Multistep mast cell desensitization blocks the release of mediators following IgE crosslinking with increasing doses of Ag. Although its in vivo application has led to the safe reintroduction of drugs and foods in IgE-sensitized patients at risk for anaphylaxis, the mechanisms of the inhibitory process have remained elusive. We sought to investigate the kinetics, membrane, and cytoskeletal changes and to identify molecular targets. IgE-sensitized wild-type murine (WT) and FcεRIα humanized (h) bone marrow mast cells were activated and desensitized with DNP, nitrophenyl, dust mites, and peanut Ags. The movements of membrane receptors, FcεRI/IgE/Ag, actin, and tubulin and the phosphorylation of Syk, Lyn, P38-MAPK, and SHIP-1 were assessed. Silencing SHIP-1 protein was used to dissect the SHIP-1 role. Multistep IgE desensitization of WT and transgenic human bone marrow mast cells blocked the release of ß-hexosaminidase in an Ag-specific fashion and prevented actin and tubulin movements. Desensitization was regulated by the initial Ag dose, number of doses, and time between doses. FcεRI, IgE, Ags, and surface receptors were not internalized during desensitization. Phosphorylation of Syk, Lyn, p38 MAPK, and SHIP-1 increased in a dose-response manner during activation; in contrast, only SHIP-1 phosphorylation increased in early desensitization. SHIP-1 phosphatase function had no impact on desensitization, but silencing SHIP-1 increased ß-hexoxaminidase release, preventing desensitization. Multistep IgE mast cell desensitization is a dose- and time-regulated process that blocks ß-hexosaminidase, impacting membrane and cytoskeletal movements. Signal transduction is uncoupled, favoring early phosphorylation of SHIP-1. Silencing SHIP-1 impairs desensitization without implicating its phosphatase function.

It is controversial whether mitochondrial dysfunction in skeletal muscle is the cause or consequence of metabolic disorders. Herein, we demonstrate that in vivo inhibition of mitochondrial ATP synthase in muscle alters whole-body lipid homeostasis. Mice with restrained mitochondrial ATP synthase activity presented intrafiber lipid droplets, dysregulation of acyl-glycerides, and higher visceral adipose tissue deposits, poising these animals to insulin resistance. This mitochondrial energy crisis increases lactate production, prevents fatty acid ß-oxidation, and forces the catabolism of branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) to provide acetyl-CoA for de novo lipid synthesis. In turn, muscle accumulation of acetyl-CoA leads to acetylation-dependent inhibition of mitochondrial respiratory complex II enhancing oxidative phosphorylation dysfunction which results in augmented ROS production. By screening 702 FDA-approved drugs, we identified edaravone as a potent mitochondrial antioxidant and enhancer. Edaravone administration restored ROS and lipid homeostasis in skeletal muscle and reinstated insulin sensitivity. Our results suggest that muscular mitochondrial perturbations are causative of metabolic disorders and that edaravone is a potential treatment for these diseases.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term (5 years) clinical efficacy of the one-abutment one-time protocol (test) versus the standard of care by placing the definitive abutment on the day of the prosthetic delivery (control). MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, 39 subjects with 60 implants were randomly allocated to either the test or the control group. Changes in the radiographic interproximal bone levels (DIB), modified sulcus bleeding index, probing depth, modified plaque index, papilla fill (Jemt score), incidence of peri-implantitis and peri-implant mucositis as well as patient-reported outcomes measures (PROMs) were collected and compared at 1, 3 and 5 years. RESULTS: At 5 years, the control group showed a greater, although not statistically significant, change in mean DIB values (0.97 mm vs. 0.53 mm). Regarding the other clinical parameters evaluated, no statistically significant differences were observed between groups at any time point. At 5 years, 51% of the implants presented peri-implant mucositis (25.5% in the control and 23.5% in the test), and only one implant in the test group developed peri-implantitis. CONCLUSIONS: The connection and disconnection of healing abutments during the healing period was not associated with higher long-term bone loss. Clinical outcomes and PROMs were similar between groups.

