RESUMEN

The dispersive sweep of fast radio bursts (FRBs) has been used to probe the ionized baryon content of the intergalactic medium1, which is assumed to dominate the total extragalactic dispersion. Although the host-galaxy contributions to the dispersion measure appear to be small for most FRBs2, in at least one case there is evidence for an extreme magneto-ionic local environment3,4 and a compact persistent radio source5. Here we report the detection and localization of the repeating FRB 20190520B, which is co-located with a compact, persistent radio source and associated with a dwarf host galaxy of high specific-star-formation rate at a redshift of 0.241 ± 0.001. The estimated host-galaxy dispersion measure of approximately [Formula: see text] parsecs per cubic centimetre, which is nearly an order of magnitude higher than the average of FRB host galaxies2,6, far exceeds the dispersion-measure contribution of the intergalactic medium. Caution is thus warranted in inferring redshifts for FRBs without accurate host-galaxy identifications.

RESUMEN

Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are highly dispersed, millisecond-duration radio bursts1-3. Recent observations of a Galactic FRB4-8 suggest that at least some FRBs originate from magnetars, but the origin of cosmological FRBs is still not settled. Here we report the detection of 1,863 bursts in 82 h over 54 days from the repeating source FRB 20201124A (ref. 9). These observations show irregular short-time variation of the Faraday rotation measure (RM), which scrutinizes the density-weighted line-of-sight magnetic field strength, of individual bursts during the first 36 days, followed by a constant RM. We detected circular polarization in more than half of the burst sample, including one burst reaching a high fractional circular polarization of 75%. Oscillations in fractional linear and circular polarizations, as well as polarization angle as a function of wavelength, were detected. All of these features provide evidence for a complicated, dynamically evolving, magnetized immediate environment within about an astronomical unit (AU; Earth-Sun distance) of the source. Our optical observations of its Milky-Way-sized, metal-rich host galaxy10-12 show a barred spiral, with the FRB source residing in a low-stellar-density interarm region at an intermediate galactocentric distance. This environment is inconsistent with a young magnetar engine formed during an extreme explosion of a massive star that resulted in a long gamma-ray burst or superluminous supernova.

RESUMEN

The event rate, energy distribution and time-domain behaviour of repeating fast radio bursts (FRBs) contain essential information regarding their physical nature and central engine, which are as yet unknown1,2. As the first precisely localized source, FRB 121102 (refs. 3-5) has been extensively observed and shows non-Poisson clustering of bursts over time and a power-law energy distribution6-8. However, the extent of the energy distribution towards the fainter end was not known. Here we report the detection of 1,652 independent bursts with a peak burst rate of 122 h-1, in 59.5 hours spanning 47 days. A peak in the isotropic equivalent energy distribution is found to be approximately 4.8 × 1037 erg at 1.25 GHz, below which the detection of bursts is suppressed. The burst energy distribution is bimodal, and well characterized by a combination of a log-normal function and a generalized Cauchy function. The large number of bursts in hour-long spans allows sensitive periodicity searches between 1 ms and 1,000 s. The non-detection of any periodicity or quasi-periodicity poses challenges for models involving a single rotating compact object. The high burst rate also implies that FRBs must be generated with a high radiative efficiency, disfavouring emission mechanisms with large energy requirements or contrived triggering conditions.

RESUMEN

Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are millisecond-duration radio transients of unknown physical origin observed at extragalactic distances1-3. It has long been speculated that magnetars are the engine powering repeating bursts from FRB sources4-13, but no convincing evidence has been collected so far14. Recently, the Galactic magnetar SRG 1935+2154 entered an active phase by emitting intense soft γ-ray bursts15. One FRB-like event with two peaks (FRB 200428) and a luminosity slightly lower than the faintest extragalactic FRBs was detected from the source, in association with a soft γ-ray/hard-X-ray flare18-21. Here we report an eight-hour targeted radio observational campaign comprising four sessions and assisted by multi-wavelength (optical and hard-X-ray) data. During the third session, 29 soft-γ-ray repeater (SGR) bursts were detected in γ-ray energies. Throughout the observing period, we detected no single dispersed pulsed emission coincident with the arrivals of SGR bursts, but unfortunately we were not observing when the FRB was detected. The non-detection places a fluence upper limit that is eight orders of magnitude lower than the fluence of FRB 200428. Our results suggest that FRB-SGR burst associations are rare. FRBs may be highly relativistic and geometrically beamed, or FRB-like events associated with SGR bursts may have narrow spectra and characteristic frequencies outside the observed band. It is also possible that the physical conditions required to achieve coherent radiation in SGR bursts are difficult to satisfy, and that only under extreme conditions could an FRB be associated with an SGR burst.

