RESUMEN

Scientific exploration of phototrophic bacteria over nearly 200 years has revealed large phylogenetic gaps between known phototrophic groups that limit understanding of how phototrophy evolved and diversified1,2. Here, through Boreal Shield lake water incubations, we cultivated an anoxygenic phototrophic bacterium from a previously unknown order within the Chloroflexota phylum that represents a highly novel transition form in the evolution of photosynthesis. Unlike all other known phototrophs, this bacterium uses a type I reaction centre (RCI) for light energy conversion yet belongs to the same bacterial phylum as organisms that use a type II reaction centre (RCII) for phototrophy. Using physiological, phylogenomic and environmental metatranscriptomic data, we demonstrate active RCI-utilizing metabolism by the strain alongside usage of chlorosomes3 and bacteriochlorophylls4 related to those of RCII-utilizing Chloroflexota members. Despite using different reaction centres, our phylogenomic data provide strong evidence that RCI-utilizing and RCII-utilizing Chloroflexia members inherited phototrophy from a most recent common phototrophic ancestor. The Chloroflexota phylum preserves an evolutionary record of the use of contrasting phototrophic modes among genetically related bacteria, giving new context for exploring the diversification of phototrophy on Earth.

It is found that, in the studies of heavy ion transport with gyrokinetic simulations, the ion parallel drift frequency can reverse sign in velocity space when the amplitude variation of the electrostatic potential fluctuation is strong along the magnetic field line. As a result, the particle transport related to the parallel dynamics is strongly enhanced. It is noted that, while parallel gradient of the fluctuation amplitude can be instigated by a large magnetic shear or safety factor in a tokamak, the generic mechanism is independent of its cause, which suggests broader applications to kinetic plasma problems. Some relevant topics are briefly addressed in the end.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of cashew nut shell extract (CNSE) and monensin on ruminal in vitro fermentation, CH4 production, and ruminal bacterial community structure. Treatments were as follows: control (CON, basal diet without additives); 2.5 µM monensin (MON); 0.1 mg CNSE granule/g DM (CNSE100); and 0.2 mg CNSE granule/g DM (CNSE200). Each treatment was incubated with 52 mL of buffered ruminal content and 500 mg of total mixed ration for 24 h using serum vials. The experiment was performed as a complete randomized block design with 3 runs. Run was used as a blocking factor. Each treatment had 5 replicates, in which 2 were used to determine nutrient degradability, and 3 were used to determine pH, NH3-N, volatile fatty acids, lactate, total gas, CH4 production, and bacterial community composition. Treatment responses for all data, excluding bacterial abundance, were analyzed with the GLIMMIX procedure of SAS v9.4. Treatment responses for bacterial community structure were analyzed with a PERMANOVA test run with the R package vegan. Orthogonal contrasts were used to test the effects of (1) additive inclusion (ADD: CON vs. MON, CNSE100, and CNSE200); (2) additive type (MCN: MON vs. CNSE100 and CNSE200); and (3) CNSE dose (DOS: CNSE100 vs. CNSE200). We observed that pH, acetate, and acetate:propionate ratio in the CNSE100 treatment were lower compared with CNSE200, and propionate in the CNSE100 treatment was greater compared with CNSE200. Compared with MON, CNSE treatments tended to decrease total lactate concentration. Total gas production of CON was greater by 2.63% compared with all treatments, and total CH4 production was reduced by 10.64% in both CNSE treatments compared with MON. Also, compared with MON, in vitro dry matter degradabilities in CNSE treatments were lower. No effects were observed for NH3-N or in vitro neutral detergent fiber degradability. Finally, the relative abundances of Prevotella, Treponema, and Schwartzia were lower, whereas the relative abundances of Butyrivibrio and Succinivibrio were greater in all treatments compared with CON. Overall, the inclusion of CNSE decreased CH4 production compared with MON, making CNSE a possible CH4 mitigation additive in dairy cattle diets.

