RESUMEN

Dihydrogen (H2) is an important intermediate in anaerobic microbial processes, and concentrations are tightly controlled by thermodynamic limits of consumption and production. However, recent studies reported unusual H2 accumulation in permeable marine sediments under anoxic conditions, suggesting decoupling of fermentation and sulfate reduction, the dominant respiratory process in anoxic permeable marine sediments. Yet, the extent, prevalence and potential triggers for such H2 accumulation and decoupling remain unknown. We surveyed H2 concentrations in situ at different settings of permeable sand and found that H2 accumulation was only observed during a coral spawning event on the Great Barrier Reef. A flume experiment with organic matter addition to the water column showed a rapid accumulation of hydrogen within the sediment. Laboratory experiments were used to explore the effect of oxygen exposure, physical disturbance and organic matter inputs on H2 accumulation. Oxygen exposure had little effect on H2 accumulation in permeable sediments suggesting both fermenters and sulfate reducers survive and rapidly resume activity after exposure to oxygen. Mild physical disturbance mimicking sediment resuspension had little effect on H2 accumulation; however, vigorous shaking led to a transient accumulation of H2 and release of dissolved organic carbon suggesting mechanical disturbance and cell destruction led to organic matter release and transient decoupling of fermenters and sulfate reducers. In summary, the highly dynamic nature of permeable sediments and its microbial community allows for rapid but transient decoupling of fermentation and respiration after a C pulse, leading to high H2 levels in the sediment.

There has been a surge in interest in developing protective textiles and clothes to protect wearers from risks such as chemical, biological, heat, UV, pollution, and other environmental factors. Traditional protective textiles have strong water resistance but lack breathability and have a limited capacity to remove water vapor and moisture. Electrospun fibers and membranes have shown enormous promise in developing protective materials and garments. Textiles made up of electrospun fibers and membranes can provide thermal comfort and protection against a wide range of environmental threats. Because of their multifunctional properties, such as semi-conductivity, ultraviolet absorption, optical transparency, and photoluminescence, their low toxicity, biodegradability, low cost, and versatility in achieving diverse shapes, ZnO-based nanomaterials are a subject of increasing interest in the current review. The growing uses of electrospinning in the development of breathable and protective textiles are highlighted in this review.

RESUMEN

Microfluidics provides a precise synthesis of micro-/nanostructures for various applications, including bioengineering and medicine. In this review article, traditional and microfluidic synthesis methods of zinc oxide (ZnO) are compared concerning particle size distribution, morphology, applications, reaction parameters, used reagents, and microfluidic device materials. Challenges of traditional synthesis methods are reviewed in a manner where microfluidic approaches may overcome difficulties related to synthesis precision, bulk materials, and reproducibility.

South Asian air is among the most polluted in the world, causing premature death of millions and asserting a strong perturbation of the regional climate. A central component is carbon monoxide (CO), which is a key modulator of the oxidizing capacity of the atmosphere and a potent indirect greenhouse gas. While CO concentrations are declining elsewhere, South Asia exhibits an increasing trend for unresolved reasons. In this paper, we use dual-isotope (δ13C and δ18O) fingerprinting of CO intercepted in the South Asian outflow to constrain the relative contributions from primary and secondary CO sources. Results show that combustion-derived primary sources dominate the wintertime continental CO fingerprint (fprimary ∼ 79 ± 4%), significantly higher than the global estimate (fprimary ∼ 55 ± 5%). Satellite-based inventory estimates match isotope-constrained fprimary-CO, suggesting observational convergence in source characterization and a prospect for model-observation reconciliation. This "ground-truthing" emphasizes the pressing need to mitigate incomplete combustion activities for climate/air quality benefits in South Asia.

RESUMEN

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is recognized as one of the most common medical complications of pregnancy that can lead to significant short-term and long-term risks for the mother and the fetus if not detected early and treated appropriately. Current evidence suggests that, with the use of appropriate screening programs for GDM, those women diagnosed and treated have reduced perinatal morbidity. It has been implied that, when screening for GDM, there should be uniformity in the testing used and in further management. This paper summarizes and compares current screening strategies proposed by international bodies and discusses application in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is studied from many perspectives and has gained unprecedented importance in recent years, especially in emerging economies. Pharmaceutical companies play a very important role in a population's well-being and health through the CSR and corporate governance practices that they apply. METHODS: We used an exploratory approach to measure compliance with the Corporate Governance Code of pharmaceutical companies listed on the Romanian capital market and with practices declared through CSR. RESULTS: The results show that pharmaceutical companies are involved in actions that consider the well-being of society by offering financial support and managing various sustainable projects, targeting social and economic issues, leading public health awareness campaigns, and investing in health projects. CONCLUSION: This study highlights the increasingly important role played by corporate governance and corporate social responsibility in pharmaceutical companies in improving public health in countries with emerging economies.

