RESUMEN

Oceanic island floras are well known for their morphological peculiarities and exhibit striking examples of trait evolution1-3. These morphological shifts are commonly attributed to insularity and are thought to be shaped by the biogeographical processes and evolutionary histories of oceanic islands2,4. However, the mechanisms through which biogeography and evolution have shaped the distribution and diversity of plant functional traits remain unclear5. Here we describe the functional trait space of the native flora of an oceanic island (Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain) using extensive field and laboratory measurements, and relate it to global trade-offs in ecological strategies. We find that the island trait space exhibits a remarkable functional richness but that most plants are concentrated around a functional hotspot dominated by shrubs with a conservative life-history strategy. By dividing the island flora into species groups associated with distinct biogeographical distributions and diversification histories, our results also suggest that colonization via long-distance dispersal and the interplay between inter-island dispersal and archipelago-level speciation processes drive functional divergence and trait space expansion. Contrary to our expectations, speciation via cladogenesis has led to functional convergence, and therefore only contributes marginally to functional diversity by densely packing trait space around shrubs. By combining biogeography, ecology and evolution, our approach opens new avenues for trait-based insights into how dispersal, speciation and persistence shape the assembly of entire native island floras.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effect of an injection of botulinum toxin A (BoNT/A) at the epicenter of the spinal cord injury (SCI) site on the recovery of lower urinary tract function in female rats with thoracic SCI. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-four female Wistar rats with Sham (laminectomy at T8/T9 level) or SCI (at T8/T9; 30 g compression for 5 s) were assigned into Sham-SS (injected with 5 µL of saline solution), Sham-BoNT/A (injected with 15 pg/rat, equivalent to 7.5 Units/kg of BoNT/A in 5 µL volume), SCI-SS (injured and injected with saline), SCI-BoNT/A (injured and injected with BoNT/A), N = 6 per group. Weekly evaluation of stereotyped micturition behavior, hind-limb nociception, and locomotor activity was performed 1 week before and during 6 weeks after surgery. Subsequently, all groups underwent simultaneous electromyography of the external urethral sphincter (EUS-EMG) and cystometric (CMG) studies. RESULTS: A compression SCI at the T8/T9 thoracic level significantly impairs sensory and locomotive functions, as well as stereotyped micturition behavior. However, these impairments were improved by BoNT/A injection after SCI. Neither injections of saline solution nor BoNT/A had an appreciable effect on the same parameters evaluated in the Sham groups. The combined EUS-EMG and CMG evaluations revealed important improvements of lower urinary tract physiology, particularly a reduction in the frequency of non-voiding contractions and the properties of EUS bursting activity indicated as the amplitude of the EUS-EMG signal and duration of burst electrical activity during effective voiding. CONCLUSION: The severe impairments on sensory and locomotive functions as well stereotyped micturition caused by an SCI could be potentially attenuated by an injection of a small amount of BoNT/A directly into the epicenter of the SCI region. A reduction in the release of neurotoxic neurotransmitters requiring the SNARE complex may be the mechanism triggered by BoNT/A to reduce neurotoxicity and hyperexcitability created in the SCI area to improve the survival of spinal cord cells involved in micturition.

The extinction of iconic species such as the dodo and the deforestation of Easter Island are emblematic of the transformative impact of human colonization of many oceanic islands, especially those in the tropics and subtropics. Yet, the interaction of prehistoric and colonial-era colonists with the forests and forest resources they encountered can be complex, varies between islands, and remains poorly understood. Long-term ecological records (e.g., fossil pollen) provide the means to understand these human impacts in relation to natural change and variability pre- and postcolonization. Here we analyze paleoecological archives in forested landscapes of the Canary Islands and Cabo Verde, first colonized approximately 2,400 to 2,000 and 490 y ago, respectively. We demonstrate sensitivity to regional climate change prior to human colonization, followed by divergent but gradual impacts of early human settlement. These contrast with more rapid transformation in the colonial era, associated with significant increases in anthropogenic pressures. In the Canary Islands, at least two native tree taxa became extinct and lowland thermophilous woodlands were largely converted to agricultural land, yet relictual subtropical laurel forests persisted with limited incursion of nonnative species. In Cabo Verde, in contrast, thermophilous woodlands were depleted and substituted by open landscapes and introduced woodlands. Differences between these two archipelagos reflect the changing cultural practices and societal interactions with forests and illustrate the importance of long-term data series in understanding the human footprint on island ecosystems, information that will be critically important for current and future forest restoration and conservation management practices in these two biodiversity hotspots.

