RESUMEN

Ferroelectric BaTiO3 became a multifunctional material via doping of lanthanide ions (0.3 mol% Er(3+)/3.0 mol% Yb(3+)) and subsequently upconversion luminescence was enhanced by incorporation of Zn(2+) ions. Upconversion luminescence of BaTiO3:Er(3+)/Yb(3+) perovskite nanophosphor has been studied using 800 and 980 nm laser excitations. The emission dynamics is studied with respect to its dependence on input power and external temperature including lifetime. Based on time-resolved spectroscopy, it is inferred that two types of Er(3+) sites are present in the barium titanate lattice. The first one is a short lived component (minor species) present at 6-coordinated Ti-sites of low symmetry while the second one is a long lived component (major species), present at 12-coordinated Ba-sites with high symmetry. The influence of the introduction of Zn(2+) ions on the lifetime of (4)S3/2 and (4)F9/2 levels of Er(3+) ions is also investigated. Enhanced temperature sensing performance (120 K to 505 K) of the material is observed using the fluorescence intensity ratio technique, employing the emission from the thermally coupled, (2)H11/2 and (4)S3/2 energy levels of Er(3+) ions. The defect luminescence of the material is also found to increase upon Zn-doping.

The interest in the effect of microplastics (MPs) on the terrestrial environment has been increasing recently. Different species of earthworms have been used to study the effects of MPs on different aspects of earthworm health. However, there is still a need for more studies because different studies report different effects on earthworms depending on the properties (e.g., types, shapes, sizes) of MPs in the environment and exposure conditions (e.g., exposure period). This study used Eisenia fetida as a test earthworm species to investigate the effect of different concentrations of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) MPs (≤125 µm) in soil on the growth and reproduction of earthworms. The exposure of the earthworms to the different concentrations of LDPE MPs (0-3% w/w) for 14 d and 28 d neither caused death of the earthworms nor showed significant effects on the earthworm weights in this study. The number of cocoons produced by the exposed earthworms were also similar to that of the controls (i.e., no exposure to MPs). Some previous studies reported similar results to what have been observed in this study, while some studies reported different results. On the other hand, the number of ingested MPs by the earthworms increased with increasing MPs concentrations in soil, suggesting a potential for damage to digestive tract. Also, the earthworm skin surface was damaged after exposure to MPs. The ingested MPs and the skin surface damage suggest that there is a potential for adverse effects on the earthworm growth after a longer-term exposure. Overall, the results of this study show that the effects of MPs on earthworms need to be studied using various endpoints including growth, reproduction, ingestion, and skin damage and such effects can be different depending on the exposure conditions such as MPs concentration and exposure period.

Immunocompromised patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection are prone to multiple infections, of which parasitic infections are an important cause. Parasitic protozoal infections - both by common and rare protozoa are documented in such patients. Here, we report a rare and interesting case of five protozoal infections affecting a single HIV-infected person at the same time of initial presentation. A 64-years-male came to us with complaints of chronic diarrhea for 6 months. He was investigated and found to be positive for HIV I. His stool examination revealed cysts of Entameba histolytica and Giardia lamblia and oocysts of Cryptosporidium species and Cystoisospora species. His toxoplasma IgG was also positive in high titer. The patient was medically diagnosed and was treated with medications as clinically prescribed - antiretroviral therapy was initiated and he was discharged in due course. A total of five protozoal infections were documented affecting a single person - newly diagnosed immunocompromised male, which by sheer qualitative count of patient case histories, indeed is a rare case reported in the medical literature.

Enterobius vermicularis, also known as pinworm or threadworm, is a large intestinal nematode which has a high prevalence among children and peripubertal age in our country. Transmission usually occurs by autoinfection like finger contamination of the embryonated eggs deposited by the gravid female worm on the perianal and perineal region. Globally, only a few reports are there regarding the isolation of the parasite from extra-intestinal sites. These are two rare case reports of ocular enterobiasis. The first case was a middle-aged female and the second one was a 14-year-old girl, both of whom were referred from other tertiary care hospitals to Calcutta School of Tropical Medicine and who presented with discharge of live motile worms from their eyes (conjunctiva). In both the cases, identification was done by saline wet mount and direct microscopy of a gravid female worm. Plano-convex embryonated eggs were also observed. The oval embryonated eggs, plano-convex in shape, and the gravid female, with its cervical alae near the anterior end and straight thin pointed tail, were identified under the microscope. Although E. vermicularis is a very common large intestinal parasitic infestation of children and adolescents, it can also rarely be isolated from unusual sites, which should be taken into account for effective diagnosis and treatment.
