical activities, dietary assessments, psychological health, cognitive function, body measurements, and muscle function. Instrument tests included dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry scanning, carotid artery and liver ultrasonography evaluations, vascular endothelial function evaluation, upper-abdomen and brain magnetic resonance imaging, and 14-d real-time continuous glucose monitoring tests. We also measured multi-omics, including host genome-wide genotyping, serum metabolome and proteome, gut microbiome (16S rRNA sequencing, metagenome, and internal transcribed spacer 2 sequencing), and fecal metabolome and proteome. RESULTS: The baseline surveys were conducted from 2008 to 2015. Now, we have completed 3 waves. The 3rd and 4th follow-ups have started but have yet to end. A total of 5118 participants aged 40-83 took part in the study. The median age at baseline was approximately 59.0 years and the proportion of female participants was about 69.4%. Among all the participants, 3628 (71%) completed at least one on-site follow-up with a median duration of 9.48 years. CONCLUSION: The cohort will provide data that have been influential in establishing the role of nutrition in metabolic diseases with multi-omics.

RESUMEN

This study evaluated the association between inflammatory diets as measured by the Dietary Inflammatory index (DII), inflammation biomarkers and the development of preeclampsia among the Chinese population. We followed the reporting guidelines of the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology statement for observational studies. A total of 466 preeclampsia cases aged over 18 years were recruited between March 2016 and June 2019, and 466 healthy controls were 1:1 ratio matched by age (±3 years), week of gestation (±1 week) and gestational diabetes mellitus. The energy-adjusted DII (E-DII) was computed based on dietary intake assessed using a seventy-nine item semiquantitative FFQ. Inflammatory biomarkers were analysed by ELISA kits. The mean E-DII scores were -0·65 ± 1·58 for cases and -1·19 ± 1·47 for controls (P value < 0·001). E-DII scores positively correlated with interferon-γ (r s = 0·194, P value = 0·001) and IL-4 (r s = 0·135, P value = 0·021). After multivariable adjustment, E-DII scores were positively related to preeclampsia risk (Ptrend < 0·001). The highest tertile of E-DII was 2·18 times the lowest tertiles (95 % CI = 1·52, 3·13). The odds of preeclampsia increased by 30 % (95 % CI = 18 %, 43 %, P value < 0·001) for each E-DII score increase. The preeclampsia risk was positively associated with IL-2 (OR = 1·07, 95 % CI = 1·03, 1·11), IL-4 (OR = 1·26, 95 % CI = 1·03, 1·54) and transforming growth factor beta (TGF-ß) (OR = 1·17, 95 % CI = 1·06, 1·29). Therefore, proinflammatory diets, corresponding to higher IL-2, IL-4 and TGF-ß levels, were associated with increased preeclampsia risk.

RESUMEN

The effect of vitamin D (VD) on the risk of preeclampsia (PE) is uncertain. Few of previous studies focused on the relationship between dietary VD intake and PE risk. Therefore, we conducted this 1:1 matched case-control study to explore the association of dietary VD intake and serum VD concentrations with PE risk in Chinese pregnant women. A total of 440 pairs of participants were recruited during March 2016 to June 2019. Dietary information was obtained using a seventy-eight-item semi-quantitative FFQ. Serum concentrations of 25(OH)D2 and 25(OH)D3 were measured by liquid chromatography-tandem MS. Multivariate conditional logistic regression was used to estimate OR and 95 % CI. Restricted cubic splines (RCS) were plotted to evaluate the dose-response relationship of dietary VD intake and serum VD concentrations with PE risk. Compared with the lowest quartile, the OR of the highest quartile were 0·45 (95 % CI 0·29, 0·71, Ptrend = 0·001) for VD dietary intake and 0·26 (95 % CI 0·11, 0·60, Ptrend = 0·003) for serum levels after adjusting for confounders. In addition, the RCS analysis suggested a reverse J-shaped relationship between dietary VD intake and PE risk (P-nonlinearity = 0·02). A similar association was also found between serum concentrations of total 25(OH)D and PE risk (P-nonlinearity = 0·02). In conclusion, this study provides evidence that higher dietary intake and serum levels of VD are associated with the lower risk of PE in Chinese pregnant women.