Respiratory diseases in ruminants are a main cause of economic losses to farmers worldwide. Approximately 25% of ruminants experience at least one episode of respiratory disease during the first year of life. Mannheimia haemolytica is the main etiological bacterial agent in the ruminant respiratory disease complex. M. haemolytica can secrete several virulence factors, such as leukotoxin, lipopolysaccharide, and proteases, that can be targeted to treat infections. At present, little information has been reported on the secretion of M. haemolytica A2 proteases and their host protein targets. Here, we obtained evidence that M. haemolytica A2 proteases promote the degradation of hemoglobin, holo-lactoferrin, albumin, and fibrinogen. Additionally, we performed biochemical characterization for a specific 110 kDa Zn-dependent metalloprotease (110-Mh metalloprotease). This metalloprotease was purified through ion exchange chromatography and characterized using denaturing and chaotropic agents and through zymography assays. Furthermore, mass spectrometry identification and 3D modeling were performed. Then, antibodies against the 110 kDa-Mh metalloprotease were produced, which achieved great inhibition of proteolytic activity. Finally, the antibodies were used to perform immunohistochemical tests on postmortem lung samples from sheep with suggestive histology data of pneumonic mannheimiosis. Taken together, our results strongly suggest that the 110-Mh metalloprotease participates as a virulence mechanism that promotes damage to host tissues.

Current models of island biogeography treat endemic and non-endemic species as if they were functionally equivalent, focussing primarily on species richness. Thus, the functional composition of island biotas in relation to island biogeographical variables remains largely unknown. Using plant trait data (plant height, leaf area and flower length) for 895 native species in the Canary Islands, we related functional trait distinctiveness and climate rarity for endemic and non-endemic species and island ages. Endemics showed a link to climatically rare conditions that is consistent with island geological change through time. However, functional trait distinctiveness did not differ between endemics and non-endemics and remained constant with island age. Thus, there is no obvious link between trait distinctiveness and occupancy of rare climates, at least for the traits measured here, suggesting that treating endemic and non-endemic species as functionally equivalent in island biogeography is not fundamentally wrong.

Human-mediated changes in island vegetation are, among others, largely caused by the introduction and establishment of non-native species. However, data on past changes in non-native plant species abundance that predate historical documentation and censuses are scarce. Islands are among the few places where we can track human arrival in natural systems allowing us to reveal changes in vegetation dynamics with the arrival of non-native species. We matched fossil pollen data with botanical status information (native, non-native), and quantified the timing, trajectories and magnitude of non-native plant vegetational change on 29 islands over the past 5000 years. We recorded a proportional increase in pollen of non-native plant taxa within the last 1000 years. Individual island trajectories are context-dependent and linked to island settlement histories. Our data show that non-native plant introductions have a longer and more dynamic history than is generally recognized, with critical implications for biodiversity baselines and invasion biology.

