RESUMEN

Diffeomorphic shape registration allows for the seamless geometric alignment of shapes. In this study, we demonstrated the use of a registration algorithm to automatically seed anthropological landmarks on the CT images of the pelvis. We found a high correlation between manually and automatically seeded landmarks. The registration algorithm makes it possible to achieve a high degree of automation with the potential to reduce operator errors in the seeding of anthropological landmarks. The results of this study represent a promising step forward in effectively defining the anthropological measures of the human skeleton.

RESUMEN

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease with significant morbidity and mortality. Recent studies suggest that modulation of adenosine signaling, a potent immunosuppressive pathway, is a promising approach for treatment of RA. Extracellular adenosine can come from two sources: transport of intracellular adenosine and hydrolysis of extracellular adenine nucleotides by CD73. In this study, we investigated the susceptibility of CD73-deficient C57BL/6 mice to collagen-induced arthritis (CIA), a well-established mouse model of RA. Our data demonstrated that CD73-deficient mice are significantly more susceptible to CIA than wild-type mice. CD73 deficiency resulted in an increased production of proinflammatory cytokines in the joints, increased Th1 T cell responses, and increased joint destruction. Surprisingly, this was accompanied by delayed anticollagen IgG responses, suggesting defective isotype class switching in CD73-deficient mice. Using bone marrow chimera mice, we demonstrated that CD73 expression on nonhematopoietic cells, but not on hematopoietic cells, was important for protection from CIA. We further demonstrated that administration of a selective A2A adenosine receptor agonist to CD73-deficient mice resulted in arthritis incidence similar to wild-type mice in support of a protective role for A2A signaling. Taken together, our study identifies CD73 as an important regulator of CIA in mice. It also strengthens the notion that CD73-generated adenosine by nonhematopoietic cells plays a protective role in RA and suggests that strategies able to enhance CD73 activity or expression levels may be a valid therapeutic option.

RESUMEN

This report analyses data on 177 renal biopsies (RB) performed in 174 children in the East Bohemian region throughout 1997-2008. The primary aim was to evaluate the diagnostic benefit of the procedure, the secondary aim was to assess the safety of RB and prevalence of clinical complications. The patients' mean age at the time of RB was 12.77 +/- 4.17 years; range 1 to 19 years; male to female ratio 1.17:1. Haematuria was the most common indication for RB. All RBs were performed by a single consultant nephrologist. 27 biopsies in 27 patients (15.3 %) in 1997 were performed under X-ray control, the remaining 150 RB (84.7 %) under ultrasound guidance. The mean annual number of RBs performed in 1997-2001 was significantly higher than in the 2003-2008 period (21.6 +/- 5.5 versus 9.9 +/- 1.2; p=0.0003). All samples were diagnostic. The mean number of glomeruli was 23.5 +/- 11.4 (range 4-55) per sample. The RB resulted in information yielding a definite diagnosis and/or prognosis in 173 children (99.4 %). The most frequent diagnoses were IgA nephropathy (n=41; 23.5 %), mesangioproliferative glomerulonephritis (n=31; 17.8 %) and thin basement membrane glomerulopathy (n=22; 12.6 %). No major complications were encountered and only minor complications occurred in 43 cases (24.2 %), not requiring medical intervention. In conclusion, the present practice of RB in children is safe, with high clinical benefit.

RESUMEN

The pilot dose survey on paediatric general radiography, fluoroscopy and CT procedures was performed in four university hospitals. The analysis of data was focused on the radiography and CT imaging of head, chest, abdomen, pelvis and spine and fluoroscopic procedures of gastrointestinal and urinary tracts. The survey was conducted by the National Radiation Protection Institute. Two hospitals exported data from the patient dose management system, while the others collected the data manually. The methodology of diagnostic reference levels assessment was proposed and tested. Local diagnostic reference levels were calculated in terms of air kerma-area product $P_{KA}$, CT air kerma-length product $P_{KL,CT}$ and volumetric CT air kerma index $C_{VOL}$. The lack of procedure standardisation, e.g. in tube voltage setting irrespective of patient's weight, was revealed at one hospital. Dose and exposure parameters distributions with respect to patient's anatomical constitution are presented in this article. In future, this pilot study will be a base for national survey of paediatric diagnostic reference levels.

