The transcription factor BTB and CNC homology 1(BACH1) has been linked to coronary artery disease risk by human genome-wide association studies, but little is known about the role of BACH1 in vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) phenotype switching and neointima formation following vascular injury. Therefore, this study aims to explore the role of BACH1 in vascular remodeling and its underlying mechanisms. BACH1 was highly expressed in human atherosclerotic plaques and has high transcriptional factor activity in VSMCs of human atherosclerotic arteries. VSMC-specific loss of Bach1 in mice inhibited the transformation of VSMC from contractile to synthetic phenotype and VSMC proliferation and attenuated the neointimal hyperplasia induced by wire injury. Mechanistically, BACH1 suppressed chromatin accessibility at the promoters of VSMC marker genes via recruiting histone methyltransferase G9a and cofactor YAP and maintaining the H3K9me2 state, thereby repressing VSMC marker genes expression in human aortic smooth muscle cells (HASMCs). BACH1-induced repression of VSMC marker genes was abolished by the silencing of G9a or YAP. Thus, these findings demonstrate a crucial regulatory role of BACH1 in VSMC phenotypic transition and vascular homeostasis and shed light on potential future protective vascular disease intervention via manipulation of BACH1.

BACKGROUND: The transcription factor BACH1 (BTB and CNC homology 1) suppressed endothelial cells (ECs) proliferation and migration and impaired angiogenesis in the ischemic hindlimbs of adult mice. However, the role and underlying mechanisms of BACH1 in atherosclerosis remain unclear. METHODS: Mouse models of atherosclerosis in endothelial cell (EC)-specific-Bach1 knockout mice were used to study the role of BACH1 in the regulation of atherogenesis and the underlying mechanisms. RESULTS: Genetic analyses revealed that coronary artery disease-associated risk variant rs2832227 was associated with BACH1 gene expression in carotid plaques from patients. BACH1 was upregulated in ECs of human and mouse atherosclerotic plaques. Endothelial Bach1 deficiency decreased turbulent blood flow- or western diet-induced atherosclerotic lesions, macrophage content in plaques, expression of endothelial adhesion molecules (ICAM1 [intercellular cell adhesion molecule-1] and VCAM1 [vascular cell adhesion molecule-1]), and reduced plasma TNF-α (tumor necrosis factor-α) and IL-1ß levels in atherosclerotic mice. BACH1 deletion or knockdown inhibited monocyte-endothelial adhesion and reduced oscillatory shear stress or TNF-α-mediated induction of endothelial adhesion molecules and/or proinflammatory cytokines in mouse ECs, human umbilical vein ECs, and human aortic ECs. Mechanistic studies showed that upon oscillatory shear stress or TNF-α stimulation, BACH1 and YAP (yes-associated protein) were induced and translocated into the nucleus in ECs. BACH1 upregulated YAP expression by binding to the YAP promoter. BACH1 formed a complex with YAP inducing the transcription of adhesion molecules. YAP overexpression in ECs counteracted the antiatherosclerotic effect mediated by Bach1-deletion in mice. Rosuvastatin inhibited BACH1 expression by upregulating microRNA let-7a in ECs, and decreased Bach1 expression in the vascular endothelium of hyperlipidemic mice. BACH1 was colocalized with YAP, and the expression of BACH1 was positively correlated with YAP and proinflammatory genes, as well as adhesion molecules in human atherosclerotic plaques. CONCLUSIONS: These data identify BACH1 as a mechanosensor of hemodynamic stress and reveal that the BACH1-YAP transcriptional network is essential to vascular inflammation and atherogenesis. BACH1 shows potential as a novel therapeutic target in atherosclerosis.

