RESUMEN

After decades of research in the neurobiology of IGF-I, its role as a prototypical neurotrophic factor is undisputed. However, many of its actions in the adult brain indicate that this growth factor is not only involved in brain development or in the response to injury. Following a three-layer assessment of its role in the central nervous system, we consider that at the cellular level, IGF-I is indeed a bona fide neurotrophic factor, modulating along ontogeny the generation and function of all the major types of brain cells, contributing to sculpt brain architecture and adaptive responses to damage. At the circuit level, IGF-I modulates neuronal excitability and synaptic plasticity at multiple sites, whereas at the system level, IGF-I intervenes in energy allocation, proteostasis, circadian cycles, mood, and cognition. Local and peripheral sources of brain IGF-I input contribute to a spatially restricted, compartmentalized, and timed modulation of brain activity. To better define these variety of actions, we consider IGF-I a modulator of brain states. This definition aims to reconcile all aspects of IGF-I neurobiology, and may provide a new conceptual framework in the design of future research on the actions of this multitasking neuromodulator in the brain.

PURPOSE: After standard treatment for glioblastoma, perfusion MRI remains challenging for differentiating tumor progression from post-treatment changes. Our objectives were (1) to correlate rCBV values at diagnosis and at first tumor progression and (2) to analyze the relationship of rCBV values at tumor recurrence with enhancing volume, localization of tumor progression, and time elapsed since the end of radiotherapy in tumor recurrence. METHODS: Inclusion criteria were (1) age > 18 years, (2) histologically confirmed glioblastoma treated with STUPP regimen, and (3) tumor progression according to RANO criteria > 12 weeks after radiotherapy. Co-registration of segmented enhancing tumor VOIs with dynamic susceptibility contrast perfusion MRI was performed using Olea Sphere software. For tumor recurrence, we correlated rCBV values with enhancing tumor volume, with recurrence localization, and with time elapsed from the end of radiotherapy to progression. Analyses were performed with SPSS software. RESULTS: Sixty-four patients with glioblastoma were included in the study. Changes in rCBV values between diagnosis and first tumor progression were significant (p < 0.001), with a mean and median decreases of 32% and 46%, respectively. Mean rCBV values were also different (p < 0.01) when tumors progressed distally (radiation field rCBV values of 1.679 versus 3.409 distally). However, changes and, therefore, low rCBV values after radiotherapy in tumor recurrence were independent of time. CONCLUSION: Chemoradiation alters tumor perfusion and rCBV values may be decreased in the setting of tumor progression. Changes in rCBV values with respect to diagnosis, with low rCBV in tumor progression, are independent of time but related to the site of recurrence.

OBJECTIVES: ANP32A is a key protector of cartilage health, via preventing oxidative stress and Wnt hyper-activation. We aimed to unravel how ANP32A is regulated in cartilage. METHODS: A bioinformatics pipeline was applied to identify regulators of ANP32A. Pathways of interest were targeted to study their impact on ANP32A in in vitro cultures of the human chondrocyte C28/I2 cell-line and primary human articular chondrocytes (hACs) from up to five different donors, using Wnt-activator CHIR99021, hypoxia-mimetic IOX2 and a hypoxia chamber. ANP32A was evaluated using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) and Western blot. In vivo, the effect of hypoxia was examined by immunohistochemistry in mice injected intra-articularly with IOX2 after destabilization of the medial meniscus. Effects of Wnt hyper-activation were investigated using Frzb-knockout mice and wild-type mice treated intra-articularly with CHIR99021. Wnt inhibition effects were assessed upon intra-articular injection of XAV939. RESULTS: The hypoxia and Wnt signaling pathways were identified as networks controlling ANP32A expression. In vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrated increases in ANP32A upon hypoxic conditions (1.3-fold in hypoxia in C28/I2 cells with 95% confidence interval (CI) [1.11-1.54] and 1.90-fold in hACs [95% CI: 1.56-2] and 1.67-fold in ANP32A protein levels after DMM surgery with IOX2 injections [95% CI: 1.33-2.08]). Wnt hyper-activation decreased ANP32A in chondrocytes in vitro (1.23-fold decrease [95% CI: 1.02-1.49]) and in mice (1.45-fold decrease after CHIR99021 injection [95% CI: 1.22-1.72] and 1.41-fold decrease in Frzb-knockout mice [95% CI: 1.00-1.96]). Hypoxia and Wnt modulated ataxia-telangiectasia mutated serine/threonine kinase (ATM), an ANP32A target gene, in hACs (1.89-fold increase [95% CI: 1.38-2.60] and 1.41-fold decrease [95% CI: 1.02-1.96]). CONCLUSIONS: Maintaining hypoxia and limiting Wnt activation sustain ANP32A and protect against osteoarthritis.