RATIONALE: Molecular hydrogen (H2 ) is an important gas for atmospheric chemistry, and an indirect greenhouse gas due to its reaction with OH. The isotopic composition of H2 (δD) has been used to investigate its atmospheric budget; here we add a new observable, the clumped isotopic signature ΔDD, to the tools that can be used to study the global cycle of H2 . METHODS: A method for determining ΔDD in H2 was developed using the high-resolution MAT 253-Ultra isotope ratio mass spectrometer (Thermo Fisher). The HH, HD and DD abundances are quantified at medium resolution (M/ΔM ≈ 6000), which is sufficient for HD+ and DD+ to be distinguished from H3 + and H2 D+ , respectively. The method involves sequential measurement of isotopologues, and DD is measured using an ion counter. For verification, catalytic ΔDD equilibration experiments were performed at temperatures of up to 850°C. RESULTS: The typical precision obtained for ΔDD is 2-6‰, close to the theoretical counting statistics limit, and adequate for detecting the expected natural variations. Compatibility and medium-term reproducibility are consistent with the precision values. The method was validated using temperature equilibration experiments, which showed a dependence of ΔDD on temperature as expected form theoretical calculations. CONCLUSIONS: We have established a method for determining ΔDD in H2 at natural isotopic abundances, with a precision that is adequate for observing the expected variations in atmospheric and other natural H2 . This method opens the road to new research on the natural H2 cycle.

Building the future of precision medicine is the main focus in cancer domain. Clinical trials are moving toward an array of studies that are more adapted to precision medicine. In this domain, there is an enhanced need for biomarkers, monitoring devices, and data-analysis methods. Omics profiling using whole genome, epigenome, transcriptome, proteome, and metabolome can offer detailed information of the human body in an integrative manner. Omes profiles reflect more accurately real-time physiological status. Personalized omics analyses both disease as a whole and the main disease processes, for a better understanding of the individualized health. Through this, multi-omic approaches for health monitoring, preventative medicine, and personalized treatment can be targeted simultaneously and can lead clinicians to have a comprehensive view on the diseasome.

Honey is used in food industry and medicine due to its nutritive, therapeutic and dietetic qualities. The microbiological characteristics of 10 unpasteurized honey samples of known origin, collected from Transylvania beekeepers (Romania) were determined. The antibacterial activity of these types of honey against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Salmonella enteritidis, Salmonella anatum, Salmonella choleraesuis, Bacillus cereus, Bacillus subtilis subsp. spizizenii and Listeria monocytogenes strains was studied. The most sensitive to the antibacterial activity were the two staphylococus strains (the largest diameter of inhibition zone was 18 mm) and B. subtilis strains (13.5 mm). The strains of B. cereus, E. coli, L. monocytogenes and Salmonella spp. were found to present resistance to some of the honey samples. Manna, sunflower and polyfloral honeys presented high antibacterial activity while acacia and linden honeys had a lower activity in terms of the number of sensible strains. Statistical analysis shows that the type of strains and the type of honey have influence on the diameter of inhibition.

This is a single tertiary population-based study conducted at a center in southwest Romania. We retrospectively compared data obtained in two periods: January 2008-December 2013 and January 2018-December 2023. The global incidence of the transposition of great arteries in terminated cases, in addition to those resulting in live-born pregnancies, remained almost constant. The live-birth incidence decreased. The median gestational age at diagnosis decreased from 29.3 gestational weeks (mean 25.4) to 13.4 weeks (mean 17.2). The second trimester and the overall detection rate in the prenatal period did not significantly change, but the increase was statistically significant in the first trimester. The proportion of terminated pregnancies in fetuses diagnosed with the transposition of great arteries significantly increased (14.28% to 75%, p = 0.019).

