RESUMEN

Transition metal phosphides (TMPs) have been regarded as the prospective anodes for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, their poor intrinsic conductivity and inevitable large volume variation result in sluggish redox kinetics and the collapse of electrode structure during cycling, which substantially hinders their practical use. Herein, an effective composite electrodes design strategy of "assembly and phosphorization" is proposed to construct synergistic N-doped carbon-encapsulated NiCoP@N-C-based composites, employing a metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as sacrificial hosts. Serving as the anodes for LIBs, one representative P-NCP-NC-600 electrode exhibits high reversible capacity (858.5 mAh g-1, 120 cycles at 0.1 A g-1) and superior long-cycle stability (608.7 mAh g-1, 500 cycles at 1 A g-1). The impressive performances are credited to the synergistic effect between its unique composite structure, electronic properties and ideal composition, which achieve plentiful lithium storage sites and reinforce the structural architecture. By accompanying experimental investigations with theoretical calculations, a deep understanding in the lithium storage mechanism is achieved. Furthermore, it is revealed that a more ideal synergistic effect between NiCoP components and N-doped carbon frameworks is fundamentally responsible for the realization of superb lithium storage properties. This strategy proposes certain instructive significance toward designable high-performance TMP-based anodes for high-energy density LIBs.

RESUMEN

The increasing demand for high-energy-density and high-safety energy storage devices has sparked a growing interest in all-solid-state lithium metal batteries (ASSLMBs). A high-quality inorganic solid-state electrolyte (ISE) is a fundamental requirement for ASSLMBs, and an effective ISE/Li interface is a key factor in attaining high-performance ASSLMBs. In this Concept, we initially summarize the challenges encountered by ISE/Li interfaces and delineate four commonly employed strategies for modifying the ISE/Li interface. Then, we explore the merits and drawbacks of coatings utilized as ISE/Li interfacial phases. We also delve into the commonly employed thermal bonding and innovative cold bonding methods utilized for in situ interface preparation. Lastly, we spotlight future directions for enhancing the functionality of ISE/Li interfaces and achieving high-performance ASSLMBs.

RESUMEN

Dual-ion batteries (DIBs) is a promising technology for large-scale energy storage. However, it is still questionable how material structures affect the anion storage behavior. In this paper, we synthesis graphite with an ultra-large interlayer distance and heteroatomic doping to systematically investigate the combined effects on DIBs. The large interlayer distance of 0.51 nm provides more space for anion storage, while the doping of the heteroatoms reduces the energy barriers for anion intercalation and migration and enhances rapid ionic storage at interfaces simultaneously. Based on the synergistic effects, the DIBs composed of carbon cathode and lithium anode afford ultra-high capacity of 240 mAh g-1 at current density of 100 mA g-1 . Dual-carbon batteries (DCBs) using the graphite as both of cathode and anode steadily cycle 2400 times at current density of 1 A g-1 . Hence, this work provides a reference to the strategy of material designs of DIBs and DCBs.