The objective of this study was to compare cashew nutshell extract (CNSE) to monensin and evaluate changes in in vitro mixed ruminal microorganism fermentation, nutrient digestibility, and microbial nitrogen outflow. Treatments were randomly assigned to 8 fermenters in a replicated 4 × 4 Latin square design with 4 experimental periods of 10 d (7 d for diet adaptation and 3 d for sample collection). Basal diets contained 43.5:56.5 forage: concentrate ratio and each fermenter was fed 106 g of DM/d divided equally between 2 feeding times. Treatments were control (CON, basal diet without additives), 2.5 µM monensin (MON), 0.1 mg CNSE granule/g DM (CNSE100), and 0.2 mg CNSE granule/g DM (CNSE200). On d 8 to10, samples were collected for pH, lactate, NH3-N, volatile fatty acids (VFA), mixed protozoa counts, organic matter (OM), and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) digestibility. Data were analyzed with the GLIMMIX procedure of SAS. Orthogonal contrasts were used to test the effects of (1) ADD (CON vs. MON, CNSE100, and CNSE200); (2) MCN (MON vs. CNSE100 and CNSE200); and (3) DOSE (CNSE100 vs. CNSE200). We observed that butyrate concentration in all treatments was lower compared with CON and the concentration for MON was lower compared with CNSE treatments. Protozoal population in all treatments was lower compared with CON. No effects were observed for pH, lactate, NH3-N, total VFA, OM, or N utilization. Within the 24-h pool, protozoal generation time, tended to be lower, while NDF digestibility tended to be greater in response to all additives. Furthermore, the microbial N flow, and the efficiency of N use tended to be lower for the monensin treatment compared with CNSE treatments. Overall, our results showed that both monensin and CNSE decreased butyrate synthesis and protozoal populations, while not affecting OM digestibility and tended to increase NDF digestibility; however, such effects are greater with monensin than CNSE nutshell.

Cashew nut shell extract (CNSE) is a byproduct of the cashew nut industry, containing bioactive compounds that alter rumen fermentation patterns. Therefore, study objectives were to evaluate the effects of CNSE (59% anacardic acid and 18% cardol) on production, rumen fermentation variables, metabolism, and inflammation in transition dairy cows. A total of 51 multiparous Holstein cows were used in a randomized design and assigned to treatment based on their previous 305-d mature equivalent milk and parity. Cows were assigned to 1 of 2 treatments 21 d before expected calving: (1) CON (control diet; n = 17) or (2) CNSE-5.0 (control diet and 5.0 g/d CNSE granule [containing 50% CNSE]; n = 34). Following parturition, 17 cows (preselected at initial treatment assignment) from the CNSE-5.0 treatment were reallocated into a third treatment group: CNSE-2.5 (control diet and 2.5 g/d CNSE granule; n = 17), resulting in 3 total treatments postpartum: (1) CON, (2) CNSE-2.5, and (3) CNSE-5.0. Prepartum rumen pH was unaltered by treatment; however, postpartum rumen pH was increased (0.31 units) in CNSE cows relative to CON. Prepartum rumen ammonia N concentration tended to be decreased (34%) in CNSE-5.0 cows compared with CON, and there tended to be a quadratic effect on postpartum ammonia N, as it was decreased in CNSE-2.5 compared with CON and CNSE-5.0. Prepartum dry matter intake (DMI) was unaffected by treatment; however, postpartum DMI was increased (8%) in CNSE cows relative to CON. No treatment differences were observed in pre- or postpartum digestibility measurements. Milk and protein yields from cows fed CNSE tended to be increased (6% and 7%, respectively) relative to CON. No treatment differences were detected for energy-corrected milk, feed efficiency, body weight, body condition score, energy balance, milk composition, milk urea nitrogen, or somatic cell count. Prepartum fecal pH decreased (0.12 units) in CNSE-5.0 cows relative to CON cows but was similar between treatments postpartum. Supplementing CNSE did not affect prepartum glucose, nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA), ß-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), or insulin. However, prepartum circulating blood urea nitrogen tended to be decreased and glucagon was decreased in CNSE-5.0 cows compared with CON (9 and 20%, respectively). Additionally, CNSE supplementation decreased glucose and insulin concentrations postpartum relative to CON cows (6% and 20%, respectively). Quadratic effects were detected for postpartum circulating NEFA and BHB such that their levels were increased in CNSE-2.5 cows relative to CON and CNSE-5.0. Pre- and postpartum circulating serum amyloid A, lipopolysaccharide-binding protein, and haptoglobin were unaffected by treatment. Overall, CNSE influenced some key rumen fermentation variables, altered postabsorptive metabolism, and increased production parameters in transition dairy cows.

