RESUMEN
The integer quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect is a lattice analogue of the quantum Hall effect at zero magnetic field1-3. This phenomenon occurs in systems with topologically non-trivial bands and spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking. Discovery of its fractional counterpart in the presence of strong electron correlations, that is, the fractional QAH effect4-7, would open a new chapter in condensed matter physics. Here we report the direct observation of both integer and fractional QAH effects in electrical measurements on twisted bilayer MoTe2. At zero magnetic field, near filling factor ν = -1 (one hole per moiré unit cell), we see an integer QAH plateau in the Hall resistance Rxy quantized to h/e2 ± 0.1%, whereas the longitudinal resistance Rxx vanishes. Remarkably, at ν = -2/3 and -3/5, we see plateau features in Rxy at [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], respectively, whereas Rxx remains small. All features shift linearly versus applied magnetic field with slopes matching the corresponding Chern numbers -1, -2/3 and -3/5, precisely as expected for integer and fractional QAH states. Additionally, at zero magnetic field, Rxy is approximately 2h/e2 near half-filling (ν = -1/2) and varies linearly as ν is tuned. This behaviour resembles that of the composite Fermi liquid in the half-filled lowest Landau level of a two-dimensional electron gas at high magnetic field8-14. Direct observation of the fractional QAH and associated effects enables research in charge fractionalization and anyonic statistics at zero magnetic field.

A hallmark of strongly correlated quantum materials is the rich phase diagram resulting from competing and intertwined phases with nearly degenerate ground-state energies1,2. A well-known example is the copper oxides, in which a charge density wave (CDW) is ordered well above and strongly coupled to the magnetic order to form spin-charge-separated stripes that compete with superconductivity1,2. Recently, such rich phase diagrams have also been shown in correlated topological materials. In 2D kagome lattice metals consisting of corner-sharing triangles, the geometry of the lattice can produce flat bands with localized electrons3,4, non-trivial topology5-7, chiral magnetic order8,9, superconductivity and CDW order10-15. Although CDW has been found in weakly electron-correlated non-magnetic AV3Sb5 (A = K, Rb, Cs)10-15, it has not yet been observed in correlated magnetic-ordered kagome lattice metals4,16-21. Here we report the discovery of CDW in the antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordered phase of kagome lattice FeGe (refs. 16-19). The CDW in FeGe occurs at wavevectors identical to that of AV3Sb5 (refs. 10-15), enhances the AFM ordered moment and induces an emergent anomalous Hall effect22,23. Our findings suggest that CDW in FeGe arises from the combination of electron-correlations-driven AFM order and van Hove singularities (vHSs)-driven instability possibly associated with a chiral flux phase24-28, in stark contrast to strongly correlated copper oxides1,2 and nickelates29-31, in which the CDW precedes or accompanies the magnetic order.

Adolescent cocaine exposure (ACE) induces anxiety and higher sensitivity to substances abuse during adulthood. Here, we show that the claustrum is crucial for controlling these psychiatric problems in male mice. In anxiety-like behavioral tests, the CaMKII-positive neurons in the median portion of the claustrum (MClaustrum) were triggered, and local suppression of these neurons reduced the anxiety-like behavior in ACE mice during adulthood. In contrast, the CaMKII-positive neurons in the anterior portion of the claustrum (AClaustrum) were more activated in response to subthreshold dose of cocaine induced conditioned place preference (CPP), and local suppression of these neurons blocked the acquisition of cocaine CPP in ACE mice during adulthood. Our findings for the first time identified the fine-regional role of the claustrum in regulating the anxiety and susceptibility to cocaine in ACE mice during adulthood, extending our understanding of the claustrum in substance use disorder.