RESUMEN

Regarding the limited information on species protein differences between sheep, goat, and cow milk, the differentially expressed proteins in sheep, goat, and cow milk and their functional differences are analyzed using label-free proteomics technology to identify potential biomarkers. 770 proteins and 2914 peptide segments were identified. The statistical analysis showed significant differences in the relative abundances of the 74 proteins among the sheep, goat, and cow milk. CSN3 and LALBA can be used as potential biomarkers for goat milk, XDH can be used as potential biomarkers for cow milk, and CTSB and BPIFB1 can be used as potential biomarkers for sheep milk. The functional analysis using Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes showed that these significantly different proteins were enriched by different pathways including thyroid hormone synthesis and glycerol phospholipid metabolism. The data revealed differences in the amounts and physiological functions of the milk proteins of different species, which may provide an important basis for research on the nutritional composition of dairy products and adulteration identification technology.

RESUMEN

In recent years, deep brain stimulation has been widely used in the treatment of various difficult diseases of the nervous system. The rapid development of machine learning algorithms has greatly promoted the application and development of deep brain stimulation. Machine learning can help in preoperative screening of surgical candidates, outcome prediction and surgical planning. It can assist target localization during operation. More importantly, the local field potential signals recorded by macroscopic electrodes can be analyzed in real time after surgery, which provides a basis for the development of a closed-loop stimulation system. Of course, the application of machine learning also has its limitations and challenges, such as dimensionality reduction of high-dimensional data, development and validation of new models and etc, which need to be further explored and improved.

RESUMEN

Objective: To analyze the imaging changes of in the early period after subthalamic nucleus (STN) deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery for Parkinson's disease (PD) and its impact on electrode impedance by the application of 3.0T MRI-compatible devices. Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed for the data of 43 PD patients who underwent 3.0T MRI-compatible STN-DBS surgery from October 2022 to April 2023 at the First Affiliated Hospital of USTC(Anhui Provincial Hospital), including 27 males and 16 females, aged 43-68 (56±5) years. All patients underwent postoperative 3.0T MRI, CT scans, and impedance measurements 1 week postoperatively.Fifteen patients underwent 3.0T MRI and impedance measurements 1 month postoperatively. The differences in impedance of electrode contacts before and after the 3.0T MRI scans were compared. The occurrence of peri-lead cerebral edema (PLE) in patients was analyzed, as well as the differences in PLE detection rates between the two imaging methods, and the differences in the incidence and volume of PLE at different microelectrode recordings, the occurrence and detection of postoperative PLE, and different microelectrode recording (MER) times and different time nodes were compared. The correlation between electrode impedance and the volume of edema around the nucleus was analyzed. Results: All 43 patients successfully underwent surgery, with a total of 86 electrodes implanted. There was no significant difference in electrode impedance values before and after the 3.0T MRI examinations at 1 week and 1 month postoperatively. The PLE detection rate with 3.0T MRI was 95.12%(39/43), which is significantly higher than that of CT imaging 17.07% (7/43)(χ2=50.705, P<0.001). One week after surgery, the incidence and volume of PLE were higher in the multiple MER group compared with the single MER group, but the difference was not statistically significant. The volume of PLE [M(Q1, Q3) 0 (0, 1.211) cm3] at 1 month was significantly smaller than that at 1 week [0.243 (0, 2.914) cm3] (Z=-3.408, P=0.001). The impedance of electrode contacts within 1 month postoperatively showed a trend of initial decrease followed by an increase, which was negatively correlated with SE volume(r=-0.317, P=0.014). Conclusions: The application of 3.0T MRI-compatible DBS devices in the surgical treatment of PD patients improves the accuracy of early postoperative imaging assessment. The electrode impedance is more stable as the edema around the nucleus subsided at 1 month after surgery, which is suitable for the first program control.

