RESUMEN
Hydatidosis is a usually asymptomatic chronic disease. In most patients who undergo surgery, hydatidosis is not resolved due to high recurrence rate. However, long-term treatment with albendazole has been found to have a significant efficacy that has been further improved when albendazole is combined with praziquantel and fat-rich diet. In this study a retrospective evaluation of the outcome of hydatidosis in 70 patients, was performed. In group A, a combined chemotherapy of albendazole plus praziquantel was given after surgical removal of cysts. In group B chemotherapy alone was administered without surgery. Sera of all patients were assayed for IgG, IgM, IgA and IgE antibodies by ELISA. In addition, ultrasonography (US) and/or computerized tomography (CT) scans were performed every 3 months for 18 months, and then, each year until the end of follow-up. The difference between the two kinds of treatment used in the present study was found to be not significant, nor was the difference of the shrinkage and extended calcification of the HCs between the two groups. However, the difference of the shrinkage of the HCs of more than 80%, as well as the extended calcifications of the cysts between the two groups were found to be statistically significant. In all patients high levels of IgG and IgA were detected, while IgE in group A and/or IgM in group B were marginally detected above the background level throughout the study. Level of IgG was strongly fluctuated and significantly decreased at 11.7 years after the end of chemotherapy, or at 8.5 years after relapses in group A, while was dramatically decreased at 3.6 years after the termination of chemotherapy in group B. Relapses occurred in 11.4% of patients within the first six months after end of chemotherapy. After additional chemotherapy with albendazole for 3-6 months, all of them were considered cured at 8.5 years of follow up.

Gastrointestinal metastases of breast cancer are a rare occurrence. It is even rarer to be the first manifestation of an unknown breast cancer. We present 2 cases of metastatic breast cancer of the lobular type to the stomach and large bowel in 2 women, initially considered as primary disease. The establishment of diagnosis required experienced histopathologic and immunohistochemical examination. The management follows the principles of the primary disease. Surgery is spared for complications. Mean survival is one year. Prognosis is better for patients with positive hormonal receptors.

We present a case of non-functioning malignant paraganglioma of the abdomen with cervical lymph node metastases. At laparotomy the tumor was considered unresectable. The patient received palliative radiation therapy and died 3 months later from disseminated disease. We discuss the diagnostic approach and the therapeutic options.

Duplication of the pylorus, an extremely rare congenital anomaly of the stomach, consists of two openings connecting the antrum of the stomach to the duodenal bulb. Approximately 70 cases of double pylorus have been described in the literature, most of which are associated with the presence of chronic peptic ulcers, thus indicating an acquired origin of the condition. We report a case of congenital double pylorus in a 64-year-old man who complained about mild postprandial epigastric discomfort and nausea of approximately 3 months' duration. Endoscopic examination of the stomach showed a double pyloric ostium connecting the stomach to the duodenum. No signs of acute or chronic peptic ulcer were noted. A biopsy was taken from the region between the two openings, which showed normal mucosa and a muscularis mucosae layer. Apart from a mild gastritis, no other pathology (chronic peptic ulcer, ulcerated malignancy) suggesting an acquired origin of the double pylorus was observed. Therefore, the case was considered to be congenital in origin. The patient was successfully treated conservatively with antacids and gastrokinetics.

Our aim was to investigate the progress of wound healing after simple and surgical removal of the first two molars of the right and left maxillary segments, respectively, in Wistar rats with experimentally induced moderate chronic renal failure (CRF). Sixty Wistar rats were divided into two groups of 30 rats each: experimental and control. CRF was induced in the experimental group by an intraperitoneal injection of cisplatin, 5 mg/kg body weight (BW) initially and then with two maintenance doses of 2.5 mg/kg BW at intervals of one month. The teeth were extracted one month after the last dose of cisplatin. The sockets and the kidneys of all the rats of both groups were evaluated. The mandibles of the 15 rats in the experimental group that developed moderate CRF, together with those of two controls, were evaluated for abnormalities that suggested renal osteodystrophy. The histopathological examination showed: (a) that there were no significant differences in the pattern of wound healing no matter how the tooth was extracted; (b) there were no specific abnormalities in the mandible to indicate of secondary hyperparathyroidism or renal osteodystrophy; and (c) the kidneys of the rats of the experimental group underwent histopathological changes that were significantly different from those in the controls (P < 0.001). Our results indicate that moderate CRF does not have any appreciable or significant modifying effect on wound healing after tooth extraction in Wistar rats.

The movement of the health care and education professions from an apprenticeship model in the early half of the century to the tertiary education sector has brought an awareness of the key role field experience or practicum plays in professional development. The literature has demonstrated that field experience during teacher education and clinical education is a valuable part of preparation for entry into the teaching and nursing professions. The purpose of this study was to compare and contrast the perceptions of final year students from three distinct undergraduate field experiences. Queensland University of Technology students from adult and workplace education, secondary education, and nursing participated in the study. Data were collected through a series of focus group interviews with groups of five to nine participants across the three discipline areas. Students described their expectations of the practical side of their learning and the learning outcomes that eventuated during the practicum.
