Curculigo orchioides Gaertn. is a precious herb used in traditional medicine systems in Asian countries for various health benefits. This study investigated the potential protective effects of C. orchioides extract on reproductive health under heat stress conditions in male mice. Forty-eight mice were divided into eight groups, control condition (C group), C. orchioides extract at the dosages of 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg/day (C100, C200, C400 group), 40 °C heat exposure (H group), and combined 40 °C heat exposure and C. orchioides extract at the dosages of 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg/day (HC100, HC200, HC400 group). The result shows that the mice that received only C. orchioides extract without heat stress do not have a significant change in histological structure and testosterone level. The histological analysis of testicular tissue showed that heat stress conditions reduced reproductive function and inhibited the spermatogenesis of male mice. The C. orchioides rhizome extract treatment attenuated the heat stress-induced spermatogenesis complications in the murine model. Mice in the heat-stress group treated with C. orchioides extract had increased spermatogenic cells and spermatozoa compared with mice exposed to heat without C. orchioides treatment. Moreover, the aqueous extract of C. orchioides rhizome enhanced the serum total testosterone levels in heat-exposed mice. In conclusion, the study findings validate that C. orchioides is effective against heat stress-induced spermatogenesis complications in the murine model.

BACKGROUND: Hemophilia A (HEMA) is an X-linked bleeding disorder caused by reduced/absent coagulation factor VIII expression, as a result of pathogenic variants in the F8 gene. Preimplantation prevention of HEMA should ideally include direct pathogenic F8 variant detection, complemented by linkage analysis of flanking markers to identify the high-risk F8 allele. Linkage analysis is particularly indispensable when the pathogenic variant cannot be detected directly or identified. This study evaluated the suitability of a panel of F8 intragenic and extragenic short tandem repeat markers for standalone linkage-based preimplantation genetic testing for monogenic disorder (PGT-M) of the Inv22 pathogenic variant, an almost 600 kb paracentric inversion responsible for almost half of all severe HEMA globally, for which direct detection is challenging. METHODS: Thirteen markers spanning 1 Mb and encompassing both F8 and the Inv22 inversion interval were genotyped in 153 unrelated females of Viet Kinh ethnicity. RESULTS: All individuals were heterozygous for ≥ 1 marker, ~ 90% were heterozygous for ≥ 1 of the five F8 intragenic markers, and almost 98% were heterozygous for ≥ 1 upstream (telomeric) and ≥ 1 downstream (centromeric) markers. A prospective PGT-M couple at risk of transmitting F8 Inv22 were fully informative at four marker loci (2 intra-inversion, 1 centromeric, 1 telomeric) and partially informative at another five (2 intra-inversion, 3 centromeric), allowing robust phasing of low- and high-risk haplotypes. In vitro fertilization produced three embryos, all of which clearly inherited the low-risk maternal allele, enabling reliable unaffected diagnoses. A single embryo transfer produced a clinical pregnancy, which was confirmed as unaffected by amniocentesis and long-range PCR, and a healthy baby girl was delivered at term. CONCLUSION: Robust and reliable PGT-M of HEMA, including the common F8 Inv22 pathogenic variant, can be achieved with sufficient informative intragenic and flanking markers.

In the quest of improving the photocatalytic efficiency of photocatalysts, the combination of two and more semiconductors recently has garnered significant attention among scientists in the field. The doping of conductive metals is also an effective pathway to improve photocatalytic performance by avoiding electron/hole pair recombination and enhancing photon energy absorption. This work presented a design and fabrication of porphyrin@g-C3N4/Ag nanocomposite using acid-base neutralization-induced self-assembly approach from monomeric porphyrin and g-C3N4/Ag material. g-C3N4/Ag material was synthesized by a green reductant of Cleistocalyx operculatus leaf extract. Electron scanning microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), FT-IR spectroscopy, and UV-vis spectrometer were utilized to analyse the properties of the prepared materials. The prepared porphyrin@g-C3N4/Ag nanocomposite showed well integration of porphyrin nanostructures on the g-C3N4/Ag's surface, in which porphyrin nanofiber was of the diameter in nanoscales and the length of several micrometers, and Ag NPs had an average particle size of less than 20 nm. The photocatalytic behavior of the resultant nanocomposite was tested for the degradation of Rhodamine B dye, which exhibited a remarkable RhB photodegrading percentage. The possible mechanism for photocatalysis of the porphyrin@g-C3N4/Ag nanocomposite toward Rhodamine B dye was also proposed and discussed.