A group of functionalized fluorene derivatives that are structurally similar to the cellular prion protein ligand N,N'-(methylenedi-4,1-phenylene)bis [2-(1-pyrrolidinyl)acetamide] (GN8) have been synthesized. These compounds show remarkable native fluorescence due to the fluorene ring. The substituents introduced at positions 2 and 7 of the fluorene moiety are sufficiently flexible to accommodate the beta-conformational folding that develops in amyloidogenic proteins. Changes in the native fluorescence of these fluorene derivatives provide evidence of transformations in the amyloidogenic aggregation processes of insulin. The increase observed in the fluorescence intensity of the sensors in the presence of native insulin or amyloid aggregates suggest their potential use as fluorescence probes for detecting abnormal conformations; therefore, the compounds can be proposed for use as "turn-on" fluorescence sensors. Protein-sensor dissociation constants are in the 5-10 µM range and an intermolecular charge transfer process between the protein and the sensors can be successfully exploited for the sensitive detection of abnormal insulin conformations. The values obtained for the Stern-Volmer quenching constant for compound 4 as a consequence of the sensor-protein interaction are comparable to those obtained for the reference compound GN8. Fluorene derivatives showed good performance in scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS), and they show antioxidant capacity according to the FRAP and DPPH assays.

BACKGROUND: Neutrophil count:lymphocyte count ratio (NLR) may be a prognostic factor for men with advanced prostate cancer. We hypothesized that it is associated with prostate-specific antigen (PSA) response and survival in men treated with prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA)-targeted radionuclide therapy (TRT). METHODS: Data of 180 men with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) who were treated in sequential prospective radionuclide clinical trials from 2002 to 2021 (utilizing 177Lu-J591, 90Y-J591, 177Lu-PSMA-617, or 225Ac-J591) were retrospectively analyzed. We used a logistic regression to determine the association between NLR and ≥50% PSA decline (PSA50) and a Cox proportional hazards model to investigate the association between NLR and overall survival (OS). RESULTS: A total of 94 subjects (52.2%) received 177Lu-J591, 51 (28.3%) 177Lu-PSMA-617, 28 (15.6%) 225Ac-J591, and 7 (3.9%) 90Y-J591. The median NLR of 3.75 was used as cut-off (low vs. high NLR; n = 90, respectively). On univariate analysis, NLR was not associated with PSA50 (HR 1.08; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.99-1.17, p = 0.067). However, it was associated with worse OS (hazard ratio [HR] 1.06, 95% CI 1.02-1.09, p = 0.002), also after controlling for circulating tumor cell count and cancer and leukemia group B risk group (HR 1.05; 95% CI 1.003-1.11, p = 0.036). Men with high NLR were at a higher hazard of death from all causes (HR 1.43, 95% CI 1.05-1.94, p = 0.024). CONCLUSIONS: NLR provides prognostic information in the setting of patients with mCRPC receiving treatment with PSMA-TRT.

BACKGROUND: Viral rewiring of host bioenergetics and immunometabolism may provide novel targets for therapeutic interventions against viral infections. Here, we have explored the effect on bioenergetics during the infection with the mosquito-borne flavivirus West Nile virus (WNV), a medically relevant neurotropic pathogen causing outbreaks of meningitis and encephalitis worldwide. RESULTS: A systematic literature search and meta-analysis pointed to a misbalance of glucose homeostasis in the central nervous system of WNV patients. Real-time bioenergetic analyses confirmed upregulation of aerobic glycolysis and a reduction of mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation during viral replication in cultured cells. Transcriptomics analyses in neural tissues from experimentally infected mice unveiled a glycolytic shift including the upregulation of hexokinases 2 and 3 (Hk2 and Hk3) and pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase 4 (Pdk4). Treatment of infected mice with the Hk inhibitor, 2-deoxy-D-glucose, or the Pdk4 inhibitor, dichloroacetate, alleviated WNV-induced neuroinflammation. CONCLUSIONS: These results highlight the importance of host energetic metabolism and specifically glycolysis in WNV infection in vivo. This study provides proof of concept for the druggability of the glycolytic pathway for the future development of therapies to combat WNV pathology.

