OBJECTIVES: Aimed to test an association model for Successful Aging (SA), with mindfulness and self-compassion factors as predictor variables, and components of subjective well-being (SWB) as mediating variables in older adults. METHOD: This cross-sectional, descriptive study was conducted using the Google Forms platform and printed questionnaires, applied in an interview format with older adult participants from the Brazilian states of Bahia and Sergipe. A total of 233 older adults participated, residing in the states of Bahia (34.8%) and Sergipe (65.2%), with a mean age of 69.2 years (SD = 7.33). RESULTS: The multiple linear regression (MLR) results indicated that SA was associated with mindfulness, the positive factor of self-compassion, and positive affect (PA). Subsequently, structural equation modeling (SEM) suggested that both mindfulness and self-compassion, which positively correlated with each other, were significantly and positively associated with PA, while PA was positively and significantly associated with SA. CONCLUSION: Mindfulness and the positive facet of self-compassion, mediated by PA, were indirectly associated with SA, while PA was significantly and more strongly associated with SA. Finally, mindfulness and the positive facet of self-compassion were positively correlated with each other.

We investigated the association of movement behavior patterns with cardiometabolic health, body composition, and functional fitness in older adults. A total of 242 older adults participated of this cross-sectional study. Sedentary time, light physical activity (LPA) and moderate-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), steps/day, and step cadence were assessed by accelerometry. The movement behavior patterns were derived by principal component analysis. Cardiometabolic health was defined by a metabolic syndrome score (cMetS). Body composition was determined by appendicular lean mass/body mass index (ALM/BMI). Functional fitness was assessed by a composite z-score from the Senior Fitness Test battery. Two patterns were identified: 'Tortoise' (low sedentary time, high LPA and steps/day) and 'Hare' (high MVPA, steps/day, and step cadence). 'Tortoise' and 'Hare' were associated with better cMetS. 'Hare' was positively associated with ALM/BMI and Functional Fitness. While 'Tortoise' and 'Hare' were associated with better cMetS, only 'Hare' was associated with better ALM/BMI and functional fitness.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of sodium (Na) levels in the drinking water on the performance, carcass yield, and meat quality of slow-growing chickens. A completely randomized design with 4 treatments (4.90; 32.30; 60.53; and 101.0 mg/L of Na in water) and 6 replications, with 20 birds per experimental unit, was adopted. The treatments are evaluated in the following: 10 to 25, 10 to 39, and 10 to 54 days. For slow-growing chickens from 10 to 25 days, the Na levels in the drinking water promoted a quadratic effect for water and feed intake (p<0.05). The inclusion of Na in the drinking water offered to slow-growing chickens from 10 to 39 days resulted in a reduction in voluntary water intake (p<0.05). For slow-growing chickens from 10 to 54 days, the Na levels in the drinking water promoted a quadratic effect for water intake and feed conversion (p<0.05). After 54 days, the slow-growing chickens were slaughtered and it was observed that the Na inclusion in the drinking water offered to slow-growing chickens provided a quadratic effect for cold carcass, breast, and kidney weights and for kidney and liver yields (p<0.05). Liver weight was reduced with increasing Na levels in the drinking water (p<0.05). For the breast cut, the Na levels in the drinking water promoted a quadratic effect for pH24h, drip loss, cooking loss, protein, and fat and an increase in shear force (p<0.05). For the thigh cut, the Na levels in the drinking water increased the pH24h and reduced drip loss and shear force (p<0.05), and a quadratic effect was observed for moisture and fat (p<0.05). Levels of up to 60.53 mg/L of Na promote an increase in feed intake, which provided a higher breast weight and protein content with reduced fat and drip loss.