BACKGROUND: Multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) angiography is a useful examination to detect the source of the bleeding in patients with hemoptysis. The aim of the study was to prospectively evaluate the role and clinical efficacy of MDCT angiography before bronchial artery embolization (BAE) for the management of hemoptysis, and to investigate the predictors of early recurrence. METHODS: It is a double-center study which included 57 hemoptysis patients undergoing MDCT angiography prior to BAE from August 2019 to July 2020. A prospective analysis of culprit arteries detected by MDCT angiography allowed an evaluation of the role of this technique. A follow-up was done to assess the efficacy of BAE with preprocedural MDCT angiography and to explore the risk factors of early recurrent hemoptysis. RESULTS: The accuracy of MDCT angiography in the identification of culprit arteries was as high as 97.5%. The average number of total culprit arteries per patient was 2.75 ± 1.73. Among which, the average numbers of culprit ectopic bronchial arteries (BAs) and non-bronchial systemic arteries (NBSAs) per patient were 0.21 ± 0.41 and 1.04 ± 1.57, respectively. The immediate clinical success rate, total hemoptysis recurrence rate, and early hemoptysis recurrence rate of BAE following MDCT angiography were 94.7, 18.5, 16.7%, respectively. Aspergilloma (HR = 6.63, 95% CI: 1.31-33.60, p = 0.022) was associated with an increase in the risk of early recurrence. CONCLUSIONS: MDCT angiography should be performed before BAE for the management of hemoptysis. Aspergilloma was an independent predictor for early recurrence.

Kubernetes, an open-source container orchestration platform, enables high availability and scalability through diverse autoscaling mechanisms such as Horizontal Pod Autoscaler (HPA), Vertical Pod Autoscaler and Cluster Autoscaler. Amongst them, HPA helps provide seamless service by dynamically scaling up and down the number of resource units, called pods, without having to restart the whole system. Kubernetes monitors default Resource Metrics including CPU and memory usage of host machines and their pods. On the other hand, Custom Metrics, provided by external software such as Prometheus, are customizable to monitor a wide collection of metrics. In this paper, we investigate HPA through diverse experiments to provide critical knowledge on its operational behaviors. We also discuss the essential difference between Kubernetes Resource Metrics (KRM) and Prometheus Custom Metrics (PCM) and how they affect HPA's performance. Lastly, we provide deeper insights and lessons on how to optimize the performance of HPA for researchers, developers, and system administrators working with Kubernetes in the future.

Sirtuin 2 (SIRT2), a NAD(+)-dependent histone deacetylase, is involved in carcinogenesis and genomic instability and modulates proinflammatory immune responses. However, its role in renal inflammatory injury has not been demonstrated. In this study, we explored the expression patterns of CXCL2 and CCL2 in kidney tissue from Sirt2(-/-) and Sirt2(+/+) mice and in mouse proximal tubular epithelial (MPT) cells. CXCL2 and CCL2 were significantly downregulated at both the mRNA and the protein levels in kidneys of LPS-treated Sirt2(-/-) mice compared with those of LPS-treated Sirt2(+/+) mice. Furthermore, SIRT2 deficiency ameliorated LPS-induced infiltration of neutrophils and macrophages, acute tubular injury, and decrease of renal function. Supporting these observations, CXCL2 and CCL2 expression levels were lower in MPT cells treated with SIRT2-siRNA than in cells treated with control-siRNA, and adenovirus-mediated overexpression of SIRT2 in MPT cells significantly increased the LPS-induced expression of CXCL2 and CCL2 at the mRNA and protein levels. In addition, SIRT2 interacted with mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) phosphatase-1 (MKP-1), and SIRT2-knockdown increased the acetylation of MKP-1 and suppressed the phosphorylation of p38 MAPK and c-Jun N-terminal kinase in LPS-treated MPT cells. SIRT2 also regulated p65 binding to the promoters of CXCL2 and CCL2. Taken together, these findings indicate that SIRT2 is associated with expression of renal CXCL2 and CCL2 and that regulation of SIRT2 might be an important therapeutic target for renal inflammatory injury.