RESUMEN

The medical usage of Doxorubicin (DOX) as a chemotherapeutic agent is restricted owing to its cardiotoxic properties. This study was designed to explore the effect and underlying mechanisms of Citronellal (CT) on DOX-related cardiotoxicity in rats. Rats were divided into six groups: control, DOX, CT, Lithium chloride (LiCl) (a Na+/H+exchanger-1 [NHE1] activator), DOX + CT, and DOX + CT + LiCl. To induce cardiotoxicity, a cumulative dose of 15 mg/kg DOX was intraperitoneally injected into rats. CT (150 mg/kg) and LiCl (1 mg/kg) were given daily by oral gavage for 6 weeks. CT improved cardiac functional parameters and attenuated the cardiac pathological changes induced by DOX. Further study indicated that CT administration regulated the levels of oxidative stress and apoptosis-related factors and in myocardial tissues, reducing cell per-oxidative damage and apoptosis. Besides this, CT attenuated DOX-induced NHE1 upregulation, and the preventive effects of CT against DOX-induced cardiotoxicity were abrogated by the concurrent administration of LiCl. These results demonstrate that CT could ameliorate DOX-induced cardiotoxicity by inhibiting the NHE1-mediated oxidative stress, apoptosis in rats.

RESUMEN

KEY MESSAGE: Overexpression of AgMYB12 in celery improved the accumulation of apigenin by interacting with the AgFNS gene. Celery is a common vegetable, and its essential characteristic is medicine food homology. A natural flavonoid and a major pharmacological component in celery, apigenin plays an important role in human health. In this study, we isolated a novel R2R3-MYB transcription factor that regulates apigenin accumulation from the celery cultivar 'Jinnan Shiqin' through yeast one-hybrid screening and designated it as AgMYB12. The AgMYB12 protein was located in the nucleus. It showed transcriptional activation activity and bound specifically to the promoter of AgFNS, a gene involved in apigenin biosynthesis. Phylogenetic tree analysis demonstrated that AgMYB12 belongs to the flavonoid branch. It contains two flavonoid-related motifs, SG7 and SG7-2, and shared a highly conserved R2R3 domain with flavonoid-related MYBs. The homologous overexpression of AgMYB12 induced the up-regulation of AgFNS gene expression and accumulation of apigenin and luteolin in celery. Additionally, the expression levels of apigenin biosynthesis-related genes, including AgPAL, AgCHI, AgCHS, Ag4CL, and AgC4H, increased in transgenic celery plants. These results indicated that AgMYB12 acted as a positive regulator of apigenin biosynthesis and activated the expression of AgFNS gene. The current study provides new information about the regulation mechanism of apigenin metabolism in celery and offers a strategy for cultivating the plants with high apigenin content.

RESUMEN

Enantioselective hydroarylation of unactivated terminal akenes constitutes a prominent challenge in organic chemistry. Herein, we reported a Cp*Co(III)-catalyzed asymmetric hydroarylation of unactivated aliphatic terminal alkenes assisted by a new type of tailor-made amino acid ligands. Critical to the chiral induction was the engaging of a novel noncovalent interaction (NCI), which has seldomly been disclosed in the C-H activation area, arising from the molecular recognition among the organocobalt(III) intermediate, the coordinated alkene, and the well-designed chiral ligand. A broad range of C2-alkylated indoles were obtained in high yields and excellent enantioselectivities. DFT calculations revealed the reaction mechanism and elucidated the origins of chiral induction in the stereodetermining alkene insertion step.

RESUMEN

We fabricated the freestanding "core-shell" AgNWs/ Ni mesh electrodes by employing AgNWs solution onto the freestanding Ni-mesh. The combination of AgNWs and Ni mesh resulted in higher electrical conductivity, thereby enhancing the electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness (SE). The hybrid freestanding electrode created highly effective transparent and flexible EMI shielding films, featuring an ultrathin thickness (3 µm), the high optical transparency of 93% at 550 nm, and a SE of 41.5 dB in the X-band, which exceeds that of 30 dB for a freestanding Ni-mesh (94%). We showed that the hybrid freestanding AgNWs/Ni-mesh film is a promising high-performance transparent and flexible EMI shielding material that satisfies the requirements for optoelectronic devices.