RESUMEN

Objective: To analyze the complications related to deep brain stimulation(DBS) surgery in Parkinson's disease(PD) patients and to determine whether there is a learning curve effect in terms of complications. Methods: Retrospective analysis of the DBS surgical data of 822 PD patients performed by the same surgeon at the First Affiliated Hospital of the University of Science and Technology of China (Anhui Provincial Hospital) from December 2012 to December 2022. The complications related to DBS were evaluated and analyzed the complications of every 100 DBS surgery were further analyzed. Results: A total of 822 PD patients, 453 males and 369 females, aged 31-80 years old, were included. The minimum follow-up period after DBS surgery is 6 months. Surgical related complications occurred in 55 patients (6.69%), including 5 patients (0.61%) with slight bleeding around the electrode, 1 patient (0.12%) with cerebral infarction, 4 patients (0.49%) with postoperative epilepsy, 42 patients (5.11%) with postoperative delirium, 2 patients (0.24%) with respiratory distress, and 1 patient (0.12%) with acute cardiac insufficiency. There were 16 cases (1.94%) of hardware related complications in DBS, of which 4 cases (0.48%) had infection, 1 case (0.12%) had a broken angle at the connection between the pulse generator and the extension wire, 8 cases (0.97%) had an excessively tight extension wire, and 3 cases (0.36%) had an IPG bag hematoma. In the infected cases, 2 patients removed IPG and extension wires. There were 7 cases (0.85%) of stimulus related complications, including 4 cases (0.61%) with programmed sensory abnormalities, 1 case (0.12%) with postoperative abnormal movements and dance like movements, and 2 cases (0.24%) with psychiatric symptoms. A comprehensive analysis was conducted on the above complications, among which 8 cases (0.97%) were relatively serious complications. After active treatment, satisfactory results were achieved, and none of them affected the patient's DBS treatment effect and no patients died. For every 100 cases of DBS surgery complications were analyzed, the percentage of complications decreased significantly from 14.50% (58 cases) in the first 400 cases to 4.73% (20 cases) in the last 400 cases (P<0.001). Conclusion: DBS surgery is safe and has an acceptable low incidence of complications. The incidence of complications also decreases with the accumulation of experience, showing a learning curve effect.

RESUMEN

Objective: To examine the feasibility, safety, and efficacy of mobilization of the vertebral artery for C2 pedicle screws in cases with high-riding vertebral artery (HRVA). Methods: The clinical data of 12 patients with basilar invagination and atlantoaxial dislocation underwent atlantoaxial reduction and fixation in the Department of Neurosurgery, the First Affiliated Hospital of University of Science and Technology of China between January 2020 and November 2021 were retrospectively analyzed. All patients had high-riding vertebral artery on at least one side that prohibited the insertion of C2 pedicle screws. There were 2 males and 10 females aged (48.0±12.8) years (range: 17 to 67 years). After correction of vertical dislocation during the operation, the C2 pedicle screw insertion and occipitocervical fixation and fusion were performed using the vertebral artery mobilization technique. Neurological function was assessed using the Japanese Orthopedic Association (JOA) scale. The preoperative and postoperative JOA score and the main radiological measurements, including the anterior atlantodental interval (ADI), the distance of the odontoid tip above the Chamberlain line, the clivus-canal angle, were collected and compared by paired t-test. Results: Mobilization of the high-riding vertebral artery was successfully completed, and C2 pedicle screws were then fulfilled after the vertebral artery was protected. There was no injury to the vertebral artery during the operation. Meanwhile, no severe surgical complications such as cerebral infarction or aggravated neurological dysfunction occurred during the perioperative period. Satisfactory C2 pedicle screw placement and reduction were achieved in all 12 patients. All patients achieved bone fusion 6 months after surgery. No looseness and shift in internal fixation or reduction loss was observed during the follow-up period. Compared to the preoperative, the postoperative ADI decreased from (6.1±1.9) mm to (2.0±1.2) mm (t=6.73, P<0.01), the distance of the odontoid tip above the Chamberlain line decreased from (10.4±2.5) mm to (5.5±2.3) mm (t=7.12, P<0.01), the clivus-canal angle increased from (123.4±11.1) ° to (134.7±9.6) ° (t=2.50, P=0.032), the JOA score increased from 13.3±2.1 to 15.6±1.2 (t=6.99, P<0.01). Conclusion: The C2 pedicle screw insertion assisted by mobilization of the vertebral artery is safe and considerably effective, providing a choice for internal fixation in cases with high-riding vertebral arteries.

