OBJECTIVES: Decreasing fertility implies considerable public health, societal, political, and international consequences. Induced abortion (IA) and the recent COVID-19 pandemic can be contributing factors to it but these have not been adequately studied so far. The purpose of this paper is to explore the relation of IA incidence and the COVID-19 pandemic to declining rates of delivery, as per our Sardinian experience. METHODS: We analyzed the registered data from the official Italian statistics surveys of deliveries and IA in the last 10 years from 2011 to 2020 in Sardinia. RESULTS: A total of 106,557 deliveries occurred and a progressive decrease in the birth rate has been observed. A total of 18,250 IA occurred and a progressive decline has been observed here as well. The ratio between IA and deliveries remained constant over the decade. Between 2011 and 2019 a variation of -4.32% was observed for IA while in the last year, during the COVID-19 pandemic the decrease of the procedures was equal to -12.30%. For the deliveries, a mean variation of the -4.8% was observed between the 2011 and the 2019 while in the last year, during the COVID-19 pandemic the decrease was about -9%. Considering the about 30% reduction of live births between 2011 and 2020, there is an almost proportional reduction in IA. CONCLUSIONS: Public policy responses to decreasing fertility, especially pronatalist ones, would be provided with evidence base about trends in delivery and IA and women's decision making.

RESUMEN

Thalassemias are among the most frequent genetic disorders worldwide. They are an important social and economic strain in high-risk populations. The benefit of ß-thalassemia screening programs is growing evident but the capacity to diagnose fetal ß-thalassemia exceeds the treatment possibilities and even when treatment before birth becomes feasible, difficult decisions about the relative risks will remain. This paper can be of practical and ethically justified aid when counseling women about screening, diagnosis, and treatment of ß-thalassemia. It takes in consideration various social challenges, medical issues such as antenatal screening, preimplantation genetic diagnosis, prenatal diagnosis, non-invasive prenatal testing and prenatal therapy. We also describe the Sardinian experience in applying and promoting high-risk population screening and diagnosis programs and future trends in the management of ß-thalassemia.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is considered a synucleinopathy because of the intraneuronal accumulation of aggregated α-synuclein (αSyn). Recent evidence points to soluble αSyn-oligomers (αSynO) as the main cytotoxic species responsible for cell death. Given the pivotal role of αSyn in PD, αSyn-based models are crucial for the investigation of toxic mechanisms and the identification of new therapeutic targets in PD. By using a metabolomics approach, we evaluated the metabolic profile of brain and serum samples of rats infused unilaterally with preformed human αSynOs (HαSynOs), or vehicle, into the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc). Three months postinfusion, the striatum was dissected for striatal dopamine (DA) measurements via High Pressure Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) analysis and mesencephalon and serum samples were collected for the evaluation of metabolite content via gas chromatography mass spectrometry analysis. Multivariate, univariate and correlation statistics were applied. A 40% decrease of DA content was measured in the HαSynO-infused striatum as compared to the contralateral and the vehicle-infused striata. Decreased levels of dehydroascorbic acid, myo-inositol, and glycine, and increased levels of threonine, were found in the mesencephalon, while increased contents of fructose and mannose, and a decrease in glycine and urea, were found in the serum of HαSynO-infused rats. The significant correlation between DA and metabolite content indicated that metabolic variations reflected the nigrostriatal degeneration. Collectively, the metabolomic fingerprint of HαSynO-infused rats points to an increase of oxidative stress markers, in line with PD neuropathology, and provides hints for potential biomarkers of PD.

OBJECTIVE: Placenta-related biological samples are used in biomedical research to investigate placental development. Metabolomics represents a promising approach for studying placental metabolism in an effort to explain physiological and pathological mechanisms. The aim of this study was to investigate metabolic changes in chorionic villi during the first trimester of pregnancy in euploid and aneuploid cases. METHODS: Samples from 21 women (13 euploid and eight aneuploid) were analyzed with 1 H-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Multivariate statistical analysis was performed, and differences in metabolites were used to identify the altered metabolic pathways. RESULTS: A regression model to test the correlation between fetal crown-rump length (CRL) and metabolic profile of chorionic villi was performed in euploid pregnancies (R2 was 0.69 for the NMR analysis and 0.94 for the GC-MS analysis). Supervised analysis was used to compare chorionic villi of euploid and aneuploid fetuses (NMR: R2 X = 0.70, R2 Y = 0.65, Q2  = 0.30, R2 X = 0.62; GC-MS: R2 Y = 0.704, Q2  = 0.444). Polyol pathways, myo-inositol, and oxidative stress seem to have a fundamental role in euploid and aneuploid pregnancies. CONCLUSION: Polyol pathways may have a crucial role in energy production in early pregnancy. Excessive activation in aneuploid pregnancies may lead to increased oxidative stress. Metabolomics represents a promising approach to investigate placental metabolic changes.