RESUMEN

Silica glasses have wide applications in industrial fields due to their extraordinary properties, such as high transparency, low thermal expansion coefficient, and high hardness. However, current methods of fabricating silica glass generally require long thermal treatment time (up to hours) and complex setups, leading to high cost and slow manufacturing speed. Herein, to obtain high-quality glasses using a facile and rapid method, an ultrafast high-temperature sintering (UHS) technique is reported that requires no additional pressure. Using UHS, silica precursors can be densified in seconds due to the large heating rate (up to 102 K s-1 ) of closely placed carbon heaters. The typical sintering time is as short as ≈10 s, ≈1-3 orders of magnitude faster than other methods. The sintered glasses exhibit relative densities of > 98% and high visible transmittances of ≈90%. The powder-based sintering process also allows rapid doping of metal ions to fabricate colored glasses. The UHS is further extended to sinter other functional glasses such as indium tin oxide (ITO)-doped silica glass, and other transparent ceramics such as Gd-doped yttrium aluminum garnet. This study demonstrates an UHS proof-of-concept for the rapid fabrication of high-quality glass and opens an avenue toward rapid discovery of transparent materials.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Osteosarcoma (OS) is the most common primary malignant bone tumors in children and adolescents. Large numbers of studies have focused on the long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) that plays essential roles in the progression of osteosarcoma. Nevertheless, the functions and underlying mechanisms of LncRNA NDRG1 in osteosarcoma remain unknown. METHODS: Differentially expressed lncRNAs between osteosarcoma and adjacent normal tissues were identified through RNA sequencing. The role of LncRNA NDRG1 in osteosarcoma proliferation and metastasis were investigated through in vitro and in vivo functional experiments. The interaction between LncRNA NDRG1 and miR-96-5p was verified through bioinformatic analysis and luciferase reporter assay. Regulation relationship between LncRNA NDRG1 and miR-96-5p was further evaluated by the rescue experiments. Additionally, the changes in the expression of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and the PI3K/AKT pathway were verified by Western blot. RESULTS: LncRNA NDRG1 was up-regulated in osteosarcoma cell lines and tissues and the expression of LncRNA NDRG1 was correlated with the overall survival of osteosarcoma patients. Functional experiments exhibited that LncRNA NDRG1 aggravated osteosarcoma proliferation and migration in vitro; meanwhile, animals experiments showed that LncRNA NDRG1 promoted osteosarcoma growth and metastasis in vivo. Mechanistically, LncRNA NDRG1 was found to aggravate osteosarcoma progression and regulate the PI3K/AKT pathway by sponging miR-96-5p. CONCLUSIONS: LncRNA NDRG1 aggravates osteosarcoma progression and regulates the PI3K/AKT pathway by sponging miR-96-5p. Therefore, LncRNA NDRG1 could act as a prognostic marker and a therapeutic target for osteosarcoma in the future.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) has rarely been applied in plant science, particularly to study plant resistance to abiotic and biotic stresses. In this study, we evaluated the freezing resistance of floribunda roses (Rosa Floribunda) during frost dehardening using the EIT technique to identify a new method for rapid and non-destructive measurement of plant freezing resistance. RESULTS: The current was the excitation source, the boundary voltage value was measured, and then the boundary voltage reconstructed value was formed. Using an imaging algorithm, the two-dimensional (2D) distribution of impedance or impedance variation was reconstructed. The EIT reconstructed values decreased obviously with the decline in freezing temperatures. The EIT reconstructed values of stems had the best fit to the logistic equation, and subsequently, the semi-lethal temperatures were calculated. The freezing resistance results evaluated using EIT reconstructed values were linearly correlated with the results of the traditional electrolyte leakage (EL) method (r = 0.93, P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, after freezing tests, the reconstructed values of EIT images could be used to quantitatively evaluate the freezing resistance of floribunda rose stems. The present study provides a reference for the further application of the EIT technique for non-destructive and rapid detection of plant freezing resistance.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To study the efficacy and safety of lactase additive in improving lactose intolerance in preterm infants. METHODS: A total of 60 preterm infants with lactose intolerance who were admitted to the Xinhua Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine from January 2018 to December 2019 were randomly divided into a lactase treatment group and a control group, with 30 infants in each group. The infants in the lactase treatment group were given 4 drops of lactase additive (180 mg) added into preterm formula or breast milk, and those in the control group were given placebo, oral administration of probiotics (live combined Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus and Enterococcus powder) at half an hour after feeding (1 g each time, twice a day), and clockwise abdominal massage around the belly button at 1 hour after feeding for 15 minutes each time, 3 times a day. Fecal pH, fecal reducing sugar, growth indicators, symptoms of lactose intolerance, and laboratory markers were measured at the end of the first and second weeks after intervention. RESULTS: Finally 29 infants in the lactase treatment group and 26 infants in the control group completed the trial. At the end of the first week after intervention, compared with the control group, the lactase treatment group had significantly lower frequency of daily milk vomiting and gastric retention amount (P < 0.05) and a significantly higher proportion of infants with fecal pH > 5.0 (P < 0.05). At the end of the second week after intervention, compared with the control group, the lactase treatment group had significantly lower frequency of daily milk vomiting and 24-hour abdominal circumference difference (P < 0.05) and a significantly higher proportion of infants with the absence of gastric retention, fecal pH > 5.0, or negative reducing sugar in feces (P < 0.05). No adverse reactions associated with the lactase additive or probiotics were observed during the trial. CONCLUSIONS: Lactase additive can safely and effectively improve the clinical symptoms caused by lactose intolerance in preterm infants.