Low-dimensional crystalline materials have attracted much attention due to their special physical and chemical properties. Herein, two new oxalate chlorides, C(NH2)3Cd(C2O4)Cl(H2O)·H2O and BaCd(C2O4)1.5Cl(H2O)2, were synthesized. C(NH2)3Cd(C2O4)Cl(H2O)·H2O presents the unique {[Cd(C2O4)Cl(H2O)]-}∞ zigzag chain, while BaCd(C2O4)1.5Cl(H2O)2 shows a novel {[Cd(C2O4)1.5Cl]2-}∞ layer. They showed large measured band gaps, which were 3.76 and 4.53 eV, respectively, and the latter was the largest band gap in the A-M-C2O4-X (A = Monovalent cationic or alkaline earth metals, X = F, Cl, Br, I) family. They exhibit a large calculated birefringence of 0.075 and 0.096 at 1064 nm, respectively. This study promotes the exploration of synthesizing low-dimensional crystalline materials with balanced overall optical performances by a chemical scissors strategy.

People often express feeling that time passes quickly or slowly in their daily lives, which is termed passage of time judgment (PoTJ). Past studies have shown that PoTJ is affected by emotional valence and arousal; however, few studies have verified the effects of alertness, attention to time, and time expectation on PoTJ and whether the effects are stable over different time periods. Using the experience sampling method (ESM) and diary method, the present study collected data from 105 participants and examined for the first time whether alertness, attention to time, and time expectation affect PoTJ based on daily life data, as well as whether above factors, emotional valence, and arousal are stable over different time periods. All participants answered a questionnaire five times a day on their in-the-day PoTJ and related factors regarding the last 30 min, and answered the same questionnaire once a day at 23:00 regarding the of-the-day PoTJ. The results showed that alertness and time expectation, as well as emotional valence and arousal, predicted an individual's in-the-day PoTJ over a shorter period (i.e., the last 30 min); in contrast, only time expectation and emotional arousal predicted of-the-day PoTJ over a longer period (i.e., the past day). These results suggest that, alertness and time expectation are important factors influencing PoTJ, in addition to emotional state. Of-the-day PoTJ correlates most strongly with the mean and latest in-the-day PoTJ, implying that overall perception of time passage is influenced by both cumulative temporal experience and recent temporal experience.

Edible insects have been recognised as an alternative food or feed ingredient due to their protein value for both humans and domestic animals. The objective of this study was to evaluate the ability of both near- (NIR) and mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopy to identify and quantify the level of adulteration of cricket powder added into two plant proteins: chickpea and flaxseed meal flour. Cricket flour (CKF) was added to either commercial chickpea (CPF) or flaxseed meal flour (FxMF) at different ratios of 95:5% w/w, 90:10% w/w, 85:15% w/w, 80:20% w/w, 75:25% w/w, 70:30% w/w, 65:35% w/w, 60:40% w/w, or 50:50% w/w. The mixture samples were analysed using an attenuated total reflectance (ATR) MIR instrument and a Fourier transform (FT) NIR instrument. The partial least squares (PLS) cross-validation statistics based on the MIR spectra showed that the coefficient of determination (R2CV) and the standard error in cross-validation (SECV) were 0.94 and 6.68%, 0.91 and 8.04%, and 0.92 and 4.33% for the ALL, CPF vs. CKF, and FxMF vs. CKF mixtures, respectively. The results based on NIR showed that the cross-validation statistics R2CV and SECV were 0.95 and 3.16%, 0.98 and 1.74%, and 0.94 and 3.27% using all the samples analyzed together (ALL), the CPF vs. CKF mixture, and the FxMF vs. CKF mixture, respectively. The results of this study showed the effect of the matrix (type of flour) on the PLS-DA data in both the classification results and the PLS loadings used by the models. The different combination of flours (mixtures) showed differences in the absorbance values at specific wavenumbers in the NIR range that can be used to classify the presence of CKF. Research in this field is valuable in advancing the application of vibrational spectroscopy as routine tools in food analysis and quality control.