BACKGROUND: In children's palliative care, the term "respite" refers to a temporary break offered to primary caregivers of a child with a life-limiting illness. The aim of this study was to assess the perceptions of parents who have benefited from respite care services in the Lumina Association, Bacau hospice unit and the benefits it can bring in improving their psycho-emotional state. METHODS: The study consisted of quantitative research involving 34 parents/caregivers who responded to a questionnaire with 26 questions, and qualitative research which involved the organization of a focus group with 12 parents who benefited from respite services. RESULTS: The use of respite services was associated with a significant reduction of psycho-emotional distress on the part of primary caregivers; 91% of respondents said that this type of service reduces the level of psycho-emotional stress. CONCLUSIONS: All participants in the study confirmed that the most important benefit of respite is the time gained to care for family and health. The development of respite services could reduce the risk of emotional exhaustion and mental health problems.

BACKGROUND: Palliative care is a challenging specialty, especially when it comes to caring for children with serious life-limiting conditions and supporting their families. Workers face significant challenges and experience major impacts on their wellbeing. We conducted a qualitative study to understand the sources of stress in the palliative care team, their work expectations, and how they can cope with the demands. METHODS: We used an online questionnaire about the causes of stress, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the ways in which support is needed in the workplace. RESULTS: Of the 56 palliative care professionals who participated in the survey, 57.1% considered the main causes of stress to be high workload, difficult emotional burdens (55.4%) affecting their outlook on life (61.2%), the death of patients (46.4%), and communication with patients' families (26.8%). The COVID-19 pandemic increased stress levels for the majority of respondents (89.3%). The need for specialised training (53.6%), support groups, psychological counselling and adapted organisational policies was highlighted. CONCLUSIONS: The study demonstrates the importance of understanding the needs of both paediatric and adult palliative care staff in order to provide optimal care and support their balance in this demanding area of the healthcare system.

Adenohypophysal pituitary tumors account for 10-15% of all intracranial tumors, and 25-55% display signs of invasiveness. Nevertheless, oncology still relies on histopathological examination to establish the diagnosis. Considering that the classification of pituitary tumors has changed significantly in recent years, we discuss the definition of aggressive and invasive tumors and the latest molecular criteria used for classifying these entities. The pituitary tumor microenvironment (TME) is essential for neoplastic development and progression. This review aims to reveal the impact of TME characteristics on stratifying these tumors in view of finding appropriate therapeutic approaches. The role of the pituitary tumor microenvironment and its main components, non-tumoral cells and soluble factors, has been addressed. The variable display of different immune cell types, tumor-associated fibroblasts, and folliculostellate cells is discussed in relation to tumor development and aggressiveness. The molecules secreted by both tumoral and non-tumoral cells, such as VEGF, FGF, EGF, IL6, TNFα, and immune checkpoint molecules, contribute to the crosstalk between the tumor and its microenvironment. They could be considered potential biomarkers for diagnosis and the invasiveness of these tumors, together with emerging non-coding RNA molecules. Therefore, assessing this complex network associated with pituitary neuroendocrine tumors could bring a new era in diagnosing and treating this pathology.

Propolis use in medicine, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and food industries is well known. This study aimed to investigate propolis' phyto-inhibitory and antimicrobial potential. Nine propolis samples obtained from distinct Romanian regions and characterized in terms of physical-chemical parameters, phenols and flavonoid contents, and antioxidant properties were prepared as dry propolis and aqueous extracts. The phyto-inhibitory effect was comparatively tested on different cereals: hexaploid bread wheat (Triticum aestivum), maize (Zea mays L.), oats (Avena sativa L.), and barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), while their in vitro antimicrobial activity was evaluated against bacterial and fungal strains specific to cereals: Bacillus subtilis, B. cereus, Proteus mirabilis, Fusarium oxysporum, Penicillium chrysogenum, and Aspergillus niger. All propolis samples showed a phyto-inhibitory effect on the cereals, the most pronounced being corn and oats. Propolis powder samples displayed a lower phyto-inhibitory activity than propolis extracts. Also, all tested products showed inhibitory efficacy against both bacteria and fungi. Furthermore, principal component analysis showed differences between the samples' phyto-inhibitory and antimicrobial properties depending on the geographical origin. Positive correlations were found between the polyphenols, flavonoid content, and antioxidant activity, respectively. These data support propolis' phyto-pharmaceutical potential related to its use in plant crop management as an alternative in ecological agriculture.