BACKGROUND: Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) selection and identification are the most important tasks in Genome-wide association data analysis. The problem is difficult because genome-wide association data is very high dimensional and a large portion of SNPs in the data is irrelevant to the disease. Advanced machine learning methods have been successfully used in Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) for identification of genetic variants that have relatively big effects in some common, complex diseases. Among them, the most successful one is Random Forests (RF). Despite of performing well in terms of prediction accuracy in some data sets with moderate size, RF still suffers from working in GWAS for selecting informative SNPs and building accurate prediction models. In this paper, we propose to use a new two-stage quality-based sampling method in random forests, named ts-RF, for SNP subspace selection for GWAS. The method first applies p-value assessment to find a cut-off point that separates informative and irrelevant SNPs in two groups. The informative SNPs group is further divided into two sub-groups: highly informative and weak informative SNPs. When sampling the SNP subspace for building trees for the forest, only those SNPs from the two sub-groups are taken into account. The feature subspaces always contain highly informative SNPs when used to split a node at a tree. RESULTS: This approach enables one to generate more accurate trees with a lower prediction error, meanwhile possibly avoiding overfitting. It allows one to detect interactions of multiple SNPs with the diseases, and to reduce the dimensionality and the amount of Genome-wide association data needed for learning the RF model. Extensive experiments on two genome-wide SNP data sets (Parkinson case-control data comprised of 408,803 SNPs and Alzheimer case-control data comprised of 380,157 SNPs) and 10 gene data sets have demonstrated that the proposed model significantly reduced prediction errors and outperformed most existing the-state-of-the-art random forests. The top 25 SNPs in Parkinson data set were identified by the proposed model including four interesting genes associated with neurological disorders. CONCLUSION: The presented approach has shown to be effective in selecting informative sub-groups of SNPs potentially associated with diseases that traditional statistical approaches might fail. The new RF works well for the data where the number of case-control objects is much smaller than the number of SNPs, which is a typical problem in gene data and GWAS. Experiment results demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed RF model that outperformed the state-of-the-art RFs, including Breiman's RF, GRRF and wsRF methods.

Hyaluronan (HA), a component of the extracellular matrix, modulates cellular behavior including angiogenesis. However, little is known about the effect of HA on lymphangiogenesis in fibrosis model. In this study, we investigated the roles of HA in lymphangiogenesis of unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO). We found that HA cooperated synergistically with vascular endothelial cell growth factor-C to stimulate capillary-like tube formation and increase migration of cells in a haptotaxis assay. Accumulation of HA in the cortical interstitial space was positively correlated with the number of lymphatic vessels after UUO. Depletion of macrophages with clodronate decreased UUO-induced HA accumulation and lymphangiogenesis. Additionally, hyaluronan synthase (HAS) mRNA expression and HA production were increased in bone marrow-derived macrophages upon stimulation with TGF-ß1. Transfer of mHAS2 and mHAS3 knock-down CD11b-positive macrophages to SCID mice resulted in a partial decrease in UUO-induced lymphangiogenesis. HA increased expression of vascular endothelial cell growth factor-C in macrophages. Vascular endothelial cell growth factor-C expression and LYVE-1-positive lymphatic area was significantly lower in the UUO-kidney from TLR4 null mice than that from TLR4 wild-type mice. Collectively, these results suggest that HA increases lymphangiogenesis in renal fibrosis model and also stimulates vascular endothelial cell growth factor-C production from macrophages through Toll-like receptor 4-dependent signal pathway.

Random forests (RFs) have been widely used as a powerful classification method. However, with the randomization in both bagging samples and feature selection, the trees in the forest tend to select uninformative features for node splitting. This makes RFs have poor accuracy when working with high-dimensional data. Besides that, RFs have bias in the feature selection process where multivalued features are favored. Aiming at debiasing feature selection in RFs, we propose a new RF algorithm, called xRF, to select good features in learning RFs for high-dimensional data. We first remove the uninformative features using p-value assessment, and the subset of unbiased features is then selected based on some statistical measures. This feature subset is then partitioned into two subsets. A feature weighting sampling technique is used to sample features from these two subsets for building trees. This approach enables one to generate more accurate trees, while allowing one to reduce dimensionality and the amount of data needed for learning RFs. An extensive set of experiments has been conducted on 47 high-dimensional real-world datasets including image datasets. The experimental results have shown that RFs with the proposed approach outperformed the existing random forests in increasing the accuracy and the AUC measures.