As one of the most abundant groups in marine fish families, Gobiidae fish are important fishery resources in China, and some are also invasive species in certain regions worldwide. However, the phylogenetic relationships of Gobiidae fish remain ambiguous, and the study of their invasion-related genes is still scarce. This study used high-throughput sequencing technology to conduct a whole-genome survey of five Gobiidae fish species: Acanthogobius flavimanus, Acanthogobius stigmothonus, Favonigobius gymnauchen, Ctenotrypauchen microcephalus, and Tridentiger barbatus. De novo assembly of five fish genomes was performed, and genomic traits were compared through K-mer analysis. Among the five Gobiidae fish genomes, F. gymnauchen had the largest genome size (1601.98 Mb) and the highest heterozygosity (1.56%) and repeat rates (59.83%). Phylogenetic studies showed that A. flavimanus was most closely linked to A. stigmothonus, while Apogonidae and Gobiidae were closely related families. PSMC analysis revealed that C. microcephalus experienced a notable population expansion than the other four fish species in the Early Holocene. By using the KOG, GO, and KEGG databases to annotate single-copy genes, the annotated genes of the five fish were mainly classified as "signal transduction mechanisms", "cellular process", "cellular anatomical entity", and "translation". Acanthogobius flavimanus, A. stigmothonus, and T. barbatus had more genes classified as "response to stimulus" and "localization", which may have played an important role in their invasive processes. Our study also provides valuable material about Gobiidae fish genomics and genetic evolution.

The typical lake wetlands in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River are important wintering sites of cranes in China. The spatiotemporal evolution of crane populations and their habitats has great value in clarifying the pivotal role of regional lake wetlands in biodiversity conservation. Therefore, 2562 data points of four crane species were selected in this study. The data reflected the distributional position of the cranes over the period 2000-2020. Twelve surrounding environmental factors were selected to investigate the spatiotemporal evolution in the study area by using the MaxEnt model. The Jackknife method was used to identify the main environmental factors affecting the choice of crane habitats. The results indicated that: (1) Developed land in the study area increased by 42,795.81 hm2. The crane populations were mainly distributed in the farmland and mudflat, and their number decreased yearly. (2) From 2000 to 2020, the area of suitable crane habitat experienced an overall decrease. Specifically, the mid-suitable area dwindled by 6234.23 hm2, marking a substantial reduction of 52.05 %. Similarly, the most suitable area saw a decline of 786.41 hm2, representing a noteworthy decrease of 71.09 %. (3) The findings from the analysis of influencing factors revealed a dynamic pattern over the years. Habitat type, water density, and distance to water were the main influencing factors in the study area from 2000 to 2020. This study provides a new perspective on the conservation and structural habitat restoration of crane populations in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River.

The renewable electricity-driven hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) coupled with biomass oxidation is a powerful avenue to maximize the energy efficiency and economic feedback, but challenging. Herein, porous Ni-VN heterojunction nanosheets on nickel foam (Ni-VN/NF) are constructed as a robust electrocatalyst to simultaneously catalyze HER and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural electrooxidation reaction (HMF EOR). Benefiting from the surface reconstruction of Ni-VN heterojunction during the oxidation process, the derived NiOOH-VN/NF energetically catalyzes HMF into 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), yielding the high HMF conversion (>99%), FDCA yield (99%), and Faradaic efficiency (>98%) at the lower oxidation potential along with the superior cycling stability. Ni-VN/NF is also surperactive for HER, exhibiting an onset potential of ≈0 mV and Tafel slope of 45 mV dec-1 . The integrated Ni-VN/NF||Ni-VN/NF configuration delivers a compelling cell voltage of 1.426 V at 10 mA cm-2 for the H2 O-HMF paired electrolysis, about 100 mV lower than that for water splitting. Theoretically, for Ni-VN/NF, the superiority in HMF EOR and HER is mainly dominated by the local electronic distribution at the heterogenous interface, which accelerates the charge transfer and optimize the adsorption of reactants/intermediates by modulating the d-band center, therefore being an advisable thermodynamic and kinetic process.