The objective of this paper was to study the phyto-inhibitory and antimicrobial activity of brown propolis collected from the counties of four regions in Romania. The main physico-chemical and functional properties of 16 samples of propolis from different landforms of geographical regions were determined. Their antimicrobial activities were established against 5 bacterial strains (Pseudomonas fluorescens, Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli, and Proteus mirabilis) and 5 fungal strains (Alternaria alternata, Cladosporium cladosporioides, Fusarium oxysporum, Mucor racemosus, and Aspergillus niger). Simultaneously, the phyto-inhibitory effect of propolis samples on different cereals was highlighted: hexaploid bread wheat (Triticum aestivum), maize (Zea mays L.), oats (Avena sativa L.), and barley (Hordeum vulgare L.). Correlations between the antioxidant activity and total flavonoid and phenol content of the propolis samples were identified, respectively, and the statistical analysis highlighted that the diameter of the inhibition zone was influenced by the strain type (bacterial and fungal) and the geographical regions of propolis. Principal component analysis (PCA) indicated that out of seven principal components, only two exhibited > 0.5. Pearson's correlation coefficient showed a low and moderate positive linear relationship between the diameter of the inhibition zone and the flavonoid and phenol concentration of the propolis samples.

Complicated wounds often require specialized medical treatments, and hydrogels have emerged as a popular choice for wound dressings in such cases due to their unique properties and the ability to incorporate and release therapeutic agents. Our focus was to develop and characterize a new optimized formula for biohybrid hydrogel membranes, which combine natural and synthetic polymers, bioactive natural compounds, like collagen and hyaluronic acid, and pharmacologically active substances (doxycycline or npAg). Dynamic (oscillatory) rheometry confirmed the strong gel-like properties of the obtained hydrogel membranes. Samples containing low-dose DOXY showed a swelling index of 285.68 ± 6.99%, a degradation rate of 71.6 ± 0.91% at 20 h, and achieved a cumulative drug release of approximately 90% at pH 7.4 and 80% at pH 8.3 within 12 h. The addition of npAg influenced the physical properties of the hydrogel membranes. Furthermore, the samples containing DOXY demonstrated exceptional antimicrobial efficacy against seven selected bacterial strains commonly associated with wound infections and complications. Biocompatibility assessments revealed that the samples exhibited over 80% cell viability. However, the addition of smaller-sized nanoparticles led to decreased cellular viability. The obtained biohybrid hydrogel membranes show favorable properties that render them suitable for application as wound dressings.

INTRODUCTION: Increasingly, SGLT2 inhibitors save patients with heart failure and comorbidities such as type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and chronic kidney disease (CKD); the inhibition of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) was first studied in patients with diabetes as a solution to lower glucose levels by preventing glucose reabsorption and facilitating its elimination; in the process, researchers took notice of how SGLT2 inhibitors also seemed to have beneficial cardiovascular effects in patients with both diabetes and cardiovascular disease. AIM: Our single-center prospective study assesses outcomes of post-coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) rehabilitation and SLGT2 inhibition in CABG patients with/without T2DM and with/without CKD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred twenty consecutive patients undergoing CABG were included in the analysis. Patients were divided into four subgroups: diabetes patients with chronic kidney disease (T2DM + CKD), diabetes patients without chronic kidney disease (T2DM-CKD), prediabetes patients with chronic kidney disease (PreD+CKD), and prediabetes patients without chronic kidney disease (PreD-CKD). Echocardiographic and laboratory investigations post-surgery (phase I) and 6 months later (phase II) included markers for cardiac ischemia, glycemic status, and renal function, and metabolic equivalents were investigated. RESULTS: One hundred twenty patients participated, mostly men, overweight/obese, hypertensive, smokers; 65 had T2DM (18 with CKD), and 55 were prediabetic (17 with CKD). The mean ejection fraction increased by 8.43% overall but significantly more in the prediabetes group compared to the T2DM group (10.14% vs. 6.98%, p < 0.05). Overall, mean heart-type fatty-acid-binding protein (H-FABP) levels returned to normal levels, dropping from 68.40 ng/mL to 4.82 ng/mL (p = 0.000), and troponin data were more nuanced relative to an overall, strongly significant decrease of 44,458 ng/L (p = 0.000). Troponin levels in patients with CKD dropped more, both in the presence of T2DM (by 82,500 ng/L, p = 0.000) and in patients without T2DM (by 73,294 ng/L, p = 0.047). As expected, the overall glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels improved significantly in those with prediabetes (from 6.54% to 5.55%, p = 0.000); on the other hand, the mean HbA1c changed from 7.06% to 6.06% (p = 0.000) in T2DM, and the presence or absence of CKD did not seem to make any difference: T2DM+CKD 7.01-6.08% (p = 0.000), T2DM-CKD 7.08-6.04% (p = 0.000), PreD+CKD 5.66-4.98% (p = 0.014), and PreD-CKD 6.03-4.94% (p = 0.00). Compared to an overall gain of 11.51, the GFRs of patients with CKD improved by 18.93 (68.15-87.07%, p = 0.000) in the presence of established diabetes and 14.89 (64.75-79.64%, p = 0.000) in the prediabetes group. CONCLUSIONS: Regarding the patients' cardiac statuses, the results from our single-center analysis revealed a significant decrease in ischemic risk (H-FABP and hs-cTnI levels) with improvements in mean ejection fraction, glycemic status, and renal function in patients post-CABG with/without T2DM, with/without CKD, and with SGLT2 inhibitor dapagliflozin treatment while undergoing cardiac rehabilitation.