OBJECTIVE: In addition to the lungs, the placenta and the endothelium can be affected by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 (sFlt-1) and placental growth factor (PlGF) are markers of endothelial dysfunction and could potentially serve as predictors of severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). We aimed to investigate the association of serum concentrations of sFlt-1 and PlGF with the severity of COVID-19 in pregnancy. METHODS: This was a prospective cohort study carried out in a tertiary care hospital in Mexico City, Mexico. Symptomatic pregnant women with a positive reverse-transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction test for SARS-CoV-2 infection who fulfilled the criteria for hospitalization were included. The primary outcome was severe pneumonia due to COVID-19. Secondary outcomes were intensive care unit (ICU) admission, viral sepsis and maternal death. sFlt-1 levels were expressed as multiples of the median (MoM). The association between sFlt-1 and each adverse outcome was explored by logistic regression analysis, adjusted for gestational age for outcomes occurring in more than five patients, and the predictive performance was assessed by receiver-operating-characteristics-curve analysis. RESULTS: Among 113 pregnant women with COVID-19, higher sFlt-1 MoM was associated with an increased probability of severe pneumonia (adjusted odds ratio (aOR), 1.817 (95% CI, 1.365-2.418)), ICU admission (aOR, 2.195 (95% CI, 1.582-3.047)), viral sepsis (aOR, 2.318 (95% CI, 1.407-3.820)) and maternal death (unadjusted OR, 5.504 (95% CI, 1.079-28.076)). At a 10% false-positive rate, sFlt-1 MoM had detection rates of 45.2%, 66.7%, 83.3% and 100% for severe COVID-19 pneumonia, ICU admission, viral sepsis and maternal death, respectively. PlGF values were similar between women with severe and those with non-severe COVID-19 pneumonia. CONCLUSION: sFlt-1 MoM is higher in pregnant women with severe COVID-19 and has the capability to predict serious adverse pregnancy events, such as severe pneumonia, ICU admission, viral sepsis and maternal death. © 2021 International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology.

The influence of both topography and optical constants on the optical reflection of bright-annealed AISI 430 ferritic stainless steel has been analyzed to correlate these characteristics with the occurrence of the unwanted haze effect in industrial products. This work reports the analysis of the total-integrated-scattering spectra of bright-annealed AISI 430 ferritic steel plates, on the basis of the microfacet model for the bidirectional reflectance function developed by He and Torrance [Siggraph '91, Proc. of the 18th Annual Conference on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques, (1991), p. 175]. Such an approach allows for modeling the optical reflection of these stainless-steel industrial products based on roughness parameters, root-mean square height, and autocorrelation length, derived from scale-limited topographic maps. The functional choice of the cutoff wavelength in the high-pass Gaussian filtering of the topographic map is proven critical. Additionally, optical constants n and k of the steels are estimated based on their total reflection spectra, measured in an 8°/di optical geometry. The results suggest that the haze effect could be due to a non-controlled increase in the thickness of the passive layer during the bright-annealing process.

Magnetic skyrmions are quasiparticle-like textures that are topologically different from a single domain magnetization state. Their topological protection, combined with the low current density needed to move them, make these objects relevant to be used as information storage structures. In such a context, the analysis of the interactions between skyrmions is interesting and relevant for future applications. In this work, through micromagnetic simulations and numerical calculations, we studied the interaction between two skyrmions living on different parallel ferromagnetic racetracks connected by an exchange-like interaction. The upper and lower racetracks are separated by a height offset and the interaction between the upper and the lower skyrmion is analyzed in terms of the magnetic and geometrical parameters. Three states are predicted, as a function of these parameters: scattered or free skyrmions, bound skymions, and annihilated skyrmions. Our results, presented in a phase diagram, demonstrate that even in the case here called free skyrmions, there is a small and brief interaction when both are close enough, but the skyrmion in the top layer does not drag the skyrmion in the bottom layer. For bound skyrmions, both keep linked during larger times. In the latter case, there are strong changes in the velocity of the skyrmions induced by the effect of a higher effective mass when both are coupled.

