RESUMEN

Two antimalaria alkaloids, febrifugine and isofebrifugine, were successfully separated from total alkaloids of Dichroa febrifuga roots by one-step preparative countercurrent chromatography with a selected biphasic solvent system. The selected biphasic solvent system was composed of chloroform: methanol: water (2:1:1, v/v) according to partition performance of the two target components. Selection of biphasic solvent system was conducted by high performance liquid chromatography combined with high performance thin layer chromatography, which greatly assisted the screening procedure for biphasic solvent system. Totally, 50 mg of total alkaloid was separated by one-step preparative countercurrent chromatography, yielding 12 mg of febrifugine and 9 mg of isofebrifugine with more than 98.0% purity, respectively.

RESUMEN

Medical fungi polysaccharides belong to a very important species of biological macromolecules, which are the basic substances that effectively maintain and ensure the normal operation of biological life activities. However, research on extraction and biological activity of Inonotus cuticularis polysaccharides has never been reported. In this study, the optimum yield of Inonotus cuticularis polysaccharides was determined by the orthogonal experimental design. The highest yield of 3.10±0.06 % was obtained with extraction temperature of 80 °C, extraction time of 150 min, and water to raw material ratio of 30 mL/g and repeated twice. After deproteinization for 5 times, the protein removal rate reached 70.10±1.75 %, and the content of polysaccharides and protein were 46.64 and 0.42 %. Infrared spectrometer indicated that Inonotus cuticularis polysaccharides are typical ß-pyranose with characteristic peaks of polysaccharides. Subsequently, the activities of scavenging free radicals for the deproteinated polysaccharides were studied. When the concentration of Inonotus cuticularis polysaccharides was 0.3 mg/mL, the scavenging activities of the sample on DPPH. , . OH, ABTS.+ and O2 .- reached 83.67±0.27, 65.21±4.82, 43.45±1.36 and 80.28±2.30 %, respectively, and the reducing power reached 0.46±0.01. The IC50 values scavenging DPPH. , . OH, ABTS.+ and O2 .- were 0.139±0.13, 0.162±0.14, 0.317±0.30 and 0.121±0.10 mg/mL, respectively. Results showed that Inonotus cuticularis polysaccharides present potential stronger antioxidant activities, especially .OH scavenging activity and reducing power. Experimental results could provide research basis of Inonotus cuticularis polysaccharides for further exploitation and utilization.

RESUMEN

Though an isotope approach could be beneficial for better understanding the biogeochemical cycle of gallium (Ga), an analogue of the monoisotopic element aluminum (Al), the geochemistry of Ga isotopes has not been widely elaborated. We developed a two-step method for purifying Ga from geological (biological) samples for precise measurement of Ga isotope ratio using multicollector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS). Ga was thoroughly separated from other matrix elements using two chromatographic columns loaded with AG 1-X4 and Ln-spec resin, respectively. The separation method was carefully calibrated using both synthetic and natural samples and validated by assessing the extraction yield (99.8 ± 0.8%, 2SD, n = 23) and the reproducibility (2SD uncertainty better than 0.05‰, n = 116) of the measured isotopic ratio (expressed as δ71Ga). The validation of the whole protocol, together with instrumental analysis, was confirmed by the investigation of the matrix effect, the result of a standard addition experiment, and the comparison of Ga isotope measurement on two mass spectrometers-Nu Plasma II and Neptune Plus. Although the measurements using the sample-standard bracketing (SSB) correction method on both instruments resulted in identical δ71Ga values for reference materials, the modified empirical external normalization (MEEN) method gave relatively better precision compared to SSB on Neptune. Our preliminary results showed large variation of δ71Ga (up to 1.83‰) for 10 standards, with higher values in industrially produced materials, implying potential application of Ga isotopes.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of sirolimus-based immunosuppression vs. conventional prophylaxis therapy in preventing cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection or disease in liver transplantation recipients. METHODS: One hundred and twenty-seven consecutive liver transplant recipients, with a minimum of one-yr follow-up from 2008 to 2013 in the first affiliated hospital of Nanchang University, were retrospectively divided into the sirolimus-treated (n = 51) and ganciclovir-treated (n = 76) groups. The CMV incidence, rejection events, and survival rate were compared. RESULTS: The overall incidences of CMV events were decreased but did not reach statistical significance in the sirolimus arm compared with the ganciclovir arm (p > 0.05) at one yr after liver transplantation. There was no significant difference in the rejection incidence and survival rates between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: Sirolimus-based immunosuppression had a lower incidence of CMV infection compared with conventional prophylaxis therapy and did not increase rejection risks and mortality after liver transplantation, indicating that with the use of an mammalian target-of-rapamycin (mTOR)-inhibitor, CMV prophylaxis may be dispensable.