RESUMEN

Interplay of pioneer transcription factor forkhead box A1 (FOXA1) and estrogen receptor has been implicated in sexual dimorphism in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), but etiological relevance of its polymorphism was unknown. In the case control study (1152 patients versus1242 controls), we observed significant increase in HCC susceptibility in hepatitis B virus carriers associated with a non-synonymous Thr83Ala variant of FOXA1 (odds ratio [OR], 1.28; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.11-1.48, for Ala83-containing genotype, after validation in an independent population with 933 patients versus 1030 controls), a tightly linked (CGC)5/6or7 repeat polymorphism at its promoter (OR 1.32; 95% CI 1.10-1.60, for (CGC)6or7-repeat-containing genotype), and their combined haplotype (OR 1.50; 95% CI 1.24-1.81, for (CGC)6or7-Ala83 haplotype). The susceptible FOXA1-Ala83 impairs its interaction with ERα, attenuates transactivation toward some of their dual target genes, such as type 1 iodothyronine deiodinase, UDP glucuronosyltransferase 2 family, polypeptide B17 and sodium/taurocholate cotransporting polypeptide, but correlates with strengthened cellular expression of α-fetoprotein (AFP) and elevated AFP serum concentration in HCC patients (n = 1096). The susceptible FOXA1 cis-variant with (CGC)6or7 repeat strengthens the binding to transcription factor early growth response 1 and enhances promoter activity and gene expression. Evolutionary population genetics analyses with public datasets reveal significant population differentiation and unique haplotype structure of the derived protective FOXA1-Thr83 and suggest that it may have undergone positive natural selection in Chinese population. These findings epidemiologically highlight the functional significance of FOXA1-ERα transcriptional program and regulatory network in liver cancer development.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: Ossification of ligamentum flavum (OLF) is the leading cause of progressive thoracic myelopathy (TM) in East Asian countries. Surgical decompression is the general treatment for TM. This study investigated the application of percutaneous full endoscopic posterior decompression (PEPD) for the treatment of thoracic OLF. METHODS: Eighteen patients with TM were treated by PEPD under local anaesthesia. Patients had an average age of 59.1 years and single-level lesions mostly at the lower thoracic vertebrae. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging were used to classify the OLF. The pre- and postoperative neurological statuses were evaluated using the American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) sensory and motor score, modified Japanese Orthopaedic Association (mJOA) score and Frankel grade. RESULTS: OLF for all patients was classed as lateral, extended, and enlarged types without comma and tram track signs. Decompression was completed, and a dome-shaped laminotomy was performed through limited laminectomy and flavectomy. Dural tears in 2 patients were the only observed complication. The average score of ASIA sensory and motor, mJOA, as well as the Frankel grade improved significantly after surgery at an average follow-up time of 17.4 months. The average recovery rate (RR) was 47.5% as calculated from the mJOA scores. According to RR, 10 cases were classified as good, 4 cases fair, and 4 cases unchanged. CONCLUSIONS: For patients with thoracic OLF at a single level and lateral, extended, and enlarged types without comma and tram track signs, it is safe and reliable to perform PEPD, which has satisfactory clinical results. These slides can be retrieved under Electronic Supplementary Material.

RESUMEN

A highly efficient oxygen electrode is indispensable for achieving high-performance aprotic lithium-O2 batteries. Herein, it is demonstrated that strongly coupled carbon nanosheets/molybdenum carbide (α-MoC1-x ) nanocluster hierarchical hybrid hollow spheres (denoted as MoC1-x /HSC) can work well as cathode for boosting the performance of lithium-O2 batteries. The important feature of MoC1-x /HSC is that the α-MoC1-x nanoclusters, uniformly incorporated into carbon nanosheets, can not only effectively prevent the nanoclusters from agglomeration, but also help enhance the interaction between the nanoclusters and the conductive substrate during the charge and discharge process. As a consequence, the MoC1-x /HSC shows significantly improved electrocatalytic performance in an aprotic Li-O2 battery with greatly reduced charge and discharge overpotentials and long cycle stability. The ex situ scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies reveal that the mechanism for the high-performance Li-O2 battery using MoC1-x /HSC as cathode is that the incorporated molybdenum carbide nanoclusters can make oxygen reduction on their surfaces easy, and finally form amorphous film-like Li-deficient Li2 O2 with the ability to decompose at a low potential. To the best of knowledge, the MoC1-x /HSC of this paper is among the best cathode materials for lithium-O2 batteries reported to date.

