RESUMEN

Turbulence can disperse a concentrated parcel of pollutants at a rate over nine orders of magnitude higher than its purely diffusive counterpart. One intriguing signature of turbulent dispersion is its superdiffusive scaling. However, the universality of this scaling law is still in question. By leveraging a new laboratory facility, particle pairs with small initial separations can be tracked over four decades of separation in time and five decades of separation in squared displacement, thereby observing the full range of dispersion scaling laws. The results show that the classical Richardson cubic scaling will be reached not for an initial separation asymptotically close to zero but at a critical value, and this value does not appear to depend on the Reynolds number, providing an effective way to study universal dispersion dynamics. Additionally, the results agree well with the prediction based on the multifractal model and may help reconcile different reported scaling laws from laboratory experiments and field studies.

RESUMEN

The record superconducting transition temperature (T(c)) for the iron-based high-temperature superconductors (Fe-HTS) has long been 56 K. Recently, in single-layer FeSe films grown on SrTiO3 substrates, indications of a new record of 65 K have been reported. Using in situ photoemission measurements, we substantiate the presence of spin density waves (SDWs) in FeSe films--a key ingredient of Fe-HTS that was missed in FeSe before--and we find that this weakens with increased thickness or reduced strain. We demonstrate that the superconductivity occurs when the electrons transferred from the oxygen-vacant substrate suppress the otherwise pronounced SDWs in single-layer FeSe. Beyond providing a comprehensive understanding of FeSe films and directions to further enhance its T(c), we map out the phase diagram of FeSe as a function of lattice constant, which contains all the essential physics of Fe-HTS. With the simplest structure, cleanest composition and single tuning parameter, monolayer FeSe is an ideal system for testing theories of Fe-HTS.

A new acidophilic xylanase (XYN11A) from Penicillium oxalicum GZ-2 has been purified, identified and characterized. Synchronized fluorescence spectroscopy was used for the first time to evaluate the influence of metal ions on xylanase activity. The purified enzyme was identified by MALDI TOF/TOF mass spectrometry, and its gene (xyn11A) was identified as an open reading frame of 706 bp with a 68 bp intron. This gene encodes a mature protein of 196 residues with a predicted molecular weight of 21.3 kDa that has the 100 % identity with the putative xylanase from the P. oxalicum 114-2. The enzyme shows a structure comprising a catalytic module family 10 (GH10) and no carbohydrate-binding module family. The specific activities were 150.2, 60.2, and 72.6 U/mg for beechwood xylan, birchwood xylan, and oat spelt xylan, respectively. XYN11A exhibited optimal activity at pH 4.0 and remarkable pH stability under extremely acidic condition (pH 3). The specific activity, K m and V max values were 150.2 U/mg, 30.7 mg/mL, and 403.9 µmol/min/mg for beechwood xylan, respectively. XYN11A is a endo-ß-1,4-xylanase since it release xylobiose and xylotriose as the main products by hydrolyzing xylans. The activity of XYN11A was enhanced 155 % by 1 mM Fe(2+) ions, but was inhibited strongly by Fe(3+). The reason of enhancing the xylanase activity of XYN11A with 1 mM Fe(2+) treatment may be responsible for the change of microenvironment of tryptophan residues studied by synchronous fluorescence spectrophotometry. Inhibition of the xylanase activity by Fe(3+) was first time demonstrated to associate tryptophan fluorescence quenching.

Osteosarcoma (OS) is one of the most prevalent malignancies with a bad prognosis. Oxidative stress is closely associated with various type of cancer. The present study aimed to establish an oxidative stress-related gene prognostic signature. Supported by The Cancer Genome Atlas and Gene Expression Omnibus, the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression, Cox regression, receiver operating characteristic curves and Kaplan-Meier survival analysis were used to construct and validate a prognostic signature and the derived risk score. Tumor microenvironment scores and immune infiltration levels in OS were calculated. Correlation between these parameters and risk score was analyzed. In addition, single analysis of each hub gene was performed. Finally, a series of molecular experiments was used to detect the role of MAP3K5 (one of the hub genes) in OS. A total of five genes most associated with OS prognosis were identified as independent predictors, namely catalase (CAT), mitogen-activated protein kinase 1 (MAPK1), glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase kinase 5 (MAP3K5) and C-C motif chemokine ligand 2 (CCL2). Based on the signature, higher risk score indicated poorer prognosis. Nomogram performed well and reliably predicted 3- and 5-year survival rate in OS. Patients with increasing risk scores had higher tumor purity and lower immune infiltration levels. Compared with an osteoblast cell line, the expression of CAT, CCL2, MAPK1 and G6PD was upregulated and MAP3K5 was downregulated. MAP3K5 inhibited cellular proliferation and motility, promoted cellular apoptosis and induced reactive oxygen species generation. Overall, the signature could effectively predict the prognosis of patients with OS and were expected to be potential biomarkers. And it provided new ideas for understanding the interactions between oxidative stress and OS.