RESUMEN

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is one of the most common hematopoietic malignancies and the development of new drugs is crucial for the treatment of this lethal disease. Iheyamine A is a nonmonoterpenoid azepinoindole alkaloid from the ascidian Polycitorella sp., and its anticancer mechanism has not been investigated in leukemias. Herein, we showed the significant antileukemic activity of L42 in AML cell lines HEL, HL-60 and THP-1. The IC50 values were 0.466±0.099 µM, 0.356±0.023 µM, 0.475±0.084 µM in the HEL, HL-60 and THP-1 cell lines, respectively, which were lower than the IC50 (2.594±0.271 µM) in the normal liver cell line HL-7702. Furthermore, L42 significantly inhibited the growth of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from an AML patient. In vivo, L42 effectively suppressed leukemia progression in a mouse model induced by Friend murine leukemia virus (F-MuLV). Mechanistically, we showed that L42 induced cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in leukemia cell lines. RNA sequencing analysis of L42-treated THP-1 cells revealed that the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were enriched in the cell cycle and apoptosis and predominantly enriched in the PI3K/AKT pathway. Accordingly, L42 decreased the expression of the phospho-PI3K (p85), phospho-AKT and phospho-FOXO3a. Docking and CETSA analysis indicated that L42 bound to the PI3K isoform p110α (PIK3CA), which was implicated in the suppression of the PI3K/AKT pathway. L42 was also shown to initiate the TNF signaling-mediated apoptosis. Moreover, L42 exhibited stronger anti-leukemia activity and sensitivity in IDH2-mutant HEL cells than in IDH2-wild-type control. In conclusion, L42 effectively suppresses cell proliferation and triggers apoptosis in AML cell lines in part through inhibition of the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway to restore FOXO3a expression and activation of the TNF signaling pathway. Thus, the iheyamine A derivative L42 represents a novel candidate for AML therapy.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The first identified lysine-specific demethylase, LSD1, plays an important role in the metastatic progression of several types of cancer. AIMS: The aim of this study was to investigate LSD1, E-cadherin, and N-cadherin expression in colon cancer specimens and their clinical significance. METHODS: The expression of LSD1, E-cadherin, and N-cadherin in colon cancer specimens was determined by immunohistochemistry, and the relationship between the expression of the respective molecules and clinicopathological characteristics was analyzed. RESULTS: The positive expression rates of LSD1, E-cadherin, and N-cadherin in colon cancer specimens were 66.7 % (72/108), 85.2 % (92/108), and 41.7 % (45/108), respectively. LSD1 was significantly more highly expressed in colon cancer specimens classified as high TNM stage lesions and with distant metastasis (P < 0.05). Further analysis demonstrated that LSD1 expression was positively correlated with lymph node and distant metastases (P < 0.05). However, E-cadherin expression was significantly downregulated in colon cancer specimens classified as high TNM stage lesions and with distant metastasis (P < 0.05), whereas the expression of N-cadherin did not differ significantly according to clinical and pathological characteristics (P > 0.05). Correlation analysis revealed that LSD1 expression was negatively correlated with E-cadherin expression (r s = -0.318, P = 0.001), but not evidently correlated with N-cadherin expression (r s = 0.182, P = 0.06). Colon cancer specimens with positive LSD1 expression and negative E-cadherin expression were correlated with significantly lower overall survival. CONCLUSIONS: LSD1 showed a significantly higher expression, in contrast to the significantly lower expression of E-cadherin, in colon cancer specimens classified as high TNM stage lesions and with distant metastasis. Positive expression of LSD1 and negative expression of E-cadherin may be predictors of a worse colon cancer prognosis.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND/AIMS: To evaluate the efficacy, safety and consequent impact on quality of life of a combined-modality using intraperitoneal recombinant human endostatin, Endostar and chemotherapy in patients with refractory malignant ascites caused by gastrointestinal cancer. METHODOLOGY: Patients received combined intraperitoneal therapy repeated 3 weeks, which consisted of 5-fluorouracil 600 mg/m2 and cisplatin 30 mg/m2 on day 1-3 followed by Endostar 60 mg on day 4. RESULTS: A total of 18 patients were treated. The overall response rate was 55.6%, with a complete remission rate of 22.2%. The malignant ascites controlled rate was 77.8%. The median time to progression and overall survival was 2.6 and 4.9 months, respectively. Therapy-associated toxicities were generally mild to moderate treatment-related deaths. The mean Karnofsky performance status score was significantly improved from 59.4±2.49 at enrollment to 69.4±3.18 at 2 weeks after the first cycle of therapy (p=0.001). The mean score for overall ascites-associated symptoms was improved from 5.3±0.35 to 4.0±0.23 (p=0.004). Significant improvements of 6 individual symptoms were also observed. CONCLUSIONS: The combined-modality using intraperitoneal Endostar and chemotherapy is effective and safe in selected patients with refractory malignant ascites due to gastrointestinal cancer and significantly improves patient's quality of life with encouraging survival, which merits further investigation.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: It's unknown whether the prognostic value of admission heart rate (HR) was different in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) with or without concomitant type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). METHODS: Consecutive STEMI patients who presented within 12 hours of symptom onset were recruited from 274 hospitals in China. Participants were stratified into quartiles by admission HR. Baseline characteristics, current therapeutic recommenda- tions, laboratory biochemical tests, 30-day all-cause mortality and Cardiovascular Events (CVE, including all-cause death, reinfarction and stroke) were compared across admission HR quartiles. RESULTS: We evaluated 7294 STEMI patients, of these 820 (11.2%) had known T2DM. The admission HR quartile stratification was significantly associated with all-cause mortality and CVE regardless of T2DM status (P < 0.001 both for survival and CVE). After adjusted other risk factors, in patients without T2DM, comparing with HR <66 b.p.m., the increase of HR level was associated with worse prognosis (P < 0.05). In patients with T2DM, the hazard ratios for 30-day CVE were 1.75 (95%CI), 1.92 (95%CI), 3.00 (95%CI) in the HR of 66-76 b.p.m., 77-88 b.p.m., and >88 b.p.m., respectively. Results were similar for 30-day all-cause mortality, but the hazard ratios in Q2 (P = 0.139 and P =0.086 for survival and CVE, respectively) and Q3 groups were non-significant (P = 0.072 and P =0.033 for survival and CVE, respectively). There was a significant interaction effect of HR and T2DM on 30-day CVE mortality (P = 0.035), which was not found on all-cause mortality (P = 0.126). CONCLUSION: Admission heart rate was an important risk factor of 30-day all-cause mortality and CVE in patients with STEMI with or without T2DM. However, the predictive effect was modified by T2DM.

