RESUMEN

The data we present consist of an updated checklist of the Azorean Staphylinidae (Insecta, Coleoptera), by compiling new identified records of three recent published studies about Azorean arthropods. In general, the records were obtained from different standardised sampling campaigns and from non-standardised observations. The presented records were collected between July 1999 and September 2020, in five islands of the Azores Archipelago: Flores, Graciosa, Terceira, São Miguel and Santa Maria. The samples include records collected in several habitat types, such as native, mixed and exotic forests, pasturelands and agricultural areas (maize fields, orchards, citrus areas and vineyards). This inventory represents the most updated checklist and knowledge about Staphylinidae in Azores and new information includes one new exotic rove-beetle for the Azores (Thecturotatenuissima Casey, 1893) and seven new islands records.

Background: The dataset we present consists of an inventory compiling all records and knowledge about Staphylinidae (Insecta, Coleoptera) in the Azores and is part of a long-term monitoring performed between 1990 and 2015 in different habitat types of eight islands of the Azores Archipelago. Most samples come from the BALA project (Biodiversity of Arthropods from the Laurisilva of Azores) that sampled native forests in the Azores. Additional sampled habitats include exotic forests, intensive and semi-natural pasturelands, orchards, caves and lava flows. Most of the records (about 96.7%) were collected in standardised sampling campaigns, which included pitfall traps and beating transect protocols. Non-standardised records are based on hand-collecting and sifting, as well as cave, colour and malaise traps. New information: We provide a long-term inventory of Staphylinidae (Insecta, Coleoptera) collected in the course of several standardised sampling campaigns and recorded with non-standardised methods. We collected a total of 10744 specimens belonging to 69 identified species of Staphylinidae, which represents 51% of the species known from the Azores Archipelago. Four endemic species were sampled, representing 40% of the known Azorean endemic species. From this dataset, seven species are new for the Azores: Aleocharafunebris Wollaston, 1864; Amischaforcipata Mulsant & Rey, 1873; Blediusunicornis (Germar, 1825); Carpelimustroglodytes (Erichson, 1840); Cyphaseminulum (Erichson, 1839); Paraphloeostibagayndahensis (MacLeay, 1871); Tachyporuscaucasicus Kolenati, 1846. We also registered a total of 66 new island records for eight Azorean islands. This contribution continues a series of publications on the distribution and abundance of Azorean arthropods. We also provide an updated list of Azorean rove-beetles (Staphylinidae) that now includes 136 species, ten of them considered Azorean endemics.

Background: The Azores is a remote oceanic archipelago of nine islands which belongs to the Macaronesia biogeographical region hosting a unique biodiversity. The present Azorean landscape is strongly modified by the presence of man and only in small areas, where the soil or climate was too rough, have primitive conditions remained unchanged. Despite the fact that most of the Azorean native habitats are now lost, a large number of endemic species are still present and need urgent conservation. The present checklist of terrestrial and freshwater arthropods of the Azores Archipelago is based on all known published literature. The main goal of this work is to list, as rigorously as possible, all the known terrestrial and freshwater arthropods of the Azores. In this way, we are contributing to solve the 'Linnaean' shortfall, i.e. an incomplete taxonomic description of species-level diversity and the Wallacean Biodiversity Shortfall, the incomplete species distribution knowledge. New information: The checklist includes new records of arthropods at island and archipelago levels that were published in the last twelve years. Compared to the last checklist of Azorean arthropods (Borges et al. 2010b), a total of 217 taxa (species and subspecies) are added.Currently, the total number of terrestrial and freshwater arthropod species and subspecies in the Azores is estimated to be 2420 taxa belonging to 14 classes, 53 orders, 440 families, 1556 genera, 2400 species and 149 individual subspecies.The most diverse orders of Azorean arthropods are: Coleoptera (585 taxa), Diptera (423 taxa), Hemiptera (338 taxa), Hymenoptera (163 taxa), Lepidoptera (159 taxa) and Araneae (133 taxa).A total of 276 endemic taxa are currently known (232 species and 44 subspecies), belonging to eight classes and 22 orders. São Miguel, Terceira and Pico are the islands with higher number of endemic species and subspecies. In the Azores, the number of native non-endemic taxa is 793 taxa, totalling 1069 indigenous taxa. Compared to the other nearest Macaronesian archipelagos (Madeira and Canaries), the Azorean arthropod fauna is characterised by a lower percentage of endemism (endemics/indigenous: 26% in Azores, 47% in Madeira Archipelago and 42% in Canary Islands) and a high proportion of exotic introduced taxa (39% in Azores, 19% in Madeira Archipelago and 8% in Canary Islands).Based on recent IUCN Red-listing of Azorean arthropods, a large fraction of the endemic taxa is under high threat.