Background In prenatal diagnosis, a thickened nuchal translucency (NT) is one of the most sensitive and specific markers for several defects but it may also be found in 5% of healthy fetuses. The pathophysiological causes that lead to an increase in NT are not yet fully understood. Metabolomics represents a new promising approach, useful for studying different metabolites in biological organisms in response to environmental stressors. The aim of our study was to investigate the metabolomic profile of the amniotic fluid samples (AFS) of euploid fetuses with enlarged nuchal translucency (ENT) compared to a control group (C group). Methods This study was carried out on a group of women who underwent second-trimester amniocentesis for advanced maternal age (C group) or for NT ≥95th percentile (ENT group) found during first-trimester aneuploidy screening. AFS were analyzed with proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and subsequent multivariate and univariate statistical analyses were conducted, followed by pathway analysis. Results In total, 67 AFS from the C group and 23 from the ENT group were analyzed. Partial least square discriminate analysis was carried out (R2X=0.784, R2Y=0.658, Q2=0.622, P<0.0001). A different metabolic profile was observed in the ENT group compared with the C group, suggesting an energetic shift to a glycolytic phenotype in an oxidative environment in the ENT group compared to the C group. Conclusion Metabolomic studies enable the identification of metabolic alterations occurring in fetuses with ENT. These findings may provide a new basis for better understanding the pathophysiological mechanisms in this prenatal phenomenon.

Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), is characterized by a heterogeneous group of cells, including cancer stem cells (CSCs), crucially involved in tumor initiation, progression and recurrence. CSCs appear to have a distinct metabolic phenotype, compared to non-stem cancer cells. How they adapt their metabolism to the cancer process is still unclear, and no data are yet available for PTC. We recently isolated thyrospheres, containing cancer stem-like cells, from B-CPAP and TPC-1 cell lines derived from PTC of the BRAF-like expression profile class, and stem-like cells from Nthy-ori3-1 normal thyreocyte-derived cell line. In the present study, gas chromatography/mass spectrometry metabolomic profiles of cancer thyrospheres were compared to cancer parental adherent cells and to non cancer thyrospheres profiles. A statistically significant decrease of glycolytic pathway metabolites and variations in Krebs cycle metabolites was found in thyrospheres versus parental cells. Moreover, cancer stem-like cells showed statistically significant differences in Krebs cycle intermediates, amino acids, cholesterol, and fatty acids content, compared to non-cancer stem-like cells. For the first time, data are reported on the metabolic profile of PTC cancer stem-like cells and confirm that changes in metabolic pathways can be explored as new biomarkers and targets for therapy in this tumor.

In this feasibility study, we propose, for the first time, (1)H NMR spectroscopy coupled with mathematical strategies as a valid tool for body fluid (BF) trace identification in forensic science. In order to assess the ability of this approach to identify traces composed either by a single or by two different BFs, samples of blood, urine, saliva, and semen were collected from different donors, and binary mixtures were prepared. (1)H NMR analyses were carried out for all samples. Spectral data of the whole set were firstly submitted to unsupervised principal component analysis (PCA); it showed that samples of the same BF cluster well on the basis of their characterizing molecular components and that mixtures exhibit intermediate characteristics among BF typologies. Furthermore, samples were divided into a training set and a test set. An average NMR spectral profile for each typology of BF was obtained from the training set and validated as representative of each BF class. Finally, a fitting procedure, based on a system of linear equations with the four obtained average spectral profiles, was applied to the test set and the mixture samples; it showed that BFs can be unambiguously identified, even as components of a mixture. The successful use of this mathematical procedure has the advantage, in forensics, of overcoming bias due to the analyst's personal judgment. We therefore propose this combined approach as a valid, fast, and non-destructive tool for addressing the challenges in the identification of composite traces in forensics.