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer is one of the most lethal tumors with a poor survival rate even in those patients receiving new therapies. Metabolism is considered one of the hallmarks in carcinogenesis and lipid metabolism is emerging as a significant contributor to tumor metabolic reprogramming. We previously described a profile of some lipid metabolism related genes with potential prognostic value in advanced lung cancer. AIM: To analyze clinical and pathological characteristics related to a specific metabolic lipid genomic signature from patients with advanced lung cancer and to define differential outcome. METHODS: Ninety samples from NSCLC (non-small cell lung cancer) and 61 from SCLC (small cell lung cancer) patients were obtained. We performed a survival analysis based on lipid metabolic genes expression and clinical characteristics. The primary end point of the study was the correlation between gene expression, clinical characteristics and survival. RESULTS: Clinical variables associated with overall survival (OS) in NSCLC patients were clinical stage, adenocarcinoma histology, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG), number and site of metastasis, plasma albumin levels and first-line treatment with platinum. As for SCLC patients, clinical variables that impacted OS were ECOG, number of metastasis locations, second-line treatment administration and Diabetes Mellitus (DM). None of them was associated with gene expression, indicating that alterations in lipid metabolism are independent molecular variables providing complementary information of lung cancer patient outcome. CONCLUSIONS: Specific clinical features as well as the expression of lipid metabolism-related genes might be potential biomarkers with differential outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Ultra-hypofractionated image-guided stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) is increasingly used for definitive treatment of localized prostate cancer. Magnetic resonance imaging-guided radiotherapy (MRgRT) facilitates improved visualization, real-time tracking of targets and/or organs-at-risk (OAR), and capacity for adaptive planning which may translate to improved targeting and reduced toxicity to surrounding tissues. Given promising results from NRG-GU003 comparing conventional and moderate hypofractionation in the post-operative setting, there is growing interest in exploring ultra-hypofractionated post-operative regimens. It remains unclear whether this can be done safely and whether MRgRT may help mitigate potential toxicity. SHORTER (NCT04422132) is a phase II randomized trial prospectively evaluating whether salvage MRgRT delivered in 5 fractions versus 20 fractions is non-inferior with respect to gastrointestinal (GI) and genitourinary (GU) toxicities at 2-years post-treatment. METHODS: A total of 136 patients will be randomized in a 1:1 ratio to salvage MRgRT in 5 fractions or 20 fractions using permuted block randomization. Patients will be stratified according to baseline Expanded Prostate Cancer Index Composite (EPIC) bowel and urinary domain scores as well as nodal treatment and androgen deprivation therapy (ADT). Patients undergoing 5 fractions will receive a total of 32.5 Gy over 2 weeks and patients undergoing 20 fractions will receive a total of 55 Gy over 4 weeks, with or without nodal coverage (25.5 Gy over 2 weeks and 42 Gy over 4 weeks) and ADT as per the investigator's discretion. The co-primary endpoints are change scores in the bowel and the urinary domains of the EPIC. The change scores will reflect the 2-year score minus the pre-treatment (baseline) score. The secondary endpoints include safety endpoints, including change in GI and GU symptoms at 3, 6, 12 and 60 months from completion of treatment, and efficacy endpoints, including time to progression, prostate cancer specific survival and overall survival. DISCUSSION: The SHORTER trial is the first randomized phase II trial comparing toxicity of ultra-hypofractionated and hypofractionated MRgRT in the salvage setting. The primary hypothesis is that salvage MRgRT delivered in 5 fractions will not significantly increase GI and GU toxicities when compared to salvage MRgRT delivered in 20 fractions. RESEARCH QUESTION: Are the alterations observed in the endometriotic cells, such as progesterone resistance, already present in the eutopic endometrium or acquired in the ectopic location? DESIGN: The response to decidualization with progesterone and cyclic AMP for up to 28 days was compared in different endometrial stromal cell (EnSC) lines established from samples of endometriomas (eEnSC), eutopic endometrium from women with endometriosis (eBEnSC), endometrial tissue from healthy women (BEnSC) and menstrual blood from healthy donors (mEnSC). RESULTS: Usual features of decidualized cells, such as changes in cell morphology and expression of prolactin, were similarly observed in the three types of eutopic EnSC studied, but not in the ectopic cells upon decidualization. Among the phenotypic markers analysed, CD105 was down-regulated under decidualization in all cell types (mEnSC, P = 0.005; BEnSC, P = 0.029; eBEnSC, P = 0.022) except eEnSC. mEnSC and BEnSC underwent apoptosis during decidualization, whereas eBEnSC and eEnSC were resistant to the induction of cell death. Lastly, migration studies revealed that mEnSC secreted undetermined factors during decidualization that inhibited cell motility, whereas eEnSC showed a significantly lower ability to produce those migration-regulating factors (P < 0.0001, P  < 0.001 and P = 0.0013 for the migration of mEnSC at 24, 48 and 72 h, respectively; P  < 0.0001 for the migration of eEnSC at all times studied). CONCLUSIONS: This study provides novel insights into the differences between endometriotic and eutopic endometrial cells and reinforces the idea that the microenvironment in the ectopic location plays additional roles in the acquisition of the alterations that characterize the cells of the endometriotic foci.