We consider a Sensor-Aided Cognitive Radio Network (SACRN) in which sensors capable of harvesting energy are distributed throughout the network to support secondary transmitters for sensing licensed channels in order to improve both energy and spectral efficiency. Harvesting ambient energy is one of the most promising solutions to mitigate energy deficiency, prolong device lifetime, and partly reduce the battery size of devices. So far, many works related to SACRN have considered single secondary users capable of harvesting energy in whole slot as well as short-term throughput. In the paper, we consider two types of energy harvesting sensor nodes (EHSN): Type-I sensor nodes will harvest ambient energy in whole slot duration, whereas type-II sensor nodes will only harvest energy after carrying out spectrum sensing. In the paper, we also investigate long-term throughput in the scheduling window, and formulate the throughput maximization problem by considering energy-neutral operation conditions of type-I and -II sensors and the target detection probability. Through simulations, it is shown that the sensing energy consumption of all sensor nodes can be efficiently managed with the proposed scheme to achieve optimal long-term throughput in the window.

INTRODUCTION: SIRT2 is a NAD(+)-dependent deacetylases and associated with numerous processes such as infection, carcinogenesis, DNA damage and cell cycle regulation. However, the role of SIRT2 in inflammatory process in macrophage remains unclear. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the present study, we have evaluated the regulatory effects of SIRT2 in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated macrophages isolated from SIRT2 knockout (KO) and wild type (WT) mice or Raw264.7 macrophage cells. As inflammatory parameters, expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), the productions of nitric oxide, reactive oxygen species (ROS) and M1-macrophage-related factors were evaluated. We also examined the effects of SIRT2 on activation of nuclear factor-kappaB (NFκB) signaling. RESULTS: SIRT2 deficiency inhibits LPS-induced iNOS mRNA and protein expression in bone marrow derived macrophages. SIRT2-siRNA transfection also suppressed LPS-induced iNOS expression in Raw264.7 macrophage cells. Bone marrow derived macrophages isolated from SIRT2 KO mice produced lower nitric oxide and expressed lower levels of M1-macrophage related markers including iNOS and CD86 in response to LPS than WT mice. Decrease of SIRT2 reduced the LPS-induced reactive oxygen species production. Deficiency of SIRT2 resulted in inhibition of NFκB activation through reducing the phosphorylation and degradation of IκBα. The phosphorylation and nuclear translocation of p65 was significantly decreased in SIRT2-deficient macrophages after LPS stimulation. DISCUSSION: Our data suggested that deficiency of SIRT2 ameliorates iNOS, NO expression and reactive oxygen species production with suppressing LPS-induced activation of NFκB in macrophages.

The prevalence of K deficiency and negative K balance in rice production increases the demand for K fertilizer. However, the primary source of K fertilizer, potash rock, is limited. Recycling K from cow manure compost (CMC) is a sustainable solution. Nevertheless, the effects of substituting K fertilizer with CMC on rice yield, soil K fertility, and partial K balance (PKB) are not well understood. Therefore, a field experiment with four treatments (control - unfertilized, MNP K - CMC plus NPK fertilizer, MNP ½ K - CMC plus NP and 50 % K fertilizer, and MNP - CMC plus NP fertilizer) was conducted from 2020 to 2022 to study the effects of replacing K fertilizer with K from CMC on rice growth, yield, plant K uptake, soil K fertility, and PKB. The results indicated that K input from CMC exceeded the recommended K fertilizer level, sufficient for optimal rice growth and yield over three growing seasons and plant K uptake in the last two seasons. Plant K uptake increased with total K input and reached a plateau when total K input approached the maximum plant K uptake. In the MNP treatment, PKB was negative in the first two seasons but became positive in the last season, owing to the equivalence between K input from CMC and plant K uptake. Key factors influencing PKB in this treatment were K input from CMC and plant K uptake. Increasing the CMC application rate during the first two seasons could lead to a positive PKB. In this treatment, soil exchangeable K changed correspondingly with PKB, decreasing in the first two seasons but increasing in the last season. Overall, determining the appropriate amount of CMC application for a positive PKB is vital for the sustainability of substituting K fertilizer with K from CMC in paddy rice systems.