RESUMEN

UNLABELLED: Interferon (IFN)-α is a first-line therapy for chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients but only initiates a response in a minority of patients. A genetic variant, rs7574865 in STAT4, was recently reported to be associated with risk of developing CHB and hepatitis B virus-related hepatocellular carcinoma. We aimed to determine whether this variant is associated with the response to IFNα treatment for hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg)-positive CHB patients. We studied 466 HBeAg-positive CHB patients who received either IFNα-2b (n = 224) or pegylated IFNα-2a (n = 242) therapy for 48 weeks and were followed for an additional 24 weeks. The rate of sustained virologic response (SVR), defined as HBeAg seroconversion along with hepatitis B virus DNA level <2000 copies/mL at week 72, was compared among patients with different genotypes of rs7574865. After 48 weeks of treatment and 24 weeks off treatment, the SVR rates in the IFNα-2b and pegylated IFNα-2a therapy groups were 30.4% and 28.9%, respectively. Compared to the rs7574865 GT/TT genotype, the GG genotype (a risk factor of CHB and hepatitis B virus-related hepatocellular carcinoma) was significantly associated with a reduced SVR rate in both patients who received IFNα-2b therapy (21.1% versus 37.2%, P = 0.01) and those who received pegylated IFNα-2a therapy (18.0% versus 41.2%, P = 9.74 × 10(-5) ). In joint analysis of the 466 patients, the GG genotype was associated with an approximately half SVR rate compared to the GT/TT genotype (19.3% versus 39.1%, P = 4.15 × 10(-6) ). A multivariate logistic regression model including rs7574865 and clinical variables showed that rs7574865 was the most significant factor for the prediction of SVR. CONCLUSION: STAT4 rs7574865 is a reliable predictor of response to IFNα therapy for HBeAg-positive CHB patients and may be used for optimizing the treatment of CHB.

RESUMEN

Platinum-based chemotherapy is an important treatment for non-small cell lung cancer. However, the effectiveness of the treatment varies among the patients. We investigated the association between DNA polymorphisms of the autophagy pathway and responses of such treatment among 1004 Chinese patients. Ninety-nine SNPs located on 13 genes of the autophagy pathway were genotyped and assessed for their association with clinical benefit, progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). The results showed that rs7953348 (G>A) (P=0.017, OR: 0.67, 95%CI: 0.49-0.93) and rs12303764 (A>C) (P=0.009, OR: 0.63, 95%CI: 0.45-0.89) at the ULK1 gene, and rs17742719 (C>A) (P=0.002, OR: 1.83, 95%CI: 1.26-2.66), rs8003279 (A>G) (P=0.006, OR: 1.65, 95%CI: 1.16~2.35) and rs1009647 (G>A) (P=0.002, OR: 1.70, 95%CI: 1.22-2.37) at the ATG14 gene were associated with clinical benefit. Polymorphisms at rs7955890 (G>A) (P=0.004, HR: 0.63; 95%CI: 0.46-0.86) and rs17032060 (G>A) (P=0.006, HR: 0.65, 95%CI: 0.48-0.88) at the DRAM gene, and rs13082005 (G>A) (P=0.012, HR: 1.27, 95%CI: 1.05-1.53) at the ATG3 gene were significantly associated with PFS. We also found that rs7953348 (G>A) (P=0.011, HR: 0.74, 95%CI: 0.58-0.93) at the ULK1 gene and rs1864183 (G>A) (P=0.016, HR: 0.42, 95%CI: 0.21-0.85) at the ATG10 gene were associated with OS. Thus, the study demonstrated that the autophagy pathway might play important role(s) in platinum-based chemotherapy. DNA polymorphisms in its component genes can potentially be predictors for clinical responses of platinum-based chemotherapy among the patients with non-small lung cancer.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: To investigate whether genetic variants of the HBV receptor gene NTCP are associated with HBV infection in the Han Chinese population. METHODS: We sequenced the entire 23 kb NTCP gene from 111 HBeAg-positive HBsAg carriers (PSE group), 110 HBeAg-negative HBsAg carriers (PS group), and 110 control subjects. Then, we performed association analyses of suggestively significant SNPs with HBV infection in 1075 controls, 1936 PSs and 639 PSEs. RESULTS: In total, 109 rare variants (74 novel) and 38 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs, one novel) were screened. Of the seven non-synonymous rare variants, six were singletons and one was a double hit. All three damaging rare singletons presented exclusively in the PSE group. Of the five SNPs validated in all 3650 subjects, the T allele of rs4646287 was significantly decreased (p = 0.002) in the PS group (10.1%) and PSE group (8.1%) compared to the controls (10.9%) and was decreased to 7.4% in the PSE hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) subgroup. Additionally, rs4646287-T was associated with a 0.68-fold (95% CI = 0.51-0.89, p = 0.006) decreased risk of PSE compared with the controls. The NTCP mRNA level was lower in HCC tissues in "CT + TT" carriers than in "CC" carriers. CONCLUSIONS: We found a genetic variant (rs4646287) located in intron 1 of NTCP that may be associated with increased risk of HBV infection in Han Chinese.