Peri-implantitis is a plaque-associated pathologic condition occurring in tissues around dental implants, clinically characterized by increased peri-implant probing pocket depth and progressive loss of supporting bone. Consequently, to arrest further disease progression and to increase the chance to obtain re-osseointegration, surgical reconstructive procedures have been adopted. In particular, following a paradigm gathered from periodontal therapy, recent protocols have underlined the importance of a minimally invasive approach to optimize the outcomes of therapy while minimizing the risks of postoperative complications. The present review summarizes the level of evidence on the surgical reconstructive protocols focusing on the new approaches aiming to minimize surgical trauma and patients' postoperative discomfort, underlining the pros and cons of each treatment modality.

The organosulfur compound propyl-propane thiosulfonate (PTSO), mainly found in Allium cepa, has a promising use in the agrifood industry. To confirm its safety for livestock, consumers, and environment, toxicological assessment is needed. In this regard, endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are in the spotlight of research. Therefore, as part of the risk assessment of PTSO, in the present work, an in vivo study was performed in mice exposed to PTSO to investigate its potential reproductive toxicity considering fertility, genetic and endocrine endpoints. Five-weeks-old CD1 mice (80 males, 80 females) were exposed for 11 or 16 weeks (males or females, respectively) to different doses of PTSO (0, 14, 28 and 55 mg PTSO/kg b.w./day; 20 animals per group and sex) through the food pellets. No clinical observations or mortality and no changes in absolute organ weights and relative organ weights/body weight or brain ratios occurred during the study. The estrous cycle did not undergo any significant toxicologically relevant change. Most of the sex hormones displayed normal values. Some alterations in the expression of some genes related to reproduction is only observed in females, but they do not appear to have consequences in the development of sex organs. Docking results showed the impossibility of stable binding to estrogen and androgen receptors. Considering all the results obtained, the safe profile of PTSO can be confirmed for different agrifood applications at the conditions assayed.

AIM: To evaluate (1) whether periodontitis has an influence on the prevalence/incidence of respiratory diseases (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease [COPD], asthma, community-acquired pneumonia [CAP], obstructive sleep apnoea [OSA] and COVID-19), and (2) what is the impact of periodontal therapy on the onset or progression of respiratory diseases. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An electronic search was performed on Pubmed, Cochrane Library and Scopus databases up to October 2021, to identify studies answering the PECOS and PICOS questions. RESULTS: Seventy-five articles were selected. Meta-analyses identified statistically significant associations of periodontitis with COPD (nstudies  = 12, odds ratio [OR] = 1.28, 95% confidence interval [CI] [1.16; 1.42], p < .001), and OSA (ns  = 6, OR = 1.65, 95% CI [1.21; 2.25], p = .001), but not for asthma (ns  = 9, OR = 1.53, 95% CI [0.82; 2.86], p = .181). For acute conditions, two studies were found for CAP, while for COVID-19, significant associations were found for the need of assisted ventilation (ns  = 2, OR = 6.24, 95% CI [2.78; 13.99], p < .001) and COVID-related mortality (ns  = 3, OR = 2.26, 95% CI [1.36, 3.77], p = .002). Only four intervention studies were found, showing positive effects of periodontal treatment on COPD, asthma and CAP. CONCLUSIONS: A positive association between periodontitis and COPD, OSA and COVID-19 complications has been found, while there is a lack of intervention studies.

AIM: The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the efficacy of patient-performed or administered adjunctive measures to non-surgical peri-implantitis therapy in terms of probing depth (PD) and/or bleeding on probing (BoP) reductions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Randomized and controlled clinical trials with at least 6 months of follow-up were searched in three databases. Secondary outcomes included implant loss, disease resolution, recurrence of peri-implantitis, need of re-treatment, changes in marginal bone levels, patient-reported outcomes and adverse effects. RESULTS: Of 567 titles, 10 publications, reporting 9 investigations, were included. Three types of adjunctive measures were found (local/systemic antimicrobials and probiotics). Four studies evaluated the effects of local antimicrobials (i.e., minocycline microspheres, chlorhexidine chips or a metronidazole + amoxicillin gel), three studies evaluated systemic antimicrobials (either amoxicillin + metronidazole or metronidazole alone) and two studies evaluated probiotics (Lactobacillus reuteri strains). The addition of local antimicrobials led to modest improvements in PD reduction. Systemic antimicrobials showed significantly greater reductions in PD and BoP, especially at initially deep sites (PD > 6 mm). Due to the large heterogeneity among included studies, no meta-analyses were performed. CONCLUSIONS: Different adjunctive measures in the non-surgical treatment of peri-implantitis have different impact in terms of PD and BoP reductions. Improved PD reductions result after the use of systemic antimicrobials, and to a lesser extent, after the use of local antimicrobials.