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic was reported to have increased depression among university students which was associated with impairments in their campus lives. This study examined changes in depressive states among Japanese university students during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: A secondary data analysis from a factorial randomized controlled trial involving smartphone-based cognitive-behavioral therapy was performed. Six cohorts (N = 1626) underwent an 8-week intervention during the spring or autumn of 2019-2021, with a 9-month follow-up. We evaluated participants' depressive states weekly using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) during the intervention, with monthly evaluations thereafter. The follow-up periods included Japan's four states of emergency (SOEs) to control COVID-19. Hypothesizing that SOEs caused a sudden worsening of depressive states, Study 1 compared the cohorts' PHQ-9 scores, and Study 2 employed time series analysis with a mixed-effects model to estimate identified changes in PHQ-9 scores. RESULTS: Although no changes in depressive states were observed in relation to the SOEs, Study 1 identified sudden increases in PHQ-9 scores at the 28-week evaluation point, which corresponded to the beginning of the new academic year for the three autumn cohorts. In contrast, the three spring cohorts did not exhibit similar changes. Study 2 showed that, for all three autumn cohorts (n = 522), the 0.60-point change was significant (95% CI 0.42-0.78; p < .001) at 28 weeks; that is, when their timeline was interrupted. CONCLUSIONS: While the results do not indicate any notable impact of the SOEs, they highlight the influence of the new academic year on university students' mental health during COVID-19. There is considerable concern regarding antibiotic resistance in the water environment due to antibiotic residues from anthropogenic origins. The low antibiotic concentration in the water environment may promote the selection of antibiotic resistance. However, it is unclear how environmental factors affect resistance selection. We investigated the proliferation of quinolone-susceptible faecal bacteria (E. coli) exposed to low norfloxacin concentration (ng/L) at variable temperatures, exposure times, and carbon concentrations, simulating the conditions of the water environment. The induction of antibiotic resistance in thirteen E. coli isolates was more likely to occur at 37 °C. However, resistance also occurred at temperatures as low as 25 °C, provided a longer exposure time of 5 days. These results suggest that antibiotic resistance is more likely to be induced in regions where temperatures may reach 25-37 °C, such as tropical regions.

Although increasing evidence demonstrates the association between intestinal dysbiosis and pancreatic diseases such as chronic pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer, it remains largely unknown whether intestinal dysbiosis is involved in the immunopathogenesis of autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP). Recently, we found that intestinal dysbiosis mediates experimental AIP via the activation of plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs), which can produce interferon (IFN)-α and interleukin (IL)-33. However, candidate intestinal bacteria, which promote the development of AIP, have not been identified. Fecal samples were obtained from type 1 AIP patients before and after prednisolone (PSL) treatment and subjected to 16S ribosomal RNA sequencing to evaluate the composition of intestinal bacteria. Induction of remission by PSL was associated with the complete disappearance of Klebsiella species from feces in two of the three analyzed patients with type 1 AIP. To assess the pathogenicity of Klebsiella species, mild experimental AIP was induced in MRL/MpJ mice by repeated injections of 10 µg of polyinosinic-polycytidylic acid [poly(I:C)], in combination with oral administration of heat-killed Klebsiella pneumoniae. The AIP pathology score was significantly higher in MRL/MpJ mice that received both oral administration of heat-killed K. pneumoniae and intraperitoneal injections of poly(I:C) than in those administered either agent alone. Pancreatic accumulation of pDCs capable of producing large amounts of IFN-α and IL-33 was also significantly higher in mice that received both treatments. These data suggest that intestinal colonization by K. pneumoniae may play an intensifying role in the development of type 1 AIP.