This study applied an electro-Fenton process using chemically modified activated carbon derived from rubber seed shells loaded with α-FeOOH (RSCF) as catalyst to remove tetracycline residues from aquatic environment. Catalyst characteristics were evaluated using SEM, EDS, XRD, and XPS, showing successful insertion of iron onto the activated carbon. The effects of the parameters were investigated, and the highest treatment efficiency was achieved at pH of 3, Fe: H2O2 ratio (w/w) of 500:1, catalyst dose of 1 g/L, initial TCH concentration of 100 mg/L, and electric current of 150 mA, with more than 90% of TCH being eliminated within 30 min. Furthermore, even after five cycles of use, the treatment efficiency remains above 90%. The rate constant is calculated to be 0.218 min-1, with high regression coefficients (R 2 = 0.93). The activation energy (Ea) was found to be 32.2 kJ/mol, indicating that the degradation of TCH was a simple reaction with a low activation energy. These findings showed that the RSCF is a highly efficient and cost-effective catalyst for TCH degradation. Moreover, the use of e-Fenton process has the advantage of high efficiency, low cost thanks to the recyclability of the catalyst, and environmental friendliness thanks to less use of H2O2.

Sugarcane bagasse is one of the most common Vietnamese agricultural waste, which possesses a large percentage of cellulose, making it an abundant and environmentally friendly source for the fabrication of cellulose carbon aerogel. Herein, waste sugarcane bagasse was used to synthesize cellulose aerogel using different crosslinking agents such as urea, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and sodium alginate (SA). The 3D porous network of cellulose aerogels was constructed by intermolecular hydrogen bonding, which was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and nitrogen adsorption/desorption. Among the three cellulose aerogel samples, cellulose - SA aerogel (SB-CA-SA) has low density of 0.04 g m-3 and high porosity of 97.38%, leading to high surface area of 497.9 m2 g-1 with 55.67% micropores of activated carbon aerogel (SB-ACCA-SA). The salt adsorption capacity was high (17.87 mg g-1), which can be further enhanced to 31.40 mg g-1 with the addition of CNT. Moreover, the desalination process using the SB-ACCA-SA-CNT electrode was stable even after 50 cycles. The results show the great combination of cellulose from waste sugarcane bagasse with sodium alginate and carbon nanotubes in the fabrication of carbon materials as the CDI-utilized electrodes with high desalination capability and good durability.

Background: Alcohol use and alcohol-related health problems are on the rise in developing countries. This meta-analysis was conducted to determine the effects of alcohol consumption on human male reproductive function through semen parameters, antioxidants in semen, sperm DNA fragmentation, and sex hormones. Methods: Studies regarding the effects of alcohol consumption on male reproductive function were searched on databases. Based on the random-effects model, STATA software was used to analyze and synthesize the selected studies. Alcoholics, moderate alcoholics, heavy alcoholics, and no alcoholics values were compared using the standard mean difference. Publications were assessed for publication bias by the Egger test. Result: Forty studies were selected from databases examining the effect of alcohol consumption on male reproductive health in 23,258 people on five continents of the world. The meta-analysis revealed that alcohol intake reduced semen volume during each ejaculation (SMD = -0.51; 95% CI -0.77, -0.25). However, there were no significant associations with other semen indicators such as density, mobility, and normal and abnormal sperm count from this analysis. In addition, drinking alcohol lowered antioxidant enzymes in semen (SMD = -7.93; 95% CI -12.59, -3.28) but had no effect on sperm DNA fragmentation. Finally, the results showed a decrease in general testosterone levels (SMD = -1.60; 95% CI -2.05, -1.15), Follicle Stimulating Hormone (SMD = -0.47; 95% CI -0.88, -0.05), Luteinizing Hormone (SMD = -1.35; 95% CI -1.86, -0.83), but no effect in other sex hormones named as estradiol, Inhibin B and Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin. Furthermore, when analyzing subgroups at different drinking levels, the results showed that the moderate alcoholic group (less than 7 units/week) had no change in the semen index. Meanwhile, the group of heavy alcoholics (more than 7 units/week) harmed the semen index and sex hormones, especially by increasing estradiol. Conclusion: There is evidence that alcohol consumption affected semen volume and antioxidant, reproductive hormones thus negatively affecting male reproductive function. This study might be necessary to make recommendations regarding alcohol consumption for men.

