RESUMEN

Secondary nanoplastics (NPs) caused by degradation and aging due to environmental factors are the main source of human exposure, and alterations in the physicochemical and biological properties of NPs induced by environmental factors cannot be overlooked. In this study, pristine polystyrene (PS) NPs to obtain ultraviolet (UV)-aged PS NPs (aPS NPs) as secondary NPs is artificially aged. In a mouse oral exposure model, the nephrotoxicity of PS NPs and aPS NPs is compared, and the results showed that aPS NPs exposure induced more serious destruction of kidney tissue structure and function, along with characteristic changes in ferroptosis. Subsequent in vitro experiments revealed that aPS NPs-induced cell death in human renal tubular epithelial cells involved ferroptosis, which is supported by the use of ferrostatin-1, a ferroptosis inhibitor. Notably, it is discovered that aPS NPs can enhance the binding of serum transferrin (TF) to its receptor on the cell membrane by forming an aPS-TF complex, leading to an increase in intracellular Fe2+ and then exacerbation of oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation, which render cells more sensitive to ferroptosis. These findings indicated that UV irradiation can alter the physicochemical and biological properties of NPs, enhancing their kidney biological toxicity risk by inducing ferroptosis.

BACKGROUND: Deficits in prepulse inhibition may be a common feature in first-episode schizophrenia, bipolar disorder (BD) and major depressive disorder (MDD). We sought to explore the levels and viability of prepulse inhibition to differentiate first-episode schizophrenia, BD and MDD in patient populations. METHODS: We tested patients with first-episode schizophrenia, BD or MDD and healthy controls using prepulse inhibition paradigms, namely perceived spatial co-location (PSC-PPI) and perceived spatial separation (PSS-PPI). RESULTS: We included 53 patients with first-episode schizophrenia, 30 with BD and 25 with MDD, as well as 82 healthy controls. The PSS-PPI indicated that the levels of prepulse inhibition were smallest to largest, respectively, in the first-episode schizophrenia, BD, MDD and control groups. Relative to the healthy controls, the prepulse inhibition deficits in the first-episode schizophrenia group were significant (p < 0.001), but the prepulse inhibitions were similar between patients with BD and healthy controls, and between patients with MDD and healthy controls. The receiver operating characteristic curve analysis showed that PSS-PPI (area under the curve [AUC] 0.73, p < 0.001) and latency (AUC 0.72, p < 0.001) were significant for differentiating patients with first-episode schizophrenia or BD from healthy controls. LIMITATIONS: The demographics of the 4 groups were not ideally matched. We did not perform cognitive assessments. The possible confounding effect of medications on prepulse inhibition could not be eliminated. CONCLUSION: The level of prepulse inhibition among patients with first-episode schizophrenia was the lowest, with levels among patients with BD, patients with MDD and healthy controls increasingly higher. The PSS-PPI paradigm was more effective than PSC-PPI to recognize deficits in prepulse inhibition. These results provide a basis for further research on biological indicators that can assist differential diagnoses in psychosis.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the bond strength of different computer-aided design / computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) hybrid ceramic materials following different pretreatments. METHODS: A total of 306 CAD/CAM hybrid material specimens were manufactured, n = 102 for each material (VarseoSmile Crownplus [VSCP] by 3D-printing; Vita Enamic [VE] and Grandio Blocs [GB] by milling). Each material was randomly divided into six groups regarding different pretreatment strategies: control, silane, sandblasting (50 µm aluminum oxide particles), sandblasting + silane, etching (9% hydrofluorics acid), etching + silane. Subsequently, surface roughness (Ra) values, surface free energy (SFE) were measured. Each specimen was bonded with a dual-cured adhesive composite. Half of the specimens were subjected to thermocycling (5000 cycles, 5-55 °C). The shear bond strength (SBS) test was performed. Data were analyzed by using a two-way analysis of variance, independent t-test, and Mann-Whitney-U-test (α = 0.05). RESULTS: Material type (p = 0.001), pretreatment strategy (p < 0.001), and the interaction (p < 0.001) all had significant effects on Ra value. However, only etching on VSCP and VE surface increased SFE value significantly. Regarding SBS value, no significant difference was found among the three materials (p = 0.937), while the pretreatment strategy significantly influenced SBS (p < 0.05). Etching on VSCP specimens showed the lowest mean value among all groups, while sandblasting and silane result in higher SBS for all test materials. CONCLUSIONS: The bond strength of CAD/CAM hybrid ceramic materials for milling and 3D-printing was comparable. Sandblasting and silane coupling were suitable for both millable and printable materials, while hydrofluoric etching should not be recommended for CAD/CAM hybrid ceramic materials. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Since comparable evidence between 3D-printable and millable CAD/CAM dental hybrid materials is scarce, the present study gives clear guidance for pretreatment planning on different materials.