Adolescent cocaine abuse increases the risk for developing addiction in later life, but the underlying molecular mechanism remains poorly understood. Here, we establish adolescent cocaine-exposed (ACE) male mouse models. A subthreshold dose of cocaine (sdC) treatment, insufficient to produce conditioned place preference (CPP) in adolescent mice, induces CPP in ACE mice during adulthood, along with more activated CaMKII-positive neurons, higher dual specificity protein kinase phosphatase-1 (Dusp1) mRNA, lower DUSP1 activity, and lower DUSP1 expression in CaMKII-positive neurons in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). Overexpressing DUSP1 in CaMKII-positive neurons suppresses neuron activity and blocks sdC-induced CPP in ACE mice during adulthood. On the contrary, depleting DUSP1 in CaMKII-positive neurons activates more neurons and further enhances sdC-induced behavior in ACE mice during adulthood. Also, ERK1/2 might be a downstream signal of DUSP1 in the process. Our findings reveal a role of mPFC DUSP1 in ACE-induced higher sensitivity to the drug in adult mice. DUSP1 might be a potential pharmacological target to predict or treat the susceptibility to addictive drugs caused by adolescent substance use.

BACKGROUND: The presence of heterogeneity is a significant attribute within the context of ovarian cancer. This study aimed to assess the predictive accuracy of models utilizing quantitative 18F-FDG PET/CT derived inter-tumor heterogeneity metrics in determining progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) in patients diagnosed with high-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC). Additionally, the study investigated the potential correlation between model risk scores and the expression levels of p53 and Ki-67. METHODS: A total of 292 patients diagnosed with HGSOC were retrospectively enrolled at Shengjing Hospital of China Medical University (median age: 54 ± 9.4 years). Quantitative inter-tumor heterogeneity metrics were calculated based on conventional measurements and texture features of primary and metastatic lesions in 18F-FDG PET/CT. Conventional models, heterogeneity models, and integrated models were then constructed to predict PFS and OS. Spearman's correlation coefficient (ρ) was used to evaluate the correlation between immunohistochemical scores of p53 and Ki-67 and model risk scores. RESULTS: The C-indices of the integrated models were the highest for both PFS and OS models. The C-indices of the training set and testing set of the integrated PFS model were 0.898 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.881-0.914) and 0.891 (95% CI: 0.860-0.921), respectively. For the integrated OS model, the C-indices of the training set and testing set were 0.894 (95% CI: 0.871-0.917) and 0.905 (95% CI: 0.873-0.936), respectively. The integrated PFS model showed the strongest correlation with the expression levels of p53 (ρ = 0.859, p < 0.001) and Ki-67 (ρ = 0.829, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The models based on 18F-FDG PET/CT quantitative inter-tumor heterogeneity metrics exhibited good performance for predicting the PFS and OS of patients with HGSOC. p53 and Ki-67 expression levels were strongly correlated with the risk scores of the integrated predictive models.

BACKGROUND: Excess aldosterone is implicated in vascular calcification (VC), but the mechanism by which aldosterone-MR (mineralocorticoid receptor) complex promotes VC is unclear. Emerging evidence indicates that long-noncoding RNA H19 (H19) plays a critical role in VC. We examined whether aldosterone-induced osteogenic differentiation of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) through H19 epigenetic modification of Runx2 (runt-related transcription factor-2) in a MR-dependent manner. METHODS: We induced in vivo rat model of chronic kidney disease using a high adenine and phosphate diet to explore the relationship among aldosterone, MR, H19, and VC. We also cultured human aortic VSMCs to explore the roles of H19 in aldosterone-MR complex-induced osteogenic differentiation and calcification of VSMCs. RESULTS: H19 and Runx2 were significantly increased in aldosterone-induced VSMC osteogenic differentiation and VC, both in vitro and in vivo, which were significantly blocked by the MR antagonist spironolactone. Mechanistically, our findings reveal that the aldosterone-activated MR bound to H19 promoter and increased its transcriptional activity, as determined by chromatin immunoprecipitation, electrophoretic mobility shift assay, and luciferase reporter assay. Silencing H19 increased microRNA-106a-5p (miR-106a-5p) expression, which subsequently inhibited aldosterone-induced Runx2 expression at the posttranscriptional level. Importantly, we observed a direct interaction between H19 and miR-106a-5p, and downregulation of miR-106a-5p efficiently reversed the suppression of Runx2 induced by H19 silencing. CONCLUSIONS: Our study clarifies a novel mechanism by which upregulation of H19 contributes to aldosterone-MR complex-promoted Runx2-dependent VSMC osteogenic differentiation and VC through sponging miR-106a-5p. These findings highlight a potential therapeutic target for aldosterone-induced VC.