The inhibiting properties of 5-(4-pyridyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole-2-thiol (PyODT) on the corrosion of carbon steel in 1.0 M HCl solution were investigated by potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and SEM-EDX analysis. An approach based on machine learning algorithms and Raman data was also applied to follow the carbon steel degradation in different experimental conditions. The electrochemical measurements revealed that PyODT behaves as a mixed-type corrosion inhibitor, reaching an efficiency of about 93.1% at a concentration of 5 mM, after 1 h exposure to 1.0 M HCl solution. Due to the molecular adsorption and structural organization of PyODT molecules on the C-steel surface, higher inhibitive effectiveness of about 97% was obtained at 24 h immersion. The surface analysis showed a significantly reduced degradation state of the carbon steel surface in the presence of PyODT due to the inhibitor adsorption revealed by Raman spectroscopy and the presence of N and S atoms in the EDX spectra. The combination of Raman spectroscopy and machine learning algorithms was proved to be a facile and reliable tool for an incipient identification of the corrosion sites on a metallic surface exposed to corrosive environments.

The purpose of this study was to review the physicochemical characterization of Romanian honey and propolis and their antifungal effect on different strains. As an indicator of environmental pollution, lead exceeded the allowed limits in two study areas. The relationship between the acidity and electrical conductivity of polyfloral honey and the antioxidant activity with the total content of phenolics and flavonoids was investigated. The antifungal activity of 13 polyfloral honey and propolis samples from North-West and Central Romania and 12 samples from Alba County was investigated against six fungal strains: Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus, Candida albicans, Penicillium chrysogenum, Rhizopus stolonifer, Fusarium oxysporum. All honey and propolis samples exhibited an antifungal effect. The most sensitive strains were P. chrysogenum and R. stolonifer for honey and P. chrysogenum and F. oxisporumn for propolis. A two-way analysis of variance was used to evaluate the correlations between the diameter of the inhibition zones for the strains and the propolis extracts. Statistical analysis demonstrated that the diameter of the inhibition zone was influenced by the strain type and the geographical origin of honey and propolis. Pearson's correlation coefficient shows a significant positive linear relationship between the diameter of the inhibition zone and the flavonoid and phenol concentration of honey and propolis, respectively.

Background: Historically, hepatitis C virus (HCV) pretreatment evaluation has required multiple visits, frequently resulting in loss to follow-up and a delayed initiation of treatment. New technologies can accelerate this process. We investigated the feasibility of a single-day evaluation program and its impact on evaluation completion, treatment eligibility awareness, and treatment initiation among people who inject drugs (PWIDs). Methods: HCV-infected PWID who were unaware if they were eligible for treatment were recruited in a prospective evaluation of an accelerated model of care between 2017 and 2019 and compared to a historical cohort. The patients underwent a medical evaluation, rapid HCV viral load testing, and transient elastography during a single visit, at the end of which they were informed whether they were eligible for treatment. A historical cohort of patients fulfilling the same inclusion criteria and evaluated with the usual standard of care spanning several visits who were examined at the addiction medicine clinic from 2014 to 2016 served as the comparison group. Results: The accelerated and historical cohorts included 99 and 76 patients, respectively. The cohorts did not differ significantly by age and gender, but more patients in the historical cohort were undergoing opioid agonist therapy, while more patients in the accelerated cohort injected drugs in the last month. An accelerated evaluation resulted in a higher rate of evaluation completion (100% vs 67.1%; P < .001). Among those eligible for treatment, the proportion of those initiating treatment was similar between the groups (51/64 (79.7%) vs. 26/37 (70.3%); P = .28). The delay in the initiation of treatment was shorter in the accelerated cohort than in the historical cohort (69 (IQR: 49-106) days vs. 219 (IQR: 141-416) days; P < .001). Conclusions: Accelerated evaluation enhanced the awareness of eligibility and reduced the time to initiation among eligible patients.
