RESUMEN

Photo(electro)catalysis with semiconducting nanoparticles (NPs) is an attractive approach to convert abundant but intermittent renewable electricity into stable chemical fuels. However, our understanding of the microscopic processes governing the performance of the materials has been hampered by the lack of operando characterization techniques with sufficient lateral resolution. Here, we demonstrate that the local surface potentials of NPs of bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) and their response to illumination differ between adjacent facets and depend strongly on the pH of the ambient electrolyte. The isoelectric points of the dominant {010} basal plane and the adjacent {110} side facets differ by 1.5 pH units. Upon illumination, both facets accumulate positive charges and display a maximum surface photoresponse of +55 mV, much stronger than reported in the literature for the surface photo voltage of BiVO4 NPs in air. High resolution images reveal the presence of numerous surface defects ranging from vacancies of a few atoms, to single unit cell steps, to microfacets of variable orientation and degree of disorder. These defects typically carry a highly localized negative surface charge density and display an opposite photoresponse compared to the adjacent facets. Strategies to model and optimize the performance of photocatalyst NPs, therefore, require an understanding of the distribution of surface defects, including the interaction with ambient electrolyte.

RESUMEN

Solar-driven photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting has attracted a great deal of attention recently. Silicon (Si) is an ideal light absorber for solar energy conversion. However, the poor stability and inefficient surface catalysis of Si photocathodes for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) have remained key challenges. Alternatively, MoS2 has been reported to exhibit excellent catalysis performance if sufficient active sites for the HER are available. Here, ultrathin MoS2 nanoflakes are directly synthesized to coat arrays of Ag-core Si-shell nanospheres (Ag@Si NSs) by using chemical vapor deposition. Due to the high surface area ratio and large curvature of these NSs, the as-grown MoS2 nanoflakes can accommodate more active sites. In addition, the high-quality coating of MoS2 nanoflakes on the Ag@Si NSs protects the photocathode from damage during the PEC reaction. An photocurrent density of 33.3 mA cm-2 at a voltage of -0.4 V is obtained versus the reversible hydrogen electrode. The as-prepared nanostructure as a hydrogen photocathode is evidenced to have high stability over 12 h PEC performance. This work opens up opportunities for composite photocathodes with high activity and stability using cheap and stable co-catalysts.

RESUMEN

The ordering degree of nanostructures is the key to determining the uniformity of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). However, fabrication of large-area ordered nanostructures remains a challenge, especially with the ultrahigh-density (>1010 cm-2). Here, we report a fabrication of large-area ultrahigh-density ordered Ag@Al2O3/Ag core-shell nanosphere (NS) arrays with tunable nanostructures. The ultrahigh-density (2.8 × 1010 cm-2) ordered NS arrays over a large-area capability (diameter >4.0 cm) enable the uniform SERS signals with the relative standard deviation of less than 5%. The as-fabricated highly reproducible SERS substrate can be applied to detect trace phenolic pollutants in water. This work does not only provide a new route for synthesizing the ultrahigh-density ordered nanostructures, but also create a new class of SERS substrates with high sensitivity and excellent reproducibility.

RESUMEN

2D materials are intriguing due to their remarkably thin and flat structure. This unique configuration allows the majority of their constituent atoms to be accessible on the surface, facilitating easier electron tunneling while generating weak surface forces. To decipher the subtle signals inherent in these materials, the application of techniques that offer atomic resolution (horizontal) and sub-Angstrom (z-height vertical) sensitivity is crucial. Scanning probe microscopy (SPM) emerges as the quintessential tool in this regard, owing to its atomic-level spatial precision, ability to detect unitary charges, responsiveness to pico-newton-scale forces, and capability to discern pico-ampere currents. Furthermore, the versatility of SPM to operate under varying environmental conditions, such as different temperatures and in the presence of various gases or liquids, opens up the possibility of studying the stability and reactivity of 2D materials in situ. The characteristic flatness, surface accessibility, ultra-thinness, and weak signal strengths of 2D materials align perfectly with the capabilities of SPM technologies, enabling researchers to uncover the nuanced behaviors and properties of these advanced materials at the nanoscale and even the atomic scale.