The brown planthopper (BPH), Nilaparvata lugens (Stål), is a notorious pest affecting Asian rice crops. The evolution of insecticide resistance in BPH has emerged as a significant challenge in effectively managing this pest. This study revealed the resistance status of BPH to nine insecticides in ten provinces and Shanghai City in China from 2020 to 2023. Monitoring results showed that the resistance of BPH to triflumezopyrim, nitenpyram, and dinotefuran increased rapidly. The average resistance ratio of BPH to triflumezopyrim increased from 2.5 to 7.1 fold, nitenpyram from 18.3 to 37.7 fold, and dinotefuran from 119.5 to 268.1 fold. All populations remained extremely high resistance to imidacloprid, thiamethoxam, and buprofezin. Most field populations of BPH maintained moderate resistance to chlorpyrifos and sulfoxaflor, and high resistance to pymetrozine by rice stem dipping method. However, considering the reproduction-inhibiting character of pymetrozine, susceptible to low resistance levels to pymetrozine were monitored by Insecticide Resistance Action Committee (IRAC) NO.005 method. This result indicated that pymetrozine might lose efficacy in the control of application generation, but it could significantly inhibit the reproduction of field populations of BPH. Additionally, we compared the expression levels of 11 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) genes, the targets of nAChR competitive modulators, in four field populations (FY23, YH23, LJ23, LP23) and susceptible strain. The expression level of nAChR α4 was significantly reduced in all field populations, while α1, α2, α6, and α7 were significantly reduced in some field populations. Our findings provide valuable information for resistance management strategies in N. lugens and offer new insights into the resistance mechanisms of nAChR competitive modulators.

The purpose of the meta-analysis was to evaluate and compare the photodynamic therapy's effectiveness in treating infected skin wounds. The results of this meta-analysis were analysed, and the odds ratio (OR) and mean difference (MD) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using dichotomous or contentious random- or fixed-effect models. For the current meta-analysis, 6 examinations spanning from 2013 to 2021 were included, encompassing 154 patients with infected skin wounds were the used studies' starting point. Photodynamic therapy had a significantly lower wound ulcer size (MD, -4.42; 95% CI, -7.56--1.28, p = 0.006), better tissue repair (MD, -8.62; 95% CI, -16.76--0.48, p = 0.04) and lower microbial cell viability (OR, 0.13; 95% CI, 0.04-0.42, p < 0.001) compared with red light exposure in subjects with infected skin wounds. The examined data revealed that photodynamic therapy had a significantly lower wound ulcer size, better tissue repair and lower microbial cell viability compared with red light exposure in subjects with infected skin wounds. However, given that all examinations had a small sample size, consideration should be given to their values.

BACKGROUND: Klebsiella pneumoniae liver abscess (KPLA) with extrahepatic migratory infections is defined as invasive KPLA (IKPLA). The type VI secretion system (T6SS) is involved in the pathogenesis of KPLA. We hypothesized that T6SS plays a role in IKPLA. METHODS: 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing was performed on abscess samples. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and reverse-transcription PCR (RT-PCR) was used to validate the expression difference of T6SS hallmark genes. In vitro and in vivo experiments were performed to identify the pathogenic feature of T6SS. RESULTS: PICRUSt2 predicted that the T6SS-related genes were notably enriched in the IKPLA group. PCR detection of T6SS hallmark genes (hcp, vgrG, and icmF) showed that 197 (81.1%) were T6SS-positive strains. The T6SS-positive strain detection rate in the IKPLA group was higher than in the KPLA group (97.1% vs 78.4%; P < .05). RT-PCR showed that the hcp expression level was markedly increased in IKPLA isolates (P < .05). The T6SS-positive isolates showed higher survival against serum and neutrophil killing (all P < .05). The T6SS-positive K pneumoniae-infected mice had a shorter survival time, higher mortality, and an increased interleukin 6 expression in the liver and lungs (all P < .05). CONCLUSIONS: T6SS is an essential virulence factor for K pneumoniae and contributes to IKPLA.