Background: Gynostemma pentaphyllum (GP), also called Giao-co-lam, is a traditional Vietnamese herb, also known as the "Herb of Immortality", that grows throughout Asian countries and is used for the treatment of hematuria, edema in the pharynx and neck, tumors, and trauma. Methods: In this study, we investigated the effects of culture conditions on cell growth and total gypenoside accumulation in the GP suspension cells. Cells were cultured on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 2.0 mg/L KIN and 0.5 mg/L IBA, and different inoculum sizes (2-4 g) for 10-24 days. Results: The results showed that the optimum inoculum size and shaking speed were 3 g of callus and 120 rpm, respectively. The highest cell biomass reached was 5.833 g of fresh weight, corresponding to 0.136 g of dry weight after 20 days of culture. The total gypenoside and Rb1 accumulation was the highest after 18 days of culture, with 46.498 mg/g and 0.038 mg/g dry weight, respectively. In addition, the crude extract from GP cell suspension cultures remarkably improved pathological changes in mouse testicular tissue after scrotal heat exposure. Blood testosterone levels were significantly increased in heat-exposed mice treated with the GP cell suspension culture extract. Conclusion: Taken together, these results suggest that GP bio-mass production by cell suspension cultures leads to the accumulation of gypenosides in large amounts, and provides the potential for the recovery of spermatogenesis following heat stress.

Objective: Stem cell therapy in periodontal tissue regeneration has reported optimistic regenerative results; evidence supporting its superiority over conventional methods is still ambiguous. Therefore, this meta-analysis aims to evaluate the therapeutic effects of stem cells in human periodontal regeneration. Design: A literature search was conducted to retrieve relevant articles on periodontal regeneration in stem cell therapy. A meta-analysis of the studies was conducted using the Stata software. Results: Fifteen studies that examined the effect of stem cell therapies on periodontal tissue regeneration in 369 patients were selected from databases. Regardless of the various types of cells, both odontogenic (periodontal ligament, dental pulp, gingiva stem cell) and non-odontogenic (bone marrow, periosteum-derived, and umbilical cord stem cells), the cell therapies witnessed significant improvements in terms of clinical attachment level (SMD, -0.67; 95CI, -0.90 to -0.43), probing depth (SMD, -0.76; 95% CI, -1.21 to - 0.31), radiographic intrabony defect depth (SMD, -0.87; 95% CI, -1.52 to -0.23), and histomorphometric analysis of mineralized bone (SMD, 0.80; 95% CI, 0.42 to 1.19) when compared to traditional without-cell treatment in patients. However, evidence on gingival recession, alveolar thickness gain, bone mineral density of bone core, and bone volume fraction of bone core outcomes did not reach statistical significance. Conclusions: Evidence suggests that the implementation of stem cell therapies in reconstructing compromised gingiva and alveolar bone tissue produces positive outcomes compared with conventional approaches. However, further well-designed investigations are needed to comprehensively identify the most effective source of cells and biomaterials for each case.