BACKGROUND: Neurodevelopmental abnormalities are prevalent in children with tetralogy of Fallot. Our aim was to investigate the structural brain alterations of preschool-aged children with tetralogy of Fallot and its correlation with neurodevelopmental outcome. METHODS: T1-weighted structural images were obtained from 25 children with tetralogy of Fallot who had undergone cardiopulmonary bypass surgery and from 24 normal controls. Cortical morphological indices including gray matter volume, cortical thickness, sulcal depth, gyrification, and cortical surface complexity were compared between the two groups. Neurodevelopmental assessments of the children with tetralogy of Fallot were performed with the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence. RESULTS: Cortical morphological differences between groups were distributed throughout the right caudal middle frontal gyrus, right fusiform gyrus, right lateral occipital gyrus, right precuneus, and left inferior parietal lobule. Among children with tetralogy of Fallot, altered cortical structures were correlated with the visual spatial index, working memory index, and perioperative variables. CONCLUSION: Our results suggested that abnormal cortical structure in preschool-aged children with tetralogy of Fallot may be the persistent consequence of delayed cortical development in fetuses and cortical morphology can be used as an early potential biomarker to capture regional brain abnormalities that are relevant to neurodevelopmental outcomes. IMPACT: Altered cortical structures in preschool-aged children with ToF were correlated with both neurodevelopmental outcomes and clinical risk factors. Cortical morphology can be used as an effective tool to evaluate neuroanatomical changes and detect underlying neural mechanisms in ToF patients. Abnormal cortical structure may be the continuous consequence of delayed fetal brain development in children with ToF.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to explore the impact of including broader value elements in cost-effectiveness analyses by presenting 2 case studies, one on human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and one on early-stage Hodgkin's lymphoma (ESHL). METHODS: We identified broader value elements (eg, patient and caregiver time, spillover health effects, productivity) from the Second Panel's Impact Inventory and the ISPOR Special Task Force's value flower. We then evaluated the cost-effectiveness of HPV vaccination versus no vaccination (case 1) and combined modality therapy (CMT) versus chemotherapy alone for treatment of adult ESHL (case 2) using published simulation models. For each case study, we compared incremental cost-effectiveness ratios considering health sector impacts only (the "base-case" scenario) with incremental cost-effectiveness ratios incorporating broader value elements. RESULTS: For vaccination of US girls against HPV before sexual debut versus no vaccination, the base-case result was $38 334 per disability-adjusted life-year averted. Including each broader value element made cost-effectiveness progressively more favorable, with HPV vaccination becoming cost-saving (ie, reducing costs and averting more disability-adjusted life-years) when the analysis incorporated productivity costs. For CMT versus chemotherapy alone in patients with ESHL, the base-case result indicated that CMT was cost-saving. Including all elements made this treatment's net monetary benefits (the sum of its averted resource costs and the net value of its health impacts) less favorable, even as the contribution from CMT's near-term health benefits grew. CONCLUSIONS: Including broader value elements can substantially influence cost-effectiveness ratios, although the direction and the magnitude of their impact can differ across interventions and disease context.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Vaccination against herpes zoster (HZ) is an effective strategy in protecting the population against consequences of varicella zoster virus reactivation. Optimal immunogenicity with recombinant zoster vaccine (RZV) relies on completion of the 2-dose series within 2-6 months from the first dose. The objectives of this study were to estimate RZV completion rates and adherence with the recommended administration schedule in the general United States population aged at least 50 years and to evaluate factors influencing completion rates. METHODS: Longitudinal, open-source pharmacy and medical claims databases were analyzed for adults aged at least 50 years with a first RZV prescription filled between October 2017 and September 2019. The data were linked to Experian Marketing Services Consumer View data to obtain information regarding race. Completion rates and adherence were calculated overall and stratified according to claim source, age class, sex, and payer type. Logistic regression models were built for each subpopulation of interest to identify factors correlating with completion rates. RESULTS: Overall, cumulative completion rates were 70.41% and 81.80% at 6 and 12 months, respectively. Median time to second dose was approximately 4 months (4.08-5.13 months) and adherence 67.62%. Completion rates were lower in the medical claims database compared with the pharmacy claims database (48.98% vs. 73.23% at 6 months). Regression models confirmed that pharmacy claim was an independent factor for higher completion rates, while African American race and Medicaid status were associated with lower completion rates. Most comorbidities, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus, were associated with lower completion rates. CONCLUSION: Pharmacists contribute substantially to the overall high RZV completion rates in the United States. However, completion rates can be improved, especially in people receiving their first RZV dose at a physician's office. Future strategies should aim at lowering barriers to completing vaccination series in African Americans, Medicaid beneficiaries, and people with comorbidities.