The Chinese species of the Tachinus longicornis-group of the subgenus Tachinoderus Motschulsky are reviewed with six species being treated, of which five are described as new: T. bilobus Chang, Li, Yin sp. nov. (Hubei, Sichuan), T. centralis Chang, Li, Yin Schülke sp. nov. (Shaanxi, Hubei, Chongqing, and Sichuan), T. curvipennis Chang, Li, Yin sp. nov. (Hubei), T. lobutulus Chang, Li, Yin sp. nov. (Yunnan), and T. tangliangi Chang, Li, Yin Schülke sp. nov. (Yunnan; Thailand: Chiang Mai). Numerous new records are provided for T. ohbayashii Li, Zhao Sakai, a species originally described from West Tianmu Mountain, Zhejiang. An identification key and a distributional map for the Chinese species are given.

(Shaanxi, Zhejiang, Hubei, Fujian, Guangxi, Chongqing, Sichuan, Yunnan, Vietnam: Sa Pa), T. granosus Chang, Li, Yin Schülke, sp. nov. (Shaanxi, Gansu, Sichuan), T. maculosus Chang, Li, Yin Schülke, sp. nov. (Yunnan), T. meniscus Chang, Li, Yin Schülke, sp. nov. (Hunan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan), T. qian Chang, Li Yin, sp. nov. (Guizhou), T. songxiaobini Chang, Li Yin, sp. nov. (Yunnan), and T. yunnanensis Chang, Li, Yin Schülke, sp. nov. (Yunnan; Laos: Phongsaly). Main characters distinguishing species are the shapes of the terminal tergites and sternites of both sexes, and morphological differences in the aedeagi. New collecting data for eight known species: T. beckeri Ullrich, T. grandicollis (Bernhauer), T. laosensis Katayama Li, T. naomii Li, T. nigriceps Sharp, T. pseudobirmanus Schülke, T. sugayai Schülke and T. yushanensis Campbell are given. Tachinus laosensis Katayama Li is recorded from China for the first time. An identification key to and distributional maps of the Chinese species of the T. nepalensis group are provided.

More than 540 specimens of the genus Ischnosoma Stephens (Coleptera, Staphylinidae, Tachyporinae) from Nepal are revised. Four new species are described and illustrated: Ischnosoma bhojpur Kocian Schülke, sp. n., I. hirthei Kocian Schülke, sp. n., I. jumla Kocian Schülke, sp. n. and I. schmidti Kocian Schülke, sp. n. Additional records of previously described species are reported. The distributions of the Nepalese species are mapped. Ischnosoma gratiosum (Cameron, 1932) is recorded from Nepal for the first time. A revised key to the Ischnosoma species of Nepal is presented.

More than 1100 specimens of the genus Ischnosoma Stephens, 1829, from China and Taiwan are revised. In all, 29 species and one subspecies are recognized. Seven new species are described and illustrated: Ischnosoma zipapertum sp. n., I. vicinum sp. n., I. foedum sp. n., I. involutum sp. n., I. yunnanum sp. n., I. abstrusum sp. n., and I. gemellum sp. n. Additional records of previously described species are reported. The distributions of all the species are mapped. Four species, Ischnosoma dicoidale discoidale (Sharp, 1888), I. faciatocolle (Champion, 1922), I. hieroboam Kocian, 2003, and I. rosti (Bernhauer, 1923), are recorded from China for the first time. A revised key to the Ischnosoma species of China and Taiwan is presented.

RESUMEN

The Chinese species of the silphaeformis group of the genus Tachinus Gravenhorst are revised with fifteen species being treated. Thirteen of them are described as new: T. armatus Feng & Li, sp. n. (Sichuan), T. cavazzutii Feng, Li & Schülke, sp. n. (Sichuan), T. coronatus Feng, Li & Schülke, sp. n. (Ningxia, Qinghai), T. hercules Feng, Li & Schülke, sp. n. (Sichuan), T. hujiayaoi Feng, Li & Schülke, sp. n. (Shaanxi), T. jiuzhaigouensis Feng, Li & Schülke, sp. n. (Sichuan), T. linzhiensis Feng & Li, sp. n. (Tibet), T. maderianus Feng & Li, sp. n. (Sichuan), T. mengdaensis Feng, Li & Schülke, sp. n. (Qinghai), T. oblongoelytratus Feng & Li, sp. n. (Sichuan), T. parahercules Feng, Li & Schülke, sp. n. (Sichuan), T. paralinzhiensis Feng & Li, sp. n. (Tibet), and T. yini Feng, Li & Schülke, sp. n. (Sichuan). The two known species are redescribed based on the holotypes and additional material. Illustrations of the habitus and major diagnostic characters, distributional maps, and identification keys of all species are included.