The environmental behavior of and risks associated with nanoplastics (NPs) have attracted considerable attention. However, compared to pristine NPs, environmental factors such as ultraviolet (UV) irradiation that lead to changes in the toxicity of NPs have rarely been studied. We evaluated the changes in morphology and physicochemical properties of polystyrene (PS) NPs before and after UV irradiation, and compared their hepatotoxicity in mice. The results showed that UV irradiation caused particle size reduction and increased the carbonyl index (CI) and negative charge on the particle surface. UV-aged PS NPs (aPS NPs) could induce the generation of hydroxyl radicals (·OH), but also further promoted the generation of ·OH in the Fenton reaction system. Hepatic pathological damage was more severe in mice exposed to aPS NPs, accompanied by a large number of vacuoles and hepatocyte balloon-like changes and more marked perturbations in blood glucose and serum lipoprotein, alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase levels. In addition, exposure to PS NPs and aPS NPs, especially aPS NPs, triggered oxidative stress and significantly damaged the antioxidant capacity of mice liver. Compared with PS NPs, exposure to aPS NPs increased the number of altered metabolites in hepatic and corresponding metabolic pathways, especially glutathione metabolism. Our research suggests that UV irradiation can disrupt the redox balance in organisms by promoting the production of ·OH, enhancing PS NPs-induced liver damage and metabolic disorders. This study will help us understand the health risks of NPs and to avoid underestimation of the risks of NPs in nature.

Present evidence suggests that the administration of antibiotics, particularly aminopenicillins, may increase the risk of rash in children with infectious mononucleosis (IM). This retrospective, multicenter cohort study of children with IM was conducted to explore the association between antibiotic exposure in IM children and the risk of rash. A robust error generalized linear regression was performed to address the potential cluster effect, as well as confounding factors such as age and sex. A total of 767 children (aged from 0 to 18 years) with IM from 14 hospitals in Guizhou Province were included in the final analysis. The regression analysis implied that exposure to antibiotics was associated with a significantly increased incidence of overall rash in IM children (adjusted odds ratio [AOR], 1.47; 95% confidence interval [CI], ~1.04 to 2.08; P = 0.029). Of 92 overall rash cases, 43 were probably related to antibiotic exposure: two cases (4.08%) in the amoxicillin-treated group and 41 (8.15%) in the group treated with other antibiotics. Regression analysis indicated that the risk of rash induced by amoxicillin in IM children was similar to that induced by other penicillins (AOR, 1.12; 95% CI, ~0.13 to 9.67), cephalosporins (AOR, 2.45; 95% CI, ~0.43 to 14.02), or macrolides (AOR, 0.91; 95% CI, ~0.15 to 5.43). Antibiotic exposure may be associated with an increased risk of overall rash in IM children, but amoxicillin was not found to be associated with any increased risk of rash during IM compared to other antibiotics. We suggest that clinicians be vigilant against the occurrence of rash in IM children receiving antibiotic therapy, rather than indiscriminately avoiding prescribing amoxicillin.