RESUMEN

The suppressor of cytokine signaling SOCS1 is a member of the cytokine signaling pathway inhibitor family, which is induced by the IFN-γ induced JAK signaling pathway. The expression of SOCS1 has been found to increase in Crohn's disease (CD) patients, but the role of SOCS1 in intestinal epithelium is unclear. This study was designed to investigate whether SOCS1 has a role in the death of intestinal epithelial cells and intestinal injury. The results showed that the expression of SOCS1 increased in CD patients, and the expression of SOCS1, p-p53 and PUMA increased in the mouse TNBS induced colitis model. Using IFN-γ treated HT-29 cells as an apoptotic model of intestinal epithelial cells in vitro, we confirmed that SOCS1 promoted apoptosis of intestinal epithelial cells by activating p53. In HT-29 cells which were treated with IFN-γ, the interaction between p53 and SOCS1 and phosphorylation of p53 were significantly higher than untreated cells. When knocking SOCS1 down by using SOCS1 siRNA, phosphorylation of p53 and apoptosis of intestinal epithelial cells which was induced by IFN-γ were significantly inhibited. In summary, our findings suggest that SOCS1 may promote apoptosis of intestinal epithelial cells at least partly through mediating p53 signaling.

RESUMEN

Rechargeable lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are attractive candidates for energy storage devices because they have five times the theoretical energy storage of state-of-the-art Li-ion batteries. The main problems plaguing Li-S batteries are poor cycle life and limited rate capability, caused by the insulating nature of S and the shuttle effect associated with the dissolution of intermediate lithium polysulfides. Here, we report the use of biocell-inspired polydopamine (PD) as a coating agent on both the cathode and separator to address these problems (the "systematic effects"). The PD-modified cathode and separator play key roles in facilitating ion diffusion and keeping the cathode structure stable, leading to uniform lithium deposition and a solid electrolyte interphase. As a result, an ultralong cycle performance of more than 3000 cycles, with a capacity fade of only 0.018% per cycle, was achieved at 2 C. It is believed that the systematic modification of the cathode and separator for Li-S batteries is a new strategy for practical applications.