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus type 39 associated with genital intraepithelial neoplasia and invasive cancers, has a high prevalence in Southwest China. HPV E6, E7 are two main papillomavirus oncoproteins, closely relate to the function of HPV immortalization, cell transformation, and carcinogenesis. L1 is the major capsid protein, can reflect the replication status of the virus in cells and the progression of cervical lesions. The purpose of this study is to reveal the prevalence of HPV 39 and the genetic polymorphisms of HPV39 based on E6, E7 and L1 gene in southwest China. METHODS: Cell samples were collected by cervical scraped for HPV detecting and typing, and HPV39 positive samples were selected out. Important E6, E7 and L1 genes of HPV39 were sequenced and analyzed for the study of HPV39 genetic polymorphisms. Phylogenetic trees were constructed by Maximum-likelihood and Kimura 2-parameters methods in Molecular Evolutionary Genetics Analysis version 6.0. The selection pressures of E6, E7 and L1 genes were estimated by Datamonkey web server. The secondary and three-dimensional structure of HPV39 E6, E7 proteins were created by sopma server and SWISS-MODEL software. RESULTS: 344 HPV39 positive samples were selected from 5718 HPV positive cell samples. Among HPV39 E6-E7 sequences, 20 single nucleotide mutations were detected, including 10 non-synonymous and 10 synonymous mutations; 26 single nucleotide mutations were detected in HPV39 L1 sequences, including 7 non-synonymous and 19 synonymous mutations respectively. 11 novel variants of HPV39 E6-E7 (5 in E6 and 6 in E7) and 14 novel variants of HPV39 L1 were identified in this study. A-branch was the most frequent HPV39 lineage in southwest China during our investigation. Selective pressure analysis showed that codon sites 26, 87, 151 in E6 and 75, 180, 222, 272, 284, 346, 356 in L1 were positively selected sites, as well as codon sites 45, 138, 309, 381 were negative selection sites in L1 gene, E7 has neither positive selection sites nor negative selection sites. A certain degree of secondary and three-dimensional structure dislocation was existed due to the non-synonymous mutations. CONCLUSIONS: Amino acid substitution affected the secondary and three-dimensional structure of HPV39, and resulting in the differences of carcinogenic potential and biological functions as well as the immune response due to the antigen epitopes difference, the antigen epitopes with stronger adaptability in Southwest will be screened out based on the above research results for the later vaccine development. And gene polymorphism of HPV39 in Southwest China may improve the effectiveness of clinical test and vaccine design, specifically for women in Southwest China.

BACKGROUND: High out-of-pocket costs (OOPCs) often are found to be inversely associated with adherence to medical treatment. The introduction of generic aromatase inhibitors (GAIs) significantly reduced the OOPCs of patients. The objective of the current study was to explore the impact of the introduction of GAIs on adjuvant hormone therapy (AHT) adherence over the full course of breast cancer treatment. METHODS: Women aged ≥65 years who were diagnosed with hormone receptor-positive breast cancer from 2007 through mid-2009 were identified from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER)-Medicare-linked database. Multivariate logistic regression was used to estimate the likelihood of AHT initiation and an interrupted time series model was used to predict the association between the introduction of GAIs and AHT adherence. The model was stratified further using Medicare low-income subsidy (LIS) status. RESULTS: A total of 10,905 women were included, approximately 62.8% of whom initiated AHT within the first year of their breast cancer diagnosis. Adjusted adherence among LIS beneficiaries was 11.4% higher than among non-LIS beneficiaries (P < .001). Non-LIS beneficiaries had an overall decreasing trend of adherence (-0.035; P < .001) prior to the introduction of GAIs. They experienced a 3.4% increase in the slope 6 months after the first GAI, anastrozole, entered the market, and an additional 0.8% increase in the slope 6 months after letrozole and exemestane were introduced (P < .001). Adherence change among LIS patients was small and statistically insignificant. CONCLUSIONS: With the introduction of GAIs, the decrease trend of adherence to therapy atteunated over the course of treatment. Although the successful implementation of the Medicare LIS program minimized the OOPCs for financially vulnerable patients, policymakers should be cautious not to introduce disparities for those who may be of low income but ineligible for such a program.