Fire is one of the most powerful modifiers of the Amazonian landscape and knowledge about its drivers is needed for planning control and suppression. A plethora of factors may play a role in the annual dynamics of fire frequency, spanning the biophysical, climatic, socioeconomic and institutional dimensions. To uncover the main forces currently at play, we investigated the area burned in both forested and deforested areas in the outstanding case of Brazil's state of Acre, in southwestern Amazonia. We mapped burn scars in already-deforested areas and intact forest based on satellite images from the Landsat series analyzed between 2016 and 2019. The mapped burnings in already-deforested areas totalled 550,251 ha. In addition, we mapped three forest fires totaling 34,084 ha. Fire and deforestation were highly correlated, and the latter occurred mainly in federal government lands, with protected areas showing unprecedented forest fire levels in 2019. These results indicate that Acre state is under increased fire risk even during average rainfall years. The record fires of 2019 may continue if Brazil's ongoing softening of environmental regulations and enforcement is maintained. Acre and other Amazonian states must act quickly to avoid an upsurge of social and economic losses in the coming years.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of three varieties of cactus cladodes resistant to carmine cochineal on the animal performance and histology of the large intestine of sheep. Forty lambs (21.0 ± 2.0 kg body weight) were distributed in a completely randomized design, with four treatments and ten repetitions. The experimental treatments consisted of a control diet and three more diets in which part (750 g/kg) of the elephant grass hay, and all the corn were replaced by Miúda cactus cladodes, IPA-Sertânia cactus cladodes, or Orelha de Elefante Mexicana (O.E.M.) cactus cladodes. On the 60th day after the introduction of the tested diets, blood samples were collected to quantify serum magnesium (Mg2+) levels. After 63 days of experiment, the animals were slaughtered and fragments of the cecum and colon were collected for histopathological analysis. The inclusion of the Miúda and O.E.M. cactus cladodes in the diet caused inflammatory lesions in the cecum (100% of the animals) and in the colon (71.43% of the animals) of the sheep. The inflammation in the cecum caused by Miúda and O.E.M. cactus cladodes was considered accentuated (P = 0.009). Less voluntary water intake was observed for animals submitted to diets with cactus cladodes (P < 0.001), as well as higher water content in the feces (P < 0.001). The cactus cladodes, especially the Miúda and O.E.M. varieties, cause lesions in the tissue morphology of the cecum and colon of sheep, but improve productive performance.

Although sandy coastal plains are important buffer zones to protect the coast line and maintain biological diversity and ecosystem services, these ecosystems have been endangered by anthropogenic activities. Thus, information on coastal biodiversity and forces shaping coastal biological diversity are extremely important for effective conservation strategies. In this study, we aimed to compare arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungal communities from soil samples collected on the mainland and nearby islands located in Brazilian sandy coastal plain ecosystems (Restingas) to get information about AM fungal biogeography and identify factors shaping these communities. Soil samples were collected in 2013 and 2014 on the beachfront of the tropical sandy coastal plain at six sites (three island and three mainland locations) across the northeast, southeast, and south regions of Brazil. Overall, we recorded 53 AM fungal species from field and trap culture samples. The richness and diversity of AM fungal species did not differ between mainland and island locations, but AM fungal community assemblages were different between mainland and island environments and among most sites sampled. Glomeromycota communities registered from island samples showed higher heterogeneity than communities from mainland samples. Sandy coastal plains harbor diverse AM fungal communities structured by climatic, edaphic, and spatial factors, while the distance from the colonizing source (mainland environments) does not strongly affect the AM fungal communities in Brazilian coastal environments.

With the widespread use of electric machines, there is a growing need to extract information from the machines to improve their control systems and maintenance management. The present work shows the development of an embedded system to perform the monitoring of the rotor physical variables of a squirrel cage induction motor. The system is comprised of: a circuit to acquire desirable rotor variable(s) and value(s) that send it to the computer; a rectifier and power storage circuit that converts an alternating current in a continuous current but also stores energy for a certain amount of time to wait for the motor's shutdown; and a magnetic generator that harvests energy from the rotating field to power the circuits mentioned above. The embedded system is set on the rotor of a 5 HP squirrel cage induction motor, making it difficult to power the system because it is rotating. This problem can be solved with the construction of a magnetic generator device to avoid the need of using batteries or collector rings and will send data to the computer using a wireless NRF24L01 module. For the proposed system, initial validation tests were made using a temperature sensor (DS18b20), as this variable is known as the most important when identifying the need for maintenance and control systems. Few tests have shown promising results that, with further improvements, can prove the feasibility of using sensors in the rotor.