PURPOSE: The ultrasonographic and hemodynamic features of patients with carotid near-occlusion (CNO) are still not well known. Our aim was to describe the ultrasonographic and hemodynamic characteristics of a cohort of patients with CNO. METHODS: A prospective, observational, nationwide, and multicenter study was conducted from January/2010 to May/2016. Patients with digital subtraction angiography (DSA)-confirmed CNO were included. We collected information on clinical and demographic characteristics, carotid and transcranial ultrasonography and DSA findings, presence of full-collapse, collateral circulation, and cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR). RESULTS: One hundred thirty-five patients were analyzed. Ultrasonographic and DSA diagnosis of CNO were concordant in only 44%. This disagreement was related to the presence/absence of full-collapse: 45% of patients with CNO with full-collapse were classified as a complete carotid occlusion, and 40% with a CNO without full-collapse were interpreted as severe stenosis (p < 0.001). Mean velocities (mV) and pulsatility indexes (PIs) were significantly lower in the ipsilateral middle cerebral artery compared with the contralateral (43 cm/s vs 58 cm/s, p < 0.001; 0.80 vs 1.00, p < 0.001). Collateral circulation was identified in 92% of patients, with the anterior communicating artery (73%) being the most frequent. CVR was decreased or exhausted in 66% of cases and was more frequent in patients with a poor or absent collateral network compared with patients with ≥ 2 collateral arteries (82% vs 56%, p = 0.051). CONCLUSION: The accuracy of carotid ultrasonography in the diagnosis of CNO seems to be limited, with significant discrepancies with DSA. Decreased ipsilateral mV, PI, and CVR suggest a hemodynamic compromise in patients with CNO.

A polymer optical Sagnac interferometer is proposed as a compact and low-cost refractive index sensor for the first time to our best knowledge. The Sagnac interferometer is fabricated by only one piece of fiber to facilitate its fabrication and to avoid losses due to misalignment or fusion. The coupler was developed based on chemical and twisting techniques of ∼5cm of fiber. We modified the coupling ratio by varying the refractive index of media surrounding the coupler and consequently modified the transmission. For several values of mass percent concentration of sugar solutions surrounding the coupler, we found that transmittance decreases as the mass concentration increases. However, the decay is faster for the low concentration, while the decay is slower for higher concentrations. Two sets of experiments were carried out, at high (≥ 1 gm/100 ml) and low (<1gm/100ml) mass concentration of sugar solutions. The calibration of the sensor was done at 733 nm, where the response of the interferometer displays larger transmission variations for different solutions. The refractive index estimation was possible by correlation of the transmittance function (calculated by fitting the experimental data) with a linear refractive index model. The estimated resolution of the system is 0.057 weight percent of sugar solution, determined by the noise of the system.