Gene annotation is essential for genome-based studies. However, algorithm-based genome annotation is difficult to fully and correctly reveal genomic information, especially for species with complex genomes. Artemisia annua L. is the only commercial resource of artemisinin production though the content of artemisinin is still to be improved. Genome-based genetic modification and breeding are useful strategies to boost artemisinin content and therefore, ensure the supply of artemisinin and reduce costs, but better gene annotation is urgently needed. In this study, we manually corrected the newly released genome annotation of A. annua using second- and third-generation transcriptome data. We found that incorrect gene information may lead to differences in structural, functional, and expression levels compared to the original expectations. We also identified alternative splicing events and found that genome annotation information impacted identifying alternative splicing genes. We further demonstrated that genome annotation information and alternative splicing could affect gene expression estimation and gene function prediction. Finally, we provided a valuable version of A. annua genome annotation and demonstrated the importance of gene annotation in future research.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Liver diseases present a wide range of fibrosis, from fatty liver with no inflammation to steatohepatitis with varying degrees of fibrosis, to established cirrhosis leading to HCC. In a multivariate analysis, serum levels of spermidine were chosen as the top metabolite from 237 metabolites and its levels were drastically reduced along with progression to advanced steatohepatitis. Our previous studies that showed spermidine supplementation helps mice prevent liver fibrosis through MAP1S have prompted us to explore the possibility that spermidine can alleviate or cure already developed liver fibrosis. METHODS: We collected tissue samples from patients with liver fibrosis to measure the levels of MAP1S. We treated wild-type and MAP1S knockout mice with CCl4 -induced liver fibrosis with spermidine and isolated HSCs in culture to test the effects of spermidine on HSC activation and liver fibrosis. RESULTS: Patients with increasing degrees of liver fibrosis had reduced levels of MAP1S. Supplementing spermidine in mice that had already developed liver fibrosis after 1 month of CCl4 induction for an additional 3 months resulted in significant reductions in levels of ECM proteins and a remarkable improvement in liver fibrosis through MAP1S. Spermidine also suppressed HSC activation by reducing ECM proteins at both the mRNA and protein levels, and increasing the number of lipid droplets in stellate cells. CONCLUSIONS: Spermidine supplementation is a potentially clinically meaningful approach to treating and curing liver fibrosis, preventing cirrhosis and HCC in patients.