BACKGROUND: Phase angle (PhA) is a prognostic marker of all-cause mortality in chronic kidney disease. However, no study has investigated this marker as a predictor of exercise intolerance in hemodialysis (HD) patients. The aim of this study was to determine a cut-off point for the PhA capable of discriminating HD patients with reduced exercise tolerance. METHODS: Thirty-one patients (80.6% men, median age 69 years) were included. The evaluations were performed on three different days, before the HD session. The outcomes evaluated were: biochemical markers, inflammatory and nutritional status, body composition, peripheral muscle strength and exercise tolerance. Performance ≤50% of the predicted value in the six-minute step test (6MST) was defined as reduced exercise tolerance. RESULTS: Patients presented an average of 67.6 steps (50.5% of predicted) in the 6MST. Fifteen patients (48.4%) were classified with reduced exercise tolerance. The receiver operating characteristic curve indicated a cut-off point of 3.73° for the PhA (sensitivity = 87%, specificity = 81%, and area under the curve = 0.88 [95% CI: 0.76-1.00]; p < 0.001). Patients with reduced exercise tolerance had worse inflammatory and nutritional status, lower PhA and greater impairment of peripheral muscle strength. CONCLUSION: The cut-off point of 3.73° for the PhA is sensitive and specific to discriminate HD patients with reduced exercise tolerance. TRIAL REGISTRATION: This study was registered in the Clinical Trials database (no. NCT03779126, date of first registration 19/12/2018).

Bacterial cellulose (BC), produced by bacterial fermentation, is a high-purity material. BC can be oxidized (BCOXI), providing aldehyde groups for covalent bonds with drugs. Frutalin (FTL) is a lectin capable of modulating cell proliferation and remodeling, which accelerates wound healing. This study aimed to develop an FTL-incorporated dressing based on BC, and to evaluate its physicochemical properties and biological activity in vitro. An experimental design was employed to maximize FTL loading yield onto the BC and BCOXI, where independent variables were FTL concentration, temperature and immobilization time. BCOXI-FTL 1 (44.96 % ± 1.34) had the highest incorporation yield (IY) at the experimental conditions: 6 h, 5 °C, 20 µg mL-1. The second highest yield was BCOXI-FTL 6 (23.28 % ± 1.43) using 24 h, 5 °C, 100 µg mL-1. Similarly, the same reaction parameters provided higher immobilization yields for native bacterial cellulose: BC-FTL 6 (16.91 % ± 1.05) and BC-FTL 1 (21.71 % ± 1.57). Purified FTL displayed no cytotoxicity to fibroblast cells (<50 µg mL-1 concentration) during 24 h. Furthermore, BCOXI-FTL and BC-FTL were non-cytotoxic during 24 h and stimulated fibroblast migration. BCOXI-FTL demonstrated neutrophil activation in vitro similar to FTL. These promising results indicate that the bacterial cellulose matrices containing FTL at low concentrations, could be used as an innovative biomaterial for developing wound dressings.

Deep skin burn represents a global morbidity and mortality problem, and the limitation of topical treatment agents has motivated research to development new formulations capable of preventing infections and accelerating healing. The aim of this work was to develop and characterize an emulgel based on collagen (COL) and gelatin (GEL) extracted from fish skin associated with Chlorella vulgaris extract (CE) and silver nitrate (AgNO3). COL and GEL were characterized by physicochemical and thermal analyses; and CE by electrophoresis and its antioxidant capacity. Three emulgels formulations were developed: COL (0.5%) + GEL (2.5%) (E1), COL+GEL+CE (1%) (E2), and COL+GEL+CE + AgNO3 (0.1%) (E3). All formulations were characterized by physicochemical, rheology assays, and preclinical analyses: cytotoxicity (in vitro) and healing potential using a burn model in rats. COL and GEL showed typical physicochemical characteristics, and CE presented 1.3 mg/mL of proteins and antioxidant activity of 76%. Emulgels presented a coherent physicochemical profile and pseudoplastic behavior. Preclinical analysis showed concentration-dependent cytotoxicity against fibroblast and keratinocytes. In addition, all emulgels induced similar percentages of wound contraction and complete wound closure in 28 days. The histopathological analysis showed higher scores for polymorphonuclear cells to E1 and greater neovascularization and re-epithelialization to E3. Then, E3 formulation has potential to improve burn healing, although its use in a clinical setting requires further studies.