Clear cell carcinoma of the ovary (CCC) is one of the five major histological types of ovarian cancer and presents specific clinicopathological features, such as a higher prevalence in the Asian population and a poor response to conventional chemotherapy. In a recent publication in The Journal of Pathology, Heong, Tan, Miwa et al demonstrated the heterogeneity of the immune landscape of CCC. They reported the immune signatures observed in a large cohort of CCC, including tumours from both Asian and Caucasian women. The authors analysed three cohorts from Europe, Japan, and Singapore, with a total of 246 tumours, and evaluated 730 immune-related genes using NanoString technology. The study revealed four main transcriptional subtypes characterised by the expression of specific sets of genes: PD1-high (11%), CTLA4-high (29%), antigen-presentation (42%), and a pro-angiogenic subtype (18%). The two main conclusions of the study were: (1) that CCCs in women of Asian and Caucasian descent share significant molecular similarities, since all four molecular signatures are present in all the cohorts analysed, without any evident differences in frequency; and (2) that the PD1-high and CTLA4-high subtypes were associated with worse clinical outcomes and may be useful when stratifying treatment in early-stage tumours. The immune signature could represent a promising biomarker of immunotherapy response if future prospective studies confirm it. © 2021 The Authors. Thirty-nine aryl azoles, thirteen triazoles and twenty-seven tetrazoles, have been synthetized and biologically evaluated to determine their activity as tumor microenvironment disruptors. Antiproliferative studies have been performed on tumor cell lines HT-29, A-549 and MCF-7 and on non-tumor cell line HEK-293. It has been studied in HT-29 the expression levels of biological targets which are involved in tumor microenvironment processes, such as PD-L1, CD-47, c-Myc and VEGFR-2. In addition, antiproliferative activity was evaluated when HT-29 were co-cultured with THP-1 monocytes and the secretion levels of IL-6 were also determined in these co-cultures. The angiogenesis effect of some selected compounds on HMEC-1 was also evaluated as well as their action against vasculogenic mimicry on HEK-293. Compounds bearing an amino group in the phenyl ring and a halogen atom in the benzyl ring showed promising results as tumor microenvironment disrupting agents. The most outstanding compound decrease dramatically the population of HT-29 cells when co-cultured with THP-1 monocytes and the levels of IL-6 secreted, as well as it showed moderate effects over PD-L1, CD-47 and c-Myc.

The Rhizobium-legume symbiosis is a beneficial interaction in which the bacterium converts atmospheric nitrogen into ammonia and delivers it to the plant in exchange for carbon compounds. This symbiosis implies the adaptation of bacteria to live inside host plant cells. In this work, we apply RP-LC-MS/MS and isobaric tags as relative and absolute quantitation techniques to study the proteomic profile of endosymbiotic cells (bacteroids) induced by Rhizobium leguminosarum bv viciae strain UPM791 in legume nodules. Nitrogenase subunits, tricarboxylic acid cycle enzymes, and stress-response proteins are among the most abundant from over 1000 rhizobial proteins identified in pea (Pisum sativum) bacteroids. Comparative analysis of bacteroids induced in pea and in lentil (Lens culinaris) nodules revealed the existence of a significant host-specific differential response affecting dozens of bacterial proteins, including stress-related proteins, transcriptional regulators, and proteins involved in the carbon and nitrogen metabolisms. A mutant affected in one of these proteins, homologous to a GntR-like transcriptional regulator, showed a symbiotic performance significantly impaired in symbiosis with pea but not with lentil plants. Analysis of the proteomes of bacteroids isolated from both hosts also revealed the presence of different sets of plant-derived nodule-specific cysteine-rich peptides, indicating that the endosymbiotic bacteria find a host-specific cocktail of chemical stressors inside the nodule. By studying variations of the bacterial response to different plant cell environments, we will be able to identify specific limitations imposed by the host that might give us clues for the improvement of rhizobial performance.

OBJECTIVE: Allogeneic cadaveric costal cartilage is commonly used for grafts in nasal reconstruction surgery; however, limited information exists on its use in total ear reconstruction for microtia. In this case series, we describe the novel use of cadaveric cartilage for auricular framework construction in ear reconstruction and review preliminary histologic findings. METHODS: Patients requiring primary complete reconstruction of the auricle from August 2020 to December 2021 were eligible and underwent ear reconstruction using cadaveric costal cartilage. Patients were evaluated for surgical site infection, skin necrosis, cartilage resorption, and cartilage exposure during regular follow-up visits. Two cartilage samples were taken after 2 separate second-stage surgeries done 52 weeks after first-stage reconstruction. These samples were stained with hematoxylin and eosin as well as safranin-O and examined under light microscopy. RESULTS: A total of 12 ear reconstruction procedures using cadaveric costal cartilage were performed across 11 patients; 10 of 12 ears had type III microtia and 2 of 12 ears had type IV microtia. Patients ranged from 4 to 25 years old at the time of surgery, with an average age of 10.7 years. Follow-up time ranged from 1.6 to 25.4 months, with a mean follow-up time of 11.2 months. No patients experienced any visibly significant cartilage warping. Two patients experienced minor construct exposure, which were successfully salvaged. Two patients experienced surgical site infections, one lead to resorption requiring framework replacement. Preliminary histologic analysis of the 2 samples taken 1 year after implantation showed viable chondrocytes with no evidence of immunologic rejection or any local inflammation or host foreign body response. CONCLUSIONS: Cadaveric costal cartilage serves as a viable alternative to autologous cartilage and other alloplastic biomaterials for construction of auricular frameworks in primary microtia reconstruction. Resorption secondary to infection and construct exposure remain potential risks. Longer follow-up times and a larger sample size are needed for assessment of long-term efficacy.