Lutein (LU) is a carotenoid that has recently been implicated in multiple roles in fibrosis, inflammation, and oxidative stress. Thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO) is particularly relevant to these pathological changes. We thus aim to probe the potential therapeutic effects of TAO in an in vitro model. We used LU pre-treating OFs derived from patients with TAO or not, then treated with TGF-ß1(or IL-1ß)to induce fibrosis (or inflammation). We analyzed the different expressions of related genes and proteins, and the molecular mechanism pathway on TAO OFs was screened by RNA sequencing, which is identified in vitro. We found that LU attenuates fibrotic and inflammatory effects in TAO. LU inhibited ACTA2, COL1A1, FN1, and CTGF mRNA expression and suppressed α-SMA, and FN1 protein expression induced by TGF-ß1. Besides, LU suppressed OFs migration. Besides, it is shown that LU suppressed inflammation-related genes, such as IL-6, IL-8, CXCL1, and MCP-1. Moreover, LU inhibited oxidative stress induced by IL-1ß, which is analyzed by DHE fluorescent probe staining. RNA sequencing suggested ERK/AP-1 pathway may be the molecular mechanism of LU protective effect on TAO, which is identified by RT-qPCR and western-blot. In summary, this study provides the first evidence that LU significantly attenuates the pathogenic manifestations of TAO by inhibiting the expression of fibrotic and inflammation-related genes and ROS produced by OFs. These data suggested that LU may be a potential medicine for TAO.

BACKGROUND: This is a cross-sectional study comparing the degree of subjective quality of life (QOL) impairment and its predictive factors in first-episode schizophrenia (FES) and individuals at clinical high-risk (CHR) for psychosis. METHODS: Seventy-seven FES, 59 CHR, and 64 healthy controls (HC) were included. The QOL of all participants was assessed using the World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQOL)-Brief Form (BREF). Psychiatric symptoms of individuals with FES were assessed with the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS), five factors were further identified through factor analysis; for individuals with CHR and HC, the Scale of Prodromal Symptoms (SOPS) was used. RESULTS: The total and four sub-domain scores of the WHOQOL-BREF in the FES and CHR groups were lower than those of the HC group. The overall and psychological health scores in the CHR group were lowest. In the FES group, after applying Bonferroni's correction, there is a negative correlation between the total QOL scores and anxiety/depressive symptom scores (r = -0.34, P = 0.003). The stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that the QOL of both FES and CHR group were negatively affected by anxiety/depressive symptoms and unemployment (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Compared with FES, CHR individuals are more dissatisfied with their QOL. Although diagnostic assessment of FES and CHR relies heavily on positive symptoms, the QOL is more affected by anxiety/depressive symptoms and social functioning.

Platelet-derived extracellular vesicles (P-EVs), as the most abundant vesicles in blood, have been proven to play cardinal roles in cardiovascular injury. RNAs (especially miRNAs) carried by P-EVs can be transferred to the receptor, which plays a critical role in regulating vascular endothelial function. PM2.5 is one of the most well-known risk factors that cause cardiovascular disease. Therefore, the objective of the current study was to explore whether exposure to PM2.5 would alter the gene expression profile of P-EVs, and to further elucidate the role of RNAs (especially miRNAs) carried by P-EVs in cardiovascular injury induced by PM2.5 exposure. P-EVs were isolated from the platelet-rich plasma which was exposed and unexposed to PM2.5, and the differentially expressed target genes were evaluated using whole-transcriptome gene sequencing. Rats were treated with P-EVs under different exposure conditions (a protein concentration of 50 µg/mL) and an equal volume of normal saline. The pathological damage of the thoracic aorta and cardiac tissue was evaluated and the coagulation function of the rats was detected. The differentially expressed genes were shown to be mainly concentrated in inflammation, angiogenesis, and apoptosis-related pathways. Moreover, P-EVs extracted from PM2.5-exposed plasma had the potential to trigger an inflammatory response, impair vascular endothelial function, disrupt the normal coagulation process, and promote a prothrombotic state. Our study indicated that PM2.5 induces cardiovascular injury in rats by interfering with the gene expression of P-EVs. It will provide new targets for studying the mechanism involved in PM2.5-induced cardiovascular injury.