From air-sea gas exchange, oil pollution, to bioreactors, the ubiquitous fragmentation of bubbles/drops in turbulence has been modeled by relying on the classical Kolmogorov-Hinze paradigm since the 1950s. This framework hypothesizes that bubbles/drops are broken solely by eddies of the same size, even though turbulence is well known for its wide spectrum of scales. Here, by designing an experiment that can physically and cleanly disentangle eddies of various sizes, we report the experimental evidence to challenge this hypothesis and show that bubbles are preferentially broken by the sub-bubble-scale eddies. Our work also highlights that fragmentation cannot be quantified solely by the stress criterion or the Weber number; The competition between different time scales is equally important. Instead of being elongated slowly and persistently by flows at their own scales, bubbles are fragmented in turbulence by small eddies via a burst of intense local deformation within a short time.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the fungal community assembly and function during food waste composting with Aneurinibacillus sp. LD3 (LD3) inoculant. Inoculation reduced the content of total organic carbon, moisture content, nitrate nitrogen, and nitrite nitrogen. The LD3 inoculant was able to drive the changes in the assembly of the fungal community. In particular, inoculation with LD3 not only increased the relative abundance of Ascomycota and Trichocomaceae_unclassified for lignocellulose degradation at the mesophilic and cooling stages but also reduced the relative abundances of the opportunistic human pathogen Candida. Saprotroph was the predominant fungal trophic mode in composting, and inoculation with LD3 has a better inactivation effect on animal and plant pathogenic fungi during composting. Furthermore, the variation of the fungal community after inoculation with LD3 was the largest explained by temperature (30.64%). These results implied that LD3 significantly regulated fungal composition and function of food waste composting.

Temperature and field-dependent magnetization M(T, H ) measurements and neutron scattering study of a single crystal CeSb2 are presented. Several anomalies in magnetization curves have been confirmed, i.e., at 15.6 K, 12 K, and 9.8 K, respectively. These three transitions are all metamagnetic transitions, which shift to lower temperatures as the magnetic field increases. In contrast to the previous studies that the anomaly at 15.6 K has been suggested as paramagnetic to ferromagnetic phase transition, in our measurement no hysteresis loop around zero field with either H ∥ c or H ⊥ c has been observed. The anomaly located at around 12 K is antiferromagnetic-like transition, and this turning point will clearly split into two when the magnetic field H ⩾ 2 kOe. A neutron scattering study reveals that the low temperature ground state of CeSb2 orders magnetically with commensurate propagation wave vectors k = (-1, ±1/6, 0) and k = (±1/6, -1, 0), with phase transition temperature T C ∼ 9.8 K.

A vertical water tunnel facility has been constructed to study the dynamics of turbulent multiphase flow. The new system features several unique designs that allow us to study bubble deformation and breakup in strong turbulence: (i) The mean flow can be adjusted to balance the rising velocity of buoyant bubbles/droplets so that they can stay in the view area for an extended period of time. (ii) Turbulence is generated and controlled using a 3D-printed jet array that can fire 88 random high-speed momentum jets with the individual jet velocity of up to 12 m/s. This component allows us to attain turbulence with a high energy dissipation rate (≥0.1 m2/s3), which is orders-of-magnitude higher than most of the existing turbulent multiphase flow facilities. (iii) Turbulence generated in the test section is nearly homogeneous and isotropic, and the turbulent fluctuations are also decoupled from the mean flow. The resulting turbulence intensity can be varied between 20% and 80% with the speed of the mean flow at around 0.2 m/s. (iv) This system has an octagonal test section that allows six cameras to image and reconstruct the 3D shape of deforming bubbles/droplets in turbulence. The same set of cameras was also used for tracking tracers in the surrounding turbulent flow. Both the reconstruction and particle tracking were completed using our in-house codes that were parallelized to run on high-performance computing clusters efficiently.

Searching for heavy fermion (HF) states in non-f-electron systems becomes an interesting issue, especially in the presence of magnetism, and can help explain the physics of complex compounds. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy, physical properties measurements, and the first-principles calculations, we observe the HF state in a 3d-electron van der Waals ferromagnet, Fe3GeTe2. Upon entering the ferromagnetic state, a massive spectral weight transfer occurs, which results from the exchange splitting. Meanwhile, the Fermi surface volume and effective electron mass are both enhanced. When the temperature drops below a characteristic temperature T*, heavy electrons gradually emerge with further enhanced effective electron mass. The coexistence of ferromagnetism and HF state can be well interpreted by the dual properties (itinerant and localized) of 3d electrons. This work expands the limit of ferromagnetic HF materials from f- to d-electron systems and illustrates the positive correlation between ferromagnetism and HF state in the 3d-electron material, which is quite different from the f-electron systems.