RESUMEN

Since 1993, the annual worldwide cost of diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), control has been routinely quoted to be US$1 billion. This estimate requires updating and incorporation of yield losses to reflect current total costs of the pest to the world economy. We present an analysis that estimates what the present costs are likely to be based on a set of necessary, but reasoned, assumptions. We use an existing climate driven model for diamondback moth distribution and abundance, the Food and Agriculture Organization country Brassica crop production data and various management scenarios to bracket the cost estimates. The "length of the string" is somewhere between US$1.3 billion and US$2.3 billion based on management costs. However, if residual pest damage is included then the cost estimates will be even higher; a conservative estimate of 5% diamondback moth-induced yield loss to all crops adds another US$2.7 billion to the total costs associated with the pest. A conservative estimate of total costs associated with diamondback moth management is thus US$4 billion-US$5 billion. The lower bound represents rational decision making by pest managers based on diamondback moth abundance driven by climate only. The upper estimate is due to the more normal practice of weekly insecticide application to vegetable crops and the assumption that canola (Brassica napus L.) is treated with insecticide at least once during the crop cycle. Readers can decide for themselves what the real cost is likely to be because we provide country data for further interpretation. Our analysis suggests that greater efforts at implementation of even basic integrated pest management would reduce insecticide inputs considerably, reducing negative environmental impacts and saving many hundreds of millions of dollars annually.