This study investigated the morphology of Rhinella crucifer cutaneous glands, as well as the protein/peptide profiles and bioactivities of body gland secretions (BGS) and parotoid macrogland secretions (PS). The parotoid as well as dorsal and ventral skin fragments of male and female individuals were processed for histological analysis. The protein and peptide profiles of male and female gland secretions were evaluated. Male secretions were also assessed for proteolytic, trypsin inhibiting, hemagglutinating, hemolytic, antimicrobial, and anticoagulant activities. The R. crucifer skin structure presented protuberances that are clearly visible and formed by the integument, which has cutaneous glands throughout the body. An average of 438 and 333 glands were identified in males in females, respectively. No significant differences were observed in the distribution of glands across the body as well as for area and perimeter of glands. Differences were observed in protein composition between the PS and BGS from males and females, and secretions from animals collected from undisturbed and anthropogenically disturbed areas. Proteins with similarities to catalase and elongation factor 1-alpha were detected in the PS. Zymography revealed proteolytic activity in both male BGS and PS. Male BGS showed antibacterial activity against Enterococcus faecalis and Escherichia coli and anticoagulant activity, being able to prolong prothrombin time by 6.34-fold and activated partial thromboplastin time by 2.17-fold. Finally, male PS and BGS caused a maximum hemolysis degree of 1.4%. The data showed that the cutaneous secretions of R. crucifer are potentially promising for biotechnological prospecting.

Long COVID has been linked to a decline in physical activity and functional capacity. However, it remains unclear which physical symptoms are associated with specific aspects of movement behaviors and functional capacity. We aimed to investigate the associations of fatigue, dyspnea, post-exertional malaise, myalgia, and the co-occurrence of symptoms with movement behaviors and functional capacity in individuals with Long COVID. A cross-sectional multicenter study was conducted. Questionnaires were used to assess fatigue, dyspnea, post-exertional malaise, and myalgia. Accelerometry was employed to assess sedentary time, steps per day, light physical activity, and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. The six-minute walk test, 30-s chair stand test, and timed up and go were used to assess functional capacity. One hundred and two community-dwelling individuals who had been living with Long COVID for 15 ± 10 months participated in the study. Fatigue, post-exertional malaise, and the co-occurrence of physical symptoms showed a negative association with step count, while post-exertional malaise was also negatively associated with moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. Dyspnea showed a negative association with the functional score, including all tests. Our findings suggest that fatigue, post-exertional malaise, and the co-occurrence of physical symptoms are negatively associated with physical activity, while dyspnea is negatively associated with functional capacity in individuals with Long COVID.

BACKGROUND: Paspalum (Poaceae) is an important genus of the tribe Paniceae, which includes several species of economic importance for foraging, turf and ornamental purposes, and has a complex taxonomical classification. Because of the widespread interest in several species of this genus, many accessions have been conserved in germplasm banks and distributed throughout various countries around the world, mainly for the purposes of cultivar development and cytogenetic studies. Correct identification of germplasms and quantification of their variability are necessary for the proper development of conservation and breeding programs. Evaluation of microsatellite markers in different species of Paspalum conserved in a germplasm bank allowed assessment of the genetic differences among them and assisted in their proper botanical classification. RESULTS: Seventeen new polymorphic microsatellites were developed for Paspalum atratum Swallen and Paspalum notatum Flüggé, twelve of which were transferred to 35 Paspalum species and used to evaluate their variability. Variable degrees of polymorphism were observed within the species. Based on distance-based methods and a Bayesian clustering approach, the accessions were divided into three main species groups, two of which corresponded to the previously described Plicatula and Notata Paspalum groups. In more accurate analyses of P. notatum accessions, the genetic variation that was evaluated used thirty simple sequence repeat (SSR) loci and revealed seven distinct genetic groups and a correspondence of these groups to the three botanical varieties of the species (P. notatum var. notatum, P. notatum var. saurae and P. notatum var. latiflorum). CONCLUSIONS: The molecular genetic approach employed in this study was able to distinguish many of the different taxa examined, except for species that belong to the Plicatula group, which has historically been recognized as a highly complex group. Our molecular genetic approach represents a valuable tool for species identification in the initial assessment of germplasm as well as for characterization, conservation and successful species hybridization.