RESUMEN

It has been a great challenge to design an extremely flexible and stretchable electrochromic device (ECD), due to the physical deformation and fracture of the conductive materials and supporting substrates after plenty of bending. To solve the aforementioned shortcoming of ECDs, in this paper, a self-supporting metal Ni gird electrode is mentioned, which discarded solid or flexible polymeric substrates, having outstanding features of extremely foldability (bending radius lower 50 µm), stretchability (stretching to 117.6%), excellent conductivity (sheet resistance lower 0.4 Ω/sq), high transmittance (about 90% in full spectra), and ultra-thin thickness (3.7 µm). By assembling the metal electrode, the electrochromic material and the hydrogel, a paper-thin, ultra-flexible, and stretchable ECD with an overall thickness of 113 µm was prepared, which could be attached to the manifold and undulating surface of things and be stretched without compromising the dynamic bleaching and coloration performance. The triple-layered and substrate-free ECD with excellent flexibility and wearability could serve as futuristic electronics used for multiple purposes, like flexible displays, camouflage wearables and medical monitoring, etc.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Molecular epidemiological studies have sought associations between interleukin-6 (IL-6) polymorphisms and the risk of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE); however, the results are controversial. Therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis with trial sequential analysis to evaluate a more accurate estimation of the associations. METHODS: Published literatures reporting the relationships of two IL-6 polymorphisms (G-174C and G-572C) and SLE risk were retrieved from electronic databases such as PubMed and EMBASE. The most appropriate genetic model was chosen for each polymorphism. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. Trial sequential analysis (TSA) was introduced to assess the information size and the positive results. RESULTS: With 17 studies (2780 cases and 3100 controls) included, a dominant association (CC+GC vs. GG) was suggested for G-174C polymorphism, and compared with the GG genotype, the CC+GC genotype of G-174C was associated with a decreased SLE risk (OR = 0.71; 95% CI = 0.56-0.88, P =.02). No association was found for G-572C under all genetic models (e.g. OR and 95%CI for CC+GC vs. GG: 0.89, 0.73-1.08, P =.22). Subgroup analyses indicated that SLE risk decreased in G-174C polymorphism by subgroups of Caucasian population, publications after 2010, studies with high quality, and studies complied with Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (HWE). TSA suggested that the sample sizes used for G-572C were insufficient. CONCLUSION: We found that the minor allele C of IL6G-174C polymorphism is a protective factor in SLE. Further studies with a larger sample size are needed to confirm the null association for G-572C.

RESUMEN

An efficient approach to obtain high shielding effectiveness (SE) in transparent shielding in an optical window field is proposed and demonstrated by fabricating an embedded double-layer metallic mesh (DLMM) comprised of randomly structured Ni meshes on both sides of a flexible substrate, employing a facile and low-cost double-sided nanoimprinting method. The unique nonperiodic random structure contributes to uniform diffraction and eliminates the Moiré fringe generated by double-layer periodic meshes, ensuring high imaging quality for optical applications. The designed DLMM films simultaneously achieve strong shielding in the X-band and high transmittance in the visible spectrum, demonstrating a high transmittance of 88.7% at the 550-nm wavelength and a SE of 46.9 dB at a frequency of 8.2 GHz. An ultra-high SE of 80 dB is achieved at 64.2% transmittance, which reveals the highest reported SE over a metallic mesh for transparent shielding, indicating the high potential for this transparent electromagnetic interference shielding material for practical optical applications.

RESUMEN

Findings for the roles of dairy products, Ca and vitamin D on ovarian cancer risk remain controversial. We aimed to assess these associations by using an updated meta-analysis. Five electronic databases (e.g. PubMed and Embase) were searched from inception to 24 December 2019. Pooled relative risks (RR) with 95 % CI were calculated. A total of twenty-nine case-control or cohort studies were included. For comparisons of the highest v. lowest intakes, higher whole milk intake was associated with increased ovarian cancer risk (RR 1·35; 95 % CI 1·15, 1·59), whereas decreased risks were observed for higher intakes of low-fat milk (RR 0·84; 95 % CI 0·73, 0·96), dietary Ca (RR 0·71; 95 % CI 0·60, 0·84) and dietary vitamin D (RR 0·80; 95 % CI 0·67, 0·95). Additionally, for every 100 g/d increment, increased ovarian cancer risks were found for total dairy products (RR 1·03; 95 % CI 1·01, 1·04) and for whole milk (RR 1·07; 95 % CI 1·03, 1·11); however, decreased risks were found for 100 g/d increased intakes of low-fat milk (RR 0·95; 95 % CI 0·91, 0·99), cheese (RR 0·87; 95 % CI 0·76, 0·98), dietary Ca (RR 0·96; 95 % CI 0·95, 0·98), total Ca (RR 0·98; 95 % CI 0·97, 0·99), dietary vitamin D (RR 0·92; 95 % CI 0·87, 0·97) and increased levels of circulating vitamin D (RR 0·84; 95 % CI 0·72, 0·97). These results show that whole milk intake might contribute to a higher ovarian cancer risk, whereas low-fat milk, dietary Ca and dietary vitamin D might reduce the risk.