BACKGROUND: Joubert syndrome (OMIM 213300) is an autosomal recessive disorder with gene heterogeneity. Causal genes and their variants have been identified by sequencing or other technologies for Joubert syndrome subtypes. CASE PRESENTATION: A two-year-old boy was diagnosed with Joubert syndrome by global development delay and molar tooth sign of mid-brain. Whole exome sequencing was performed to detect the causative gene variants in this individual, and the candidate pathogenic variants were verified by Sanger sequencing. We identified two pathogenic variants (NM_006346.2: c.1147delC and c.1054A > G) of PIBF1 in this Joubert syndrome individual, which is consistent with the mode of autosomal recessive inheritance. CONCLUSION: In this study, we identified two novel pathogenic variants in PIBF1 in a Joubert syndrome individual using whole exome sequencing, thereby expanding the PIBF1 pathogenic variant spectrum of Joubert syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: To develop a checklist that helps quantify the economic impact associated with fear of contagion and to illustrate how one might use the checklist by presenting a case study featuring China during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak. METHODS: Based on "fearonomic effects," a qualitative framework that conceptualizes the direct and indirect economic effects caused by the fear of contagion, we created a checklist to facilitate empirical estimation. As a case study, we first identified relevant sectors affected by China's lockdown policies implemented just before the Lunar New Year (LNY) week. To quantify the immediate impact, we then estimated the projected spending levels in 2020 in the absence of COVID-19 and compared these projections with actual spending during the LNY week. Data sources used include Chinese and global websites. To characterize uncertainty, we reported upper and lower bound estimates and calculated midpoints for each range. RESULTS: The COVID-19 epidemic is estimated to cost China's economy $283 billion ($196-369 billion), that is, ¥2.0 trillion renminbi (¥1.4-¥2.6 trillion), during the LNY week. Reduced restaurant and movie theater business ($106 [$103-$109] billion, 37.5% [36.4%-38.5%]) and reduced public transportation utilization ($96 [$13-$179] billion dollars, 33.9% [4.6%-63.3%]) explain most of this loss, followed by travel restrictions and the resulting loss of hotel business and tourism ($80.36 billion, 28.4%). CONCLUSION: Our checklist can help quantify the immediate and near-term impact of COVID-19 on a country's economy. It can also help researchers and policy makers consider the broader economic and social consequences when valuing future vaccines and treatments.