OBJECTIVES: Social relationships may help in maintaining functional status among older adults. This study examined the types of social relationships that were related to functional status among Japanese community-dwelling older adults. STUDY DESIGN: This is a prospective cohort study. METHODS: We used baseline data from 2008 and conducted follow-up surveys six years later. Participants included individuals older than 65 years who lived in a suburban community in Japan. The Index of Social Interaction measure was used to assess multiple elements of social relationships. Two functional status outcomes were set: (1) functional decline and (2) functional decline and mortality. A multiple logistic regression model was used to examine the association between social relationships and functional decline six years later. RESULTS: After controlling for age, sex, family structure and disease status in 2008, poor social curiosity (odds ratio [OR] = 1.31, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.02-1.69) and interaction (OR = 2.57, 95% CI: 1.20-5.51) were found to be associated with functional decline. Furthermore, social curiosity (OR = 1.39, 95% CI: 1.14-1.69) and interaction (OR = 2.84, 95% CI: 1.44-5.59) were also associated with the composite outcome. CONCLUSIONS: Social curiosity and interacting with others were significantly associated with functional status. Promotion of social interaction may be essential for preventing future need for care.

In the brain of holometabolous insects such as the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster, the fruitless gene produces sex-specific gene products under the control of the sex-specific splicing cascade and contributes to the formation of the sexually dimorphic circuits. Similar sex-specific gene products of fruitless homologues have been identified in other holometabolous insects such as mosquitoes and a parasitic wasp, suggesting the fruitless-dependent neural sex-determination system is widely conserved amongst holometabolous insects. However, it remains obscure whether the fruitless-dependent neural sex-determination system is present in basal hemimetabolous insects. To address this issue, identification, characterization, and expression analyses of the fruitless homologue were conducted in the two-spotted cricket, Gryllus bimaculatus, as a model hemimetabolous insect. The Gryllus fruitless gene encodes multiple isoforms with a unique zinc finger domain, and does not encode a sex-specific gene product. The Gryllus Fruitless protein is broadly expressed in the neurones and glial cells in the brain, and there was no prominent sex-related difference in the expression levels of Gryllus fruitless isoforms. The results suggest that the Gryllus fruitless gene is not involved in the neural sex-determination in the cricket brain.

Plasma ß dependence of electromagnetic turbulent transport is investigated by means of gyrokinetic simulations with self-consistent change of the equilibrium magnetic field. It is found that energy transport due to ion-temperature-gradient (ITG) driven turbulence does not decrease with increasing ß; that is, the ion energy diffusivity does not decrease, and the electron energy diffusivity increases with ß. This is because magnetic fluctuations are significantly influenced by the background magnetic field structure change with ß by the Pfirsch-Schluter current. The magnetic field change weakens the suppression effect of magnetic perturbations on the growth of the ITG mode, and it also suppresses nonlinear zonal flow production. The influence of the magnetic field change is significant as the global magnetic shear increases.

INTRODUCTION: Several studies have reported that single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the gene encoding NF-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) contribute to airflow limitations in smokers without COPD. Although small airway lesions and emphysema contribute cooperatively to airflow limitation, the relationship between Nrf2 SNPs and the development of emphysema in smokers without COPD is not well understood. METHODS: Healthy subjects who underwent an annual health checkup with computed tomography (CT) of the chest at Osaka City University Hospital were prospectively recruited. The percentage of low-attenuation area (%LAA) on chest CT was quantified, and correlations between %LAA, Nrf2 SNP [rs6726395 (G/A)] genotypes, and clinical characteristics were examined. RESULTS: A total of 245 subjects without COPD [non-/light-smoker: 153 (62.4%) and smoker: 92 (37.6%)] were enrolled. The %LAA in the upper lung field was higher than that in the lower lung field (p < 0.001). The %LAA in smokers was significantly higher than that in non-/light-smokers (p = 0.021). The %LAA showed significant but weak correlation with age in all subjects (r = 0.141, p = 0.028). Divided by genotype, the %LAA of the upper lung field was significantly correlated with age in smokers with genotype GG (wild type) (r = 0.333, p = 0.022), but was not significantly correlated with age in smokers with genotype AG/AA. These correlations were not observed in non-/light smokers. CONCLUSION: A polymorphism rs6726395 in Nrf2 can contribute to the development of emphysema-associated aging in smokers. The Nrf2 SNP may be a predictive factor for smoking-induced emphysema, and genotyping of Nrf2 SNP may serve as biomarker for emphysema prevention.