A 21-yr-old female jaguar (Panthera onca) died in a zoo in Teresina, Piaui, Brazil, following a history of abdominal distension, ascites, anorexia, and dyspnea. At necropsy, a dark red, watery, blood-tinged serous fluid was present in the abdominal cavity. The peritoneum was thick with firm, yellow, villous projections. Histologically, the tumors were composed of a biphasic population of cells, which reacted to anti-cytokeratin and anti-vimentin antibodies, consistent with a biphasic benign mesothelioma of peritoneal origin. This is the first reported case of mesothelioma in a captive jaguar.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the in vivo efficiency of commercial polymeric membranes for guided bone regeneration. METHODS: Rat calvarial critical size defects was treated with LuminaCoat (LC), Surgitime PTFE (SP), GenDerm (GD), Pratix (PR), Techgraft (TG) or control (C-) and histomorphometric analysis determined the percentage of new bone, connective tissue and biomaterial at 1 or 3 months. Statistical analysis used ANOVA with Tukey's post-test for means at same experimental time and the paired Student's t test between the two periods, considering p < 0.05. RESULTS: New bone at 1 month was higher for SP, TG and C-, at 3 months there were no differences, and between 1 and 3 months PR had greater increase growthing. Connective tissue at 1 month was higher for C-, at 3 months for PR, TG and C-, and between 1 and 3 months C- had sharp decline. Biomaterial at 1 month was higher for LC, in 3 months for SP and TG, and between 1 and 3 months, LC, GD and TG had more decreasing mean. CONCLUSIONS: SP had greater osteopromotive capacity and limitation of connective ingrowth, but did not exhibit degradation. PR and TG had favorable osteopromotion, LC less connective tissue and GD more accelerated biodegradation.

The diverse clinical outcomes of prostate cancer have led to the development of gene signature assays predicting disease progression. Improved prostate cancer progression biomarkers are needed as current RNA biomarker tests have varying success for intermediate prostate cancer. Interest grows in universal gene signatures for invasive carcinoma progression. Early breast and prostate cancers share characteristics, including hormone dependence and BRCA1/2 mutations. Given the similarities in the pathobiology of breast and prostate cancer, we utilized the NanoString BC360 panel, comprising the validated PAM50 classifier and pathway-specific signatures associated with general tumor progression as well as breast cancer-specific classifiers. This retrospective cohort of primary prostate cancers (n=53) was stratified according to biochemical recurrence (BCR) status and the CAPRA-S to identify genes related to high-risk disease. Two public cohort (TCGA-PRAD and GSE54460) were used to validate the results. Expression profiling of our cohort uncovered associations between PIP and INHBA with BCR and high CAPRA-S score, as well as associations between VCAN, SFRP2, and THBS4 and BCR. Despite low levels of the ESR1 gene compared to AR, we found strong expression of the ER signaling signature, suggesting that BCR may be driven by ER-mediated pathways. Kaplan-Meier and univariate Cox proportional hazards regression analysis indicated the expression of ESR1, PGR, VCAN, and SFRP2 could predict the occurrence of relapse events. This is in keeping with the pathways represented by these genes which contribute to angiogenesis and the epithelial-mesenchymal transition. It is likely that VCAN works by activating the stroma and remodeling the tumor microenvironment. Additionally, SFRP2 overexpression has been associated with increased tumor size and reduced survival rates in breast cancer and among prostate cancer patients who experienced BCR. ESR1 influences disease progression by activating stroma, stimulating stem/progenitor prostate cancer, and inducing TGF-ß. Estrogen signaling may therefore serve as a surrogate to AR signaling during progression and in hormone-refractory disease, particularly in prostate cancer patients with stromal-rich tumors. Collectively, the use of agnostic biomarkers developed for breast cancer stratification has facilitated a precise clinical classification of patients undergoing radical prostatectomy and highlighted the therapeutic potential of targeting estrogen signaling in prostate cancer.