With the detection of nano-plastics (NPs) in daily essentials and drinking water, the potential harm of NPs to human health has become the focus of global attention. Studies have shown that long term exposure to NPs can lead to disorders of glucose and lipid metabolism in organisms, while the effects of short term exposure are rarely reported. Moreover, environmental factors cause the aging of NPs, and it is unclear whether this has an effect on their toxicity. In this study, we use 100 nm polystyrene (PS) NPs and ultraviolet (UV) aging PS (aPS) NPs to gavage mice for 7 days at an exposure dose of 50 mg/kg/day. To evaluate the effects of exposure on mice hepatic glucose lipid metabolism, we performed blood biochemical, pathological and metabolomic analyses. The results showed that exposure to PS NPs and aPS NPs increased serum glucose, disrupted serum lipoprotein levels, and up-regulated the expression levels of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/ phosphoprotein kinase B (p-AKT)/Glucose transporter 4 (GLUT4) proteins in the glucose metabolism pathway. The expression levels of key proteins sterol regulatory element binding protein-1 (SREBP-1)/peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ (PPARγ)/adipose triglyceride lipase (ATGL) in the lipid metabolism signaling pathway were significantly increased. These findings suggest that short term exposure to PS NPs and aPS NPs induces glycolipid metabolism disturbance in mice, which may subsequently awaken the mice to self-regulate the serum levels of various lipoproteins and the expression of related key proteins. Compared with PS NPs, the aPS NPs interfered more strongly with glucose metabolism, and the corresponding self-regulation in mice was also more obvious. These findings not only provide a basis for environmental factors to increase the health risk of NPs but also provided a reference for the selection of test substances for further studies on the toxicity of NPs.

A Gram-stain-negative, non-spore-forming and rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain NS-102T, was isolated from herbicide-contaminated soil sampled in Nanjing, PR China, and its taxonomic status was investigated by a polyphasic approach. Cell growth of strain NS-102T occurred at 16-42 °C (optimum, 30 °C), at pH 5.0-8.0 (optimum, pH 6.0) and in the presence of 0-3.5 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, without addition of NaCl). The 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain NS-102T shows high similarity to that of Agriterribacter humi YJ03T (96.9 % similarity), followed by Terrimonas terrae T16R-129T (93.8 %) and Terrimonas pekingensis QHT (93.6 %). Average nucleotide identity, average amino acid identity and digital DNA-DNA hybridization values between the draft genomes of strain NS-102T and A. humi YJ03T were 72.5, 69.4 and 18.6%, respectively. The only respiratory quinone was MK-7, and phosphatidylethanolamine and unidentified lipids were the major polar lipids. The major cellular fatty acids of strain NS-102T contained high amounts of iso-C15 : 0 (24.6 %), iso-C17 : 03-OH (24.1 %), iso-C15 : 0 G (16.6 %) and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1 ω6c and/or C16 : 1 ω7c) (15.6 %). The G+C content of the total DNA was determined to be 40.0 mol%. The morphological, physiological, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic analyses clearly distinguished this strain from its closest phylogenetic neighbours. Thus, strain NS-102T represents a novel species of the genus Agriterribacter, for which the name Agriterribacter soli sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is NS-102T (=CCTCC AB 2017249T=KCTC 62322T).

The present study aimed to explore the association between dietary patterns in abdominal obesity obtained by reduced-rank regression (RRR) with visceral fat index (VFI) as a dependent variable and dyslipidemia in rural adults in Henan, China. A total of 29538 people aged 18-79 were selected from the Henan Rural Cohort Study. RRR analysis was used to identify dietary patterns; logistic regression analysis and restricted cubic spline regression models were applied to analyze the association between dietary patterns in abdominal obesity and dyslipidemia. VFI was used as a mediator to estimate the mediation effect. The dietary pattern in abdominal obesity was characterized by high carbohydrate and red meat intake and low consumption of fresh fruits, vegetables, milk, etc. After full adjustment, the highest quartile of dietary pattern scores was significantly associated with an increased risk of dyslipidemia (OR: 1·33, 95 % CI 1·23-1·44, Ptrend < 0·001), there was a non-linear dose-response relationship between them (Poverall-association < 0·001, Pnon-lin-association = 0·022). The result was similar in dose-response between the dietary pattern scores and VFI. The indirect effect partially mediated by VFI was significant (OR: 1·07, 95 % CI 1·06-1·08). VIF explained approximately 53·3 % of odds of dyslipidemia related to the dietary pattern. Abdominal obesity dietary pattern scores positively affected VFI and dyslipidemia; there was a dose-response in both relationships. Dyslipidemia progression increased with higher abdominal obesity dietary pattern scores. In addition, VFI played a partial mediating role in relationship between abdominal obesity dietary pattern and dyslipidemia.