RESUMEN

From the perspective of precision medicine, the challenge for the future is to improve the accuracy of diagnosis, prognosis, and prediction of therapeutic responses through the identification of biomarkers. In this framework, the omics sciences (genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics) and their combined use represent innovative approaches for the exploration of the complexity and heterogeneity of multiple sclerosis (MS). This review examines the evidence currently available on the application of omics sciences to MS, analyses the methods, their limitations, the samples used, and their characteristics, with a particular focus on biomarkers associated with the disease state, exposure to disease-modifying treatments (DMTs), and drug efficacies and safety profiles.

Background: Recent evidence has shown a significant association between menopause and multiple sclerosis (MS) progression. This study investigated the possible role of menopause in influencing MS from clinical and neuroradiological perspectives. Notably, the possible association between menopause and brain atrophy has been evaluated. Materials and methods: This study included women with MS whose ages ranged from 45 to 55 years. Demographic and clinical characteristics were collected, and the reproductive phase was defined as non-menopausal or menopausal based on the final menstrual period. Thus, MS activity over the past year was reported as the annualised relapse rate (ARR), and MRI activity (defined as new T2 lesions and/or the presence of gadolinium-enhancing lesions at the last MRI assessment in comparison with the MRI performed within the previous 12 months) were compared between non-menopausal women (non-MW) and menopausal women (MW). Volume measurements of the whole brain (WB), white matter (WM), grey matter (GM), and cortical GM were estimated using the SIENAX software, and the possible relationship with menopausal status was assessed by regression analysis. Results: The study included 147 women with MS. Eighty-four (57.1%) were MW, with a mean age of 48.5 ± 4.3 years at menopause onset and a mean duration of menopause of 4.1 ± 1.1 years. When compared for ARR, MW reported a lower rate than the non-MW (ARR of 0.29 ± 0.4 vs. 0.52 ± 0.5; p < 0.01). MRI activity was observed in 13.1% of MW and 20.6% of non-MW (p = 0.03). Lower cortical GM volumes (578.1 ± 40.4 mL in MW vs. 596.9 ± 35.8 mL in non-MW; p < 0.01) have also been reported. Finally, multivariate analysis showed a significant association of lower ARR (p = 0.001) and cortical GM volume (p = 0.002) with menopausal status after correction for chronological age and other variables. Discussion: Menopause may be an adverse prognostic factor of MS. Our preliminary results suggest that menopause may facilitate cortical GM atrophy, probably due to a decline in the neuroprotective effects of estrogen, with negative effects on MS evolution.

BACKGROUND: Endometriosis affects women of reproductive age, and its pathogenesis is still unclear. Typically, it overlaps other similar medical and surgical conditions, determining a delay in early diagnosis. Metabolomics allows studying metabolic changes in different physiological or pathological states to discover new potential biomarkers. We used the gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC-MS) to explore metabolic alterations in endometriosis to better understand its pathophysiology and find new biomarkers. METHODS: Twenty-two serum samples of patients with symptomatic endometriosis and ten without it were collected and subjected to GC-MS analysis. Multivariate and univariate statistical analyses were performed, followed by pathway analysis. RESULTS: Partial least squares discriminant analysis was performed to determine the differences between the two groups (p = 0.003). Threonic acid, 3-hydroxybutyric acid, and proline increased significantly in endometriosis patients, while alanine and valine decreased. ROC curves were built to test the diagnostic power of metabolites. The pathway analysis identified the synthesis and degradation of ketone bodies and the biosynthesis of phenylalanine, tyrosine, and tryptophan as the most altered pathways. CONCLUSIONS: The metabolomic approach identifies metabolic alterations in women with endometriosis. These findings may improve our understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms of disease and the discovery of new biomarkers.