Studies have shown that persistent organic pollutants (POPs) can have various health effects. However, little is known about the effects of multiple chemicals with possible common sources of exposure on walking speed, a proxy index reflecting lower limb neuromuscular function and physical function. We simultaneously applied multiple linear and nonlinear statistical models to explore the complex exposure-response relationship between a mixture of 22 selected POPs and walking speed. A total of 14 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), 3 polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), and 5 polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) were measured in the serum of participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 1999 to 2002. Walking speed was measured during a physical examination. Linear regression (LR), least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO), and group LASSO were used to evaluate the linearity of mixtures, while restricted cubic spline (RCS) regression, random forest (RF), and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) models were used to evaluate the nonlinearity of mixtures. Potential confounders were adjusted in the above models. A total of 436 subjects were included in our final analysis. The results of the LR model did not identify any POP exposure that was significantly associated with walking speed. The LASSO results revealed an inverse association of one PCDD congener and two PCDF congeners with walking speed, while the group LASSO analysis identified PCDFs at the exposure level and at the group level. In the RCS analysis, two PCB congeners presented significant overall associations with walking speed. The PCB congener PCB194 showed statistically significant effects on the outcome (Pâ¯=â¯0.01) when a permutation-based RF was used. The BKMR analysis suggested that PCBs and PCDFs (probabilitiesâ¯=â¯0.887 and 0.909, respectively) are potentially associated with walking speed. Complex statistical models, such as RCS regression, RF and BKMR models, can detect the nonlinear and nonadditive relationships between PCBs and walking speed, while LASSO and group LASSO can identify only the linear relationships between PCDFs and walking speed. Fully considering the influence of collinearity in each method during modelling can increase the comprehensiveness and reliability of conclusions in studies of multiple chemicals.

An ideal brain-targeted nanocarrier must be sufficiently potent to penetrate the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and sufficiently competent to target the cells of interest with adequate optimized physiochemical features and biocompatibility. However, it is an enormous challenge to the researchers to organize the above-mentioned properties into a single nanocarrier particle. New frontiers in nanomedicine are advancing the research of new biomaterials. Herein, we demonstrate a straightforward strategy for brain targeting by encapsulating doxorubicin (DOX) into a naturally available and unmodified apoferritin nanocage (DOX-loaded APO). APO can specifically bind to cells expressing transferrin receptor 1 (TfR1). Because of the high expression of TfR1 in both brain endothelial and glioma cells, DOX-loaded APO can cross the BBB and deliver drugs to the glioma with TfR1. Subsequent research demonstrated that the DOX-loaded APO had good physicochemical properties (particle size of 12.03 ± 0.42 nm, drug encapsulation efficiency of 81.8 ± 1.1%) and significant penetrating and targeting effects in the coculture model of bEnd.3 and C6 cells in vitro. In vivo imaging revealed that DOX-loaded APO accumulated specifically in brain tumor tissues. Additionally, in vivo tumor therapy experiments (at a dosage of 1 mg/kg DOX) demonstrated that a longer survival period was observed in mice that had been treated with DOX-loaded APO (30 days) compared with mice receiving free DOX solution (19 days).

Thanks to thermogenesis in the presence of an alternating magnetic field, magnetic nanoparticles could play a promising role in local heating in vivo. However, the flexible control of thermogenesis for the given nanomaterials remains challenging. Here, we propose that the thermogenesis of assembled magnetic nanoparticles can be controlled by orientation of the film relative to an external field. This idea arises from the principle of energy conservation that is formulated by Poynting's theorem in electromagnetics. We firstly prove that the thermogenesis of magnetic nanoparticles under an alternating magnetic field is directly related to the energy flux of the field rather than to the field's intensity. Then, alteration of the orientation can lead to different incident electromagnetic energies for the nanoparticle film, where the cross-section of the energy absorption plays a crucial role. We developed a method to directly measure the complex susceptibility of an assembled film to confirm this point. This work could be of great importance for applications based on the electromagnetic energy conversion of nanomaterials.

The study is aimed to distinguish morphological characteristics of Dalbergiae Lignum collected from crude drug's markets and establish a identification methods and the quality standard for Dalbergiae Lignum. The macroscopic and microscopic features of Dalbergiae Lignum from crude drug's market were observed, analyzed and compared according to Hongmu specification issued by the People's Republic of China in 2000, and by the characteristics recorded in domestic monograph of Mucai Shibie (wood identification). The redwood of Dalbergiae Lignum cut into small pieces as medicinal material are dry heart wood of mahogany (trees from Dalbergia sp.), which characteristics of the small pieces as crude drug are different. There are differences in macroscopic and microscopic features about texture of wood and color, odor, taste, transverse section, radial section, tangential section. The results can provide basis for identification, application and improment of the quality standard of Dalbergiae Lignum as medicinal material.