PURPOSE: Non/minimally irradiated Cadaveric Costal Cartilage (NCCC) is commonly used for grafts in nasal reconstruction; however, no information exists on its use in total ear reconstruction for type III microtia. In this case series we describe preliminary results from the novel use of NCCC for auricular framework construction in 7 ear reconstructions. METHODS: Patients requiring total ear reconstruction from August 2020 to October 2021 were eligible and underwent ear reconstruction using NCCC from MTF Biologics (Edison, NJ). Patients were evaluated for surgical site infection, skin necrosis, cartilage exposure, warping, and resorption during regular follow up visits. RESULTS: Seven ears were reconstructed using NCCC across 5 patients with type III microtia. Patients ranged from 5 to 51 years old at the time of surgery. Follow up time ranged from 12 to 78 weeks (mean: 46 wk). No patients experienced surgical site infections or significant cartilage resorption. All procedures were done outpatient, total time under anesthesia was <90 minutes in 5/7 cases and postoperative narcotics for pain management were not needed in 5/7 cases. Complications included minor skin necrosis that was repaired via primary closure, construct exposure in the immediate postoperative period, which was successfully salvaged with a local flap, and explantation of one construct after reconstruction for a complicated revision surgery involving a previous temporoparietal fascial flap. CONCLUSION: NCCC serves as an immediately available alternative to alloplastic and autologous materials for construction of auricular frameworks during ear reconstruction. Longer follow up times and a larger sample size will further elucidate long-term efficacy.

BACKGROUND: Many parents seek otoplasty for their school age children but fear having to undergo general anesthesia (GA). In our experience, otoplasty can safely be performed in an office-based setting under local anesthesia (LA). There is a gap in the literature regarding pediatric otoplasty under LA. METHODS: All children aged 5 to 10 who underwent otoplasty between 2017 and 2021 were included in a retrospective review. Demographics, operative techniques, complications, recurrences, and reoperation rates were collected. Surveys were provided 3 months after treatment to assess parental satisfaction and anxiety. Results were compared between patients who received otoplasty under GA and LA. RESULTS: A total of 13 patients (6 male, 7 female), with a mean age of 7 years (ranging 5-10) underwent otoplasty under LA. Tweleve children (6 male, 6 female), with a mean age of 5 years (ranging 4-7) underwent otoplasty under GA. The only complications seen were 3 minor conchal bowl hematomas that were aspirated, each retrieving <1 mL of blood; no revisions were necessary. The LA subgroup was more likely to repeat otoplasty under identical conditions ( P =0.025). Postoperatively, mean parental anxiety scores between the LA and GA subgroups were significantly different (1.4±1.1 versus 4.8±2.7, P =0.0005). Lastly, the mean satisfaction scores between the LA and GA subgroups were marginally different (3.83±0.58 versus 3.17±1.03, P =0.063). CONCLUSION: Pediatric otoplasty under LA is a safe and feasible operation for patients between 5 and 10 years of age.

BACKGROUND: Facial Hemangiomas are often recommended to be removed exclusively in the operating room under general anesthesia, especially for children under the age of 4. Assumed parental and patient anxiety and possible blood loss pushes surgeons away from attempting excision under local anesthesia. METHODS: A review was conducted to assess the outcomes of children who underwent excision of facial hemangiomas under local anesthesia alone by 1 plastic surgeon with a minimum of 3 months follow-up. Complications and hemangioma recurrence were recorded. A survey was given 3 to 6 months after treatment to assess parental satisfaction, anxiety, and thought process about anesthesia. RESULTS: Eighteen children (9 males and 9 females) underwent in-office excision between 2020 and 2021. The mean age of this cohort was 12 months ( ranging 2-52 m). The average facial hemangioma size was 2.088 cm (ranging 1.0-3.2 cm). Ten patients experienced complete resolution (56%) at 12-month follow-up. There were no hospitalizations or cases of significant (>10 mL) blood loss, infection, dehiscence, hematoma, or scar hypertrophy. The average level of parental anxiety before the procedure was 3.3/10, and 1.6/10 after the procedure. Total 13/14 parents gave 4/4 ratings for satisfaction with the quality of care, team responsiveness, pain management, and management of expectations. CONCLUSIONS: Facial hemangioma removal under local anesthesia alone is a safe and feasible alternative treatment method for patients younger than 4 years of age.