BACKGROUND: Capillary malformation-arteriovenous malformation (CM-AVM) syndrome is a rare syndrome with characteristic skin lesions that are associated with fast-flow vascular malformations (FFVMs) in one-third of patients. Few case series have been described, and none in Spain. AIM: To identify the prevalence of dermatological parameters, FFVMs and associated features in a large series of patients with CM-AVM. METHODS: We conducted an observational study of patients with CM-AVM syndrome diagnosed in 15 Spanish hospitals over 3 years. The main clinical, radiological, genetic findings and associated diseases were analysed. RESULTS: In total, 64 patients were assessed. In 26.5% of cases, the diagnosis was incidental. In 75% of patients, there was one significantly larger macule, which we termed the 'herald patch'. FFVMs were detected in 34% of the patients, with 30% located on the skin, 7.8% in the brain and in 1.5% in the spine. There was a positive family history in 65% of the 64 patients. Genetic analysis was performed for RASA1 mutations in 57 patients, of whom 42 (73%) had a positive result. All 4 patients tested for EPHB4 mutations had a positive result. No tumour lesions were detected in the series, except for five infantile haemangiomas. CONCLUSIONS: Our data on clinical lesions, associated FFVM, family history and genetics are similar to those previously published in the literature. An extensive data analysis failed to demonstrate any statistically significant association between the presence of an FFVM and any clinical, familial or genetic parameter that could predict its onset, although a link between the presence of a herald patch on the midline face and the presence of a brain FFVM was observed. We did not detect any genotype-phenotype correlation.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The existence of contraindications to intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) is considered a criterion for direct transfer of patients with suspected acute stroke to thrombectomy-capable centers in the prehospital setting. Our aim was to assess the utility of this criterion in a setting where routing protocols are defined by the Madrid - Direct Referral to Endovascular Center (M-DIRECT) prehospital scale. METHODS: This was a post hoc analysis of the M-DIRECT study. Reported contraindications to IVT were retrospectively collected from emergency medical services reports and categorized into late window, anticoagulant treatment and other contraindications. Final diagnosis and treatment rates were compared between patients with and without reported IVT contraindications and according to anticoagulant treatment or late window categories. RESULTS: The M-DIRECT study included 541 patients. Reported IVT contraindications were present in 227 (42.0%) patients. Regarding final diagnosis no significant differences were found between patients with or without reported IVT contraindications: ischaemic stroke (any) 65.6% vs. 62.1%, ischaemic stroke with large vessel occlusion (LVO) 32.2% vs. 28.3%, hemorrhagic stroke 15.4% vs. 15.6%, stroke mimic 18.9% vs. 22.3% respectively. Amongst patients with LVO, endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) was performed less often in the presence of IVT contraindications (56.2% vs. 74.2%). M-DIRECT-positive patients had higher rates of LVO and EVT compared with M-DIRECT-negative patients independent of reported IVT contraindications. CONCLUSIONS: Reported IVT contraindications alone do not increase EVT likelihood and should not be considered to determine routing in urban stroke networks.

It is shown that the interplay between curvature and interfacial Dzyalonshinsky-Moriya interaction (DMI) is a pathway to ultrafast domain wall (DW) dynamics in ferromagnetic nanotubes. In this work, we theoretically study the effect that interfacial DMI has on the average velocity of a vortex DW in thin ferromagnetic nanotubes grown around a core composed of heavy atoms. Our main result shows that by delaying the Walker breakdown instability, the DW average velocity is of the order of 103 m s-1, which is greater than usual values for these systems. The remarkable velocities achieved through this configuration could greatly benefit the development of spintronic devices.

We tested different optical elements placed in three different positions by applying the irradiance transport equation (ITE), obtaining the wavefront $[ W(x,y) ]$[W(x,y)] and aberration surface [$ \textit{AS}(r,\theta ) $AS(r,θ)]. The existing noise in the captures $ I $I as well as in the $ W $W and $ AS $AS were analyzed applying several filters: first a filter based on Legendre polynomials (LP), generating the most probable points increasing the data resolution; second, a filter based on a 50 deg 2D-LP was used as a multilineal fit (multiple linear regression); and third, an ideal bandpass filter in the Fourier space after inducing a periodicity using Ronchi simulated masks with periods in $ x,y,xy $x,y,xy was used to perform data scanning (similar to the four-step phase-shifting method). Signal-to-noise ratio values were obtained for each proposed filter along with the most probable image free from noise, determined from a linear combination of the original data and the applied filters.

We introduce a technique for obtaining three-dimensional (3D) profiles of objects captured in two-dimensional (2D) flat images (FI). This technique performs a numerical approximation of the object's topography from their image gray tones, analyzing topological concepts such as algebraic bases construction, metric functions in terms of such bases, as well as modeling and development of an isomorphism to project masks (fringe patterns) in the FI, allowing us to use the optimal 3D profilometry techniques. Among these techniques, phase shifting (four steps) is applied in the pattern shifts of the projected masks, but with a 2D shift from left to right and from top to bottom, simultaneously. Moreover, the fringe patterns in the masks are binary and with superposed periods in x, y (bi-Ronchi). We show the results of the construction of the masks, as well as their projection into the FIs. We also show the 3D profilometry of the objects after the projection and phase-shifting application and a simple segmentation to observe a particular object. Subsequently, we perform the analysis of a single Mg crystal's micrography.