BACKGROUND: To investigate whether obesity with or without metabolic syndrome is prospectively associated with coronary artery calcium (CAC) progression and incident cardiovascular disease events. METHODS: A total of 1730 participants from the CARDIA study (Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults) were included (age, 40.1±3.6 years; 38.3% men), who completed computed tomography of CAC at baseline (year 15: 2000-2001) and follow-up (year 20 or 25). Metabolically healthy obesity (MHO) was defined as body mass index≥30 kg/m2 without any metabolic syndrome components in our main analysis. Sensitivity analyses were conducted for several conditions characterizing 4 metabolic phenotypes. RESULTS: During a mean follow-up of 9.1 years, 439 participants had CAC progression. MHO subjects had a significantly higher risk of CAC progression than their metabolically healthy normal weight counterparts (adjusted hazard ratios [95% CIs] from 1.761 [1.369-2.264] to 2.047 [1.380-3.036]) depending on the definition of MHO adopted. Obesity with unhealthy metabolic profile remained the highest significant risk of CAC progression and cardiovascular disease events whatever the definitions adopted for metabolically unhealthy status. Up to 60% of participants with MHO converted to metabolically unhealthy obesity from year 15 to year 20 or year 25. Further sensitivity analysis showed that MHO throughout carried a similar risk of incident cardiovascular disease events compared with metabolically healthy normal weight throughout. CONCLUSIONS: Different metabolic phenotypes of obesity beginning at a young age exhibit distinct risks of CAC progression and subsequent cardiovascular disease events in later midlife. MHO represents an intermediate phenotype between metabolically low- to high-risk obese individuals. REGISTRATION: URL: https://www. CLINICALTRIALS: gov; Unique identifier: NCT00005130.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a dangerous vascular disease without any effective drug therapies so far. Emerging evidence suggests the phenotypic differences in perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT) between regions of the aorta are implicated in the development of atherosclerosis evidenced by the abdominal aorta more vulnerable to atherosclerosis than the thoracic aorta in large animals and humans. The prevalence of thoracic aortic aneurysms (TAA) is much less than that of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA). In this study we investigated the effect of thoracic PVAT (T-PVAT) transplantation on aortic aneurysm formation and the impact of T-PVAT on vascular smooth muscle cells. Calcium phosphate-induced mouse AAA model was established. T-PVAT (20 mg) was implanted around the abdominal aorta of recipient mice after removal of endogenous abdominal PVAT (A-PVAT) and calcium phosphate treatment. Mice were sacrificed two weeks after the surgery and the maximum external diameter of infrarenal aorta was measured. We found that T-PVAT displayed a more BAT-like phenotype than A-PVAT; transplantation of T-PVAT significantly attenuated calcium phosphate-induced abdominal aortic dilation and elastic degradation as compared to sham control or A-PVAT transplantation. In addition, T-PVAT transplantation largely preserved smooth muscle cell content in the abdominal aortic wall. Co-culture of T-PVAT with vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) significantly inhibited H2O2- or TNFα plus cycloheximide-induced VSMC apoptosis. RNA sequencing analysis showed that T-PVAT was enriched by browning adipocytes and anti-apoptotic secretory proteins. We further verified that the secretome of mature adipocytes isolated from T-PVAT significantly inhibited H2O2- or TNFα plus cycloheximide-induced VSMC apoptosis. Using proteomic and bioinformatic analyses we identified cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP) as a secreted protein significantly increased in T-PVAT. Recombinant COMP protein significantly inhibited VSMC apoptosis. We conclude that T-PVAT exerts anti-apoptosis effect on VSMCs and attenuates AAA formation, which is possibly attributed to the secretome of browning adipocytes.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study is to evaluate the application of high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) and turbo spin-echo diffusion-weighted imaging (TSE-DWI) fusion imaging for localization of middle ear cholesteatomas. METHODS: Eighty-six patients with clinically suspected middle ear cholesteatomas were enrolled prospectively. Ear TSE-DWI and HRCT scans were performed using a postprocessing workstation to generate a TSE-DWI-CT fusion image. Subsequently, all the enrolled patients received surgical treatment. According to the STAM system (difficult access sites [S], the tympanic cavity [T], the attic [A], and the mastoid [M]), the agreement between the localization of lesions evaluated by HRCT, TSE-DWI, and TSE-DWI-CT fusion images and the intraoperatively recorded localization were computed using Cohen κ statistic. RESULTS: Based on the pathological results, the enrolled patients were divided into a cholesteatoma (n = 50) and a noncholesteatoma group (n = 36). The area under the receiver operator characteristic curve for diagnosis of cholesteatoma with TSE-DWI-CT fusion imaging was identical to that using the TSE-DWI images (0.924 vs 0.924, P > 0.05), but was significantly higher than that with HRCT imaging (0.924 vs 0.767, P = 0.0005). Furthermore, the diagnostic sensitivity and specificity of TSE-DWI-CT fusion imaging for cholesteatomas were 96.0% and 88.9%, respectively. Depending on whether the cholesteatoma extended to the mastoid, TSE-DWI-CT fusion imaging demonstrated good agreement with the intraoperative record for localization of lesions (κ = 0.808) and had a high accuracy of localization by the STAM system. CONCLUSIONS: Turbo spin-echo-DWI-CT fusion images have a very high diagnostic value for the preoperative localization of cholesteatomas.