Current treatment for Multiple Sclerosis (MS) consists of a multidisciplinary approach including disease-modifying therapies. The response to treatment is heterogeneous, representing a crucial challenge in the classification of patients. Metabolomics is an innovative tool that can identifies biomarkers/predictors of treatment response. We aimed to evaluate plasma metabolic changes in a group of naïve Relapsing-Remitting MS patients starting Fingolimod treatment, to find specific metabolomic features that predict the therapeutic response as well as the possible side effects. The study included 42 Relapsing-Remitting MS blood samples, of which 30 were classified as responders after two years of FINGO treatment, whereas 12 patients were Not-Responders. For fifteen patients, samples were collected at four time points: before starting the therapy; at six months after the initiation; at twelve months after; and at twenty-four months after initiation. The serum was analysed through Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and multivariate and univariate statistical analysis. Considering the single comparison between each time point, it was possible to identify a set of metabolites changing their concentrations based on the drug intake. FINGO influences aminoacidic and energy metabolisms and reduces oxidative stress and the activity of the immune system, both typical features of MS.

Cancer cells adjust their metabolism to meet energy demands. In particular, glutamine addiction represents a distinctive feature of several types of tumors, including colorectal cancer. In this study, four colorectal cancer cell lines (Caco-2, HCT116, HT29 and SW480) were cultured with or without glutamine. The growth and proliferation rate, colony-forming capacity, apoptosis, cell cycle, redox homeostasis and metabolomic analysis were evaluated by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide test (MTT), flow cytometry, high-performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry techniques. The results show that glutamine represents an important metabolite for cell growth and that its deprivation reduces the proliferation of colorectal cancer cells. Glutamine depletion induces cell death and cell cycle arrest in the GO/G1 phase by modulating energy metabolism, the amino acid content and antioxidant defenses. Moreover, the combined glutamine starvation with the glycolysis inhibitor 2-deoxy-D-glucose exerted a stronger cytotoxic effect. This study offers a strong rationale for targeting glutamine metabolism alone or in combination with glucose metabolism to achieve a therapeutic benefit in the treatment of colon cancer.

Microbial secondary infections can contribute to an increase in the risk of mortality in COVID-19 patients, particularly in case of severe diseases. In this study, we collected and evaluated the clinical, laboratory and microbiological data of COVID-19 critical ill patients requiring intensive care (ICU) to evaluate the significance and the prognostic value of these parameters. One hundred seventy-eight ICU patients with severe COVID-19, hospitalized at the S. Francesco Hospital of Nuoro (Italy) in the period from March 2020 to May 2021, were enrolled in this study. Clinical data and microbiological results were collected. Blood chemistry parameters, relative to three different time points, were analyzed through multivariate and univariate statistical approaches. Seventy-four percent of the ICU COVID-19 patients had a negative outcome, while 26% had a favorable prognosis. A correlation between the laboratory parameters and days of hospitalization of the patients was observed with significant differences between the two groups. Moreover, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Candida spp, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Klebsiella pneumoniae were the most frequently isolated microorganisms from all clinical specimens. Secondary infections play an important role in the clinical outcome. The analysis of the blood chemistry tests was found useful in monitoring the progression of COVID-19.

INTRODUCTION: Pregnancy represents an important event for women with multiple sclerosis (MS) and is often accompanied by post-partum disease reactivation. To date, the influence of this reproductive phase on long-term MS outcomes is still largely unexplored. The objective of the study was characterise a large real-world cohort of women with MS to evaluate the effects of pregnancy and breastfeeding on short- and long-term clinical and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) outcomes while exploring the relationships with MRI measurements of brain atrophy. METHODS: MS patients with and without pregnancy were recruited. Clinical relapses and MRI activity of the year before conception versus the year after delivery were evaluated. Regression models were performed to investigate the relationships between long-term MS outcomes (EDSS score and MRI brain measurements obtained by SIENAX software) and pregnancy and breastfeeding duration. RESULTS: Two hundred ten women with MS were enrolled; of them, 129 (61.4%) had at least one pregnancy. Of all pregnancies (n = 212), those that occurred after MS onset (90 [42.4%]) were examined to evaluate the short-term outcomes. A higher annualised relapse rate in the post-partum year versus the pre-conception year (0.54 ± 0.84 vs. 0.45 ± 0.71; p = 0.04) was observed. A regression analysis showed that clinical activity after delivery was associated with clinical activity of the year before conception (p = 0.001) as well as duration of breastfeeding (p = 0.022). Similarly, post-partum MRI activity was associated with pre-conception MRI activity (p = 0.026) and shorter breastfeeding duration (p = 0.013). Regarding long-term outcomes, having had at least one pregnancy during MS was associated with a lower EDSS score (p = 0.021), while no relationships were reported with MRI measurements. Conversely, a breastfeeding duration > 6 months was associated with lower white matter volume (p = 0.008). CONCLUSIONS: Our study underlines the importance of considering the effects of pregnancy and breastfeeding on short- and long-term MS outcomes. In the current therapeutic landscape, pregnancy planning and treatment optimisation in the post-partum period, in particular for women who choose to breastfeed, are fundamental for the management of these biological phases so central in a woman's life.