RESUMEN

Negative ions Cl(-), Cl(2)(-), CCl(-), CHCl(-), and CCl(2)(-) are observed in vacuum-ultraviolet ion-pair photodissociations of chloroform (CCl(3)H) using the Hefei synchrotron radiation facility, and their ion production efficiency curves are recorded in the photon energy range of 10.00-21.50 eV. Two similar spectra of the isotope anions (35)Cl(-) and (37)Cl(-) indicate the following: Besides the strong bands corresponding to the electron transitions from valence to Rydberg orbitals converging to the ionic states, some additional peaks can be assigned with the energetically accessible multibody fragmentations; a distinct peak at photon energy 14.55 eV may be due to a cascade process (namely, the Cl(2) neutral fragment at the highly excited state D'2(3)Π(g) may be produced in the photodissociation of CCl(3)H, and then the Cl(-) anions are produced in the pulsed-field induced ion-pair dissociations of Cl(2) (D'2(3)Π(g))); two vibrational excitation progressions, nν(2)(+) and nν(2)(+) + ν(3)(+), and nν(4)(+) and nν(4)(+) + ν(2)(+), are observed around C̃ (2)E and D̃ (2)E ionic states, respectively. The enthalpies of the multibody fragmentations to Cl(2)(-), CCl(-), CHCl(-), and CCl(2)(-) are calculated with the thermochemistry data available in the literature, and these multibody ion-pair dissociation pathways are tentatively assigned in the respective anion production spectra.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the use of titanium mesh reconstruction after sternal tumor resection. METHODS: From January 2007 to January 2011, 14 patients with sternal tumors were admitted into Peking Union Medical Hospital. The clinical characteristics, surgical resection, and technique of reconstruction were reviewed. RESULTS: Of the 14 patients, 3 had a metastatic sternal tumor, the primary sites of which were as follows: hepatic carcinoma in one case (metastasis 19 years after operation), breast carcinoma in another case (metastasis 5 years after operation), and renal carcinoma in the other case (found simultaneously). Two patients showed local involvement of the sternum: 1 had thymic carcinoma, and the other had myofibrosarcoma. The remaining 9 patients had primary tumors: 4 were osteochondroma, 3 chondrosarcoma, 1 eosinophilic granuloma, 1 non-Hodgekin's lymphoma. En bloc resection of the sternal tumor was performed in all the 14 patients. The defect was repaired with the titanium mesh adjusted to the shape of the defect and fixed with the stainless steel wire. Eleven patients were followed up for a period from 2 months to 4 years, during which no translocation or broken of the titanium mesh was observed. CONCLUSIONS: Radical en bloc excision remains the treatment of choice for sternal tumors. Sternum defect reconstruction using titanium mesh as a rigid replacement proves appropriate and effective.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To find the optimal proportion of Composite Fructus Psoralea and Fructus Cnidii (CFPC) for inhibiting the bone metastasis of breast cancer by way of exploring its acting mechanism viewing from OPG/RANKL/RANK system. METHODS: The human bone metastasis of breast cancer model was established by injecting tumor cells of MDA-MB-231BO cell line into the left cardiac ventricle of nude mice. The modeled mice were randomly divided into seven groups: the blank group administered with normal saline by gastrogavage, the positive control group with zoledronic acid via peritoneal injection, and the 5 tested group with CFPC in different proportions of Fructus Psoralea and Fructus Cnidii, i.e., (A, 4:0; B, 3:1; C, 1:1; D, 1:3, and E 0:4), given by gastric infusion. The treatment started from 1 week after modeling and lasted for six weeks. By the end of the experiment, the metastatic foci in bone were imaged by radionuclide tracing method and X-ray photograph, and separated for detecting gene and protein expressions of osteoprotegerin (OPG), receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappaB ligand (RANKL), interleukin-8 (IL-8), parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP), macrophage colony stimulating factor (MCSF) by Real-time PCR and Western blot respectively. RESULTS: Inhibition of bone metastasis gene was displayed to some extent in all the tested groups treated with CFPC, showing an increased level of OPG mRNA expression (It was 60.343 +/- 6.274 in the tested group C), and decreased mRNA expressions of IL-8, PTHrP, MCSF, RANKL (218.010 +/- 12.802, 232.399 +/- 14.354, 319.831 +/- 5.322, and 195.701 +/- 4. 862, respectively in the tested group C). The optimal effect was shown in the tested group C, showing significant difference to that in the blank group (P < 0.01). Meanwhile, the OPG in the bone metastatic foci could be up-regulated and protein expressions of RANKL/IL-8/PTHrP/MCSF down-regulated in all the tested groups. The optimal effect was shown in the tested group C, with significant difference from those of the normal saline group. CONCLUSION: CFPC could inhibit the bone metastasis of breast cancer through activating OPG/RANKL/RANK pathway. Among different proportions of Fructus Psoralea and Fructus Cnidii, 1:1 was the best one.