Early stages are under-represented in studies on the molecular and immune features of high-grade serous ovarian carcinoma (HGSOC), and specific studies focused on early-stage HGSOC are required for a better prognostic stratification and to personalize chemotherapy. The aim of this study was to determine the prognostic significance of CD8+ and CD4+ tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs), tumoral cell PD-L1 expression, BRCA mutational status and tumor mutation burden (TMB) in early-stage HGSOC. A retrospective study was performed on stage I and II HGSOC from the Molecular Reclassification of Early Stages of Ovarian Cancer (RECLAMO) cohort from the Spanish Group of Ovarian Cancer Research (GEICO). Centralized histological typing was performed based on morphological and immunohistochemical features. Intraepithelial (i) and stromal (s) CD8+ and CD4+ T cells and PD-L1 were evaluated on tissue microarrays by immunohistochemistry. BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation status and TMB were analyzed in tumor DNA using next-generation sequencing. The study included 124 tumors. High iCD8+ (>20 TILs/core), low/intermediate CD4+ (<20 TILs/core) and high CD8+/CD4+ ratio (>35/core) were associated with favorable outcomes. Tumor cell PD-L1 expression (TPS ≥ 1) was present in only 8% of tumors. In total, 11 (16%) and 6 (9%) out of 69 HGSOC tested carried pathogenic or likely pathogenic BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations, respectively. Median TMB of 40 tumors analyzed was 5.04 mutations/Mb and only 6 tumors had 10 or more mutations/Mb. BRCA status and TMB were not associated with TILs or prognosis. When compared with studies on advanced HGSOC, our results suggested that prognostic variables differed according to stage and that more studies focused on early stages of HGSOC are needed to better stratify these tumors.

RESUMEN

Artificial intelligence (AI) language models are computer programs trained to understand and generate human-like text. The latest AI language models available to the public have impressive language generation capability with immediate applications in both academia and private practice. Plastic surgeons can immediately leverage this technology to more efficiently allocate valuable human capital to higher-yield tasks. This can ultimately translate to higher patient volume, higher research output, and improved patient communication. Commercially available models offer business solutions that should not be ignored by plastic surgeons hoping to establish, optimize, or grow their practices. In this paper, the authors review the current state of AI language systems, discuss potential applications, and explore the risks and limitations of this technology.

Vitamin D is an important human hormone, known primarily to be involved in the intestinal absorption of calcium and phosphate, but it is also involved in various nonskeletal processes (molecular, cellular, immune, and neuronal). One of the main health problems nowadays is the vitamin D deficiency of the human population due to lack of sun exposure, with estimates of one billion people worldwide with vitamin D deficiency, and the consequent need for clinical intervention (i.e., prescription of pharmacological vitamin D supplements). An alternative to reduce vitamin D deficiency is to produce good dietary sources of it, a scenario in which the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae seems to be a promising alternative. This review focuses on the potential use of yeast as a biological platform to produce vitamin D, summarizing both the biological aspects of vitamin D (synthesis, ecology and evolution, metabolism, and bioequivalence) and the work done to produce it in yeast (both for vitamin D2 and for vitamin D3 ), highlighting existing challenges and potential solutions.

Endometrial cancer is one of the most common cancers among women. The International Collaboration on Cancer Reporting (ICCR) developed a standardized endometrial cancer data set in 2011, which provided detailed recommendations for the reporting of resection specimens of these neoplasms. A new data set has been developed, which incorporates the updated 2020 World Health Organization Classification of Female Genital Tumors, the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) molecular classification of endometrial cancers, and other major advances in endometrial cancer reporting, all of which necessitated a major revision of the data set. This updated data set has been produced by a panel of expert pathologists and an expert clinician and has been subject to international open consultation. The data set includes core elements which are unanimously agreed upon as essential for cancer diagnosis, clinical management, staging, or prognosis and noncore elements which are clinically important, but not essential. Explanatory notes are provided for each element. Adoption of this updated data set will result in improvements in endometrial cancer patient care.

