RESUMEN

This work presents the improvements in the design and testing of polarimeters based on channel-cut crystals for nuclear resonant scattering experiments at the 14.4 keV resonance of 57Fe. By using four asymmetric reflections at asymmetry angles of α1 = -28°, α2 = 28°, α3 = -28° and α4 = 28°, the degree of polarization purity could be improved to 2.2 × 10-9. For users, an advanced polarimeter without beam offset is now available at beamline P01 of the storage ring PETRA III.

RESUMEN

For more than 40 years, most astrophysical observations and laboratory studies of two key soft x-ray diagnostic 2p-3d transitions, 3C and 3D, in Fe XVII ions found oscillator strength ratios f(3C)/f(3D) disagreeing with theory, but uncertainties had precluded definitive statements on this much studied conundrum. Here, we resonantly excite these lines using synchrotron radiation at PETRA III, and reach, at a millionfold lower photon intensities, a 10 times higher spectral resolution, and 3 times smaller uncertainty than earlier work. Our final result of f(3C)/f(3D)=3.09(8)(6) supports many of the earlier clean astrophysical and laboratory observations, while departing by five sigmas from our own newest large-scale ab initio calculations, and excluding all proposed explanations, including those invoking nonlinear effects and population transfers.

RESUMEN

The laser-induced fragmentation dynamics of this most fundamental polar molecule HeH^{+} are measured using an ion beam of helium hydride and an isotopologue at various wavelengths and intensities. In contrast to the prevailing interpretation of strong-field fragmentation, in which stretching of the molecule results primarily from laser-induced electronic excitation, experiment and theory for nonionizing dissociation, single ionization, and double ionization both show that the direct vibrational excitation plays the decisive role here. We are able to reconstruct fragmentation pathways and determine the times at which each ionization step occurs as well as the bond length evolution before the electron removal. The dynamics of this extremely asymmetric molecule contrast the well-known symmetric systems leading to a more general picture of strong-field molecular dynamics and facilitating interpolation to systems between the two extreme cases.

RESUMEN

The spectrum of the undulator radiation of beamline P01 at Petra III has been measured after passing a multiple reflection channel-cut polarimeter. Odd and even harmonics up to the 15th order, as well as Compton peaks which were produced by the high harmonics in the spectrum, could been measured. These additional contributions can have a tremendous influence on the performance of the polarimeter and have to be taken into account for further polarimeter designs.

RESUMEN

We present the concluding result from an Ives-Stilwell-type time dilation experiment using 7Li+ ions confined at a velocity of ß=v/c=0.338 in the storage ring ESR at Darmstadt. A Λ-type three-level system within the hyperfine structure of the 7Li+3S1 →3P2 line is driven by two laser beams aligned parallel and antiparallel relative to the ion beam. The lasers' Doppler shifted frequencies required for resonance are measured with an accuracy of <4×10(-9) using optical-optical double resonance spectroscopy. This allows us to verify the special relativity relation between the time dilation factor γ and the velocity ß, γ√1-ß2=1 to within ±2.3×10(-9) at this velocity. The result, which is singled out by a high boost velocity ß, is also interpreted within Lorentz invariance violating test theories.

RESUMEN

We have developed and operated an electronic detection system for the non-destructive single-pass detection of bunches of charged particles in a beamline that allows for a measurement of their lateral position with respect to the central beamline axis on a shot-to-shot basis. It provides all features of our related development reported in Kiffer et al. (Rev Sci Instrum 90:113301, 2019), namely single-pass measurement of bunch length, kinetic energy and absolute charge, and is additionally designed to provide the lateral position of bunches with sub-mm accuracy. We show the setup, associated methods and provide characterizing measurements with bunches of highly charged ions in the keV regime of kinetic energy that demonstrate the capabilities and show a typical application.

RESUMEN

We have devised an experimental method and apparatus for the simultaneous nondestructive determination of the absolute ion number, ion kinetic energy, and length of bunches of charged particles. We have built and operated a corresponding electronic detector that is based on induced charges and their subsequent low-noise amplification at cryogenic temperatures. We have performed measurements with bunches of low-energy highly charged ions from an electron-beam ion source that show the capability of the methods and their implementation. We discuss requirements for, and applications of, such detectors with a particular view on the obtainable information and their sensitivity.

RESUMEN

Electrons bound in highly charged heavy ions such as hydrogen-like bismuth 209Bi82+ experience electromagnetic fields that are a million times stronger than in light atoms. Measuring the wavelength of light emitted and absorbed by these ions is therefore a sensitive testing ground for quantum electrodynamical (QED) effects and especially the electron-nucleus interaction under such extreme conditions. However, insufficient knowledge of the nuclear structure has prevented a rigorous test of strong-field QED. Here we present a measurement of the so-called specific difference between the hyperfine splittings in hydrogen-like and lithium-like bismuth 209Bi82+,80+ with a precision that is improved by more than an order of magnitude. Even though this quantity is believed to be largely insensitive to nuclear structure and therefore the most decisive test of QED in the strong magnetic field regime, we find a 7-σ discrepancy compared with the theoretical prediction.

RESUMEN

The Breit interaction typically appears as a-more or less small-correction to the Coulomb repulsion acting among the electrons. We here propose two x-ray measurements on the angular distribution and linear polarization of the 1s2s(2)2p(1/2) J=1-->1s(2)2s(2) J=0 electric-dipole radiation of high-Z, beryllium-like ions, following the resonant electron capture into initially lithium-like ions, for which the Breit interaction strongly dominates the Coulomb repulsion and leads to a qualitative change in the expected x-ray emission pattern. The proposed measurements are feasible with present-day x-ray detectors and may serve a stringent test on relativistic corrections to the electron-electron interaction in the presence of strong fields.

RESUMEN

It is proposed to apply the radiative electron capture into high-Z projectiles as a probe process for measuring the spin polarization of the hydrogenlike ions at storage rings. We argue that such polarization measurements are possible since the linear polarization of emitted x-ray photons is greatly sensitive to the spin states of incoming ions with nuclear spin I > 1/2. In particular, for K-shell electron capture into the hydrogenlike ions, the linear polarization of light as measured out of the reaction plane is found to be proportional to the degree of ion polarization. Detailed computations for the dependence of the photon polarization on the ion spin states and projectile energies are carried out for the electron recombination into hydrogenlike Bi 82+ ions.