RESUMEN

Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) is an evolving technology used to elucidate the cellular architecture of adult organs. Previous scRNA-seq on breast tissue utilized reduction mammoplasty samples, which are often histologically abnormal. We report a rapid tissue collection/processing protocol to perform scRNA-seq of breast biopsies of healthy women and identify 23 breast epithelial cell clusters. Putative cell-of-origin signatures derived from these clusters are applied to analyze transcriptomes of ~3,000 breast cancers. Gene signatures derived from mature luminal cell clusters are enriched in ~68% of breast cancers, whereas a signature from a luminal progenitor cluster is enriched in ~20% of breast cancers. Overexpression of luminal progenitor cluster-derived signatures in HER2+, but not in other subtypes, is associated with unfavorable outcome. We identify TBX3 and PDK4 as genes co-expressed with estrogen receptor (ER) in the normal breasts, and their expression analyses in >550 breast cancers enable prognostically relevant subclassification of ER+ breast cancers.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Osteoarthritis (OA) pertains to a chronic disease of degenerative joints distinguished by articular cartilage destruction, subchondral bone remodeling, osteophyte formation, and inflammatory changes. Chondrocyte apoptosis is inextricably linked to cartilage degeneration. SRY-related high-mobility-group-box 9 (SOX9) is a well-acknowledged transcription factor in the chondrogenesis. Nevertheless, the detailed function of miR-138-5p/SOX9 in OA remains to be fully clarified. MATERIALS AND METHODS: qRT-PCR was performed to measure the expressions of miR-138-5p and SOX9 mRNA in OA and normal cartilage tissues and cells. Human chondrocyte cell lines, CHON-001 and ATDC5, were treated with different doses of interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß) to simulate the inflammatory response environment of OA. miR-138-5p mimics, miR-138-5p inhibitors, and SOX9 small interfering RNA (siRNA) were constructed and transfected into CHON-001 and ATDC5 cells. CCK-8 was conducted to determine the cell viability and transwell assay was used to monitor the migration of cells. Western blot was carried out to detect the expressions of apoptosis- related factors. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was adopted to measure the contents of inflammatory factors. TargetScan predicted SOX9 was a target gene of miR-138-5p, which was then verified by luciferase assay. RESULTS: miR-138-5p expression was down-regulated in OA and regulated SOX9 expression. The downregulation of miR-138-5p facilitated the proliferation and migration of CHON-001 and ATDC5 cells, while impeded their apoptosis and inflammatory response. Besides, down-regulated SOX9 can counteract the promoting effect of down-regulated miR-138-5p on the proliferation and migration of chondrocytes. CONCLUSION: miR-138-5p can arrest the proliferation and migration of CHON-001 and ATDC5 via restraining SOX9, and facilitate the apoptosis and inflammation. This study revealed the protective effect of down-regulated miR-138-5p on the inflammatory injury of chondrocytes caused by IL-1ß.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Chinese pediatricians are working on the front line to fight COVID-19. They have published a great amount of first-hand clinical data. Collecting their data and forming a large sample for analysis is more conducive to the recognition, prevention and treatment of coronavirus disease 2019 in children. The epidemic prevention and control experience of Chinese pediatricians should be shared with the world. METHODS: By searching Chinese and English literature, the data of 406 children with COVID-19 in China were analyzed. RESULTS: It was found that the clustered incidence of children's families is a dynamic transmission feature; the incidence is low; asymptomatic infections and mild cases account for 44.8%, with only 7 cases of critical illness; laboratory examination of lymphocyte counts is not reduced, as it is for adults; chest CT findings are less severe than those for adults. These presentations are the clinical features of COVID-19 in children. Only 55 of the 406 cases were tested by anal swab for virus nucleic acid, 45 of which were positive, accounting for 81.8% of stool samples. CONCLUSION: There are more children than adults with asymptomatic infections, milder conditions, faster recovery, and a better prognosis. Some concealed morbidity characteristics also bring difficulties to the early identification, prevention and control of COVID-19. COVID-19 screening is needed in the pediatric fever clinic, and respiratory and digestive tract nucleic acid tests should be performed. Efforts should be made to prevent children from becoming a hidden source of transmission in kindergartens, schools or families. Furthermore, China's experience in treating COVID-19 in children has led to faster recovery of sick children.