PURPOSE: Acute cholecystitis occurring outside the hospital setting is categorized as community-acquired cholecystitis (CAC). In contrast, it would be classified as a healthcare-associated cholecystitis (HAC) when it is associated with healthcare risk factors. This study aimed to compare the clinical characteristics of HAC to those of CAC and analyze their difference in prognosis after percutaneous cholecystostomy (PC). METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted for patients with acute cholecystitis who underwent PC between January 1, 2017, and June 30, 2020, in our hospital. Patients with HAC and CAC were compared in terms of demographics, laboratory tests, isolated pathogens, treatment response after PC, mortality, complications, and subsequent management. RESULTS: A total of 247 patients with a mean age of 68 years were enrolled, among whom 131 patients (53.0%) were male. Twenty patients (8.1%) had HAC, and 227 patients (91.9%) had CAC. Patients with HAC were more likely to present with the following: fever (65.0% vs 35.7%; p = 0.010), acalculous cholecystitis (50.0% vs 20.3%; p = 0.002), and a history of malignancy (50.0% vs 15.4%; p < 0.001), poorer clinical responses to PC treatment (75.0% vs 93.0%; p = 0.006), longer length of stay (14.15 days vs 7.62 days; p < 0.001), and higher all-cause mortality (30.0% vs 9.7%; p = 0.006). In addition, a relatively small number of patients with HAC underwent cholecystectomy in subsequent management (35.0% vs 69.2%; p = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, compared to patients with CAC, those with HAC had more atypical symptoms, poorer clinical response to PC, longer hospital stay, and higher all-cause mortality, which makes the acceptability of PC treatment questionable.

Insecticides have been widely used for the control of insect pests that have a significant impact on agriculture and human health. A better understanding of insecticide targets is needed for effective insecticide design and resistance management. Pymetrozine, afidopyropen and flonicamid are reported to target on proteins that located on insect chordotonal organs, resulting in the disruption of insect coordination and the inhibition of feeding. In this study, we systematically examined the susceptibility of six Drosophila melanogaster mutants (five transient receptor potential channels and one mechanoreceptor) to three commercially used insecticides, in order to identify the receptor subunits critical to the insect's response to insecticides. Our results showed that iav1, nan36aand wtrw1 mutants exhibited significantly reduced susceptibility to pymetrozine and afidopyropen, but not to flonicamid. The number of eggs produced by the three mutant females were significantly less than that of the w1118 strain. Meanwhile, the longevity of all male mutants and females of nan36a and wtrw1 mutants was significantly shorter than that of the w1118 strain as the control. However, we observed no gravitaxis defects in wtrw1 mutants and the anti-gravitaxis of wtrw1 mutants was abolished by pymetrozine. Behavioral assays using thermogenetic tools further confirmed the bioassay results and supported the idea that Nan as a TRPV subfamily member located in Drosophila chordotonal neurons, acting as a target of pymetrozine, which interferes with Drosophila and causes motor deficits with gravitaxis defects. Taken together, this study elucidates the interactions of pymetrozine and afidopyropen with TRPV channels, Nan and Iav, and TRPA channel, Wtrw. Our research provides another evidence that pymetrozine and afidopyropen might target on nan, iav and wtrw channels and provides insights into the development of sustainable pest management strategies.

Temperature and humidity play an important role in plant-pathogen interactions. However, regulating the temperature and humidity specifically to inhibit the development of plant diseases remains unclear. In this study, we explored the influence of intermittent temperature and humidity variation on tomato gray mold. Intermittent regulation of temperature and humidity (increasing temperature with decreasing humidity for different periods within 24 h) inhibited the disease severity of plants and the infection process of Botrytis cinerea. The 4-h treatment (increasing temperature accompanied by decreasing humidity for 4 h and recovering for 4 h, and so on) effectively inhibited the development of tomato gray mold, reduced the biomass of B. cinerea, delayed the differentiation time of mycelia, and inhibited the accumulation of hydrogen peroxide in tomato leaves at the later stage of infection. The increased expressions of heat-shock protein (HSP) genes HSP20, HSP70, HSP90, BAG6, and BAG7 in tomato were mainly caused by environmental changes and environment-plant-pathogen interactions, and the increased expression of the latter was greater than that of the former in the 2-h (increasing temperature accompanied by decreasing humidity for 2 h and recovering for 2 h, and so on) and 4-h treatments. Pathogen infection induced the expression of defense-related genes in tomato, and the increase in the expressions of FLS2, FEI1, PI2, Pti5, and WRKY75 induced by B. cinerea in the 4-h treatment was greater than that under unregulated temperature and humidity conditions. In general, intermittent temperature and humidity variation can effectively inhibit the development of tomato gray mold, and the 4-h treatment had the best inhibitory effect.