RESUMEN

In the process of growth and development in life, gene expressions that control quantitative traits will turn on or off with time. Studies of longitudinal traits are of great significance in revealing the genetic mechanism of biological development. With the development of ultra-high-density sequencing technology, the associated analysis has tremendous challenges to statistical methods. In this paper, a longitudinal functional data association test (LFDAT) method is proposed based on the function-on-function regression model. LFDAT can simultaneously treat phenotypic traits and marker information as continuum variables and analyze the association of longitudinal quantitative traits and gene regions. Simulation studies showed that: 1) LFDAT performs well for both linkage equilibrium simulation and linkage disequilibrium simulation, 2) LFDAT has better performance for gene regions (include common variants, low-frequency variants, rare variants and mixture), and 3) LFDAT can accurately identify gene switching in the growth and development stage. The longitudinal data of the Oryza sativa projected shoot area is analyzed by LFDAT. It showed that there is the advantage of quick calculations. Further, an association analysis was conducted between longitudinal traits and gene regions by integrating the micro effects of multiple related variants and using the information of the entire gene region. LFDAT provides a feasible method for studying the formation and expression of longitudinal traits.

RESUMEN

Understanding structure and function of solid-liquid interfaces is essential for the development of nanomaterials for various applications including heterogeneous catalysis in liquid phase processes and water splitting for storage of renewable electricity. The characteristic anisotropy of crystalline nanoparticles is believed to be essential for their performance but remains poorly understood and difficult to characterize. Dual scale atomic force microscopy is used to measure electrostatic and hydration forces of faceted semiconducting SrTiO3 nanoparticles in aqueous electrolyte at variable pH. The following are demonstrated: the ability to quantify strongly facet-dependent surface charges yielding isoelectric points of the dominant {100} and {110} facets that differ by as much as 2 pH units; facet-dependent accumulation of oppositely charged (SiO2 ) particles; and that atomic scale defects can be resolved but are in fact rare for the samples investigated. Atomically resolved images and facet-dependent oscillatory hydration forces suggest a microscopic charge generation mechanism that explains colloidal scale electrostatic forces.

RESUMEN

Solar-light driven CO2 reduction into value-added chemicals and fuels emerges as a significant approach for CO2 conversion. However, inefficient electron-hole separation and the complex multi-electrons transfer processes hamper the efficiency of CO2 photoreduction. Herein, we prepare ferroelectric Bi3TiNbO9 nanosheets and employ corona poling to strengthen their ferroelectric polarization to facilitate the bulk charge separation within Bi3TiNbO9 nanosheets. Furthermore, surface oxygen vacancies are introduced to extend the photo-absorption of the synthesized materials and also to promote the adsorption and activation of CO2 molecules on the catalysts' surface. More importantly, the oxygen vacancies exert a pinning effect on ferroelectric domains that enables Bi3TiNbO9 nanosheets to maintain superb ferroelectric polarization, tackling above-mentioned key challenges in photocatalytic CO2 reduction. This work highlights the importance of ferroelectric properties and controlled surface defect engineering, and emphasizes the key roles of tuning bulk and surface properties in enhancing the CO2 photoreduction performance.

RESUMEN

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technique has emerged as a potentially powerful tool for the detection of trace amounts of environmental contamination and pollutants such as various antibiotics and their active metabolites in the surface aquatic ecosystem (drinking water). In this study, we report the detection method for ciprofloxacin and norfloxacin analytes, two largely used antibiotics in the world, at a very low detection concentration based on the enrichment and efficient delivery of analytes after the evaporation of the solvent on slippery-SERS substrates. The slippery-SERS substrates were fabricated in a very efficient and cost effective way by simply spin-coating the silicone oil onto the widely used glass slides followed by annealing. The analyte particles with gold nanorods (GNRs) were efficiently delivered to the active site by evaporating the aqueous solvent on the slippery surface via the suppression of the coffee ring effect caused by the smooth contraction motion of the base contact radius of the droplet without any pinning. Thus, the detection limits of ciprofloxacin and norfloxacin analytes were reduced to 0.01 ppm, which is the lowest limit of detection achieved by any SERS technique. Finally, this study suggests that the fabricated silicone oil-coated slippery surface and GNRs based combinational approach for the SERS detection technique might be a powerful strategy for the reliable detection of the aqueous pollutant analytes even at very low concentrations.