BACKGROUND: A variety of autoimmune diseases, including MS, amplify sex-based physiological differences in immunological responsiveness. Female MS patients experience pathophysiological changes during reproductive phases (pregnancy and menopause). Sex hormones can act on immune cells, potentially enabling them to modify MS risk, activity, and progression, and to play a role in treatment. METHODS: Scientific papers (published between 1998 and 2021) were selected through PubMed, Google Scholar, and Web of Science literature repositories. The search was limited to publications analyzing the hormonal profile of male and female MS patients during different life phases, in particular focusing on sex hormone treatment. RESULTS: Both men and women with MS have lower testosterone levels compared to healthy controls. The levels of estrogens and progesterone increase during pregnancy and then rapidly decrease after delivery, possibly mediating an immune-stabilizing process. The literature examined herein evidences the neuroprotective effect of testosterone and estrogens in MS, supporting further examinations of their potential therapeutic uses. CONCLUSIONS: A correlation has been identified between sex hormones and MS clinical activity. The combination of disease-modifying therapies with estrogen or estrogen plus a progestin receptor modulator promoting myelin repair might represent an important strategy for MS treatment in the future.

We recently described a unique plasma metabolite profile in subjects with pediatric acute-onset neuropsychiatric syndrome (PANS), suggesting pathogenic models involving specific patterns of neurotransmission, neuroinflammation, and oxidative stress. Here, we extend the analysis to a group of patients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), as a consensus has recently emerged around its immune-mediated pathophysiology with a widespread involvement of brain networks. This observational case-control study enrolled patients referred for PANS and ASD from June 2019 to May 2020, as well as neurotypical age and gender-matched control subjects. Thirty-four PANS outpatients, fifteen ASD outpatients, and twenty-five neurotypical subjects underwent physical and neuropsychiatric evaluations, alongside serum metabolomic analysis with 1H-NMR. In supervised models, the metabolomic profile of ASD was significantly different from controls (p = 0.0001), with skewed concentrations of asparagine, aspartate, betaine, glycine, lactate, glucose, and pyruvate. Metabolomic separation was also observed between PANS and ASD subjects (p = 0.02), with differences in the concentrations of arginine, aspartate, betaine, choline, creatine phosphate, glycine, pyruvate, and tryptophan. We confirmed a unique serum metabolomic profile of PANS compared with both ASD and neurotypical subjects, distinguishing PANS as a pathophysiological entity per se. Tryptophan and glycine appear as neuroinflammatory fingerprints of PANS and ASD, respectively. In particular, a reduction in glycine would primarily affect NMDA-R excitatory tone, overall impairing downstream glutamatergic, dopaminergic, and GABAergic transmissions. Nonetheless, we found metabolomic similarities between PANS and ASD that suggest a putative role of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDA-R) dysfunction in both disorders. Metabolomics-based approaches could contribute to the identification of novel ASD and PANS biomarkers.