We have successfully synthesized single crystals of UAu0.8Sb2 using a flux method and present a comprehensive study of its physical properties by measuring the magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity and specific heat. Evidence for at least three magnetic phases is observed in the field-temperature phase diagram of UAu0.8Sb2. In zero field, the system undergoes an antiferromagnetic transition at 71 K, and upon further cooling it passes through another antiferromagnetic phase with a ferromagnetic component, before reaching a ferromagnetic ground state. A complex magnetic field-temperature phase diagram is obtained for fields along the easy c-axis, where the antiferromagnetic order eventually becomes polarized upon applying a magnetic field.

We show the three-dimensional electronic structure of the Kondo lattice CeIn3 using soft x-ray angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy in the paramagnetic state. For the first time, we have directly observed the three-dimensional topology of the Fermi surface of CeIn3 by photoemission. The Fermi surface has a complicated hole pocket centred at the Γ-Z line and an elliptical electron pocket centred at the R point of the Brillouin zone. Polarization and photon-energy dependent photoemission results both indicate the nearly localized nature of the 4f electrons in CeIn3, consistent with the theoretical prediction by means of the combination of density functional theory and single-site dynamical mean-field theory. Those results illustrate that the f electrons of CeIn3, which is the parent material of CeMIn5 compounds, are closer to the localized description than the layered CeMIn5 compounds.

Ralstonia solanacearum (Smith) is an important soil-borne pathogen worldwide. We investigated the effects of a new bioorganic fertilizer, BIO62, which was made from organic fertilizer and antagonist Bacillus amyloliquefaciens HR62, on the control of bacterial wilt of tomato in greenhouse condition. The results showed that the application of BIO62 significantly decreased disease incidence by 65% and strongly reduced R. solanacearum populations both in the rhizosphere soil (8.04 log cfu g(-1) dry soil) and crown sections (5.63 log cfu g(-1) fresh plant section) at 28 days after pathogen challenge. Antibacterial compounds produced by HR62 were purified by silica gel, Sephadex LH-20, and HPLC and then identified using HPLC/electrospray ionization mass spectrometry analysis. Macrolactin A and 7-O-malonyl macrolactin A (molecular weights of 402 and 488 Da, respectively), along with surfactin B (molecular weights of 994, 1008, 1022, and 1036 Da), were observed to inhibit the growth of R. solanacearum.

BACKGROUND: Bacterial wilt caused by Ralstonia solanacearum (RS) is a serious threat for agricultural production. In this study, Bacillus amyloliquefaciens strains CM-2 and T-5 antagonistic to RS were used to create bioorganic fertilisers to control tomato wilt under greenhouse conditions. The possible mechanism of resistance inducement by the antagonistic bacteria was also evaluated. RESULTS: The application of bioorganic fertilisers significantly reduced incidences of tomato wilt (by 63-74%), promoted plant growth and significantly reduced the RS populations in rhizosphere compared with the control. Both strains CM-2 and T-5 applied with bioorganic fertilisers survived well in the tomato rhizosphere. Tomato seedlings treated with cell suspension of T-5 followed by challenge inoculation with RS increased the activities of polyphenol oxidase, phenylalanine ammonia lyase and peroxidase compared with the untreated control. Furthermore, the expressions of the marker genes responsible for synthesis of phytohormones salicylic acid, ethylene and jasmonic acid in seedlings treated with T-5 in response to inoculated pathogen were significantly higher. CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that strains CM-2 and T-5 containing bioorganic fertilisers effectively control tomato wilt. Increased enzyme activities and expression of defence genes in plants indicated that the antagonistic bacteria induced plant resistance, which was the potential biocontrol mechanism of tomato wilt.

Multiple acidophilic xylanolytic enzymes were produced by Penicillium oxalicum GZ-2 during growth on wheat straw, rice straw, corn stover, and wheat bran. The expression of xylanase isoforms was dependent on substrate type and nitrogen source. The zymograms produced by the SDS-PAGE resolution of the crude enzymes indicated that wheat straw was the best inducer, resulting in the highest xylanase (115.2U/mL) and ß-xylosidase (89mU/mL) activities during submerged fermentation. The optimum temperature and pH for xylanase activity were 50°C and 4.0, respectively; however, the crude xylanase enzymes exhibited remarkable stability over a broad pH range and showed more than 90% activity at 50°C for 30min at pH 4.0-8.0. The results revealed that P. oxalicum GZ-2 is a promising acidophilic xylanase-producing microorganism that has great potential to be used in biofuels, animal feed, and food industry applications.

