RESUMEN

Beefalo is a fertile hybrid descendant of domestic cattle (Bos taurus) and American buffalo (Bison bison). Crossbred (¾Beefalo»Nellore) beef cattle raised and finished in a feedlot or on pasture were evaluated for the effect of two ages (8 and 13 months) at castration on nutrient intake, performance, and carcass characteristics. In the feedlot, they received a total diet with a roughage:concentrate ratio of 55:45, and those kept on Brachiaria decumbens pastures were supplemented at 0.8% of body weight (BW) with the same concentrate based on corn and soybean meal (17.8% CP and 73% TDN). Thirty-six crossbred (¾ Beefalo » Nellore) beef cattle with 209.2 ± 14.6 kg BW were used, which at weaning, at 8 months of age, were randomly divided into two groups, one of them destined to the feedlot system and the other group to the supplementation system on pasture. In each system (feedlot and pasture) the following treatments were distributed: castration at 8 months (at weaning, C8), castration at 13 months (C13), and non-castrated (NC), with six animals per treatment by system. All animals were slaughtered at 18 months of age. There was no significant interaction between the systems and castration ages for all variables studied. The averages of slaughter weight of feedlot animals were 475.6; 494.3 and 510.7 kg; and finished in pasture were 424.3; 428.0 and 418.7 kg for C8, C13, and NC treatments, respectively. The average subcutaneous fat thickness of the feedlot steers were 4.5, 3.5, and 1.3 mm, and for pasture-finished steers were 2.4, 1.6, and 1.8 mm for C8, C13, and NC treatments, respectively. Non-castrated animals have greater performance and carcass characteristics than castrated animals independent of the finished system. Animals non-castrated finished on Brachiaria grass pastures and slaughtered at 18 months of age require more intensive feeding management or even greater age at slaughter to obtain an ideal carcass finishing despite castration.

This study aimed to evaluate performance, to evaluate performance, carcass traits, feeding behavior, and humoral immune response in Nellore and Angus × Nellore steers fed whole shelled corn diets. Sixteen Nellore and 16 Angus × Nellore steers with 353 ± 25.3 kg were randomly assigned into 2 feeding groups, whole shelled corn without forage (WSC) or whole shelled corn and sugarcane bagasse (WSCB). The data were analyzed using the MIXED procedure of SAS (SAS Inst. Inc., Cary, NC, USA). Angus × Nellore steers had greater final BW, DMI, ADG, and subcutaneous fat thickness than Nellore. Moreover, Nellore steers had lower neutral detergent fiber (NDF) intake but spent more time ruminating and had a greater rumination rate of NDF. Regarding the diets, steers fed the WSCB had greater DMI and spent more time chewing and ruminating. Nellore × Angus steers had a greater haptoglobin concentration. The concentration of D-Lactate tended to be greater in the Nellore steers regardless of diet. In conclusion, the use of sugarcane bagasse in WSC diets increases DMI and ADG without affecting feed efficiency or the carcass traits of the steers. Although Angus × Nellore steers have increased haptoglobin concentration, this effect was not enough to reduce the performance of these animals.

This study aimed to evaluate relationships among maternal residual feed intake (RFI) with growth performance and expression of genes involved in lipid metabolism in offspring of Nellore cattle. Fifty-three cows classified as negative or positive RFI by genomic prediction were exposed to fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI) protocols at 2 and 3 years of age using semen from the same bull. In the first year, cows gestated under grazing conditions and nursed their calves in the feedlot. In the second year, the opposite occurred. Cows were weighed every 28 days during pregnancy and calves were weighed at birth and every 28 days until weaning. Ultrasound images were collected from the carcass of cows and calves. Muscle gene expression was evaluated in calves at birth and weaning. Data were analyzed by year considering the fixed effects of RFI class and FTAI protocol for variables measured in cows, and RFI class, FTAI protocol and sex for variables measured in calves. There was no effect of maternal RFI on calves performance in the first year. Lower expression of FABP4 gene and trend towards lower expression of SREBF1 and LPL genes were detected in samples collected after birth from calves born to negative RFI cows, indicating that adipogenesis was reduced during the fetal and neonatal period. In the second year, negative RFI cows had greater subcutaneous fat thickness than positive RFI cows, and their calves tended to be heavier at birth and to have less rump fat thickness at weaning. No significant differences in expression of genes studied were detected between cow RFI classes. Nellore cows classified as negative RFI consume less feed and produce calves whose growth potential is similar to that of calves produced by positive RFI cows.

Two studies were carried out, the first with the objective to evaluate performance, beef quality and expression of genes involved in lipid metabolism in the muscle of bulls fed with or without low-fat dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS, 21% DM) in the diet. In the second, eight rumen-fistulated bulls were assigned in a switch back design to evaluate the fatty acid profile of omasal fluid. We hypothesized that bulls fed DDGS may have an improved fatty acid profile and expression of genes involved in lipid metabolism may be altered, without affecting performance. Bulls fed DDGS had greater (P < .05) concentrations of PUFA n-6 in the omasum and muscle. CLA t10, c12 content was higher and there was lower expression of the LPL gene (P = .05) in the muscle of animals fed DDGS (P = .03). In conclusion, DDGS can be used as a protein feedstuff because it maintains beef quality.

One hundred twenty Angus × Simmental steers [322 ± 4.8 kg initial body weight (BW)] were blocked by BW and randomly allocated to 4 treatments arranged as a 2 × 2 factorial to evaluate the effects of supplemental arginine (none or 63 g/d of a 15.6% metabolizable arginine), supplemental lysine (none or 40 g/d of a 25% metabolizable lysine), and their interaction on performance and carcass composition of feedlot steers during a 170-d feeding period. The basal diet [dry matter (DM) basis] contained 52% dry-rolled corn, 22% dried distillers grains with solubles, 20% corn silage, and 6% vitamin-mineral supplement. Lysine balance was estimated to be -10.3 to -10.8 g for diets that did not contain supplemental lysine, and arginine supply was estimated to be +9.7 g for diets that did not contain supplemental arginine during period 1 (days 0 to 87). Lysine and arginine supplies met or exceeded requirements in period 2 (days 88 to 170). Rumen-protected arginine and lysine were top dressed daily until slaughter at a common BW (622 ± 5.5 kg). Data were analyzed using the MIXED procedure of SAS. Body weight, average daily gain, and DM intake were not affected (P ≥ 0.14) by arginine or lysine supplementation. However, lysine increased gain:feed (P = 0.05) during period 1. Lysine decreased serum urea nitrogen (P = 0.03) on day 87, increased (P = 0.01) longissimus muscle (LM) area, decreased (P ≤ 0.01) fat thickness and yield grade, and tended (P = 0.06) to increase moisture content of LM steaks. There tended to be an interaction for moisture content of steaks (P = 0.09), where arginine supplementation increased moisture content to a greater extent in steaks from cattle supplemented with lysine compared with steaks from cattle not fed supplemental lysine. Arginine tended to increase the proportion of Choice grade carcasses (P = 0.09) but did not change lipid content of steaks (P = 0.59). Arginine tended to decrease serum glutamate (P = 0.09) and lysine (P = 0.07) after 87 d of feeding. In conclusion, supplemental rumen-protected arginine and lysine did not improve performance, but lysine can increase carcass muscle and leanness, and although arginine did not increase lipid content of steaks, it may favorably shift carcasses to a greater quality grade.