OBJECTIVE: To map out the studies that have investigated the associations of polypharmacy and/or potentially inappropriate medication (PIM) use with physical activity and sedentary time in older adults. METHODS: We conducted a literature search from inception to December 2022 in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Scopus. INCLUSION CRITERIA: observational studies including older adults (≥60 years); English, Portuguese, and Spanish languages; any definition of polypharmacy; implicit and explicit criteria of PIM use; physical activity and/or sedentary time data. RESULTS: Fourteen cross-sectional studies were included; 11 defined polypharmacy as ≥5 medications (prevalence ranging from 9.5 % to 57 %). No study reported information on PIM use. Most studies included participants aged <80 years. Twelve studies included self-reported measures of physical activity, while two studies used accelerometer-measured physical activity. Ten studies included analyses adjusted for confounders, and nine considered polypharmacy as an outcome. All of them demonstrated an inverse association between physical activity and polypharmacy, irrespective of the definition of polypharmacy and the assessment method employed (self-reported or accelerometry). One study reported an inverse association between polypharmacy (as the exposure) and physical activity (as the outcome). None of the studies investigated the association between sedentary time and polypharmacy. CONCLUSIONS: Limited evidence suggests an inverse association between physical activity and polypharmacy in older adults. However, the relationship between PIM use, physical activity, and sedentary time remains unknown. Longitudinal studies utilizing objectively-measured physical activity and sedentary time are needed to better clarify the relationship between these movement behaviors and polypharmacy and/or PIM use in older adults.

RESUMEN

A three-port optical circulator of W-format based on 2D photonic crystal is presented. This circulator is more compact as compared to the known one of the traditional Y-format. The W-circulator does not have rotational symmetry. As a consequence, the frequency responses for different port excitation are slightly different, as it is shown by symmetry analysis and by numerical simulations.

RESUMEN

Symmetries express the invariance of a system towards sets of mathematical transformations. In more practical terms, symmetries greatly reduce or simplify the computational efforts required to evaluate relevant properties of a system. In this paper, two methods are proposed to implement spin symmetries which simplify the analysis of the spreading of diseases in an agent-based epidemic model. We perform a set of simulations to measure the efficiency gains compared to traditional methods. Our findings show symmetry-based algorithms improve the performance of the Monte Carlo simulation and the exact Markov process.

BACKGROUND: Conditions along the brain-gut-microbiota (BGM) axis can significantly contribute to the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Evidence from animal studies indicates a role of probiotics in regulating mood, cognition, and stress response via the BGM axis. However, the effect of probiotics on AD needs to be better clarified in preclinical and clinical studies. METHODS: We prepared this systematic review according to PRISMA. PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Virtual Health Library (VHL) were searched for original articles concerning the effects of probiotics in experimental AD. RESULTS: Results were presented as a narrative synthesis according to the Synthesis Without Metaanalysis (SWiM) Guideline. Seventeen studies met the inclusion criteria. The results showed significant effects in the experimental models of AD treated with probiotics alone or in mixture due to expressive improvements in cognitive tests. CONCLUSION: Furthermore, in most of the included studies, it was possible to observe a reduction in inflammatory processes, an increase in the concentration of peptide hormones, insulin homeostasis in the brain, increased antioxidant enzymes, and a decrease in beta-amyloid deposition and tau hyperphosphorylation. Supplementation of probiotics seems to improve performance in cognitive tests and increase the concentration of substances capable of delaying the neurodegenerative process of AD in experimental models.