RESUMEN

Ossification of costal cartilages is one of many changes reflecting their ageing. It is found only in a limited percentage of population and used to begin at various ages. Shape of these ossification changes is different in men and women. Due to heterogeneity of data in literature and scarce amount of information, we decided to evaluate the occurrence of costal cartilage ossifications in a sample of Czech population. Use of roentgenograms of ossification focuses was based on their contrast in x-rays. We have studied altogether 1044 X-rays archived by Department of Radiology at the Teaching Hospital in Hradec Kráov'e. This set comprised roentgenograms of both men and women in age range from 10 to 95 years. Ossification changes of costal cartilages were described on 18 roentgenograms from dissection material as well. These rtg pictures were taken from chest plates and costal cartilages which were obtained from Department of Anatomy and Department of Forensic Medicine at Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Králové. In this sample of Czech population we confirmed an occurrence of sexual dimorphism of ossified costal cartilages. Statistical evaluation revealed that beginning of these changes depends on the age and sex.

RESUMEN

Mineralization and ossification in the human costal cartilages were studied radiologically. The aim of our study was to evaluate differences between males and females with respect to patterns of costal cartilage calcification and also with respect to ageing. Material for this study consists of 1044 chest and abdominal radiograms of the Czech population from the Department of Radiology (537 males and 507 females). Further radiograms of 18 chest plates were obtained at routine necropsy of cadavers. The radiograms were examined for pattern of ossification of the costal cartilage. The first rib cartilages were not considered because there are no sex differences. The lower ribs exhibit sexual dimorphism. Mineralization and ossification changes appear at the end of puberty and their occurrence increases with age. The sexual difference in pattern of human costal cartilages is statistically significant and thus highly predictive of sex determination.

RESUMEN

Frangible projectiles for firearms, which break apart on impact, are mainly used by law enforcement agencies for training purposes, but can also be used for police interventions. Apart from the usual absence of lead in the projectiles, the main advantage of using frangible projectiles is the reduced risk of ricochet after impact with a hard target. This article describes the design and function of frangible projectiles, and describes gunshot wounds caused by ultra-frangible projectiles which fragment after penetration of soft tissues. Shooting experiments performed by the authors confirmed that differences in the geometry and technology of frangible projectiles can significantly modify their wounding effects. Some frangible projectiles have minimal wounding effects because they remain compact after penetration of soft tissues, comparable to standard fully jacketed projectiles. However, a number of ultra-frangible projectiles disintegrate into very small fragments after impact with a soft tissue substitute. In shooting experiments, we found that the terminal behavior of selected ultra-frangible projectiles was similar in a block of ballistic gel and the soft tissues of the hind leg of a pig, except that the degree of disintegration was less in the gel.

RESUMEN

The aim of our study was to evaluate differences between males and females based on patterns of costal cartilage ossification and also with respect to ageing. We provided diagnosis of ossifications from two files of radiograms. The first group consisted of 1044 chest and abdominal radiograms of patients (537 men and 507 women), ranging in age from 10 to 95 years obtained by using conventional X-ray technique. The second group was a set of 55 radiograms of chest plate fragments of cadavers (29 men and 26 women) aged from 15 to 98, obtained by using soft X-ray imaging in the skiagraphic-skiascopic unit. Ossifications were identified in more than 80% of the cases. They appear in puberta and their occurrence increases with age. The peripheral ossification pattern, typically the male pattern, is characterized by subperichondral deposits which contour the upper and lower margin of cartilage. The female, central lingual ossification pattern, is characterized by the pyramidal (lingual) shape of ossifications with a peak towards the sternum. The existence of another typical female central globular model of ossification was not confirmed in the file of cadavers. Central globular foci were found in both sexes (62% of women and 34% of men) from the 3rd decade. In the sample of Caucasian men and women (Czech population) we detected a frequent occurrence of costal cartilage ossification. Peripheral and central lingual patterns are highly predictive for sex determination. Globular loci of ossifications can be used for age estimation.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Hydronephrosis leads to deterioration of renal function. As urinary N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase (U-NAG) activity is considered a sensitive marker of renal tubular impairment, our aim was to measure U-NAG in children with hydronephrosis and to look for a relationship among selected clinical parameters. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We studied 31 children (22 boys and 9 girls, mean age 2.3 +/- 2.5 years) with hydronephrosis grade 1-4 that had U-NAG/creatinine ratio (U-NAG/Cr) measured. RESULTS: The U-NAG/Cr was significantly higher in patients with hydronephrosis compared to reference data (p = 0.002). There was no difference in U-NAG/Cr between children with unilateral and bilateral hydronephrosis (p = 0.51). There was no significant difference in U-NAG/Cr between children with grades 1-3 (pooled data) and grade 4, respectively (p = 0.89). There was no correlation between U-NAG/Cr and the grade of hydronephrosis (r = 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: U-NAG/Cr is increased in children with hydronephrosis grade 1-4, and there is no relationship with the grade of hydronephrosis. U-NAG is a useful marker of renal tubular dysfunction, however its relationship with the degree of kidney damage in patients with hydronephrosis should be considered as doubtful.
