Accurate diagnosis of cerebral ischemia severity is crucial for clinical decision-making. Laser speckle contrast imaging based cerebral blood flow imaging can help assess the severity of cerebral ischemia by monitoring changes in blood flow. In this study, we simulated hyperacute ischemia in rats, isolating arterial and venous flow-related signals from cortical vasculature. Pearson correlation was used to examine the correlation between damaged vessels. Granger causality analysis was utilized to investigate causality correlation in ischemic vessels. Resting state analysis revealed a negative Pearson correlation between regional arteries and veins. Following cerebral ischemia induction, a positive artery-vein correlation emerged, which vanished after blood flow reperfusion. Granger causality analysis demonstrating enhanced causality coefficients for middle artery-vein pairs during occlusion, with a stronger left-right arterial effect than that of right-left, which persisted after reperfusion. These processing approaches amplify the understanding of cerebral ischemic images, promising potential future diagnostic advancements.

Pediatric basilar skull fractures (BSFs) are a rare type of traumatic head injury that can cause debilitating complications without prompt treatment. Here, we sought to review the literature and characterize the clinical features, management, and outcomes of pediatric BSFs. We identified 21 relevant studies, excluding reviews, meta-analyses, and non-English articles. The incidence of pediatric BSFs ranged from 0.0001% to 7.3%, with falls from multi-level heights and traffic accidents being the primary causes (9/21). The median presentation age ranged from 3.2 to 12.8 years, and the mean age of patients across all studies was 8.68 years. Up to 55% of pediatric BSFs presented with intracranial hematoma/hemorrhage, along with pneumocephalus and edema. Cranial nerve palsies were a common complication (9/21), with the facial nerve injured most frequently (7/21). While delayed cranial nerve palsy was reported in a few studies (4/21), most resolved within three months post-admission. Other complications included CSF leaks (10/21) and meningitis (4/21). Management included IV fluids, antiemetics, and surgery (8/21) to treat the fracture directly, address a CSF leak, or achieve cranial nerve compression. Despite their rarity, pediatric skull base fractures are associated with clinical complications, including CSF leaks and cranial nerve palsies. Given that some of these complications may be delayed, patient education is critical.

Schizophrenia is increasingly recognized as a disorder with altered integration between large-scale functional networks and cortical-subcortical pathways. This spatial long-distance information communication must be associated with white matter (WM) fiber bundles. With accumulating evidence that WM functional signals reflect the intrinsic neural activities, how the deep callosal organization modulates cortical functional activities through WM remains unclear in schizophrenia. Using a data-driven method, we identified nine WM and gray matter (GM) functional networks, and then parcellated corpus callosum into distinct sub-regions. Combining functional connectivity and fiber tracking analysis, we estimated the structural and functional connectivity changes of callosal-WM-cortical circuits in schizophrenia. We observed higher structural and functional connectivity between corpus callosum, WM and GM functional networks involving visual network (visual processing), executive control network (executive controls), ventral attention network (processing of salience), and limbic network (emotion processing) in schizophrenia compared to healthy controls. We also found nine abnormal pathways of callosal-WM-cortical circuits involving the above networks and default mode network (self-related thought). These results highlight the role of connectivity deficits in callosal-WM-cortical circuits may play in understanding the delusions, hallucinations and cognitive impairment of schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: An infection (COVID-19) without any specific cure makes the people more vulnerable to get affected due to insufficient knowledge and unhealthy practices. In this scenario, healthcare students can act as reliable information providers. This study aimed to assess the knowledge and perception about COVID-19 among medical and allied health science students. METHODS: A web-based cross sectional survey was conducted during February and March 2020. A 24-item survey was developed and randomly distributed among the study population. Descriptive statistics was applied to represent participant characteristics and Chi-square test was used to evaluate the level of association among variables with a significance level of p < 0.01. RESULTS: Total, 97.95% (715/730) participants completed the survey. High proportion of students were from pharmacy (45.73%) followed by medical (22.52%), physiotherapy, nursing and dental background. Majority of participants were having adequate knowledge while about 18% had partial knowledge about the symptoms of severe COVID-19 cases. Students have shown a positive perception of COVID-19 prevention and control while few invalid responses related to the use of herbal medicines or garlic were noted. About 50% had rightly stated that, the antibiotics and vaccine are not effective in COVID-19 infection at present. CONCLUSION: As the COVID-19 cases are rapidly increasing worldwide, it is essential to improve the knowledge and beliefs among general public to prevent its spread. Health care students with their education background and basic understanding about COVID-19 can play a significant role by making community people aware about the seriousness of this pandemic situation.

Successfully tackling the obstacles that constrain research on neonatal rats is important for studying the differences in outcomes seen in pediatric spinal cord injuries (SCIs) compared to adult SCIs. In addition, reliably introducing therapies into the target cells of the central nervous system (CNS) can be challenging, and inaccuracies can compromise the efficacy of the study or therapy. This protocol combines viral vector technology with a novel surgical technique to accurately introduce gene therapies into neonatal rats at postnatal day 5. Here, a virus engineered for retrograde transport (retroAAV2) of Cre is introduced at the axon terminals of corticospinal neurons in the spinal cord, where it is subsequently transported to the cell bodies. A double-floxed inverted orientation (DIO) designer receptor exclusively activated by designer drug(s) (DREADD) virus is then injected into the somatomotor cortex of the brain. This double-infection technique promotes the expression of the DREADDs only in the co-infected corticospinal tract (CST) neurons. Thus, the simultaneous co-injection of the somatomotor cortex and cervical CST terminals is a valid method for studying the chemogenetic modulation of recovery following cervical SCI models in neonatal rats.