Fixed carbon source and different dopants are mainly used to study the effect of heteroatoms on the structure and properties of carbon dots (CDs). As reactants, some dopants with conjugated structure and high nitrogen content may have important contributions to the structure and properties of doped CDs in addition to providing heteroatoms. Herein, to study the effect of fixed dopant on the structure and properties of CDs, three different CDs were synthesized using nicotinamide (NAA) and three commonα-hydroxy acids (4-5 carbon atoms), and the optimal conditions were determined by orthogonal experimentation. Transmission electron microscopic micrographs showed that the average size of CDs based on nicotinamide are relatively large, up to 19.40 nm. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy demonstrated that these CDs have graphite nitrogen and several functional group structures. Ultraviolet-visible absorption spectra, fluorescence emission spectra, and fluorescence lifetime illustrated that these CDs have similar emission centers (460-470 nm) and fluorescence processes. The influence of carbon source on the surface structure of CDs was determined by systematically analyzing the response of these CDs in different pH ranges. DFT calculations revealed the distribution characteristics of the electrons in the excited state at the HOMO and LUMO energy levels of CDs. All the above characterizations and calculations proved that NAA is a desirable dopant with an important contribution to the structure and properties of CDs.

ABSTRAC: OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to preliminarily and exploratorily examine the associations between childhood trauma (CT), its subtypes, and personality traits among unaffected first-degree relatives (FDR, children, or siblings) of patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). METHODS: The study sample included three subgroups: MDD patients (N = 85), Patients' FDRs (N = 35), and healthy control individuals (HC, N = 89). The Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) was used to assess childhood trauma and the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire was used to assess personality traits. RESULTS: Significant differences were found in a few personality traits (p < 0.05 for extraversion, neuroticism, and psychoticism) among MDD patients, FDR, and HC, and there were no significant differences between HC and FDR. In the FDR group, compared with those without CT, participants with CT scored significantly higher for neuroticism (N) (F = 3.246, p = 0.046). CT was significantly associated with N, psychoticism (P) and Lie (L), and the strongest association was between CT total score and N. Significantly positive correlations were found between N and sexual abuse (SA) (r = 0.344, p = 0.043), emotional neglect (EN) (r = 0.394, p = 0.019), physical neglect (PN) (r = 0.393, p = 0.019), and CTQ total score (r = 0.452, p = 0.006); between P and CTQ total score (r = 0.336, p = 0.049); and significant negative correlations were found between L and EN (r = -0.446, p = 0.007), CTQ total score (r = -0.375, p = 0.027). CONCLUSION: In unaffected FDRs, there were significant associations between childhood trauma and a few personality traits, including neuroticism, psychoticism, and lie, and emotional neglect was significantly associated with neuroticism.

BACKGROUND: Quantum dots (QDs) have gained increased attention for their extensive biomedical and electronic products applications. Due to the high priority of QDs in contacting the circulatory system, understanding the hemocompatibility of QDs is one of the most important aspects for their biosafety evaluation. Thus far, the effect of QDs on coagulation balance haven't been fully understood, and limited studies also have yet elucidated the potential mechanism from the perspective of interaction of QDs with coagulation-related proteins. RESULTS: QDs induced the derangement of coagulation balance by prolonging the activated partial thromboplastin time and prothrombin time as well as changing the expression levels of coagulation and fibrinolytic factors. The contact of QDs with PTM (prothrombin), PLG (plasminogen) and FIB (fibrinogen) which are primary coagulation-related proteins in the coagulation and fibrinolysis systems formed QDs-protein conjugates through hydrogen-bonding and hydrophobic interaction. The affinity of proteins with QDs followed the order of PTM > PLG > FIB, and was larger with CdTe/ZnS QDs than CdTe QDs. Binding with QDs not only induced static fluorescence quenching of PTM, PLG and FIB, but also altered their conformational structures. The binding of QDs to the active sites of PTM, PLG and FIB may promote the activation of proteins, thus interfering the hemostasis and fibrinolysis processes. CONCLUSIONS: The interactions of QDs with PTM, PLG and FIB may be key contributors for interference of coagulation balance, that is helpful to achieve a reliable and comprehensive evaluation on the potential biological influence of QDs from the molecular level.