RESUMEN

The lithium-sulfur battery is regarded as one of the most promising candidates for lithium-metal batteries with high energy density. However, dendrite Li formation and low cycle efficiency of the Li anode as well as unstable sulfur based cathode still hinder its practical application. Herein a novel electrolyte (1 m LiODFB/EC-DMC-FEC) is designed not only to address the above problems of Li anode but also to match sulfur cathode perfectly, leading to extraordinary electrochemical performances. Using this electrolyte, lithium|lithium cells can cycle stably for above 2000 hours and the average Coulumbic efficiency reaches 98.8 %. Moreover, the Li-S battery delivers a reversible capacity of about 1400 mAh g(-1) sulfur with retention of 89 % for 1100 cycles at 1 C, and a capacity above 1100 mAh g(-1) sulfur at 10 C. The more advantages of this cell system are its outstanding cycle stability at 60 °C and no self-discharge phenomena.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the incidence, clinical features, and treatment of perinatal cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection, as well as the factors affecting the therapeutic effect of ganciclovir. METHODS: The clinical data of 237 infants who were hospitalized and diagnosed with perinatal CMV infection from 2008 to 2012 were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS: The clinical features of infants with perinatal CMV infection and the proportion of such infants in all hospitalized infants showed no significant differences across the five years. In most infants, two or more systems were involved, and CMV hepatitis plus CMV pneumonia was most common (43.1%). The results of pathogen detection showed that the percentage of the infants with positive blood CMV-IgM and blood/urine CMV-DNA was 3.8%, while 90.3% of all infants had positive blood CMV-IgM alone and 5.9% had positive blood/urine CMV-DNA alone. A total of 197 infants were treated with ganciclovir, and the cure rate was 88.3%. An abnormal history of pregnancy (OR=6.191, 95% CI: 1.597-24.002) and liver involvement before medication (OR=3.705, 95% CI: 1.537-8.931) were the independent risk factors affecting the therapeutic effect of ganciclovir in infants with perinatal CMV infection. CONCLUSIONS: The epidemiological characteristics of perinatal CMV infection have remained generally stable for the last 5 years. CMV often involves several organs or systems, especially the liver and lung. Ganciclovir has a significant efficacy in the treatment of perinatal CMV infection, and an abnormal history of pregnancy and liver involvement before medication can increase the risk of ganciclovir resistance in infants with perinatal CMV infection.

RESUMEN

CD133 is one of the most common stem cell markers, and functional single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of CD133 may modulate its gene functions and thus cancer risk and patient survival. We hypothesized that potentially functional CD133 SNPs are associated with gastric cancer (GC) risk and survival. To test this hypothesis, we conducted a case-control study of 371 GC patients and 313 cancer-free controls frequency-matched by age, sex, and ethnicity. We genotyped four selected, potentially functional CD133 SNPs (rs2240688A>C, rs7686732C>G, rs10022537T>A, and rs3130C>T) and used logistic regression analysis for associations of these SNPs with GC risk and Cox hazards regression analysis for survival. We found that compared with the miRNA binding site rs2240688 AA genotype, AC + CC genotypes were associated with significantly increased GC risk (adjusted OR = 1.52, 95% CI = 1.09-2.13); for another miRNA binding site rs3130C>T SNP, the TT genotype was associated with significantly reduced GC risk (adjusted OR = 0.68, 95% CI = 0.48-0.97), compared with CC + CT genotypes. In all patients, the risk rs3130 TT variant genotype was significantly associated with overall survival (OS) (adjusted P(trend) = 0.016 and 0.007 under additive and recessive models, respectively). These findings suggest that these two CD133 miRNA binding site variants, rs2240688 and rs3130, may be potential biomarkers for genetic susceptibility to GC and possible predictors for survival in GC patients but require further validation by larger studies.

RESUMEN

CONTEXT: Several previous studies proposed a link between particulate matter (PM) pollution and mitochondrial DNA copy number (MtDNAcn) and telomere length (TL). However, this evidence is quite limited and inconsistent, especially on how the particle size affects the associations and on whether there exists such an association with gaseous pollutants. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the short-term associations of size-fractionated PM and gaseous pollutants with blood MtDNAcn and TL. METHODS: We conducted a longitudinal panel study involving 6 repeated measurements among 35 Type 2 diabetes patients in Shanghai, China from April to June 2013. We measured the real-time concentrations of size-fractionated PM (0.25-10 µm) and criteria gaseous pollutants. Blood MtDNAcn and TL were tested by a quantitative real-time PCR-based assay. Linear mixed-effect models were used to explore their short-term associations using multiple lag periods, after controlling for individual characteristics, time trends and weather conditions. RESULTS: In general, there were inverse but statistically non-significant associations between all pollutants and MtDNAcn. Coarse PM appeared to be more closely linked with MtDNAcn than smaller PM. The associations between various air pollutants and TL were generally positive but very weak. There were no clear lag patterns for these associations. The associations between air pollutants and MtDNAcn and TL were strengthened but still not significant among those who did not take statins regularly. CONCLUSIONS: This study did not support short-term associations of PM or gaseous pollutants with blood MtDNAcn and TL in type 2 diabetes patients.