Dissipationless currents from topologically protected states are promising for disorder-tolerant electronics and quantum computation. Here, we photogenerate giant anisotropic terahertz nonlinear currents with vanishing scattering, driven by laser-induced coherent phonons of broken inversion symmetry in a centrosymmetric Dirac material ZrTe5. Our work suggests that this phononic terahertz symmetry switching leads to formation of Weyl points, whose chirality manifests in a transverse, helicity-dependent current, orthogonal to the dynamical inversion symmetry breaking axis, via circular photogalvanic effect. The temperature-dependent topological photocurrent exhibits several distinct features: Berry curvature dominance, particle-hole reversal near conical points and chirality protection that is responsible for an exceptional ballistic transport length of ~10 µm. These results, together with first-principles modelling, indicate two pairs of Weyl points dynamically created by B1u phonons of broken inversion symmetry. Such phononic terahertz control breaks ground for coherent manipulation of Weyl nodes and robust quantum transport without application of static electric or magnetic fields.

Symmetric anisotropic interaction can be ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic at the same time but for different crystallographic axes. We show that the competition of anisotropic interactions of orthogonal irreducible representations can be a general route to obtain new exotic magnetic states. We demonstrate it here by observing the emergence of a continuously tunable 12-layer spatial spin modulation when distorting the square-lattice planes in the quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnetic Sr_{2}IrO_{4} under in situ shear strain. This translation-symmetry-breaking phase is a result of an unusual strain-activated anisotropic interaction which is at the fourth order and competing with the inherent quadratic anisotropic interaction. Such a mechanism of competing anisotropy is distinct from that among the ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic, and/or the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, and it could be widely applicable and highly controllable in low-dimensional magnets.

OBJECTIVES: Klebsiella pneumoniae liver abscess (KPLA) complicated with extrahepatic migratory infection (EMI) is defined as invasive KPLA. The current study aimed to develop and validate a risk prediction model for the invasiveness of KPLA. METHODS: From 2010 to 2020, KPLA patients from four institutes were selected retrospectively. In the development cohort, risk factors from a logistic regression analysis were utilized to develop the prediction model. External validation was performed using an independent cohort. RESULTS: A total of 382 KPLA patients comprised two separate cohorts: development cohort (institute 1, n = 286) and validation cohort (institute 2-4, n = 86). The overall incidence of EMI was 19.1% (development cohort, n = 55; validation cohort, n = 18, p > 0.05). In the development cohort, four risk factors (age ≤ 40 years, fasting blood glucose (FBG) > 7 mmol/L, no rim enhancement, and thrombophlebitis on CT), significantly associated with EMI, were incorporated into the scoring system. The area under curve (AUC) of the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) in the development and validation cohorts was 0.931 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.93-0.95) and 0.831 (95% CI: 0.86-0.91), respectively. The calibration curves fitted well. The incidence of EMI was 3.3% and 56.5% for the low- (total scores ≤ 4) and high-risk (total scores > 4) groups in the development cohort, and 3.2% and 66.7% in the validation cohort (all p < 0.001), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Age ≤ 40 years, FBG > 7 mmol/L, no rim enhancement, and thrombophlebitis were independent risk factors for EMI. This validated prediction model may aid clinicians in identifying KPLA patients at increased risk for invasiveness. KEY POINTS: ⢠Four risk factors are significantly associated with extrahepatic migratory infections (EMI): age ≤ 40 years, fasting blood glucose (FBG) > 7 mmol/L, no rim enhancement, and thrombophlebitis on CT. ⢠Based on these risk factors, the current study developed and validated a prediction model for the invasiveness of Klebsiella pneumoniae liver abscess (KPLA). ⢠This validated prediction model may in the help early identification of KPLA patients at increased risk for invasiveness.
