The reinforcer pathology model posits that core behavioral economic mechanisms, including delay discounting and behavioral economic demand, underlie adverse health decisions and related clinical disorders. Extensions beyond substance use disorder and obesity, however, are limited. Using a reinforcer pathology framework, this study evaluates medical adherence decisions in patients with multiple sclerosis. Participants completed behavioral economic measures, including delay discounting, probability discounting, and a medication purchase task. A medical decision-making task was also used to evaluate how sensitivity to mild side effect risk and efficacy contributed to the likelihood of taking a hypothetical disease-modifying therapy. Less steep delay discounting and more intense (greater) medication demand were independently associated with greater adherence to the medication decision-making procedure. More generally, the pattern of interrelations between the medication-specific and general behavioral economic metrics was consistent with and contributes to the reinforcer pathology model. Additional research is warranted to expand these models to different populations and health behaviors, including those of a positive health orientation (i.e., medication adherence).

Probability discounting, a subset of behavioral economic research, has a rich history of investigating choice behavior, especially as it pertains to risky decision making. Gambling involves both choice behavior and risky decision making which makes it an ideal behavior to investigate with discounting tasks. With proximity to a casino being one of the biggest risk factors, studies into the American Indian population have been a neglected population of study. Using outcome measures from a pre-scan probability discounting task, the current study equated the scan task to evaluate behavioral and neurobiological differences in gamblers vs. non-gamblers. Gamblers showed differences in behavioral tasks (lower discounting rates) but not in patterns of neural activation.

The role of human behavior to thwart transmission of infectious diseases like COVID-19 is evident. Psychological and behavioral science are key areas to understand decision-making processes underlying engagement in preventive health behaviors. Here we adapt well validated methods from behavioral economic discounting and demand frameworks to evaluate variables (e.g., delay, cost, probability) known to impact health behavior engagement. We examine the contribution of these mechanisms within a broader response class of behaviors reflecting adherence to public health recommendations made during the COVID-19 pandemic. Four crowdsourced samples (total N = 1,366) completed individual experiments probing a response class including social (physical) distancing, facemask wearing, COVID-19 testing, and COVID-19 vaccination. We also measure the extent to which choice architecture manipulations (e.g., framing, opt-in/opt-out) may promote (or discourage) behavior engagement. We find that people are more likely to socially distance when specified activities are framed as high risk, that facemask use during social interaction decreases systematically with greater social relationship, that describing delay until testing (rather than delay until results) increases testing likelihood, and that framing vaccine safety in a positive valence improves vaccine acceptance. These findings collectively emphasize the flexibility of methods from diverse areas of behavioral science for informing public health crisis management.

Levels of weight gain have hit an epidemic level with rates of overweight and obesity diagnoses topping all-time highs. Elevated body weight has been linked to increased rates of cardiac problems, blood pressure issues, and risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Leptin, a hormone produced by the body that is involved in energy balance by inhibiting hunger has been implicated as an underlying mechanism that differentially contributes to food-seeking motivation. Using a scientifically validated animal model of obesity, the fatty Zucker rat, which has mutated leptin receptor genes, leptin's role in behavioral motivation can be assessed. Animals were on a 2 -h food access restriction with one-hour access to rewards in session and one hour of free-feeding access. Pre-session and post-session food access differences were evaluated in looking at motivation for food rewards during satiation while responding on differing levels of fixed-ratio schedules. The results showed robust differential behavior from satiation, demonstrating a basis for a biological mechanism involving leptin sensitivity that could underlie obesity. Although further experimentation is needed, understanding leptin could help bridge the gap in our understanding of satiation and non-satiation.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a neurodegenerative disorder that causes a wide range of symptoms, which, if left untreated, worsen over time. Despite the availability of effective medications, however, many MS patients fail to take their medications. One possibility is that these patients fail to follow through on treatment recommendations because they do not value these treatments-despite their effectiveness. Prior studies have used principles of microeconomic demand to quantify subjects' valuation of commodities such as alcohol and cigarettes. The current study examined MS patients' microeconomic demand for effective treatments. Patients' willingness to purchase this effective medication was well described by behavioral economic models and was significantly related to MS knowledge and select components of adherence determination. The reinforcer pathologies model of addiction posits that two characteristic patterns of operant behavior characterize addiction. Specifically, individuals suffering from addiction have elevated levels of behavioral economic demand for their substances of abuse and have an elevated tendency to devalue delayed rewards (reflected in high delay discounting rates). Prior research has demonstrated that these behavioral economic markers are significant predictors of many of college students' alcohol-related problems. Delay discounting, however, is a complex behavioral performance likely undergirded by multiple behavioral processes. Emerging analytical approaches have isolated the role of participants' sensitivity to changes in reinforcer magnitude and changes in reinforcer delay. The current study uses these analytic approaches to compare participants' discounting of money versus alcohol, and to build regression models that leverage these new insights to predict a wider range of college students' alcohol related problems. Using these techniques, we were able to 1) demonstrate that individuals differed in their sensitivity to magnitudes of alcohol versus money, but not sensitivity to delays to those commodities and 2) that we could use our behavioral economic measures to predict a range of students' alcohol related problems.