RESUMEN

Objective: To assess the risk of foodborne diseases caused by Cronobacter sakazakii in infant formula powder from retail to feeding and provide formulate suggestions for safe feeding of infants at home. Methods: This study used the special monitoring and risk monitoring data of infant formula powder in Heilongjiang Province and combined data at home and abroad. The @RISK software was used to evaluate the disease risk caused by Cronobacter sakazakii in the process of infant formula powder from retail to feeding. Results: According to the results of this quantitative risk assessment, the risk of foodborne diseases caused by Cronobacter sakazakii at the current consumption pattern in Heilongjiang Province was 5.158×10-5 persons/million (40.0 ℃ and 50.0 ℃), 1.072×10-7 persons/million (60.0 ℃), 5.544×10-14 persons/million (70.0 ℃). When the feeding time of infant formula powder was adjusted to 0-2 h and 2-3 h respectively, the above prediction results did not change. When it was adjusted to 3-4 h, the risk increased. If it was adjusted to 4-24 h, the number of Cronobacter sakazakii increased by 14-24 orders of magnitude at room temperature. If the initial pollution concentration (after flushing) was adjusted to 1 MPN/ml, the average disease risk per meal was 805.7 persons/million (40.0 ℃ and 50.0 ℃), 1.7 persons/million (60.0 ℃) and 9.1 × 10-7 persons/million (70.0 ℃). The results of sensitivity analysis showed that the water temperature (70.0 ℃), initial pollution concentration, room storage time and temperature were important factors of risk. Conclusion: Controlling the contamination level of Cronobacter sakazakii in infant formula powder, controlling the feeding time within 3 h, storing in refrigerator and mixing with water with temperature not lower than 70.0 ℃ are effective measures to prevent infants from eating infant formula powder infected by Cronobacter sakazakii.

RESUMEN

^{18}Mg was observed, for the first time, by the invariant-mass reconstruction of ^{14}O+4p events. The ground-state decay energy and width are E_{T}=4.865(34) MeV and Γ=115(100) keV, respectively. The observed momentum correlations between the five particles are consistent with two sequential steps of prompt 2p decay passing through the ground state of ^{16}Ne. The invariant-mass spectrum also provides evidence for an excited state at an excitation energy of 1.84(14) MeV, which is likely the first excited 2^{+} state. As this energy exceeds that for the 2^{+} state in ^{20}Mg, this observation provides an argument for the demise of the N=8 shell closure in nuclei far from stability. However, in open systems this classical argument for shell strength is compromised by Thomas-Ehrman shifts.

RESUMEN

Objective: To study the effect of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) on free fatty acid (FFA)-induced hepatocyte steatosis, and to explore its autophagic role in this process. Methods: Human hepatocytes were cultured in vitro to induce NAFLD cell model. Liraglutide (LRG) concentration gradient was added to observe the effect on cell survival rate and fatty degeneration of liver cells. The relationship between liraglutide and autophagy was investigated with chloroquine inhibition and rapamycin (RAPA) activation in hepatocyte steatosis. Experimental group: control group: a certain concentration of BSA was added to cells cultured in DMEM complete medium; FFA model group: fatty degeneration of hepatocytes was induced by 1mmol/L FFA (OA : PA=2 : 1); LRG group: FFA (1 mmol/L) and LRG (100 nmol/L) were added to the cells at the same time; autophagy inhibition group: FFA (1 mmol/L), LRG (100 nmol/L), and chloroquine (20 µmol/L) were added to the cells at the same time; autophagy activated group: FFA (1 mmol/L) and RAPA (1 µmol/L) were added to the cells at the same time. Oil red O staining and fully automated biochemistry analyzer were used to observe the intracellular lipidosis condition. Western blotting was used to detect the levels of autophagy-related proteins (Beclin1, P62, and LC3B). One-way analysis of variance was used to compare the means between multiple groups. Results: Within a certain concentration range, with the increase of LRG concentration, the hepatocytes survival rate was increased and the degree of intracellular lipidosis had continued to decrease. The best effect was achieved when LRG concentration reached 100nmol/L, and the difference was statistically significant when compared with the FFA group (P < 0.01). During the exploration of the relationship between the degree of hepatic steatosis and autophagy, LRG group intracellular triglyceride content was significantly lower than FFA group (P < 0.01), and the levels of Beclin1, LC3B-II/LC3B-I were higher than FFA group. Additionally, FFA group had reduced P62 level, and enhanced autophagy. Compared with the LRG group, autophagy inhibition group intracellular triglyceride content was increased (P < 0.01), while the levels of Beclin1, LC3B-II/LC3B-I was decreased, and P62 level was increased. Autophagy activated group RAPA had significantly reduced FFA-induced intrahepatic triglyceride deposition, and the changes in autophagy-related protein levels were consistent with the effect of LRG. Conclusion: GLP-1RAs can alleviates FFA-induced lipotoxic liver cell damage, and promote autophagy to improve fatty degeneration of hepatocytes in NAFLD.