OBJECTIVES: Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) and bone marrow mononuclear cells are potential scaffolds and cell sources for osteochondral regeneration. The main aim of this paper is to examine the effects of PRF scaffolds and autologous uncultured bone marrow mononuclear cells on osteochondral regeneration in rabbit knees. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three different types of PRF scaffolds were generated from peripheral blood (Ch-PRF and L-PRF) and bone marrow combined with uncultured bone marrow mononuclear cells (BMM-PRF). The histological characteristics of these scaffolds were assessed via hematoxylin-eosin staining, PicroSirius red staining, and immunohistochemical staining. Osteochondral defects with a diameter of 3 mm and depth of 3 mm were created on the trochlear groove of the rabbit's femur. Different PRF scaffolds were then applied to treat the defects. A group of rabbits with induced osteochondral defects that were not treated with any scaffold was used as a control. Osteochondral tissue regeneration was assessed after 2, 4, and 6 weeks by macroscopy (using the Internal Cartilage Repair Society score, X-ray) and microscopy (hematoxylin-eosin stain, safranin O stain, toluidine stain, and Wakitani histological scale, immunohistochemistry), in addition to gene expression analysis of osteochondral markers. RESULTS: Ch-PRF had a heterogeneous fibrin network structure and cellular population; L-PRF and BMM-PRF had a homogeneous structure with a uniform distribution of the fibrin network. Ch-PRF and L-PRF contained a population of CD45-positive leukocytes embedded in the fibrin network, while mononuclear cells in the BMM-PRF scaffold were positive for the pluripotent stem cell-specific antibody Oct-4. In comparison to the untreated group, the rabbits that were given the autologous graft displayed significantly improved healing of the articular cartilage tissue and of the subchondral bone. Regeneration was gradually observed after 2, 4, and 6 weeks of PRF scaffold treatment, which was particularly evident in the BMM-PRF group. CONCLUSIONS: The combination of biomaterials with autologous platelet-rich fibrin and uncultured bone marrow mononuclear cells promoted osteochondral regeneration in a rabbit model more than platelet-rich fibrin material alone. Our results indicate that autologous platelet-rich fibrin scaffolds combined with uncultured bone marrow mononuclear cells applied in healing osteochondral lesions may represent a suitable treatment in addition to stem cell and biomaterial therapy.

Background: Extranodal non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) is more prevalent in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract than in other sites. This study aimed to determine the endoscopic characteristics of primary gastrointestinal non-Hodgkin lymphomas. Methods: We investigated 140 patients from three tertiary referral hospitals with primary malignant lymphoma of the gastrointestinal tract. Characteristics of the lesions were evaluated and analyzed using image-enhanced endoscopy, endoscopic ultrasound, and histopathology. Results: The median age was 60.5 (range: 11-99), and 59 (42.1%) were female. The most frequent complaint was abdominal pain (74.3%), followed by bloody feces (10%) and diarrhea (2.9%). B symptoms were observed in 15 (10.7%) patients. GI obstruction was the most common complication (10.0%), followed by hemorrhage (7.9%) and perforation (1.5%). Regarding endoscopic findings, the identified sites were the following: the stomach (61.4%), colon (10%), small intestine (10%), ileocecum (8.6%), rectum (6.4%), and duodenum (3.6%). Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma are most prevalent in the stomach. Helicobacter pylori was identified in 46 cases (39.0%), with MALT lymphoma being the most infected subtype. Nearly all gastrointestinal non-Hodgkin lymphomas manifested as superficial type (25-59.6%) and ulcer type (15.6-50%) under endoscopy. We found that fungating type and protruding with ulcer type were more frequent types of aggressive lymphomas (diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, mantle cell lymphoma, and T-cell lymphoma) compared to the indolent types (MALT lymphoma, follicular lymphoma, duodenal-type follicular lymphoma, and small lymphocytic lymphoma) (p < 0.05). Conclusions: This study showed that most subtypes of gastrointestinal non-Hodgkin lymphomas exhibited same endoscopic features (superficial type and ulcer type). Aggressive gastrointestinal non-Hodgkin lymphomas (diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, mantle cell lymphoma, and T-cell lymphoma) were highly suspected when fungating lesions and protruding with ulcer lesions were encountered under endoscopy. Endoscopists should be aware of the connection between enhanced endoscopic characteristics and histological varieties of gastrointestinal lymphoma to improve diagnosis.

Floating treatment wetlands (FTW) are nature-based solutions for the purification of open water systems such as rivers, ponds, and lakes polluted by diffuse sources as untreated or partially treated domestic wastewater and agricultural run-off. Compared with other physicochemical and biological technologies, FTW is a technology with low-cost, simple configuration, easy to operate; has a relatively high efficiency, and is energy-saving, and aesthetic. Water remediation in FTWs is supported by plant uptake and the growth of a biofilm on the water plant roots, so the selection of the macrophyte species is critical, not only to pollutant removal but also to the local ecosystem integrity, especially for full-scale implementation. The key factors such as buoyant frame/raft, plant growth support media, water depth, seasonal variation, and temperature have a considerable role in the design, operation, maintenance, and pollutant treatment performance of FTW. Harvesting is a necessary process to maintain efficient operation by limiting the re-pollution of plants in the decay phase. Furthermore, the harvested plant biomass can serve as a green source for the recovery of energy and value-added products.