Thermal stress limits beef cattle production and a shorter hair coat is a key thermoregulative adaptation that allows cattle to lose heat more efficiently. The objective of this study was to identify genetic variants associated with the length of the undercoat and topcoat of cattle utilizing 1456 Brangus heifers genotyped with the Bovine GGP F250 array. Seven SNPs in the PCCA gene were significantly associated with undercoat length. PCCA belongs to the biotin transport and metabolism pathway. Biotin deficiency has been reported to cause hair loss. Four SNPs in an 110 kb including a missense mutation in the PRLR gene were significantly associated with topcoat length. Whereas the association of this polymorphism with hair length is novel, the SLICK mutation in PRLR has previously been demonstrated to significantly impact hair length in cattle. These newly detected genetic variants may contribute to a shorter hair coat and more thermotolerant animals.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the histopathological characteristics of the pink macules of the CM-AVM syndrome and to investigate if these pink macules could be classified as capillary malformations or arteriovenous malformations based on their histopathological features. DESIGN-SETTINGS-PARTICIPANTS: We conducted a retrospective multicenter study involving eight hospitals in Spain. Fifteen biopsies from pink macules of the CM-AVM syndrome were analysed and compared with five biopsies of diverse capillary malformations and three stage I arteriovenous malformations. RESULTS: Pink macules' biopsies of the CM-AVM syndrome showed similar features including a high vascular density encompassing capillaries and numerous thick-walled arterioles mainly located in the superficial dermis, a predominance of elongated over round vessels, scarce or absent erythrocytes within the lumina and discrete perivascular inflammation. CMs were characterized by an increased number of capillary-type vessels mostly rounded and located in the upper dermis. AVMs were composed by highly increased numbers of vessels with a branching pattern involving the full thickness of the dermis, without erythrocytes within the lumina. Wilms tumour 1 protein was positive in the endothelial cells both in pink macules of the CM-AVM and in arteriovenous malformations. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: Pink macules of the CM-AVM syndrome seem to be different from capillary malformations. Our results suggest that histologically and immunohistochemically they are closer to incipient arteriovenous malformations than to capillary malformations. A deepened knowledge about the nature of these skin lesions will contribute to the better understanding of capillary malformation-arteriovenous malformation syndrome, and will open the possibility of new and more specific treatments in the future.

OBJECTIVE: Chile is an attractive case study because of the deep political changes that it underwent over a short period of time: from a universal health service (60s), through a neoliberal reform (70s) and onto a series of legislative reforms (80s-90s). This article aims to explore and assess the evolution of health outcomes, equity, and utilization in Chile through the last period of these reforms (1990-2015). STUDY DESIGN: Standardized health equity analysis. METHODS: We conducted a standardized economic analysis on health equity and healthcare utilization using the ADePT software (by the World Bank) and using data from the Chilean National Socio-economic Survey. We evaluated trends of health equity and examined concentration curves of health utilization of healthcare services and health outcomes such as children/elder/pregnant nutritional status, self-reported health, and physical limitations. RESULTS: Health outcomes such as nutritional problems in children and pregnant women were concentrated among the poor, while others such as high-relevance health conditions were similar for poorest and richest households. The concentration indexes for health outcomes suggested that income makes the distribution pro-poor. However, the opposite was true for age, in which the probability of health problems among rich individuals increased with age. The concentration curves for utilization of healthcare services showed that dental visits, laboratory exams, specialty visits, and hospitalizations were concentrated on the richest households, while the use of emergency services and preventive medicine were highly concentrated among poor individuals. CONCLUSIONS: Although a positive trend in the increase of healthcare service use among income groups was observed, a significant impact of the latest health reform was not observed.