BACKGROUND: A percentage of women patients with schizophrenia may suffer from menstrual dysfunction associated with antipsychotic medication. This study evaluated menstrual dysfunction in women with schizophrenia given maintenance risperidone, and investigated the association between menstrual dysfunction and the duration and dose of risperidone and clinical symptoms. METHODS: The data of 161 women were obtained from the Risperidone Maintenance Treatment in Schizophrenia study, including patients' characteristics, menstrual conditions, and duration and dosage of risperidone. Qualitative data regarding menstrual health were evaluated at baseline (clinical stabilization after 4-8 weeks maintenance treatment with a standard risperidone dose 4-8 mg/d) and follow-up interviews up to 52 weeks. RESULTS: At baseline, 73.2% (119/161) of the patients were eumenorrheic; specific rates of menstrual dysfunction were 14.3% (23/161) irregular menstruation, 6.8% (11/161) oligomenorrhea, and 5.0% (8/161) amenorrhea. At the end of follow-up, 16.0% (19/119) of those with eumenorrhea at baseline reported menstrual dysfunction. During the entire risperidone maintenance treatment, 37.9% (61/161) experienced menstrual dysfunction. The range of onset time from the beginning of risperidone treatment to menstrual dysfunction was 64 to 243 days. Risperidone dose was positively associated with menstrual dysfunction (r = 0.187, P = 0.046). The total Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale score was significantly associated with menstrual dysfunction (r = 0.274, P = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Attention should be given to menstrual dysfunction of women with schizophrenia that is an adverse effect of risperidone maintenance treatment. Menstrual dysfunction may occur early or late during maintenance treatment, partly depending on the dose.ClinicalTrials.govidentifier: NCT00848432.

Surgical treatment of eyelid margin lesions is challenging, and few studies focused on laser therapy of such type of lesions. To evaluate the safety and effectiveness of ultrapulse CO2 laser treatment under a microscope for benign eyelid margin lesions, we performed microscopic ultrapulse CO2 laser treatment win 132 patients with benign eyelid margin lesions for cosmetic reasons. Measurements included cosmetic results, complications and patients' satisfaction. Eighty lesions involved the gray line and 24 lesions were in the lacrimal region. All patients achieved satisfactory cosmetic and therapeutic outcomes. Eyelid contour recovered well with no scar and no malposition. No secondary epiphora was noted after the lesions adjacent to the lacrimal punctum were removed. At the end of follow-up, only 2 patients had mild hypopigmentation and only 1 patient required repeat laser therapy for recurrence. It turned out that ultrapulse CO2 laser treatment under a microscope is a dependable, safe, and effective method for the treatment of benign eyelid margin lesions. It is an excellent alternative to traditional surgery, especially for lesions involving the gray line or positioned in proximity to the lacrimal punctum. It is beneficial for simplifying the treatment, improving the cosmetic result, and maintaining eyelid function.

Root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.) are soilborne pathogens that infect vegetable crops and cause major economic losses worldwide annually. Therefore, there is an urgent need for novel nematicides or biological control agents to reduce the damage caused by root-knot nematodes. In this study, we tested efficacy of the Bacillus cereus strain Bc-cm103, isolated from the rhizoplane of Cucumis metuliferus, against Meloidogyne incognita. Strain Bc-cm103 fermentation broth caused 100% mortality of the nematode second-stage juveniles within 12 h and decreased the egg hatching rate by 40.06% within 72 h compared with sterile water. Confocal laser-scanning microscopy revealed that strain Bc-cm103 formed a biofilm on cucumber (C. sativus) roots, which protected the roots from the infection of M. incognita. Additionally, strain Bc-cm103 activated the defense-responsive genes PR1, PR2, LOX1, and CTR1 in cucumber. Furthermore, strain Bc-cm103 significantly reduced the appearance of root galls in pot, split-root, and field tests. These results indicated that B. cereus strain Bc-cm103 had a strong suppressive effect on M. incognita and therefore could be used as a potential biocontrol agent against this pathogen.