RESUMEN

The atroposelective synthesis of axially chiral styrenes remains a formidable challenge due to their relatively lower rotational barriers compared to the biaryl atropoisomers. Herein, we describe the construction of axially chiral styrenes through PdII -catalyzed atroposelective C-H olefination, using a bulky amino amide as a transient chiral auxiliary. Various axially chiral styrenes were produced with good yields and high enantioselectivity (up to 95 % yield and 99 % ee). Carboxylic acid derivatives of the resulting axially chiral styrenes showed superior enantiocontrol over the biaryl counterparts in CoIII -catalyzed enantioselective C(sp3 )-H amidation of thioamide. Mechanistic studies suggest that C-H cleavage is the enantioselectivity-determining step.

RESUMEN

A unique freestanding nickel (Ni) metallic mesh-based electromagnetic interference shielding film has been fabricated though the direct-writing technique and a subsequent selective metal electrodeposited process. The structured freestanding Ni mesh film demonstrates a series of advantages, including ultrathin thickness (2.5-6.0 µm) and ultralight weight (0.23 mg cm-2), extraordinary optoelectronic performance (sheet resistance about 0.24-0.7 Ω sq-1 with transparency of 92%-93%), high figure of merit (18000) and outstanding flexibility as it can withstand folding, rolling and crumpling into various shapes while keeping the conductivity constant. Furthermore, by using this high-performance Ni mesh, an ultrathin, lightweight, freestanding and transparent electromagnetic interference shielding (EMI) film with extraordinary optoelectronic properties (shielding effectiveness about 40 dB with transparency of 92%) is demonstrated in X-band, with no performance attenuation observed even in bending state. This freestanding metallic mesh-structured electrode can be further explored or applied in various potential applications, such as conformal microwave antennas, transparent EMI windows, and wearable electronics.

RESUMEN

A compound-eye imaging system based on the phase diffractive microlens array as a compact observation module is proposed. As compared with the refractive microlens in common compound-eye imaging systems, the diffractive microlens is a flat imaging optics featuring high relative aperture, thin component thickness and compatibility with lithography techniques. As an application, a compact fingerprint imaging module was demonstrated using this compound-eye imaging system. The phase Fresnel microlens array with continuous trough morphology was fabricated via the self-developed gray-scale laser direct write equipment. An image reconstruction method is proposed by extracting the effective image information of each Fresnel microlens, removing the complex signal separator layer from the compound-eye imaging system. The illumination optics is further planarized through the waveguide backlighting and the waveguide functions as the touch panel for fingerprint recording. The novel compound-eye imaging device length was only restricted by the focal length of the microlens with a low limit of 4.12f. The applicability of this novel compound-eye imaging system was further demonstrated by recording the human fingerprint texture, paving ways for various applications as a compact imaging system.

RESUMEN

Flexible electronics, as a futuristic technology, is presenting tremendous impact in areas of wearable displaying, energy saving, and adaptive camouflage. In this work, we constructed a simple triple-layered electrochemical device with high flexibility using the electroplated nickel (Ni) grid electrode and the multifunctional hydrogel. The Ni grid electrode with low resistance (0.5 Ω/sq), high optical transparency (84.8%) and good mechanical flexibility, is beneficial for efficient electron injection, while the transparent lithium chloride hydrogel functions simultaneously for ion storage, ion transportation and counter-conducting. The thin polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT: PSS) film is utilized as the electrochromic (EC) material and it also distributes the electrons evenly for uniform coloration. The triple-layered EC architecture not only simplifies the manufacturing procedures but also improves the device performance in terms of optical contrast and mechanical robustness. The device shows fast response for coloration and bleaching with an absolute transmittance contrast of 40% and a contrast retention over 72% after 2500 bending cycles. The ability of the flexible electrochromic device for conformable attaching was also investigated without obvious performance degradation. The electroplated Ni grid electrode and the multifunctional hydrogel are advantageous in constructing flexible electrochromic devices in terms of the response time, the working stability and the bending capability, paving a way for next-generation flexible electronics.

RESUMEN

We propose and demonstrate the versatile fabrication of optical subwavelength microcavities by using imaging holography. As a demonstration, a peculiar square optical microcavity with a periodicity of 400 nm is imaged from a micrometer-scale diffractive optical element, attributing to the interference by the refocusing of the multiple diffractive beams. By spin-coating an active conjugated polymer onto the microcavity, highly directional laser emission with a low pumping threshold of 0.5 kW/cm2 is achieved. The effect of the film thickness on the lasing performance is also investigated. This imaging holography technique can enable convenient and easy fabrication of optical microcavities with subwavelength features, hence providing significant flexibility and richness on engineering the optical response of photonic nanostructures.