The objective of this study is to identify the effects of statins and risk factors for thrombosis in patients with new onset of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) with or without antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL). Consecutive patients with SLE without history of thrombotic events were retrospectively enrolled from April 1997 to February 2014. The development of first thrombosis and death caused by thrombosis were defined as the study endpoint. Risk and protective factors for developing thrombosis were analyzed. A total of 152 patients, 80 positive and 72 negative for aPL, were included. In aPL-positive patients, 15 developed arterial ( n = 6) and venous ( n = 9) thrombosis (median follow-up period 69 months). Cox's proportional hazards model showed that older age at SLE onset and IgG-anticardiolipin antibodies (aCL) were statistically significant risks for thrombosis. Statin therapy was identified as a statistically significant protective factor against thrombosis (hazard ratio 0.12, 95% confidence interval 0.01-0.98). In aPL-negative patients (median follow-up period 46 months), seven patients developed thrombosis (five arterial and two venous). No risk factors for thrombosis were found in this group. In aPL-positive patients with SLE, the late disease onset and the presence of IgG-aCL represented additional risk factors for thrombosis. Statin treatment appeared as a protective factor for thrombosis.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to elucidate the diagnostic value of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (PET)-computed tomography (CT) for lateral pelvic lymph node (LPN) metastasis in rectal cancer treated with preoperative chemoradiotherapy (CRT). METHODS: Eighteen rectal cancer patients with enlarged (≥ 8 mm) LPNs were treated with CRT followed by total mesorectal excision with LPN dissection during 2012-2015. After CRT, LPN maximum standard uptake values (SUVmax) were measured using PET/CT and long diameters of LPNs were measured using CT or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). LPN size and SUVmax were compared with pathological status in the resected specimen. Radiologically identified nodes were matched with surgically resected nodes by separate examination of 4 lymph nodal regions: internal iliac, obturator, external iliac and common iliac lymph nodes. RESULTS: In total, 34 LPNs were located by CT or MRI. Metastatic LPNs were significantly larger than non-metastatic LPNs (size, mean ± standard deviation: 13.0 ± 8.3 vs. 4.9 ± 3.5 mm, p < 0.01). SUVmax was determinable for 28 of the LPNs, among which metastatic LPNs were found to have significantly higher SUVmax than non-metastatic LPNs (mean ± standard deviation: 2.2 ± 1.3 vs. 1.2 ± 0.3, p < 0.01). Receiver operating characteristic analysis suggested optimal cutoff values of size = 12 mm which had an accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive value (NPV) of 82.1, 70.6, 100, 100, and 68.8%, respectively. An SUVmax = 1.6 had an accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, PPV, and NPV of 85.7, 76.5, 100, 100, and 73.3%, respectively. When LPNs that were ≥ 12 mm in size and/or had an SUV ≥ 1.6, the accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, PPV, and NPV were 92.9, 88.2, 100, 100, and 84.6%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: After CRT, PET/CT alone or in combination with CT and MRI can predict the presence of metastatic LPN with a high degree of accuracy. PET/CT may be useful in selecting patients with rectal cancer who would benefit from LPN dissection in addition to TME. These results need to be confirmed by larger studies.

This study clarifies the location, size and age at the onset of metamorphosis in Japanese eels Anguilla japonica through oceanic surveys, rearing experiments and analyses of the morphology and otoliths of leptocephali and glass eels. Twenty-eight metamorphosing leptocephali were collected in the mesoscale eddy region to the east of Taiwan during research expeditions in 2004. Rearing experiments showed that the total length (LT ) of leptocephali decreased by an average of 12·5% during metamorphosis and 13·9% during the 2-12 h after death. Thus, the mean back-calculated LT at the onset of metamorphosis for 630 glass eels from Taiwan and Japan was estimated at 67·8 ± 2·7 mm (mean ± S.D.). The estimated mean ante-mortem size of the fully grown pre-metamorphic leptocephali collected in 2004 was 64·6 ± 3·4 mm, which was consistent with the LT estimate for glass eels. Otolith analysis showed that the mean age at the onset of metamorphosis was 137 ± 15 days and indicated that Japanese eels may have a recruitment route through the mesoscale eddies to the east of Taiwan in addition to the direct transfer route from the North Equatorial Current to the Kuroshio Current.