Bacillus cereus strain Bc-cm103 shows nematicidal activity and, therefore, has been used as a biological control agent to control the root-knot nematode Meloidogyne incognita. However, it remains unknown whether volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced by B. cereus strain Bc-cm103 are effective in biocontrol against M. incognita. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the activity of Bc-cm103 VOCs against M. incognita. The B. cereus strain Bc-cm103 significantly repelled the second-stage juveniles (J2s) of M. incognita. In vitro evaluation of VOCs produced by the fermentation of Bc-cm103 in a three-compartment Petri dish revealed the mortality rates of M. incognita J2s as 90.8% at 24 h and 97.2% at 48 h. Additionally, evaluation of the ability of Bc-cm103 VOCs to suppress M. incognita infection in a double-layered pot test showed that root galls on cucumber roots decreased by 46.1%. Furthermore, 21 VOCs were identified from strain Bc-cm103 by solid-phase microextraction gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, including alkanes, alkenes, esters, and sulfides. Among them, dimethyl disulfide (30.63%) and S-methyl ester butanethioic acid (30.29%) were reported to have strong nematicidal activity. Together, these results suggest that B. cereus strain Bc-cm103 exhibits fumigation activity against M. incognita.

With the increased production, usage, and disposal of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs), there is growing concern over the fate of ENPs in the environment, their potential bioavailability and ecotoxicity. It is assumed that bioavailability and uptake into organisms depend on the environmental conditions as well as the physicochemical properties of ENPs, such as particle size or surface coating. A major sink for nanoparticles is expected to be sediments due to sorption and agglomeration processes. Accordingly, this study, investigated how different sizes (5 and 30 nm) and surface coatings of three different AuENPs based on citrate (AuCIT), mercaptoundecanoic acid (AuMUDA), and bovine serum albumin (AuBSA) affected the retention of ENPs in a sediment-water system and subsequent uptake into sediment-dwelling organism Lumbriculus variegatus (L. variegatus). Surface charge was found to be one of the factors affecting retention of the AuENPs in the sediment-water system. More negatively charged AuENPs had a higher mass fraction in the supernatant after 24 h exposure. Furthermore, the stability of AuENPs in the supernatant depended more on their zeta potential than particle size (5 nm vs. 30 nm). The surface coating was found to play an important role in the uptake (after depuration) of Au in L. variegatus, that is, AuBSA > AuCIT > AuMUDA.

BACKGROUND: To assess the reliability and validity of Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) for patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and to assess the feasibility of its use in psychiatric hospitals in China. METHODS: One hundred nine outpatients or inpatients with MDD who qualified the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fourth edition (DSM-IV) criteria completed PHQ-9 and Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD-17). Two weeks after the initial evaluation, 54 randomly selected patients underwent repeat assessment using PHQ-9. For validity analysis, the construct validity and criterion validity were assessed. The internal concordance coefficient and the test-retest correlation coefficients were used for reliability analysis. The correlation between total score and scores for each item and the correlation between scores for various items were evaluated using Pearson correlation coefficient. RESULTS: Principal components factor analysis showed good construct validity of the PHQ-9. PHQ-9 total score showed a positive correlation with HAMD-17 total score (r = 0.610, P < 0.001). With HAMD as the standard, PHQ-9 depression scores of 7, 15, and 21 points were used as cut-offs for mild, moderate, and severe depression, respectively. Consistency assessment was conducted between the depression severity as assessed by PHQ-9 and HAMD (Kappa = 0.229, P < 0.001). Intraclass correlation coefficient between PHQ-9 total score and HAMD total score was 0.594 (95% confidence interval, 0.456-0.704, P < 0.001). The Cronbach's α coefficient of PHQ-9 was 0.892. Correlation coefficients between each item score and the total score ranged from 0.567-0.789 (P < 0.01); the correlation coefficient between various item scores ranged from 0.233-0.747. The test-retest correlation coefficient for total score was 0.737. CONCLUSIONS: PHQ-9 showed good reliability and validity, and high adaptability for patients with MDD in psychiatric hospital. It is a simple, rapid, effective, and reliable tool for screening and evaluation of the severity of depression.