A total of 98 isolates with antagonistic activity against Phytophthora capsici were isolated from the rhizosphere soil of healthy pepper plants in the fields seriously infected by pepper Phytophthora capsicit, and two strains named as HL-3 and LZ-8 were screened, which had the characteristics of wide-spectrum antagonism and good growth under poor soil condition. The HL-3 and LZ-8 were identified as Paenibacillus polymyxa and Bacillus pumilus, respectively, based on their morphological and biochemical characteristics and 16S rDNA sequences. The two strains could inhibit the mycelium growth of P. capsici, and the inhibitory effect of HL-3 and LZ-8 was 72% and 68%, respectively. The two strains also had antifungal activities toward other plant pathogens such as Verticillium dahliae, Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cucumerinum, F. oxysporum f. sp. vasinfectum, Rhizoctonia solani, Phtophthora parasitica var. nicotiana, and Ralstonia solanacearum. Pot experiment showed that the biocontrol effects of HL-3 and LZ-8 against P. capsici at the seedling stage of pepper were 72% and 83%, respectively, and both of the strains had significant growth-promoting effect on pepper plants.

OBJECTIVE: Functional constipation (FC) is a common complaint in childhood but the prevalence still remains unclear, the aim of this study was to explore the prevalence of FC in childhood in the northern parts of China. METHODS: A screening program on FC in childhood was carried out in 5 northern cities (Beijing, Tianjin, Shenyang, Changchun, Harbin) of China according to symptoms under the Rome III criteria. Random clustered sampling of the inhabitants was carried out under stratification of cities, geographic zones, schools or nurseries. Sample size of each area was in proportion to the population of the area. The range of age was 4-14. All subjects under study were requested to fill in a questionnaire distributed by the teachers. The screening program was carried out immediately after a section survey was completed. All together, 20 000 questionnaires were distributed with 19 638 retrievals. According to the result of the screening, a small number of patients who met the criteria were further selected to undergo a detailed clinical examination in the hospital including laboratory examination, colonic transit time, defecography or/and barium enema, electromyologram and anorectal manometry to exclude organic disease of the colon. Simultaneously, a detailed questionnaire was requested to fill under the assistance of trained doctors or medical students. Prevalence of FC of the population was adjusted by the rate of correct diagnosis from the detailed study. RESULTS: The adjusted point prevalence of FC in 5 northern cities of China according to Rome III criteria was 4.73% with higher prevalence rate of FC seen in the Beijing area (5.02%) than in other cities (4.82%, 4.76%, 4.27%, 4.40%, with P < 0.001). Male to female ratio was 1.26:1 with majority of the FC fell in the 4 - 6 year olds (5.76%). CONCLUSION: FC appeared a common disorder in childhood in the northern parts of China which called for greater attention. Higher prevalence was noted in the age groups of 4-6.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the symptomatic criteria for diagnosis in children with functional constipation(FC) in North China. METHODS: A screening program for FC in children was carried out in 5 northern cities (Beijing, Tianjin, Shenyang, Changchun, Harbin) of China according to symptoms using Rome III( criteria. Random clustered sampling of the inhabitants was carried out under stratification of city, region and school or kindergarten. Sample size of each area was in proportion to the population of the area. The range of age was 4-14. All the subjects were requested to fill in a questionnaire distributed by the teacher. The screening program was carried out immediately after a plot survey. A total of 20,000 questionnaires were distributed and 19,638 retrieved. According to the result of the screening, a small number of patients who fulfilled the criteria were further selected to undergo detail clinical examinations in the hospital including laboratory examination, colonic transit time, defecography or/and barium enema, electromyogram and anorectal manometry to exclude organic disease of the colon. A detailed questionnaire was filled in with the assistance from a trained doctor or a medical student. Potential risk factors and the relative symptoms were explored by comparing frequencies between FC group and non-FC group using χ2 and Logistic analysis. RESULTS: Eighteen symptoms (defecation less than 3 times per week, dry hard sausage-shape stool, difficulty in defecation, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, etc) could exist in control group, but FC group had a higher frequency. The difference was statistically significant. Multivariable stepwise logistic regression analysis showed that defecation less than 3 times per week, hard sausage-shape feces, difficulty in defecation, and the need for laxative were associated with FC. The absence of other symptoms had no influence on diagnosis of FC. The sensitivity, specificity and diagnostic accuracy of symptomatic standard diagnostic test based on Rome III( criteria in FC children showed that ≥2 items had the best diagnostic accuracy but moderate sensitivity and specificity. CONCLUSION: The symptomatic criteria for FC diagnosis in children are suggested as follows: (1) defecation frequency less than 3 times per week; (2) dry, hard, sausage-shape stool in most defecation; (3) difficulty in most defecation; (4) use of medication or digital evacuation. FC can be considered when 2 of the above 4 criteria are met and the symptoms last at least 2 months.