RESUMEN

We herein describe an oxidative [4 + 1] annulation used to prepare 1,2,4-triazolo[4,3-a]pyridines in the presence of I2-DMSO. This protocol enables synthesis of triazolo[4,3-a]pyridine-quinoline linked diheterocycles via a direct oxidative functionalization of sp3 C-H bonds of 2-methyl-azaheteroarenes. The reaction shows a wide substrate scope and good functional group tolerance.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The incidence and mortality rates of cancer have been increasing in developing countries, particularly in Asia. Therefore to provide optimal comprehensive care to the cancer patients, the care plan must focus on the comprehensive needs of cancer patients. The purpose of this study was to investigate the comprehensive needs of cancer patients, and explore the associated factors. METHODS: In a cross-sectional questionnaire study, a total of 200 cancer patient-caregiver dyads were selected and interviewed in Mainland China by convenient sampling method. Patients' comprehensive needs were assessed with Comprehensive Needs Assessment Tool in cancer for Patients (CNAT), including seven domains (Information, Psychological Problems, Health Care Staffs, Physical Symptoms, Hospital Facilities and Services, Social/Religious/Spiritual Support and Practical Support). Both cancer patients and caregivers completed the sociodemographic survey. The mean differences in domain scores for different characteristics groups were compared by one-way ANOVA or non-parametric analyses, and influencing factors defined with multivariate regression analysis. RESULTS: The cancer patients' need for Health Care Staffs (78.35 ± 13.08) was the highest among the seven domains, followed by the need for Information (71.18 ± 17.39) and the need for Hospital Facilities and Services (52.65 ± 13.35). The lowest score was the need for Physical Symptoms (35.12 ± 16.68). Patients who were female, with low family monthly income, at their own expense, and with highly educated caregivers had higher score of CNAT. Also sociodemographic characteristics were associated with each domain need of cancer patients. CONCLUSION: This study shows that cancer patients experience high levels of needs for health-care staff and information, and the different needs are closely related to their sociological characteristics. The provision of health care can be adapted to meet the different needs of cancer patients of different epidemiological characteristics at different times during the course of treatment.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Patients suffering from acute kidney injury (AKI) were associated with impaired sodium and potassium homeostasis. We aimed to investigate how admission serum sodium and potassium independently and jointly modified adverse clinical outcomes among AKI patients. METHODS: Patient data were extracted from the Multiparameter Intelligent Monitoring in Intensive Care Database III. Participants were categorized into three groups according to admission serum sodium and potassium, and the cut-off values were determined using smooth curve fitting. The primary outcome was 90-day mortality in the intensive care unit (ICU). Cox proportional hazards models were used to evaluate the prognostic effects of admission serum sodium and potassium levels. RESULTS: We included 13,621 ICU patients with AKI (mean age: 65.3 years; males: 55.4%). The middle category of admission serum sodium and potassium levels were 136.0-144.9 mmol/L and 3.7-4.7 mmol/L through fitting smooth curve. In multivariable Cox models, compared with the middle category, patients with hyponatremia or hypernatremia were associated with excess mortality and the HRs and its 95%CIs were 1.38 (1.27, 1.50) and 1.56 (1.36, 1.79), and patients with either hypokalemia or hyperkalemia were associated with excess mortality and the hazard ratios (HRs) and its 95% confidential intervals (95% CIs) were 1.12 (1.02, 1.24) and 1.25 (1.14, 1.36), respectively. Significant interactions were observed between admission serum sodium and potassium levels (P interaction = 0.001), with a higher serum potassium level associated with increased risk of 90-day mortality among patients with hyponatremia, whereas the effects of higher sodium level on prognostic effects of potassium were subtle. CONCLUSIONS: Admission serum sodium and potassium were associated with survival in a U-shaped pattern among patients with AKI, and hyperkalemia predict a worse clinical outcome among patients with hyponatremia.

RESUMEN

Conventional fabrication methods for realization of metal mesh (MM) based transparent conductive film (TCF) are not economic and environmentally friendly. By combination of the scrape and selective electroplating techniques, a vacuum sputtering/evaporation-free process is explored for fabrication of high-performance MM based TCF. The fabricated TCF exhibits ultra-low sheet electrical resistance (Rs = 0.07 Ω sq-1) at average transmittance of 83% in visible region. The sample cannot only exhibit high heating temperatures (140 °C) at low input voltage (1.5 V) with fast and stable thermal response but provide high electromagnetic interference shielding efficiency (EMI SE) more than 43 dB in X-band. The processing chain provides a robust, powerful and scalable platform, which may open up a new avenue for realizing multifunctional TCF in diverse applications.