RESUMEN

The small-sized Co(n)O (n = 1-5) clusters with different spin states have been systematically investigated by using the density-functional approach. The total energies, equilibrium geometries, and magnetic properties are discussed. Equilibrium geometries and the relative stabilities in terms of the calculated fragmentation energies are discussed, manifesting that the remarkable stable small-sized cluster corresponds to the Co(2)O isomer, and that the O atom prefers the surface-capped pattern on Co(n) (n > 2) clusters and bonds with three Co atoms simultaneously. Furthermore, the calculated averaged atomic magnetic moments of Co(n)O (n = 1-5) clusters exhibit that the septet Co(2)O structure has the biggest averaged atomic magnetic moment of 2.0 mu(B)/atom, it is interesting that the oxygen capped Co(n) (n = 1-5) clusters retain the magnetic properties of bare transition metal (TM) Co(n) clusters. In addition, the distribution of electron density of the HOMO states for the most stable Co(n)O clusters mainly localizes around Co(n) atoms while the distribution around O atom is very low, and their shapes of the HOMO and bonding properties between bare Co(n) clusters and Co(n)O clusters are obviously different. The calculated electron affinities and experimental results (J. Phys. Chem. A 2002, 106, 4891) show that the incoming oxygen atom causes a minor influence on the electronic properties of Co(n) clusters. Comparisons of the calculated ionization potentials (IPs) for CoO and Co(2)O clusters with available experimental measurements are made.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Previous observations suggested that asiaticoside had a possible antiscaring effect. However, the precise pathological mechanism still remain unknown. We questioned whether asiaticoside might alleviate the formation of hypertrophic scar by affecting the expression of Transform growth factor beta (TGF-beta)/Smad signaling. AIMS: To investigate the effect of asiaticoside on the expression of TGF-beta/Smad signaling in the rabbit ear model of hypertrophic scar and to clarify the mechanism of asiaticoside on the scar treatment. METHODS: The rabbit model with hypertrophic scar was created and applied topically with a low-dose (0.5%) or high-dose (1%) asiaticoside three times daily for 1, 2 or 3 months and then we examined the changes of macroscopic and histopathologic characteristics of scars, and the expression of TGF-beta(1) and Smad protein was studied by applying reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and western blotting. RESULT: Asiaticoside could remarkably alleviate the scar in the rabbit ear model. Western blotting showed that the asiaticoside could decrease TGF-beta(1) expression, and further study revealed that asiaticoside could remarkably enhance the expression of inhibitory Smad7, but it had no effect on the expression of Smad2. CONCLUSION: Asiaticoside suggested a possible antiscaring effect probably by enhancing the expression of inhibitive Smad7.

RESUMEN

A density functional study of the RhCn(n = 1-6) clusters with different spin states has been carried out systematically by using the B3LYP/Lan2DZ method. The equilibrium geometries associated with total energies and natural populations of RhCn (n = 1-6) clusters are calculated and presented. Stabilities and electronic properties are discussed in detail. The relative stabilities in term of the calculated fragmentation energies show that the lowest-energy RhCn clusters with rhodium atom being located at terminal of carbon chain are the linear geometries and the ground states of the RhCn clusters alternate between doublet (for n-odd members) and quartet (for n-even members) states. Furthermore, the calculated fragmentation energies of the RhCn show strong even-odd alternations: the RhCn clusters with an odd number of carbon atoms are more stable than those with an even number ones. In addition, we comment on the charge transfer and chemical bonding properties within the clusters.