PURPOSE: After 3 weeks of age, studies show ear molding to be unsuccessful due to increased regression rates. Studies have not differentiated success rates based on regression severity; partial regressions may be deemed successful and satisfactory by parents. We examined successful ear molding at different ages of presentation by measuring regression severity and parental satisfaction. METHODS: Patients who presented to [blinded for review] for ear molding from January 2017 to October 2018 were eligible for inclusion. Molds were applied on the initial visit and monitored biweekly. Treatment length was based on age, deformity type, and severity. One month after treatment completion, parents completed a satisfaction survey where they assessed regression on a 3-point severity scale. RESULTS: A total of 165 patients were included in this study. Sixty-seven were younger than 3 weeks of age and had an overall correction rate of 95%. The complete correction rate was 80% and only 5% saw complete regression. In the remaining 98, the overall correction rate was 94%, with a 63% complete correction rate. Only 6% saw complete regression. There was no statistical significance in parental satisfaction, perceived improvement, or likelihood to recommend ear molding between age groups. CONCLUSIONS: Regression rates are higher in children older than 3 weeks although not statistically significant. Most regressions were partial and ear molding still significantly corrected most deformities. We suggest that ear molding be offered past 3 weeks of age, with maximum age being dependent on deformity type, as it still leads to high parental satisfaction.

OBJECTIVE: Facial feminization surgery (FFS) is instrumental in gender affirmation for transgender patients. Multiprocedural FFS, the combination of multiple facial feminization procedures across multiple depths and planes during one surgery, crosses sterile and nonsterile planes in the oropharynx, nose, and frontal sinus. A closer look at the prevention and management of resulting complications of such reconstruction is necessary. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of patient demographics, operative variables, and postoperative complications on 31 FFS patients. Patients who underwent FFS between January 2020 and June 2021 were eligible for inclusion. Associations between prevention methods, procedure type, and complications were assessed by the Fisher exact test. The main effect of patient age and number of procedures on complication rate was assessed via the nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis test. RESULTS: A total of 31 patients, with a mean age of 37 years (range: 19-65 y, SD: 13.3 y), underwent 257 procedures. Patients underwent a mean of 8 procedures (SD: 2.2) lasting 3.5 to 6 hours (mean: 5.0 h, SD: 0.9 h). Overall, 68% of patients experienced no complications. Six patients experienced a postoperative infection; 4 of these patients required return for a washout. Preventative measures implemented include: preoperative dental check, intraoperative antibiotic irrigation, locking sutures, and postoperative antibiotics. After measures were implemented, there were no further procedure-related infections recorded. CONCLUSIONS: Patients do not suffer from major complications after multiprocedural FFS. Factors such as age, irrigation method, and dental history may be important variables affecting FFS outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Skull deformities may be seen in patients years after craniosynostosis correction. These deformities cause psychosocial distress in affected patients. In this series, the authors describe the use of patient specific polyether ether ketone (PEEK) implants for correction of skull deformities after cranial vault remodeling for craniosynostosis. METHODS: A chart review was conducted for 3 revision procedures performed by 1 plastic surgeon in collaboration with 1 neurosurgeon, both affiliated with Northwell Health. Preoperative computed tomography scans were used to design three-dimensional (3D) printed PEEK implants manufactured by KLS Martin. Implants were used to correct frontal and orbital asymmetry and skull deformities in each patient. Outcomes were assessed at 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months post-operation. RESULTS: Two males and 1 female, ages 13, 17, and 19, underwent revision cranioplasty or orbital rim reconstruction using a custom, single piece 3D printed PEEK implant. All 3 patients underwent cranial vault remodeling in infancy; 1 was treated for coronal craniosynostosis and 2 were treated for metopic craniosynostosis. Revision cranioplasty operative times were 90, 105, and 147 minutes, with estimated blood loss of 45 mL, 75 mL, and 150 mL, respectively. One patient went home on post op day 1 and 2 patients went home on post op day 2. All patients had an immediate improvement in structural integrity and cranial contour, and all patients were pleased with their aesthetic results. CONCLUSIONS: Custom 3D printed PEEK implants offer a single piece solution in revision cranioplasty surgery to correct skull deformities after cranial vault remodeling for craniosynostosis.