We show that an inhomogeneity in the spin-transfer torques in a metallic ferromagnet under suitable conditions strongly amplifies incoming spin waves. Moreover, at nonzero temperatures the incoming thermally occupied spin waves will be amplified such that the region with inhomogeneous spin-transfer torques emits spin waves spontaneously, thus constituting a spin-wave laser. We determine the spin-wave scattering amplitudes for a simplified model and setup, and show under which conditions the amplification and lasing occurs. Our results are interpreted in terms of a so-called black-hole laser, and could facilitate the field of magnonics, which aims to utilize spin waves in logic and data-processing devices.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The aim was to identify whether post-stroke hyperglycaemia (PSH) influences the levels of circulating biomarkers of brain damage and repair, and to explore whether these biomarkers mediate the effect of PSH on the ischaemic stroke (IS) outcome. METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of the Glycaemia in Acute Stroke II study. Biomarkers of inflammation, prothrombotic activity, endothelial dysfunction, blood-brain barrier rupture, cell death and brain repair processes were analysed at 24-48 h (baseline) and 72-96 h (follow-up) after IS. The associations of the biomarkers and stroke outcome (modified Rankin Scale score at 3 months) based on the presence of PSH were compared. RESULTS: A total of 174 patients participated in this sub-study. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) at admission was negatively correlated with glucose levels. PSH was associated with a trend toward higher levels of endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) at baseline. The EPCs in the PSH group then decreased in the follow-up samples (-8.5 ± 10.3) compared with the non-PSH group (4.7 ± 7.33; P = 0.024). However, neither BDNF nor EPC values had correlation with the 3-month outcome. Higher interleukin-6 at follow-up was associated with poor outcomes (modified Rankin Scale > 2) independently of PSH. CONCLUSION: Post-stroke hyperglycaemia appears to be associated with a negative regulation of BDNF and a different reaction in EPC levels. However, neither BDNF nor EPCs showed significant mediation of the PSH association with IS outcome, and only higher interleukin-6 in the follow-up samples (72-96 h) was related to poor outcomes, independently of PSH status. Further studies are needed to achieve definite conclusions.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The risk of recurrent stroke amongst patients with symptomatic carotid near-occlusion (SCNO) has not been clearly established, and its management remains controversial. The aim was to define the 24-month risk of recurrent stroke and to analyse the effect of the different treatment modalities (medical treatment and revascularization) in a population of patients with SCNO. METHODS: A multicentre, nationwide, prospective study from January 2010 to May 2016 was performed. Patients with angiography-confirmed SCNO were included. The primary end-point was ipsilateral ischaemic stroke including periprocedural events within 24 months following the presenting event. Revascularization results and periprocedural complications, ipsilateral transient ischaemic attack, disabling or fatal stroke, and mortality were also noted. RESULTS: The study population comprised 141 patients from 17 Spanish centres. Seventy patients (49.6%) were treated by revascularization (carotid stenting in 47, endarterectomy in 23). Complete revascularization was achieved in 58 patients (83%). Periprocedural stroke or death occurred in 5.7%. The 24-month cumulative incidence of the primary end-point was 11.1% (95% confidence interval 5.8-16.4; n = 15), 12% in the medical treatment group and 10.2% in the revascularization group, log-rank P = 0.817. The cumulative rates of ipsilateral ischaemic stroke or transient ischaemic attack, disabling or fatal stroke, and mortality, were 17%, 4.5% and 7.5%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The rate of ipsilateral ischaemic stroke in patients with SCNO seems to be lower than the known rate associated with severe carotid stenosis without near-occlusion. The potential benefit of revascularization in the prevention of stroke in patients with SCNO may be influenced by the effectiveness and safety of the procedure.

OBJECTIVE: Neurological symptoms in patients with cat-scratch disease (CSD) have been rarely reported. The aim of this study is to analyze the frequency of neurological CSD (NCSD) and describe the disease clinical presentation, management and outcome. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrospectively selected patients with a CSD syndrome and Bartonella IgG titers > 1:256. Data regarding epidemiological, clinical, management, and follow-up features were analyzed and discussed. A comparison between NCSD and non-neurological CSD (NNCSD) was established. RESULTS: Thirty-nine CSD patients were selected. NCSD frequency was 10.25%. No children were found affected in the NCSD group. A 65.7% of NNCSD and the entirety of the NCSD group had a history of cat exposure. Immunosuppression was only present in the NNCSD group (8.6%). NCSD presentations were as follows: isolated aseptic meningitis (25%), neuroretinitis (50%), and isolated optic neuritis (25%). A greater proportion of patients in the NCSD group had fever and raised levels of acute phase reactants and white blood cells. 85.7% of NNCSD had a complete recovery, whereas only 50% of the NCSD patients experienced a full recovery. CONCLUSION: NCSD may be a distinctive group compared to NNCSD due to its later age of presentation, the more intense systemic response, and the poorer outcome.