RESUMEN

The intrinsic magnetism of MoS2 has been extensively investigated via simulations, but few reliable experimental results have been explored. Herein, we develop zigzag-edge rich layered structural MoS2 pyramids via chemical vapor deposition, triggering exceptional ferromagnetism. The magnetic measurements revealed the robust ferromagnetism of MoS2 pyramids compared with MoS2 flakes. The existence of ferromagnetism was mostly attributed to the presence of abundant zigzag-edges in the layered pyramids, confirmed by transmission electron microscopy, vibrating sample magnetometry, and magnetic force microscopy. Moreover, a clearly identified remnant and switchable magnetic moment was revealed for the first time in the MoS2 pyramid. This study provides sound evidence with the zigzag-edge induced ferromagnetism of the MoS2 materials, promising potential magnetic and spintronic applications.

RESUMEN

Water disinfection is of great importance for human health and daily life. Photocatalysts with high efficiency, environmental protection, and narrow bandgaps are critical for practical water treatment. Here, a general approach is reported for the direct growth of pyramid-type MoS2 (pyramid MoS2) on transparent glass by chemical vapor deposition (CVD). The pyramid MoS2 exhibits a smaller bandgap and higher bactericidal activity than most TiO2-based photocatalysts. The adjustable-bandgap nature of two-dimensional (2-D) MoS2 can harvest a wide spectrum of sunlight and provide more active sites with which to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) for bacterial death in water. Furthermore, silver (Ag) with several nanometers thicknesses is thermally evaporated on the pyramid MoS2, which can greatly facilitate electron-hole pair separation to generate more ROS and has a certain bactericidal effect. With our established approach, under simulated visible light, more than 99.99% of Escherichia coli can be successfully deactivated in 40 min, with an effective mass per unit of less than 0.7 mg L-1 in a 0.9 wt % NaCl solution. Besides, for the first time, the generation of ROS is confirmed with in situ Raman spectroscopy on pyramid MoS2@Ag glass, and the related bactericidal mechanism is present as well.

RESUMEN

Nanostructured molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has been considered as one of the most promising catalysts in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), for its approximately intermediate hydrogen binding free energy to noble metals and much lower cost. The catalytically active sites of MoS2 are along the edges, whereas thermodynamically MoS2 favors the presence of a two-dimensional (2-D) basal plane and the catalytically active atoms only constitute a small portion of the material. The lack of catalytically active sites and low catalytic efficiency impede its massive application. To address the issue, we have activated the basal plane of monolayer 2H MoS2 through an ultrathin alumina mask (UTAM)-assisted nanopore arrays patterning, creating a high edge density. The introduced catalytically active sites are identified by Cu electrochemical deposition, and the hydrogen generation properties are assessed in detail. We demonstrate a remarkably improved HER performance as well as the identical catalysis of the artificial edges and the pristine metallic edges of monolayer MoS2. Such a porous monolayer nanostructure can achieve a much higher edge atom ratio than the pristine monolayer MoS2 flakes, which can lead to a much improved catalytic efficiency. This controllable edge engineering can also be extended to the basal plane modifications of other 2-D materials, for improving their edge-related properties.

RESUMEN

Silicon nanowires (SiNWs) are widely used as photocathodes because of their large electrochemically available surface-area density and inherent ability to decouple light absorption from the transport of minority carriers. In order to minimize overpotential for solar-driven hydrogen (H2) production, a combination of an ultrathin molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) layer with SiNWs as photocathode has attracted much attention. Herein, for the first time, this study presents the synthesis of a composite photocathode via direct growth of ultrathin MoS2 nanosheets on SiNWs (referred to as SiNWs/MoS2) by one-step chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Due to the high surface-area density of the arrays of SiNWs, the discontinuous MoS2 nanosheets grown on the SiNWs achieved a much higher density of active sites. Moreover, the coating of MoS2 on the SiNWs was found to protect the photocathode during the photoelectrochemical (PEC) reaction. A high efficiency with photocurrent jsc of 16.5 mA cm-2 (at 0 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode) and an excellent stability over 48 h of PEC operation were achieved under a simulated 1 sun irradiation.