RESUMEN

AIM: To explore the implications for dentists and family doctors of the association between periodontal and systemic diseases and the role of dentists and family doctors in managing non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and promoting healthy lifestyles. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The consensus reports of the previous Focused Workshops on the associations between periodontitis and diabetes (2017) and periodontitis and cardiovascular diseases (2019) formed the technical reviews to underpin discussions on both topics. For the association with respiratory diseases, a systematic review was specifically commissioned for the Workshop discussions. Working groups prepared proposals independently, and then the proposals were discussed and approved at plenary meetings. RESULTS: Periodontitis is independently associated with cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), obstructive sleep apnea and COVID-19 complications. Dentists and family doctors should collaborate in managing NCDs, implementing strategies for early detection of periodontitis in primary care centres and of cardiovascular diseases or diabetes in dental settings. Family doctors should be informed about periodontal diseases and their consequences, and oral health professionals (OHPs) should be informed about the relevance of NCDs and the associated risk factors. CONCLUSIONS: Closer collaboration between OHPs and family doctors is important in the early detection and management of NCDs and in promoting healthy lifestyles. Pathways for early case detection of periodontitis in family medicine practices and of NCDs in dental practices should be developed and evaluated.

The aim of the present work was the selection of aromatic plant essential oils (EOs) and/or ethanolic extracts (EEs) to prevent the late blowing defect (LBD) of cheese caused by Clostridium spp. EEs resulted more effective than EOs to inhibit dairy-borne Clostridium spp. in vitro. Savory, hyssop, lavender and tarragon EEs, which showed the lowest minimal inhibitory concentration against Clostridium tyrobutyricum, were selected to study the prevention of LBD caused by this bacterium in cheese. Addition of savory and lavender EEs to cheese milk delayed LBD by 2 weeks, but at the end of ripening these cheeses showed similar clostridial vegetative cells counts, spoilage symptoms and propionic, and butyric acids levels than blown control cheese. Tarragon EE, with the highest content in caffeic acid, also delayed LBD by 2 weeks, but it was more effective to inhibit Clostridium, since cheese with tarragon EE showed minor LBD symptoms, lower vegetative cells count and lower concentrations of propionic and butyric acids than the rest of cheeses made with EEs. This fact could be also attributable to the greater number of antimicrobial terpenes (1,8-cineole, 4-terpineol, α-terpineol, isoelemicin, methyl eugenol, and methyl trans-isoeugenol) detected in this cheese. This is the first report on the application of EEs to control C. tyrobutyricum in cheese.

Ly108 (SLAMF6) is a homophilic cell surface molecule that binds SLAM-associated protein (SAP), an intracellular adapter protein that modulates humoral immune responses. Furthermore, Ly108 is crucial for the development of natural killer T (NKT) cells and CTL cytotoxicity. Significant attention has been paid towards expression and function of Ly108 since multiple isoforms were identified, i.e., Ly108-1, Ly108-2, Ly108-3, and Ly108-H1, some of which are differentially expressed in several mouse strains. Surprisingly, Ly108-H1 appeared to protect against disease in a congenic mouse model of Lupus. Here, we use cell lines to further define Ly108-H1 function in comparison with other isoforms. We show that Ly108-H1 inhibits IL-2 production while having little effect upon cell death. With a refined method, we could detect phosphorylation of Ly108-H1 and show that SAP binding is retained. We propose that Ly108-H1 may regulate signaling at two levels by retaining the capability to bind its extracellular as well as intracellular ligands, possibly inhibiting downstream pathways. In addition, we detected Ly108-3 in primary cells and show that this isoform is also differentially expressed between mouse strains. The presence of additional binding motifs and a non-synonymous SNP in Ly108-3 further extends the diversity between murine strains. This work highlights the importance of isoform awareness, as inherent homology can present a challenge when interpreting mRNA and protein expression data, especially as alternatively splicing potentially affects function.