RESUMEN

Objective: To examine the application value of alternative pancreatic fistula risk score system(a-FRS) for patients with clinically relevant postoperative pancreatic fistula(CR-POPF) after laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy(LPD). Methods: Clinical data of 400 patients who underwent LPD at Department of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery,Jilin University First Hospital, from April 2015 to August 2019 were retrospectively analyzed. There were 217 males and 183 females, with age of (M(QR)) 58 (53) years (range:26 to 93 years) and body mass index of (23.0±2.7) kg/m2 (range:19.4 to 27.1 kg/m2).Preoperative CA19-9 was (171.6±212.7) U/ml (range:32.1 to 762.6 U/ml), and preoperative CA125 was (18.6±22.9) U/ml (range:9.0 to 112.3 U/ml).Univariate analysis and multivariate Logistic regression analysis were implemented to find independent risk factors in CR-POPF.According to 3 indicators of a-FRS system(pancreatic texture, main pancreatic duct diameter, and body mass index),receiver operator characteristic curve was used to prospectively analyze the clinical value of CR-POPF. Results: CR-POPF occurred in 60 patients(15.0%) among the 400 LPD patients, including 54 patients(13.5%) with grade B pancreatic fistula and 6 patients(1.5%) with grade C pancreatic fistula.Univariate and multivariate Logistic regression analysis results showed that soft pancreas, diameter of main pancreatic duct ≤3 mm,and body mass index>23 kg/m2 were the independent risk factors for CR-POPF after LPD.The incidence of CR-POPF was 1.9% in the group with low pancreatic fistula risk(0 to 5%),5.9% with moderate pancreatic fistula risk(>5% to 20%),and 80.7% with high pancreatic fistula risk(>20%).a-FRS prospectively predicted the sensitivity and specificity of CR-POPF after LPD was 76.7% and 96.8%,positive predictive value was 80.7%,negative predictive value was 95.9%,positive likelihood ratio was 23.66,negative likelihood ratio was 0.24,and area under the curve was 0.735(95%CI:0.668-0.799). Conclusion: a-FRS system has great clinical application value in predicting CR-POPF after LPD,which can provide basis for early risk prediction of CR-POPF and timely related clinical intervention.