Liver ischemia reperfusion injury (IRI) is an important problem in liver transplantation. Thrombomodulin (TM), an effective drug for disseminated intravascular coagulation, is also known to exhibit an anti-inflammatory effect through binding to the high-mobility group box 1 protein (HMGB-1) known as a proinflammatory mediator. We examined the effect of recombinant human TM (rTM) on a partial warm hepatic IRI model in wild-type (WT) and toll-like receptor 4 (TLR-4) KO mice focusing on the HMGB-1/TLR-4 axis. As in vitro experiments, peritoneal macrophages were stimulated with recombinant HMGB-1 protein. The rTM showed a protective effect on liver IRI. The rTM diminished the downstream signals of TLR-4 and also HMGB-1 expression in liver cells, as well as release of HMGB-1 from the liver. Interestingly, neither rTM treatment in vivo nor HMGB-1 treatment in vitro showed any effect on TLR-4 KO mice. Parallel in vitro studies have confirmed that rTM interfered with the interaction between HMGB-1 and TLR-4. Furthermore, the recombinant N-terminal lectin-like domain 1 (D1) subunit of TM (rTMD1) also ameliorated liver IRI to the same extent as whole rTM. Not only rTM but also rTMD1 might be a novel and useful medicine for liver transplantation. This is the first report clarifying that rTM ameliorates inflammation such as IRI in a TLR-4 pathway-dependent manner.

Gyrokinetic turbulence simulations are applied for the first time to the cross-scale interactions of microtearing modes (MTMs) and electron-temperature-gradient (ETG) modes. The investigation of the fluctuation response in a multiscale simulation including both types of instabilities indicates that MTMs are suppressed by ETG turbulence. A detailed analysis of nonlinear mode coupling reveals that radially localized current-sheet structures of MTMs are strongly distorted by fine-scale E×B flows of ETG turbulence. Consequently, electron heat transport caused by the magnetic flutter of MTMs is significantly reduced and ETG turbulence dominates electron heat transport.

Life scientists often desire to display the signal from two different molecular probes as a single colour image, so as to convey information about the probes' relative concentrations as well as their spatial corelationship. Traditionally, such colour images are created through a merge display, where each greyscale signal is assigned to different channels of an RGB colour image. However, human perception of colour and greyscale intensity is not equivalent. Thus, a merged image display conveys to the typical viewer only a subset of the absolute and relative intensity information present in and between two greyscale images. The Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage L*a*b* colour space (CIELAB) has been designed to specify colours according to the perceptually defined quantities of hue (perceived colour) and luminosity (perceived brightness). Here, we use the CIELAB colour space to encode two dimensions of information about two greyscale images within these two perceptual dimensions of a single colour image. We term our method a Perceptually Uniform Projection display and show using biological image examples how these displays convey more information about two greyscale signals than comparable RGB colour space-based techniques.

PURPOSE: The goal of chemotherapy for metastatic breast cancer (MBC) is to prolong survival and maintain health-related quality of life. This study aimed to evaluate long-term health status of patients with MBC who participated in the phase III randomized SELECT BC trial. METHODS: In the SELECT BC trial, patients were randomly allocated to the S-1 or taxane (paclitaxel or docetaxel) arm. Health status was assessed by EQ-5D at pre-treatment, 3 and 6 months after randomization, and every 6 months thereafter to the extent possible. Least square mean scores were assessed to compare EQ-5D index values between groups. Time to deterioration analysis was also performed by defining the minimally important difference of EQ-5D as 0.05 or 0.1. RESULTS: The number of patients for EQ-5D analysis was 175 and 208 in the taxane and S-1 arms, respectively. Least square mean EQ-5D index values up to 60 months were 0.741 (95 % CI [0.713-0.769]) in the taxane arm and 0.748 [0.722-0.775] in the S-1 arm. The EQ-5D index value during PFS up to 12 months in the S-1 was superior to the corresponding index value in the taxane (0.812 [0.789-0.834] vs. 0.772 [0.751-0.792], P = 0.009). Time to deterioration analysis also revealed that S-1 significantly delayed the deterioration of EQ-5D index value during the period before progression (P = 0.002 and 0.003). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that the EQ-5D index value was higher in patients treated with S-1 during first-line chemotherapy. Considering non-inferiority of S-1 in terms of OS, obtained quality-adjusted life years may be greater in the S-1 arm.