Synsepalum dulcificum (Richardella dulcifica) is a berry fruit from West Africa with the ability to convert the sour taste into a sweet taste, and for this reason, the fruit is also known as the "miracle berry" (MB). The red and bright berry is rich in terpenoids. The fruit's pulp and skin contain mainly phenolic compounds and flavonoids, which correlate with their antioxidant activity. Different polar extracts have been described to inhibit cell proliferation and transformation of cancer cell lines in vitro. In addition, MB has been shown to ameliorate insulin resistance in a preclinical model of diabetes induced by a chow diet enriched in fructose. Herein, we have compared the biological activities of three supercritical extracts obtained from the seed-a subproduct of the fruit-and one supercritical extract obtained from the pulp and the skin of MB. The four extracts have been characterized in terms of total polyphenols content. Moreover, the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, hypo-lipidemic, and inhibition of colorectal cancer cell bioenergetics have been compared. Non-polar supercritical extracts from the seed are the ones with the highest effects on the inhibition of bioenergetic of colorectal (CRC) cancer cells. At the molecular level, the effects on cell bioenergetics seems to be related to the inhibition of main drivers of the de novo lipogenesis, such as the sterol regulatory element binding transcription factor (SREBF1) and downstream molecular targets fatty acid synthase (FASN) and stearoyl coenzyme desaturase 1 (SCD1). As metabolic reprograming is considered as one of the hallmarks of cancer, natural extracts from plants may provide complementary approaches in the treatment of cancer. Herein, for the first time, supercritical extracts from MB have been obtained, where the seed, a by-product of the fruit, seems to be rich in antitumor bioactive compounds. Based on these results, supercritical extracts from the seed merit further research to be proposed as co-adjuvants in the treatment of cancer.

With the spring-block model proposed by Olami, Feder, and Christensen (OFC), we obtained a time series of synthetic earthquakes with different values of the conservation level (ß), which measures the fraction of the energy that a relaxing block passes to its neighbors. The time series have multifractal characteristics, and we analyzed them with the Chhabra and Jensen method. We calculated the width, symmetry, and curvature parameters for each spectrum. As the value of conservation level increases, the spectra widen, the symmetric parameter increases, and the curvature around the maximum of the spectra decreases. In a long series of synthetic seismicity, we located earthquakes of the greatest magnitude and built overlapping windows before and after them. For the time series in each window, we performed multifractal analysis to obtain multifractal spectra. We also calculated the width, symmetry, and curvature around the maximum of the multifractal spectrum. We followed the evolution of these parameters before and after large earthquakes. We found that the multifractal spectra had greater widths, were less skewed to the left, and were very pointed around the maximum before rather than after large earthquakes. We studied and calculated the same parameters and found the same results in the analysis of the Southern California seismicity catalog. This suggests that there seems to be a process of preparation for a great earthquake and that its dynamics are different from the one that occurs after this mainshock based on the behavior of the parameters mentioned before.

The Olami, Feder and Christensen (OFC) spring-block model has proven to be a powerful tool for analyzing and comparing synthetic and real earthquakes. This work proposes the possible reproduction of Utsu's law for earthquakes in the OFC model. Based on our previous works, several simulations characterizing real seismic regions were performed. We located the maximum earthquake in these regions and applied Utsu's formulae to identify a possible aftershock area and made comparisons between synthetic and real earthquakes. The research compares several equations to calculate the aftershock area and proposes a new one with the available data. Subsequently, the team performed new simulations and chose a mainshock to analyze the behavior of the surrounding events, so as to identify whether they could be catalogued as aftershocks and relate them to the aftershock area previously determined using the formula proposed. Additionally, the spatial location of those events was considered in order to classify them as aftershocks. Finally, we plot the epicenters of the mainshock, and the possible aftershocks comprised in the calculated area resembling the original work of Utsu. Having analyzed the results, it is likely to say that Utsu's law is reproducible using a spring-block model with a self-organized criticality (SOC) model.

Adipose tissue and liver metabolism play a key role in maintaining body homeostasis; therefore, their impairment conduces a pathological state. Nowadays, occidental lifestyle is a common etiological issue among a variety of chronic diseases, while diet is a unique strategy to prevent obesity and liver metabolism impairment and is a powerful player in the treatment of metabolic-related diseases. Mesoamerican foods are rich in bioactive molecules that enhance and improve adipose tissue and liver performance and represent a prophylactic and therapeutic alternative for disorders related to the loss of homeostasis in the metabolism of these two important tissues.