RESUMEN

To investigate the clinical manifestations and risk factors in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and cancers. From October 2010 to February 2019, 5 566 SLE patients hospitalized in the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University were enrolled. A total of 69 cancer patients were identified, and the clinical characteristics and previous treatment were analyzed. Cervical carcinoma (21.74%, 15/69) and thyroid cancer (21.74%, 15/69) were the most common types of cancer. Most cancers were diagnosed in SLE patients with an age 40~50 years. The disease duration of SLE was from 60~120 months. SLE patients without cancers were usually diagnosed between 20~30 years with duration of symptoms less than 12 months. As to the previous treatment of SLE, the uses of glucocorticoid, cyclophosphamide, methotrexate and azathioprine were comparable between patients with cancers and without (P>0.05). However, the use of hydroxychloroquine was more frequent in SLE patients than in patients with cancers (P<0.01). Correlation analysis revealed significant correlation between disease course of SLE (OR=4.25, 95%CI 1.79~10.01,P<0.001), hydroxychloroquine (OR=0.26, 95%CI 0.12~0.59,P<0.001) and cancer risk. Long disease course may be a risk factor for SLE patients to develop cancer, whereas hydroxychloroquine could be a protective factor.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: MicroRNA (miRNA)107 expression is downregulated but high mobility group box 1 (HMGB-1), Toll-like receptors (TLRs), and receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) are upregulated in osteoarthritic (OA) cartilage. We investigated mir-107/HMGB-1 signaling in OA after hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) treatment. DESIGN: MiR-107 mimic was transfected and the HMGB-1 was analyzed in OA chondrocytes. MiRNA targets were identified using bioinformatics and a luciferase reporter assay. After HBO treatment, the mRNA or protein levels of HMGB-1, RAGE, TLR2, TLR4, and inducible nitric oxide (NO) synthase (iNOS) and phosphorylation of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) were evaluated. The secreted HMGB-1 and matrix metalloproteases (MMPs) levels were quantified. Finally, we detected the HMGB-1 and iNOS expression in rabbit cartilage defects. RESULTS: Overexpression of miR-107 suppressed HMGB-1 expression in OA chondrocytes. The 3'UTR of HMGB-1 mRNA contained a 'seed-matched-sequence' for miR-107. MiR-107 was induced by HBO and a marked suppression of HMGB-1 was observed simultaneously in OA chondrocytes. Knockdown of miR-107 upregulated HMGB-1 expression in hyperoxic cells. HBO downregulated the mRNA and protein expression of HMGB-1, RAGE, TLR2, TLR4, and iNOS, and the secretion of HMGB-1. HBO decreased the nuclear translocation of nuclear factor (NF)-κB, downregulated the phosphorylation of MAPK, and significantly decreased the secretion of MMPs. Morphological and immunohistochemical observation demonstrated that HBO markedly enhanced cartilage repair and the area stained positive for HMGB-1 and iNOS tended to be lower in the HBO group. CONCLUSIONS: HBO inhibits HMGB-1/RAGE signaling related pathways by upregulating miR-107 expression in human OA chondrocytes.

RESUMEN

The ß-delayed γ-ray spectroscopy of neutron-rich ^{123,125}Ag isotopes is investigated at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory of RIKEN, and the long-predicted 1/2^{-} ß-emitting isomers in ^{123,125}Ag are identified for the first time. With the new experimental results, the systematic trend of energy spacing between the lowest 9/2^{+} and 1/2^{-} levels is extended in Ag isotopes up to N=78, providing a clear signal for the reduction of the Z=40 subshell gap in Ag towards N=82. Shell-model calculations with the state-of-the-art V_{MU} plus M3Y spin-orbit interaction give a satisfactory description of the low-lying states in ^{123,125}Ag. The tensor force is found to play a crucial role in the evolution of the size of the Z=40 subshell gap. The observed inversion of the single-particle levels around ^{123}Ag can be well interpreted in terms of the monopole shift of the π1g_{9/2} orbitals mainly caused by the increasing occupation of ν1h_{11/2} orbitals.

RESUMEN

T-box transcription factor T (TBXT), encoding the brachyury protein, is an embryonic nuclear transcription factor involved in mesoderm formation and differentiation. Previous studies indicate that TBXT mutations are responsible for the tailless or short-tailed phenotype of many vertebrates. To verify whether the tailless phenotype in fat-rumped sheep is associated with TBXT mutations, exon 2 of the TBXT gene for 301 individuals belonging to 13 Chinese and Iranian sheep breeds was directly sequenced. Meanwhile, 380 samples were used to detect the genotypes of the candidate variations by mapping to their reads databases in the Sequence Read Archive repository of GenBank. The results showed that one missense mutation, c.334G>T (GGG>TGG) with a completely linked synonymous variant c.333G>C (CCG>CCC) was found to be associated with the 'tailless' characteristic in typical fat-rumped sheep breeds. The c.334G>T transversion led to the conversion of glycine to tryptophan at the 112th amino acid in the T-box domain of the brachyury protein. In addition, crossbreeding experiments for long-tailed and tailless sheep showed that CT/CT allele of nucleotides (nt) 333 and 334, a recessive mutation, would cause sheep tails to be shorter, suggesting that these two linked variants at nucleotides 333 and 334 in TBXT are probably causative mutations responsible for the tailless phenotype in sheep.