Pregnancy is a complicated and insidious state with various aspects to consider, including the well-being of the mother and child. Developing better non-invasive tests that cover a broader range of disorders with lower false-positive rates is a fundamental necessity in the prenatal medicine field, and, in this sense, the application of metabolomics could be extremely useful. Metabolomics measures and analyses the products of cellular biochemistry. As a biomarker discovery tool, the integrated holistic approach of metabolomics can yield new diagnostic or therapeutic approaches. In this review, we identify and summarize prenatal metabolomics studies and identify themes and controversies. We conducted a comprehensive search of PubMed and Google Scholar for all publications through January 2020 using combinations of the following keywords: nuclear magnetic resonance, mass spectrometry, metabolic profiling, prenatal diagnosis, pregnancy, chromosomal or aneuploidy, pre-eclampsia, fetal growth restriction, pre-term labor, and congenital defect. Metabolite detection with high throughput systems aided by advanced bioinformatics and network analysis allowed for the identification of new potential prenatal biomarkers and therapeutic targets. We took into consideration the scientific papers issued between the years 2000-2020, thus observing that the larger number of them were mainly published in the last 10 years. Initial small metabolomics studies in perinatology suggest that previously unidentified biochemical pathways and predictive biomarkers may be clinically useful. Although the scientific community is considering metabolomics with increasing attention for the study of prenatal medicine as well, more in-depth studies would be useful in order to advance toward the clinic world as the obtained results appear to be still preliminary. Employing metabolomics approaches to understand fetal and perinatal pathophysiology requires further research with larger sample sizes and rigorous testing of pilot studies using various omics and traditional hypothesis-driven experimental approaches.

Persistence of a fetal thickened nuchal translucency (NT), one of the most sensitive and specific individual markers of fetal disorders, is strongly correlated with the possibility of a genetic syndrome, congenital infections, or other malformations. Thickened NT can also be found in normal pregnancies. Several of its pathophysiological aspects still remain unexplained. Metabolomics could offer a fresh opportunity to explore maternal-foetal metabolism in an effort to explain its physiological and pathological mechanisms. For this prospective case-control pilot study, thirty-nine samples of amniotic fluids were collected, divisible into 12 euploid foetuses with an enlarged nuchal translucency (>NT) and 27 controls (C). Samples were analyzed using gas chromatography mass spectrometry. Multivariate and univariate statistical analyses were performed to find a specific metabolic pattern of >NT class. The correlation between the metabolic profile and clinical parameters was evaluated (NT showed an R2 = 0.75, foetal crown-rump length showed R2 = 0.65, pregnancy associated plasma protein-A showed R2 = 0.60). Nine metabolites significantly differing between >NT foetuses and C were detected: 2-hydroxybutyric acid, 3-hydroxybutyric, 1,5 Anydro-Sorbitol, cholesterol, erythronic acid, fructose, malic acid, threitol, and threonine, which were linked to altered pathways involved in altered energetic pathways. Through the metabolomics approach, it was possible to identify a specific metabolic fingerprint of the fetuses with >NT.

Endometriosis is a common disease affecting women in reproductive age. There are several hypotheses on the pathogenesis of this disease. Often, its lesions and symptoms overlap with those of many other medical and surgical conditions, causing a delay in diagnosis. Metabolomics represents a useful diagnostic tool for the study of metabolic changes during a different physiological or pathological status. We used 1H-NMR to explore metabolic alteration in a cohort of patients with endometriosis in order to contribute to a better understanding of the pathophysiology of the disease and to suggest new useful biomarkers. Thirty-seven patients were recruited for the metabolomic analysis: 22 patients affected by symptomatic endometriosis and 15 not affected by it. Their serum samples were collected and analyzed with 1H-NMR. Multivariate statistical analysis was conducted, followed by univariate and pathway analyses. Partial Least Square Discriminant Analysis (PLS-DA) was performed to determine the presence of any differences between the non-endometriosis and endometriosis samples (R2X = 0.596, R2Y = 0.713, Q2 = 0.635, and p < 0.0001). ß-hydroxybutyric acid and glutamine were significantly increased, whereas tryptophan was significantly decreased in the endometriosis patients. ROC curves were built to test the diagnostic power of the metabolites (ß-hydroxybutyric acid: AUC = 0.85 CI = 0.71-0.99; glutamine: AUC = 0.83 CI = 0.68-0.98; tryptophan: AUC = 0.75 CI = 0.54-0.95; ß-hydroxybutyric acid + glutamine + tryptophan AUC = 0.92 CI = 0.81-1). The metabolomic approach enabled the identification of several metabolic alterations occurring in women with endometriosis. These findings may provide new bases for a better understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms of the disease and for the discovery of new biomarkers. Trial registration number NCT02337816.
